An investigation will be launched into the allegations which could involve several of Katiti’s employees at the NIP.

The recent rains, coupled with Walvis Bay’s ageing sewer system, accelerated the formation of sinkholes at various points across the harbour town. The road was treacherous since the announcement of the mine's “mothballing”. Workers staged a demonstrations and also took their plight right to the doorstep of Governor Mutjavikua. Governor Mutjavikua explained this week that marathon negotiation sessions had been ongoing since 7 June. The end-result was an amicable agreement which, amidst the sad news of the effective

closure of the mine until further notice, would still ensure workers retrenched are receiving a fair share of their dues. Clr Mutjavikua thanked the two parties involved, LHU and MUN, for understanding the issues affecting the employees and said the agreement ensures that for the next months to come, employees of LHU still have food on the table. The agreement was signed by Clr Mutjavikua, the local branch manager of MUN, Paulus Iipumbu, and LHU's management team. The agreement makes provision for LHU to pay a retrench-

ment package equal to a notice pay-out of two months (Total Cost of Employment) as well as a severance pay-out equal to two months as well as a certain amount for every year of service. The Mine will also assist employees with tax directives for income tax purposes. In addition, employees owing the company relocation costs [as at signature on 18 June] will be released of payback period and/or repayment of the relocation costs.
