Walvis Bay is set to get a mega beef storage facility, among others to facilitate beef exports to China. Although not mentioning the Chineseconnection by name, Namibia’s Head of State Dr. Hage Geingob in his State of the Nation Address (SoNa) last week Wednesday said the servicing of 34 hectares of industrial land at Walvis Bay's Ha !Nara Namib Industrial Park will be completed during the current financial year (2018-2019). The size will eventually reach 400 hectares and will be accommodating

both local and international business undertakings. The beef storage facility will cover four hectares and will be the staging area for beef exports to China through the port of Walvis Bay. According to the President in his SoNa, the establishment of this facility is a vital building block in Namibia's quest to opt i m i s e N a m i b i a ’s meat export capacity. The port of Walvis Bay is expected to become the hub of the country’s meat ex-

ports, as opposed to the current pattern of exports taking place through neighbouring ports. Speaking to namib times this week a spokesperson for the Walvis Bay municipality, Anita Kaihiva, confirmed council has allocated land for this industrial park at Farm 58, behind the dune belt. Kaihiva confirmed the Namibia Development Cooperation (NDC) will be responsible for the servicing of the land.

vessel renewal program by seafood giant Nueva Pescanova (Novanam and Lalandii's financial backers) which operates a fleet of 70 fishing vessels in various African countries. Apart from the three Namibian deepsea hake trawlers, Nueva Pescanova also has four shrimp fishing vessels on order from a shipyard in Spain for the renewal of its fleet in Mozambique. That is according to Undercurrent, a credible global seafood and fishing industry news source. The new Namibian vessels will be specially adapted for Namibian ocean conditions and will be driven by high-efficiency and carbon emission friendly engines. It will also include the latest in onboard fish processing equipment and enhanced workand living conditions for seagoing personnel.Novanam is around since 1990. In 2005 Novanam acquired Lalandii as a going concern after this fishing company went under liquidation. Together, these two fishing entities employ 2100 people. Of these, 1800 people are based at LĂźderitz and 300 workers are based on the companies' freezer fleet and the processing plant at Walvis Bay.

Apparent Fraudulent Billing By Legal Practitioners It has been well publicised that a dispute exists between Trustco Insurance Ltd and certain legal firms. Some firms, for reasons only known to them insisted on pursuing an agenda in the media and various social media platforms in spite of the many opportunities Trustco Insurance created to resolve the disputes. A dispute existed between Trustco Insurance and Kruger Van Vuuren & Co, Grobler & Co and Delport Legal Practitioners. While the dispute with Delport Legal Practitioners has been resolved, the dispute with Kruger Van Vuuren and Grobler is ongoing and has not been resolved. An internal investigation was launched by Trustco Insurance into billing practices of contracted law firms with astonishing results and shocking revelations. During the internal investigation, it came to light that there appeared to be accounts submitted by Kruger Van Vuuren & Co for payment when in fact the work for which Trustco was billed had not been performed. It appeared that Trustco Insurance was invoiced for court appearances when the legal practitioner from Kruger Van Vuuren & Co was not at court. In these instances, our members appeared in court without legal representation while Trustco Insurance was invoiced for a court appearance by Kruger Van Vuuren & Co. Kruger Van Vuuren were notified of these discrepancies and still insisted on payment.

Trustco Insurance, acting in the interests of its members, has had no alternative but to lay a criminal complaint of fraud at Nampol for a criminal investigation into these apparently fraudulent activities by members of the Law Society. We shall monitor the progress of the criminal investigation and keep the Namibian public informed. Namfisa, the insurance industry regulator, has also been informed accordingly. It should be highlighted that to date Trustco Insurance has paid in excess of N$160 million in legal fees for legal claims by its members. While the amount in dispute with the legal practitioners is approximately N$1,4 million and may appear insignificant, Trustco Insurance must at all times act in the interests of its members. Trustco and Legal Shield is rooted in the principle of affordable justice for all and therefore must prevent the escalation of costs which would lead to higher and unaffordable premiums for its members. As a result of these billing irregularities, the Head of Trustco's Internal Audit Unit has been additionally tasked with investigating

not only these recent irregularities but previous accounts paid to all legal practitioners in order to determine the extent of these apparently fraudulent activities. Should any further irregularities come to light regarding other members of the Law Society, these will also be referred to Nampol for criminal investigation. Rough & Tough Rally 2018 Floris Steenkamp

With only ten days to go before entries close, those who want to enter their vehicles for the upcoming Rough & Tough Rally, need to do what they have to do. It is the first ever Rough & Tough Rally to be held in Namibia and all the proceeds will be going towards the Cancer Association of Namibia. There is good news for those who cannot participate in the rally: You can tag along as a supporter or back-up for N$1 800 per person per day. This includes four days' meals and three nights camping. Whether you drive the latest edition off-road machine with all the bells and whistles ticked off the accessories list, or whether you borrow your grandfather's “plaasbakkie” – everyone is welcome to join in. For those who have seen the vintage vehicles all dressed up in themes and fitted with all kinds of accessories to enhance its off-road performance: these are the entries for the Rough & Tough Rally that takes place between 24 and 27 May this year. “Our entries already surpassed the 50 % and it looks promising we will have many more entrants by the end of April when entries close”, explained one of the organisers, René Baard recently to namib times, when some of the entry vehicles were put on display at Dunes Mall. Entries from even South Africa and Botswana are awaiting. The Rough & Tough Rally is all about fun, the love for the outdoors and driving those countless back roads which Namibia offers. “You see so much more when you

go off the beaten track”, added Baard. It started out as an idea Phillipie Baard, René's son, had when, some years ago, he bought a vintage Chevy Apache in Damaraland. The vehicle spent its days in the shade of a tree, waiting to be reduced to a heap of scrap by nature's forces. Phillipie Baard has a love for engines, motorcycles and cars. He bought the Apache and restored it to mint condition.“And this is where the idea basically originated”, continued René Baard. Phillipie, apart from his love for engines, cars and motorcycles, also loves to compete in races with it. And it is not that Phillipie Baard can be classified as an amateur when it comes to racing. Not only is he a Namibian quad bike champion, but also a South African champion and participated in the Dakar in Latin America some years ago as well. “Phillipie had an idea to organise some kind of a rally with vintage cars, which he thought should be benefitting the wider public by charity”. The Baard family sprung into action. Between Phillipie, his father Charl, his mother René and his sibling and other people close to him the idea of the Rough & Tough Rally was born. Between 24 and 27 May this year all their hard work will be put to the test. It works like this: Any vehicle older than a 1990 model and not costing more than N$35

000 can enter. The vehicle must be made up with a theme and you can add accessories to your heart's desire to make this vehicle ready for an off-road ride on the back roads. The Rough & Tough Rally starts in the Auas Valley Mall in Windhoek, via the Khomas Hochland to Karibib's Klippenberg Lodge, it then routes towards Usakos and the Erongo mountains, through various back roads of Damaraland to Uis. From there its all the way back via Okombahe to Omaruru. In the course of the rally participants will not only have to show skill behind the steering wheel, but there will also be some quick thinking and decision making to navigate the routes and of course every day there will be a riddle to be solved by each team for extra points. “The Rough & Tough Rally is about fun in the outdoors. It is about enjoying the company of family and friends and to get out of the everyday routine. That is just the way to spend your long weekend”, said René Baard. She invites prospective participants, whether you want to participate in the Rally or go along as a supported and back-up, to phone her today and enter. René can be contacted at 081 127 2991. Remember, it is for a good cause and be sure – the Rough & Tough Rally is going to become an annual event and it will be hosted at other spots around Namibia every year.

“If you don’t want to participate, come along as a supporter or back-up” - organiser René Baard

28 School girls fell pregnant in Walvis Bay in first four months of 2018 Rudi Bowe

Alarming statistics on pregnancies among school girls in Government schools and partly-subsidised private schools in Walvis Bay were released recently during a joint parents meeting held in Kuisebmond at Walvis Bay. Statistics show that in 2017 a total of 39 schoolgirls in Walvis Bay fell pregnant. In the first four months of 2018 this figure already stands at 28. That is according to statistics made public at this meeting which was held by the Erongo Regional Council, in conjunction with the Directorate of Education in Erongo. Some 300 people attended the meeting and agreed it is alarming to notice how many Walvis Bay school girls fall pregnant every year. With 2018 now entering the fifth month, the situation looks alarming and could be a repeat of 2009 when school pregnancies were at an all-time high. The drop-out rate from school as a result of pregnancies were also discussed and it was mentioned as an example that in 2009 alone a total of 1 465 girls left school after finding out they were expecting a child and had to bid farewell to life as a school learner. One of the speakers at the public meeting was well-known educator Miss Heleni Lucas, the Principal of Duinesig Secondary School. Miss Lucas said it is a matter of urgency for program to discourage school pregnancies. Pregnancy amongst learners should be discouraged. Schools need to provide education in this regard. Children need to take accountability for their lives and they must learn the importance of

responsible decisions, said Lucas. “The emphasis must be on the freedom of choice, but that this freedom goes hand in hand with self-

respect”, further stated Lucas. Adding children needed to be educated better to understand the consequences of choices when it

comes to teen pregnancies. Lucas also took a firm stand in favour thereof that in the event where teen pregnancies take place, it should not discourage affected teens to

complete school and pursue a tertiary education. In 2017 a total of 39 teen pregnancies were recorded at the following schools (2018 figure indicated in brackets).

De Duine S.S. – 3 (2); Duinesig C.S. – 12 (6); Flamingo -3 (1); Kuisebmond S.S. – 10 (8); Tutaleni H.S. – 9 (10); Tutaleni P.S. – 1 (1); Kuisebmond P.S. – 1 (0) and Narraville P.S. 0 (0).

First Namibian FIATA Graduates Some 30 logistics professionals attended a FIATA graduation ceremony in Walvis Bay on 12 April 2018. This is the first time that the internationally recognized FIATA course, which focuses on freight logistics standards and management, was presented in Namibia. More than fifty people completed the gruelling course last year in November, with topics ranging from INCO terms, international trade, freight forwarding, supply chain management among others. The course was presented by GMLS and arranged by the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG). Congratulating the students, the CEO of Namport and Chairman of the WBCG, Bisey Uirab said the graduation ticked off another box in the drive to enhance the country's skills and competency. "We are proud to witness the graduation of the first group of FIATA students. This training is a step in the right direction for the local freight forwarders, as human capacity building forms part of the development of the country's logistics industry. We have invested considerable effort and funds to improve our port and logistics infrastructure, but this would be a skewed development, if we did not focus on training people." Uirab said it is imperative that Namibia keeps up with advancements and developments in the global logistics industry. "Foreign trade plays a crucial role in our economy, and it is essential that we continuously improve and build on our efficiencies, skills and infrastructure." said Uirab. He urged the graduates to apply and share the best

practices of the course in their workplaces, expressing the hope that graduates had now gained a better understanding of the port, customs and freight processes. In his address the Chairman of the Walvis Bay Port Users Authority, Riaan Lottering, said FIATA training creates diligence and efficiency. "The training refocuses the importance of compliance with regulations in the freight industry. By following the rules and having a clear understanding of the logistics processes, the industry can make the right decisions faster and without fear. This addresses issues such as corruption, incompetence and delays in the industry. In turn with skilled and knowledgeable logistics professionals, efficiency within the corridors are greatly improved. However, like a formula one racing team, the logistics industry needs to work together to ensure that we maintain the diligence and efficiencies. If one team member breaks the chain, then all is broken." More than 257,000 people work in the

Namibian logistics industry, accounting for about 10% of the country's population. The Port of Walvis Bay has a capacity of 350,000 TEUs and the country has 7,568km of tarred roads, creating the ideal gateway for imports and exports to and from landlocked countries. The logistics industry contributes about 4.7% of the national GDP. One of the graduates, Ben Louw of Customs, said the long hours of study had paid off and urged his fellow graduates to continue building capacity. "Now that you understand the processes and freight standards, Customs will not tolerate exceptions and delays", he jibed, joking that with the graduates' new-found knowledge, their employers should in turn consider improvements to remuneration.

Swakopmund-born Fanilo was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in November 2011 by a paediatrician-Neurologist in Cape Town. His type of autism is called a-typical and complex because it comes with Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not-Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS) which includes Hypotonia (low muscle tone), a lifelong condition alongside with the autism barrier. He has been going to occupational therapy since he was nine months old and fully needs the support of his parents and caretakers in order to develop and reach his full potential. Fanilo's therapy and activity-needs are vast and all these “must-do” exercises and stimulation are a significant monthly expense. His mother describes him as a happy, loving and charming boy. “People who know him well are disarmed by his legendary smiles, his sense of humour and his compassionate heart. Like most boys, Fanilo enjoys playing with toy dinosaurs, dragons, cars and trucks. “Blaze and the Monster Machines” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” count among his favourites, along with a variety of Walt Disney's characters. “The ultimate reward for Fanilo is to watch a movie on DVD on weekends. He can choose what he wants to watch and this is an important window for him into the real life out there. Speaking on the challenges they face, Haller said without doubt that life with a child with ASD is a divine mission. It is a challenging mission, yet so very rewarding. “We believe that God created autistic individuals to teach us the basics of life again. To mention a few: unconditional love, patience, happiness from within, honesty and loyalty. All those amazing characters are often shown to us by children with special needs. We have to be willing to go back to the basics to understand their Neuro-diversity”, added Haller. She continues: “From time to time we have to be able to put ourselves in their shoes to be able to see life through their eyes and to understand their behaviour and mesmerizing world. Autism is not a disease. It is a different way of being. Just different, not less”. With the help Andrea Brand of the Coastal Fit Club, Haller is hoping to raise autism awareness and autism acceptance. There must be an understanding of Fanilo's multiple challenges and in the same vain for other children in Namibia with ASD. Brand will host an hour-long autism awareness Zumba session on 17 April at Coastal Fit Club. Participants are encouraged to wear blue and donate to the Fanilo Haller Autism Trust Campaign. Ignorance of autism is most certainly a bigger challenge than caring for someone with autism. “The number of cases of autism are increasing by the year. Statistics suggest every second birth by the year 2050 could bring forth a human being with some form of autism. “We must remember that autistic children become autistic adults. Is the world geared up to handle these new cases?” she concluded. “However gifted a particular therapist is, an hour a week is just an hour a week. Sessions with therapists are helpful for identifying what parents and educators should be working on and for showing what the child is capable of, but what really counts is what is done every single day, for hours a day, with a child”. - Eileen van der Schyff

Hungry for delicious home-made food? Try Uncle Rudz Café Sharlien Tjambari

It is a couple of minutes before your lunch break and by now all you have is food on your mind, but not just any food, you want a taste of something homemade, something scrumptious that will leave your stomach filled and your soul satisfied. In the Schöne Ecke Building on Moses Garoeb Street, opposite Auas Delta close to Shoprite, you will find a place with a taste of home, that place is Uncle Rudz Cafe. The 60s diner café styled restaurant and take-away opened its doors to the public on 30 March this year. The owner, Rudz Visser – or Uncle Rudz, as everyone calls him – says he started converting the place into a caférestaurant on 2 January this year. “I started with the shop fitting, built the panels, converted my back space into a professional kitchen and bakery and I installed dough rollers, dough mixers and ovens. My kitchen is fully equipped and all cooking and baking equipment is stainless steel.” He owned a lodge before and his personal experience motivated him to open the restaurant in Swakopmund, because he saw there was a need for a smaller traditional food café. “By traditional food I mean an oldfashioned hamburger, a meaty mince or springbok pie, a biltong pizza, not frozen or yesterday's warmed-up food, but freshly baked,” said Uncle Rudz. At first glance, the café gives one a taken-by-surprise feeling with its fresh red-and-white decor, while the smell of the freshly made food makes you all warm inside, and has you drooling as you step in to see what lies beyond Uncle Rudz Café's curtain-covered windows. When you enter the café, you are immediately transported to a 60s diner with modern touches. The tables are covered with bright red and white striped clothes, and topped with grey protea-shaped candle holders and white chairs. On the wall you will find canvas paintings of all three lighthouses in Namibia: Swakopmund's famous landmark, the lighthouse at Pelican Point in Walvis Bay and Lüderitz's Dias Point Lighthouse. The restaurant is cosy and seat only 12 people at a time. “It's not the typical big dining restaurant; I wanted to create a small, café-style place that's friendly and relaxed”, said Uncle Rudz. Uncle Rudz Café is open to the public from 07:20 every morning, Monday to Saturday and 08:00 on Sunday. Closing time depends on how busy the streets are. Uncle Rudz starts his day at 05:15 every day, first getting the hamburger buns or scones or croissants or pizza dough in the oven, then later starts preparing the burgers, and breakfast meals. It is a great place for meals at any time of the day. There

is a warm soup with bread, pap and meat, toast and eggs and fresh-baked pies every morning for the early birds, and comfort food, cooked meals are always ready from 11:00 for the customers looking for a fresh and homemade bite to eat during their lunch break. The café offers Sunday meals as well. “Sundays I have a Sunday roast, leg of lamb, pork leg, three to four vegetables and two salads on a plate. We also have chips which we get complimented on regularly, our chips are the best in town! We change oil on a regular basis and I measure the quality of the oil continuously. I do a chemical test every second day to see whether the oil is still good and safe to use, no compromising on the quality of the food we serve,” Uncle Rudz adds. The restaurant also sells lip-smacking home-made biltong which is made in an old fashion way. He explains that good quality meat is cut into sizeable pieces, matured for 22 hours, spiced and then hung to dry. When it comes to burgers, Uncle Rudz' burgers have a soft, fluffy bun that covers the patty properly, not this the normal soggy burgers we find in shops'; and the patty on the burger is bigger, juicier and yummier. It comes with pickled cucumbers, onions, tomatoes and a very special delicious sauce! Their spaghetti bolognaise is also something they can brag about, as they use a special mince that is cooked in a unique Italian style. All the dough at Uncle Rudz café is matured, fermented and then baked. On special request, he uses low gluten flour. In the short span that the café has been open, his biltong pizzas have already earned him several loyal customers. Uncle Rudz is a Swakopmunder and says he dreamt of opening a cosy café that people enjoy to visit every day. “People tell me my food is delicious and that is all that matters to me,” said Uncle Rudz. The prices are reasonable, but more importantly, the food is delicious! Always ready to talk to his customers and hear what they'd like to eat, Uncle Rudz can often be seen in the front of the café if he isn't busy in the kitchen dreaming up yet another mouth-watering dish. Without a doubt, Uncle Rudz Café is a welcome addition to Swakopmund and is destined to become the talk of the town. Being located conveniently at the first traffic light when you enter Swakopmund (or the last one when you leave town), the café is a quick stop before you hit the road armed with a tasty bite of 'padkos' or yummy biltong, or when you want to relax and enjoy good food and friendly atmosphere.

We would like to take this opportunity to say

Daar is altyd hoop.

WBRC preparing for Vikings Welwitschias vs Valke onslaught The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias will play their first of the SuperSport Rugby Challenge against the Valke to step up from their club rugby in their efforts to qualify for next year's Rugby World Cup.

Rudi Bowe

No-one who saw the first game between Walvis Bay Rugby Club (WBRC) and the Vikings in Swakopmund will need to be told where the Vikings threat to the WBRC lies in Saturday's big game at the Jan Wilken Stadium in Walvis Bay. What happened at the SFC field has been in WBRC's minds for a long time, and it is believed that the club from Walvis Bay wants to rectify the perception which was created then. It hasn't been the perfect build-up for WBRC. Both teams would like to take the points on the table and close the gap between them and Dolphins for a place in the play-offs later in the year. The kick-off time of the game will be at 15:00 If you are heading to the Vineta North Sport field in Swakopmund, on the weekend for Saturday's coastal derby between the Dolphins and Erongo Rugby Academy at 15:00, make sure you are in your seats when the game starts. Both teams are targeting a fast start.

It's easy to understand why that is. In the away derby matches which ERA lost against the Dolphins in their first game. Of course, targeting a fast start is easier said than done, particularly when the opposition is looking at doing the same thing. Dolphins earned themselves a reputation for being the team to beat at the coast. ERA still won less and would like to pull this one off to register points on the log. On KUDU park in Narraville it will be KUDUS that would like to stay on course for the semi-finals in the premier League as they will play against Western Suburbs from Windhoek. KUDUS lost only once this year and would like to keep it like that. The game will start at 15:24 with the second teams and both teams will lock horns at 14:00.

Young Warriors host Botswana on Sunday The Young Warriors are set to play Botswana in the capital this coming Sunday for their second leg round for the 2019 CAF Under-20 AFCON qualifiers and after their first match ended goalless two weeks ago in Gaborone, the team is expected to outperform themselves if they wish to proceed to the next stage of the competition. Young Warriors coach Gerald Gunther says: “After a goal less match in Gaborone, we came back to the drawing board to see what we can improve on. The boys did quite well and there were a few things we needed to work on especially being able to score goals and I think the preparation from the past weeks has enabled us to do just that. Botswana won't be an easy team but I think the boys are ready; the couple of days left will be used to learn how to perfect scoring penalties in case we come to that during the match.” He further adds that the inclusion of twelve youth players in the previous Brave Warriors squad boosted the performance of most of the players because most of the players if not all of

them looked up to the likes of Ronald Ketjijere and playing alongside him was a dream come true to this boys. The match will be played on Sunday at the Sam Nujoma Stadium with kick-off set for 15h00 with free entrance and the public is urged to come in numbers to support the boys. The winner of the Namibia/Botswana tie will proceed to the second round to face Congo in May with the winner of that meeting advancing to the third and final round of the qualifiers were Senegal or Egypt waits in July. The final tournament will be hosted by Niger in 2019 with the four semi-finalists qualifying for the 2019 FIFA U20 World Cup, whose host will be announced next month.

Chrysander Botha The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias are as follows: 1. Desiderius Sethie 2. Obert Nortje 3. AJ de Klerk 4. Mahepisa Tjeriko 5. Ruan Ludick 6. Rohan Kitshoff (Captain) 7. Max Katjijeko 8. Leneve

Epiroc Mining joined Rugby Club Epiroc Mining Namibia joined forces with Dolphin Rugby Club towards the development of rugby, equally important to the youth development of rugby in Swakopmund. The Dolphin Ruby Club Management Committee and players wholeheartedly extend gratitude towards Epiroc Mining Namibia, represented by Raymond Burger, MRS Product Manager in the above photo, for sponsoring the rugby players' gear. The new gear looks great and will certainly give the players enhanced confidence to win more games. Dolphin is on a winning streak with not one game lost this season. They plan to continue the winning streak this coming Saturday against ERA. All supporters of both clubs are invited to watch the anticipated, exciting match on 21 April on Dolphin's home field.

Press Release

The 2018 Commonwealth Games We just arrived from the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in the Gold coast Australia, where Jonas Jonas won the fourth gold medal in boxing and Helalia Johannes the fifth gold medal in athletics (marathon) on the last day of the Games. Ms Helalia Johannes is the first female to ever win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Namibia. The selection criterion for the Gold Coast was high and we received a lot of complaints, we will have to revise the criteria and raise the bar. We had 27 athletes, two gold medals and a new Commonwealth Games Record in Athletics Track and Field, Men's T11 100m by achieving a time of 11.26 on Thursday, 12th April 2018. Namibia stands now at 20 medals - 5 gold medals, 4 silver and 11 bronze at the end of the XXI Commonwealth Games. Congratulations and well done team Namibia. We have launched an official complaint on the specific item, Mr. Ananias Shikongo is competing in T12, but was a group in a T12 event and came fourth in the finals. Longines the official timekeeper of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games acknowledge Mr Shikong's achievement and awarded him with a certified; a donation of $250.00 (AUD) has been handed over to UNICEF, Commonwealth Games Federation's nominated charity at a special function at the Gold Coast. It's absolutely critical for us to collectively invest in our people, the citizens of the land of the brave, secondly, we need to coordinate and harmonised our policies, strategies and programmes at all levels for us to capitalise and get optimal results from our investments. With the limited resources at our disposal for sports, there is no room for duplications, mismanagement, waste, lack of accountability, transparency,

poor governance and last but not least least, coordination and communication. We need to talk with each other, report back to the tax payers and WE SHOULD WALK THE TALK. As the president of the Commonwealth Games Association of Namibia and the Namibia National Olympic Committee - we will engage all the global sporting stakeholders and partners and bring all the needed resources, technologies, expertise and networks in Namibia to transform Namibia into a sporting Nation. We thank the athletes, parents, coaches, managers, clubs, national federation/associations, sports commission, the ministry of sport, youth and national service and the Namibian government for the continuous support towards sports in Namibia. At the end of the current quadrennial, December 2020 the qualification criteria for all the continental and global competitions for 2021 – 2024, will be set and shared with the stakeholders and partners. The next Commonwealth Games are to be held in Birmingham, England from 27 July to 7 August 2022. We are preparing for the following continental and global games: 1. National Youth Games - 2018 2. African Youth Games - Algeria - YOG Qualification (7) 3. Youth Olympic Games - Argentina 4. All African Games 2019 - Morocco (to be confirmed) 5. Olympic Games 2020 - Tokyo

Artistic Gymnastics at the Dome Rudi Bowe

The Gymnastics Federation of Namibia (GFN) will host the 14th African Champion-ships for women and men Artistic Gymnastics at the Dome in Swakopmund from 6 - 13 May 2018. Hosts Namibia, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Angola and South Africa have already confirmed their participation of this event in the coastal town's multifunctional sports complex. The much coveted continental crowns will be contested among Africa's best junior and senior gymnasts in both team and individual competitions. The event, run under the auspices of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), as well as the African Union of Gymnastics (UAG), and will further serve as the official African qualification tournament for the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Argentina later this year. All officials judging at the championships are accredited with FIG, thus giving it an international flair. “It is such a privilege that the gymnasts community of Africa entrusted Namibia to organize and host this prestigious event”, said GFN spokesperson Britt Adonis. “The Namibian Federation is very fortunate to have a

world-class facility like The Dome in Swakopmund, at their disposal for this event. All competitions will take place at this facility and it is sure to be an exhilarating event”, Adonis underlined. Dave Hammond, Marketing Manager of the Dome stated: “We look forward to welcoming Africa's gymnastic elite to the Dome. We are confident, that this will be a great tournament, not only in Namibia, but for the entire African continent.” Gymnastics Namibia received a generous sponsorship from Chinese company Tiashan ahead of the tournament. The gymnastics manufacturer is providing two full sets of FIGapproved equipment, without which the event would not have been possible. Other sponsors and stakeholders include The Dome Swakopmund, Paratus Telecom and Namibian Breweries. The Namibian contingent who will be competing at the event will be announced in due course.

FNB Namibia support Karate Rudi Bowe

First National Bank of Namibia, through their Swakopmund branch, has recently handed out a sponsorship to the amount of N$ 25 000 to the Shotokan Karate Academy International (SKAI) Swakopmund Dojo's, in support of their Annual National Open Karate Tournament in Swakopmund. This was the fourth year the bank has been a part of this event. The Manager for Sponsorships and Donations at FNB Namibia, Gordon Pokolo said: “We are proud to play an instrumental role in this great sport code. Karate not only assists self-defence, but also contributes towards fitness, energy and vitality. It is also a sport code which instils success and family values and promotes respect and courtesy. It teaches a student to become more disciplined and patient within themselves, and Karate encourages humility above ego. Furthermore, it builds character, as karate is an individual activity where participants enhance their skills, become fitter, stronger and more coordinated week-after-week, while their self-confidence grows.” The Owner of the SKAI Dojo in Swakopmund, Valdemar Swart, added that because of this years' significant sponsorship, the under privileged athletes from the Swakopmund area could also be accommodated. “The funds assisted the Dojo in securing the venue, the training facility for preparatory purposes as well medical assistance on the day, which all formed a big part of the successful event. The funds stretch even further and contribute towards the development of the Dojo while promoting self-defence training for the community in and around Swakopmund.”

Valdemar thanked First National Bank for their commitment and investment in the development of the Namibian people through the wonderful sport of karate. “First National Bank really lives their brand mantra of “How can we help you?”
