Eight people, including two children, had a close shave on Saturday afternoon when their boat capsized off Vierkantklip in rough seas. The boat went belly-up and was then washed ashore. Damage to the craft is significant. The eight people escaped unscathed. One more picture on page 2.

Don’t ruin your holiday with drunken driving Trucks ordered to only Isaac Chikosi People who drive under the influence of alcohol, or any other intoxicating substance, must be prepared to face potentially holiday-ruining consequences. The bail amount is now fixed at N$8 000 for a person suspected of a drunken driving offense to be released on police bail prior to a first appearance in court. As opposed to a bail granted in a court, the Namibian Police can exercise discretion on a weekend day or public holiday whether to release a person on police bail and then remand the person to report on the first work day at court for a first appearance. Where there is no discretion any more is the bail amount. In an official letter by the Inspector-General of the Namibian Police, Lt.-Gen. Sebastian Ndeitunga to all regional commanders countrywide, the bail amount is now a fixed N$8 000 for Namibians and N$9 000 for foreigners or visitors. There will also be a zero tolerance approach to drivers testing positive during routine stops or where drivers are pulled over. If you test over the limit, have no illusions - you will be arrested and brought before court. Where you test positive for alcohol, but it is not over the legal limit, law enforcement officers can exercise the discretion not to allow you to drive further for a period of two hours. Law enforcement agencies at the coast has already started to enforce the law in all earnest. Over the weekend, a total of twelve drivers were arrested after testing above the legal alcohol limit in Walvis Bay and Continues on page 2

use road behind the dunes Owners and operators of trucks above 5-tons are only allowed to use the MR44 road behind the dune belt between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund for the duration of the festive holiday season. The Minister of Transport temporarily suspended the use of the B2 coastal road in the interest of road safety during the festive season. No truck or other goods delivery vehicles or buses above five tons will be allowed on the B2 coastal road until 18 January 2020. The prohibition came in force yesterday, after the Transport Ministry forwarded a press statement in this regard, signed by the Minister of Transport Mr John Mutorwa, to all law enforcement agencies countrywide.

Big influx to start on Friday The coast’s business-, accommodation and law enforcement segments are in agreement that the big influx of holiday makers to the coast is to start this coming Friday, 20 December. Most businesses, like law firms and other service industry stakeholders closed on Friday, 13 December and that already resulted in increased traffic volumes on Namibia’s national roads over the weekend. The coast is no exception with traffic volumes picking up on all roads. The major influx though is expected as from 20 December and even higher early next week just before Christmas.

Councillors Salomon and Marsh lead Swakopmund for next term Councillor Nehemiah Salomon was elected the Mayor of Swakopmund yesterday. The Deputy Mayor of the holiday town is Clr Assertha Marsh. The election of town council office bearers took place at council chambers at the municipality of Swakopmund with magistrate Nelao Brown presiding over the election. In his acceptance speech, Clr Salomon said he will work close with the management council and other stakeholders for a better Swakopmund. “Let us join hands and hear the crisis of the people of DRC. I believe residents want to see a balanced approach when it comes to addressing issues that affects them. We will continue to put our people first when we make decisions that affect them”. Salomon further said he will work along with other councillors to address issues such as unemployment, poverty and housing shortages among others. Cllrs Andreas Jonas, Pauline Nashilundo, Cleophas Ngwena and Erkki Shitana are serving as members of the management committee. Elifas Khoaseb was elected as an alternative member of the management committee. The ordinary members of the management committee are Elisa Hangula, Omuiingona Uahimisa Kaapehi and Wilfred Groenewald.

Drunken driving Continued from page 1 Swakopmund. Ten of the arrested persons were released on N$8 000 police bail and all made first appearances in the coastal towns' magistrate's courts. In one incident, a driver pulled over and arrested decided to pull a stunt to avoid

being arrested for drunken driving. A stunt which almost cost him his life. When he was ordered by police officers at the B2 road block near Swakopmund just after midday on Saturday to lock his car and get into the police vehicle to be formally charged at the Swakopmund police station, he drank transmission fluid which was in the vehicle. Instead of preventing being arrested things turned for the worse.

The man suffered poisoning and his now recovering under police guard in a coastal hospital. From there it would be straight to the dock to be charged for drunken driving. The public is urged not to make themselves guilty of drunken driving. Not only is a drunken driver a danger to him or herself, but the person places passengers and other road users in grave danger too.

Readers letter

Swift action from the police Today I experienced a rare example of excellent Police work. My domestic worker was robbed at knife point this morning at 06.30 right in front of my house. Her handbag fell to the ground and the robber only took her cell phone. I tried to chase after the guy, but of course he was long gone. 30 Minutes later I got a sms from her phone pretending to be “her “,asking me for an E-wallet of N$150. They obviously were not aware that the girl was with me and that I already knew about the robbery. I wrote back that I was at work and that I could not go home to do the E-wallet, but I offered that “she” could come and fetch the money. Back came a sms that “ she” was busy and could not come. I suggested that “she” would send a friend or family member. They fell for it and we arranged a meeting at Ocean View SPAR. I phoned the Police and informed them. The Police came with 3 people in civil clothes and stayed close to me without making any signs of knowing me. The guy showed up and was arrested on the spot. 2 other gangsters of which one was the actual robber ran away but were caught immediately by the Police. We got the cell phone back and the whole gang was arrested in a matter of minutes. This was efficient and well executed Police work and I would like to thank the Swakopmund Police very much for their swift and professional work. Best regards Molly

Vehicle with Walvis Bay registration used in Otjiwarongo robbery Floris Steenkamp Four armed men, driving a vehicle with a Walvis Bay registration mark, are believed to be behind a N$100 000 armed robbery at the depot of Northern Fuel Distributors at Otjiwarongo at 07:45 yesterday morning. The four suspects were armed with panga's and one robber was dressed in a red coloured pair of trousers. The suspects entered the premises and grabbed a money bag containing N$100 000 in cash. They fled the scene in a silver Volkswagen Golf TSi with registration mark N22431WB. The Police launched a manhunt for the suspects and urged the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the thugs. Meanwhile, the coastal public is warned that criminal activities, specifically armed robberies, theft from person and housebreakings are on the increase. Many neighbourhoods, in the coastal towns experience a surge of people roaming the streets every day scouting for place to rob, burgle or to target victims either by smash and grab or grabbing valuables like hand bags, purses or cell phones and running off. In many instances those roaming are looking for opportunities and potential targets and report by cell phone. Other groups then carry out the actual robbery, burglary, smash and grab and certain taxi's are assisting with the getaway. Residents and visitors alike are urged to remain vigilant at all times. Don't create opportunities by leaving items unattended in vehicles. Over the weekend in Walvis Bay a cell phone valued at

N$27 000 was left unattended in a vehicle and stolen during a smash and grab. Don't leave items like fishing rods, bicycles, toys, hose pipes, garden chairs, camping chairs outside unattended, as it lures unwanted individuals to your property. Ensure alarm systems, camera systems and beams are in working order. Also be aware that burglars target homes without burglar bars to windows, specifically aluminium frames without burglar bars. Furthermore, ensure to pack away valuables such as hand bags, cell phones, laptop computers or jewellery overnight. Burglars will have difficulty to locate valuables in this way to steal. Be innovative in this exercise to conceal valuables. If you have a safe it is the time now to use it. Aluminium windows have snap-on frames which keeps the window glass in place along with a rubber seal. These snap-on frames can be removed with ease and minimal noise

In the past, the festive season has also seen its share of injuries and damage to property due to irresponsible behaviour and disregard for road safety and fellow road users. Such behaviour not only spoils the festive mood but can also cause the loss of lives. Similarly, the desert environment is home to many unique plants and small animals that are destroyed by such behaviour. To ensure a peaceful and safe holiday this year, visitors are reminded of the municipal regulations relating to the control of the seashore, the sea and its environment that have been in force since January 2004. The control over recreational activities and permissible routes for off-road vehicles and quad bikes as introduced by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism a few years ago remains in place. Traffic Control The Municipal Traffic Division and NAMPOL Traffic will exercise strict control over road use and adherence to traffic rules and signs. Roadblocks are set up to ensure that road users adhere to traffic safety regulations. Road users are always reminded to wear seat belts and to adhere to the speed limits. Motorists should note that various speed limits apply between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Avoid drinking or using a cell phone while driving. Also make sure that you have your driver's licence in the car when driving as well as the required emergency triangle. Switch on your headlights between dusk and dawn, and in foggy or hazy conditions.

A personal invitation to the traffic chief, Mr Platt Good day Mr Platt, the situation with trucks parking in Meersig is unacceptable. I have invested over three million in an erf and built a house. The trucks park on the pavement where they are being worked on. This right there in the street. There is also a container that has been sitting on the sidewalk for at least a year. Nossob street is full of broken-down trucks and a front-end loader is parked on an empty erf opposite my house. The owner of these trucks starts them up early in the morning and they are left to idle for long periods. This is very noisy. Surely this is not allowed nor is it legal. This must have an impact on the valuation of my property. The road is extremely narrow, and the truck owner's child was almost run over not too long ago when he rode his bicycle from the rear side of the truck. I assume one of the other neighbors must have complained as a few months ago, one of your officers was at the truck owner's house, but to date, he still operates his trucking business from his house. I challenge you personally to take a drive and inspect the streets of Meersig, specifically Nossob street. Further, should this not fall under your responsibility, then please advise where residents should lodge such complaints. Kind regards Mr G Wolfaardt 0811295697

Street food During the festive season a great number of street vendors will be presenting their delicacies to the public. Below are important health tips for the public when buying street food. · If the stall is unsanitary, purchasing food there will be at your own risk. · Take a little time to watch a street vendor and notice their habits of cleaning utensils, using tongs and keeping the food covered. · Do not eat food that is not protected from insects which can contaminate even freshly cooked dishes. · Make sure the food you are getting is being made for take-away and go for stalls that serve hot, freshly prepared food. · Watch the temperature of the food. · Food from street vendors should be cooked thoroughly. Warm or cold food should be kept or displayed under the correct temperatures. · Warm foods should be above 65°C. · Cold foods should be below 5°C. · Avoid dairy products as they are more susceptible to spoilage if not maintained under cold temperatures to stay fresh. · Wash all fruits and vegetables under running water before eating or cooking. · Always wash your hands before eating. · Street vendors are subject to national and local health regulations including certification and registration and regular inspections by Health Inspectors. As a customer you are entitled to ask a vendor if they are registered or to show their registration certificates. If a vendor is not registered to sell food, do not buy from them.

A taste of Christmas for senior citizens Rudi Bowe

Flamingo Villas Boutique Hotel hosted a Christmas breakfast buffet for the senior citizens of the Kuisebmond Old Age Home on Saturday 14 December. Belinda Burger, the General Manager of Flamingo Villas Boutique Hotel said: “Senior citizens are the reason we all are here, and they deserve to be spoiled. This event is to say thank you to our mothers, fathers and grandparents. Children are our future that is why we need to give back a little something”. Burger said that the occasion put bright smiles on the faces of the elderly. The event was a unique gesture of appreciation for the value the senior citizens brought to the community and society. “We recognise their contributions and do not seek to alienate their accomplishments; therefore, we re-assure our beloved elder residents that we are proud of them and that we care for them”, Burger added. Desmond Amunjela, the Duty Manager of Flamingo Villas Boutique Hotel said they at the hotel are so blessed to be able to be part of the lives of the senior citizens, even if it is just for the day and that they love them and it is their honour to serve them with an early Christmas breakfast. “We love you and get to serve you, but you bless us even more. Socialising with you make us appreciate things in a different light as we were all raised in a different time and the way you view things is for our generation a reminder to slow down and appreciate things.” Amunjela said. “You teach us so much just by being who you are and we at Flamingo Villas Boutique Hotel want the next generation to know that all seniors deserve to be respected and to have clean and comfortable lives ahead.” Amunjela added. Nande is the Distell Rossmund Open Champ The Rossmund Golf Course played hosts over the weekend of the 14/15 December to the 2019 Distell Rossmund Open Championship. Unfortunately again this year the tournament only managed to attract a field of 46 players representing clubs such as Windhoek, Oshakati, Oranjemund, Tsumeb, Gobabis, Walvis Bay and Rossmund – this was mainly due to other sporting events such as the Desert Dash – not to mention the Kwela Town of the Year Celebrations. The Championship is an official event on the NAGU Calendar with Merit points on offer to those vying for a place in the Namibian Team. Play commenced at 7.00 am on Saturday morning – weather conditions were a bit heavy – with the humidity also climbing during the course of the day. Gabriel Shikodi carded a 69 gross for his first 18 holes – but battled to keep up the pressure shooting a disappointing 2nd round of 80 gross whilst Defending Champion Stanley Gawanab, Grant Mather and Likius Nande were hanging in there. Things were pretty close at the end of Round 2 with Gabriel still in the lead by one shot over Likuis and Stanley on 150 and Grant on 151. In the “B” Division Fanie Terblanche held a one shot lead on 165 over Willie van Zyl and Rudi Auseb, whilst Tsumeb Junior Kyle Johnson was running away with the “C “ Division sporting a 10 shot lead over his nearest rival. Sunday morning play commenced around 8 o'clock with more or less the same weather conditions – things were neck and neck in the last four- ball with Likius running out the winner by one. President of NAGU Marco Swarts thanked Distell for their continuous support of Golf throughout Namibia; he thanked Rossmund Golf Course for the use of the course and also the staff

for all their hard work and effort that went into preparing it for the tournament. He had a special word of thanks for the RGC Committee for ensuring that the tournament ran smoothly. He also made mention that he was impressed to see some new names coming through the ranks. Sponsors representative Karien Siemens said she was delighted to be a part of the tournament and thanked all the players for taking part. She confirmed that Distell were committed to supporting golf throughout Namibia and looks forward to the 2020 season. Walvis Bay Radio Flyers in action Rudi Bowe

Walvis Bay Radio Flyers hosted a fun day for young and old at the Frank Harris mini aerodrome, situated about 20km from Walvis Bay on the D1983 (Rooibank) road over the weekend. It was another awesome day at the airfield with about 20 r/c enthusiasts pitching for the event. R/c planes filled the sky and the spirit of friendship and common interests added to the spirit. The interim-spokesperson of the Walvis Bay Radio Flyers, Mr. Jannie Theron, explained they started a few years ago with about 20 r/c flyers. At the time there was also a huge interest in r/c flying in Okahandja and Windhoek with many enthusiasts building their own planes. The club goes from strength to strength and gathers regularly. Theron further confirmed those interested in r/c flying as a hobby can now purchase radio control aircraft and accessories from The Hobby Shop Walvis Bay. There will be few more radio control model aircraft shows in 2020 and all are welcome to attend. The events will all be at the Frank Harris mini aerodrome. Interested persons can contact Jannie Theron at 081 124 0884. Flyers will assist training new entrants and help you hone your r/c flying skills. Some of the flyers who strutted their stuff over the weekend was Pieter Loubser, Jaco Rautenbach, David Visser, Johan Schoombee, JP Jooné, Kubi Kubirske and Jannie Theron.

Cricket Namibia First Ever Road show Success Story Cricket Namibia had it's first-ever road show and visited Okahandja, Otjiwarongo, Outjo, Keetmanshoop, Rehoboth, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay. It was a good initiative to introduce the game of cricket to the Namibian people. Cricket Namibia has the vision to grow the game of cricket in Namibia in order to support successful performance on an international level and for cricket to be one of the preferred professions in Namibia. The National cricket team players and coaching staff played a big role during the road show and inspired many young children, especially following their success of qualifying for the 2020 T20 World Cup. The aim of the road show was to create awareness of the game of cricket in Namibia and to increase the number of games played at school level to increase the number of cricket players. During the road show; 994 children were introduced to the game of cricket and were coached by the National players, 67 coaches were trained 26 scorers developed, had meetings with 37 school representatives, meetings with 22 club representatives, 11 schools committed to participating in the FNB Kwata cricket program (mini cricket) and Cricket Namibia donated four portable pitches to different schools during the road show. Marrssen Primary School, Gobabis Gymnasium Primary School, Walvis Bay Primary School, and Walvis Bay Private High School received portable pitches. Cricket Namibia has written its own coaching manual and this will enable teachers and potential coaches to learn how to coach and will spread the awareness of the game. Oschenwagen Guesthouse and Village Boutiques Hotel sponsored with accommodation and made the road show a great experience for everyone. Thank you for being part of this journey to grow our game in Namibia!
