Floris Steenkamp The port of Walvis Bay will soon host a very special floating visitor: the super yacht Voyager which underwent a four year transformation from an offshore oil industry work boat to a floating luxury resort. The vessel was commissioned in 1997 as a work boat for the offshore oil industry. In 2003 the vessel’s name changed to Hos Trader and she continued to work as a n offshore supply ship. In January 2015 work began to transform (pictured above (also see picture on page 2)) the vessel into a super yacht that can undertake long offshore expeditions. Specifically to serve as a platform for deep sea exploration. The work included the redesign of her super structure and lengthening of the hull to 91,4 meters. A bathing platform and helicopter deck were added. The five-deck ship has guest rooms where no details were spared for luxury. The crew quarters can house a crew of up to 70 people. Other key features include multiple galleys from which passengers are served exquisite meals, pantries, media rooms and a deep-sea dive centre. After nearly five years of work, the yacht was finally ready to take it to the world’s oceans. Voyager Maritime Alliance Group (VMAG) conducted the work. VMAG takes pride in the fact that the Voyager project represents the biggest ever conversion from offshore supply vessel to super yacht in the history of ship building in the United States of America. The vessel is a true floating masterpiece and prospective passengers aboard can look forward to an excellent experience from the moment they board. ·The vessel’s call to the port of Walvis Bay is to take in new supplies.

Domestic dispute ends in suicide Eileen van der Schyff Mondesa, Swakopmund: after a failed attempt to stab her husband during a domestic dispute, a 30-year-old woman locked herself inside the toilet of their home this past Sunday and committed suicide by hanging. Victoria Hedelina Angustus informed her husband she is moving out of their common home. When the husband refused to give her some belongings, she picked up a kitchen knife and attempted to stab him. He managed to overpower her and took away the knife. Angustus then locked herself in the toilet and her husband went to sleep. When he woke up the toilet was still locked. He then phoned Angustus's sister who helped break open the toilet door. They found Angustus hanging. She was already dead.

Free Defensive Driving Training Session held by XCCS On Wednesday, 9 October 2019 Extreme Customs Clearing Services (XCCS) offered a free Defensive Driving Training session to 20 Members of the general public. XCCS staff members and the nominated attendees regarded this training to be very fruitful and helpful in aiding us to be responsible road users by doing our part to decrease the number of accidents and incidents happening on our Namibian National Roads. The main objective of this training session was to start educating the general public on road safety so that we can reduce incidents/ accidents on our roads. As a transporter of dangerous goods, we at XCCS hold the responsibility to ensure that we educate the public on general road safety and driving defensively. We play an important role in creating awareness among our Namibian road users (pedestrians and drivers) as our Bulk Vehicles (Fuel Tankers) are prominently making use of the Namibian roads daily. We are quite positive that this training session will contribute towards changing driver behaviour and ultimately save lives on our roads. We aim to have sessions like this regularly going forward. This was ascertained by the feedback from the participants. “The training will not just be for me as I will take what I have learned today and go share it with my family and friends”, said one of the participants. Another person said that “this training will surely have a domino effect as I will ensure to share what I have learned with everyone I know whilst advising them to take the message further”. The training was quite interactive as all participants were actively involved throughout the entire session. Topics covered in the training included, but were not limited, the following: · Road Crashes and

common driver errors /violations · Move your eyes while

PRESS RELEASE

13th Erongo Business And Tourism Expo 2019 DESPITE the mood of gloom and doom, gripping the nation because of the economic slowdown, the Erongo Business and Tourism Expo takes place later this month. Over the past 13 years, the event has become one of Namibia's leading expositions. Slated to take place in Namibia's port town of Walvis Bay from Wednesday 30 October to Saturday, 2 November, the exposition will again be a boost to the town's local economy. Other coastal towns will also derive benefit in terms of sales, business deals and accommodation for exhibitors. Many Walvis Bay enterprises stand to benefit again as the emphasis of the Erongo Business and Tourism Expo is on business and not overshadowed by entertainment. Erongo Business and Tourism Expo 2019 will spotlight local, regional and international business opportunities. Showcased will be the Erongo Region's splendour and beauty as well as its natural and marine resources and the town's excellent port facilities and different corridors connections of the port to land locked countries in the region. In this way, investment opportunities in Walvis Bay will be highlighted. With the support of the Walvis Bay Municipality, the event's venue is centrally located at the civic centre and there is no entrance fee. While the kids enjoy the children's playground facilities, parents have the opportunity to walk around and see what is on offer on the stands of the various exhibitors. In addition to the Walvis Bay Municipality, the Expo's partners include Erongo RED, Confidénte News Paper, Dunes Guest House, MTC Namibia, Guans Packaging, Namibia Breweries and Coca-Cola, among others. We are anticipating a similar number of business exhibitors and visitor numbers as in the 2018 bumper event despite the tough economic conditions that have forced some smaller exhibitions to close down. Exhibitors include banking services, educational institutions, insurers and retailers, a multitude of local SMEs, government ministries and public enterprises and finally, diplomatic missions accredited to Namibia. Only limited exhibition space remains. As for the outdoor area, 90% of the space has already been allocated to micro enterprises for a food court, where a variety of traditional food and international cuisine will be on offer. Significant this year, in comparison to previous editions of the Erongo Business and Tourism Expo, is a wider array of exhibitors offering diverse range of goods and services. Additionally the Usakos Museum will be presenting information sessions. The popular eatery, Moonlight Resort will operate a pop-up restaurant and are hosting VIP guests attending the exposition's Opening Ceremony. It is against this background that we urge individuals and businesses, still wishing to part-take in the 2019 edition of the Erongo Business & Tourism Expo, to contact our booking office without delay.

Fisheries Observer Angency honours long serving employees Rudi Bowe

The Fisheries Observer Agency (FOA) recently rolled out the red carpet to honour all long serving employees. It coincided with a year-end function and service awards. It was the FOA’s first-ever long service awards. A total of 152 staff members received trophies at the glamorous function held at the Pelican Bay Protea Hotel by Marriot. Most of the long service award recipients are with the FOA since its inception. The chairperson of the Confederation of Namibian Fishing Associations Matti Amukwa was a guest at the event. Amukwa described the FOA as part of the bigger fishing industry family. “Your input matters. Your input makes a difference”, added Amukwa. The Chief Executive Officer of the FOA, Stanley Ndara, in his keynote address said the FOA is a performance-based institution. It is therefore also an institution that rewards good work performance and recognise the value of its people. The FOA has the all important task protecting

Namibia’s fishing resources from exploitation. Not only for the short term benefit, but also to keep the country’s fish resources intact for future generations of Namibians. “This essentially means that the FOA is moving towards a performance based institution and we hope that the tokens of appreciation will go a long way in propelling you to give your utmost best in order to sustain our marine resources for the benefit of present and future generations. The FOA will with your inputs, craft a reward management policy with clear guidelines and set criteria to reward meritorious staff members”, he explained. Ndara added the FOA has now come of age and it is time for all the employees to move a gear forward and deliver excellent results within the prescripts of the Marine Resources Act.

Mrs Hildegarde Geduldt received a certificate of appreciation from Sonja Herholdt for supporting the Cancer Association for the past 19 years

The event was held at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre this past Saturday. The aim of the Hats & Roses ladies breakfast event is to share a message of hope. That although cancer is real, it can be beaten and one can make a difference during the disease, by taking each other by the hand and standing together to bring attitudes of positivity and hope back to those who have lost it in the midst of their battles. Ladies had the opportunity to listen to the beautiful voice of the South African singer, actress and songwriter, Sonja Herholdt. Video clips of testimonies from ladies who survived cancer were shared at the Hats & Roses event. During the event ladies competed for various category prizes such as vivacious lady in pink, lady creative and glamour girls. Hildegarde Geduldt received an award for the many years she has been a volunteer and the long period of being the chairperson of the committee in Swakopmund, until her cancer diagnosis. Geduldt has been supporting and volunteering for CAN for the past 19 years. She said she was caught off guard when she heard her name: “Even up to this point, I am not exactly sure what was said about me. I was genuinely surprised when my name was called. You know, one can find false pride and false humility – but I can assure you that I was stunned – into speechlessness! And anyone who knows me, would find that a bit hard to believe!” Geduldt said she couldn't think what was so exceptional about her being a volunteer of CAN. Many others were. She heard about her “courageous” stance, but all she could think of, was other people who had gone through infinitely more difficult times and who were still doing so. Geduldt shared her award with Petro Rabe, former manager at the Lions Old Age Home and presently the manager at the Antonius Residence. Geduldt said CAN has a good reputation for accountability. One can see where the money is used and there has never been a scandal connected to the association. This makes it a pleasure to help where one can. “Last, but not least, I am sorry that I did not make an appeal to younger members of the society to come and join us as volunteers in a fight against a disease for which there, as yet, is no outright, clear-cut, guaranteed method of avoiding it! I volunteered, not knowing that I, too, would become a statistic!!” The award winner thanked all attendees of the event: “You are winners just by your presence and the effort you put in to create the special atmosphere!”

He charged N$ 200.00 to read my fortune.
