Pilot admits falling asleep at her aircraft’s controls Piquet Jacobs

The pilot who recently executed an emergency landing with a Cessna 210 (V5-JET) owned by Scenic Air, reportedly admitted to air accident investigators she fell asleep behind the controls leading to this latest air incident. The pilot was identified as Shannon Duff. The pilot's admission followed after the Deputy Director of Aircraft Accident Investigation, Theo Shilongo, had second thoughts after not finding Duff's initial version of events credible. Duff made an emergency landing just after 15:00 on 5 August this year north of Henties Bay. The plane took off from the airstrip at Doro Nawas Camp in Damaraland, close to Twyfelfontein, head-

ing for Swakopmund. According to the pilot, Shannon Duff, she heard a “loud bang” and the propeller stopped. She then attempted to restart the engine and eventually managed to get the engine going again. There was no power to control the pitch, which is why she sent out a “May-Day” distress call and took the decision to make an emergency landing. The pilot climbed on a hilltop after the emergency landing, where she lit a fire to attract

attention. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, but no injuries were reported. “After investigating the aircraft, it became apparent that the aircraft impacted the ground with its propeller first and only then the belly of the aircraft. The aircraft lifted and only then the landing gear deployed. The investigating team also found that the true impact spot was not near where the pilot

Shannon Duff initially indicated. When we started asking questions again, as I was not happy with the initial answers she

provided, she said she could not remember much. It was only after I continued questioning her

when she admitted she had fallen asleep behind the controls,” Shilongo commented on the new findings.

Floris Steenkamp The Namibian fishing sector earned an estimated N$10 billion in revenues from the landings of 550 000 metric tons of fish in the 2014/15 fishing year. In addition the industry provided 15 000 direct jobs over the same period and sustained a further 45 000 indirect jobs in supplies to fishing vessels, stevedoring activities, logistics and other related marketing and trade activities. Simultaneously, Government revenues from taxes, levies and tariffs also increased. Many victims of recent shack fires in Swakopmund received various valuables on Friday afternoon which were donated by the Office of the Mayor. The items included blankets, clothes, cutlery, food hampers and much more and were collected by various community members from Swakopmund and Walvis Bay over the past few weeks. Some businesses also collected items which were donated to the municipality and now handed over. “We received a great deal of clothes and other items after the recent shack fires,” said Swakopmund Fire Chief Adri Goosen to namib times. In July close to 40 shacks burned down during various fires in Swakopmund. The items were handed over to some of the victims by the newly elected Junior Town Council at the fire brigade. Very grateful: Emily Meroro received some valuables including clothes, which were donated to the Office of the Mayor and handed over on Friday. Emily lost all her belongings in a shack fire recently.

Chinese accused of robbing fellow Chinese Erwin Leuschner

In a presumably unprecedented event in Walvis Bay on Friday a Chinese businessman and one of his employees allegedly robbed another Chinese national – after forcing him to sign a document and shooting at him. The police arrested the two suspects who have been charged with attempted murder, robbery, extortion and malicious damage to property. The incident was confirmed to namib times yesterday by Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in Walvis Bay. According to Iikuyu the incident occurred on Friday at about 11:00 in the morning. It is alleged that the two Chinese nationals, one being a businessman and the owner of XYZ Customs Clearing and Transport Services and the other being an employee, called the victim, Li Cheng, and requested him to visit their office in the harbour town. The office is situated in the new industrial area. When Cheng arrived at the office the two Chinese allegedly forced him to sign a document stating that he, the victim, owes the company N$8 million. “That can be regarded as extortion,” Iikuyu said. After Cheng refused to sign the document one of the two suspects allegedly pulled out a gun and shot at the victim three times. Miraculously Cheng wasn't injured. “We are not yet sure exactly what happened. Cheng remained unhurt,” The Detective Inspector continued saying. The victim thereafter signed the document, after which the two suspects robbed him of his mobile phone. It is then alleged that the two suspects “damaged” the phone before driving out into the dunes close to Walvis Bay where they buried it. They then released Cheng, who immediately opened a case at the police. “Cheng also owns a Customs Clearing Company and we are still trying to establish a motive for the incident. Both the suspect (the businessman) and the victim are in the same line of business,” Iikuyu continued saying. The police was in the meantime able to recover the stolen phone. The first suspect, the employee at XYZ Liu Lianxing (30), was arrested on Friday and appeared in the Magistrates Court in Walvis Bay yesterday. He was denied bail. The owner of the company XYZ handed himself over to the police yesterday and was arrested accordingly. He is set to make his first appearance in court today.

Shoprite employees nabbed Erwin Leuschner for cash theft Three employees of the supermarket U-save Shoprite in Mondesa were arrested after allegedly stealing cash to the value of more than N$10 000. This was confirmed to namib times by various anonymous sources. According to information received by the newspaper two arrests were conducted over the weekend with a third suspect being apprehended yesterday. More details about the exact incident are sketchy at this stage. Detective Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in Walvis Bay yesterday confirmed that a case had been opened at the police on 8 August. When namib times visited Shoprite in town in Swakopmund the incident of theft was confirmed, but the newspaper was referred to the shop in Mondesa. When approached the manager of U-save Shoprite declined to comment and merely said that “people from the (Shoprite) head office in Windhoek are on their way to Swakopmund to investigate the matter.” The manager at U-save in Mondesa declined to give any further information, nor did she wish to reveal her name to the newspaper. “I cannot say anything about this matter. We cannot say anything at this stage,” she said.

Only one “Musketeer”left after poisoning Erwin Leuschner

Three of the four remaining world famous “Vanishing Kings” desert lions were savagely poisoned and their carcasses burned. The remaining lion “Xpl-93”, also known as “Tullamore”, is now the last remaining Musketeer. He was relocated to the Skeleton Coast, where he will be given the chance to live a safe and formidable life. The news of the tragic incident once again spread like wildfire across the country on World Lion Day on Wednesday this week. The burned carcasses of the three lions were found near Tomakas in the Kunene Region on Tuesday. The carcasses and their collars were burned after the three brothers were poisoned by individuals not yet identified. The initial five male lions, who are about four years old now, were named “Five

Musketeers” and received world-fame through the documentary “Vanishing Kings – Lions of the Namib”. After an escalating humanwildlife conflict since the end of 2015 in the Region the desert lion “Harry” (Xpl-89) was shot and killed in the Purros Conservancy in June this year. Two months later only one Musketeer remains. According to the Desert Lion Foundation the four remaining males kept coming back to the area, “perhaps to look for their dead brother,

perhaps to continue their successful hunting on giraffe that populate this area, or perhaps for the livestock that sometimes roams freely at night and makes for easy prey.” Shortly before the tragic incident the complex decision had been made by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to relocate the four male lions to the Skeleton Coast Park where they would have a future. “This major translocation was just days away from happening, as we were just waiting for the three

males to reconnect with their brother who had been elsewhere. But they never got the chance to get together again. The three male lions ventured close to another cattle-post and were poisoned,” the Foundation states;

and: “We hope that this tragic event will not overshadow what all the people on the ground (on government level included) have achieved so far.” The documentary “Vanishing Kings – Lions of the Namib”

was filmed by Will and Lianne Steenkamp who spent nearly two years filming. It tells the story of an old lioness, her two daughters and their five adolescent sons, known as the “Five Musketeers”. It also

focuses on the efforts of Dr. Stander, who has devoted his life to researching and protecting these rare and precious animals. The documentary garnered world fame and inspired greater conservations efforts.

Tourism conference a roadmap for tourism development in Swakopmund Sharlien Tjambari The recent conference on tourism growth and development in Swakopmund was very successful and can form a basis for further development of this sector in and around Swakopmund. This was now underlined in a final report compiled after the conference was held in July this year. That Swakopmund has an enormous untouched tourism potential is once again reiterated in the final report published after the recent, successful local conference on tourism growth and development. To truly tap this potential urgent action is necessary to implement the tourism growth strategy, which was compiled by the independent consultant DECOSA in 2015. The strategy was officially launched in May by Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, Tommy Nambahu. To grow the tourism sector and to reach its potential two new committees were formed. “It was agreed that the police and the “Neighborhood Watch” intensify their co-operation and a Crime Prevention Committee shall be created and organized by the Municipality,” it states in the report. Eleven members were selected: Rauna Shipunda (Municipality of Swakopmund), Rafael Litota (NAMPOL Tourism Protection Unit), Rosa Tjihavero Rosa (NAMPOL Tourism Protection Unit), Appolus Motinga (Municipal Traffic Officer), Hansen A E Gaes (Ministry of Health & Social Welfare), Gerson Katupose (Ministry of Fisheries & Marine Resources), Augustinus Kahiri (Ministry of Fisheries & Marine Resources), Annet Kötting (Hotel Manager), Peter Van Ginkel (Activity Provider (CTAN), Ismael Nawaseb (Cultural Tourism Business) and Atelma Thanises (Social Worker). According to the final report Swakopmund lacks police officers. This sad reality is explained due to the high costs of accommodation in the town. “The police has several open jobs but cannot find officers,” the report states; and continues: “The most important issue for the business community was safety and security. It was agreed that this issue is essential for tourism, because negative cases affecting internationals tourists will be reported world-wide.” At the same event the option of a

City Police was discussed, but that is “not realistic due to the extremely high cost.” To successfully implement the recommendations of the strategy all delegates at the conference agreed that a body for this purpose be created. A Tourism Forum was therefore created. “Remarkably, some members of the Forum were already nominated during the conference,” it states. The members are: Rauna Shipunda (Municipality of Swakopmund), Ambambi Kaagwana (Ministry of Environment and Tourism), Anett Kötting (Hotel Zum Kaizer), Heidi Snyman (Hotel Schweizerhaus/Café Anton), Ismael Nawaseb (Kazak African Experience Cultural Tourism), Gerald Kolb (Charly's Desert Tours's), Georg Erb (Swakop Tour Company), Weltrid Beatle Gertze (Swakop Cycle Tours), Michael Haus (Power House; Tourism Retail), Michelle \\Inixas (COSDEF Arts & Crafts Centre), Nadine Kohlstadt (Scientific Society Swakopmund), Xenia Ivanoff-Erb (Xenia Graphic Design and Brand Management) and a representative from the Namibia Tourism Board. The most important outcome of the conference includes the goal that the tourism sector in Swakopmund shall be further developed in co-operation with private and public stakeholders. While it states in the report that the nomination of members for both committees is commendable, it is however regrettable, that established businesses “are underrepresented in the Crime Prevention Committee in contrast to the Tourism Forum.” According to the report 77 delegates from various sectors were present which exceeded all expectations. “The Erongo Regional Council was only represented by one councilor, but by no professional staff member. This is regrettable since the Region shall be involved in the tourism development of Swakopmund (…),” it states in the report.

Colour Festival returns to Swakopmund Erwin Leuschner The successful Colour Festival, which was hosted in December 2013 at the Vineta Sport Field in Swakopmund, might once again take place this year. Town Council approved a request by Mammoth Events Management at its most recent meeting, to host such an open air music festival. Should everything fall into place the Colour Festival will take on 30 December between 10:00 and 22:00. This date and the times were n o w ap p r o v ed b y Council. Reason being that “the Municipality put in place strict conditions and guidelines to allow the successful hosting o this event.” Colour Festivals have steadily grown in popularity around the globe especially over the past few years. Attendees can usually buy various different colour powders to throw into the air or each other. The last festival of this nature hosted at the coast took place in 2013 and attracted a crowd con-

sisting of more than 7800 people. This figure was revealed by Mammoth Events in their initial application to Council in June this year. According to the Agenda of the recent meeting the festival is described as an event that “brings together thousands of people, dressed in white, to share music, dance, performance art and stimulation.” “This type of event uses high-powered sound systems that produce excessive sound and vibration which can cause frustrations among some residents especially those living in the vicinity of the sportfield,” it states. In order

for Council to balance the need of the industry and that of the residents, it is essential that strict guidelines be put in place. Even though the event is hosted by a private entity, Council will ultimately also gain a significant profit from the festival. Besides charging a rental fee for the venue including a deposit to the value of N$23 000, Council decided that 10% of the profit of the ticket sales will also go to Council. Furthermore Council will receive 100% of the income generated by vendor stand and stall stand fees as well as 10% of the profit made through the sale of colour powder.

Shack Dwellers partners with local authorities Sharlien Tjambari The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) and Namibia Housing Action Group (NHAG) had a workshop on Thursday, 11 August with members of local authorities from various towns in Erongo region to share experiences and map the way forward. The workshop started with a side visit to the area where the council allocated land for the shack dwellers in Swakopmund between DRC and Mondesa. According to Mr Heinrich Amushila the Regional Co-ordinator of NHAG said the main purpose of the workshop was to explore ways of scaling up community servicing land and also share skills and to look for ways in which the federation can work hand in hand and to build a partnership with the local authorities so that every member of the federation can live in a proper house. The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia have members all over Namibia, in Erongo there are about 3028 members divided into 116 different groups. The members have a general saving N$2.2 million and have saved N$236 610-95 from January to June this year. According to Statistics provided by Mr Naftal Uutoni the Erongo Region Saving Facilitator and SDFN Walvis Bay Chairperson, Walvis Bay have a total number of 2357 members who are still living in shacks and only 148 members of the federation received houses since the beginning of the project. The general land saving money is currently at N$2.3 million dollars, Uutoni said that most of the federation's members in Walvis Bay have left the group because of waiting for too long to get land. The Federation will be building about 36 houses in Swakopmund, 26 in Omaruru and 20 in Usakos as well. Amushila also said that there are 66 beneficiaries in Swakopmund and once more land is available more people will benefit since there are about 200 members awaiting for land in Swakopmund. According to Amushila the SDFN can mobilize communities to form groups, develop partnership with local and regional authorities for peoples based development, offer service installation where there is bulk services through community training, they can also offer low quality houses, construction man-aged by members and offer water payment management. However many of the beneficiaries who got houses and are living in these houses complained about the lack of water and sewerage facilities as there is one tap for more than 20 houses in each town of Erongo. The beneficiaries pleaded with the federation to assist them with these facilities. Speaking on behalf of the Governor of Erongo Region, the Special advisor to the Governor Mrs Bobby Adelheid Kandjala said she would like to encourage the federation to expand the programme and to share the benefits with other disadvantaged communities in all corners of the country “to successfully address the escalating demands of the community we need efforts such as these displayed by the shack dwellers federation, along with partners involving the government, the private sector and the NGO community” Kandjala adds. In order to qualify for the SDFN membership one need to be under the low income group, you must not own a house or land and you must be poor said Amushila. Amushila further said that the Shack Dwellers Federation is the only organisation in Namibia that build low cost housing for the community and he advised that if there are people out there who would like to join the federation they must feel free if they wish to live in proper houses some day in the near future. Members of the federation have been digging holes, servicing land and building their own houses because they are dedicated and eager to move from shack into their beautiful homes. Since 2015 the Patron of the Shack Dwellers Federation is the first lady Madam Monica Geingos said Amushila.

Industries and businesses should never stop to develop and train Namibians The President of the Namibia National Labour Organisation Federation Mr. Evilastus Kaaronda said in Walvis Bay recently the training and development of Namibians to replace expatriate workers from outside the country must remain a priority. He made this remark at a press conference held by Elgin Brown Hamer Namibia (EBHN) on the retrenchment of 102 workers in the wake of close to 60 % drop in business since late 2015 attributed to the decline of the global oil market. As companies restructure to cope with economic hardship some values must always remain in the fabric of how industries conduct themselves and this include the perpetual training and development of human capital

Grave robbery in Kuiseb in 1884:

Attempt to trace of Swartbooi and Topnaar descendants of Jacobus Hendrick and Jacobus !Gariseb In early December 1884 the German scientist Waldemar Belck arrived in Walvis Bay with three skeletons in order to ship them to Berlin. The scant information available tells us that he had robbed them from graves in the lower Kuiseb. They belonged to three men who had died on 30 March that year during a cattle raid by Herero at a place called //Kharabes close to Rooibank. A few weeks later the men had been buried by Kaptein Jan Jonker Afrikaner. Crematorium welcomed - SRA newsletter states

How very convenient that Swakopmund will soon gain its own crematorium – something, which is long overdue. We are told it will be placed next to the new cemetery towards the north side of Swakopmund. We trust that the municipality will consider the placement very carefully, as cemeteries should be treated with respect and consideration. In many towns throughout Africa and Namibia, cemeteries have become places of vandalism and danger and we do not wish this to be the case in Swakopmund. If one looks at the northern areas, we have the rubbish dumps, and the DRC area with its many settlers and common sense tells us that a burial place in this area, will be fraught with problems. We need to think carefully about this placement. Over the years a dreaded fungal disease has overtaken and killed many Fir trees in Swakopmund. As we drive around, so many gardens display a diseased or dead tree in the front garden and this is a shame. Can nothing be done to rid our lovely town of these eye-sores? Are we so blind to the appearance of our homes that we cannot remove these dead trees ourselves? Come on, Swakopmunders! Once again a main pillar at the entrance to the library has been knocked over by a vehicle obviously too large to manoeuvre through the space allowed. We hope that this pillar will soon be repaired and that wisdom will prevail so that the new pillar is set further to the side so that this does not happen a third time. If large vehicles are going to use the road leading to the back of the library, then the pillars must be adjusted accordingly. It is that simple. And on the subject of the library, complaints are heard about the very restricted libraryopening times - long breaks of closure too often in the year for inadequate reasons, no Saturday morning opening hours, no lunch-time access. No wonder we are a nation of non-readers, when reading is not supported in any way. And lastly – who is the person with a distinctive number plate who thinks that the area directly in front of the library steps is a personal parking place? Traffic officials, please take note! Congratulations to our municipality for continuing with its winning design scheme for the new municipal building, by constructing a rock garden at its front. Not only does this off-set the new municipal building very well, but it sends a message of conservation to us all, in these times of drought and water conservation. Well done to all who played a part in this decision. A complaint has been made regarding the shabby and unoccupied buildings which used to house Coastal Couriers and a venue known as “Paradise Lounge.” These buildings are now being used by street children and vagrants, who cause problems for nearby residents. Lastly, an appeal. The Namib Primary School was once a proud and attractive junior school, admired by many. It had a great reputation and was well regarded by many. These days the front of the school has a neglected and sad appearance and is not at all attractive. The appealing little bell-tower is also in need of urgent repair and attention and we hope that the board members of the school take the front appearance of the school in hand, and that a benefactor is found who would be prepared to repair and save the small bell tower, which is a little

Swakopmund treasure, so that it can continue to stand with pride. Some time ago we made an appeal for the repair of the monument at the front of the jetty to be repaired and KWE – now Kraatz Marine from Walvis Bay stepped up and did the restoration work, and added a new dedication plate for which we remain thankful. We sincerely hope that a similar rescue bid will be forthcoming for the bell tower from a business which cares. We are glad to see all the low-income houses which are being built along the by-pass road to the north of Swakopmund giving more and more people the chance to live dignified lives. We hope that our municipality is ensuring that these houses are affordable and that they will not be turned into the chaos which is seen in Mondesa, with many shacks crowded onto every property. Walvis Bay's municipality has set a great precedent with this, and we trust our municipality will do the same. Swakopmunders – please take pride in our lovely town. Our quality of life is maintained by what we do, not by what we say. Please do not litter, please follow our traffic laws, please respect our environment and give what you can to help your fellow man. Remember especially those who have lost everything they own because of shack fires. They need our help.

sions. Once back in Berlin, his anthropometric data and the three skeletons were “scientifically” discussed amongst physical anthropologists. Scientists in all European metropoles had embarked in the late 19th century on largescale “acquisitions” of human remains from around the world and also from pre-historic European grave sites. They argued that these “collections” and the accumulated anthropometric data (including descriptions of skin, eye colour and hair) formed a “necessary” basis for identifying “races” – an ideology deeply flawed with racist assumptions and implicated in the formation of a racialized hierarchy and ideology underpinning the colonial project. We came across the names and details of the three deceased men and the robbery of their remains from their grave(s) by Belck in publications of the Berlin institution holding their remains and in documents from various other archives. We believe that their descendants should be traced. Jacobus Hendrick is reported to have been the son-in-law of Samuel Gertze, himself a well

known Rhenish Mission preacher and personality at the time. Belck also mentioned Hendrick as having been a former school teacher in Otjimbingue, and being a member of the “Zwartbooi tribe.” Jacobus !Garisib is said to have been a cousin of Jacobus Hendrick and “possibly” also a “Zwartbooi.” Oantab is said to have been guarding the stock of Jacobus Hendrick, with no additional information on his background provided. No additional information on the individual biographies of these men seems to have survived in the archives. Jacobus Hendrick and his death was still remembered by people living in the lower Kuiseb in the 1960s. For example, in 1969 the Topnaar Voorman Jacobus Stevenson (“Argyll”) reported on the death of two “Hendrik brothers” at #Arexa!nanis, another name, it seems, for //Kharabes. Stevenson then also said that a sister of the brothers, Hanna Hendricks, was married to Nicolaas //Keiseb. We do hope that the historical biographical information provided here could trigger me-

mories and direct us in tracing any descendants of the men whose remains continue to be part of a scientific collection in Berlin instead of resting, as they already did, in Namibian soil. If you have any relevant information on the three men named here, on their descendants such as the daughter of Jacobus Hendrik, or his sister Hanna Hendricks, or with regard to the raiding incident in 1884, or on the local history of //Kharabes or #Arexa!nanis, please share it with us. Giant sinkhole in port A giant sinkhole measuring twenty metres by forty metres and estimated at 10 metres deep occurred in the port of Walvis Bay on Saturday, shutting down all operations at berth number 5 for the foreseeable future. An investigation revealed the sinkhole occurred after a part of the quay wall on the seafront collapsed. This caused sediment to flow from under the quay floor into the sea and the cavity that formed eventually collapsed to form the giant sinkhole. Alex Muukua Wow!!!!! Lily Taylor Interesting.

Coastal industries have steady oxygen supply in Kryo Namibia The consistent availability of industrial gases like oxygen is crucial to keep industries going. The coast's industries are no exception and Kryo Namibia, a local supplier of industrial gases, have distinguished itself the past year at the coast as a reliable supplier of oxygen to a wide variety of industrial clients. The company, a subsidiary of Kryo Investments Namibia, has been growing its market in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Henties Bay's consistently since the company's opening in mid-2015. Kryo Namibia is coowned by Mr Sam Beukes, the former Managing Director of the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor) and Stephen Viljoen a veteran stakeholder in industrial gas supply chain management in several African countries. Coastal Industrial gas consumers are often frustrated by shortages of oxygen, Acetylene, argon, nitrogen and carbon dioxide not readily available, due to the fact that these suppliers are reliant on a central industrial gas supply hub in South Africa. Not only does this make operational planning difficult but it affects consistency and customer service for these industrial gas consumers. In realising this shortcoming, Kryo Namibia established itself

in the coastal market in mid-2015. The company has its own oxygen compressing plant operational at Walvis Bay which can supply unlimited supplies of oxygen to industrial gas consumers consistent and in line with the volumes required. The company manages a reliable system which includes a large battery of cylinders that can be replaced continuously or tailor-made solutions for large volume consumers like the mines or heavy industries that requires large volumes of industrial gas. The company invites industrial gas consumers like engineering firms, salvage operators, marine industrial stakeholders, the mines and all other industrial operations requiring steady sup-

plies of industrial gases to assess the alternative now avail-able through Kryo Namibia. Whether your need for industrial gas supplies are project specific and therefore fluctuating, whether your need is calculated daily, weekly or monthly, whether you need volumes permanently and onsite, Kryo Namibia has

a supply chain and tailor-made options to satisfy in every need. The company has established a foothold in the local market for industrial oxygen supplies that will make an end to periodic unavailability and long delivery times. Speak to us today for a permanent solution. Also consult us for

other industrial gas needs like acetylene, argon, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. We are conveniently situated at the Tunacor site in 2nd Street East Walvis Bay. Please contact Marlene Grobler on 081 766 0273 or email her at : kryonamibia@gmail.c om.

Kickboxing says thank you to Nambrew

Frenchman ends Namibian boxer Jonas Junias’s 2016 Olympic dreams

We would like to thank NBL for your continuous support towards our club. With your help we have been able to give more students a chance to compete in world class competitions. With your support we have had a remarkable growth in successes. In 2014 the club sent 22 participants to Destiny, receiving 38 medals and 17 participants qualified to attend the NMA/ISKA US Open. In 2015 the club sent 30 participants to Destiny, receiving 52 medals and 21 participants qualified to attend the NMA/ISKA US Open. Next month 26 students will be touring to Stellenbosch, South Africa, to participate in this year's Destiny! Destiny is the biggest competition under the NMA/ISKA affiliation, hosted each year in the Western Cape and attracting the best of SA and overseas fighters. All at the top of their form and also ultimately competing for a place in the NMA/ISKA US Open.

The club's vision and ultimate goals are to be able to attract local children. To teach them that achievements are earned through hard work, dedication, respect, discipline and self confidence. This in turn also has a lasting impact on a student's life. Some of our club members have never been able to travel to SA and some have never even been to Windhoek. Thus making the trip so much more than just a sports dream come true (being able to fight against the best), but also giving them the opportunity to be able to travel and experience our country and the Western Cape. Seeing the excitement of the students is a feeling indescribable and the ultimate reward. Thank you NBL for being part of the student's journey in reaching their dreams.

Namibian Olympic boxer Jonas Junias's 2016 Olympic dream is shattered after he lost his opening fight against Frenchman Hassan Amzile in Rio on Thursday night. The boxer's defeat means the end of the road for him for this year's Olympic Games. For Junias this was the low point of the 2016 Olympic Games after he was arrested earlier on allegations of the sexual assault of a room attendant at the Olympic Village. Junias lost the boxing match with points and gave everything. Junias was released last week only hours before weighing in for the fight from Rio De Janeiro's notorious Bunga prison as Brazilian authorities were investigating the allegations of the sexual assault. In a separate, but similar incident at the athletes village, police arrested Moroccan boxer Hassan Saada, also 22, on suspicion of sexually assaulting two female cleaners. Saada is also out of the Games after his fight on Saturday was ruled a walkover.

Public Relations Officer at Namib Mills Ashante Manetti thanked the teams for participating. “The reason we do this as a company is that it is part of spending time with the community we operate from. It is also a chance to uplift our community and to bring the spirit of togetherness to the towns,” she said. Namib Mills is the corporate company under which Top Score falls. Tournament administrator Cynthia Balzar added that the next coastal tournament is expected to take place in September 2017. “We want to put it in September when it is a bit warmer, as you can see August is cold,” she said. Balzar also said suggestions that the tournament should take place at the Kuisebmond Sports Stadium, closer to the majority of the community, will be considered. More than16 teams from different companies participated in the tournament this year. (NAMPA)
