A grievance letter, regarding alleged irregularities at Langer Heinrich Uranium mine, reached the namib times. In the letter the author, who asked for anonymity, indicts the mine of contracting foreigners, under the pretext of being experts, but they afterwards become full-time LHU employees. The grievance letter further indicates that the entire technical management departments and understudies at the mine are occupied by foreigners, while Namibian experts are available. This supposedly led to many Namibian experts
resigning out of pure frustration, as they were not recognised and advanced to higher ranks. The communication further alleges that very few contracts are being awarded to black-owned Namibian companies and once a black company is
awarded a contract, the working conditions are made impossible for them to last for even six months on the site. Langer Heinrich Uranium is renowned for its strict anti-corruption, bribery as well as their whistle-blower policy.
The letter however claims that complaints from employees, indicating that LHU employees continue to benefit from subcontracts, allegedly fall on deaf ears. An employee was apparently recently suspended for reporting such irregu-
larities. In conclusion the grievance letter mentions a financial agreement between the mine and a junior metallurgist, recently. The employee’s signature was allegedly forged and submitted to the Ministry, as if he was an understudy
of a foreigner, while in fact he was not. Langer Heinrich’s Managing Director, Mr Simon Solomons responded via email on the allegations. He once again gave reassurance that LHUPL treats seriously any allegation of wrong-doing or

Rough seas delay Opera cruise
Bernabé Blaauw
The latest visit of the luxury passenger liner, the MSC Opera, was delayed due to extremely stormy weather conditions in the Cape Town area, which in turn caused rough seas and high waves along the Western Cape coastline. The MSC Opera, who viPage 5 sited Walvis Bay last week as well, was supposed to dock in the Cape Town harbour on Monday. Unfortunately the huge waves made it impossible for her to enter the harbour and the passengers were only able to board the ship on Tuesday to start their cruise to Walvis Bay. She docked here yes-

terday morning but the delay will unfortunately cause the passengers to miss their scheduled visit to Lüderitz. The MSC Opera is a regular visitor to the Port of Walvis Bay and is described as classic, grand and opulent. She is operated by MSC Cruises and was built in 2004. She can carry 1 712 passengers in
878 cabins and a crew of approximately 728. She has 13 decks, including nine for passengers, is 251.25 metres long, 28.80 metres wide and 54 metres high. Her average sailing speed is 18 knots. The next passenger liner to visit Walvis Bay is the Boudicca who is expected here on Monday morning at 06:00.
A Sister’s Pain “Babab was very close to my heart…” Sharlien Tjambari “He was a sweet boy – and the sweetest brother I had.” That is how Petrina Swartbooi (40) the first born, of the family, remembers her little brother who drowned this week in Swakopmund. The lifeless body of Paul Theofilus Swartbooi (pictured), also known as Babab by his close friends and relatives, was washed ashore on Wednesday afternoon around 13:30, at the Vineta beach, just about 500 metres south of the waterfront area, known to many as the “Klip jetty”. On the day of the incident, the 14-year old went to the beach in the afternoon to swim and have fun with three
his friends from Haus Romi, also known as the Namib High Hostel. Paulus was struck by a very strong wave and
drowned. Paulus, originally from Maltahöhe, was born on 18 October 1997 and he was the youngest of ten children.

Mr Solomons also noted that the Paladin Group, of which LHU is a member company, has a whistle-blower’s policy and complaints can be lodged by addressing an email to this department. Regarding the allegations in the grievance letter, Solomons commented that no complaint was lodged through the Paladin’s Anti-Bribery and Corruption Compliance Committee, or the Mineworkers Union of Namibia, which is LHU’s recognised Bargaining Agent. Solomons also noted that no employee grievance was raised and no such

Mr Simon Solomons complaints were lodged through the LHU Affirmative Action Consultative Committee. “At this point in time, LHUPL will no longer subject themselves to nameless persons who at regular intervals submit unfounded ‘grievances’ to the press until the appropriate mechanism has been followed and concrete evidence provided,” he concluded.

Piquet packing her suitcases
Her journey at namib times started on 15 January 2014. ‘‘I got a call from Otis Finck to come in for an interview and when I walked into the office all he said was, ‘You’re hired, there’s your seat. Get to work!’ I sat down, quite overwhelmed, but very excited.” After the first month on the job, she had the hang of things. She started out with the lighter stuff and worked her way up. There were articles she enjoyed writing more than others. Her least favourite assignment bestowed upon her and her colleague, was to visit a deserted building in Kuisebmond which was being used as a public toilet. “I could smell the stench as we were approaching the building and when we got a view of the place I was ready to faint. After the terrible ordeal, we were sent home to get cleaned up, because the smell had gotten into our clothes. Not one of my best days,” Piquet said. She had first-hand learning experiences in the world of journalism.”Going out to functions, meetings, press releases, and mingling with journalists from neighbouring newspapers. The opportunity to see the Namibian Navy at their best, meeting Ministers and high-profile figures. Working in the media field does have its perks,” Piquet commented. Naturally, as in any working environment, there were stressful times but she can truthfully say that she wouldn’t change her past year for anything. “I have great appreciation for namib times, and what the team has done for me.” When we asked her regard-
ing her personality, she gave a smile and answered, “Overall, I think I’m a pretty nice person. I’m patient and caring; I’m also a good listener and a hard worker. I can be very curious too. I am bubbly and out-going. I love to have fun and be spontaneous but I also can appreciate the art of conversation and beauty of just being with interesting people. I am very easy-going, and try to avoid conflict as I am not one for fights. I do stand up for myself and others, when it is needed, and unfair treatment is involved. I like being active and outside, I love nature. I really look to live life to its fullest; I’m very passionate about making every moment count. I am ambitious and a big dreamer. I have a lot of ideas for my future. I love meeting new people and travelling, and learning all about their backgrounds because I believe everyone has a story.” Today is Piquet’s last day at namib times and we asked her about her future plans. “I had heard about former au pairs and their experiences, and I found the whole concept very interesting. I did a little research, and read up about the agency Au Pair in America, specifically. I then made contact with an au pair, Minette van Wyk, who had worked through the agency and was matched in Michigan. She gave me a lot of advice in how things were going to work, regarding my application. After a few conversations I made the decision to take part in the program, which is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. She is a true inspiration and someone I look up to, she was very supportive. ” “I started with my application soon after, working through the agency made everything much easier for me. I was required to complete an online application form which includes a childcare experience form and a host family letter. Thereafter, I had to create an online profile with a short video all about myself, photographs of myself, my friends and family and the children I cared for, a passport photo and passport copy, 3 written references (including at least 1 childcare reference), a medical form (completed by my doctor) and a criminal record check. I was interviewed by African Ambassadors, a South African agency which is responsible for screening au pairs in the southern Africa region. Thereafter, my profile was placed on the Au Pair in America website along with those of hundreds of profiles
Piquet Jacobs from all around the world. Host families are able to view your application online and request a phone or Skype interview with you when they are interested in your profile. I first received a request from a family near New York, but after communicating we realised we would not be a good match. Two weeks later, I got in touch with my current host family, after a Skype session the family asked me to match with them. We informed the office and arrangements were put in place for me to leave on 8 February. I received my visa documents from London, UK, and applied for a visa interview at the US Embassy in Windhoek. My visa was approved and soon I'm on my way.” “The agency representative, Theresa Munsu, was very helpful with all the steps of my application. She literally held my hand through everything. I would recommend them without thinking twice. I also would like to encourage other girls to really consider becoming au pairs. Life as an au pair in America gives you so much more than a passing glimpse into the USA. It’s a unique opportunity to absorb the American culture through the rewarding experience of caring for American children. Share everyday life as an equal member of one of our carefully selected American host families, after all that’s what ‘au pair’ literally means; ‘on par’ or equal! You can study alongside your childcare duties, receive weekly pocket money and travel on weekends, vacations and for a further month on comple-
tion of the program.” Piquet says, one thing to remember is that you should sincerely want to work with children. “If not, then this program isn’t for you. There is no compromise – because it’s not a 'free ticket' to the States.” Her main reason for wanting to become an au pair is the chance to be closely involved in the nurturing and growing phase of a child; the chance to help in building a strong and healthy foundation for a child, which is important. “Getting to see how a child grows up, the choices they make, and the things they accomplish, is something great. Being a part of it and having the chance to experience something so extraordinary is why I applied.” Piquet also knows all about her family she is placed with. “I have been matched with a wonderful family of three in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The state of Lousiana is in the southern part of the US, also east of Texas, and at the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. My visa is sorted and I will be boarding the plane on 8 February at the Hosea Kutako International airport.” Her first stop is in New York where she will receive 4 days of orientation and then she will travel on to her family in Baton Rouge. She is extremely excited and nostalgic at the same time. “I’ve started packing slowly, but like always, I’ll probably leave the rest to the last minute. Saying goodbye will be hard, but a new adventure is ahead of me.” So, au revoir!” was her last words to her readers, an collegues at namib times.

“No approval or completion certificate was given to the school” Sharlien Tjambari Pro-Ed Academy, a Christian private school of choice in Swakopmund building a new school in Ocean View, came under the spotlight recently when the grade zero to three children started school at the new, half-finished school. Very upset parents, who dropped off their children at the new school on Wednesday, 14 January, said they were very shocked and worried when they had to leave their children at a building which was still under construction. Our previous story caused uproar with many furious about the parents who complained incognito. Ms Aili Gebhardt, the Marketing and Communication Officer of the Swakopmund Municipality confirmed on Friday last week that the municipality building inspectors and officials visited the new school to investigate and by the time they were there, the construction had not been not completed yet. “We gave them conditions and told them to complete certain things before they start operating,” said Ms Gebhardt. According to Ms Gebhardt, no approval or completion certificate was given to the school. “Provisional and partial occupation may be afforded with strict conditions should the school commence on Monday,” Gebhardt said. When asked if she was at the school on Monday to see if the school has kept to

Baby Justice returns home Mavourlene Gaes Four - month old Justice Shilongo Haidula is back in Walvis Bay with his mother and is having an excellent recovery, after an operation he had to undergo to repair a hole in his heart late last year. He was diagnosed with Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) after his mother took him to the clinic for a regular check-up. VSD is a common heart defect that's present at birth, when a hole occurs in the wall which separates the heart's lower chambers allowing blood to pass from the left to the right side of the heart. In a previous article, the newspaper spoke to one of the medical staff who was able to confirm that the surgery was a success but, failed to say when Justice would be discharged. We have now learned that
both mother and son are back in the country and doing great. According to Martha Namhadi, they got back on Friday after they were discharged and baby Justice is doing well and recovering at home. “Justice is doing great and one can really see the difference as he is livelier and got the spark back in his eyes. The doctor said he just needs to rest and I still have to take him for a follow-up, but he is going to be just fine and the hole has been repaired,” concluded Namhadi.

the rules, Ms Gebhardt said she could not get out of the office and would have to ask the engineers to go and investigate again. The parent also said that the building was both a health and safety hazard for the children as there was a lot of dust on the concrete floor and to make matters worse; there was no electricity. Mr Christian Grobler, the principal of the academy said that there had not been enough space at the current school and they needed five to six classes - that is why they moved the grade 0 to 3 classes to the new premises. When contacted for comment, the Manager of Health Services at the Swakopmund Municipality, Mr Clive Lawrence said the environmental and health practitioners had gone to the site to investigate as soon as they heard the story and they were satisfied with the minimum requirements for occupation. “However the institution was informed that the school is not yet registered as a private educational institution and was under the wrong impression that the certificate of fitness for the registered school is also applicable
to the new premises” added Mr Lawrence. namib times visited the school once more and found out that apart from the roof that is still incomplete, there have been minor developments. The school now has a playground for the children and there is a fence around the school now. “At this stage no certificate has been issued to the applicant and it will only be issued if the health services department is satisfied that all the health requirements to the General Health Regulations are met” said Lawrence. Mr Lawrence also made it clear that no business may operate without having obtained a certificate of fitness from the local authority. According to Mr Lawrence, the Certificate of Fitness has not yet been issued. He also added that it is customary that a conditional certificate of fitness may be issued if the local authority is convinced that no public hazard exists that may affect the normal health of the occupants.

NASA to use Walvis Bay for climate change investigations Local climate scientists will work with the United States (US) space agency NASA on a five-year campaign in Namibia to investigate how air pollution, man-made fires across Africa, and warming oceans may affect the climate. Project leader, Dr Jens Redemann of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, told Nampa via email on Wednesday that a NASA aircraft, including a Wallops P-3 aircraft and an Armstrong ER-2 aircraft, will be used to conduct the investigation and will be flying out of the Walvis Bay operation's base. “We are currently planning an initial site visit to Namibian airports, universities and research stations between 23 February and 5 March 2015. We are trying to gauge the interest of local scientists and research outfits to see if our project can mutually benefit all interests,” he noted. He said two new Aerosol Robotic Network (Aeronet) ground-sites will be established in St. Helena - a tropical island of volcanic origin in the South Atlantic Ocean and Angola, respectively. The project includes airborne and ground-based observations of radiation, aerosol and cloud microphysics above and below
aerosol and clouds over the south-east Atlantic Ocean. Three campaigns with P-3 aircraft are slated for September 2016, August 2017 and October 2018, respectively. Southern Africa produces almost a third of the earth's biomass burning (BB) aerosol particles, yet the fate of these particles and their influence on regional and global climate is poorly understood. Observation of Aerosols above clouds and their interactions (Oracles) is a five-year investigation with three Intensive Observation Periods (IOP) designed to study key processes that determine the climate impacts of African BB aerosols. Particles lofted into the mid-troposphere are transported westward over the southeast Atlantic, home to one of the three permanent subtropical Stratocumulus (Sc) cloud decks in the world. Redemann emphasised that the proposed Oracles study area in the south-east Atlantic is a prime location to study aerosol-cloud interactions, because it hosts some of the largest aerosol optical depths
(AOD) on the planet. Inter-model differences in aerosol and cloud distributions, as well as their combined climatic effects in the south-eastern Atlantic are partly due to the persistence of aerosols above clouds (AAC). “The varying separation of cloud and aerosol layers to be sampled during Oracles allow for a process-oriented understanding of how variations in radioactive heating profiles impact cloud properties, which is expected to improve simulations for other remote regions experiencing long-range aerosol transport above clouds,” he added. The campaign forms part of five projects under the umbrella of the agency's Earth Venture initiative. Each project is funded at a cost of US dollars 30 million (about N$300 million) over five years. The other four selected Earth Venture investigations are: Atmospheric chemistry and air pollution; ecosystem changes in a warming ocean; greenhouse gas sources; and melting Greenland glaciers. Obtaining Fishing
Permits
Obtain a permit from the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) to catch fish or dive for crayfish and respect harvesting limitations. WHY? The marine resources are limited and currently some of them are overfished or over collected. It is necessary that everybody uses them wisely and carefully to secure the future harvesting needs by protecting the stock. Quantity/number of marine resources harvestable, minimum size limits of fish and crayfish that can be caught, open season etc. help to manage stocks to avoid the total disappearance of some species in our waters. Do not leave bait or fish on the beach! Either take it home or return it to the sea. This food attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that prey on other bio-diversity. When you are back home after the holiday, it also inflates the predator population. Where can you get a license for angling, crayfish diving & bait/mussels collection?

Pikkewyntjie is nou “Happy Feet” Liesl Losper
Volwasse pikwyne bly altyd by hul broeigebied.

Penguin facts African penguins are also known as jackass penguins, because they make a sound that is very similar to a donkey’s bray. Penguins can spend up to 75% of their lives in the water. They do all of their hunting in the water. Their prey can be found within 60 feet of the surface, so penguins have no need to swim in deep water. They catch prey in their beaks and swallow them whole as they swim. Some species only leave the water for molting and breeding. They hunt in the nutrient-rich cold-wa-
ter currents just offshore. Their size is 23-25 inches tall with 5-9 pounds. Diet: Small fishes, such as pilchard, anchovies, horse mackerel and sardines, their lifespan is 10 – 15 years. Range: Africa’s coastal waters and islands, from Namibia to South Africa. Habitat: African penguins nest in burrows and lay two eggs, which are incubated for 38 to 40 days by both males and females. They hunt in the nutrient-rich cold-water currents just

African Penguin, Spheniscus demersus, also known as Jackass Penguins, these fairly common penguins make it up to the Namibian coastline. Most Anticipated Movies for 2015 Leandrea Louw
It's a new year, meaning there's a lot of new things that we can actually look forward to and one of those things is, wait for it, drumroll, MOVIES! I've done my research and came across a few movie titles that seems to be on everyone's lips. I've ranked them in no particular order, so here goes. 1. Avengers: Age of Ultron The release date is set for 1 May this year. This action packed adventure is about Tony Stark trying to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, and this leads to things going awry and Earth's Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for a global adventure. 2. True Story (23 January 2015) This drama mystery will keep you on your toes as Jonah Hill plays Michael Finkel, a recently terminated New York Times journalist who's struggling for work after a story
gone wrong. One day, he receives a phone call from a man regarding an FBI Most Wanted individual named Christian Longo, who's been captured and claimed to be living as Finkel. Longo and Finkel meet and form a potentially marriage shattering bond while Longo is in prison awaiting his trial. Finkel exchanges journalism tips for the real events behind Longo's alleged heinous acts of murdering his family. Through the twists and turns in the movie, only at the end will Finkel uncover the True Story. 3. Insurgent (20 March 2015) In this action- adventure, thriller, Beatrice Prior must confront her inner demons and continue her fight against a powerful alliance which threatens to tear her society apart with the help from others on her side. Here, one choice can transform you-or it can destroy you, but every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior
must continue trying to save those she loves and herself - while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love. Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable hor-rors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable - and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships. 3. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (18 December 2015) This sci-fi adventure is a continuation of the saga created by George Lucas set thirty years after Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi. 5. Get Hard (27 March
2015) In this first ever collaboration of Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell, they'll have you laughing off your seat. When millionaire James King played by Ferrell is nailed for fraud and bound for San Quentin, he turns to Darnell Lewis played by Hart, to prep him to go behind bars. 6. Focus (27 February 2015) This is a romantic comedy-drama starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Nicky Spurgeon is a seasoned conman who becomes romantically involved with a young attractive woman; however, while introducing her to the tricks of his con man trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame - now an accomplished femme
fatale - shows up in Buenos Aires as the opposing side of the same scam: a bil-
strength, conman Scott lionaire international 7 (3 April 2015) race car owner. In the Deckard Shaw seeks Lang must embrace his
midst of Nicky's latest, most dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop and the consummate con man off his game. 7. Spectre (6 November 2015) In this action-adventure starring Daniel Craig, a cryptic message from Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind Spectre. 8. Fast and the Furious
revenge against Dominic Toretto and his family for the death of his brother. This will mark the final film appearance of Paul Walker, who died on November 30, 2013 with filming only halfway completed. After Walker's death, filming was delayed for script rewrites and his bro-thers Caleb and Cody Walker being used as stand-ins to complete his remaining scenes. 9. Ant-Man (17 July 2015) Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in
inner-hero and help his mentor in this action, sci-fi, Dr Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Armed with a supersuit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, conman Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr Hank Pym.

acebook Municipality: Street tarring in Narraville
Ontgroening by skole
Camel En Monica Viljoen: My oudste was gesot in Namib High en daar was niks mee fout nie. Inteendeel.
Niks gesins geweld? Niks roof, moord, verkragting of aanranding klagtes?

I want to put a straight question to the municipality. The 2014/2015 tarring plan for Narraville – what happened to it? We are nearly at the end of January 2015 – only 5 months are left of the book year! Evergreen Street has the worst surface in our township. It doesn’t even help scraping it once a month, because two to three days
later we are back at square one. We want urgent action in this regard. Distressed resident
I would like to close this short write-up with a heartfelt thank you to all participants in the show and quote from the play in it’s original language as follows: Angel of Death: A WORLD IN A GRAIN OF SAND HEAVEN IN A WILD FLOWER AND A WORLD AND HEAVEN IN MUSIC…. Says Koos: Life is pleasant, eternity is peaceful. It’s the transition that is troublesome… And to assist us in this transition: WE S!NG! From Irmela E Erlank
Carol Lynn Oberg: Yes she did live at Welwitchia Old Age home but left there at least 2 years ago and we have not seen her since then. She had Dementia then already. Frank Boye: Really, why is everyone pray-
ing? If your God is so all-knowing then why do you think that you need to pray for her? Or do you disagree with your God’s plan? Amanda Natasha Rodkin: Don’t judge Frank to harshly maybe he prayed for something an God did not answer him in the way he wanted and now he is angry at God, but Frank God say he will answer your in his time not yours you just have to keep the faith an believe in him. Frank Boye: Amanda, The reason I wrote the comment is that everyone writes about pray-
Padkos vir oordenking ing. I myself am an atheist, and there are many atheists out there. And I find it disrespectful to other people’s religious status to flood the comment boxes with christian rants. If people really believe in their god, then prayer is just a way of showing how you disagree with what your god’s plan is... Or do you really believe that all your prayers may just change your god’s mind? Wilhelmus Kempen Claassens: Shame.

“My hond dink al hy word bedreig.
Indien ‘n eienaar

Plots for sale - Text message leads to investigation Madelaine Laubscher A text message was recently sent to a well-known estate agency in Walvis Bay, stating that another estate agency, which is allegedly not registered at the Namibia Estate Agency Board (NEAB), is selling two plots in Walvis Bay.
The owner of the Walvis Bay estate agency became suspicious when she saw the text message, alleging that it could be a scam, and informed the namib times. The message reads, “(name withheld) properties is selling two plots in Walvis Bay Lagoon - Price N$65,000. Make your Deposits today at bank. We will send you our bank details shortly! NB! Don’t call this time 08:00 - 16:00 because we are in the meeting in Kalahari Sand Hotel, just Sms for more Info. 081*****.” After some investigation a reporter contacted the number given in the message and a man answered. When
he was asked why there was no trace of such an estate agency online, he claimed that the name of the agency must have been typed wrong in the text message. He then gave a totally different agency name. He was subsequently asked if he can take the reporter to the plots that are for sale, for viewing. “I cannot take you to these plots because I am working,” he replied. The newspaper told him that since he is advertising the plots as an estate agency, surely someone must be available to take any potential buyer to the plots for viewing and to speak to the owner. At that stage the man
hung up. The owner of the agency who received this text message told the newspaper that after she requested more information from the seller, she realised that these plots allegedly do not exist in the said area. A spokesperson at this agency said that the whole scenario is very suspicious. “Firstly if a person shows interest in buying a plot, a con-
tract must be set up before any deposits are to be paid. The deposits are then paid into a trust account involving a lawyer. Only after the lawyer's approval, the transaction is sent to the receiver of revenue. If all is in order it is then sent to a deeds office for lodgement and registration. Registration can take up to eight working days.
The text message from the seller to the local estate agency.
Only if the registration is complete, the lawyer transfers the deposit to the seller. However in this specific case, the seller asked for a deposit to be paid in directly. The plot number given in the text message is 1547 in the Walvis Bay Lagoon area, but that number does not exist on the map. Also, no plot is easily available for less than N$700
000. We have handed the case to the Namibia Estate Agency Board (NEAB) for investigation,” she said. A spokesperson at NEAB confirmed to the newspaper that this supposed agency is not registered with them as an estate agency. If anyone has any information regarding such a text message, please contact the namib times.

Drive Against Malaria in Namibia
11 11
Letter from the North David Robertson has been spearheading the Drive Aginst Malaria for decades, and since 1999, Julia Samuël has been helping him – as promised, Julia has written us from the north of Namibia, to share the latest on their local campaign. Malaria in Namibia is once again a forgotten disease. Drive Against Malaria (DAM) helps to bring back attention about Malaria in Namibia with necessary attention in the namib times and in the 8 o’clock NBC News. During our stay in the first weeks a young women approached us. She had read the article in the namib times. She stopped us on the street: ‘’ I have read about you. I am from the north. My father died suddenly. Nobody knew what is was. Nobody could help him. In a few days he died. It was a dreadful and a shocking time for my family. After his death we found out, it was Malaria.
But then is was too late. Thank you for your work in my country. Thank you and good luck!’’ She smiled and walked away. We looked at her until she was completely out of sight. Her words struck us. It reminded us of the shocking stories we had heard from central Africa before we started the projects in 2009. A woman had told us, her family was dying in the forest from Malaria. We took these stories serious and went to the heart of the tropical rainforest in central Africa. Shortly after, Drive Against Malaria is doing whatever it takes to reach the most vulnerable people. We now cure children suf-

fering from Malaria and we are saving thousands of lives. We’re constantly monitoring the situation of children in remote areas and act rapidly when an emergency strikes. Our mission is to support remote communities where every child can grow up healthy, protected from Malaria. Every day we’re working to make this mission a reality. No matter who they are or where they are born, we reach out to the most vulnerable people whenever and wherever they need us. Now we do not turn a blind eye to the tens of thousands of young children of the south Angolan and north Namibian communities who suffer every day from Malaria. Even though recent reports show that malaria mortality rates have decreased in the centre and the south of Namibia, the health sector may not be complacent. The communities in the far north are still hit hard by Malaria. Most Malaria-endemic areas in the north are still far from achieving universal coverage with life-saving malaria interventions, knowledge and classified health staff. Many bottlenecks threaten to slow down the attention and the spread – further south - of this complicated
enemy. An appointment with the WHO representative Prof. Monir Islam was arranged for us by the British High Commissioner Marianne Young, in the UN building in Windhoek. According to WHO Namibia, Malaria is spreading further south from the border of Angola. The fear is severe complications due to a lack of resistance within the population. The presence of Drive Against Malaria helps put the deadly disease back on the political agenda, before the situation in the rest of the country is getting out of control. We’ve been driving over dusty roads and once stopped at a nearby gasoline station. Immediately a man approached us ‘’I know you! I saw you on the NBC News on television!’’ He smiled and told everybody at the station, ‘’These people drive all around Africa to fight Malaria’’. Within a few moments we were surrounded by many people. ‘’Malaria cannot reach us. Those mosquitos only live in the north.’’ We explained to him Malaria is a human disease. When an infected person traveling from the north, who carries the malaria parasite, travels to the

Malaria remains a public health problem in Namibia. The Minister of Public Health spoke about increases by tenfold. Namibia has reported significant increases in Malaria
in northern Namibia and it has now also spread in more southern regions even in Omaheke and Otjozondjupa. Greetings from David and Julia

The purpose of the show was to raise funds and create awareness of autism in Swakopmund. Kim’s Dance & Fitness offers dance and fitness training for all ages, focusing on high level dance performance and health education. Every year Kim Garny organises a yearend function for her dance and fitness students. Kim wanted the show in 2014 to be more
than just another ordinary entertainment show. She approached Mirana and Ludwig Haller of “Autism and Aspergers Namibia” in Swakopmund, suggesting to them the idea of raising awareness and funds for their project. Together with Almarie Mostert, pre-

During the evening, Kim’s Dance & Fitness students and invited guest artists, such as Sammy & Friends and Verena
Meyer’s team created a festive mood with dancing, singing and acting. Following the program of music, dance and acts was an auction and a silent bid. A ginger-bread house, produced and sponsored by the Little Bakers Club, was
auctioned three times in a row, as successive bid-winners redonated the item to be auctioned again. Another surprise was the silent bid on the preceding performing acts. The act with the highest collective bid would present an en-
core. The audience voted for the dance entitled “Santa Baby”, performed by Chanel Vermeulen, Lin-Mari Coetzee and Nakita Milne, whose repeat performance delighted the audience. A total amount of nineteen thousand
Namibian Dollar was raised during the jovial evening. The organisers and beneficiaries are elated by the generosity and support of the audience. For more information about Autism & Aspergers contact:

Passionate Entrepreneur and Model dreams Big Sharlien Tjambari
Elizabeth Kambweshe, a 19 year old young lady who is passionate about modelling and helping people, has always dreamt of opening a modelling academy in Swakopmund – and she’s adamant that challenges facing her won’t keep her from accomplishing her dreams. Elizabeth says “I am ambitious, optimistic and fanatic and my aspiration in life is to become a supermodel, business woman and youth ambassador.” She also says her vision in life is to make a difference and to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for all. According to Elizabeth, she has started operating her academy from home and has a total of nine promising models that she trains from home.
She is seeking help from anyone who is willing to help her accomplish her dreams. She says she is in need of a building anywhere in Swakopmund where she can operate her academy from and also some cameras for her photo shoots. The purpose of the modelling school is to boost confidence, and identify talent to create a platform where young girls express themselves. Elizabeth says many girls out there dream
of becoming models but they lack the confidence and this is the type of girl she wants to focus on. “I want to change the way they perceive themselves in order for them to believe in their capabilities. The academy will focus on educating the girls about modelling, encouraging them to be ambitious and content, inspire them to become future leaders and more. The academy will also focus on providing for the community in any way possible. The main objective of the academy is to help boost confidence and to see these girls living the life they dream of having, as well as helping them progress into lucrative modelling agencies. The academy will provide fun days with models, photo shoots and fashion shows. Elizabeth says she is positive she will find the right venue that the academy can use for training.

Here Rodelio walked away with a one year scholarship from the New York Film Academy. Rodelio had an exceptional year last year. He took the theater stage by storm where he acted in a number of plays namely, Lammie Beukes, Prime Colors and Illusions of Grandeur. He was also featured in an MTC advert, and was actively involved in a Colgate and Bank Windhoek campaign. After having been on the theater scene for just a few months, Rodelio was nominated for Best Male Actor and Best Newcomer in the Namibia Theater and Film Awards. Here he scooped the Best New-
comer Award. “It was really an intense year for me”, he said. The year that is and will be He gave us a slight overview of what’s ahead for him this year. It’s under speculation that there will be re-runs of Lammie Beukes, Prime Colors and Illusions of Grandeur. “I also feel ready to branch out in film, but I’m still going to do theater. I want to try and get my own hosting gig and definitely do more Master of Ceremonies Gigs. I also want to get back into commer-

cial modelling again”, he gushed excitedly. There is also rumours that Rodelio will get his own one-man show at the National Theater of Namibia, later in the year. For the young actors, singers, dancers he gave this advice: “This is a year of change. As change goes, you have to let go of everything and take that bold step to pursue your dream. Just go for it. Shake off the haters and just go for it. It’s a tough industry, a tough world out there but perseverance and hard work will get you there. One thing I’ve learned so far is count your blessings. Everything is from above and everything you are going to fall back on is family, friends and God. That is your foundation. Colleague and close friend, Lizé Elhers, in one of her songs, the album entitled Change, she says that - no matter what happens, just show up, you don’t have to be the best, just be there.”

Samox - musical ambition par excellence Mavourlene Gaes
Samora Jonathan Geingob already has a very successful career as a marine technician but refuses to give up or let go of making music, which is his greatest love. Samox, like a normal and very ambitious young man attended school and after completing High school in 2007 at Westside High in Swakopmund, he studied Information Technology (IT). He says although he has his certificate in IT, he has struggled to get a job in the industry. In 2013 he applied as an
earth moving equipment mechanic apprentice at a local company. After he got accepted, Samox went on to study to be a diesel mechanic in South Africa for three years. “I am a marine technician at the moment, but even though music is not my profession, it is something I love to do when I am at home,” he
explains. Ma /gaisa, kwaito, Afro pop and dancehall is what this man of many talents specialises in. Having started singing in 2008 as a way of entertaining himself, Samox later decided to join Rainbow music productions but admits that, although he would have loved to sing in that production, he mostly did graphic and technical work. “While I was with them, I joined Minotour music production the following year. I started recording with them and making music videos” Samox said. During his time at Mintour productions, he shot his first music video titled
“Saka” with the help of Smiley as he is popularly known. Samox handed the video over to NBC and One Africa and added the response he received from the public was a huge motivating factor which contributed to his decision to keep singing. In 2009, Samox worked on a collaboration album “Rainbow Collabo” with various artists from Rainbow music production. Following the completion of the album, he also featured on a song “Jiva” with Stella after she approached him. Being of an independent nature he decided to start his own recording studio “Axamovement Records and Entertainment” and became his
own producer. During that same time after opening his studio, he recorded a single and video of the track titled “Axasman” in which he featured Permithias (Big Brother Africa Hotshots contestant). According to Samox the single was a way of determining which music genre he fell under. Although it took him almost seven years, he finished his first album “Axamovement” named after his studio in November last year and launched it on Damara/Nama radio. Although Samox is still collecting funds to have a CD launch, the album is available in Swakopmund, Walvis Bay and Otjiwarongo.

Daimler Trucks sells nearly 500 000 trucks in 2014
Daimler Trucks sold almost 500 000 trucks in 2014. Despite partly difficult market conditions, the world's leading manufacturer of commercial vehicles succeeded in increasing deliveries to 445 300 units in the first eleven months of 2014, an increase by three percent over the same period last year.
Based on first December figures, Daimler Trucks finished 2014 with a considerably positive sales growth reaching nearly 500 000 units. Final worldwide sales figures will be published at Daimler's annual press conference. In 2013, Daimler Trucks sold about 484 200 vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz, FUSO, Freightliner, Western Star, Thomas Built Buses and BharatBenz brands. "Our intense efforts in all regions are paying dividends. Despite many economic challenges in some key markets, we can look back on 12 successful months. With almost 500,000 trucks sold we are already coming very close to our target envisaged for 2015," said Dr Wolfgang Bernhard, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Daimler Trucks & Buses. For commercial vehicles, 2014 was dominated by developments that varied widely from one region to the next. Weak economic prospects and political uncertainties put a strain on the market development in Latin America. In Europe, sales were impacted by the lack of dynamic economic development in addition to the introduction of the new Euro VI emissions standards and the difficult political situation in Eastern Europe. The situation is very different in North America and Japan: In these markets Daimler benefited from the strong overall local business environment for commercial vehicles. "We scored points with our strong products. With a strong sales team and vehicles perfectly tailored to the particular customer needs, we managed to increase our market positions in many key regions," said Bernhard. One major reason for the high market acceptance for trucks from Daimler is the extremely competitive total cost of ownership (TCO) of the vehicles, which is the most important argument for buyers of trucks as a capital good. Enhanced efficiency for the good of the customer is paramount in all regions, for all brands and for all vehicle models. About the prospects for the coming year Bernhard said: "With our global presence, our technological leadership and our intelligent platform strategy we are well prepared to react swiftly and appropriately to unpredictabilities in the economic environment. That is why we at Daimler Trucks will continue to work steadily on further expanding our position as the world's leading truck manufacturer in 2015." Highlight of the year: Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 The highlight of 2014 at Daimler Trucks was the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025. The autonomously driving truck was presented at the 65th International Motor Show for Commercial Vehicles in Hanover in September. The Future Truck 2025 protects resources, reduces all types of emissions, guarantees maximum traffic safety and increases connectivity in road traffic. Radar sensors and camera technology make it possible for the Future Truck 2025 to drive autonomously, independent from other vehicles or control cen-tres. Mercedes-Benz combines this technology within the highly intelligent "Highway Pilot" system, a system similar to an autopilot in an aircraft. "The Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 epitomizes efficiency, safety and connectivity like no other truck. Consequently, it provides relevant answers to the future challenges in road freight transport. That is why I am convinced that this technology will open up new business prospects for Daimler Trucks in the future," said Bernhard.

Dakar Rally- a personal account Leandrea Louw
With the Dakar Rally, which came to an end last week Saturday on a very high note, with Hannes Saaijman, the first South African competitor at the 2015 Dakar Rally to claim a stage victory. He did so by winning the final stage to win the race in Argentina and his first Dakar Rally in 9th place in the quad category. He also won the “First Timers” Class. It was the first time that “Team Rhide SA” took part in the Dakar Rally. Two of our very own, Frank Stein and Philipie Baard from Walvis Bay, were also part of the technical team of Team Rhide SA, and they briefly shared with us how the experience was of conquering over 9 000 km’s of the dry deserts of South America. Philipie tell us that he and Hannes Saaijman as well Brain Baragwanath had been friends for years. They approached him and asked if he wanted to be part of their technical team since he also owns his own bike shop. Afterwards he approached Frank Stein on whether or not he was in.
“This was quite a few months back,” said Frank, “as we needed the time to apply for visas, and for some of the visa, like a visa to enter Argentina, we had to go all the way to Johannesburg.” Frank’s role in the technical team was that of part of the service team of the bikes, a driver and a general liaison between the drivers and the team. Philipie was the Chief Mechanic of the technical team. Frank described the whole experience as simply unbelievable. “There isn’t any other way I would like to describe it other than unbelievable. The whole operation of how the Rally works, the places, it was simply amazing.
Left to Right- Frank Stein, Brian Braragwanath, Clive Baragwanath and Philipie Baard The landscape view was immensely beautiful, a sight many people don’t get to see every day. For the past two weeks, our entire focus had to be on the team and as a team we had to make sure the guys who participated completed their different stages and had good times upon completion. It was a whole other world the past two
weeks. “ Philipie described the experience as something completely different. “It was indescribable. We did not have much of a routine as we usually had about two hours sleep a day, but one thing I know for sure is, I’ll definitely do it all over again.”
