Community mourns Only we can make Paul van der Merwe Covid-19 in 2021

the difference.....

Walvis Bay mourns the passing of Mr Paul van der Merwe, one of the country’s leading diving services operators and ship salvage expert. The late Mr van der Merwe has been battling ill health for several years, and passed away in his sleep at his residence in 5th Street on Tuesday afternoon.

The rascal of the calendar, also known as Year 2020, is in its final days. Tens of thousands of people at the coast are ready to settle into the festive mood. Quality time with family and friends. Time to spend lazy hours along the beach, at camping spots or just relax at home. To each and everyone of you: your holiday break is well-deserved. 2020 was not an easy year for most people, as the Covid-19 pandemic tightened its grip on our people’s lives, families, our health and on society including the economy. The good news though is we can determine how 2020 ends. We had no power over how the year started. We had no power to change its course. However, by sticking to certain fundamental behaviour now, we can overcome the crisis and look forward to normalising our situation in 2021. From the Directors of the Namib Times, management and staff, it is our sincere wish for all our readers and advertisers to take a well-deserved rest. As responsible citizens, we need to take each other’s safety and well being into consideration when we go about our holiday activities. That include safety on our roads, safety along the beaches, and to refrain from behaviours that endanger our health or lives, our environment and that of others. There rests an unprecedented responsibility on each of us to take extra caution to curb the spread of the Coronavirus as we enjoy our holidays. Wearing face masks in public is crucial. Regularly sanitising of hands, social distancing and avoiding crowded places are crucial if we want to end 2020 well by curbing the second wave. Stay safe and keep well. The Namib Times will publish its first edition of the new year on 8 January 2021. Our offices, both in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, open for business on Wednesday 6 January.

Covid-19: Situation remains critical

Two more in the dock for Fishrot scandal

Two accused have been added to the current line-up of Fishrot accused. Otneel Shuudifonya and Phillipus Mwapopi arrived at the offices of the Anti-Corruption Commission in Windhoek on Tuesday, accompanied by their lawyer Milton Engelbrecht. Warrants of arrest have been issued several days ago. Shuudifonya works for the Otjozondjupa Regional Council and Mwapopi is employed by the Windhoek City Police. After a brief appearance in the Windhoek magistrates court, the two accused were remanded in custody pending their next pre-trial appearance in a Windhoek court on 22 April 2021.

Alert:

Erongo remains second Health Minister briefs nation at 15:00 worst hit Region Namibia reported 330 new Covid-19 confirmed cases in a 24-hour period between Monday and Tuesday. Despite recording only 20 new cases from this total figures, Erongo Region is the second worst hit region with 326 cases the past week alone. Inhabitants and visitors in Erongo are cautioned that Covid-19 infection is

real. Safety protocols need to be adhered to at all times, in order to prevent the situation worsening. Of the 20 new cases for Erongo, 7 were reported in Omaruru, 7 at Usakos, 4 at Walvis Bay and 2 at Swakopmund. The public is urged to

wear facemasks properly when entering public places. The regular sanitising of hands are crucial to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus and people are urged to always observe social distancing and not risk being exposed to crowded places.

Namibia’s health minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula will address the nation at 15:00 today from State House in Windhoek on the latest situation with the country’s Covid-19 response measures. The briefing will be broadcast live on NBC 1. Business owners, in particular restaurants and other places where people socialise are urged to maintain Covid-19 safety measures. That includes adhering to closing times as well as the maximum number of people

allowed in venues, both indoor and outdoor. Following the latest figures, Namibia at the time of going to press yesterday stood at a total of 19 629 cases, of which a total of 16 317 people has recovered.

That represents a recovery rate of 83 % The recovery rate for the country stood at 97 % just over a week ago, indicating a worsening situation if Namibians and visitors alike don't pay heed to Covid-19 safety measures.

Left at the mercy of public health services The suffering of many Namibians, because of poor public health service delivery, often goes unnoticed. People already destitute by unemployment, and other inequalities are often left at the mercy of State health officials, as they cannot afford private medical care. It is not only the patient who suffers distress, but it also leaves loved ones in a state of helplessness and distress. Here is the story of a 61-year-old female who suffers from Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). A person suffering from this condition is heavily reliant on a medical oxygen supply. Maria spent the past four months in a Windhoek state hospital facility where she was treated for DVT. On 8 December a decision was made she has to be transferred back to Walvis Bay and hospitalised in the Walvis Bay state hospital. Initially the trip by state ambulance started off well, until a truck ran the ambulance off the road somewhere between Okahandja and Karibib. The woman's relief of having survived the accident in the back of an ambulance was short lived. Soon the ambulance's oxygen supply equipment failed and she was left fighting for every breath. She was rushed to the Karibib state hospital. Upon her arrival she already started to turn blue as the oxygen drained from her body, and no means to restore her oxygen levels without oxygen equipment. Distressed relatives said this week they cannot quite believe that the ambulance was unprepared. Specifically given the fact the lady suffered from DVT and oxygen supplies need to be readily available. They rejected a state doctor's explanation that the ambulance driver did not know the person to be transferred was oxygen reliant. “All ambulances carry oxygen. It is not a matter of preparing an ambulance for that”, relatives told the newspaper. Attributing the incident as carelessness from

the side of the state medical personnel in Windhoek. At the Walvis Bay state hospital, the family were even more surprised when a matron suggested the lady rather be discharged from hospital and allowed to go home. The nurse cited Covid-19 risk as one of the reasons for the person to be discharged. “We were flabbergasted. Our mother needs oxygen to be able to survive. We don't have any oxygen supply equipment at home. Furthermore, the state hospital needs to ensure Covid-19 protocols are in place to accommodate not only Covid-patients but also the general public who suffer from other disease and injuries”, explained the lady's daughter. Adding, the family were simply told by the nurse they should go out in the community and see for a sponsor to install an oxygen supply at home, as the hospital would not be supplying that anymore. “What authority does the Matron have discharging an oxygen dependent patient? Isn't my mom better off and safer in hospital under care than outside? How will she get sicker in hospital because of Covid-19? Isn't there a Covid-19 isolated facility away from hospital? Is my mom using up all the oxygen that they rather use for covid-19 and where will she get sponsorships in these trying times of the economy conditions”, were the questions of another family member? Adding, under these trying times they don't even know where the next meal would come from. Leave alone having to find someone generous enough to sponsor oxygen for their mom on a regular basis. “It feels like her life doesn't matter.”

Staff threatens to “occupy” Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre Staff allegedly not paid salaries for the past eight months. Workers argue hotel should become home now The Namibian Food and Allied Workers Union (NAFAU) together with the employees of the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre is threatening to occupy the Hotel by the end of this week, should management of the hotel fail to meet the employees and find a solution to the non-payment of salaries. The employees are also expecting their back-pay for the last 8 months, which they have not been paid. Johannes Shayuka, the Erongo Regional Coordinator for NAFAU during a press briefing on 18 December said: “We are giving the company four days to assist the workers in any kind, otherwise we will be left with no other choice but to let the workers occupy the hotel as they have no place to stay”. Currently, the company allegedly accommodate one employee and his family, who are eating free while the remaining 169 employees are suffering. NAFAU is very dissatisfied with the way the hotel's management is treating employees. The last salaries employees received was in April this year. According to Shayuka, the union registered a case at the Ministry of Labour in June this year. The case is pending. Shayuka said employees are suffering. Workers are uncertain of their futures with the Hotel. Most have no secure additional source of income and no roofs over their heads. NAFAU reportedly at various occasions wrote letters to the hotel management, pleading with them to assist the employees in any way possible. The pleas fell on deaf ears. The spokesperson for the staff, Stanley Tsai-Tsaib, said the fight between TransNamib and the Hotel should not affect the employees, because employees work for the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre and not for the shareholder which is TransNamib. Tsai-Tsaib further said the General Manager, who lives in Swakopmund, refuses to meet with the employees and that is a clear sign that there is no interest from her towards the staff. “This type of situation requires people to meet face-to-face and should not be communicated through text messages or WhatsApp like they are doing at the moment. There are many letters we received during the past months, letters without the company's stamp or letter head”, explained Tsai-Tsaib.

Samaritans change the plight of the poor house-by-house, meal-by-meal The day a taxi pulled up at the shack of Magrietha Salon in Swakopmund's DRC settlement, little did she know that a positive change was about to come for her, her twelve children and three grandchildren. Salon's shack was an oven during hot sunny days. At night shivering cold. The fog and occasional rain left their little belongings damp. The only source of income is for the children to go out by day to beg for food and money at nearby shops. It was during one of those days the children were begging at Woermann Brock in Vineta that their paths crossed with Swakopmund resident Johan Kruger. Kruger is friends with a group of people calling themselves Jesus Christ Glory. The group constantly explores for opportunities to help other people. Kruger purchased food for the children and also provided money for them to return home by taxi. “A few days later the same taxi pulled up at our home”, recalls Salon (46). Kruger emerged from the taxi and he stopped by to inquire about the conditions they were living under. He was appalled by what he saw”, according to Salon. Very soon afterwards people arrived at Salon's shack and the transformation process started. It was Kruger with people of Jesus Christ Glory. Very soon the shack was replaced by a four-room cement-fibre panel house. Kruger organised the work party and the German charity organisation Pallium provided material assistance. Apart from the house, the family also got much needed necessities like matrasses and blankets. Salon's story is testimony that no matter how dire any situation is. If people come together change can happen. Change does not necessarily have to be measured in the number of lives you touch at a time, or how big the change is you want to bring about. Salon too over the years have tried to feed other children in her community, despite the fact that she and her children and grandchildren not always had enough to eat. She was the blessing in those children's lives and now blessings were upon her. Kruger explained he in the meantime started a project by the name of “Restoring Dignity”. That was about two months ago. With the assistance of a few fellow-Christians, they provide the less fortunate with food vouchers. The project also works with the homeless. According to Kruger, the vouchers also help buying cleaning materials, sanitary- and other personal care items. “My aim is to focus and help as many needy people as possible. We have to counter the food shortage problem”.

Councillors treat elderly for Christmas Rudi Bowe

The Arandis town councillors surprised about 250 elderly residents at the town with food hampers for Christmas last Wednesday. The town's mayor Erastus Kandenge thanked the community for actively contributing to the mayoral fund from which the parcels were funded. Kandenge said "We really appreciate the longevity, hard work and sacrifices that elders contributed for the betterment of our town and society. We thus commit to bring joy to them at times like the festive season, as it is the best time to share gifts and laughter and hopes for the new year." The parcels that include instant porridge, stew, rice, veggies, fruit, cooking oil, soup packs, sugar, meat stew and spices were delivered door to door due to the Covid-19 situation. The overwhelmed elderly thanked the councillors saying they feel appreciated.

It broke our hearts to lose you, but you never went alone, for part of us went with you the day God took you home. Jan-Jan, Zou & Kids In loving memory of Jaja Cloete Your presence we miss Your loving memory we treasure Loving you always forgetting you never. Rest in eternal peace. From Pretorius families

We had a wonderful aunt, one who never really grew old; her smile was made of sunshine, and her heart was solid gold. From John, Ula, Marisha and Kids

I thought of you today but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday and days before that too. I think of silence, I often speak your name all I have are memories and a picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake from which we will never part. God has you in His arms, I have you in my Heart

In Loving Memory of a Dear Sister My dearest darling sister How can i find the words to say to tell of how I miss you throughout every single day? I miss our little chats - the way way you’d listen to me moan and how you’d always cheer me up Whenever you would phone. Living life without you is so very hard to bear And i’d give all I have to waken and to see you standing there.

With love from your eldest, Joshua and Jeremiah

Your loving brothers and sisters Monica, Piet, Verna & Lennie

Your wings were ready but our hearts were not We will miss you forever We love you Mervi, Requelme and Alexis

Mom your life was a blessing Your memory a treasure You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. Rest in peace dearest mother

In Loving memory of my Mother Of all the special gifts in life however great or small To have you as my mom was the greatest gift of all. A special time A special face A special mother I can’t replace. With aching heart I whisper low I miss you mom and I love you so

You are the best friend I have in life, the only true companion who can sacrifice everything just for me to be happy. I love you mom and will like to thank you for all your advice that shaped my life. I miss you, I love you

Your son Melvin

Your daughter Jam

Love Pikke and Jeremiah

Ouma Jaja I will always love you My only regret is that if I had known that the last time I saw you, would be the last time I saw you, I would’ve hugged you a little tighter, told you I loved you a little louder, and stayed by your side a little longer. My mind knows that your are gone, but my heart will never accept it I miss you so much

Those memories of you will always bring a smile, if only we could have you back for just a little while, then we could sit and talk again like we used to. Jaja always meant so much and always will too. The facet that Jaja’s no longer here will always cause us pain, but Jaja is forever in our hearts.

Love always Lessie

A determined Nasilowski complete his mission Rudi Bowe

Gideon Nasilowski (35), lives with the congenital condition, Arthrogryposis. Congenital joint contracture, especially in two or more areas of the body are characteristics of the condition. Arthrogryposis means curving of the joints in Greek. Nasilowski participated with about 1 000 cyclists in the iconic 24 hour mountain bike challenge. The challenge spans over gruelling six stage of 373 km through the world's oldest desert. A determined Nasilowski and his teammates completed the mission and moved physical and psychological boundaries for disabled and also raised money for disabled athletes. The disabled Nasilowski, on his green-green tricycle "amphi-mobile" and his teammates, Cricketer Dickson Vambe, Robert Groenewald and Dave Hammond made it before the cut off time of 15 hours for teams of four at the Nedbank

Desert Dash. The Desert Dash is known as the world's, longest singlestage mountain bike race. The starting point is at Windhoek's Grove Mall and the race ends at Platz Am Meer in Swakopmund. Nasilowski said that it was not all the way smooth cycling. They had a few breakdowns along the way. One of the problems occurred on a bad hill when the battery died with his team mates a little bit behind. Nasilowski didn't want to lose time,

got off the trike to change the battery. “I enjoyed the spectators along the road having a good time cheering us on enjoying cold beer and “braai vleis”. There were times that I wanted to join them, but we were determined to complete our mission to, change perceptions of people with disabilities and let God's light shine through us.” Nasilowski said. Nasilowski said when they started to overtake fellow cyclist and the most amazing thing happened, every cyclist was shouting words of encouragement “Go Gideon Go” “well done Gideon” it boosted his spirit and gave him a sense of belonging and it made him feel part of something amazing. Nasilowski said “To me I owe my teammates and backup team everything because they stood with me. Crossing the finish line and seeing the crowd erupt into cheers will always be one of my most memorable moments. I just wished I had more energy because as happy as I was so tired I was, I ran on fumes and I just wan-ted to get to a shower first and then into bed.” “Today I feel so blessed hoping that we could have just inspired one person with a disability if we did this project successfully and if we could have only showed one person how big God's name is then we have won”Nasilowski said. Nasilowski and his team received a hero's welcome at the finishing line for his courageous effort. Nasilowski thank Nedbank Namibia for their support Mannie's Bike Mecca who turned my 'amphimobile' into a legal

ground road eater. Konny Looser won for a sixth consecutive time, crossing the finish line early Saturday morning in a time of 14:45:21 with Namibia's Martin Freyer (15:05:48) second, and Dusty Day of South Africa third (16:34:28). Irene Steyn (17:52:35) won the women's race, followed by South African Genevieve Weber (18:15:4) and Wilmien Chamberlain (19:12:49) in that order. The 19 year old Julian Nel from Swakopmund was the youngest rider in a field of 207 entrants in the men's solo division. He finished in seventh place in a time of 16h57m44s. He was one of the youngest riders to finish in the top 10 in this main edition since the race was introduced 21 years ago. The rest of the results are as follows: Mixed two- team: 1.
