Swakop River reaches the Atlantic The Swakop River reached the Atlantic Ocean at about 8:00 on Wednesday, 16 February, 2021 for the first time since 2011.

The Swakop River Mouth was a hive of activity as hundreds of people armed with cameras, video recorders and drones gathered at the mouth to capture the very rare and phenomenal spectacle of the water completing its more than 300km journey to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Swakop River, with its source in the Khomas Highland along with its main tributary, the Khan River originating near the settlement of Otjisemba, north-west of Okahandja, is one of the largest

Residential and all other account holders ate advised to settle their municipal accounts as soon as possible and if not possible, account holders should make the necessary arrangements before 1 April, in order to avoid water disconnections.

On Monday 14 February 2022 the average level of all Namibian dams stood at 84.6%. In the south, the level of dams was at 92.9%. In the central areas of Namibia, the level of dams has now reached 66.3%, while the eastern dam levels stand at 26.5%.

With more rain expected in catchment areas, people are urged to be vigilant at all times and not take any risks by crossing rivers in flood.

The discussions platform gave an informative look at the responsibilities and obligations of public officials in the local authorities and regional councils, and how old ineffective practices to be 'unlearned' and new productive practices to be 'relearned'. During the opening remarks at the event, Deputy Minister of Rural and Urban Development, Nathalia /Goagoses, highlighted the importance of good governance and its implementation into Namibian institutions. “Let us, as a nation, move forward with renewed enthusiasm. A new mental picture should guide the actions and processes we will undertake.”

entails, “along with greater political autonomy comes more responsibility and financial resources. It is critical to match authority and accountability by clearly demarcating who is responsible for what. Consequently, those who are accountable must also have the authority to deliver results.”

Director-General of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Paulus Noa says, “the Republic of Namibia was built on the principles of democracy, rule of law and justice for all.

When we talk about justice for all, this entails administrative justice. All of us know what corruption is. All of us know what immoral conduct is. It is a matter of us fighting corruption head on.”

Mayoral Relief Fund The Mayoral Relief Fund has over the years assisted the Walvis Bay community in various aspects, but from December 2020 to date, due to Covid-19 that has hampered fundraising activities, the fund has been operating on the goodwill of the business communities and individuals.

The most notable, but not least to, is Mr Sandro De Coveia, Mr Laurencious Julius, Red Cross Namibia, Unisocial, Round Table Namibia, Namibia Community Trust and Freddy's Fish through the Deep-Sea Products Development Trust. For the past 11 months, the Round Table has donated food hampers, cosmetics, blankets and vouchers on numerous occasions amounting to almost N$30 000. These donations have assisted needy members of the community, including numerous shack fire victims who at times lose everything.

When the office failed to host a Christmas party for the elderly in 2020, which is a yearly tradition in Walvis Bay, we had the opportunity to hand over 250 x N$200 food vouchers to the value of N$50 000 to the elderly.

Namibia Community Trust, through Charlane Minnaar also assisted the Office of the Mayor to honour obligations of providing for the needy. Their contributions included food, blankets, cosmetics, clothes, and school uniforms. Assistance was also provided to community members who were hospitalized, those living in old age homes and other elderly residents in Walvis Bay. An Oxygen machine was also installed at the Kuisebmond Old Age home. Total donations amounted to approximately N$100 000.

Freddy's Fish, through their trust, has been the biggest contributor by far. Funding from them has provided financial assistance as follows: N$115 000 was paid for accommodation of 21 Topnaar students who are studying at NIMT. N$675 288 went to the construction of three additional units at the Kuisebmond Old Age home as well as some maintenance work. N$55 291 was spent on two early childhood development centres (Penombili Day Care and Promise Land) for the construction of a playground and additional admin office) N$4 900 went to training for poultry farming to 10 individuals. N$20 000 was transferred to the Junior Municipal Council vote to assist with their projects.

N$222 382 was paid to eight students to cover their outstanding tuition fees so they were able to proceed with their studies as well as accommodation for one student. The students are from IUM, NUST, Welwitchia Training Centre, i-Care health Institute and UNAM. The Mayoral Relief Fund would not exist without the people of Walvis Bay and the business community who have proven time and again how deep their pockets can be. The fund exists because of you. We thank you from the bottom of our heart.

AIFI donates to the needy All Inclusive Fishing Investments (AIFI) (Pty) Ltd donated various items to rural area communities in Namibia, to the value of more than N$ 320 000.

AIFI has embarked on a Corporate Social Responsibility programme since they were allocated Fishing Rights and subsequent Fishing Quotas from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in April 2020.

The Director of All Inclusive Fishing Investments, Edward Paul Rheis said the items included, food parcel donations, water tanks and start-up groceries for shops in Okombahe and farms nearby Usakos.

Rheis said, “This year its focus on supporting Kindergartens and people with small business who could not survive because of the negative impact of Covid-19. We also donated various educational tools for Kindergartens in Swakopmund, Henties Bay, Usakos and Walvis Bay. Donations of wheelchairs to disabled people in Windhoek, Usakos and Okombahe were given and we want to continue with this noble idea in other areas depending on the budgetary means of our company,” Rheis added. “We trust that the companies within the Fishing Sector could follow suit and support the efforts of the Government of the Republic of Namibia easier in terms of provision of drought relief and other programmes,” he concluded.

Hoanib River reaches the ocean After good rains over parts of north-western Namibia the Hoanib River between Möwe Bay and Terrace Bay, and one of the 12 fleeting seasonal rivers in the west of Namibia has reached the Atlantic Ocean for the first time since the 2007 and 2008 raining season.

In the meantime, Roads Authority (RA) said that, due to the heavy rains that are experienced countrywide, we might experience flooding or wash-aways on some of our roads. Hence, all motorists are kindly requested to exercise extreme caution, when travelling, at all times.

Kindly take note of the following affected roads in the Kunene Region.

MR 76 (Uis-Khorixas), The Ugab Bridge and some sections on this road were severely damaged. Hence, the section form Ugab River to Khorixas has been closed, with immediate effect, until further notice. Road users are kindly requested to use the alternative route via Omaruru.

MR126 from Khorixas. The Langasem pass was washed out for approximately 7 kilometers. Road users should not attempt to cross the Unib and Huab rivers during this period. The road is only accessible by 4x4 vehicles. However, extra caution must be exercised.

D2612 Twyfelfontein area. The Aba-Huab river is flooding had has affected the roads.

Twyfelfontein has been cut off/cannot be accessed.

MR128 (Palmwag-Sesfontein).

The Hoanib River and Skelm River are flooding and vehicles cannot pass through. Sesfontein has been cut off/cannot be accessed.

Please also take note that DR2628 (the link between MR 126 and D 2612) has been closed temporary to all traffic.

RA will monitor all the affected roads and will continuously update the public on relevant media and the RA social media platforms. Our maintenance teams are on standby to ensure that damaged roads are repaired, where possible, within a reasonable time period.

Namport records positive growth amidst difficult economic times The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) continues to record positive growth in its business dealings amidst the current economic turmoil, which the world is still recovering from.

With only one and half months left of its financial year, the Ports Authority is pleased to announce an increase of 252 vessel (24%) calls during April 2021-January 2022, in comparison to the same period in 2020/2021's financial year.

The increase in vessel calls were predominantly due to increased petroleum vessels, Namibian and foreign fishing vessels, foreign tugs, and research vessels. An increase of sixteen percent (16%) is also noted in vessel gross tonnages.

The Ports Authority is equally proud to announce an increase in its Bulk and Break Bulk (BBB) volumes with an improvement of 173,587 tonnes (5%), year on year. The growth is mainly due to increased exports of 251 334 tonnes (20%) of commodities such as marble, ship spares, petroleum products, and bulk salt.

During the past two decades, Namport has recorded substantial growth, in both size and significance, from a minor national port to a key regional and international role player.

With its recent substantial infrastructural investment in expanding the facilities and its capabilities at the Port of Walvis Bay, it is set to increase its relevance even more.

The Namibian Ports Authority is well on the trajectory of realizing its vision of becoming the best performing seaports in Africa.

During the inauguration, Chairperson of the board of DBN, Sarel van Zyl, highlighted the importance and the need for operational capacity in the Erongo region.

Private investors pledge toward creation of a fishing school Rudi Bowe at Walvis Bay Private investors have pledged cash and services worth N$300 000 at the launch of the Walvis Bay Fishing School Magazine held on Saturday, 5 February.

The Walvis Bay Fishing School Magazine is aimed at raising funds towards the creation of a state-of-the-art fishing school at the harbor town.

The magazine is part of the entrepreneur's commitment to bring innovative and diverse technical vocational education training to prepare the Walvis Bay community for continued growth and jobs for the future.

Founder of the initiative, Knowledge Ipinge, said at the launch of the magazine the Walvis Bay Fishing School Magazine is playing a leading role in providing and disseminating information for and about the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in Namibia. The Walvis Bay Fishing School was established with a mandate to provide basic fishing and maritime education to bridge the shortage of TVET skills in the value chain. The Fishing School will operate a residential program created around practical training that build skills and experience aimed at getting our students into full time employment or entrepreneurship and will start with courses for which strong revenue potential exists and then add on lower-margin programs once a solid revenue base has been established.

The Walvis Bay Fishing School is the brainchild of Knowledge Ipinge, Harold Davids a fishing technology expert and Francois Botha a Class 3 maritime officer. The trio is in a process to brief the relevant authorities such as the Namibia Training Authority (NTA), Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) to finalise the necessary accreditation to include their courses in the National Skills Development Plan for Vocational Education and Training (VET).

Ipinge said the school will offer innovative and diverse technical vocational education and training to prepare Walvis Bay and Namibia for conti-

nued growth and employment creation.

Ipinge said, “The Walvis Bay Fishing School is a massive enabler and a huge investment for Walvis Bay as well as the country that will not only provide training to Namibian youth but will change the dynamics and education aspect of the industry and at the same time explore the wealth of the blue economy.

Davids said that they have adopted an asset-light business model, mainly informed by the global economic chaos as a result of Covid-19 and that their approach is to reduce operational costs, streamline operations, and target untapped customer segments through providing a complete smart marine ecosystem of navigational, communication, engineering, fishing, and offshore training solutions.

The school will be collaborating with international companies specializing in marine technology, such as Dove Air, Archipelago Marine Research Ltd, and Wärtsilä Corporation.

Presidential economic advisor, James Mnyupe, who also attended the event, applauded the entrepreneurs behind the Walvis Bay Fishing School for being innovative by tapping into the ocean economy.

Mnyupe said, “The Walvis Bay Fishing School is a massive enabler and a huge investment for Walvis Bay as well as the country. Namibia overall wants to champion the blue ocean economy that does not only focus on fishing but various other aspects that can bring both revenue and employment for the country.”

He added that the magazine is a brilliant initiative. It is really trying to make it clearer on the opportunities and copulating in the blue ocean economy.

“The state-of-the-art technology that will be used at the school is a first of its kind for Namibia.

Therefore the entrepreneurs of the Walvis Bay Fishing School needs to be applauded,” Mnyupe said.

Spar and Gondwana sponsors Moon Valley Marathon

Grocery chain Spar and hospitality and tourist services provider Gondwana Collection Namibia, are the sponsors of the Moon Valley Marathon that was launched on Tuesday 15 February in Windhoek.

Moon Valley Marathon is set for 19 March in Swakopmund It is expected that about 600 runners will participate in the full marathon over 42km, half marathon (21km) and 10km fun race.

Operational manager at Spar, Francois Lotter said Spar has been involved in local sports activities for several years.

Lotter said, “Their partnership with Gondwana Collection Namibia is to give back to the community and to the individual participants.”

Gondwana direct sales manager, Steny Watermeyer said: “The idea behind the race is to create an event that is fun, sustainably managed and most importantly, live, that the sporting community can look forward to.”

The full and half marathon races will start at 06:00 from the tennis courts at the Mole and will run along the Moon Valley landscape, while the 10km fun run will begin at 10:00.

The Moon Valley is situated about 32km east of Swakopmund in the Namib Naukluft Park. This tourist attraction, described as “otherworldly” is a vista across eroded hills and valleys carved by the Swakop River.

Registrations will be done online and already opened yesterday. It closes on 14 March at 17:00.

Registration fees for the full and half marathon are N$250 while it is N$150 for the 10km fun run.

CFC 1 prevailed in the preliminary round against every opponent they faced with favourable weather conditions. Backed up by home turf advantage, SFC 1 had the upper hand against Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) 2, SKW 4, and CFC 3. In the last fixtures in the group, CFC 3 defeated SKW teams and finished third in the group. SKW 1 won Group B, with CFC2, SFC 2, and SKW 3 completing the final placements.

CFC 1 and their club mates CFC 2 duelled in the Category A semi-finals. CFC 1 qualified for the final without any challenges. It was an exciting affair in the semi-finals between SKW 1 and SFC 1 as the lead kept changing during the encounter. In the end, SKW 1 won the match with a three-point lead.

CFC 3 convincingly sailed through to the final in the Category B semi-final by eliminating SKW 3. SFC 2 followed CFC 3 into the final after defeating SKW 2.

Participating clubs offered an exciting Category B final to the spectators. SFC 2 won the first set while CFC 3 secured two sets. Everything looked like a tournament win for CFC 3 in the fourth set before SFC 2 turned the tables around, won the fourth and fifth set, and defended the Category B accolade.

Third place in Category A went Category A title in the Bank Windhoek Fistball League's opening tournament played over the weekend to CFC 2, who were strengthened by the Danish national player Thore Naujeck as a setter.

The final of Category A started evenly.

After precise serves from Michael Baas, in the first selection, SKW had to accept a 9:11 defeat. In the second and third sets, CFC 1 got going as they increased the tempo. SKW 1, on the other hand, found no resistance against the strong Cohen side and lost these sets with 6:11 and 3:11. CFC 1 hence got revenge and was crowned the winner of the opening tournament.

The tournament's junior Category saw six teams as participants. SKW 2 defeated SFC 2 in the final and was crowned champions. The third and sixth spots went to SFC 3, SKW 3, SFC 1, and SKW 1, respectively.

In the adult category, Olaf Beiter from SKW 1 was named player of the day. Leila Grögli from SKW was named player of the day in the youth category.

Next on the fistball calendar is the Bank Windhoek Fistball League first round on Saturday, 5 March 2022, at SKW in Windhoek.
