Power outage hoax Is your tax affairs The national power utility Nampower yesterday afternoon late refuted rumours spreading on social media that Namibia would be experiencing a power failure from six o'clock this morning until at least noon.

A spokesperson said there is no truth in it and explained the public should not bother to pay heed to such warnings unless officially received from Nampower. Nampower made a statement regard on its website as well.

Locally, regional electricity distributor Erongo RED confirmed the same and said after receiving many inquiries from the public, officials followed it up with Nampower. “There is absolute no truth in this”, this Erongo RED official confirmed.

The Erongo Region has another feather in its mining hat. The Namib Lead and Zinc Mine, situated some 30km to the east of Swakopmund is gearing up to re-start production in 2019 and is expected to employ 150 people when in operation.

Mining construction commenced in March and employs 300 people during this construction phase.

It is this time of the year again. The annual tax returns for individual taxpayers are due at the end of June. As has become customary now, the Department of Inland Revenue hosts a series of Taxpayer Education Days at venues across Namibia, including Erongo where the Receiver of Revenue will again come out strong on 21 June to assist the public with tax inquiries and for the completion of annual tax returns.

In a statement this week the Ministry of Finance announced the venues and said: “ The Ministry of Finance would like to inform all taxpayers that the Inland Revenue Department will conduct a national Taxpayer Education day on the 21 June 2018, under the theme “Strengthening Knowledg4 of Tax Laws and Procedures.”

The Taxpayer Education Day program is aimed at reaching out to current and prospective taxpayers across all 14 regions. The objectives of the Taxpayer Education Day are to: Educate taxpayers on the importance of voluntary tax compliance; secondly to improve taxpayers' knowledge of the tax laws and procedures and thirdly to introduce the new tax system (Integrate Tax Administration System) to the general public.

Namibia has adopted a Self-Assessment System, under which all taxpayers are required to compute their taxable income and file tax returns by the due date.

During the Taxpayer Education Day, Inland Revenue Department officials will be available to the general public to: 1. Assist taxpayers with the completion of tax forms.

2. Distribute tax brochures with summarized tax information.

3. Update contact and banking details of taxpayers to ensure data accuracy.

Small town of Uis also looking at revival of mine

London-listed Afritin is also looking forward at reviving the old tin mine at Uis, some 135 km east northeast of Henties Bay, the company recently confirmed in the national media. South Africa's Iscor owned and developed the mine to the world's largest hard-rock tin mine in the world, until depressed tin prices forced the closure of the mine in 1990.

The closing of the mine lead to Uis becoming a village with very little economic activities, but hopes are high that the sound would return of drilling and the periodic blasting at this opencast mine as well as the economic hustle and bustle associated with a mining town.

North River Resources obtained its licence in May 2017.

The total funding capital of the mine is US$21.46 million and its life expectancy is nine years. It is expected however, that there is sufficient ore reserves to extend the life of the mine beyond that.

The lead and zinc mine was previously owned by Deblin Mine between 1968 and 1991. Deblin had to shut the mine due to low market prices for lead and zinc and it also experienced devastating labour problems.

Craton Diamonds took over the mine in 2001 and Kalahari Minerals subsequently took over Craton

Diamonds in 2007. North River Resources acquired the project in 2009 and renamed it to the Namib Lead and Zinc Mining.

The Managing Director of North River Resources Mr Dag Kullmann at the groundbreaking said there is nothing new about this mine. He went on by saying: “We sit here against the backdrop of what's left of the old mine. An old mine that we are bringing back to life. This mine is divided into two areas, the south mine, which is the old mine, and in the next nine years we will mine in the other area�.

As an underground mining operation, the mine is unique in the sense that most mines in Namibia is open pit.

Uis Fly-In a huge success The annual Fly-In took place on the weekend of 8 to 9 June at Uis, luring aviation enthusiasts and their planes to this small and scenic Erongo village. With the beautiful Brandberg at the backdrop and a brilliant blue winter sky, pilots exhibited their airman skills and competed for lead positions in various categories.

“The event was very successful and was organised by the Light Sport and Amateur-Built Aircraft Association of Namibia - LISAMA Committee! We experienced very good weather for the entire weekend.

A total of 27 aircraft from all over Namibia participated in the weekend of which 16 took place in the competitions! Dr Henk Koster, an experienced precision and competition flying pilot designed and set up a very interesting and fun-filled competition that tested pilots' navigation- and flying skills including spot landings! David Botha entertained the crowd with his parachute jumps and perfect landings”, reported the event organiser.

After the official ending of the competition, the 4 Aerobatic Nam Boys - Mike Böttger, Matthias Röttcher, Jaqcues Jacobs and Tinus Dreyer performed some awesome aerobatic displays that gave the crowd goose flesh!

Oysters safe to eat again

Eileen van der Schyff Trouble looms for the driver of the Unitrans tanker truck that was recently destroyed in a fire next to the road between Omaruru and Kalkfeld along with a Zambian truck. The driver, identified as Donald Vemuna Kokati (41) was arrested and now faces criminal charges of theft of fuel and malicious damage to property. The driver of the Zambian truck, only known by the name of Mr Luca is still on the run, but he too is wanted for questioning as to his involvement in the incident.

The Unitrans tanker was transporting thirty thousand liters of fuel from Walvis Bay to a delivery destination in Northern Namibia. The Zambian truck, belonging to Cool Trans, was transporting frozen fish from Walvis Bay. According to the spokesperson of the Namibian Police in Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Ikuyu, both trucks were found parked close to each other facing Omaruru. Kokati alleged that he experienced trouble with the speed of the truck and pulled over and fell asleep. He allegedly heard a loud explosion coming from the truck.

The fire and explosion totally destroyed two trucks. Both drivers fled the scene, raising immediate suspicion that fuel theft may be the sole cause of the catastrophe. Kokati was arrested at Otjiwarongo shortly after the incident.

Ministry warns no mussels have yet been tested for DSP and should not be harvested or consumed The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources issued a statement on Monday, 11 June to inform the general public that it is safe again to consume oysters grown in the Walvis Bay Mariculture area 1. The Ministry has not yet made any declaration on the safety of consuming mussels from the area.

According to the statement, which was issued by Moses Maurihungirire the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, samples from the Walvis Bay Mariculture Production area 1 were collected and submitted for testing for Diarrhetic Shellfish Poisoning (DSP). That was during the most recent official sampling. Sampling and testing is facilitated by the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI).

In the statement Maurihungirire says the two consecutive re-tests which were conducted produced negative results and oysters may therefore be harvested for direct human consumption. “However, since no mussel samples were submitted to the NSI for re-testing of mussels from the Walvis Bay Production Area (Aqua Park 1), this area remains closed to the harvesting of mussels for human consumption, depuration and relaying�, Maurihungirire warned.

Port remains busy with cargo handling activities

The port of Walvis Bay is expected to continue with a busy cargo handling schedule well into the weekend and next week.

These include two chemical tankers, which discharges sulphuric acid and petroleum products, as well as the general cargo vessel Bold Voyager,which arrives alongside today [Friday] to load 40 000 metric tons of salt.

Rotary Club turns dreams into reality

The late Basie Steenkamp The death occurred late on Sunday night of Mr Basie Steenkamp (59), in life a well known video surveillance and automation specialist of Walvis Bay. Basie Steenkamp was diagnosed late last year with a progressive brain tumor which left him severely incapacitated in the last months of his life.

He leaves behind Mrs Jenny Steenkamp (Mynhardt), a well known local photographer.

The Swakopmund Rotary Club made the dreams of Festus Gonteb Primary School a reality after they extended their help to turn a storeroom at the school into a fully equipped feeding room, which will benefit approximately 1500 learners of the school.

This week Wednesday, the feeding room was officially inaugurated and for the very first time learners enjoyed a hot dog with a cup of tea, which was specially prepared by the staff members and proudly donated by the Rotary Club of Swakopmund.

The President of the Swakopmund Rotary Club, Anja Rohwer, said the first time she visited the school, she was overwhelmed by the learners' tidiness and the way they are proud to be part of this school. “I also saw the area where they were having their meals and decided to do something about it. I believe every child should have one warm meal per day, and some children do not have access to this”, said Rohwer.

The Rotary Club first started with the replacement of old windows with new ones for four classes at Festus Gonteb Primary school, and then moved to the feeding room. The Festus Gonteb Primary school started with the feeding program way back in 1996 already.

school, Mr Lenga Abraham, thanked the Swakopmund Rotary Club for the assistance. “I am very happy, my staff members are happy and most important, the learners who are the immediate beneficiaries are very excited as they will be having warm meals everyday”, said Abraham.

The Ministry of Education's Coordinator for the School Feeding Program, Mr Afrikaner, was overwhelmed by the work of the Rotary Club for meeting the government halfway, and said he hopes that other stakeholders would also learn from this great example and come on board.

An Egyptian safari at Namib High School Every year the invitations to the annual farewell are presented to the learners of Namib High School with a glimpse of what the theme for the farewell will be.

On Friday 8 June, the staff and children of the Namib High School were treated to a taste of Egypt, when the invitations for this year's Matric Farewell were delivered by members of the Farewell Committee with the assistance of three teachers, three students, as well as one dad and a member of the public.

The grade 12 learners received their invitations in the form of a passport from Cleopatra (Ms Jenny Sorbek, a teacher at Namib High School) and Pharaoh (Mr Morné Venter, a member of the public). The Principal, Mrs September, also received an invitation from the staff members of Namib High in the form of a golden pyramid.

This year the committee wanted something different from the usual themes of the ocean, Oscars, etc. and decided on a safari. The main idea behind this was that the children have “travelled” through their school career and will soon be embarking on a new adventure on their own without their teacher leadership.

Fulminanter 33.KÜSKA Auftakt Swakopmund (mw) Die Stimmung war so groß angesichts der Teilnehmerschar von über 500 Besuchern, dass sogar die Sonne neugierig durch die Nebeldecke blinzelte um zu sehen, was

denn da in der Küstenstadt Swakopmund so Närrisches los ist. Das Tanzmariechen begeisterte einmal mehr mit seinem Auftritt, und die Prinzengarde legte ihren gewohnt flotten Auftritt hin. Prinzen-

paar, Präsident und Komitee, alle gaben ihr Bestes, und so gab es kein Halten mehr: die Zuschauer applaudierten begeistert, begleitet von der Band, die immer wieder die Stimmung hoch hielt.

Wie so oft in unserem Land, verbirgt sich so hinter mancher Fassade Wertvolles: so wie hier in Karibib - die Landesfahne weist auf eine staatliche Einrichtung hin, und dann betreten wir eine andere Welt. 15 Jugendliche werden hier von mehreren Lehrkräften im Edelsteinschleifen ausgebildet – Theorie und Praxis ergänzen sich vor Ort. Als ein Projekt der Namibia Development Corporation (NDC) wurde das Karibib Gemstone Centre im Jahr 2008 ins Leben gerufen. „Seither haben wir über 300 jungen Menschen die Basis für den Eintritt in den Beruf als Edelsteinschleifer vermittelt“, so Naresh Kumar, der als Consultant im Centre tätig ist. Tatsächlich finden aus jedem Ausbildungskurs (zwei Kurse pro Jahr mit jeweils 15 Teilnehmern) immer wieder Abgänger Anstellungen bei Diamantschleifern z.B. in Windhoek. „Die Ausbildung ist sehr Praxis-orientiert und beschränkt sich auf das Wesentliche“, so Ingrid Hareses, die als ehemalige Kursteilnehmerin jetzt selbst als sehr freundliche und engagierte Ausbilderin arbeitet. Die Ausstattung an Maschinen ist gut, und jeder Schüler lernt Bestimmen und Bewerten von Edelsteinen, Schleifen, Kalibrieren, Facettieren und Polieren. Dazu erfolgt eine Unterweisung an Computern, und auch Grundlagen für business management werden

Direkt an der Hauptstraße in Karibib gelegen, eignet sich das Ausbildungszentrum gut für einen kurzen Stopp auf der Durchfahrt: alle Mitglieder des Lehrkörpers stehen jederzeit für ausführliche Informationen zur Verfügung, und im Ein-

gangsbereich sind Schauvitrinen mit geschliffenen und facettierten Edelsteinen (alles Arbeiten der Schüler) zu sehen.

Fahrt durch die Savanne – schwierige Pad. Wie ist es dann erst bei Nacht?

Die steinige Pad sich neigt und steigt, und der Mond begleitet die nächtliche Reise.

Der Dornbusch huscht graugrün und fahl und seltsam unwirklich im Scheinwerferstrahl, und ein Schakal kreuzt das Geleise.

Feuriger Augen feindliches Funkeln flüchtet ins Feld, verliert sich im Dunkeln.

Furchtsame Vögel flattern empor.

Die Stunden schwinden. - Da sind wir am Tor: Ein Windrad, ein Haus, ein freundliches Licht und über der Schwelle ein fröhlich Gesicht.

Es ist wieder Vogelzählung an der Küste.

Zweimal jährlich werden (neben anderen Orten im Land) in und bei der Lagune von Walvis Bay Vögel gezählt. Dann treffen sich neben Mitgliedern des Namibia Bird Club viele Freiwillige aus aller Welt, um in diesem Welt berühmten RAMSAR Wetland Daten über Vögel zu erfassen. RAMSAR ist ein internationales Übereinkommen über

soll. Die Tage, an denen Vogelzählungen stattfinden, sind die einzigen Tage im Jahr, an denen die normalerweise gesperrten Wege des Salzwerkes befahren werden dürfen (wofür dem Unternehmen ein ganz besonderer Dank gebührt!). Ziel der Zählung ist vor allem, um über den festgestellten Bestand an den verschiedenen Vögeln eventuelle Umweltveränderungen feststellen zu können. Gravierende Unterschiede zu früheren Zählungen

Wetlands, die einen Lebensraum von internationaler Bedeutung für Watt- und Wasservögel darstellen, unterzeichnet 1971 in Ramsar, Iran. Das Zählgebiet wird in Sektionen eingeteilt, für deren Zählung jeweils eine Gruppe Verantwortung trägt, die von einem erfahrenen Ornithologen geleitet wird. „Oh Mann, diesmal hat es mich aber richtig erwischt!“ Dieser Ausspruch kommt von einem Teilnehmer, der in einem besonders feuchtem Gebiet zählen

...dass in diesem unseren Lande, meiner Wahlheimat Namibia, der Karneval zwar deutlich weniger gefeiert ( aber dafür länger) wird, als in meinem Geburtsland Deutschland, dass aber nichtsdestotrotz das Niveau besonders bei den Abendveranstaltungen wie Büttenabend oder Prinzenball recht hoch ist. Den mit den Bräuchen des Landes Unkundigen irritiert zunächst einmal, über welch einen langen Zeitraum - verteilt auf verschiedene Orte im ganzen Land- Karneval gefeiert werden. Dass man damit Rücksicht nimmt zum Einen auf die weit auseinander liegenden Städte und zum Anderen auf die begrenzte Anzahl an Akteuren in den einzelnen regionalen Karnevalsvereinen ist verständlich und sehr lobenswert. In Deutschland beginnt die Fünfte Jahreszeit, wie die Närrische Zeit auch genannt wird, jedes Jahr am 11.11. mit dem Sturm der Narren auf die Rathäuser, danach füllen je nach Region unterschiedliche Veranstaltungen die Abend- und Wochenendstunden, ein großer Höhepunkt natürlich sind dann die Büttenabende im rheinischen Karneval z.B. in Mainz oder Köln und die Rosenmontagsumzüge.

Und „am Aschermittwoch ist alles vorbei“. In meiner alten Heimat Schwarzwald, im Verbreitungsgebiet der schwäbisch alemanmüssen dabei nicht unbedingt dramatisch sein: da die Daten international ausgetauscht werden, kann man z.B. feststellen, dass Minderbestände in Walvis Bay durch Mehrbestände beispielsweise in der Sua Pan in Botswana oder selbst in der Etosha Pan ausgeglichen werden.

Zur Abschlussbesprechung trifft man sich in der „The Chris Van Niekerk Corner“ Hütte des Salzwerkes.

Chris van Niekerk war langjähriger Vorstand der Walvis Bay Salt Holdings. Hier - inmitten der Salzpfannenpräsentiert Peter Bridgeford, Leiter des Vogelclubs an der Küste, die Ergebnisse der diesjährigen Sommerzählung. Zwar ist die Zahl an Zwergflamingos mit gut 6.000 Exemplaren tatsächlich

nischen Fasnacht, gibt es zusätzlich viele sehr spezielle regionale Veranstaltungen. In manchen Orten gibt es Schudiabende, an denen kleine verkleidete Gruppen (etwa 4-6 Personen) in den Gasthäusern

„angeklagt“ wird. Und ganz typisch sind in der alemannischen Fasnacht die sehr kunstvoll geschnitzten Holzmasken, die für jeden Fasnachtsverein typisch sind und bei den Umzügen neben den bunten (Fleckle-)

Foto: Martin Weigand kleine Sketche aufführen, natürlich unter Einbeziehung des Publikums, es gibt Hexentreiben mit mehreren Tausend als Hexen verkleideten Teilnehmern (da geht es manchmal recht „derb“ zu), und viele Besonderheiten wie das Stockacher Narrengericht, bei dem am Schmotzige Dunschtig (Schmutziger Donnerstag = Donnerstag vor Fasnacht) eine Persönlichkeit aus der Politik sehr gering (in Botswana waren es 100.000e), aber der (Große) Flamingo ist mit gezählten 43.000 Tieren sehr gut vertreten.

S i c h e l s t r a n d l ä u f e r, Säbelschnäbler und Seeschwalben, darunter die endemische Damara Seeschwalbe, um nur einige der wichtigsten Arten zu nennen, sind ebenfalls reichlich da.

Insgesamt werden über 110.00 Vögel bei 49 verschiedenen Spezies gezählt. Mit Erfahrungsaustausch und dem Versprechen, sich am 4. und 5. August 2018 für die Winterzählung wieder in WB zu treffen, findet diese Begegnung der internationalen Vogelfreunde und der freiwilligen Helfer mit einem Umtrunk und einem guten Vesper einen gemütlichen Ausklang.

Hästrägern für sehr farbenfrohe Akzente sorgen. Da gibt es Hexen, Teufel, Wölfe, Höllenknechte, Mühlenhonsili u.v.m. Doch zurück nach Namibia: es ist erstaunlich, mit welcher Begeisterung die hiesigen Narren die Veranstaltungen planen und durchführen, die Auftritte der Prinzengarde z.B. kann man schon als professionell bezeichnen, und auch die Büttenabende sind „vom Feinsten“, wie der

Berliner zu sagen pflegt. Lediglich den Umzug halte ich noch für verbesserungsfähig.

Auf jeden Fall zolle ich allen Planern und Akteuren dieser Veranstaltungen meinen großen Respekt und ich gratuliere dem närrischen Swakopmunder Karnevalsverein zum Jubiläum, zum 33.Küska, mit einem dreifachen „Küska, Küska, Küska!“ Martin Weigand

Namibia Pent Series Champions The Namibian Netball team won the Debmarine Namibia Netball Pent Series after beating Zambia 54-43 in final on Wednesday.

In a terrific match the teams were still level at halftime, but Namibia, spurred on by their vociferous fans, dug deep to pull away for a hard fought victory. It was the first time Namibia won the Debmarine Namibia Netball Pent Series as the inaugural show peace which was won by Zimbabwe last year. Botswana has beaten Zimbabwe after they lost to Namibia which opened the competition and then ensured a nail biting finish. Before the game between Namibia and Zambia started Zimbabwe were still on top of the standings. Namibia needed to beat Zambia with a big winning margin to win the title. With the half time score level at 26 the Namibian ladies needed to up there game in the last two quarters.

With the start of the third quarter Namibia raised their tempo with the home fans behind them the ladies did not disappoint as they were 41-37 in the lead at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter Namibian ladies were in a class of their own as they held a heavy Zambian offensive play and won the game 54-43. With the winning margin big enough to leapfrog Zimbabwe on goal difference and win the overall title. The Namibian team will start with preparations for the Africa World Cup Qualifiers which will take place in Lusaka in August.

CFC defeats SKW in Fistball League

The third round of the Bank Windhoek Fistball League took place over the weekend at Cohen Fist ball Club (CFC) in Windhoek. Hosts, CFC 1, put up a great performance which saw them record their first win of the season. As it stands, CFC 1 and SWK 1 are separated by a mere four points at the top of the log.

Champions Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW 1) kicked off the proceedings on a chilly morning. Despite the weather, they went on and won Group A to qualify for the semi-finals.

Swakopmund Fistball Club (SFC) failed to match their performances delivered in the previous round. The coastal team could only record a set win against SKW 1 and lost to both CFC 2 and CFC 3 who fielded strong teams backed by internationally experienced players.

CFC 2 and 3 battled it out in a tightly contested encounter.

The decider of the game came after three sets when CFC 2 narrowly won the match 2:1, their first win of the season.

As a result, CFC progressed to the semi-finals.

Group B was dominated by CFC 1 who swept other teams aside to finish top of the group. SKW 2 won against CFC 4 and DTS 3:0 and 2:1 respectively. SKW 2 then took on CFC 1 without a defensive plan during the first set. They however rectified this in the remaining two sets, but it was too late as SKW 2 lost 3:0. The other match saw CFC 4 face Deutscher Turn und Sportverein (DTS) whom they comfortably defeated.

The third placed team in Group A, CFC 3, was pitted against the fourth placed team in Group B, DTS, in the first crossover. CFC 3 won this encounter. SFC managed to register their first win of the day when they outplayed CFC 4. In the final placement games, SFC beat CFC 3 to finish fifth. CFC 4 beat DTS in the seventh and eighth placed match fixture.

SWK's two teams squared up against each other in the first semis. SKW 1 emerged victorious as they defeated SKW 2.

The other semis also saw two CFC teams fight it out for bragging rights. CFC 2 claimed the first set 15:14, but it was not enough as later on CFC 1 managed to win and booked a place in the finals.

The match for third place saw CFC 2 and SKW 2 pitted against each other. As the two teams competed for supremacy, SKW 2 took the lead. CFC 2 responded to level the score line but momentum shifted towards SKW 2 once more, who increased the lead to 2:1. This meant that SKW

only needed to win another set to finish the game off.

However, CFC 2 had other plans in mind and equalised again. In the end, SKW 2 picked up their game plan and defeated CFC 2 3:2.

Rivals SKW 1 and CFC 1 met in the finals. As the match kicked off, SKW 1, immediately started off on a fast pace.

CFC 1 on the other hand made numerous service errors and lost 9:2. CFC 1 later came back into the game, but it was too late as they lost the first set 11: 7. CFC 1 improved their game in the second set of which they won.

Towards the end of the match, CFC 1 refused to be dominated as they won the tightly contested third set. The final score was 11:9 in favour of CFC 1 who secured their first and significant win of the season. Kirsten van Biljon from CFC 2, was voted as Player of The Day for his exceptional match play.
