Medical emergency fraternity remembers Alfred Ward one year after tragic plane crash Erwin Leuschner 20 individuals from the emergency medical fraternity in Swakopmund gathered at the gravesite of the former E-Med paramedic Alfred John Ward at the Swakopmund cemetery on Tuesday, to mark approximately one year to the day he died in a plane crash at Cape Town during a medical emergency flight. Ward, the two pilots of the plane, an 80 year old patient and his daughter died when their plane went down on 16 August 2015 at Maastricht wine farm near Cape Town whilst on final approach for Cape Town International Airport. “What you guys do on a daily basis is not just a job. It is a calling and you have all been selected to save lives,” said Johnny Beukes, reverend at the Evangelical Mission Church, during the gathering on Tuesday. He reminded paramedics their profession is not always easy. “We have gathered here to remember a former colleague. His time had come, but your time is not yet here and you are still needed. You don't get a lot of people that run into the house, when everybody else runs out,” he said. The 24-year-old Ward accompanied on the illfated plane the gravely ill Gabriel le Roux (80) from Oranejmund, his daughter Charmaine Koortzen (49) and pilots Steven Naude (53) and Amoré Espag (23). There were no survivors.

New motorised wheelchair for Benita after theft of her first wheelchair Piquet Jacobs Benita Johannes, a Grade 11 learner at Duinesig Secondary School, was given another electric scooter on Friday after the one she received in 2015 from D & M Rail Construction (Pty) Ltd, was stolen in October 2015. Johannes lost her limbs in a train accident on 21 June 2013; she had her left arm and leg amputated and also lost her right foot. Yet, against all odds, she survived the ordeal and made a remarkable recovery after months of hospitalization. Johannes returned to school in 2014, being dependent on others to move her around in a regular wheelchair. The young girl is seen as an inspiration to her peers; she has remained optimistic and positive as she still dreams of finishing school and becoming a doctor. She received the electric scooter in May 2015 which enabled her to go to school on her own and also improved her mobility at school, only to have the scooter stolen 6months later by a family member. The family member took the scooter to Swakopmund under the impression that it was going for repairs, but it was never returned, instead the scooter was taken apart and the parts sold. This set her back again to using a regular wheelchair.
D & M Rail Construction (Pty) Ltd took it upon themselves to once again lend a helping hand to give Johannes some of her independence back. D & M representative, Martinus Mengela, added that the company with continuously keep contact with Johannes's progress and needs, and will occasionally give their support by buying electricity and groceries. Johannes was overjoyed saying, “I am very happy, for the second time you have helped me. Thank you so much. The last few months were difficult in my normal wheelchair, I had no privacy and always needed assistance, but now I can move around on my own again.” Caption: Benita Johannes pictured with Duinesig Head of Department, Paul Gerhard Gertze; Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Julieta Kavetuna; Chairperson of Erongo Regional Council, Hafeni Ndemula; her assistant, John Harris; D&M Representative, Martinus Mengela; her mother, Helma Namupala.
Emergency exercise at police station near Afrodite Beach
Transport company, Extreme Customs Clearing Services (Pty) (XCCS), carried out an emergency exercise on Thursday, to measure the company's level of preparedness to deal with any emergency situation that might arise during operations. An emergency situation was simulated whereby a vehicle collided with a petrol tanker of the company. Various emergency services participated in the exercise that was held near the police station at Afrodite Beach. The scene was cordoned off to prevent access by bystanders, medical rescue personnel tended to three simulated injuries, fire teams responded to a simulated fire that started on the truck's brake system and diesel spilled from the damaged tanker was simulated. The scene, although only fictional but important for training lured interest from the public and quite some calls to the newspaper's office.

Rhino poaching bail hearing greeted by heated protest Erwin Leuschner Under heavy protest from the public the formal bail application of seven alleged Rhino poachers commenced on Tuesday this week in the magistrates court at Omaruru. The case was postponed to August 29 for the case to continue. The accused remain in custody. More than 80 members of the public had gathered at the Magistrates Court in Omaruru on Tuesday morning where they protested against the granting of bail for seven suspects in a rhino poaching incident stemming from March this year. They also handed over a petition to control prosecutor Louis Chegune in which they voice their “fear that the accused may even continue with rhino poaching.” The suspects were apprehended after a successful operation between the Namibian Police and the Omaruru District Watch (ODW). The accused were allegedly trying to kill a white rhino cow on a lodge near Omaruru in March this year and shot the animal. Luckily the animal managed to escape. Two days later the poachers returned to finish off the cow, but they found a white rhino bull and instead shot him. The bull was hit between the shoulder and the neck and could also, miraculously, manage to escape. Together with a vet and the police's resources protection unit the ODW tracked the wounded animal as well as the poachers. The alleged shooter was found on the same day and allegedly had a rifle as well as knives and an axe, to de-horn a rhino, in his possession. More arrests followed shortly after the incident with a total of seven suspects being behind bars to date. During their first appearance the accused were denied bail. They subsequently made a formal bail application, which commenced this week and ran until Wednesday. Magistrate Abel Sankwasa postponed the case to 29 August for the proceedings to continue. A total of three days has been set down for the continuation of the application. Up until their next appearance Naftal Tjiveze (44), Jazungua Karunga (34), Thomas Ungula (32), Johannes Kuutondokwa, Frans Tjirondero (32), Meingo Simon (36) and Oiva Nekondjo will remain in custody. They face charges of unlawful hunting of protected game, the illegal possession of a firearm and trespassing. A surprising amount of members of the public had gathered at the court on Wednesday where they protested against the granting of bail. They also handed over a petition signed by “concerned community members.” They argue that bail should be denied as rhinos are an endangered species and face extinction; they are a national treasure and a few individuals try to enrich themselves at the expense of the Namibian nation; we fear that the accused may flee the country if granted bail and might not return to stand trial.

Reiterverein provides part of its turf for expansion of SPCA premises The Swakopmund Town Council has extended the lease agreement with the riding stables Reiterverein Swakopmund (RVS) located on the southern border of the town. A small portion of the area will in future be utilised by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals (SPCA) to expand their operations. Currently the Reiterverein Swakopmund is leasing two large portions of land from Town Council. According to the Agenda of the recent meeting the lease portions measure about 16 000 m² and 22 500 m² respectively. For the past 30 years the club has been leasing the large portion while the smaller piece became a part of the club a few years ago. On the latter piece the RVS erected an impressive events track and beautified the area. The track was one of the first in the in the country. During the recent meeting Town Council approved to extend the lease agreement for both areas up until October 2020. It was also decided that an area measuring 1 000 m², forming part of the 22 500 m² portion which is located adjacent to the SPCA, will be in future be leased to the SPCA. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals had applied to Council for more land at the beginning of the year to expand its operations and erect new kennels. Although the request for the extension of the lease agreement was discussed at the meeting, another concerning aspect brought up by the RVS recently was not mentioned at all. In a letter sent to the Municipality of Swakopmund in May this year by RVS Vice-Chairperson Geesche Gilchrest she requests Council to make the Windhoeker Street, running between the RVS and the SPCA, “safe.” “Currently cars race past and nearly knocked over a kid trying to catch her dog that just came out of the SPCA, or a horse that got away and nearly ran to town. The newest problem added to this is the prostitution going on at night on our riding grounds,” she states in the letter. As a solution to the problem the Vice-Chairperson requests Council to have the area declared as a “recreational area”, after which the street could be closed for public traffic by means of the erection of a wooden fence between the SPCA and the RVS. “Would you kindly relook at my various attempts in your Municipal file, in which we applied for this, before something fatal happens,” the letter states. This point was not discussed at the meeting and remains a bone of contention as in the past the wide road has indeed become a race ground.

School of Excellence observes World Lion Day The students of the Swakopmund School of Excellence were all transformed into lions of sort on Thursday, 11 August, World Lion Day. Every class had special activities, including the making of lion masks. The Grade 2 Class also wore specially printed t-shirts to celebrate the day. They had been inspired earlier by a visit from the organisation, Africats, who gave them an overview of the different cat species, and focussed on the importance of conservation of these wonderful natural assets. Pilot admits falling asleep at her aircraft's controls The pilot who recently executed an emergency landing with a Cessna 210 (V5-JET) owned by Scenic Air, reportedly admitted to air accident investigators she fell asleep behind the controls leading to this latest air incident. The pilot was identified as Shannon Duff. Max Siyanga This article is not clear as to where the investigators got the answers. How did you get this info? the aircraft lifted and only then landing gear deployed. How do you conclude that she slept and can really one do emergency landing because of sleeping? Cayleen Lee Hoole These pilots work hectic hours and we all make innocent mistakes. She landed safely and wasn't hurt. Sure it would have been a different story had there been passengers, meaning Miss Duff would not have fallen asleep. Was this article and photo approved? Valerie Botha No it wasn't approved and report not even issued by authority before this article was published.. very disrespectful. Cayleen Lee Hoole namib times you should be ashamed. Jeanne De Villiers Koch You are quite right Cayleen, they work very long hours, and besides that, many things can happen to the human body at high altitudes. I am glad she is safe, it could have been a tragedy so easily. Mary Lila-Marichen Sam Nkalamba So Ms Koch decided to disappear from a raw conversation she started, i hope she learned a lesson. Never tag anyone you don't know and judge their opinions or expressions. Especially if you no expert yourself in what is being shared, let those who knows anything about flights answer our questions. Andries J-p du Plessis A C210 only need 1 pilot and everybody make mistakes. What about people falling asleep in a car? Isn't that more serious? Jeanne De Villiers Koch Well said. Frank Pienaar Very happy she is ok to tell her boss the truth. If she had not made it out the boss would never have known. Now at least she can give her side of the 911. Thank goodness. John John Now did the aircraft run out of fuel or what made the engine stop and how is the sleeping connected to the to engine failure ? Nicola Nicki Anthea April She is only human. Why all the judgement? Thank God she is fine!!! Eldina Gaweses I am happy that no body was hurt that's all that matters we all make mistakes ... Cameron 'Urs Truly' Pieterse Where was the co pilot? Jeanne De Villiers Koch Idiot.... Cameron 'Urs Truly' Pieterse Im not an expert so i asume a co pilot wouldve kept her awake, thats why i asked where was the co pilot? No need to be rude nd call people idiots. Jeanne De Villiers Koch Empty cans Mary, empty cans. Jeanne De Villiers Koch Cameron, if you ask where was the co-pilot, you make the statement that there was supposed to be a co-pilot. If you do not know, than rather ask, "is there not supposed to be a co-pilot? Or do the small air-craft not make use of co-pilots? " Apologies for my harsh comment. Mary Lila-Marichen Sam Nkalamba What the hell..? N ya where was the co- pilot? Johann van Niekerk You see. Don't judge to early in life. These type of flights don't need a co-pilot. There is your answer. Mary Lila-Marichen Sam Nkalamba And they surely dont need sleepy heads on duty either Johann van Niekerk. Johann van Niekerk Fully fully agree with you Mary. Just saying . Like you didn't know that they only operate 1 crew we don't always know the facts of the news paper. Mary Lila-Marichen Sam Nkalamba Yes i didn't know now i do. But the story is not making sense. Landing gear, the bang and the falling asleep? Danny Beukes Happy she is ok. Amai Adrienne-Jamie I hope she never flies commercial seriously risking lives. Johann van Niekerk I would fly with her anytime. Cayleen Lee Hoole This article is no testament to Miss Duffs flying capabilities and namib times should be sued. The Namibian fishing sector earned an estimated N$10 billion in revenues from the landings of 550 000 metric tons of fish in the 2014/15 fishing year. In addition the industry provided 15 000 direct jobs over the same period and sustained a further 45 000 indirect jobs in supplies to fishing vessels, stevedoring activities, logistics and other related marketing and trade activities. Simultaneously, Government revenues from taxes, levies and tariffs also increased. Neil Hivirikejee Does Katti have this information? He want to start phosphate mining. Erwin Leuschner Just after Namibia's Independence in 1990 the once operational Deblin Mine on the outskirts of Swakopmund was abandoned. What was left behind? An environmental mess. WALVIS BAY SWAPO extends helping hand to elderly and needy Piquet Jacobs
The Narraville Clinic received a small facelift when the SWAPO Nangolo Mbumba Branch held a blanket drive on Saturday, 13 August. The clinic has been under much criticism lately, regarding the condition of the building as well as the service the patients, especially the elderly, receive. The branch and its members, along with Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Julieta Kavetuna, Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Derek Klazen and Namibian Ambassador to Tanzania Theresia Samaria took the time to fix up the building during their visit. They also, with the help of volunteers and learners from Narraville Primary School and De Duine Secondary School, did a clean-up of the Narraville suburb, after which they handed blankets over to 60 elderly and needy residents of Narraville. The day was a huge success.

Free eye tests for Grade 1’s at Swakopmund schools Lions Club project Erwin Leuschner Once again the Lions Club in Swakopmund will do free eye tests for all Grade 1 learners at all schools in Swakopmund. This year's edition of the “Swakop Sight Project” kicked off yesterday with a total of 70 Grade 1 learners at three different schools having their eyes tested. The tests will be done on a total of 1 300 Grade 1 learners at eleven schools in Swakopmund. The Swakop Sight Project is organised annually and is done under the leadership of three local optometrists. The Grade 1 learners undergo basic eye tests and should a child show any difficulty reading or have sight problems, a recommendation is then made to the parents. “Should a learner require glasses, we make an appropriate recommendation. If parents cannot afford glasses, they can apply to the Lions Club for funding,” said Jörn von Wenzel to namib times. Von Wenzel yesterday did eye tests at three different schools. Of the 70 learners tested 16 children had sight problems. The first schools which were visited were the Swakopmund Christian Academy, The School of Excellence and the Private School Swakopmund. The project runs up until October and will continue after the school holidays.

Bank Windhoek continues to upskill Entrepreneurs
(Fltr) Tahafeni Haikondja, Lazarus Araeb, Sebulon Nganjone, Wilfried Nauseb, Derick Vermeulen (Facilitator from Adonai Trust), Andreas Kashikuka, Tangeni Musheko, Helena Malongi, Lena Gaoses and Alex Visser (Sales Manager Bank Windhoek Swakopmund Branch) Bank Windhoek and the Town Council of Swakopmund have entered into a partnership whereby the Bank will provide training to prospective entrepreneurs as well as established informal traders. Subsequent to initial training done earlier this year by Bank Windhoek, some of the participants were selected to undergo more intensive training, where the participants are put through a business simulation exercise for four days. Participants were amongst others equipped with knowledge of how the basic business cycle works, marketing, business planning, negotiation and how to build strong relationships. In this intensive course, which took place last week, 16 participants started the training, but eventually eight completed the training. After the training, participants will join a Sustainability Group where they can share their successes and challenges. “Bank Windhoek will continue to create opportunities for those entrepreneurs that want to learn more and increase their chances of success. However, it is up to each individual to recognize the opportunity and then to grab those opportunities. Bank Windhoek will also continue to seek partnerships with the various towns, and if there are town councils interested in this partnership, they can contact us anytime, said Riaan van Rooyen, Head of Corporate Affairs, Strategy and Sustainability at Bank Windhoek.

!Nara Primary School students: Exploring Mars with Dr Japie van Zyl Dr Japie van Zyl, Associate Director: Project Formulation and Strategy at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) took time off his busy schedule to talk live via skype to !Nara Primary School science students about his work at NASA and their company's interest in the Mars missions. It was 12 o'clock midnight in California and 8 o' clock in the morning here in Namibia. This initiative was arranged by Mrs Martella Diederiks and Mr Buddy Visagie, science teacher at !Nara Primary, to spark interest in science and technology. An interesting fact was the many similarities between Mars and the Namib Desert. Dr Van Zyl told the children that hopefully by the time that he retires, some of these young Namibians might be working at NASA to take over the search for life on other planets. The Opuwo boy, who grew up gazing at the heavens motivated the students to study hard and that nothing is impossible no matter where you come from or your circumstances.

NMC raises awareness about mental health NMC, through its I. See. U. Campaign is raising awareness about the realities of mental health in Namibia. Our aim is not only to improve the mental health of our members, but also raises awareness about the mental health needs of all people in the country. Sadly, the lack of recognition of mental health needs is a national and global problem. Statistics from the Ministry of Health and Social Services show that 8 527 patients were treated for mental illnesses at various health facilities countrywide in 2015, compared to 9 257 the previous year. Results from the 2013 Global School-based Health Survey, which in Namibia involved over 4 500 learners in Grades 7-12, also showed that one in five learners considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months. Globally, suicide was the second leading cause of death amongst persons aged 15-29 in 2012. There is a saying that there is no health without mental health. And yet, all too often mental health needs are under-recognised and under-treated, with many people reluctant to speak out about mental health challenges. The stigma associated with mental health can make people feel that they are not “trying hard enough to deal with daily life challenges or even lead to accusations of witchcraft. However, a mental health condition is as valid a healthcare problem as a broken arm or a fever. Whilst you cannot always see the impact of a mental health condition in the same way that you can see a broken arm or measure the temperature of a fever, a mental health condition has just as much validity as a physical healthcare problem. Mental illness is thought to be caused by a variety of genetic and environmental factors. For example, mental illness is more common in people whose blood relatives also have a mental illness as certain genes may increase the risk of developing mental illness. Exposure to environmental stressors, inflammatory conditions, toxins, alcohol or drugs while in the womb is also linked to mental illness. Whether it is autism, schizophrenia, postnatal depression, anxiety disorder or another mental health condition, at NMC we know that mental health is a vital part of overall health. Our role is to support our members to access the healthcare services they need. This may be through medication, therapy or any other intervention. What is crucial is that we are able to support our members to recognise the healthcare needs they have. There is another saying – a healthy body means a healthy mind, but at NMC we also believe that a healthy mind means a healthy body. Our role is to back up the lives of our members and in 2016 our aim is to highlight the importance of the mental health of our members as well as their physical health. We will also host an event on 28September 2016 at the Windhoek Golf Club the aim is to shed more light on mental wellness. Health professionals in various disciplines will lead discussions on working, living and growing up with depression. There will also be a number of wellness exhibitions to help with practical and alternative approaches to dealing with and overcoming mental wellness. Tickets for the presentations and health professionals will be N$100 for the morning session, N$50 for the afternoon session, or N$130 for the full day while the exhibitors' fee would be N$250. Tickets are available online at www.eventstoday.com.na or at the Biltong Shop in Maerua Mall, and at Warehouse Theatre on Tal street. All the proceeds will go to the Autism Association of Namibia. Let's support this cause and encourage mental wellness at home, in our schools and work places. Ultimately, we need to see ourselves, and each other, in the NMC I See U Campaign.

Darüber hinaus macht es richtig Spaß – was will man mehr!

IT'S ABOUT THE JOURNEY Mercedes-Benz SUVs: The best SUVs for every terrain 2015 was 'The Year of the SUV' for MercedesBenz as they introduced new models to their already extensive SUV range. This refreshed SUV range includes four all-new additions to the extensive SUV range from Mercedes-Benz - the sporty GLA, the luxurious GLC, the stylish GLC Coupé and the sexy GLE Coupé - and the new-generation GLE and GLS model ranges. To showcase these vehicles on South African terrain, Mercedes-Benz SA infused an extended campaign with local content, through film for social platforms. In each episode, an unlikely duo travels to a remote corner of southern Africa in one of the remarkable new Mercedes-Benz SUVs. The all-new GLE Coupé takes songbird Lira and comedian Loyiso Gola to northern KwaZuluNatal where they beautifully re-imagine a traditional Zulu song. In Namibia, world-renowned fashion designer Craig Jacobs and actress Lerato Kganyago, driving in luxury in their GLC, draw inspiration from the dunes of the Namib Desert to create bespoke African couture. Cricket legend Mark Boucher and chef extraordinaire Marthinus Ferreira journey to the Wild Coast in the GLE to prepare a signature three-course meal. And when the legendary G Class brings photographer Adrian Steirn and lion whisperer Kevin Richardson together, they capture what could, sadly be the future of our continent's magnificent wild lions. Their haunting image has been featured in media the world over. In this week's episode, iconic trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and MiCasa front-man J'Something talk the language of music as they drive along the Garden Route in the new GLS. Their task is to record an original song, which results in "Heaven in You" with its haunting lyrics that tell of Hugh's love for his homeland despite his exile during the country's troubled past.
"These films celebrate our culture and diversity, and also showcase our vehicles' capabilities," says Selvin Govender, Marketing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars. "We're highlighting our country's encompassing beauty and bringing home what South Africans love about their country while we position Mercedes-Benz SUVs as luxury vehicles for the South African journey." Govender adds that the genes from the iconic GClass are carried into each of the current Mercedes-Benz SUVs, making them the best on every terrain!
2017 HONDA CRF450RX Honda has an all-new, genuine competition-ready enduro machine in its off-road line up - the CRF450RX. And it takes as its rock-solid base the engine and chassis package of the 17YM CRF450R Honda's first totally new 450cc moto-crosser in eight years. The Honda CRF450R has been a benchmark since its introduction in 2002. It has defined the art of balance, with an engine that produces hard-hitting, useable power and a chassis that allows the rider to put every drop of that power to good use. It has always been a machine that offers total control, together with the stability and durability that Honda has long been famed for. This makes it the perfect platform on which to build an enduro machine, giving the CRF450RX both the pure moto-cross DNA to deal with any special enduro stage and the confidence-inspiring competence to handle flat-out trails, challenging climbs and tight, tricky sections with ease. The CRF450RX is something truly special, not just for Honda, but for the enduro world to ride and race. It looks different and feels different to the rest of the pack. And, just like the new CRF450R, it is compellingly fast. Model Overview The 17YM CRF450R has been built from the wheels up based on direct input from AMA and European MX teams, and packs a power to weight ratio 11% better than the outgoing design. The CRF450RX is identical in almost every area, but has some crucial changes to create an uncompromising enduro focus. Both front and rear suspension are less firm, with lighter compression damping and a lower spring rate for the shock. It uses an enduro-standard 18in rear wheel, and sidestand and 8.5L fuel tank are also added for practicality and extended range. The CRF450RX's PGM-FI ignition timing map produces softer power and torque delivery than the CRF450R to aid traction feel in awkward conditions. As on the CRF450R, the EMSB (Engine Mode Select Button) provides the rider with 3 distinct choices: Mode 1 equals all-round smooth performance, Mode 2 gives the most easy-to-manage throttle feel, and Mode 3 delivers the power in the most aggressive, responsive way. Electric start is fitted as standard. Engine The CRF450RX's 449cc engine shares the specification of the new CRF450R engine, which has received an 11% boost in top-end power for 2017, while still offering its trademark progressive, usable power and torque delivery throughout the range. Compression ratio is set at 13.5:1 with bore and stroke of 96mm x 62.1mm. Chassis The CRF450RX uses the seventh generation CRF aluminium beam frame with improved turning performance, front-end stability and traction. It also delivers greater rear wheel drive with elevated levels of rider feedback and predictability.

Namib Diesel Social League *Drum roll*.. And the winners of the Namib Diesel Social League 2016 is …. “FCS!!!” Well done you guys you deserve to hold that trophy aloft, which goes to show that more often than not the most consistent team goes through to win the event. They were the only team that did not use a reserve. Wow, what a turnout for the final round and prize giving. It was awesome to see the Club so packed again and it was definitely a huge pat on the back for the committee for the effort they put in to make it such a great social event, which of course was made possible by the continued sponsorship of Namib Diesel. 360 runners participated in Husab Marathon
Swakop Uranium Mining Company hosted a successful Husab Marathon and fun runs for close to 360 runners last Saturday at the turn off of the Husab Mine Road, which is a scenic run through the mountains and the Khan River. Runners have all complimented the route as unique and different from any other race. Sammy Kipoech Tum won the men's race in the marathon in a time of 2:25:31, followed by Simon Shipingana in a time of 2:26:30 with Paulus Vilho in third place, clocking 2:27:57. Nangula Ekandjo won the women's marathon in a time of 2:51:00, followed by Sofia Nambambi in 2:53:00 with Saiti Eshitele in third place, in a time of 3:09:46. Tum and Ekandjo walked away with price moneys of N$3 000 each in their age categories while receiving an additional N$8 000 each as overall winners. At the event, Erongo Regional Councillor Juuso Kambueshe, on behalf of Erongo Regional Governor, Cleophas Mutjavikua said the Husab Marathon contributes to a healthy lifestyle while bringing together communities from across the country. The Governor said, by drawing runners from across the borders of Namibia, the Husab Marathon will attract visitors to Namibia and the mighty Erongo Region, thus boosting spending in the region and aiding in the region's economic growth. “I want to thank the Swakop Uranium management for this initiative, as it demonstrates the company's commitment towards the well-being of the people of Namibia. My wish is that the Husab Marathon will become the flagship race, not only in the Erongo region but the African continent at large.” The Governor said the Husab Marathon makes it possible for young Namibian children to receive a better education, as proceeds from the event will be donated to the /Khomdare Kindergarten,
which is situated in Otjimbingwe, 60Km south of Karibib. /Khomdare Kindergarten has been in operation since 1999, and has prepared hundreds of young children from the area for primary school. The kindergarten currently has 44 learners, while three teachers take care of the children and oversee the teaching. The Governor said the kindergarten faces numerous challenges, mainly of a financial nature, and relies on donations by parents for its survival. “I am thus grateful for the financial contribution which the Swakop Uranium Foundation will make towards the /Khomdare Kindergarten.” The donation by the Swakop Uranium Foundation will enable the /Khomdare Kindergarten to meet its needs of infrastructure upgrade and equipment needed to teach the children. Swakop Uranium CEO, Zheng Keping said: “The Husab Marathon is an important event as it allows us to continue to integrate our employees and their families into the communities in the Erongo region.” “It is nice to see such a good turn-out of people, in particular families, which creates a good camaraderie of friendship,” he said. “This event is particularly memorable this year, as it happens at the juncture when Husab Mine, the single largest uranium mine in the world, is transitioning from construction to commissioning.” He thanked all the runners who have participated in the event since its inception. “Without you, this event would not be possible,” Zheng added.
