The mayor said that fromnear-declineand abandonment, Lüderitzisenvisagedtobecome the economic epicentre for national developmentprojects, like the envisaged Green Hydrogen projects and the ongoing exploration for gas andoil.
McKay said, “these projects are definitely going to change the socio-economic landscapeofourtowndue to the foreseen influx ofpeople.”
McKay informed the President that while welcoming all developmental projects and specifically the latterproject, thetown council is excited but equallyconcerned.
"As the Mayor of Lüderitz, I need to behonest and admit that the Lüderitz Town Council does not have the required resources to provide all expected municipal services, urban planning, and development associated with the Green Hydrogen Project. Our local authority in Lüderitz is expected tocreate, expand, and developcertainfacilities or infrastructures inordertoprovidethe required municipal services to the community and, similarly, create a very conducive environment for businesses to thrive,” he said and added, “my humble appealtodayisforour President to intervene in terms of governmental support and possibleco-ordination because this matter of the Green Hydrogen project coming to Lüderitz needs to be prioritised.”
McKay argued that the harbour town should, therefore, be regarded as a special caseintermsofcapital fundinginsupportand preparation of the Green Hydrogen project.
The Lüderitz mayor said, “we urgently need the intervention of the central government to address some of the challenges which need to be attended to with urgency and that the issue of urban planning and development, and the financing thereof, must be collectively addressed. We need urgent funding, as per our projections, in order nottoderaileconomic development and growth opportunities for our people. Our line ministry of urban and rural developmentneedstocomeon board with urgen-cy Lüderitz needs to be prioritisedwithurgency."
Mckay pleaded President Hage Geingob to increase capital fun- dingtothetownsothat it may be better positioned to provide municipal services with the advent of the Green Hydrogen Project.
The mayor concluded thatLüderitzshouldbe regarded as a special caseintermsofcapital funding, in support of andpreparationforthe Green Hydrogen Project.
