Driver faces multiple charges after car crash

A case of Culpable Homicide, among other charges, was opened against a seriously injured driver after a female passenger died when he lost control of the open-back pick-up, he was driving carrying seven passengers.

The vehicle veered off the road and overturned on the D36 road between Omaruru and Uis last Saturday.

The driver will also be charged with Reckless and/ or Negligent Driving, Driving an Unroadworthy Vehicle and Driving Without a Valid Driver's Licence. A 48-year-old female passenger succumbed to the serious nature of her injuries at the accident scene. The driver and remaining passengers all escaped the accident with serious injuries. The driver will be charged once he has recovered.

We believe the golf course's location will attract thousands of golfers from across the globe to come and experience our desert master piece.In an extremely arid country like Namibia, water conservation is always a priority, and The President's Links will be using electro coagulation technology to convert water that was formerly effluent, exiting the Walvis Bay municipality, into an odourless source of irrigation water for use for irrigating the golf course. The municipality has granted the estate three million litres of water a day, currently not fit for human consumption and cannot be purified to potable drinking water. All water not used on the estate will then be sent back to the municipality for use in the surrounding community,” van Schalkwyk said.

The President's Links is complying fully with the Edge (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) Certification system of the International Finance Corporation. Edge certification gives owners the assurance that their homes are built to be resource efficient. By focusing on energy and water saving initiatives, as well as ensuring the maximum use of raw materials in their most natural state, the estate has made a minimum of 20% savings across the board.

Another one bites the dust for TransNamib Yet another TransNamib locomotive derailed close to the Swakopmund Railway Station this Sunday.

The locomotive was traveling from Walvis Bay towards Swakopmund with only the locomotive operator, Mr Ndjamba Eail on board when the derailment happened at a curve. The locomotive tipped over on its left side. Eail escaped unscathed.

Namibia poised to become major renewable hydrogen producer Lüderitz has been earmarked as a serious growth zone. The worldwide group has embraced this growth plan. Namibian authorities have already been invited to current their post-Covid financial restoration plan on the World Financial Discussion board in Davos. Namibia has now already sourced €40 million (N$712 million) in funding from Germany to make use of feasibility research and pilot tasks associated with 'inexperienced hydrogen'.

Tourism town, Swakopmund attracts hundreds of people during the festive season as people flock to the coast to spend the festive season at the coast with their families.

O n F r i d a y, 1 7 December West Coast Safety Initiative (WCSI) counted 360 vehicles per hour travelling towards the coast. Operational Co-ordinator of WCSI, Aubrey Oosthuizen said this was the highest count for the day.

Traffic volumes dropped to 134 vehicles per hour travelling towards the coast around 18:30 on Friday afternoon.

On Saturday morning, West coast Safety Initiative counted about 207 vehicles per hour travelling towards the coast.

Eileen van der Schyff A 54-year-old man was charged with murder after he set chase and shot one of five suspects in the head, a 25-year-old Namibian male, after allegedly firing multiple warning shots.

The shooting incident happened after the suspects robbed him at knifepoint minutes before, near Ndume Square, Kuisebmond on Saturday this weekend. The suspect who got shot succumbed on the spot, while the other four suspects fled the scene. According to police reports, a Samsung Galaxy J 5 was found next to the shot suspect and a knife was found in his pocket.

An accident on the B2 route at the Goanikontes turnoff, involving a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a BMW Sedan was reported on Monday this week. The accident happened when an overtaking manoeuvre went wrong. No injures were reported

Woermann Brock in Walvis Bay fell prey to burglars on Monday evening.

It is alleged that around 23:45 two unknown male suspects gained access to the store through the roof of the store and cut the alarm wiring, whereafter they forcibly opened the office door, and escaped with N$12 100.00.

The total amount of cash stolen is yet to be determined as police investigate the incident. The police are still investigating the matter. No arrests have been made.

Tesla Energy solutions to launch Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Walvis Bay Eileen van der Schyff

Andrews' motion goes unopposed Piquet Jacobs

During the ordinary council meeting held at the Kuisebmond Council Chambers on 16 December, a motion tabled by Cllr Olivia Andrews to bring financial relief to single residential and business rate payers of Walvis Bay was submitted unopposed for further consideration as Walvis Bay Mayor, Trevino Forbes, relates to 2021 being a difficult year for all.

In Cllr Andrews motion address, she highlighted that a fair number of businesses countrywide have either closed or are not operating at full capacity due to the hardships brought on by the pandemic, and as a result has impacted their cashflow negatively. “The purpose of this motion is to assist individuals and business rate payers of Walvis Bay to recover financially from the negative impact COVID-19 has caused in their day-to-day lives. Therefore, this motion recommends the writing-off of all interest levied on municipal accounts of developed properties in line with available legislation, policies, and guidelines since commencement of COVID-19 in March 2020; writing-off of all pensioners, and deceased (who's estate cannot settle their outstanding debt) ratepayers accounts up until the date of

passing on; that the charging of interest rates on all municipal services be put off for one year to allow for account recovery; administration to investigate the possibilities of reducing the current interest rate charged on arrear accounts; and all debt on municipal owned and rental properties be written off.”

Mayor Trevino Forbes accepted this motion for further consideration as he took word to the many difficulties faced by Walvis Bay residents during 2021. The mayor highlighted that 2021 will be a busy year for the Walvis Bay Council, as they will be hard at work to improve service delivery, attract investment, increase employment and support youth development. Forbes also put emphasis on the importance for everyone to stay safe and to adhere to COVID-19 regulations, stating, “the virus does not move on its own, it's moved by people.”

Namibian-European world alternative folk Band Wilde Kind releases Omhanda Album co-written by Christoff from Walvis Bay Omhanda is the Oshiwambo word for rhinoceros. It's the language of the Aawambo, spoken by almost half of Namibia's population. Rhinos are special to Namibia and the world. They have roamed the earth for millions of years, and are a vital part of a healthy ecosystem. Yet this mighty beast is now fighting for its survival, and has become an emblem of conservation around the globe. Sadly, the rhino is not the only animal whose survival is threatened.

The song pays homage to animals who face extinction due to human action and inaction, among them the rhino, elephant, the pangolin and many more.

The song's brass section was created to imitate elephants trumpeting, while the voices of the children's choir reflect the innocence of a species threatened by extinction, as well as a hope and plea to preserve and protect the natural world for future generations.

Wilde Kind's new album is a homage to home and nature. Danella, lyricist and songwriter of most of the songs on “Omhanda”, has two homes: her birthplace Namibia and her current home-base The Hague in the Netherlands. Her songs reflect her love and concerns for the state of nature in Africa and the world.

Her love of rain (Liquid Sunshine) and endless road trips through the desert (Lost the Sunscreen) on the one hand, and sociopolitical issues such as poaching (“Omhanda”) and global conflicts (“Earth for Sale”) on the other hand, make for a diverse range of listening experiences.

Listeners are taken on a journey through many different feelings and places - and that in a mix of three languages (English, Afrikaans and Oshiwambo).

From slow and dark folk ballads (Die Hoofstraat) to happy indie-pop singalongs (Darling Sun), the album offers many delights. The songs are written by Christoff who hails from Walvis Bay.

Gift Of Love This Festive Season The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group, through its subsidiaries, Hangana Seafood and Kraatz Marine, on 15 December, unveiled a sponsored playground for the children of the Topnaar community. On this day, about 120 children made their way to the playground and enjoyed snacks and a day of fun.

The O&L Group has been hosting Christmas parties for approximately 400 orphans and vulnerable children every year since 2004. Hangana Seafood and Kraatz Marine typically host the coastal Christmas party on behalf of all the O&L subsidiaries, however, this year instead of hosting a party, employees from the two companies joined forces to construct a playground that would give the children of the Topnaar community many more days of fun.

Hangana Seafood Managing Director (MD), Herman Theron, stated at the unveiling, “An effort of this nature is precisely what our O&L Group Purpose, 'Creating a future, enhancing life', is all about. We hope that through play, exploration and the building of friendships around this playground, the healthy development of these children will be strengthened, and their lives and futures enriched.”

Theron extended his thanks to all those who assisted in making this play area a reality, including the Living Waters Churchfor granting O&L permission to build on the piece of land bestowed to them.

“In closing, let's continue to invest in the development of our children and look after this playground so it may be a source of joy for young ones for a long time to come. The annual Nedbank Food Fest which was held in Swakopmund from 16 to 18 December saw flocks of holiday makers and food lovers'.

The MTN Festival Cup Walvis hosts Pro Tennis Academy Walvis Tennis Club beat the Pro Tennis Academy from Windhoek (WHK) 18-7 in a tournament recently held at Walvis Bay. It was an amazing day of tennis in the third competition between the two clubs.

Walvis Tennis Club Captain, Anthony Block thanked everyone for the effort they put in to make the day successful.

The winner of the MTN Cup Jason Barnard with the sponsor representative Mark Barnard and the other winner of the day Duane Saunders The MTN Festival Cup was played on 17 and 18 December at the Walvis Bay Golf Course.

MTN is a new sponsor to the club and they came in big for the Festive Cup. 40 players entered not knowing what the prizes were going to be and in ideal weather over both days scoring was good.

After day one there were a few 47's, a 46 or two and a 45 leading the pack. But day two sorted out some of the front runners and at the end of it all it was Jason Barnard and Duane Saunders coming out on top with a solid 95 points. Second place went to Mark Barnard and Wynand Moller on 92 points.

There was no count out so third place went Uwe Bachmann and Shane Westerdale and Amandio Sardinha and Wayne Hart tied on 91 points.

All players receive a meat hamper to the tune of N$800 and at the prize giving, Mark Barnard representing MTN promised to be back next year. On the photo are Jason Barnard, Mark Barnard and Duane Saunders.

There was also a lot of other golf happening in the Erongo Region last week. At the Henties Bay Open and it was our own Kevin Wentzel who won the overall gross with a score of 111 with Henjan van der Hyde ended up runner up in the á' division gross. Ben Louw was the nett runner up in the 'b' division. While at Rossmund there was a junior event and out up and coming junior, Kyle Johnson was the overall winner on the day. Reports are that Lembi Niilenge won the girls division.

Atlantis I SFC League Division champs Rudi Bowe

Twenty teams participated in the Swakopmund Football Club (SFC) 5-a-side soccer tournament last weekend at the SFC fields in Swakopmund.

The one-day-tournament, with a low turnout produced good soccer for players and fans with 58 games that produced 260 goals.

Atlantis, I beat Atlantic II 5-3 in the final of the League Division and a youthful SFC III as they beat a well-experienced Sparta 2-0 in a penalty shootout after a two-all-draw at full-time in the final of the Social ivision.

The annual SFC X-Mas Cup will be from 27 to 29 December 2021 at the SFC fields in Swakopmund.

Swakopmund clamps down on discharge of fireworks this festive season Sharlien Tjambari

Swakopmund officials are warning residents to be extra careful when setting off fireworks this festive season. The council says not only will the use of fireworks without a permit not be allowed, the discharge of fireworks within the town, including private homes and gardens without prior permission from the local authority is prohibited and against the law.

The discharge of fireworks in residential areas is a criminal offence. According to the Swakopmund council, the loud unexpected sounds from fireworks causes stress and anxiety in some people and is especially traumatising for small children

and pets. Fireworks have a different effect on an animal's nervous system than other loud sounds like thunder. Sounds from fireworks trigger the animals fight-or-flight instinct causing them to run away.

The public is requested to assist the council in the prevention of the use of fireworks within the residential areas by reporting the offenders to the relevant authorities. A fifth consecutive win for Gasbottles Rudi Bowe

Gasbottles emerged as Cup winners for fifth consecutive year at the annual Sparta Six – a – Side Touch-Rugby tournament held on Saturday 18 December at the Sparta Rugby field in Walvis Bay. Gasbottles beat Erongo Salvage 2-0 in the cup final and in the Plate final Souties beat Namlub 1-0 to be crowned as winners.

The eight teams in the tournament that produced some fastpassing and hard-running matches are Souties, Sparta, The Guys, Erongo Salvage, Namlub, El Maestros, Gasbottles and The Barbarians.

At the beauty pageant that forms part of the annual rugby touchies tournament Ruby Cloete from Souties was crowned as Miss Touchies 2021 with Shakira Borges from Gasbottles as her first princess and Kiesha Isaacs from Sparta the second princess.

Contributed On Wednesday we had the ARTISAN BAKERY Wednesday WINNER of WINNERS at the Walvis Bay Golf Course were held on Wednesday 15 December.

All the 17 winners of the Wednesday competition throughout the year were in the field as well as four of those who did not win during the year. In near ideal weather conditions scoring was good and at the end of the day it was Bossie Bosman who won a count out on 21 points (count out 10) from Shane Westerdale (count out 9) to walk away with the trophy and the title of Wednesday Winner of Winner.

Thanks to Uwe for the yearlong sponsorship. There will be a new sponsor for the 2022 year so watch this space.

Over the weekend we had a very big field of 64 SAGES from throughout the country play in the WB Golf Club leg of the National SAGES. This year it was sponsored by Boel Grobelaar, Jakkie de Witt, Pieter Hamann and Wayne Hart with Hart sponsoring all the fish for the lunch as well as ensuring all players received frozen fish as part of their prizes.

Etosha Fishing also sponsored canned fish which also was given to all the players. Our thanks as always, goes to the sponsors without which we certainly cannot host these types of events. Thanks Boel Grobelaar, Jakkie de Witt, Wayne Hart and Nezette.

From day one it was Tienie de Wett who shot an opening round of 65 and followed it with a flat round of 72 to win by 6 shots. Second place went to Eddie van Wyk, winning a count out from Troffie van der Colf, on 1 under par for the two rounds. Anton Welgemoed was fourth on level par and Chris Bothma won a count out from Danie van Antwerpen on one over par to end in fifth place.

There were meat, frozen fish and canned fish prizes for the top 40 players, while from 41 to 64 all received frozen and canned fish.

The stats are out of what the combined ages of the players and it was a whopping 4 013 years with the average being 64 years and 8 month.

The oldest player was 82 while the youngest a junior of 51. We look forward to next year where we hope to improve on the 4 013 combined ages.

Torpedo's Dart Club Premier League champs The Erongo dart region hosted the 2021 Premier league, semi final and finals on the 10th December 2021 at HardeKole Pub and Grill in Swakopmund.

Torpedo's Dart Club from Walvis Bay is the 2021 champions of the factory fashion & super sport dart league. Great darts and great improvements from some teams and players at a tight competition, but at the end there can only be one winner.

The Erongo darts region would like to thank each and everyone for their love and support towards the clubs. It highly appreciated. Next year it's going to be better and hope to see new teams taking part playing this wonderful game.

Goju-Ryu Karate Club in Walvis Bay awards students Goju-Ryu Karate Club in Walvis Bay, on the last day of their karate classes for the year, awarded their students with floating trophies sponsored by Jan Buys.

Sensei Nico Maritz handed out floating trophies to the following students: Best Attendance for the senior class - Cathryn Claasen, Best Attendance for the junior class Hardus Naudè, Best Performance for the senior class - Ryan Shiyukifeni and Best Performance for the junior class - Oscar van Reenen.

Karate classes will resume from 11 January 2022. We wish all our students a happy relaxing holiday.
