The Drags a crowd Humpback whale stranding continuespuller Another washed out at Mile 106 Erwin Leuschner

Scientists are concerned after yet another humpback whale carcass washed out along Namibia's coastline.

The latest stranding occurred about 30 kilometers north of Cape Cross at Mile 106. According to Lüderitz Marine Research this brings to at least the tenth dead whale found in just the past two months along the Namibian and South African west coast shores.

“Unfortunately we don't have any indication as to why this is happening. At the moment and without full necropsies carried out, it is impossible to come to any conclusions,” the Namibia Dolphin Project (NDP) said in a statement recently.

Members of the public arrest two cellphone thieves Erwin Leuschner Two alleged robbers from Windhoek got more than they bargained for when they stole a cellphone on Saturday evening in Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu the two suspects grabbed and held the complainant from behind, threatened to stab her and took her cellphone, a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 valued at N$15 000. “They ran off, but luckily members of the public assisted the complainant and apprehended the two suspects and called the police. The cellphone was recovered,” Iikuyu said. The two suspects will appear in Walvis Bay court today.

Humpback whale stranding Continued from Page 1 “This is a very unusual occurrence as humpbacks are normally seen off the Namibian coast between June-November and we usually get no more than two strandings reported throughout the whole year,” the statement continues.

Peaks in humpback strandings have occurred in the past elsewhere in the world though (in Brazil and Australia). “So it is not unheard of for this to happen.” According to the NDP the west African population has been growing steadily (between 7 and 10 % annually) and the population is generally regarded as a healthy one. Therefore competition for resources (e.g. food) also increases. “This may force younger animals to forage in new areas and this may be why we are seeing humpbacks off Namibia at this time of year.”

The statement continues that there are a number of humpbacks occurring off the west coast of South Africa during the summer months, feeding in the rich Benguela current, but there is very little data from the Namibian coast. “So while this is a tragic occurrence, the data it provides is vital in filling in the gaps in our knowledge of this species,” it states. namib times will report more on this soon.

Bike stolen in Walvis Bay found Erwin Leuschner in Omusati Region One week after a quadbike was stolen in Walvis Bay the police, through its intelligence unit, managed to recover it in the Omusati Region and arrest one suspect. According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the red quadbike, valued at N$50 000, was reported stolen between 7 and 9 April at CPP in Walvis Bay. “The suspect and the bike are already brought back to the Erongo region,” Iikuyu said. The suspect is expected to appear in the Walvis Bay Magistrates Court today.

Carnage on Erongo roads during Easter weekend Erwin Leuschner At least two people died on the roads of the Erongo Region during this year's Easter holiday. Several more were seriously injured during various motor vehicle accidents. The Namibian Police remains gravely concerned about rising road accident statistic.

According to Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, regional crime investigations coordinator for the Namibian Police in Erongo, one person sustained serious injuries during an accident on Sunday afternoon about 35 kilometers North of Henties Bay. The person sadly passed away a short while later. Initial reports indicate that the driver, Salom Antonio (32), lost control over a Toyota Corolla whilst traveling towards Cape Cross. The vehicle overturned several times. Antonio was admitted to the Swakopmund State Hospital where he passed away shortly before midnight.

The passenger Cecilia Salathiel (24) was seriously injured and was later transferred to Windhoek from a Swakopmund hospital. The other occupants of the vehicle, Eben Mutilifa (20) and Elia Shimwino (32) sustained no injuries, while Elizabeth Hangula (27) was slightly injured.

The police in Walvis Bay is investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless and/or negligent driving after an accident early on Sunday at about 23:15 that claimed the life of Loretha Louw (41). It is alleged that at the intersection of Nangolo Mbumba Drive and 5th Road a white Nissan Double cab (N154-660W) with two occupants, Robert Hanekom (45) and passenger Louw, was hit on the passenger's door by a white Toyota Hilux Double cab (N168-988W). Liam Daniel (25) was the only occupant of the other vehicle.

Louw died on the spot and the driver, Hanekom, was seriously injured. Daniel was also seriously injured. The injured were admitted at the Welwitschia hospital and Walvis Bay State Hospital respectively.

Six people were seriously injured and one sustained critical injuries during an accident on Friday at about 15:16 on the road between Karibib and Omaruru.

According to Deputy Commissioner Iikuyu the suspected cause of the accident is a tyre blow-out. The white Nissan double cab (N2849OM) overturned with seven passengers and the driver about ten kilometers from the Karibib air force base. The driver Mrs. E Katjiua sustained only minor injuries.

A six year-old boy, Penayee Katjiua, was one of the critically injured and was transferred to a hospital in Windhoek. Five other passengers sustained serious injuries and were admitted to the Usakos State Hospital, where one more person was later also transferred to Windhoek: Johanna Neshuku (29), Ingrith Katjiua (17), Himumuine Katjiua (19), Nancy Tjitandi (17), Salomon Petrus (44). Only one occupant, Saddo Mushule (30), were slightly injured.

Two Zimbabwean nationals were injured during another serious motor vehicle accident on Friday at about 22:40 on the B2 road between Usakos and Arandis. According to Iikuyu the driver, Michael Richard Matafeni (26) and his girlfriend Bonani Mthimkhulu (25), were on their way towards Walvis Bay for the Easter Weekend traveling in a silver Toyota Etios (FB77YZGP).

It is alleged about 45 kilometers from Usakos the driver lost control of the vehicle causing the vehicle to overturn. Eyewitnesses reported that speeding might have been the cause of the accident. The girlfriend had just arrived in Namibia from South Africa for a visit. She sustained a fractured hip and a head injury. She was admitted to the Swakopmund State Hospital and is in a stable condition. The driver, who works and resides in Windhoek, sustained minor injuries.

Sanlam Namibia sponsored N$200 000 for the Sanlam Career Expo. The expo showcases, inspires and educates young learners and graduates on career choices.

The expo is now in its ninth year with Sanlam Namibia sponsoring it for six years.

The event usually takes place in Windhoek and Ongwediva, but this year for the first time it is hosted in the Erongo Region with Walvis Bay playing the host. This event is a major platform for career advice and opportunities to students.

The 2017 Sanlam Career Expo was launched on 12 April at the Municipal Hall in Walvis Bay, where exhibitors displayed information and other detail of different careers. It successfully provided learners who visited the Expo guidance and motivation.

Six schools ‘Grade11 and 12 learners attended: These are Karibib Private School, Secondary School De Duine, Atlantic Junior Secondary School, Tutaleni High School,l Kuisebmond Secondary School and Duneside High School.

“It was a great platform to address the local needs of the community. Speakers were inspiring.

This was a wonderful opportunity to make a difference and add value to the career planning process of these learners”, according to Janine De Klerk, an exhibitor from the Vocational College of Walvis Bay. The organise committee wish to involve more private schools in future.

Multiple arrests for stock theft, illegal hunting Erwin Leuschner

The police in the Erongo Region arrested a number of suspects over the course of the past week for being in possession of suspected stolen stock or for hunting without a valid permit.

This was revealed by Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, regional crime investigations coordinator for the Namibian Police in Erongo.

According to Iikuyu, four suspects were arrested on Friday (14 April) at about 23:00 on the Karibib Otjimbingwe road. The persons were found in possession of one cattle carcass valued at N$6 000 and could not prove ownership.

They will appear in the Omaruru Magistrates Court today.

Three more suspects were arrested on 13 April in the Swakopmund suburb Mondesa for being in possession of game meat without a valid permit.

The meat, oryx meat, is valued at N$2 000 and was found at house no 2223, Cemetery Street.

The suspects are expected to make their first court appearance in Swakopmund today.

Five more suspects were arrested in the vicinity of Uis on Saturday at about 14:00, for allegedly unlawfully hunting a Springbuck without a permit.

According to Iikuyu the suspects killed the animal, valued at N$4 000, near Langdam (dam 3) in the area of Uis. The five suspects were released on police bail of N$1 000 each and are expected to appear in the Omaruru magistrates court today.

Hemelbesem swept prosperity at the coast Sharoldine Bock

South African Award winning Afrikaans hip hop artist Simon Witbooi, referred to as HemelBesem, and his wife Claudia Swartbooi “Yoma” (queen of rap) visited the harbour town from 12-16 April, where he had a meeting at the mayor's office, visited senior citizens, spoke thrice at the Restoration Centre, had a book launch, a Good Friday Service and Youth Bash as part of a packed schedule.

His stage name Hemelbesem defines his purpose. It demonstrates his strive to “sweep the earth clean in a heavenly manner” and at the same time it means he has “his head in the clouds but his feet flat on the ground. He is an inspiration and encourages us to also be a “besem” in our communities. He uses his music and book as mouthpieces of hope and encouragement. He wants to uplift and enable a better society.

The multi-talented artist connects his hip-hop to Gospel. “Unlike Hip-Hop, Gospel is not a genre and can be composed from Rock, heavy metal music, to mentioned a few. I have a lot to tell about religious issues as well as politics, discrimination and social economic issues. Gospel simply means good news and that's what I want to spread”, explains Hemelbesem.

He first arrived in Namibia (Windhoek) on 6 April where he was a speaker at the Save The Family Conference, hosted by the Fatherhood Foundation.

Due to the impact made on him in 2004, he decided to revisit the Narraville community. Here he met artists like Xisa who inspired him further and he wanted to share a stage with him and see their friendship bond getting even stronger.

His schedule in Walvis Bay started at the mayor's office. He wanted to pay homage to political elders, and thank them for welcoming them to Walvis Bay. In conversations they discussed the communities’ challenges and solutions to tackle these problems.

According to Hemelbesem, Councillor Valencia Izaaks impressed him most. She was also one of the speakers at his book launch and showed that they

have the right heart and spirit in terms of making a difference to the youth.

Hemelbesem is an edu-tainer (a combination of education and trainer). He entertains, but also brings a message forth.

Furthermore, he spoke thrice at the restoration centre.

He described the senior burgers event on Thursday morning as the highlight of the whole visit.

A record number of people attended the Youth Bash in which he performed with Xisa, his wife Claudia, Ly The No Mad Poet and many other artists like upcoming singers, rappers and dance performers.

He launched his book on Saturday. A book filled with lyrics, idioms and expressions that he tells his life story (autobiography). It talks of things that lies nearest to his heart and the book is in the language of his heart: Afrikaans.

A reverend on Worcester (South Africa) told him once: “Simon the language that you pray and the language that you curse is the language of your heart”. To Hemelbesem life is based and rooted in Afrikaans.

His making his own tv show in October (channel not been identified yet) to underline that Afrikaans is a language with his roots in Africa.

His main objective was for people in the community to identify local icons whom they can learn from.

He wants to inspire and aspire, but also associates with artists sharing the same motives.

Hemelbesem wish to thank Walvis Bay for their support, hospitality and kindness. He is sure to visit some day again.

Heavy lift soon conducted off port of Walvis Bay Maritime barriers are shifted for Walvis Bay later this month, when a heavy lift vessel will be partly submerged off the port to load a dredger and anchor boat onto its cargo deck.

The dredger and anchor boat belong to China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC) and were used in the groundworks for the construction of the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay. With the project concluding, these vessels are obsolete in their purposes and are returned to China.

The heavy lift vessel sails under the name Kang Sheng Kou and works as follows: large ballast tanks aboard the ship can be flooded with seawater allowing the ship to submerge in the water. With the vessel then literally partly sunken, other ships and even oil rigs can float onto its deck. The water is then again pumped from the ballast tanks raising the heavy lift vessel and lifting the vessels clear from the water. The heavy lift vessel is the most costand time efficient way to transport large marine vessels.

The Swakopmund municipality monitors air pollution caused by industries and business in town closely of late, doing so by enforcing Ordinance 11 of 1976 (Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Ordinance). Council in its most recent meeting confirmed it would in future closely monitor air pollution levels caused the various industries.

The item was discussed at the council meeting after the matter was discussed at the Planning Forum early in March.

Well-known photographer Tony Figueira dies One of Namibia's most celebrated photographers, Tony Figueira, passed away during the early hours of yesterday. He leaves behind his wife Gabi. Figueira, who was born in Angola, owned the design studio Studio 77.

Figueira studied journalism at Rhodes University in South Africa. He worked for several radio stations including the Voice of America, and for antiapartheid newspapers like The Rand Daily Mail. He became known for documenting key moments in contemporary Southern African history.

He suffered from Multiple myeloma, a type of

cancer. The National Art Gallery of Namibia in 2015 ran an exhibition to support him, titled: For Tony.

Should they be successful in their application to get rectification could they return to the magistrate's court in their pursuing a claim for unpaid levies by disgruntled residents of Rossmund. To date, some 5 months have passed and no attempt to approach the High court has been made.

More than a year after the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA) donated two brick making machines to the Office of the Governor in the Erongo Region, to help speed up the process of building houses in Swakopmund, guidelines on the utilization of said machine have finally been determined.

The Swakopmund Town Council at its recent meeting decided on a way forward regarding the brick making machines. These machines are soon being deployed on a vacant erf which is yet to be identified. Once deployed it can be rented for a maximum period of three months by members of the community. The monthly rent for the machine is set at N$319.

Commuters should not use taxis without a number Commuters in Swakopmund are advised for their own safety not to make use of taxis which are not marked with an identification number. This was said at a public meeting held last Thursday by the Swakopmund Traffic Department with taxi owners and drivers. The meeting took place at Meduletu Community Hall in Mondesa.

According to Traffic Officer Bennet Stanley Kheibeb from the Municipal Traffic Service of Swakopmund, the reason the meeting was due to the department experiencing some challenges when it comes to the operations of taxis in town. “There are some issues we highlighted during the meeting that are getting out of hand,” he said to namib times. Over 200 registered taxi drivers and taxi owners, and even owners of unregistered vehicles without permits, attended the meeting. It was described as a very successful and well attended meeting.

Walfisch Karnevalsverein (WAKA) The Carnival Association of Walvis Bay, called WAKA, is a nonprofitable organization that motivates itself to uphold the Namibian carnival tradition and culture, for the greater benefit of Walvis Bay. The initiative began as a means of presenting our unique Namibian traditional carnival festival in Walvis Bay. Of course, our carnival will maintain its traditional German origin, with the added cultural flavour of English and Afrikaans. We believe in celebrating carnival where young and old are able to participate and enjoy our well-presented festivities.

Waka is hosting its 7th Carnival this year with the Motto “Wir stellen alles auf'm Kopp” which is based on the whole world being turned upside down.

James Lewis (38), Kristiaan Kristopher (27), Fransisco Mathias (31) and Michael Muyunda (29) appeared on 19 counts of theft charges from a motor vehicle which was properly locked. The matter was postponed to 18 April for fixing of trial date. The accused are on bail of N$30 000 each.

Magistrate Court Alfred Noabeb (19) appeared on two counts of rape charges. The matter was postponed to 27 April for Prosecutor General's decision. The accused is on bail of N$5 000.

Easter Drags attracts crowds Piquet Jacobs

The annual Easter Drags again attracted many visitors and racing drivers from all over the country, entertaining young and old with non-stop racing from mid-day to sunset.

On Saturday, 15 April, 18th Street East was once again packed with fast cars.

Onlookers were treated to fierce line-ups, as some of Namibia's fastest racers went head to head. Waldo Beukes took the title of fastest car with a time of 12.193 seconds and Edson Soares Almeida the title of fastest bike with a time of 9.521 seconds.

A number of other impressive times were recorded at the event in the different classes.

Among the four cylinder vehicles, in class 4A1 Zachary Martin took first place with a time of 15.765 seconds and Jacques Frederick in second place with a time of 16.296 seconds. In class 4A2, Guntley Mouton, with a time of 14.724 seconds in first place, Rudolf Ryk Turck in second place with a time of 14.743 seconds and Xavier Romario Cloete in third with 15.323 seconds. Roberto Bertolini came in first with 13.185 seconds in class 4BF followed by Lester da Silva in second with 13.365 seconds and Panna Panna in third with 14.013 seconds. Deon Daniel Diergaardt narrowly took first place in the 4BR class with a time of 12.503 seconds with Piet du Toit in second with 12.824 seconds.

Nolan Angermund took first place in the 4CF class with a time of 14.602 seconds. In class 4CR Frikkie de Wit came in first with his time of 15.199 seconds. Dilano Strauss came in first with a time of 12.441 seconds in class 4CW, followed by Abbas Naidoo in second with 12.612 seconds and Johan Brand with 12.664 seconds.

In the five cylinder vehicle category, Tom Scholtz took first place with a time of 14.886 seconds in class 5BF and Enrique Jurgen Wellmann was first in class 5CW with his time of 12.667 seconds.

In the cylinder vehicle category, first place was taken by Schalk Willem Petras with 12.862 seconds, Devon Farmer took second place with 13.524 seconds and Ruben Maritz in third with 13.527 seconds, all in class 6BR. In the eight cylinder vehicle category, Fysal Brenner took first place with 12.975 seconds in clas 8AR, Terrence Knowles in first with 13.506 seconds in class 8BR, Waldo Beukes came in first with 12.193 seconds in class 8CR and Ronald Slamet in first with 13.335 seconds in class 8CW. In the bikes category, first place went to Ras van der Westhuizen with 10.913 seconds in class B1, followed by Mogamat Husselmann with 10.925 seconds and Romacio Neal Willemse with 10.957 seconds. In class B2, Edson Soares Almeida took the title with his time of 9.521 seconds, PM Almeida took second with 9.813 seconds and McAllen Husselmann in third with 9.998 seconds.

Erongo in the finals of The Namibian Newspaper Cup Sharoldine Bock and Sharlien Tjambari Erongo made it to the final. At the time of going to press yesterday Erongo Region was yet to play Otjozondjupa in the finals of The Namibian Newspaper Cup in Swakopmund.

On Friday, Omusati thrashed the Hardap 2-1, while Zambezi scored a goal against 0 from Oshana. The Erongo Region made an excellent strike and won against the Kavango East 3-0. Omaheke and Kunene had a neck to neck of 1-1 each as well as Ohangwena and Karas. Khomas won 3-0 against Oshikoto.

Oshana beat Omusati 5-3. Hardap beat Zambezi with a massive gab of 6-0 and Kunene and Kavango East drew 2-2.

On Saturday, Omaheke was beaten by Erongo 2-0.

Otjozondjupa won 1-0 against Karas. Oshikoto won 2-0 against Kavango West. Omusati and Zambezi equalised the score of 2-2. Hardap won against Oshana 3-1, while Kavango East trailed 0-2 which was caused by Omaheke. Erongo also won a historical 8-0 against Kunene. Otjozondjupa beat Ohangwena42, while Kavango West suffered 4-0 against Khomas.

During the semi-final on Sunday, Erongo and Hardap region drew 1-1 which ended 5-4 by means of penalties shots. Otjozondjupa won 4-3 on penalties after drawing 2-2. In the women football, Brave Gladiators won 7-0 against the U/17 Erongo Regional team. The Namibian and Nedbank Shadow team draw 1-1. 11 players was elected for the Erongo regional team and this only shows how well prepared they are.

On Monday morning during the loser match Khomas and Hardap Region battled it out and Hardap won the game with one goal to nil.
