Family attacked in their home as husband was on Neighbourhood Watch Sharlien Tjambari A woman was held at gunpoint and stabbed in the leg during an attack in her home in Mondesa in Swakopmund over the weekend. The attack formed part of a spate of eleven housebreakings that were recorded in Mondesa on Friday and Saturday. What aggravates the matter is the fact the victim's husband is a member of the Swakopmund Community Against Crime (SCAC) and was taking part in anti-crime patrols with the Namibian Police when his wife was attacked in their home. This SCACH member's identity is withheld on account of the protection of his family. He explai-

ned he received a frantic call from his wife at exactly 01:50 on Saturday informing him that there was someone in their house. He rushed home. "As I arrived at my home, I saw a man leaving my house. When he saw me he pointed a pistol to me. I could see how he squeezed the trigger, but miraculously the gun did not fire. The man started running and I gave chase, but he managed to escape", it was explained. When he entered his

home, he found his wife's cell phone and their television was missing. According to him, his daughter fell asleep in the living room after watching television. The intruders broke open a gate in the back yard. She was woken by the noise and went to her mother to inform her there was someone on their property. "Everything happened so fast", the wife told namib times this week. She was busy making a

Haufiku admitted yesterday much still has to be done to enhance the service delivery capacity of his Ministry in the Erongo Region. Dozens of patients are transported almost daily by bus from towns in the Erongo Region to Windhoek for doctors appointments. Mostly for minor medical conditions simply because the regional capacity for state medical care in Erongo is not developed to its full potential. Dr Haufiku made these remarks this week in Swakopmund when he briefed health staff at the Ministry of Health and Social Service's headquarters. "Everyday, busses transfer patients to

Windhoek. Many of the cases are very small cases, which means capacity at the district level is not yet strong", explained Dr Haufiku. Dr Haufiku stressed the importance of medical outreach and

said more will be done to increase outreach to Erongo. "Medical outreach is very important, as it provides an opportunity for medical staff to learn from the experienced doctors". Continues on Page 2

Health Minister cautions medical staff - improve the ways you deal with the Continued from page 1 public Haufiku also encouaged medical staff members to strengthen their interaction and levels of proficiency in communication, especially when dealing with family members

of someone who is in a critical condition. "Inform them of the situation and what to expect. "What counts is how much you care and not how much you know", he cautioned.

During his visit, that ended yesterday, Dr Haufiku also visited the Swakopmund State Hospital as well as the Walvis Bay State Hospital.

Family attacked Continued from page 1 call to her husband informing him of the situation, but the next moment the thugs were in the house. A man held a gun to her head. They kept on asking where the money was and warned the woman and her daughter to be quiet. It was during these moments she was stabbed in the leg with a sharp object. After their ordeal they established the thugs gained entry into their home by breaking open the front door. The victims believe that the thugs breaking into houses in Swakopmund are residents of other towns. They arrive in Swakopmund late at night, carry out the burglaries and attacks and swiftly return to their home towns. The victims called upon the public of Swakopmund to make their homes safe, as these criminals are skilled, merciless and would not hesitate to hurt any person who comes in the way when they steal your hard earned belongings. Notice: A security system should not consist of a single device like an alarm system only. It should be a system as in various devices that can deter housebreakers and house robbers. These include properly locked gates; outside beams on the premises, burglar bars (especially to aluminium windows and doors as the frames can easily be manipulated to remove the glass panels) and an alarm system that can detect movement in the home. It is also advisable if you have dogs to have the pets sleep inside, as they too can detect intruders before it is too late.

the local authority was not informed and that this caused local authority politicians an embarrassment. The information they had at hand was what was published in namib times. The reason for this communication "blackout" was laid directly at the door of the Namibia Development Corporation (NDC) and also the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI). The NDC's public relations department could have exercised better diplomacy and protocol by introducing the project to the local authority first, before going national with the news. Despite several attempts, the public relations unit of the Namibia Development Corporation could not be reached for comment. Equally, the NCCI Walvis Bay has progressively lost its position in recent years as the representative of local commerce and industry. In earlier years the NCCI was among the first local agencies approached when investors were interested in Walvis Bay. In this instance the NCCI Walvis Bay was also criticised this week by business people. Not only for the latest instance in which it has no knowledge of new investments in Walvis Bay, but also the NCCI Walvis Bay's silence in recent years on pressing problems in the harbour town like the central business district running empty on the back of the development of Dunes Mall and other shortcomings influencing local businesses. A member of the NCCI whose name is withheld as he was not prepared to make any statement on behalf of the Chamber as a whole admitted there was a lot that needed to be done to re-establish the NCCI Walvis Bay in its former role. ∙The vehicle assembly plant will assemble semi-knockdown Opel and Peugeot vehicles, imported through the port of Walvis Bay from France. The vehicles are all right hand drive and aimed at the SADC market. The production target is 5000 vehicles by 2020. The owner of the project is PSI Groupe that recently purchased the Opel brand from General Motors. PSI already owned Peugeot at the time of the acquisition of Opel.

Leading brand shops at the coast join fight against listeriosis All leading brand supermarkets in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Henties Bay confirmed this week that in line with an official request by the Ministry of Health and Social Services, all products identified as posing a listeriosis risk were removed from the shelves. The health departments of all three towns are closely involved in the process. Following an outbreak of listerosis in South Africa, which killed some 180 people and leaving hundreds, severely ill, the Namibian authorities decided to subsequently ban the import of high risk food commodities identified as having caused the outbreak. These include products from Rainbow Chicken and Enterprise Foods Ltd. The consumer food products targeted include all polonies, "russians", "frankfurters", "viennas", all types of ham, salami's, sausage spreads and luncheon rolls. It was reported this week a man from Tsumeb contracted listeriosis when he ate a Vienna sausage he bought from a local butchery. At the time

of going to press the man was fighting for his life in a Windhoek medical facility. What is Listeriosis? Listeriosis is an infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria may infect many different sites in the body, such as the brain, spinal cord membranes or the bloodstream. There are several food types known to cause listeriosis infection: processed meats, cheese and both pasteurised and unpasteurised milk. In the event of an outbreak of this deadly disease, close attention needs to be paid to the national and local health authorities, as they identify the high risk food items that need to be removed from shop shelves. (see above).

What are the symptoms? The symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes nausea or diarrhoea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur. But infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flulike illness. How are Namibian products affected? No Namibian food products have been ordered from shop shelves. The food items identified so far as high risk and subsequently removed are South African products notably from Rainbow and from Enterprise.

Heavy lift operation off Walvis Bay The heavy lift vessel Xian he Kou is expected off Walvis Bay on 26 March, to load a work boat of China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC). CHEC is currently constructing the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay as well as the bulk liquid fuel terminal north of Walvis Bay for the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Marine construction vessels used by CHEC are transported between China and Namibia by heavy lift vessel. Xian he Kou is currently sailing for Abidjan in the Ivory Coast to load vessels and will call at Walvis Bay on her return leg to load the vessel belonging to CHEC. Xian he Kou is equipped with gigantic ballast tanks. By flooding these ballast tanks with sea-

water, the vessel partially submerges. In doing so, she lowers her cargo deck to a specified depth below the water surface. It enables the boat, which she is to load, to float onto her cargo deck. Once secured onto the cargo deck, Xian he Kou empties her ballast tanks and the vessel is re-floated, lifting her cargo clear from the water. A sequence of pictures sourced online explains the process graphically.

A vehicle coming from the direction of Sam Nujoma Drive down 9th Road collided with the taxi. The force of the collision resulted in the taxi catapulted onto the pavement into a tree. The other vehicle involved in the collision spun out of control and hit a third vehicle which was stationary at the red traffic light at the moment of the collision.

SPS Grade 7's learners learn the correct handling of Namibia’s national flag Sharlien Tjambari

The Grade 7's of the Swakopmund Primary School (SPS) this week learned the correct procedures when it comes to handling the Namibian flag. The session is the initiative of the Learner Representative Council (LRC) and the Swakopmund Correctional Facility gladly assisted. Senior Supt Erwin Axakhoeb, of the Swakopmund Correctional Facility, explained the Namibian Flag is a national symbol and demands respect. "It represents the country on the international stage and should therefore be treated with the necessary respect. Whenever a national

flag is hoisted or lowered everyone is required to stand still and at attention", explained Axakhoeb to the children. According to him, the flag should always fly at full-mast, unless there is a special instruction issued by the Office of the President to fly the flag at halfmast. That would be in

the event of the country in mourning for instance. The flag should never touch the ground when hoisted or lowered and may only be flown between sunrise and sunset. When not flying, the flag should be kept in a safe and clean place, as a dirty or ragged flag is not desirable for our

country's national pride. Mrs Williams, a teacher at SPS, spoke on behalf of the LRC. She explained the Swakopmund Correctional Facility is part of Nami-

bia's uniformed public personnel and would be among the most appropriate to properly explain the procedures when it comes to handling the Namibian flag.

The session was very informative, she added. Learners asked questions and some of the questions included how to become a correctional officer.

Senior Supt Axakhoeb said Correctional Services will be going to other schools as well, to educate the learners on the proper handling of the national flag.

Swakopmund Correctional Facility members showed the learners the full procedure of hoisting and lowering the national flag, including how to march to the flagpole.

More help for shack fire victims

Among the people who went to hand over the items to the Mayor were: Adolph and Getrud Goagoses, the Founders of Granite Old Crocs netball team, Bianca Gontes, Petronella Uiras, Habasen Gurirab, Maleagi Hange and Obed Kandorozu as well as the mayor of Swakopmund Paulina Nashilundo and the Fire Brigade Chief, Adri Goosen. Sharlien Tjambari

Swakopmund is one of the most affected towns when it comes to shack fires. This year between January and March, four shack fires occurred. In all cases, the occupants of these shacks lost all their belongings. Thanks to initiatives like that of the Granite Old Crocks netball team who collects basic items to assist these fire victims the situation is somewhat alleviated. These items include clothing, shoes, bedding and blankets. The collected items were handed over to the Swakopmund Municipality on Tues-day and will be distributed to fire victims when a need arises. In receiving the items on behalf of the Swakopmund local authority council, the Mayor of Swakopmund, Clr. Pauline Nashilundo said: "We are all aware that we have informal settlements in Swakopmund and that they are susceptible to fire.

Lives and property are frequently lost. I would like to express my gratitude to the Granite Old Crocks Netball Team for showing that they care for our community. These items we will be handed over to the Fire Brigade's Chief Adri Goosen, who is in charge of the distribution of aid to fire victims". One of the founding members of the Granite Old Crocks netball team, Adolf Goagoseb explains one of their main objectives is to assist the community in whichever way they can. "It is part of our duty to fulfill that objective by giving such donations towards the community", said Goagoseb. Adding there are more projects ongoing at the moment.

It is further to benefit NCS staff by enhancing their well-being by being active and outdoors and it also builds team spirit and a purpose of belonging. The event started at the Swakopmund Prison to the NamPower building on the C34 road and again back to the starting point. Axakhoeb explained the event will be hosted annually. Adding other Government ministries and even private sector institutions to take part in this. The event is also open to the families of all staff.

The time is now for disabled women in Namibia These were the words of Mr Elia Shapwe, Acting Secretary General of the National Federation of People with Disabilities in Namibia (NDPDN), at the first day of the event which was hosted on 14 March.

Women with disabilities ranging from deaf, visually impaired to physical disabilities attend the event to address the problems they face and share encouraging and motivating

stories and performances. Ms Hileni Uulumbu, Councilor from the City of Windhoek, said that it is important for the women with disabilities to have a woman's day separate to the official

International Day of Women, which is held on 8 March every year, so that the focus can fall on them and the unique challenges they face. Deaf women are victimised by criminals because sign language

makes reporting all the details very difficult while albinos are regularly called derogatory names. According to Miriam Sam (NADAWO) women with disabilities are commonly mistreated. The Time is Now! is the theme for 2018 and it calls for disabled women to take their life into their own hands and make a difference to their own lives while setting an example for other. Some of the highlights of the performances were the “singing of the National Anthem in sign language and a

Successful clean-up Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF) and Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) hosted a clean-up campaign between Uis and Twyvelfontein from 1 - 3 March. The aim of the clean-up was to create awareness on the importance of black rhino conservation in Namibia. This campaign brought together 21 youth boys and girls from Khorixas, Fransfontein and Uis to create awareness as we continue the development of our national rhino conservation programmes to ensure we are making the best possible effort to reduce or stop rhino poaching in the region. Black rhinos are critically endangered with a global population estimate at approximately 5 000. The NNF and SRT are

supporting a youth group clean-up campaign in an area adjacent to the West Kunene Black Rhino (WKBR) range. The WKBR is internationally recognised by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's African Rhino Specialist Group as a Key 1 population and specially protected species in Namibia. The WKBR is also an important source of local income with rhino tourism that is directly contributed over N$2 500 000 to local com-

munities in 2017 and indirectly contributes much more as a national tourism attraction. Ensuring this population is secure, particularly against the current poaching pressure, is thus paramount. The clean-up campaign was a pilot activity, focused on constructively engaging unemployed and marginalised youth in conservancy areas to proactively support rhino conservation. The idea is to build community resilience against poaching

through positive messaging around potential benefits from black rhino as well as negative impacts of criminal elements operating in com-

munal areas. These communities are generally unaware of the critical population status of Black Rhinos. The aim of the campaign

is to educate communities and encourage them to realise that they can play a vital and positive role in the protection and survival of this species. This need to be done before professional rhino poaching occurs in other areas and the successful conservation efforts of the last 10 years disappears. By raising awareness it is hoped that the communities will be less likely to accommodate

rhino poachers and more likely to pass on information about suspected rhino poachers to authorities. The clean-up campaign is motivated by the intensifying crisis in rhino conservation. The Campaign is focused on critically endangered species of the Black rhino with the goal of reinforcing protection measures and expanding rhino populations and ranges.

First Dirt Oval Championships The first leg of the 2018 Dirt Oval Championships was recently held at the Desert Raceway Dirt Oval Racetrack in Walvis Bay. The host of the event was the Walvis Bay Motor Club and Desert Raceway with more than 300 racing enthusiasts in attendance to see who will be the winners of the first leg of the dirt oval in the different classes.

Excitement was an understatement for the spectators as all entrants were in top form with their modified vehicles. In an all-out battle for the chequered flag in the V8s, 16-valve Hot Rods, fourcylinder, and the quads bike classes. At the start of the day the battle in the V8 class was on between Gert Breedt, Robby Schneider and Richard Owen at the end of the day it was the driving skills of Gert Breedt taking the chequered flag in the first two heats and Richard Owen who did not finish the first head and did not start the second head but took the chequered flag in heads three and four. At the end Gert Breedt won the V8 class with Robby Schneider second and Richard Owen in the thrird place of the day.

Allan Martin was in a world of his own as he amazed the young and old with his "never say die" racing style in his 16-valve Hot Rod. At the end of every race he took the chequered flag. Frank Borruso was second and Freddy Stander in third place. Jan Everson did not take part in the first leg as he still has problems with his car. Zachery Martin the son of Allen Martin and young schoolboy from Walvis Bay came second in the 4cylinder class. In first place was Frank Borruso and Pieter Human was third. Jos Dekmon won the quad bike class with Brandon Botelho second and Stefan Borruso third. The next oval will be 28 April in Otjiwarongo and the Easter Drags is on for 31 March.
