A view from one of the ship-to-shore cranes in the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay shows the big strides already made with the completion of the new passenger liner terminal. The passenger liner Aida Aura last week at berth number eight, her stern only meters from the new terminal she would use from the latter half of the year once the structure is fully completed. The inner-bound of the terminal will be used as a second small craft harbour for the tug fleet that would serve the new container terminal.

∙After Namport second biggest power consumer Floris Steenkamp The gears of production will soon start to turn for Seaflower Pelagic Processing in Walvis Bay. Final preparations are now made for the company’s first fishing vessel to go to sea and to return with enough catches to systematically get the production processes going. Seaflower Pelagic Processing aims to catch and process 50 000 tons of horse mackerel in its first year of operation and has the means to double that production output in time with joint-venture horse mackerel quota holders. Rössing workers demonstrate in solidarity with bus drivers Sharlien Tjambari Employees of the Rössing Uranium Mine held a peaceful demonstration yesterday and handed over a petition which expressed their dissatisfaction with the manner in which nine bus drivers were charged for an alleged unlawful work stoppage and subsequent withholding their bonuses. At the start of November 2018, Rössing and current Regional Chairperson Commander, management allegedly without consulting Abiud Kapere, and Veteran Unionist Festus employees introduced contractor buses with Shikongo were present to show support. An employee claims to have suffered a miscarriage as a result of traveling on these busses. By 8 November, employees in an outcry requested for the immediate cancellation of these busses. They cited safety, health and job performance as reasons for the request. On 14 November employees of Rössing Uranium mine refused to get onto the contractor busses. According to Johannes Amutenya, the trade union representative at Rössing Uranium, on that day the Rössing management reached an agreement with the employees and the contractor busses were stopped. Amidst this the bus drivers were charged with unlawful stoppage of work and their bonuses were withheld. Yesterday, workers of the Rössing Uranium Mine handed a petition to management, demanding all charges against the bus drivers to be dropped. Workers argue these drivers were caught up in the middle of the storm but at the same time demanded the transport management department to be held accountable for the whole debacle. Workers feel they should have been consulted on the decision made by the transport management department. The petition reads: “the action against bus drivers is baseless as it is bad faith negotiation and unprocedural. We demand the immediate withdrawal of the case against the bus drivers and the planned scheduled hearing for today and we demand disciplinary action to be taken against the aforementioned culprits”. Former military man pays admission of guilt on Meersig “shooting spree” Staff Reporter The retired military officer who went on a brief shooting rampage in Meersig's Extension 2 in March last year, among others injuring one of his four dogs during the shooting, will pay an admission of guilt fine for the offence. Close to one year after the horror scene, when the 60-year-old Phillemon Eino Natangwe went on a shooting rage targeting his dogs, Natangwe can count himself fortunate to only walk away with a fine. Members of the Namibian Police's task force had to enter Natangwe's home on that day to overpower and arrest him. Members of the public were horrified to witness the shooting and ensuing drama with Natangwe's wife phoned the Police who promptly reacted. Natangwe made several court appearances in the town's magistrate's court on charges relating to the Contravention of the Arms and Ammunition Act; the illegal discharge of a fire arm in a public area; negligent handling of a firearm when under the influence of an intoxicating liquor and charges under the Animal Protection Act. After agreeing to the admission of guilt on 15 January, the case was withdrawn by the Public Prosecutor under Section 57 of the Criminal Procedure Act.

Namibia and South Africa signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the areas of aquaculture and fisheries on Monday (21 January). The signing ceremony took place in Windhoek and representing the two Governments were: Namibia's fisheries minister Bernhard Esau and his South African counterpart Senzeni Zokwana, South Africa's Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Namibia and South Africa are already cooperating at fisheries on international forums like joint membership in the Benguela Current Commission (along with Angola) and international fisheries management forums ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) and Seafo (Sea East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation). The memorandum of understanding signed on Monday provides for cooperation in a total of nine areas: fisheries and aquaculture research, monitoring, control and surveillance, capacity building and development, data and information, collaboration on policies, collaboration on economic development of fisheries, collaboration on value addition, collaboration on aspects of the Blue Economy and promoting and develop common positions for both countries in fisheries. Minister Esau in his keynote address at the signing ceremony explained the Namibian and South African fisheries sectors are natural partners. Namibia and South Africa experienced the same pattern when ownership in the sectors were rid from apartheid-era ownership. Geographically the countries are coastal neighbours and shares the same ocean, the South Atlantic. As a result of the geographical positioning fish species are migrating between the two countries' EEZ's and many fishing companies are integrated in both countries.

The gift of being able to give back Eileen van der Schyff The Strand Hotel Swakopmund, owned by O&L Leisure started a new initiative whereby employees within different business units at the Hotel have a say on how social responsibility funds are spent. Themed: “Social Responsibility – Giving back to the Community”, each department can choose what they want to do in this regard. Ocean Cellar Restaurant chose to donate to Hanganeni Primary School. After looking around for opportunities, we identified Hanganeni Primary School because of the challenges the school experiences. The fact that children are affected by these challenges made it even more of a viable option of how we wanted to approach this, restaurant manager at Ocean Cellar of Strand Hotel, Mervin Kamuesee, explained to Namib Times in an interview. Hanganeni Primary School has an estimated 1 300 learners. A couple of children were identified who did not have a school uniform. There were children lacking school shoes, jerseys, stationary etc. Then Mr Kamuesee learnt that the school is also battling a shortage of classroom space. “They do not have enough classrooms for all the leaners and therefor some children have afternoon classes”, explained Kamuesee. This project first gained momentum in October of 2017 when Ocean Cellar started a soup kitchen for the children. They supplied cocktail bread rolls for the learners during break. Most learners were sent to school with empty stomachs. Some students do not even have anything to eat at home. “Some parents can simply not afford to send their children to school with food, “Mr Kamuesee further explained. Ocean Cellar Restaurant raised N$9 295 through fundraising and monthly contributions. The money was put to good use. “We used this money to buy a tent and have jerseys knitted for the learners. The total donated items are as follows: soup kitchen with cocktail bread rolls every second month; 60 jerseys, 21 reams of copy paper, 15 pairs of school shoes, 20 school trousers and shirts, a tent to use as an extra classroom, 3 school bags filled with stationary for the three runners up of Hanganeni Primary School 2018.” Kamuesee ended by saying: “We are now saying farewell to this school. We believe we completed our mission with this school for now and it is time to move on to the next school, doing what we love: giving back to the community to create happiness and enhancing quality of life.”
Partnership Team Namibia (TN) and the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in January 2019 to commence with their strategic partnership. The agreement will lead to a marketing collaboration between the two organisations. Team Namibia will provide access to its traditional and digital marketing platforms to the NTB, through joint campaigns and through predominantly the regular distribution of content in order to reach the Namibian market, and increasingly, to target audiences within the region. The Namibia Tourism Board will also be encouraged to use and display the trade-marked “Supporter of Team Namibia” logo on its marketing material, both nationally and internationally, as well as to encourage tourism businesses to join Team Namibia as member. This will ensure that the Team Namibia brand will become widely recognised in support of all sectors and industries in Namibia. The most prominent display will be at the upcoming International Tourism Exchange (ITB) in Berlin in March, and the Indaba Expo in Durban in May 2019, on the Namibia destination stand. In addition, there will be collaboration with regard
to the attendance and participation at selected local trade fairs, exhibitions and events. In this regard, Team Namibia plans to arrange a business-to-business networking event for Namibian manufacturers, producers and service providers to present their offering to Namibian tourism businesses. The Namibia Tourism Board supports Team Namibia's mandate to raise awareness of the need to shop, buy and procure local products and services. Next to facilitating the building of networks between businesses, it also includes the encouragement of local buyers of travel services to explore the tourism destinations and products within Namibia. Bärbel Kirchner, account director of Team Namibia, says: “Domestic travel generally can have a positive impact on Namibia's trade balance, especially if Namibians were to spend their discretionary income locally and not only import travel services by travelling to tourism destinations outside the borders of Namibia.

The train has been buried for nearly six decades now near a modern railway bridge and two people who were children at the time at Usakos had a fascinating story to tell to Namib Times this week over this vintage train which is slowly but surely emerging from its sandy time capsule. Mr Pieter Gouws and Mrs Magriet Gouws who were kids during the time the train was washed away. Mrs Gouws remembers the story her father told her about a train that washed away at the area where the train was discovered after so many years. According to Mr Gouws, he already discovered a part of this train back in 1980. He was attending school in Usakos and his family had a smallholding close to the bridge. Through the years his curiosity grew on the subject. He always wanted to know how the train ended up where it was, buried under the sand at the railway bridge. Mrs Gouws said her father, who used to work for the Railways back then, told her that the train was transporting a certain sister Ivalda other nuns from the missionary at Usakos to Swakopmund. “When it left the station, the train was on a downhill trajectory between the station and the river. On that fateful night in 1940 it was raining On that fateful night in 1940 it was raining hard and the river was flowing. The railway line was established on a man-made embankment and the conductor, a certain Lucky Steenkamp, realised disaster was fast approaching if the train reached the railway line where the river already flooded the embankment. Steenkamp attempted in vain to engage the train's emergency brakes and soon it was also clear the railway line had already partly washed away, ex-plained Gouws. The train derailed and one by one the locomotive and the carriages tipped over and fell into the water. The occupants of the train managed to escape before the train was complete into the water and it started to wash away in the strong current. “I am not sure if this train that washed away and the one discovered by my husband are the same train. You can clearly see as a result of soil erosion the train is revealing itself. Albeit the largest part of the train remains buried in its sandy time capsule. Could this be the train which derailed in 1940? Was there another locomotive that derailed in those early years? The Gouws family says they reside at Usakos for the biggest of their lives and cannot recall another incident. According to the Chief Executive Officer of Usakos Town Council Mr Ivan Lombard (on picture with the Gouws'), Trans Namib Holdings will at some point go and excavate the locomotive and other remnants, in order to pin-point its origins. “We are excited about this. We can transform this into another visitor's attraction for our town. A Museum is soon to open at Usakos where the current town council offices are situated. A discovery like this will be a huge feather in our town's tourism hat”, he explained. Johan Burger Ek het vir jare oor daardie treinbrug gery sonder om bewus te wees van die geskiedenis. Margaret Gouws Phillip Ford the people of Usakos tried very hard to save that train. That is why it is removed from the station where it was in the way of all lorry's comming from Swakop. Johan Mynhardt Margaret Gouws respect for the Usakos people that go out of their way to "save" Usakos. The station train is just one of many actions by concerned

Blue Waters appoints new head coach Rudi Bowe
Namibian kickboxing champion Lesley !Hoaeb
Lesley !Hoaeb with Johannes Gottwald from Germany at the Battle of Atlanta
Namibian kickboxer Lesley !Hoaeb learned the sport of kickboxing seven years ago and to date he has established himself as one of the finest kickboxers in the world. Born in Fransfontein in 1991, the Super-Lightweight division kickboxer started kickboxing in 2011 and to date has won numerous titles in countries such as United States of America, South Africa, Brazil and Botswana. His achievements outside the country prompted him to invest his kickboxing skills by establishing a martial arts school in his home town of Walvis Bay, aimed at creating more awareness of the sport, which operates without a sponsor unlike other sport codes who enjoys funding from the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) for administration purposes. Some of the titles !Hoaeb has won include first place at the US Open World Championships (Orlando, Florida, USA) - Clash sparring, the US Open World Championships (Orlando, Florida, USA) – Continuous and Points Sparring all in 2015. He also won the Battle of Atlanta World Championships (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) in 2016, followed it up with the Jungle War (Johannesburg, South Africa) Points and Semi-Contact in 2016. Other accolades was when he won the Battle of Atlanta World Championships (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) – Semi-Contact, the ADCC JiuJitsu Championships (Johannesburg, South Africa) Jiu-Jitsu in 2017 and the African Continental Games (Gaborone, Botswana) Points and Continuous Sparring first place in 2018 and the Battle of Atlanta World Championships (Atlanta, Georgia, USA) Sport Jiu-Jitsu also in 2018. The Namibian kickboxer said “I started the sport of kickboxing in 2011, with an aim of travelling globally and to make the sport of kickboxing a professional sport code. I currently own a dojo (martial arts school) with 109 students. I teach children in my dojo on Self-defence for both male and female. I am very lucky to be one of the 18 children who got school and hostel fees sponsored by Philip Muller, whom I also call my father. “I have supportive parents” !Hoaeb added.
Lesley !Hoaeb with his students at the dojo
Philip Muller decided to invest in him after he saw a potential, and opened the dojo for me and is his sole sponsor for all the five trips to the USA and all other continental championships that he competed in. !Hoaeb trains six days per week for two hours per day and when it comes to eating he normally eat everything, but before competitions or fights he adjust to his diet according to his weight. All the championship that he participates in is important for him but the UAEJJF National PRO GI championship that were held in Johannesburg was the most one as it was the only way he could measure himself against the best as there is not any challenges in Namibia. “At this stage I am undefeated and ranked number two in the Battle of Atlanta World Championships,” says, !Hoaeb. !Hoaeb is a big fan of Michalis "Iron Mike" Zambidis, professional kick boxer and martial artist, who also happens to be a 16 time Middleweight World Champion. If it was not for his supportive parents, !Hoaeb could have not gone this far in the sport. !Hoaeb declared, “Mike Zambidis, he is small in stature, but like dynamite. Despite having my own martial arts school I belong to the Namibia Ring Contact Fighting Arts International (RCFAI) Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay. This year one of my lowest points was to participate in the World championships without National Colours. This year has been a very successful year for me with lots of achievements and the Namibian Kickboxing Federation is busy planning my title fight in the USA next year in June. Kickboxing to me is a solid foundation. “My aim is one day to become Namibia's sportsman of the year as it is every athletes' dream,” !Hoaeb proclaimed. He was however unhappy with the NSC's failure to give him national colours during his participation at the World Championship in Atlanta.
Christy Guruseb the new head coach at Blue Waters FC
Christy Guruseb was appointed as the new head coach at Blue Waters Football Club. The club's executives announced that the appointment is with immediate effect and that it was ratified by a unanimous vote after considering Guruseb from various candidates for that position and that the decision was difficult as the overall standard of candidates was high. A statement the club said “When they discuss the appointment of the ideal candidate for the Blue Waters FC, they wanted someone who could come in and get the very best out of the players and also bring through some of the young talent coming out of youth structures. “When we began our search, we were determined to find someone who fits our club's core values and Guruseb's philosophical views of how to play unequivocally align with ours. We are extremely happy to welcome him to the Blue Waters Football Club family,” the clubs statement concluded. Guruseb has a distinguished background as a coach and a proven track record of developing youth players.
MX training workshop Rudi Bowe
The Dean Hoffman Motocross School hosted a success full threeday training workshop at the Swakopmund Motocross track. Ten riders with the youngest being 8-years-old, and the oldest 32-years-of age participated in the training event and had the opportunity to learn from one of the best coaches Hoffman, from South Africa during the past ten years has travelled internationally to many British and World Championship races, where he has worked closely with many top riders and develop riding and coaching skills. Hoffman said that MX is a very intense sport therefore skills development for riders is a must as it will lead to better skills and less injuries. All the riders that participated in the training were taught different techniques to upgrade their skills in body position, braking techniques, cornering, starts, jumping skills, and riding ruts. “I was very impressed with all riders, especially Liam Gilchrist who is currently the fastest 125cc rider in Namibia” Hoffman said.
