21 Gun Salute Continued from page 1 This part of the celebrations is referred to as the 21gun salute, a ceremonial military honour performed when 21 artillery shots are fired. This is an annual tradition at Heroes Day, to commemorate the fallen of the Namibian War of Independence which began on 26 August 1966 at Omugulugwombashe and the struggle against colonialism before that. It is the first time Walvis Bay hosts Heroes Day Commemoration; and one of the rarest, if not first ever 21 gun salute to be fired in post-1994 Walvis Bay.

Ohamakari Continued from page 1 Kaapehi said the German community in Namibia should know that “we the Ovaherero people are not asking anything from them, we are just asking for the reparation from the German government because the order that all Ova-herero people should be killed came from the German government” adds Kaapehi. Kaapehi also said that the German community in Namibia should respect the Ovaherero people and whatever they want to do according to their culture. Karibib serious about poverty erradication The Erongo regional leadership is dedicated to eradicating poverty and to the full implementation of the Harambee Prosperity Plan, governor Cleophas Mutjavikua has said. He asked religious, community and traditional leaders in the region to identify and report people who do not have food in their respective communities so they can be assisted. “If you see those who do not put cooking pots on the fire, please inform us. Together we can eradicate poverty,” he said at the handing over of animal feed to communal farmers by a local businessman at Karibib on Friday. Mutjavikua called on the region to come together and fight drought and poverty from all sides. “Our drought is the worst, farmers lost animals so please look at us with special eyes and help us help them save their animals. We do not want them to start from scratch because their stock perished,” he said. He said the target is to assist farmers with 50 and less cattle, but those with more cattle are also assisted with relocation to other regions such as Otjozondjupa for grazing. Mutjavikua said he has been speaking to the leadership of Otjozondjupa to secure grazing space for some of the Erongo farmers. He also advised those able to do so to relocate to where there is grazing. “The situation is so serious

that farmers are forced to sell their animals at a loss or helplessly watch them die,” he said. Mutjavikua said he is most concerned about elderly farmers who depend entirely on their livestock for a living. “To the business community please embrace the Harambee Prosperity Plan. Help with finance to rescue our people so that they do not end up begging for food and money in the street,” he said. Another message to the farmers especially in the Tubusis and Usakos areas is to brand their animals with Government provided numbers, as animals without ear tags will not be given donated fodder. He asked the veterinarians to sensitise and assist communal farmers in the branding. “Some farmers are saying we know them thus there is no need for requirements like ear tagging. Please let us not be ignorant, do the right thing to save your livestock,” said the Erongo Governor. (NAMPA)

Killer Thomas Florin can be paroled in 90-days Floris Steenkamp Thomas Adolf Florin, the former Swakopmund butcher that killed his wife in the town's then BrĂźcken Street in June 1998, could be released from the Windhoek Central Prison within three months. This is after a successful bid in the Supreme Court for eligibility for parole. Florin, now in the latter half of his forties, was found guilty on 3 December 1999 of the murder of his wife, Monika Florin, in the couple's home. Florin never admitted to the killing, but was convicted on 22 December of the same year on evidence presented by the State. Monika Florin was killed by a single blow to the head by a blunt object [a hammer] whereafter Thomas Florin first mutilated her mortal remains and cooked it before hiding some of the grisly evidence in containers in the house's ceiling. Florin was found guilty of murder, mutilation of a dead human body and obstructing the course of justice. He was sentenced to serve a minimum of fifteen years and was transferred to the Windhoek Central Prison to serve the sentence. This sentence includes a six month sentence for wildlife products which was found to be illegally in his possession when the Florin couple's freight containers, in which their household was packed for an imminent move to Germany, was opened by the police in Walvis Bay. The police had a suspicion that Thomas Florin's explanation that his wife absconded, was not true and arrested him for the illegal possession of the wildlife products found in the containers. Florin was still in custody when his wife's remains were discovered. Florin made a first [unsuccessful] bid for release in 2012. He re-launched the action recently in the Supreme Court, along with several other prison inmates serving life sentences whom too want to become eligible for parole. The bid was successful, which would now allow Florin's release to be considered by Namibia's National Release Board within 90 days.

Two caught red-handed during break-in attempt Erwin Leuschner Thanks to the quick response of the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch (SNW) two people were arrested in the early morning hours on Friday (19 August) after they were caught trying to break into the Welwitschia Park Phase 2 Governments Housing Units. More break-ins were recorded over the weekend elsewhere. According to the SNW a resident of Welwitschia Park 2 phoned the emergency number just after 2:00 in the morning asking for immediate assistance as someone was trying to break open her front door. The members of the Neighbourhood Watch responded quickly and found one perpetrator casually crossing Welwitschia Street heading west. After an enquiry the person initially told the members that two unknown guys had just tried to rob him. “After being cross-examined by members of Nampol's Crime Prevention Unit, he admitted that there were two of them,” the SNW revealed; and: “We eventually found the second perpetrator who was hiding on one of the roofs of the complex.” Both suspects were arrested. The SNW thanks all members who had immediately responded and the members of the Crime Prevention Unit who rendered assistance. On the same day another break-in was recorded at the Maritim Apartments in Strand Street. The residents were not at home when the suspect(s) gained access through an open window after he/they forced open the burglar bars. The suspect(s) managed to steal an Acer Notebook with some paint blotches on it, a police mens watch, two ladies watches and a small green blanket. No arrests have been made yet. In another incident an unknown perpetrator smashed a window of a vehicle parked next to a house in Dünen Road, Kramersdorp at approximately 21:00 on Sunday night. He stole a lady's handbag. Members of the SNW managed to recover the handbag a few houses further down the street with all the personal documents intact. The cash which was in the purse was gone though.

One year lease on life for RMS Saint Helena The world's last remaining royal mail ship, RMS Saint Helena, has been given an additional year lease on life, after the British authorities decided to extend the ship's scheduled service between Cape Town and the mid-Atlantic Ocean islands of Saint Helena and Ascension by another year. The ship was due to retire in the months to come, following the commissioning of an international airport at Saint Helena. However, within weeks of the supposed official opening of the airport in May this year, it was decided to postpone commissioning as one of the runways was subjected to a dangerous wind shear factor that could jeopardise the safe take-off and landing of large passenger aircraft. Time is needed to study the wind shear factor and to come up with engineering solutions. For the time being though RMS Saint Helena, which is no unfamiliar visitor to the port of Walvis Bay, will continue to operate its scheduled service and keep the islands connected to the west coast ports of Southern Africa. ¡The commissioning of the international airport at Saint Helena is holding strategic possibilities for the recently commissioned Walvis Bay International Airport as connecting flight hub and last refuelling point.

While fire fighters were busy extinguishing a shack fire on Saturday evening, a yet unknown person destroyed a window of the fire truck “Ou Touns”. The fire brigade has made a case of malicious damage to property. No arrest has been made yet.

Fire Truck vandalised while fire fighters did their job Erwin Leuschner

A truck of the Swakopmund Fire Brigade was maliciously damaged over the weekend while the firefighters were busy extinguishing a shack fire close to the NHE houses between Mondesa and DRC. “We made a case with the police after a passer-by threw a rock at one of our trucks which destroyed a window,” said Fire Chief Adri Goosen to namib times. According to Goosen the incident occurred at about 20:00 on Saturday evening. The fire brigade was called out to the scene where two shacks caught fire. The reason for the blaze is not yet known, but fortunately nobody was hurt. “At the scene itself the people and onlookers were very calm. It was apparently a person walking past that threw a rock at the truck,” Goosen said. The rock destroyed a window of the MAN fire truck known as “Ou Touns”, which has a capacity to carry 5000 litres of water. After the act of vandalism the person ran off into the night and escaped. Goosen calls on the public to remain calm and “let the fire fighters do their job.” The Swakopmund fire brigade is regularly faced with challenges during fire incidents, especially when shacks are burning. During the Town Council meeting at the end of July Mayor Paulina Nashilundo lashed out at the community saying that it is disturbing that members of the public hinder the fire brigade from carrying out their duty. “It is disturbing that water hydrants and other equipment are damaged during these incidents,” she said and called on the public to remain vigilant.

Advantage team before the award's event PRESS RELEASE:

Advantage Y&R Take Flight at 2016 Loerie Awards Durban, 21 August : Advantage Y&R's #DontWashMeNAM campaign for the City of Windhoek has flown away with 2 awards at the 2016 Loerie Awards, held in Durban between 15 and 21 August. The water-awareness campaign grabbed a Silver Loerie in the Live Events Sponsorship Category, and a Bronze Loerie in the Transit and Air Category for the Namibian advertising agency. Toufic Beyhum, Creative Director at Advantage Y&R, said: “These wins are vital for the upliftment of the Namibian advertising industry. The Loerie Awards are adjudicated by judges from Europe, the USA and South Africa, which proves that it is possible for us to produce local work that is relevant, and which is also recognised internationally.” #DontWashMeNAM is an awareness campaign created to draw attention to the drought the country is currently suffering from, and to discourage car-owners from washing their cars. The Agency hired 8 Namibian artists to create works of arts on dusty car windshields to prove that cool cars don't need to be clean. The cars were displayed at an Alternative Art Exhibition, and then driven in a parade along Eveline Street in Windhoek, an area notorious for illegal car washes which waste huge amounts of water. Truda Meaden, Managing Director at Advantage Y&R: “We're proud of the work done on this campaign. Not only was it creative and eye-catching, it also shook Namibians up, kick-starting important conversations and changing behaviour. These Loerie Awards are the cherry-on-top.” The Loeries® are Africa and the middle East's premiere initiative to recognise, reward, inspire and foster creative excellence in the brand communication industry.

Mr Marco Swarts, Chief Executive Officer of the Municipality of Swakopmund. MultiChoice Namibia capitalised on the official opening of its new look branch to celebrate the video entertainment provider's 19 year track record of enriching lives in the Erongo region by way of investment in the local economy and corporate social responsibility efforts. Through its Swakopmund operation, MultiChoice Namibia is able to contribute towards employment creation in the Erongo region, including 5 staff members, 13 retailers, 1 agent and 14 accredited installers. Roger Gertze, General Manager of MultiChoice Namibia stated that their Swakopmund branch has been instrumental in making positive contributions to raise the Erongo region's profile, including the recent accolade for Hentiesbaai with Kwêla's Dorp van die Jaar, Zing on KykNet; Big Brother contestant visits to Namibia; Fiesta and Egoli to name but a few. He also announced that a live broadcast of KykNET's popular programme, Toks and Tjops, will take place at the Strand Hotel on 2nd September 2016. In terms of value-addition to the tourism industry, Mr. Gertze commented: “We believe that this branch contributes greatly, not only to single view subscribers, but also to the many hotels, tourist destinations and guesthouses. The DStv premium offering ensures that the service to the tourism industry in the region remains a solid contribution to economic investment. In addition, Swakopmund has become the destination of choice for many of MultiChoice Namibia's and MultiChoice Africa's agents and management conferences.” In line with MultiChoice's core social investment of education, a total of 15 schools in the Erongo region benefited from the MultiChoice Resource Centre programme, of which each school received a flatscreen TV, DStv Explora, dish kit and access to the DStv educational bouquet. To honour of the purpose of enriching lives, MultiChoice Africa employees across the Continent made personal monetary contributions to give back to the Swakopmund community, following a MultiChoice conference they attended in Swakopmund earlier this year. These contributions added up to N$10 000, and was handed over to Tears of Hope, a welfare organisation that offers a place of safety for vulnerable children on 17 August .

Rossmund continues winning streak

Namib Diesel Social Doubles League

The lawn bowling club at Rossmund has been swamped with success this past month. After winning the National League honours in all categories two weeks ago they have now taken the honours again in winning the Namibian Coastal League against Namib Park. On Saturday the points were split 5 all but on Sunday Rossmund won 8 points with Namib Park winning only 2 points thus giving the over all win over four games to Rossmund B.C. 27 - 13 SFC Squash Notes:

064-CUP by Guan’s

Sat. 13 September 2016 SFC Squash Club hosted our annual 064 CUP sponsored by GUAN'S Packaging. This competition is an inter club competition between SFC & Buccaneers squash clubs. The competition comprises of an “A”, “B” and social teams of five players each competing on strengths vs strengths basis. This year Buccaneers kicked some proverbial behinds with a convincing win over SFC Squash Club, winning with 44 points to 13. Congratulations to Buccaneers Squash Club, there will be revenge next year. We would also like to thank GUAN'S Packaging for their continued sponsorship every year.

The Games come to an end All roads lead to home after the 2016 Summer Olympics, hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; as the Olympics Namibian Team head home, including Anna-Mart Kruger, physiotherapist and resident of Walvis Bay. The closing ceremony of the 2016 Olympics was held on Sunday, 21 August, at the Maracanã Stadium, Rio de Janeiro. After 17 days of intensity and many triumphs, the annual sports event was concluded in true Brazilian style with a carnival themed evening. The baton was then handed to 2020 hosts, Tokyo.

It's just over the halfway point and quite a few interesting matches still to come, as quite a few teams are still tying in certain positions. The next 3 rounds will definitely separate the top dogs from the rest of the pack. The results for the Wednesday the 17th August are as follows:A Section: Furious 2 [Stefan van Tonder/Michael Stauder] bt Big Shots [Wynand Breytenbach/Jacques Steenkamp] 3-0. The Furious 2 they were, Stefan/ Michi literally blasting Wynie/Jacques off the court. SeaNam [Sergio Figueiredo/Trevor Grane] bt Bossies [Leslie Bosman/ Richard van der Meer] 3-0. The way Serg/Trev climbed into the game, left Les/Rich slightly bossies. Omake [Imanuel Amorongo/Angelo Titus] bt Hot Shots [Dylan Spencer/ Brandon Grane] 3-2. These dudes need a big hand. They were 2love down got their act together won an awesome match. B Section: Beer Boasts [Trevor Heath/Jenny Pahl] bt Rent-A-Drum [Bertus Fokkens/ Blackie Zwart] 3-1. The cold conditions and slower ball suited the Beer Boasters, especially Jen's game. Flippen Jakes [Flippy Scheepers/Jaco de Jager] bt Ysters [Raymond Duvenhage/Callie Geel] 3/0. W/O. Bonnie & Clyde [Emil Dorgeloh/Chantel de Gouveia] bt Magic Mikes [Poena/Cabous Olivier] 3-0. It was a quick heist. Points wise Emil/ Chantel were quite happy with their bounty. C Section: The Gangsters [Diana Meyer/Ockie du Plessis] bt Balls of Squash [Luke Allen/Greer Coppin] 3-0. Diana/Ockie blazed their way to another important victory. Tigers [Christina/Ettienne Beukes] bt Spider Bru[Sam Webster/Bruce Stewart] 3-2. Christina/Ettienne shrugged off the spider bites, showed their claws and roared to an excellent win. The Blues Brothers[Floris Steenkamp/Ricardo von Stein] bt Chi-Slo [Doyle de Haas/Cindy Kruger] 3-2. It was a good tough match. Floris/Ricardo stuck to their guns and managed to hit the right notes in the end. Top Deck [Lindsay Lottering/Bykes Muashekele] bt Scared Hitless [Jakkie Nel/Jacques Serfontein] 3-0. Lindz/Bykes played top squash and decked Jakkie/Jacques. The point's standings at the moment is as follows: Section A. SeaNam 17; Fuel Pump Repairs Africa 15; Furious2 12; Omake 11; Big Shots 8; Hot Shots 7 & Bossies 2. Section B. Naries Boys 15; Bonnie & Clyde 15; Beer Boasts 15; Rent-A-Drum 8; Flippen Jakes 7; Ysters 6 & Magic Mikes 1. Secton C. The Gangsters 20; Top Deck 20; Chi-Slo 17; Tigers 14; The Blues Brothers 11; Balls of Squash 7; Scared Hitless 7 & Spider Bru 5. See ya Wednesday.. Cheers n beers!
