Power outage hoax Is your tax affairs The national power utility Nampower yesterday afternoon late refuted rumours spreading on social media that Namibia would be experiencing a power failure from six o'clock this morning until at least noon. A spokesperson said there is no truth in it and explained the public should not bother to pay heed to such warnings unless officially received from Nampower. Nampower made a statement regard on its website as well. Locally, regional electricity distributor Erongo RED confirmed the same and said after receiving many inquiries from the public, officials followed it up with Nampower. “There is absolute no truth in this”, this Erongo RED official confirmed.

The Erongo Region has another feather in its mining hat. The Namib Lead and Zinc Mine, situated some 30km to the east of Swakopmund is gearing up to re-start production in 2019 and is expected to employ 150 people when in operation. Mining construction commenced in March and employs 300 people during this construction phase. It is this time of the year again. The annual tax returns for individual taxpayers are due at the end of June. As has become customary now, the Department of Inland Revenue hosts a series of Taxpayer Education Days at venues across Namibia, including Erongo where the Receiver of Revenue will again come out strong on 21 June to assist the public with tax inquiries and for the completion of annual tax returns. In a statement this week the Ministry of Finance announced the venues and said: “ The Ministry of Finance would like to inform all taxpayers that the Inland Revenue Department will conduct a national Taxpayer Education day on the 21 June 2018, under the theme “Strengthening Knowledg4 of Tax Laws and Procedures.” The Taxpayer Education Day program is aimed at reaching out to current and prospective taxpayers across all 14 regions. The objectives of the Taxpayer Education Day are to: Educate taxpayers on the importance of voluntary tax compliance; secondly to improve taxpayers' knowledge of the tax laws and procedures and thirdly to introduce the new tax system (Integrate Tax Administration System) to the general public.
