Goosen got the initial call about the fire at about 22:00. The exact cause of the incident is not yet known but rumours circulated that it might have been started by a cigarette left in a shack. As the houses are built close together the flames quickly spread and engulfed 19 homes. Two people had to receive medical attention at the scene. One resident was treated for smoke inhalation and another, allegedly a child, fell from a roof and injured itself.

“We used all three fire trucks and had to fill each up at least once to doze the fire,” Goosen continued.

“I heard my wife scream: 'fire, fire, fire'. When I came outside I saw the flames. I grabbed my daughter and all we could do was stand there and see all my belongings be destroyed,” said Clemence Zemuundja to namib times. Many of the residents were busy yesterday morning trying to salvage what they could – but almost everything was completely destroyed in the heat.

“I paid N$800 rent for my shack. Now I have nothing left anymore and nowhere to go,” Zemuundja continued. He stayed in the shack with his wife and three children. “Luckily we got clothes from a friend for my kids at least,” he said.

After extinguishing the fire Goosen distributed some blankets to the affected residents on behalf of the Swakopmund Mayoral Office in the early hours of the morning. Residents who wish to assist can contact the office of the mayor or the fire brigade.

Tsuseb further said that the Office of the Labour Commissioner has appointed a conciliator to attend to the dispute. Another issue which Tsuseb raised as his main concern is the issue of school principals, “all principals and educational inspectors are on grade 5 but the inspectors are receiving transport allowance while principals are not and that is one area we are looking at, because we want to find out why it is like that if they are both on the same grade, we took this case to the government, to the office of the prime minister” Tsuseb adds. “If we do not resolve issues in court with the government then we will be forced to take actions” said Tsuseb. The conciliation process between NANTU and the government is scheduled for 26 July.

NANTU national executive committee embarked to visit all the fourteen regions of the country to have consultative meetings which aims at informing and updating all NANTU members and teachers in particular on matters regarding salary negotiations and the team will also share what the current status of the negotiation is.

Tsuseb urges NANTU members to attend the consultative meetings so that they can ask questions and hear from the deputy secretary general Loide Shaanika Amushila, who according to Tsuseb will be present at the consultative meetings.

Trustco pays bonus to paid-up Shield members Trustco Insurance and Trustco Life Ltd – Namibian based shortand long term insurance companies today announced a Nawa bonus pay-out to existing paid up Shield members.

Currently the insurers have 120 000 policy holders covering in excess of 300 000 insured members. Legal Shield, the core product of Trustco Insurance has to date paid out N$160 million in legal fees on

behalf of members to legal practitioners.

Recently the insurers streamlined its products with a view to providing tailor made insurance for the public. With the Next Generation Legal Shield as the core pro-

duct, numerous optional additional benefits can be added. The customer can now cherry pick their ideal product. A further innovation is the introduction of a Nawa Bonus on this product, a first for Namibia.

This development caused the insurer to further explore ways to reward existing loyal members.

It was decided to reward members who have been fully paid up and claim free for five or more years. These members will qualify for their share of N$7 million.

All Shield members are urged to contact their nearest Trustco office to find out if they qualify for the Nawa Bonus and to ensure their details are updated.

As from 1 September 2016 all Trustco Insurance and Trustco Life policies will automatically include a Nawa Bonus which can be claimed monthly.

Erongo RED eyes N$1bn revenue for 2016/2017 The Erongo Regional Electricity Distributor (Erongo RED) anticipates collecting more than N$ 1 billion in revenue in the 2016/17 financial year.

This is after increasing the electricity tariff for the same period to 6.9 per cent. Tariffs increased by 7.7 per cent in the 2015/16 financial year.

Erongo RED Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Robert Kahimise made these announcements at a media conference in Walvis Bay on Tuesday.

He further said this year, the company budgeted N$ 121 million to be spent on various capital projects such as rural and urban electrification, as well as the upgrading of electricity facilities in the Kuisebmund and Narraville residential areas in Walvis Bay, amongst other projects.

“The current positive position of the company has provided the required impetus to invest in these capital projects, to ensure that we execute our mandate to distribute electricity,” he said.

Kahimise said the Electricity Control Board (ECB) granted NamPower a tariff increase of 16.71 per cent, with Erongo RED being granted an increase of 6.9 per cent. Kahimise said the increase in electricity prices represents a significant cost for consumers, especially for low income and financially vulnerable customers.

“To assist these customers, we recommended an average of 3.1 per cent increase for this group. I am happy to say that our request was favourably considered by ECB and for 2016/17, the pensioner and low income group will only get an average increase ranging from 3.1 per cent to 4.8 per cent.”

He said in 2015/2016, the company spent almost N$15 million on subsidising electricity for pensioners and low income earners.

This subsidy supports over 10 000 customers throughout the region, of which 4 827 are pensioners.

Erongo RED also subsidises the installation of prepaid electricity meters.

Container terminal 56 % complete Floris Steenkamp The Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) released statistics recently confirming the N$4 billion container terminal project on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay has now reached 56 % completion.

This project is the first of its kind in Namibia and involves the reclamation of 40 hectares of land in the port of Walvis Bay to form a man-made island on which a fully operational container terminal is to be constructed.

With the release of the statistics, Namport also revised the completion date of the project with several months from the last quarter of 2017 to mid-2018.

CHEC, according to the statistics so far spent close to N$1 billion on the project which represents 27 % of the total spending.

Of the total spending 17,85 % was spent on services and goods supplied by previously disadvantaged Namibians and 3 % was spent on Nami-

bian owned small and medium sized enterprises, according to the statistics.

The construction so far required 190 000 man days and a total of 360 Namibians have received training from CHEC whilst working on the project.

With regard to the revision of the completion date, Namport explained the main contractor, China Harbour & Engineering Company (CHEC), reportedly encountered obstacles with the installation of underground, vertical piles on the reclaimed land which will form the foundation of the container terminal.

During the planning phase it was foreseen that a 25 metres thick layer of organic silt 20 metres under the

seabed could pose a possible challenge with the installation of the piles.

The compo-sition of this silt layer is mainly from fossilised phytoplankton and research on the behaviour of such an organic layer under construction conditions remains limited.

CHEC undertook continuous research on the topic after the construction project commenced in 2014 and has in the meantime come up with a solution that could settle the piles better and also eliminate the possibility that the piles could sink or shift after the project has been completed and the weight of the container terminal, cargo and traffic bears down on it.

The entire Swakopmund Constituency community is invited to attend a very important outreach visit program by the Chairperson of the National Council, Ms Margaret MensahWilliams which will take place on 15 July at the MultiPurpose Centre in Mondesa at 09:00.

The main purpose of the visit is to enhance public participation in the law-making process. Mensah-Williams will also be explaining the functions of the National Council and how the public can get involved in the law-making process. The program will further give a platform to the community to discuss burning issues within the community and how they would want them to be addressed. It is also planned that the program will incorporate a youth theatre that will be acting on important issues affecting the youth today and possible solutions thereto. The same youth, if time allows will be used to dramatise the work of the National Council and why the youth should partake in the law-making process.

Shack fires at a high Shack fires are quickly becoming a major concern at the coast, as shack-dwellers are not only losing most or all of their belongings but their lives are at risk. These fires are a frequent occurance in winter, and mostly affect the poor and less-fortunate among us.

shacks have been confirmed to be completely obliterated by the fire, leaving not even a mattress behind. Hans Aribeb, one of the residents, has taken it upon himself to collect any form of donation or help extended to those who have lost everything. Shack fires are a haunting reminder of the alarming housing shortage in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, which seem to be a neverending issue.

Be aware of cloning

The public should be aware of suspected card cloners doing their rounds at the coast. Theses perpetrators approach unsuspecting ATM users prior to or after concluding a transaction and offer to assist victims when having trouble with the ATM. The target is advised to redo the transaction, it is then when the card is unknowingly swiped through a skimming machines.

This type of skimming requires accomplices to loiter around the ATM shoulder surfing for the customer PINs. The perpetrators use the stolen card information to manufacture a counterfeit card and match the customer PIN to the new card to make fraudulent transactions.

How to protect yourself against card cloning Card cloning involves the use of hidden cameras and card scanners that are covertly affixed to a legitimate ATM machine.

The skimming equipment often does not interfere with the functioning of the machine, however, as the customer completes a transaction, the camera captures the customer as they put in their Personal Identification Number (PIN) and the card scanner captures the information on the ATM/Card strip on the back of the card. With the customer PIN and information from the card strip, the criminal can then “re-encode” a different card to essentially clone your card without you ever losing possession of the card! The “re-encoded” cards can be anything from a gift card to an electronic hotel room key! Armed with YOUR PIN, the thieves then go to another ATM with the “re-encoded” card that has YOUR information on it and use YOUR pin to withdraw funds until the account is empty. Various online and in person purchases can also be made with the “reencoded” cards.

8 Keys to Prevention 1. Look for the Signs: Often when examined, an affected ATM machine will have uneven parts or an unprofessional finish, even with sticky tape or glue residue present, which is evidence of a false front having been previously applied. Any loose part of the ATM or a piece that looks like it doesn't belong probably doesn't!

2. Cover Your PIN: Use your free hand to cover the hand you use to key in your PIN. The covert cameras are often the size of a pin hole. If the camera can't get a glimpse from above as you enter your PIN, it is less likely you will be victimized.

3. Watch Your Accounts: Carefully watch your accounts. If you fail to catch the fraud early, the bank may not necessarily reimburse you.

4. Use Credit: Money coming from a credit card is not money coming directly from your account like it is in the case of an ATM or Debit Card. Once you prove it wasn't you who did the disputed transaction, you are likely to get your money back or have your account quickly credited.

5. Not Every ATM is the Same: Carefully choose the ATM you decide to use. ATM's in tourist areas, bars, airports, etc. are more likely to be targeted by skimming operations since the skimming equipment can be applied by the offenders with less people noticing.

ATM's inside banks are a much safer choice. Private ATM's are much less safe since they are not directly operated or managed by a bank.

6. If It Doesn't Seem Right It Probably Isn't: If you have even a hint of abnormality on your account, report it. Often thieves will charge small amounts as a test to see if the card will work before making a much more bold purchase.

7. Be vigilant: Be on the look-out for thieves and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately. Do not intervene but do not be afraid to contact authorities. A rapid police response can often prevent someone from being victimized.

8. Regularly Change Your PIN: We all have too many passwords and pass codes that we need to remember, however, routinely changing your bank Personal Identification Number, PIN, can prevent fraud. Also do not use the same PIN for more than one card.

Avoid reusing PIN's.

Youth Development Policy launched Erwin Leuschner

While Namibia's countrywide unemployment rate stands at 29.6% (2014 study) the situation in Swakopmund is much worse: 65% of the youth is unemployed. This figure was revealed yesterday and forms part of the reason why Swakopmund developed a Youth Development Policy and Strategy.

“Namibia, like many of its neighbours, faces many challenges varying from unemployment, HIV/AIDS, alcohol and drug abuse and an alarming high number of school dropouts without the minimal skills for productive employment to mention a few,” said Jerry Ekandjo, Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, yesterday. Ekandjo officially launched the Swakopmund Youth Development Policy and Strategy.

The policy seeks to grant the local youth a platform for growth, active participation in development programmes, decision making, social & cultural wellbeing, education and skills training and leading lifestyles. Besides the alarming high number of unemployed youth in Swakopmund Ekandjo mentioned various challenges the youth face today. “They have limited access to capitalise their micro business,” he said. In this regard he noted that although some youth have good business ideas, they are seen and regarded as a high risk clientele group as they lack the pre-requisite collateral. “As a result, financial institutions turn down their requests for project funding, thereby negatively impacting the lives of young people,” he said.

Ekandjo congratulated the Swakopmund Municipality for taking the step and developing such a policy. He however described this step only as the “first lap of your team.” He now called on all stakeholders to implement the document and realise the vision. “While implementing the strategy, I urge the Municipality of Swakopmund to align the execution of its strategy with the Harambee Prosperity Plan,” he said.

At the same event Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua had a simple message to convey. “I only have one word. Mind-set,” he said. He compared the Namibian youth to other nations and concluded that a change in mind-set is necessary. “What I pick up when I visit China is the different mind-set of the youth there. They always want to invent something new and are very creative,” he noted. They don't want to drop out of school, but have the mind-set to create something.

“Our youth in Namibia wants to take part in demonstrations. That just shows us that they are not occupied,” he said. Xaris not yet out of the woods after favourable High Court ruling Floris Steenkamp Xaris Energy is not yet out of the woods with its intentions to construct a 250MW gas fired power plant near Walvis Bay. The only remaining obstacle is if Arandis Power appeals a High Court Judgement in which a claim was rejected by the company [Arandis Power] that Xaris Energy was unfairly favoured by the Ministry of Mines and Energy in the award of a tender for the construction of this gas fired plant to be situated east of the Dune belt near the wellknown Dune 7 at Walvis Bay. Arandis Power, also realising Namibia's need for a medium term electricity solution, is planning a hitech 120mw hybrid solar power plant at Arandis. The company challenged a decision by the Ministry of Mines and Energy to select Xaris Energy as the preferred bidder. The court challenged Xaris Energy as the first respondent, energy minister Obeth Kandjoze as the second respondent and the Namibian Cabinet and Head of State Dr. Hage Geingob respectively as the third and fourth respondents.

Acting Judge Collins Parker dismissed the application with costs in the Windhoek High Court last week.

The plant, with a generating capacity of 250mw will be supplied with gasified liquid natural gas via a pipeline that connects to a floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU) at the liquid bulk fuel terminal that is currently constructed north of Walvis Bay as the first phase of the future SADC Gateway Port.

The power plant (named the Walvis Bay Power Plant) is expected to supply in Nambia's immediate electricity demand and bridge a possible electricity deficit before the long awaited Kudu Gas Project comes online.

A liquified natural gas carrier (graphic obtained from Xaris project briefing) can deliver large volumes of liquified natural gas to the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), example in graphic form below left. Cgals wins in Russia The Swakopmund Cgals Chamber Choir has won the Open Category for “Musica Sacra with accompaniment” at the 9th World Choir Games currently taking place in Sochi (Russia).

The Cgals sing in a total of three categories at the event and have so far completed two categories.

The next category will be completed next week after which the Cgals will sing in a concert organised by Interkultur and a last time during the Closing Ceremony. “We have also received a Silver Diploma for the category Folklore a cappella,” Karen Miller, a member of the choir, informed namib times from Sochi. The Bank Windhoek Swakopmunder Musikwoche Moves to the Namib High School The annual Bank Windhoek Swakopmunder Musikwoche will this year take place at the Namib High School premises. The event is set to take place in Swakopmund from 9 – 18 December.

“During the past six years, the Bank Windhoek Musikwoche started to outgrow the Namib Primary School.

As more and more participants enrolled, a concert band was added and a bigger choir as well as the junior orchestra, we ran out of room at the NPS,” says Christiane Berker, Organisational Director of the Bank Windhoek Swakopmunder Musikwoche.

“With our 50th Jubilee last year we literally burst at the seams, and rehearsal schedules became a giant puzzle, trying to allocate two big halls to all the groups. Facing the option to either start putting up tents on the school premises or move, we approached the Namib High School (NHS) and were received with open arms.”

“As the Namib High School is a great supporter of Arts and Culture and offer Art and Design as well as Integrated Performing Arts as subjects. We are happy to enter into a fruitful and co-operative long-term relationship,” Berker continued.

“Our Concert Band will be very happy to finally get an adequate rehearsal hall, big enough so all the trumpets don't blow out their ear drums!” Berker remarked.

Berker thanked the Namib Primary School, in particular to Mrs and Mr Wilke, who took care of the Musikwoche for many, many years and can now hopefully finally enjoy a December without the responsibilities they carried to make our stay as pleasant as possible.

Swaco adopts “Nigeria” and “Nawalta” “It is our responsibility and our heritage to look after the wildlife in the country. If we don't do it, our children will not be able to see any more rhinos,” said George Laubscher, director of the Swaco group of companies, during the handing over of the money to Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) this week in Swakopmund. The money will be used specifically for the conservation of Nigeria and her calf Nawalta.

Nigeria was born in the Torra Conservancy in August 1996. She has given birth to four calves already, all of which are still surviving. Her first calf named Niger has also given birth to two calves.

Nigeria's most recent calf is a male born in January 2013 and has survived the most devastating drought experienced in Namibia. Swaco Group Namibia proudly named the calf Nawalta after the late Mr Walter Böttger.

The days when the government was seen as the only social change agent and the absolute macro problem solver are becoming part of the past, as the corporate market are gradually realising their role too by actively participating in social and community projects under the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Namibia,” the Swaco Group said in a statement.

It is the company's aim to not only consider and protect its shareholders, but also all stakeholders; including employees, customers, suppliers,

the environment and the community.

“We therefore commit ourselves to partnerships with government and reputable non-profit organisations whose development goals are aimed at viable, innovative and sustainable solutions in response to national and global priorities,” the company states.

It is for that reason that the company has decided for a second time to support the Save the Rhino Trust in their tireless efforts to protect the desertadapted black rhino of the Kunene and Erongo regions. “From the point of near extinction, the rhino population has rebounded over the past 30 years due to Save the Rhino Trust's dedication and hard work. Their dedicated teams of trackers go out on daily patrols to monitor the last truly freeranging population of black rhino in the world,” the company states. During 2015 Swaco adopted the two rhinos and donated N$35 250 for their conservation.

DYNAMICS OF THE PROPERTY MARKET. There are notable “changes” taking place in the Property market which are consequential to the influence of variable factors expected from the essence of current economic conditions. Firstly, one has to realise that the “property market” is continuously changing and therefore also making it a dynamic market.

However, depending on one's position in the market being a Buyer, Seller, Landlord, Tenant, Developer or Financier, you have to continuously adapt your objectives according to these changing conditions else your expectations might not be accomplished. Although it might be early to predict short- to medium term changes, indicators are that Sellers/ Developers might be in for a bumpy ride. Already, there is a noticeable increase in the estimated average time a property stays on the market. One of the reasons are that income levels (affordability by especially the “middle class”) have dropped way below house prices and “Rentvestors” (people who buy to rent out) find that the expected Rent income (as return on their investment) is also, as a consequence, under pressure which gave life to a phenomenon where they either waive annual increases (to retain the tenant) or, even reduce such rent to avoid vacancy for an unpredicted length in time. Similarly, Sellers also start to consider Renting out on the short term (e.g. 12 months) if their asking price could not be matched within volatile conditions. Furthermore, and unlike the recent past, Sellers have become wiser in doing their sums (calculating “holding cost”) which nowadays often lead them to price reduction as it would be financially more advantageous than to “hang on to it”. Along the same vein, Sellers have become more open for considering proposed offers. It is important to understand that due to significant resistance by Sellers to house price declines, in times of economic and residential demand slowdown the residential market often moves away from market equilibrium pricing.

Therefore, the average market house price level as depicted by a house price index is not necessarily the “market equilibrium” price. Another noticeable movement in the market is our experience of increased enquiries for “Plot-andPlan” offerings because of a “saving” on Transfer Cost being another avenue taken by Buyers to reach reduction in expenses. These remarks are sample indicators of variable factors in the prevailing local property market for consideration by those who venture into it. Current advice to Property Developers is to do comprehensive research e.g. Feasibility Studies to target correctly at Buyer needs and income which would result in a quicker turn-around of capital but most importantly ensure that the major input cost (purchase of the land) will result in an eventual affordable Selling Price! Many Developers are seeking vacant land and the Demand by far exceed the Supply which is to the benefit of the Sellers of such land asking “inflated prices” but could be, from the outset, detrimental to the end Selling prices. Look at what the market wants and at what price, do the construction and associated cost calculations (including profit), deduct this from the potential/targeted selling price – then you get an idea what you should offer for such vacant property and how close or far this result is from the asking price. An der Atlantikküste,in der Namibwüste “ART JAM” an der Privatschule Swakopmund Pünktlich am 1. Juli begannen an der Privatschule Swakopmund (PSS) die Veranstaltungen des Kunst- und Kulturmonats, der kurzerhand zum „ART JAM“ benannt wurde.

Beim Lesefest der Primarstufe wurden Julian Lettenbauer (Klasse 3) und Martha Gantze (Klasse 5) als beste Vorleser der Primarstufe belohnt.

Am ersten Wochenende des Monats, bzw. Freitagnachmittag und Samstagvormittag, trafen sich viele Eltern, Lehrer und Schüler in Workshops, um gemeinsam kreativ zu arbeiten. Neben einem gut besuchten Tanzkurs wurden rund 22 Mosaike angefertigt und der Schulhof der Oberstufe gestaltet.

Auch an den kommenden Wochenenden laufen weitere Kunst- und Kulturangebote. Als Höhepunkt galt die Theateraufführung „ANOTHER WAY“, die am 13. und 14. Juli in der Aula der PSS stattgefunden hat.

Ein Büttenabend erster Sahne

Swakopmund (er) – Ein Abend, der in die in die Geschichtsbücher eingehen wird. Der diesjährige Deutsche Büttenabend des Swakopmunder Karnevals Küska bot etwas für jedermann – die Küska-Organisatoren haben die ohnehin hohen Erwartungen erneut übertroffen.

Wie gewohnt war die Narrhalla im Haus der Die Aufgabe des Chefs vom Protokoll wurde Jugend (HdJ) dem diesjährigen Motto dieses Mal Christian Stiebahl überlassen, der für entsprechend „Ein bisschen Spaß muss sein“ viel Heiterkeit sorgte. Während der kurzen Wartezeit während des Umzugs nahm sich Prinzessin Bonnie, die I., die Angelnixe (Bonnie Doll) die Gelegenheit, Leckerlies an die Kinder auszuteilen. Insgesamt war der diesjährige Karneval wieder ein großer Erfolg.

Leider gab es beim diesjährigen Umzug nicht die erwünschte Teilnahme. Hoffentlich ändert dies sich im kommenden Jahr.

Liebe Küsten leserinnen und - Leser!

Da ist er – schon wieder. Der liebe Ostwind. Die heißen und staubigen Tage wollen dieses Jahr wohl kein Ende kriegen. Egal mit welcher Entschlossenheit man sein Fenster zumacht und dieses so gut wie möglich versucht abzuriegen, hilft es nichts.

Nach einen Tag harter Arbeit kann man zuhause weiter arbeiten und putzen, da die feinen Staubpartikel es auch den wintzigsten Ritz schaffen und die Bude versauen.

Aber eigentlich ist es alles halb so schlimm, denn schließlich heißt es auf gut Namibia-Deutsch: „Wenn der Ostwind weht, dann wird es eine gute Regenzeit geben.“ Das weis doch jedes Kind in diesem Lande.

Aber wussten Sie, dass es eigentlich keinen handfesten Beweis dafür gibt?

Schon unzählige Male ist es in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten vorgekommen – zumindest in denen, die aufgezeichnet wurden – dass es auch ohne Ostwind eine gute Regenzeit gab. Umgekehrt ist es auch nicht anders.

Nehmen wir die gute Regenzeit von 2010/2011.

Ja, ok, es gab ein paar Ostwindtage. Aber noch lange nicht so viele wie in diesem Jahr. Heißt dies, dass der gute Regen damals gerechtfertigt war? Nein, eben nicht.

Gesetzt den Fall, diese Theorie würde stimmen.

Dann können wir uns auf eine besonders gute Regensaison vorbereiten, vielleicht sogar derart gut, dass der Swakop wieder das Meer erreichen wird. Das wäre

doch was.

Der Ostwind-Staub und Dreck ist eine Sache.

Mancher hustet den ganzen Tag, der andere muss sich die Nase ständig putzen. Dass es wärmer und trockener ist, stellt man aber dann deutlich fest, sobald der Popel wie im Inland deutlich härter ist. Ist auch ok. Aber die Hitze mit der hohen Luftfeuchtigkeit ist eine ganz andere Sache.

Ja, so sind wir Küstenbewohner halt. Ist es heiß, meckern wir. Ist es kalt, meckern wir genauso. „Der letzte Winter war richtig kalt“, hört man immer wieder. Stimmt auch, das war er. Dieses Jahr gibt es – oder so meint man halt – ständigen Ostwind. Schon wieder hat man etwas zu meckern.

Aber dabei solle man sich eigentlich glücklich und dankbar schätzen, dass man den Ostwind noch erleben kann und darf. Schließlich hat man als Küstenbewohner das Privileg, in einer art Idylle zu leben. Hier genießt man eine Ruhe und hat nicht den hektischen Alltag wie die Windhoeker. Außerdem benehmen sich unsere TaxiFahrer (manchmal) besser.

Uns geht es so gut, dass wir u n s ü b e r d a s We t t e r beschweren müssen, weil es

eigentlich nicht viel anderes gibt, dass uns Sorgen bereitet. Da haben die Europäer – und vor allem die Brexit-Heinis – zurzeit ganz andere Sorgen. Da können wir uns doch wahrhaftig nicht allzuseher beschweren.

Nach dem Regen scheint die Sonne. Und genau so sollte man den Ostwind betrachten. Hat sich der Wind am abend gelegt, sollten Sie Ihre Familie greifen und statt den Fernsehr anschalten, einen Spaziergang am Strand machen. Die Sundowner sind täglich atemberaubend. Dieses Potential hat auch der liebe Quinton Liebenberg gesehen, der genau deshalb seine Beach Bar am Montagabend aufgemacht hat.

Das muss man sich eigentlich mal vorstellen.

Derweil die Inländer frieren, können wir mitten im Winter ein kaltes Bier bei strahlenden Sonnenschein mit über 30 Grad Celsius genießen. Einfach Klasse.

Schade nur, dass die Meerestemperatur nicht ebenfalls mitspielt.

The Land Rover Owners Club of Namibia is inviting Land Rover enthusiasts from all over the world to join the Namibian Land Rover Festival in Uis, Namibia from 26-28 August 2016.

Their aim of the Namibia Land Rover Festival is to see how many Land Rover cars and products can congregate over the intended period. Not only will visitors get to enjoy the outdoors and explore the wonderful terrain and landscapes that Uis in Namibia has to offer, but also get to bring tribute and display the iconic Defender in all its form and glory.

All Land Rover models welcome!

Land Rover vehicles of all ages, types and models are welcome! The club vehicle categories based on

suspension are as follows: LEAFERS: Series I, II, IIA and Series III, Forward Controls IIA & IIB (Stage 1 V8) COILERS: All Defenders (90, 110 & 130) Range Rovers (1970-2001), Discovery (1989-2004).

INDEPENDENT: Discovery (20052014), Discovery Sport, Freelanders, Range Rovers (2002-2014), Range Rover Evoque.

The main meeting and gathering place will be at the Brandberg Rest Camp in Uis. Uis is a settlement located in Erongo Region, Namibia (in the former Damaraland). However all

visitors are requested to make use of all the other B&B’s and camping spots in/around Uis as well. In terms of

Karate world champs in Swakopmund Erwin Leuschner

The Dome in Swakopmund indeed is a world class facility. This was once again underlined on Wednesday evening, when Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua welcomed the senior Karate masters from various countries. “I actually had another event tonight, but this occasion is of such magnitude that I just had to be here,” he said and welcomed the various athletes.

The JSKA World Karate Championships will officially kick off today from 8:00. After the elimination and finals of individual categories Kata/Kumite an award

ceremony will take place at 17:00. The event continues on Saturday with a marchon and a ceremony to start at 9:00. From 11:15 there the senior and open division final events commence. An award Ceremony will take place at 16:00 followed by a Sayonara Party at 19:00.

In total there are an estimated 370 athletes attending the event with Namibia having entered 112 individuals. The Karate World championship might very well be the biggest yet as more than 1000 entries have been recorded with athletes participating in

various divisions.

Usually the entries during World Championships are about 800.

“With this facility it has always been our dream to host events of this magnitude and build bridges to other countries,” said Horst Fritze, one of the Dome trustees, during the welcoming this week. Mutjavikua thanked the attendees on behalf of the Namibian government, saying that “next time you come back as a tourist.”

The Namibia Shotokan Karate Academy has been attending the JSKA World Karate Championships since 2004. It

is hosted every second year. After the last World Championship in Italy, Namibia boasts 7 new world champions, beating many world class teams enabling them to obtain the 2nd place overall in terms of medals won by countries. Whilst Namibia did not tender to host the event, (a tender was submitted by the United Kingdom), the hosting of the 2016 JSKA Shotokan World Championship was offered to Namibia. This offer was extended to Namibia as the JSKA management (Shihankai) was astounded by the excellence of Namibia karate, and was impressed by the discipline and good conduct displayed by the Namibia karateka and the quality of management.

Sensei Willem Burger (Shotokan Chief In-

structor) attended the JSKA European Championship held in Glasgow (Scotland) in July 2015, to promote the 2016 JSKA World Karate Championship in Na-

mibia. “We started this event 22 years ago with a small tournament. All these years later we have elevated the sport to a world level. The results of our development will

be seen this weekend,” Sensei Burger said.

The public is invited to attend the event and observe the participants in their form. Entrance fee is N$100 per person.

History will be made this weekend when the Namibia Shotokan Karate Academy will host the 8th JSKA World Karate Championships at the Dome in Swakopmund. An estimated 370 athletes from 14 countries will participate in the prestigious event with a new world champion to be determined in the end.

Close to 100 karateka from the coast attended a training session at the Dome recently in Swakopmund. Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua welcomed the senior officials on Wednesday evening at the Dome in Swakopmund. Some of the international guests commended the Dome by saying there are not even such facilities in Europe
