Visit the Erongo Business and Unlicensed driver knocks over child Tourism Expo in Walvis Bay Isaac Chikosi

An18-year-old faces a charge of reckless and negligent driving at Henties Bay, after he lost control of a vehicle and knocked over a four year old boy earlier this week. To make matters worse, the driver does not have a driving license and faces an additional charge of failure to produce a driving license upon request from an officer of the law. Police in Henties Bay arrested the man on the scene of the accident which took part in Henties Bay's Omdel suburb. According to police reports the pre-schooler was standing with his bicycle on the roadside when the car hit him. The little boy sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Swakopmund state hospital for medical treatment. The Erongo Business and Tourism Expo is in full swing. The Expo is presented at the Walvis Bay civic centre where products and services are on display from exhibitors from across Namibia and also from outside the country’s borders. The Expo was officially opened on Wednesday by the Minister of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development, Tjikera Tweya (MP). The Erongo Business and Tourism Expo is an event that can be enjoyed by the entire family. Apart from the exhibitions, delicious food and beverages are offered for sale, there is a kids action play area and many opportunities to sample products and services. Make sure not to miss this year’s Expo. The Expo concludes tomorrow (Saturday 2 November). Hake fleet returns to the fishing grounds

This vehicle caught fire in 1st Street East in Walvis Bay on Wednesday. It is reported the vehicle was with a local car dealer for repairs when it caught fire during a test drive. The Walvis Bay fire brigade assisted at the scene of the fire.

The hake season is open again, after the compulsory closed month of October expired at one minute past midnight this morning (00:01, 1 November ). Vessels are returning to sea after a month alongside. The compulsory closure of the hake season every year is to allow for hake spawning to take place unhindered. It also allows fish factories and vessel owners time to conduct repairs and maintenance to vessels, fishing gear and land based processing facilities. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources reminded through its Inspectorate this week that the area between Pelican Point and Sandwich Harbour would be closed between 1 January and 31 March 2020 for angling. The closure of the area is a conservation measure to protect cob resources.

BUCO Walvis Bay store opening

Staff at Buco’s new Walvis Bay branch are energetic and motivated. Several Walvis Bay service providers were mentioned by name: Walcon Construction, M&M Signs, Two Oaks Custom Furniture and Spot-On Catering. A special word of thanks also went to Buco’s respective suppliers (Fltr): Johan van den Berg, the regional operations manager for Buco in Namibia, the Deputy Mayor of Walvis Bay Clr Penelope Martin and Mr Steve du Toit, th e CEO of Buco at the unveiling of the plaque

Buco saw the opening of its new store in Walvis Bay on 24 October. The Deputy Mayor of Walvis Bay, Clr Penelope Martin, unveiled the plaque at the entrance of the shop. At the opening event the CEO of Buco, Mr Steve du Toit, said the company’s 14year-old footprint is growing in Namibia. The first Buco store was established in Windhoek, followed by a store at Ongwediva, the third store in Walvis Bay central and the new branch in Walvis Bay, effectively the fourth. Du Toit explained like a three-legged potjie, Buco bases its success on three legs: its staff, its suppliers and its customers. Pictures herewith show staff, suppliers and clients invited to the opening.

E-RED sees drop in consumption rate Sharlien Tjambari Erongo RED experiences a reduction in electricity consumption by both its industrial- and residential consumers. The regional electricity distributor attributes this lower demand to reduced industrial activities, slow production and halts at the major mines and residential consumers that have to cut household expenses across the board. The Chairman of Erongo RED's board of directors, Mrs Zoe Nambahu, says the regional electricity distributor took into consideration the current economic climate in Erongo Region when it made the decision to keep electricity tariffs unchanged. Nambahu made these remarks at a recent shareholder's meeting of Erongo RED. “Taking this into account and in support of our business and residential customers in the region, the company did not increase its tariff for this current financial year, Nambahu is quoted.

Modified Single Buyer Model brings radical change to electricity supply sector

Sharlien Tjambari The Chairman of the board of directors of Erongo RED, Mrs. Zoe Nambahu, recently at a shareholders conference took the opportunity to explain to delegates at the meeting the implications the Modified Single Buyer Model (MSB) has for Namibia's electricity supply sector. Two arrested for rape of minors Isaac Chikosi Five children are believed to have been the victims of two separate sexual abuse incidents at the coast this week. In both incidents the Namibian Police made arrests. A 26-year-old teacher of an afterschool care centre in Swakopmund was arrested this week after an eleven year old boy reported this particular teacher

perfor-med sexual acts with him at more than one occasion between the end of last year and 24 October this year. At the same time a 32year-old man, named Petrus Geiseb, was

This lovely, Christian lady then would not allow me to share my gift, but promptly presented Petro Rabe with a CD and DVD of her own!! This was, indeed, a “kalos” gesture - of goodness and beauty. The Swakopmund teacher would take the boy to an empty room and forced the boy to sexually stimulate him. The issue came to light when the boy

reported the matter to another teacher who immediately notified his parents. The incident was reported to the Police without delay. With regard to the

Walvis Bay incident, Geiseb between April and September this year lured his young girl victims to his room at a house in Kuisebmond's Sitrien Street. He would lure

them with sweets. He would show them pornographic material and allegedly then inserted his fingers in their private parts. These victims are respectively 8, 9 and 10 years of age.

Sustainability Centre opens in Swakopmund Sharlien Tjambari An Urban Sustainability Centre was launched on 22 October by the Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust (NaDEET) in Swakopmund. The Centre aims to educate the Namibian public on recycling and waste management and how to preserve critical resources like water. Panduleni Haindongo, an educator at the Centre explains as follows: “Here you can learn what resources we have and how you can preserve them. We also promote recycling and waste reduction”. The Centre offers a variety of programs to the public on sustainability. Tourists, learners and teachers will also find the Centre a very interesting and helpful resource. In fact tourists and tour operators have been visiting the Centre since its opening. The Secretary-General of Namibia's National Commission to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Roderick April, explained the Centre should serve as a prototype of what they want to see should happen across Namibia. April further said, Namibia as an arid country is confronted with many sustainability challenges, which include drought, energy, water security, pollution, sanitation, dumping of waste, flocking of tourists to Swakopmund, urbanisation and land. With the issue of people searching for land, other sustainability challenges come with it. Hence, people need to have the knowledge, skills and values to ensure that a future is secured and that our valuable resources are not ruined. NaDEET aspires for Namibians to participate in finding viable solutions to their local and national environmental issues to create a healthy and sustainable future for all. NaDEET aims at providing a non-profit environmental education service for all, especially from underprivileged areas of Namibia, based in the beauty and magic of the Namib Desert. Furthermore, NaDEET aims at building capacity and know-how at all levels of the environmental education sector: focused on addressing relevant environmental issues, supporting the Namibian school curricula and practicing hands-on, experiential learning and learner-centred educational methods; and to engage in education, advocacy and awareness of the critical role of sustainable living in a finite semi- arid environment. “NaDEET was awarded the Japan-UNESCO ESD prize in 2018 for their excellent hands-on work in teaching and learning on the Namib Rand. This prize has shown that transformation begins within and that with hard work and creativity, Namibia has knowledge and practice to share with the world”, said April. The centre is open to the general public every day between 09:00 and 16:30 and is located on Libertina Amathila Avenue.

PRESS RELEASE

CIF Hosts First Annual Construction Conference On 14 and 15 November 2019, the Construction Industries Federation (CIF) is hosting its first Annual Construction Conference, which is to take place at the Safari Hotel and Conference Centre. The purpose of the conference is to bring together the members of the CIF and key private and public sector stakeholders to discuss the current state of the industry and to highlight the opportunities for the building and construction sector, despite the current economic environment Namibia finds itself in. Hosting this conference is possible due the commitment and support provided by

respective sponsors, including First National Bank, Nexus Group Holdings, Saint-

Gobain, Bank Windhoek, Peralin Paints, Namibia Construction, Team Namibia, Ohlt-

haver & List, Namibia Media Holdings and Cirrus Capital, Talisman Hire, and Simonis

Storm. High-level speakers for the conference have been confirmed and include Hon Mr Sankwasa James Sankwasa, deputy minister of the Ministry of Works and Transport. In addition, executive directors or senior officials of key government ministries will present and discuss future opportunities for infrastructure development within their respective portfolios. These include the energy sector, health and social services, agriculture and water, and education, as well as rural and urban development, and low cost housing. As many businesses are also based in the north of Namibia, the CIF invited the chairperson of the NCCI Ongwediva, Mr Ben Hauwanga, to open the

conference. Bärbel Kirchner, consulting general manager of the CIF says: We are absolutely delighted to have received this kind of support from our sponsors as well as having the commitment from the respective speakers. It is a busy time of the year, but it shows what can be achieved when reaching out to others, who would like to see our industry thrive and move forward, in order for us to once again effectively and increasingly contribute to Namibia's sustainable economic development. Although there are a multitude of issues that affect the industry, a one and a half day conference, necessitates the focus on only the key issues that impact the profitability of

businesses in the construction sector. According to the CIF, the conference was scheduled to take place alongside the CIF's AGM which normally takes place in the final quarter of the year. The timing was also considered suitable in order to once again highlight the importance of supporting local businesses, and contractors. But, most importantly, the CIF states that it important to secure maximum awareness of the construction sector and its potential to contribute to future economic growth, especially at a time when government authorities are now engaged with their budgeting for the next financial year. Deutsche Interessengemeinschaft Liebe deutschsprachige Gemeinschaft in Namibia, Am 7.

Golf news from Walvis

Last weekend the PISCS/FOX DESIGNS monthly medal drew a good field of 36 players and again there was some good and some not so good golf played. Stanley Gawanab won the best gross on the day with a good 73 while Kevin de Reuck won the best net with a jolly fine 71. The 'A' division best net was won by Tiennie de Wet on 78 while the 'b' division was won by Justine Grobler on 72. Chairman Carlos de Gouveia won the 'C' division of 74. We have now also incorporated a Stableford competition on the same day as the medal and this was won by Poch Alchin on 36 points while Jonas Niilenge was second on 34 points. Two clubs were recorded by Jaco Greef and Emile Vilbert. The jackpot was not won. The guy who made good use of his green fees for the day was Chris Bothma, no score will be mentioned other than to say it was a good innings if he batted first. The AIR NAMIBIA RACE TO CAPE TOWN is getting down to the last few. Thanks to Wouter van Wijk for the upkeep of the leader board, and indeed thanks to AIR NAMIBIA for the sponsorship. Rugby continues to play havoc with our golf programme but it is the last of it this weekend. As a result of this and because we are hosting about 50 juniors some of whom have to play 36 holes on Saturday there is NO official golf this weekend. Those that would like to play can fall in after the juniors have started the second 18 holes. The juniors will tee off from 7h00. The competition and sponsor for this weekend has been shifted. There will be a spit braai on Saturday and the catering committee are catering for 80 including the juniors, cost is 70 bucks and will be on a first come first served basis.

Chef Hannes will be the NAKED CHEF for the day haha. Obviously all are welcome to watch the RWC final at the club. I believe the ALL Black supporters will be washing cars and cutting the lawn on Saturday morning, they might however feel better if they can beat the Welshies on Friday but woe be me if the drop that one was well. Not sure if the Western Cape [and dare I say some of Narraville will be able to handle that depression. The committee have been on about repairing divots and pitch marks. Please support them here and repair the marks even if they are not yours. Also please remember to rake the bunkers; it is just good course etiquette. The club has installed the PAY TODAY facility for all sales and green fees. Please make use of it as it makes the life of the manager a bit easier. The happy JOKER continues to evade capture and the jackpot was at 24 500 last week where Oom Pikkie Champion had a chance to win, but alas it was not to be. On the point of Oom Pikker, baie geluk met oom se verjaarsdag as ook Tannie Pikkie, altwee het 80 geword in die week. Baie sterkte aan a twee van julle.
