Double culpable homicide accused found guilty Piquet Jacobs

The driver, Jean Cilliers (23), involved in a gruesome collision that claimed the lives of two Otjiwarongo residents at the corner of 5th Road and Union Street in Walvis Bay on 28 June 2014 was found guilty on two counts of culpable homicide. Estelle Louw and Joseph Gretorius Christiaan were killed instantly when the Hyundai Getz sedan (N4639OT) they were travelling in was struck by a Land Cruiser (N149-006W) whose driver allegedly ignored a stop sign and was driving at a high speed. The impact of the collision was so great, it could be heard within a 800m radius. Two other passengers in the sedan sustained injuries and had to be extricated from the wreckage with hydraulic equipment, one of the two were transferred to Windhoek for treatment. The four occupants had attended a wedding in Walvis Bay and were on their way back to Otjiwarongo. Cilliers was arrested at the scene and was initially charged with culpable homicide, and drunk and reckless driving and was given bail of N$9 000. He was recently found guilty on the charges of culpable homicide by Magistrate John Liwoyo Sindano, to which he received a fine of N$20 000 or a 30 months imprisonment sentence. Accidents remain unabated as another life was claimed in a horrific crash involving a truck and Mahindra pick-up truck on the B2 route between Swakopmund and Arandis yesterday afternoon. This accident follows the, also-, fatal collision between two vehicles in the Wilhelmstal vicinity on Friday evening which killed three people in the inferno as both vehicles burst into flames. In other news, a white Golf 7 found itself in deep water when the driver managed to drive over the pavement and into the Lagoon. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, the actual cause of the accident and the series of events preceding it remains unclear.

Fishing vessel destroyed by fire at sea - crew of 25 rescued The long liner fishing vessel South West Eagle of the Merlus Group was destroyed in a fire at sea early on Sunday morning and prompted the crew to abandon the ship some five nautical miles off Pelican Point. The vessel was returning from the fishing grounds to Walvis Bay with a haul of hake, when a fire broke out shortly after midnight on Sunday. According to a reliable report the crew of South West Eagle could initially keep the fire under control, as the burning vessel was sailing for Walvis Bay. A sister ship, Ambrose Bay, was standing by to assist should something go wrong. Ambrose Bay's skipper informed the shore skipper at Walvis Bay at around 02:00 that the fire was kept under control and that the vessel was making its way to Walvis Bay. However, at around 03:00 things turned for the worse when the auxiliary engine driving the vessel's onboard firefighting system broke down. With the firefighting system knocked out the fire soon raged out of control and the skipper gave the order to abandon the ship. At that moment in time heavy fog and smoke put further challenges to the crew of the burning vessel as well as the skipper of the Ambrose Bay who was spearheading the rescue effort.

Two tugs from the port of Walvis Bay also sailed for the stricken vessel. The port captain of the port of Walvis Bay accompanied one of the tugs in person and was also seen boarding the burning vessel at some point, as the tugs were taking over the function to fight the fire. Ambrose Bay was taken on tow by one of the tugs after the fire was back under control and the vessel was docked at Hangana Seafoood Processor's quay around 06:00 yesterday. “The fact that our crew of 25 men were safe and uninjured can be attributed to a few factors. The fact that all received basic safety training and kept calm during the procedures to abandon the ship were the most important factors. The fact that the crew were saved in very difficult conditions aggravated by the smoke and fog is a miracle and we are thankful that our colleagues are safe”, a company representative said yesterday. An investigation into what caused the fire has begun. See more pictures on page 5 of today's edition.

Let’s read

The Cancer Association of Namibia recently held outreach screenings at the coast. Rolf Hansen, CEO of CAN elaborated: “Sr Christy, Rolf and Estelle of the Cancer Association of Namibia on Saturday visited Walvis Bay in the Erongo Region, where 114 ladies were screened for cervical and breast cancer, while 40 men were screened for prostate and testicular cancer. This is all done free of charge, through the National Cancer Outreach Programme.” The campaign targets both the corporate environment and local communities alike – offering access to information and medical care where often there is none readily available. This is how we help our fellow Namibians,” says Rolf. “FNB Namibia supports the great work of the Cancer Association of Namibia and as such would like to encourage everyone who would like to help CAN make more of a difference - to visit the FNB Happiness Store and donate any amount to the Cancer Association of Namibia who is listed as a beneficiary under charities. Visit the Happiness Store at www.fnbhappinessstore. com”, says Elzita Beukes, Communications Manager of FNB Namibia. This programme was initiated in August 2015 and the Cancer Association of Namibia has developed a nationwide network of partnerships with private medical centres, State care facilities and volunteers to develop a programme where awareness campaigns, educational talks, and screening sessions for breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, are conducted.

FNB Namibia proudly announced their support of the LET'S READ PROJECT, an initiative by The Namibian newspaper. Gordon Pokolo, Sponsorship Manager at FNB Namibia: “This great project is aimed at promoting literacy and a reading culture primarily among the youth in Namibia. It will also serve to assist needy communities to have access to reading material.” The bank has supported this venture with an amount of N$ 10 000 towards the bound sets of the Namibian newspaper. These will be of great value to the schools as research material for learners, and also to build up their own library collection. Gordon: “At FNB we believe that education is indeed the greatest equalizer and support this project because it has a positive impact on our schools. It has the power to create a learning conducive environment for learners. FNB Namibia is passionate about improving education in Namibia, and we are certain that the Let's Read project can make a difference in our schools and the country at large.” Given the content of The Namibian, pupils will be able to enjoy national and international news, sport, entertainment and other lifestyle issues. The project will also help gather and deliver other reading material to the needy and especially rural schools. In the past, pupils only read books and this was not enough. The project will improve their reading skills through new words and it will soon be fun for them to read the Namibian newspaper.

Adrian “Boy”Schickerling behind bars again because of extortion Founding President Nujoma humbled by naming of mining vessel in his honour Value adding to raw mineral resources and innovation in the mining sector were singled out yesterday as the critical factors for Namibia's mining industry to stay competitive and to meet the country's development goals. These statements were made at Walvis Bay respectively by Namibia's Founding President Dr Sam Nujoma and the Minister of Mines and Energy Mr Obeth Kandjoze at the christening ceremony of Debmarine Namibia's newlybuilt diamond sampling and exploration vessel, the SS Sam Nujoma. The christening ceremony was hosted at Walvis Bay for logistical reasons as Lüderitz, the vessel's home-base is very remote and many would have had difficulty to attend. Benhard Siyabonga Haipito it's good for them to enjoy their own harambee while we sea men and women still suffering to the owners of the companies and same pple who call their selves leanders still just quite, FRIDOM AND HARAMBEEE for the leader while we poor not having even a piece of land here in our mother land Peter Odendaal seems about right that a ship plundering our sea and destroying the environment should be named after the founding president! After-all thats what happened to the country after independence - so I think its quiet appropriate. Tyron Roetz Maybe you should do some research

as to how these vessels work before you make such brash statements.. They are designed to be environmentaly friendly. There are strict maripol regulations that need to be adheered to. Peter Odendaal Oh really??? They suck up everything from the sea bed including crayfish spurn , etc.. The crayfish industry in Lüderitz has TOTALLY colapsed since they started mining the seabed! Helio Paulo Please check your facts. Diamond mining occurs in deep-water outside of the crayfish areas.... And definitely no where near Lüderitz Shetunyenga Erwin Simon What does SS Nuuyona stand for?

Swakopmund resident Adrian “Boy” Schickerling (52) was arrested by officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Otjiwarongo last week Friday after he was allegedly involved in what appears to be a well organised criminal extortion swindle. He was apprehended at the Otjiwarongo Police station. According to information received by the ACC the scam was perpetrated by individuals who contacted a businessman under the pretext that he was a contractor on a certain list selected to perform construction work for Government. This businessmen was then invited to a meeting with a person pretending to be an employee of the Ministry of Works and Transport – this person informed the businessman “that he has to show his appreciation for the gesture of adding him to the list” by paying N$2 000. “The Mummy”makes worldwide opening of US$172m- receives negative reviews The first installment in Universal Pictures' “Dark Universe” series, the action-adventure film “The Mummy”, featuring scenes shot at various locations in the Erongo region some years ago has received generally negative reviews. The film nonetheless managed a worldwide opening of US$172 million (around N$2,2 billion). “The Mummy” celebrated its worldwide debut in cinemas on Friday (9 June) and can currently also be viewed in cinemas in Namibia. The film was shot on locations in Namibia, London and Surrey with the opening scenes featuring scenes in and around Swakopmund. These scenes doubled for similar scenes in Egypt and Iraq. According to international media reports, “The Mummy” had a production budget of US$125 million. Stars for feature in the film include Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise who became a familiar figure in Swakopmund during the production of the movie and also Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Courtney B Vance. The production sites included the Rössing Mountain, in the dunes, the Moonlandscape, the Rössing Mountain Airstrip and the Messum Crater. All locations are familiar sites in the Erongo region. Juergen George Mater I was in the Construction Team...People don't know how much work went into Construction on Only 1 Site... Hours, Days & even Months. Two Henties Bay residents receive brand new wheelchairs Two Henties Bay residents, 10-year-old Ester Uiras and George de Klerk (69), each received a brand-new wheelchair on Wednesday this week, thanks to a donation made by Empire Fishing Co. Fisheries Minister Bernhard Esau called on other fishing right holders to follow suit and share their profits. “I am overjoyed. I am very happy,” said Rebekka Uiras to namib times. She is the mother of Ester Uiras who was born paralyzed from the hip down and is wheelchair bound. Ester is ten years old. An operation was out of the question as there was possibility that she would be left completely paralyzed. Her spirit is remarkable and smiles a lot. “I like to play with my friends and my brother. And I like to teach my brother how to cook,” the little girl says. “It is not easy raising three children by myself,” Rebekka Uiras continues. Because of her disability Ester cannot attend school, but that doesn't stop her from chasing her dreams. While she wishes to become a lawyer, her mother wants her to go into the media industry. “I read the news to her and teach her,” she says. Vallery Uiras Thanx for that wheelchair my eie ester Mariaan De Andriano Thank you ,thank you!

Our beloved wife, mother and sister has left us on Sunday 18 June after a long hard battle. You can now finally rest in peace without all the Pain.

Liefie, Dadda, Captain Hans Each morning waking up starts with “Daddy is in Heaven”. Liefie, since you left, each day which now turned into a year, it actually, physically and emotionally hurts to wake up in the morning. Each morning I look in the mirror put on a “face for outsiders” and think “Just let me get through this day.”…get through it even though my heart is so broken that sometimes it feels as if I cannot breathe.” Sometimes I feel miserable…as if nothing except our precious daughters, your DNA replica through whom your hot warm blood flows, matters. For the first time in my life, it feels as if I live in a daze and can't see the future. My future is with you…in the past…aka…living in the past is my future. What made life really worth it, was when my soul connected with your soul…and when our love created perfect little Möllergirls…sweet and strong. Heidi-Ann and Riana got earrings shot through to commemorate Daddy's first going to Heaven Birthday. Dadda we miss you and love you more than what words can say. We love, respect, look up to, honour and adore you. You are not only our Idol but our Hero. May God bless your soul Dadda. Rest soft my Liefie. Now that hours became days, days became weeks and the months turned into a year since our incredible loss, I would like to stop a moment in our grief and turn to thankfulness and appreciation to: Family Friends Close friends of my husband Cottage Hospital staff Gabriela from St Gabriels Ambulance, Avbob Dreamword Creations, Floris Steenkamp, Jenny's Pictures, Melanie (Spot On), Astrid (Probst Bakery), Rousseau (Grapevine),AJ de Lange for the oil painting, Man's World, Veronika Awases & everyone in our hearts and not mentioned by name
