Tragedy struck at Seawork Fish Processors in Walvis Bay on Saturday morning, when one of the company's fishing vessels caught fire alongside, resulting in the death of one employee. The fishing vessel, Ocean Tide, was undergoing a refit of new fishing gear alongside when welding works aboard possibly set insulation in the hull ablaze. Seawork said in a statement yesterday the fire incident is now the subject of a forensic investigation. The Walvis Bay fire brigade, assisted by tugs of Namport and the port's fire brigade, battled the fire for more than twenty-four hours. The fire was finally put out by 17:00 on Sunday with most of the destruction confined to the wheel house, the galley below, accommodation quarters and sections of insulation in the vessel's hull. These sections of any seagoing vessel usually contain most of the combustible materials. The fire chief of the Walvis Bay municipality, Dennis Basson, Continues on page 2

yesterday praised the coordinated efforts by the fire teams, the Namibian Police and Walvis Bay Diving and Salvage to get the situation under control. Whilst the fire teams were battling the flames from the fishing jetty, the tugs sprayed water against the burning vessel's hull to cool it down sufficiently for fire teams to enter the burning vessel. Walvis Bay Diving and Salvage assisted to pump water from the burning vessel. In the event of a fire aboard a vessel, the vessel's stability is threatened by a combination of weight shifting and the amounts of water pumped into the vessel to fight the fire flowing to the lowest point, resulting in the vessel to list and in some instances topping over. “We managed to avert all these dangers. Yet it is very sad that one person lost his life in this fire incident”, said Basson to Namib Times yesterday. Adding the fire teams were also vigilant at all times to prevent the flames from spreading to the vessel's engine room, the onboard fish processing plant as well as the fuel.

She faces now faces among others an attempted murder charge, as during the assault she also throttled the child. Ockhuizen (22) hanged himself in the kitchen of his house. According to police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, information retrieved from the deceased's cell phone showed relationship issues with his girlfriend. The video recording of the suicide was found on the same phone as the information which pointed to the deceased and his girlfriend having problems. Ockhuizen's employer became concerned when he did not turn up for work on Thursday. Colleagues went to his house and when they looked through the kitchen window saw him hanging.

Seawork issued statement Seawork yesterday issued a statement in which they expressed condolences over the death of one of their employees, Matheus Hausiku, who was killed in the fire on Saturday morning. The full statement reads: On Saturday morning, 17 August, Seawork's motor fishing vessel 'Ocean Tide' caught fire while moored at the Seawork quay, where it was undergoing a refit. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed and is subject to forensic in-vestigation. On behalf of Seawork Fish Processors (Pty) Ltd and our staff, we would like to express our sincere sympathies and condolences to the family and loved ones of our colleague, brother and friend Matheus Hausiku, who tragically lost his life during the incident. Matheus worked for Seawork for thirteen years and will live on in our memories forever. At this point in time we are not able to provide any further comments on the incident until the necessary investigations are concluded”. Namport’s tug Onkoshi sprays water on the burning vessel

Lüderitz residents welcome manganese business.......but

Residents says no to “open top” containers Lüderitz residents took it to social media in recent days over concerns of trains rolling into the town with large quantities of manganese from South Africa’s Northern Cape. Trade Port has secured the export of manganese through the port of Lüderitz, but residents are not happy with the fact this mining product is transported in open top containers. They say the dust emanating from manganese is not only a health risk but is also an environmentally unfriendly substance in that it blackens any surface it gets in contact with. Resident do welcome the export business to the town, but urge both the Environment Ministry and the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) to take the exporter to task for a safer transport mode - like covered or closed containers.

PRESS RELEASE

Celebrating the circumnavigation Acclaimed musician Rafael Serrallet performed two guitar concerts in Swakopmund and Windhoek to commemorate 500 anniversaries of the first trip around the globe. Spanish guitarist Rafael Serrallet has performed concerts in Namibia to commemorate the 500 anniversaries of the first circumnavigation of the world. Hailed as a guitarist of profound and thoughtful artistry, Valencian born Rafael Serrallet is one of the biggest names in Spanish music. With a career span-

ning twenty-five years and more than a thousand concerts across eighty countries, Serrallet is probably the most internationally experienced concertos among the Spanish performers with an outstanding performance gift. He has been the first classical musician ever in playing concerts in all 7 continents (including Antarctica)

and his passionate performances and unique musical interpretation have been described as 'spellbinding and captivating. Rafael performed at the Spanish Ambassador Residence in Windhoek and the Lecture Hall of Swakopmund Museum and more than 100 people gathered in every concert. The first half of the concert that Rafael presented

was a tribute to that time and a musical fantasy of the tunes that may have been sung and played during leisure periods on board. Because of the international origin of the expedition crew, the concert gathered musical works from most of the countries they represented, and it is not accidental that most of the pieces selected are dances,

which were commonly popular during the Renaissance period. The repertoire included dances like The Almain (German dance), Gallardes, Bransles (France), Canarios (Spain),

Calate, Saltarello and Pavana (Italy), as well as Portuguese tunes. It also includes the favorite song of the Spanish King Carlos I, Mille Regretz (One thousand sorrows). Josquin's anguished tune was extremely popular and swept through Europe like a fever. This version is by the Spanish vihuelist, Luis de Narváez, transcribed for the vihuela. The second half was a homage to Spanish Music, featuring some

of the most popular Spanish composers from 18 to the 20 Century such as Ferandiere, Aguado, Arcas or Granados. These concerts were hosted by the Spanish Embassy in Namibia and is part of Rafael Serrallet's world tour sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Santam to the aid of FPS Rudi Bowe

The South African National Trust and Assurance Company Limited (Santam) has recently come to the aid of Flamingo Primary School (FPS)in Walvis Bay with a generous sponsor of N$150 000 to help with the completion of new class rooms at the school. Flamingo Primary School is a Government school that caters for pupils from PrePrimary to Grade 7 with English as the first medium language in the school. The current pupil count is 1200 pupils across all grades from the suburbs of Kuisebmond, Narraville and Walvis Bay Proper. In 2016, four additional class intakes were added to the Grade One intake of pupils by Government thus resulting in the Grade two classes having afternoon classes so that all the Grade One pupils could be accommodated. Currently the Grade Two classes have all been moved to afternoon classes as the Grade One classes are seven classes again this year. The Grade Two pupils having class in the afternoon have on various side factors that emits strain on the pupils, parents and teaching staff as listed below: Pupils start school at 12:00 until 16:30 (resulting in a shortened school day). Teachers have to share classrooms with the Grade One teachers (not being able to set up classroom to full capability for sensory teaching aids). Parents have to arrange for supervision for their children in the

mornings as they are working. Pupils do not partake in mainstream school activities (Assembly, events) as they only attend school as they only attend school after these items are concluded. Parents cannot arrange for extra tuition for pupils that need assistance as they are in school when these functions take place daily. With the Government budgets there is no possibility of the classrooms for t h e G r a d e Tw o pupils to be built in the current school year. It is with the above in mind that the school management and the parents of t h e G r a d e Tw o pupils have come up with a strategy to raise funds to enable the building of seven classrooms. Each classroom will

cost approximately N$200 000 for a complete build. It is against this background that the parents are willing to assist physically with the build to lower costs and complete the classrooms as soon as possible to bring the Grade Two pupils back to normality as these are eight year old children. The needs for the project are as follows: Monetary sponsorship for build and/or, Cement and/or, 6” B l o c k s a n d / o r, Windows and/or, Doors and/or, Electrical supplies and/or, Plumbing supplies and/or, Building Sand and/or, Building p e b b l e s a n d / o r, Cement Mixer to hire for mixing of foundation/plasterin g a n d / o r, P a i n t and/or Miscellaneous items (painting trays, paint

Therefore, we humbly ask for your assistance for the abovementioned needs for our classrooms. The school takes this time and opportunity to thank your company for the interest shown in the well-being of our pupils. With the little mo-

munity would like to thank the Erongo Harambee Trust, MERLUS Seafood Processors, Kuisebmund Social Club, parents and the community that contributed to the construction of the classrooms at the school” the Principal added. Ms Damens mentioned that they would love to finish the construction of the classrooms still this year to accommodate the learners when the school reopens next year.

Therefore plea to the parents of Flamingo Primary School, the business fraternity and other organisations in Walvis Bay and the whole country to help with the completion of the classrooms as the Government cannot do it alone but if we all join hands in helping schools, communities and the country at large as the children and the youth are the future of this nation and Education is the key in today's world.

DEATH NOTICES Theresa a strongwoman in uniform

Over the past few years the Namibia Karate Union (NAKU) has been progressively building a reputation as one of the strongest upcoming countries with regards to karate in Africa. Not only has the Namibian Karate Team and its athletes proved successful; the NAKU referees delegation lead by Namibian Chief Referee, Wikus Oberholtzer, has also received its fair share of success; with many Namibian Referees now holding numerous international level judging qualifications. One such individual in particular is Sensei Theresa Swart of the Swakopmund SKAI Dojo. Theresa Swart started karate at the age of 30 in 2006 and since has been actively involved in Namibian karate. Asa passionate and active student, she achieved her Shodan (1st degree black belt) in 2013 and her Nidan (2nd degree black belt) in 2015. Most recently in 2018 she successfully graded for her Sandan (3rd degree black belt), earning her the official title of 'Sensei'. Other than her role as an Instructor in the Swakopmund SKAI Dojo, Sensei Theresa has also dedicated much of her time and effort as both an organiser and senior official on many National and International level karate events, including this year's AUSC Region 5 Karate Championships which were hosted in Namibia. Sensei Theresa has been assisting as an official since 2006, before ultimately receiving her

National Kata and Kumite Judge C qualifications in 2013. In 2016 she achieved National Kata and Kumite Judge B status before continuing on to Kata Judge A status the following year. In 2018 she became the first Namibian woman to obtain her Regional Kata and Kumite Referee Qualifications as well as the first female Namibian referee to represent her country at an AUSC Region 5 Karate Championship. The same year Sensei Theresa received her National Kata and Kumite Judge A qualifications, making her the most experienced female referee in the country. Most recently, at this year's 2019 African Karate Championships in Gaborone, Botswana; Sensei Theresa once again raised the bar by receiving her UFAK Kata Judge B status, making her the first Namibian woman in history to receive a continental level judge qualification for karate. The Namibia Karate Union is extremely proud of Sensei Theresa Swart and Gert Husselman receiving UFAK Kata Judge A and UFAK Kumite Judge B, we believe that they has set an example and that Sensei Theresa will motivate many more female athletes to embark on this incredibly rewarding journey.

Coastal Junior Cricket Festival Rudi Bowe

The 23rd Edition of the Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Coastal Junior Cricket Festival started and will continue until Friday 23 August. This prestigious cricket festival started in 1996 under the Welwitschia Schools Academy and was called the Interschool Cricket Championships. The event was established by cricket enthusiasts being the late Mr Chucky Dobson who passed away in 2010, Mrs Greta Holst and Mr Ian van der Walt. Trophies were sponsored by Hickory Creek Spur at that stage. During 2000, with the departure of Mr Ian van der Walt, Mr Eugene van der Walt took over and the tournament became known as the Hickory Creek Spur Interschool Cricket tournament. Spur continued their sponsorship until 2009. During 2001 the Spur Group expanded their sponsorship to include medals, trophies, umpires, and scorers' T-shirts. Paradise Beverages made soft drinks available to players. Although cricket at school level was managed by the NSSU, the Namibia Cricket Board started to acknowledge this tournament and assisted by sponsoring match balls with the assistance of ICCACA. The further success of this event can also be laid at the feet of cricket personalities including Otto Mack and John Heynes. These gentlemen organized this festival, as the enrolment of teams and players increased over the years. The tournament became a regular feature on the Namibian School Calendars ever since. This festival also won the International Cricket Council (ICC)'s development awards for best junior cricket promotional program-development initiative during 2003 and 2006. At the end of the 2003 tournament, Greta Holst stepped down as main organiser and handed the reigns over to Otto Mack. For the past three years Mr Mack concentrated on the financial side of the festival while Mr John Heynes took over the organising department. During 2010 the Walvis Bay offices of Spar and FNB Namibia got involved with sponsorships. During 2014 Walvis Bay Salt Refiners took over the spon-

sorship and became the new “partner” of the cricket festival which is now known as the Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Junior Cricket Festival. For many years this event has given the players great pleasure and allowed them to develop their skills and love for the game. The founders, organisers and sponsors overs the years should be delighted that so many Namibian senior cricket players actually played their first ever cricket matches as juniors at this festival. As a matter of interest 11 members of the Namibian U19 squad that participated in the 2016 & 2019 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Tournaments Bangladesh and New Zealand played in this festival. This festival's main focus is on cricket development and the promotion of the game. This year's event is once again dedicated to all junior school cricketers. We believe that all players, coaches, managers and supporters will enjoy this year's event. We trust long – lasting memories will be created; new friendship will be formed and old ones continued on and off the field of play. Very important is the promoting a positive cricket etiquette and spirit of the game. Managing Director of Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Andre Snyman said that Walvis Bay Salt Refiners is proud to be associated with the Coastal Junior Cricket Festival for the 6th consecutive year. Snyman said “Our Company is 56 years old and is the biggest solar sea salt producer in Africa. Over the past few years we have consistently reinvested our profits in the business and in Namibia, and with the completion of our new processing plant our annual production volumes are now nearing 1 million tons of high quality sea salt. Not only is mineral beneficiation one of our key focus areas, but we are also honoured to be involved in the development of young talent through our sponsorship”.
