In a significant achievement, the Namibia Airports Company (NAC) has successfully obtained Aerodrome Certification for both Walvis Bay International Airport (WBIA) and Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA).

The certification process, conducted in line with Namibia Civil Aviation Regulations (NAMCARs) Part 139 provisions, was completed last week, with certificates issued by the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

The rigorous aerodrome certification process included

public consultation, evaluation of the aerodrome manual, on-site verification of facilities and equipment, as well as the implementation of corrective action plans (CAPs). The NCAA affirmed that all aspects of the evaluation, findings, and CAPs were successfully addressed, leading to the issuance of certificates

T h e E ro n g o R e g i o n a l Council appointed Mr Mupenzeni Ntelamo as the Chief Regional Officer (CRO) as from 1 December.

This appointment comes after the former CRO, Ludmilla Habate Doȅses resigned last year in September.

Ntelamo was the Director (Resident Representative) of the International Planned Parenthood Federation- Sub Regional Office

to the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a position he held for nine years. He is currently a PhD candidate in Developmental Studies at the University of South Africa. Ntelamo is an experienced executive in public policy and population and development, prudent management, and brings to the Council 15 years of leadership on the national and global front.

In a statement released, the Chairperson of Erongo Regional Council, Benita Imbamba said, “the Erongo Regional Council, Regional Councillors, Management and staff are honoured to welcome Mr Ntelamo to the centre of excellence and is confident that with his leadership abilities and foresight for development, the Council will strive to be the highest performance and service delivery entity in the country.”

16 Days to Deadline for Sim Highlighting the progress of this initiative, CRAN provides registration statistics: 15 June 2023: Approximately 29% of the 2 760 804 active SIM cards were registered.

30 September 2023: A 33% registration rate among 2 789 580 active SIM cards.

30 November 2023: A substantial increase to a 43% registration rate for the 2 436 367 active SIM cards. Mrs. Emilia Nghikembua, Chief Executive Officer of CRAN, noted the positive trend in registration across various operators.

This increase signifies encouraging progress within the review timeframe.

The Deadline Approaches As the countdown continues, unregistered SIM cards will face a three-month suspension period starting from 31 December 2023. Attempting to use services during this time will result in a warning message, and customers will be unable to use the service until the necessary registration is completed. Nghikembua emphasised, "during the three-month suspension period, the service may be reinstated, and the customer can retain the mobile number linked to the SIM card, once the customer provides the necessary information for SIM card registration." However, if registration remains uncompleted after the suspension period, mobile service providers will cancel the service and number. Customers will then need to purchase and register a new SIM card, resulting in the loss of the previous mobile number.

Online Registration To streamline the process, MTC launched its online sim registration process, accessible at https://www.mtc.com.na/sim-registration.

Follow the step-bystep instructions, providing the necessary personal details, proof of identity, and completing the liveness detection process. You will need a valid Namibian ID or passport and its imperative that the details provided match those on the identification document. Your SIM card should be activated within a few hours after successful registration.

Additionally, The Executive Director of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Dr Audrin Mathe will undertake a tour of MTC and Telecom Namibia mobile shops. The purpose of the tour is to assess the progress and challenges faced by both mobile operators and consumers in the ongoing Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card registration process ahead of the 31 December 2023 deadline. He will be accompanied by representatives from the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia, Telecom Namibia and MTC. Urgent Call to Action With only 16 days left, Nghikembua urges ICT consumers to register their SIM cards before the year-end deadline. Waiting for the three-month suspension period could disrupt services and jeopardise the retention of mobile numbers.

"Registering before 31 December 2023 ensures that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) consumers continue enjoying the full benefits of ICT products and services," Nghikemba stated.

Namubes Takes Lead Sharlien Tjambari

Councillor Dina Namubes retained her seat as the Mayor of Swakopmund during the election of Office Bearers which took place on Tuesday this week.

This will be her second term in Office after taking over from the now Swakopmund Constituency Counsellor, Louisa Kativa in 2022.

David Am-Gabeb retained his position as the deputy mayor while Blassius Goraseb was elected as the Chairperson of the Management Committee.

In her maiden speech, Namubes said, “our council is unique and stands out from the

others, because despite our disagreements, we agree leave the chamber with a smile on our faces.”

Namubes said she has the honour of serving the Swakopmund community. A community that she greatly values and a community that never hesitates to ask

questions, offer advice, and encouragement, or stand with council through the good and bad times. Shell's Deepsea Bollsta to Depart Namibia by June 2024 Eileen van der Schyff

In a recent update reported by Energy Voice journalist, Ed Reed on December 12, it has been revealed that Shell's Deepsea Bollsta rig is set to conclude its operations in Namibia by June 2024.

Rig owner Northern Ocean has disclosed ongoing discussions with potential customers in West Africa and other challenging environments.

The Deepsea Bollsta, which commenced its Namibian operations in December 2022 after arriving from Norway, has played a pivotal role in drilling exploration and appraisal wells in the Orange Basin.

This development comes after an extension agreement between Northern Ocean and Shell in May, extending the

rig's contract until June, with an optional six-month extension.

Shell expressed its commitment to continuing exploration efforts in the Orange Basin under the PEL0039 license. A spokesperson for Shell stated, "we in-tend to continue our back-toback drilling campaign over the remaining term of the contract by appraising the Jonker discovery and drilling at least one more exploration well." The departure of the Deepsea Bollsta marks the end of an era in Namibia, with Shell planning an intensive data analysis phase

post-contract to strategise the next phase of operations. Northern Ocean commended the rig's "outstanding performance" in the challenging Namibian region throughout the winter season.

The Deepsea Bollsta's tenure in Namibia has been marked by successful exploration, including discoveries at Graff-1, La Rona-1, and Jonker-1.

Presently, it is actively engaged in the Jonker2A appraisal well.

NAMCOR estimates Jonker's reserves at 2.5 billion barrels, with Graff holding 2.4 billion barrels.

The dawn of the fifth generation of wireless communication, 5G, is upon us, ushering in a new era of connectivity. According to Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) Intelligence, South Africa leads the sub-Saharan charge in 5G deployment, joined by countries like Botswana, Zimbabwe, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar. Namibia, too, has embraced this technological evolution, with the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) recently awarding 5G spectrum through a spectrum auction.

To address public concerns and ensure informed adoption, CRAN initiated a 5G Consumer Awareness Campaign, focusing on educating consumers about the benefits of 5G technology and dispelling myths surrounding its potential health risks. While 5G promises unprecedented speed and efficiency, concerns have emerged regarding its impact on human health. Kristof Itana, Manager of Technology and Standards at CRAN, clarifies the main differences between 5G and its predecessors – 2G, 3G, and 4G. "5G represents an evolution in telecommunication standards," says Itana. Unlike its predecessors, 5G operates at higher frequencies, making it 100 times faster and more efficient. Crucially, Itana emphasises that the radiation emitted by 5G is akin to previous technologies, with the only notable difference being the introduction of "millimetre waves," harmless to public health.

Addressing potential health risks, Itana dismisses unfounded claims linking 5G to the spread of COVID-19.

“There is no proof that Electromagnetic Frequencies (EMFs) or 5G affects your risk of developing viral infections," he asserted. After extensive research by international bodies such

as the International Commission on NonIonizing Radiation Protection and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, no evidence has been found linking 5G to COVID19, cancer, or any other ailments. Itana assures the public that all equip-ment used for 5G deployment adheres to local and international safety standards, further mitigating any potential health concerns.

In conclusion, Itana underscored the transformative potential of 5G across industries. "5G is a wireless network technology that provides faster wireless communications, enabling a true digital evolution." Importantly, he emphasised that there is currently no solid evidence supporting claims of negative health effects from 5G. As we embrace this technological leap, Itana reassured the public, stating, "5G technology shall not harm public health." With the assurance that all equipment undergoes rigorous safety checks, Namibia stands at the forefront of a digital revolution, ready to reap the benefits of 5G across various sectors.

Young Woman Arrested for Fatal Stabbing Eileen van der Schyff A murder occurred on Tuesday evening this week between 17:30 and 18:00, at a house in Tutaleni, Kuisebmund, Walvis Bay. The victim, identified as 27-year-old Ritjiwee Reeboke Soroseb lost his life when he was allegedly stabbed by a 15-year-old Namibian female.

The suspect reportedly used a knife and targeted the left upper chest of the deceased. The victim succumbed to his injuries.

According to the information provided by the Namibian Police, the 15year-old suspect, was swiftly apprehended, and efforts are underway to locate her parents.

The police report sheds light on a distressing backstory. The suspect's

boyfriend had been assaulted by three men the previous night, who not only attacked him but also threatened harm to the suspect, including threats to cut open her stomach to remove her pregnancy.

Feeling threatened and vulnerable, the suspect allegedly decided to carry a knife for self-defense when in public spaces.

Tragically, a case of mistaken identity unfolded when the suspect encountered the deceased on the

Van Rooyen acknowledged the challenging nature of the SPCA staff's often thankless job, describing it as emotionally straining but essential work that provides hope to the animals in their care.

Deputy Junior Mayor of Walvis Bay, Gabriel Rabanus, added that these new additions represent a significant milestone in the SPCA's

commitment to the well-being of animals.

"As advocates for animal welfare, the Walvis Bay SPCA has tirelessly worked to create a safe environment. With the upgraded kennels and Playpark, we now have a stateof-the-art facility providing comfort, stimulation, and social interaction for our furry companions."

Rabanus added that the play park and upgraded boarding kennels will serve as a temporary home for animals in need, ensuring they receive the necessary love, attention, and comfort during their stay at the SPCA. The Walvis Bay SPCA is currently home to about 120 cats and dogs.

The Walvis Bay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has officially opened its new boarding kennels and play park on its premises.

Quinton van Rooyen, Chairperson of the Walvis Bay SPCA, stated that this project has been in progress for the past two years.

"We recognised the need to upgrade the kennels, providing a safe space over the holidays for people to bring their animals, where they are fed and engaged in activities, instead of leaving them in the care of neglectful individuals."

The play park was established for the animals to

socialise and interact, offering them a less lonely time than being confined to kennels.

The kennels and play park are named after two dedicated volunteers of the Walvis Bay SPCA: Justine Polster and Cheslin Cloete. Van Rooyen expressed gratitude for their consistent efforts, walking dogs every Saturday and Sunday and performing tasks that others may not be willing

The Walvis Bay SPCA is currently home to about 120 cats and dogs.

ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE PORT OF WALVIS BAY SOUTH PORT NEW MAIN ENTRANCE GATE PROJECT UPDATE NO.2: NOTICE OF CLOSURE OF RIKUMBI KANDANGA LEVEL CROSSING ON 17 JANUARY 2024 RELOCATION OF THE ROAD OVER RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSING AT RIKUMBI KANDANGA ROAD AS PART OF THE PLANNED NEW PORT ENTRANCE GATE PROJECT – PORT OF WALVIS BAY This communique serves to inform port users, interested and affected parties, the Walvis Bay business community and the public at large, of the progress on the new main gate complex project that is currently ongoing, as well as regarding the upcoming closure of the Rikumbi Kandanga level crossing.

In line with the Port of Walvis Bay South Port Master Plan, Namport commenced with the planning and design of the NEW ENTRANCE GATE Project in 2010. The project was necessitated due to the capacity constraints at the current Port main gate which was designed and built in 1999. This gate has already reached its capacity in terms of traffic flow that can be accommodated. The Port has experienced a steady increase in traffic volumes through the main gate over the past couple of years that have resulted in traffic congestions at the main gate and especially during peak times. This congestion at the main gate is only expected to become worse with time and hence the need to implement the New Main Gate project.

Throughout the planning and design process for this project, Namport have collaborated closely with the Walvis Bay Municipality so as to ensure alignment with regards to town planning on roads leading to and from the port entrance gate.

In brief, the project consists of the following components: 1. Construction of a temporary truck staging area – completed in 2012 2. Relocation of the Transnamib carriage and wagon depot to make way for a new five lane entrance gate – completed in 2016 3. Construction of a new road over rail level crossing opposite Railway Street, in order to close the Rikumbi Kandanga Road level crossing – completed in 2023.

4. Construction of the actual new main gate complex and permanent truck staging area with ancillary buildings and road work a. Construction of building works – currently ongoing and expected to be completed by July 2024; b. Construction of permanent truck staging area – to commence in July 2024 and completion by end of 2025; 5. Conversion of the existing main gate into an exit-only gate – planned for 2025; 6. Construction of a pedestrian bridge over the Railway line in Rikumbi Kandanga Road – planned to commence in 2026 As part of the Environmental Management Plan for the project, consultation with the public and identified interested and affected parties (I&APs) e.g. neighbouring landowners, local authorities, environmental groups, civic associations and communities, were performed. I&APs were given the opportunity to comment on the potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed development and to identify additional issues which they feel should be addressed in the EMP. A public meeting was conducted on the 4th of July 2017 in Walvis Bay where the project was presented in full including the closure of the Rikumbi Kandanga Level crossing.

The public participation process for the EMP was advertised in two Newspapers, The Namibian (15 and 22 June 2017) and the Namib Times (16 and 23 June 2017). Site notices were placed at selected locations in the vicinity of the project area and notification letters were either hand delivered or emailed to identified I&APs. An Environmental Clearance Certificate was subsequently issued to Namport on 29 January 2020.

In short, the relocation of the road over rail level crossing in Rikumbi Kandanga Road was necessitated due to the following main reasons: 1. To have seamless traffic flow from the truck staging area into the ports' new main entrance gate; 2. To provide space for the main gate complex on the Namport rail reserve; 3. To improve safety by moving the level crossing out of the shunting zone of the railway marshalling yard and thus also reducing the formation of long vehicle queues on the roads brought about by trains shunting through the level crossing.

The following two illustrations are extracts from the Environmental Management Plan of the project which was compiled by Geo Pollution Technologies in August 2017.

Finally, the Rikumbi Kandanga road over railway level crossing will therefore be closed permanently on 17 January 2024.

Walvis Bay Mayor’s Festive Season’s Greetings The festive season is upon us, and everyone is beaming with excitement to share wonderful memories with friends and loved ones.

The end of the year is also a time of reflection on the previous year as well as a time for setting the plans for the new year in motion. While this year may have had its challenges, we are proud of the significant steps and milestones we achieved.

Some of the highlights were: · Relocation of the first residents to Farm 37. · Upgrade and re-route sewer lines in Sandwich Street and Mars Street, which will significantly improve sewerage flow in Kuisebmond. · The Fire Emergency service started operating on a 24-hour basis. · We hosted the first-ever Maritime Festival, which a celebration of the indispensable contribution of the maritime industry to Namibia's economic growth and development. · Through the help of donors, we raised N$ 919 850.00 at the Mayoral Fundraising Gala Dinner. · My selection as a member of the Regional Mayors Forum of the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (Com SSA).

Gingerbread Cookie Trifle with Spiced Eggnog Cream

Ingredients: 1 package of gingerbread cookies 2 cups heavy cream 1 cup eggnog ½ cup powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg Whipped cream for topping Gingerbread cookie crumbs for garnish Instructions: 1. Prepare the Gingerbread: Bake or buy gingerbread cookies. Break them into bite-sized pieces and set aside.

As the year draws to a close, FNB Namibia reminds customers to stay vigilant of banking fraud and cool down the heat on scams that are on the increase this time of the year.

“Scams which target your bank account are getting increasingly sophisticated and more widespread.

Whilst we play our part to ensure that your money is secure, there are additional steps that you can take to keep your security details and consequently your bank balance safe,” FNB Namibia Forensic Manager Ingrid Katjiukua says.

Katjiukua explains that fraudsters are organised and may choose their target and the type of fraud based upon re-search of your online profile, internet spending habits and/or social media. “Fraudsters will go to extraordinary lengths to make you believe that they are genuine and often rely on mani-

pulation attics to get you to give them your banking information.

They employ various complex strategies to stop you from becoming wise to their tricks, but we can help you identify the different types of fraud and scams” she says.

Katjiukua says despite the dynamic nature of fraud, customers can be better prepared to prevent it if they pay careful attention to the following warning signs: Always verify and report suspicious transactions Whatever story is used, there is usually a sense of urgency and persistence about the payment customers are asked to make because the fraudster does not want you to stop, think and verify the transaction. If you are in

doubt about a particular payment or suspect you may have been the victim of fraud, get in touch with us right away.

Never disclose sensitive information such as passwords and PINs to anyone Internet and cellphone banking make banking more convenient and easily accessible.

However, customers still need to take precautions to protect themselves against fraudulent transactions by ensuring that they are familiar with our digital platforms.

“Do not under any circumstances reveal your secret access code/ PIN/ password or other unique means of personal identification to anyone, and especially not to someone claiming to be from the bank, internet service provi-

der or any other institution without first verifying this information as this can be used to access your electronic banking facility and scam you of your hard-earned money. Change any of these immediately if you believe that someone may know your secret access code/ PIN/password or other unique means of personal identification.

Additionally, do not use the browser facility to store your banking pass-word in order to avoid having to enter it each time you transact using Internet banking, as this can make it easier for fraudsters to access,” Katjiukua says.

Marketplace scams can also turn into physical threats or unsafe inpers on encounters when people agree to meet with a scammer in an unknown location.

Beware of phishing and smishing scams Phishing fraud involves sending fraudulent emails to unsuspecting bank customers to obtain their confidential internet banking access codes and passwords. The email ad-

dresses used by the fraudsters often seem genuine, as they imply that the email was sent from a legitimate financial institution. Smishing is also a reality were customers receive sms notifications with what seem to be communication from their bank followed by a call under false pretenses whereby they are manipulated into sharing their PIN or OTP. Fraudsters phrase the email in an attempt to lure the recipient into providing confidential information on the spot either by replying or by means of clicking on a

If the recipient responds to such an email by entering or clicks on the link provided in the email, a pop-up window will appear requesting him/her to enter his/her confidential internet banking access details. This window usually appears to be the bank's legitimate website - but it is not.

"Protecting yourself is not simply limited to your bank card, but also includes being observant and practicing safe banking behaviour all round, online, at ATMS and over the phone. It is important to remember that fraudsters are always looking for ways to scam people so customers must be multiple steps ahead with adequate safety measures to ensure that they are safe from fraud this festive season,” concluded Katjiukua.

Keep cool and safe this summer The festive season is here, and at the coast, it is associated with great weather, braais, and swimming.

In Walvis Bay, the Esplanade Swimming Pool is open daily, Mondays to Fridays from 11:00 – 18:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 to 18:00.

Entrance fees are N$30 for adults, N$23 for children aged 7 – 16, while pensioners and children under six years enter for free. The Dolphin Park swimming pool is also open daily from 10:00 - 18:00 with entrance fees of N$35 for adults and N$18 for children under 16.

At all the beaches and swimming pools, Monarch Lifeguard & Rescue are offering lifeguard services in Walvis Bay as well as countrywide.

Marthin Muyenga, owner of Monarch Lifeguard & Rescue, shares water safety tips to prevent drowning incidents during the festive season.

1. Be aware of your own and your children's swimming abilities. If you or your child are not strong swimmers, consider taking swimming lessons or staying in shallow water or safety zones where you can touch the bottom.

2. Keep a close eye on children and inexperienced swimmers when they are in or near water.

3. Avoid consuming alcohol or drugs when planning to swim or engage in water activities.

Alcohol can impair

judgment, coordination, and reaction time, increasing the risk of accidents and drown-ing.

4. No diving headfirst.

Jumping or diving headfirst into water can cause serious injuries, including spinal injuries, paralysis, and drowning. It's best to enter the water feet first.

5. Be cautious on coastal lines. Driving along coastal areas can be hazardous, especially during high tides and rough waves, including not driving in fast-moving water during the rainy season.

6. Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can be a lifesaver in emergencies. In case of an accident or drowning, prompt CPR can make a significant difference in the outcome.

7. Wear appropriate safety gear visible during water activities such as boating, kayaking, or jet skiing; always wear a properly fitting life jacket or personal flotation device.

8. Pay attention to warning signs, flags, and lifeguard instructions at beaches and pools.

Obey any posted rules and regulations.

9. Pools and beaches must have certified life-guards on duty during business hours.

10. Parents must not allow their kids to use empty bottles as flotation devices at the beach; this gives a false sense of water safety to kids and puts their lives at risk if it happens to

fall off in deep water.

11. Open water buckets, toys around water bodies, and balls have been deadly traps for toddlers in this era.

12. Beachgoers must refrain from littering and breaking bottles at the beach.

13. Those with chronic illnesses are advised to swim with a buddy or alert the lifeguard on duty about your situation if you are intending to swim.

14. If you find out that your kid is missing at the pool or beach, report the matter as soon as possible.

15. Use reaching assistance to help someone in water difficulties if you are not trained. For example, you can use anything that can extend your reach to the victim.

NB: Never put all your hopes into people at the pool or beach helping you in deep water difficulty; lots of people are not trained in water rescue. There-fore, take extra care not to be a victim. Our certified Monarch Lifeguard and Emergency service will be available countrywide for all your private pool, beach, or recreational activities events.

In the spirit of giving, Promiseland, in collaboration with Kasi Socks, opened its doors in the final week before schools closed, turning their space into a haven of generosity.

With an array of extra donations including toys, clothes, shoes, and more, they created a festive display alongside sweet treats.

The highlight ? Every child who visited during this period had the opportunity to choose a "gift" of their liking.

In an interview, the Project Coordinator, Jenny Esterhuizen told the newspaper, more than 800 children walked through Promiseland's doors, creating a heartening scene of joy and gratitude. “In collaboration with Kasi Socks, a remarkable 480 pairs of socks were distributed, adding a touch of warmth to the holiday season,” Esterhuizen said. The day was further enriched by making it a delightful experience for the guests of the soup kitchen. Andrias, who also visited the Promiseland soup kitchen as a child together with his sister, expressed his desire to bring the sock production and revenue to Namibia. Currently, all manufacturing is done in South Africa and imported.

Gondwana Cares has also played a role in assisting with new sock designs, contributing to the initiative's success. This collaborative effort between Promisland and Kasi Socks created a memorable experience for hundreds of children and guests.

This time of the year is a time to extend gratitude and reflect on the extraordinary and fulfilling year that was. As we prepare to lay down our tools in anticipation of a joyful holiday season in the company of our wonderful friends and families, it is quintessential to highlight the success and the collective progress we have made.

This year has been a testament to the power of unity and hard work.We are greatly honoured by our resident's active participation and support through all of our endeavours as we continue to overcome the various obstacles we are faced with. Over the past twelve months, we have achieved remarkable progress in various areas that have positively impacted our city's economic advancement.

Our commitment to inclusive and sustainable development has led to significant progress in key areas such as housing, infrastructure development, education, safety, and security with aims to build a thriving city. Affordable housing remains at the top of our agenda as we strive to ensure that every resident has a place, they can call home.

Over the course of the last couple of months, council has handed over approximately 1 500

homes and ownership certificates to residents of Swakopmund. Council has also successfully undertaken the mission to provide electricity and setting up 10 sanitation centres in the DRC informal settlement, with the aim to improve the community's living standards and promote hygiene and good health. Moreover, Swakopmund aspires to become a leading educational hub, offering unlimited career opportunities to the youth hence we welcomed the groundbreaking construction of IUM's research centre which is well underway. These are indeed promising and exciting times for Swakopmund and great steps toward becoming a one stop destination which offers a diverse range of fundamental development initiatives. We are committed to working tirelessly to represent our resident's best interests and we look forward to achieving all of our goals and delivering the best municipal services.

As an unrivalled holiday destination and centre of adventure, we remain consistent in ensuring that our residents and holiday makers enjoy their vacation safely and worry free. Whether you want to take a stroll by the beach, engage in adrenaline filled activities or relax at your favourite establishments, safety comes first. We have taken safety precautions such as an increased number of men from the Tourism Protection Unit to patrol around the

CBD. The Special Reserve Force will also be deployed to assist with maintaining law and order. Furthermore, council has also beefedup security cameras installed in key locations around the town. All of these measures are to ensure that residents and visitors have a wonderful and memorable holiday experience in our scenic city which offers so much relaxation and adventure. Not to forget, for those who aren't too familiar with our 'many' one-way streets, we have touched up on the road markings with a fresh coat of paint for your driving pleasures.

True to our tradition, one way to kick-start the festive season is the much-anticipated annual Swakopmund Street Fair. This is a perfect, fun-filled event for the entire family, friends, and the community at large to get together and make up for lost time. As we gather with our loved ones to celebrate the holiday season, let us remember to be responsible and take care of one another. The health and well-being of our community are of utmost importance, and by following guidelines and protocols, you can ensure that everyone can enjoy the holidays safely.

Christmas came early for senior citizens Annually, the Swakopmund Municipality treats the Senior Citizens with food hampers, and sometimes, depending on the availability of funds, they are treated to lunch as well.

This year, over 1 300 food parcels were handed out to the town's senior citizens.

Last month, on Senior Citizens Day the Swakopmund Municipality led by the Mayor, Dina Namubes distributed food parcels to the elders of the town, a gesture that embodies the council's commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of those who have contributed so much to the community.

In her speech, during the handover of the parcels, Namubes said these food parcels are more than just a collection of essential items. “They are a symbol of our collective care and concern for those who may need a helping hand.

In each parcel, you will find not only nutritious and thought-

fully selected items but also the warmth of our community's embrace.”

Namubes further said the senior citizens have weathered the storms of time and their wisdom and experiences have shaped the fabric of the community. “As we hand over these food parcels, we are not just providing food; we are expressing our gratitude for the rich tapestry they have woven into the history of our community.”

Namubes said, “the well-being of our senior citizens is a top priority, and we provide resources, support, and initiatives that contribute to their physical, emotional, and mental health.

This includes social activities and access to essential services.”

According to Namubes, Swakopmund Council's commitment to senior citizens has been reflected in various projects this year as they hosted the Mother's Day and the Father's Day celebrations for the elders to spend time with them and show their love and appreciation.

The office further aims to create spaces where senior citizens can age gracefully and with the respect they deserve.

Namubes expressed her appreciation to Orano Mining Namibia who donated the amount of N$20 000 towards this project and Spar for their continuous support and additional food parcels.

Visiting The Coast This Festive Season?

Here Are The Do's And Don'ts It's that time of the year, when everybody is looking forward to a remarkable festive season at Namibia's central coastal region. Unfortunately, holiday activities can have a devastating effect on our environment if we don't stay within the rules set to protect our natural beauty and biodiversity.

The coastal areas fall within a series of contiguous protected areas, namely the Skeleton Coast Park, the Dorob National Park, the Namib Naukluft Park and the Sperrgebiet National Park. By following all rules and regulations, you are assisting in the conservation of our coast and its biodiversity thus ensuring sustainability.

The Do's Familiarise yourself with the Parks' Rules and Regulations and the regulations related to the harvesting of marine resources.

Adhere to all the municipal By-laws in place.

Obtain a written authorization from Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) offices for en-

tering or camping in all parks and adhere to the park rules.

In the National Parks, remain on demarcated routes and do not venture into other areas without a qualified guide. Obey any legal order or instruction given by a Law-enforcement Officers.

Comply with the instructions on signboards, pamphlets or communicated in any manner.

Enjoy the dunes between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay with your 4x4 / quad bike / motorbike in the designated 'Off-Road Vehicle' (ORV) area (central and southern part of the dune belt) where a free permit from MET is required.

Inside the ORV areas, stay on the dunes and avoid

slip faces, gravel plains and vegetated areas.

In the Dorob National Park: Motocross bikes or quadbikes are ONLY allowed to be driven on the beaches between Swakopmund and Henties Bay, and on proclaimed roads and clearly marked MET tracks and roads.

Obtain your permit for harvesting any Marine Resources from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR). Ensure to respect bag limits for fish, rock lobster and white mussels.

Ensure that tour operators whether in aircraft, boat or car keep a safe distance from wildlife.

The Dont's Do not drive off the road except on demarcated ORV areas– adhere to legal requirements. Off-road driving negatively impacts on the desert gravel plains, the lichen fields, and the breeding birds and destroy the aesthetic beauty of the area. Dune driving is dangerous and were allowed should be undertaken with a professional, qualified guide.

Off-loading of quad bike and motorized bike between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund is only prohibited at designated off-loading areas (the Dune Belt between Langstrand and Walvis Bay).

Vehicles and people on foot are not allowed in closed or exclusionary areas such as the Damara Tern breeding areas, Swakop River, Lichen fields.

No overnight camping is allowed on the beaches or in the dunes without permission from the Ministry of Environment & Tourism (MET).

Do not leave your litter behind - use refuse bins and skips provided or take your rubbish home. That also include discarded fishing line, hooks, bait wrapping, empty bottles and tins.

Do not drive over vegetation–small animals and vegetation are essentials for the desert ecosystem, your tracks will destroy them and leave permanent scars on mudflats.

Do not leave bait or fish on the beach: Either take it home or return it to the sea. Fish and bait left on the beaches attracts scavengers like jackals and gulls that predate on other biodiversity.

Do not feed wildlife – fed wildlife become dependent on “hand-outs” and become aggressive when no food is given to them.

Do not remove, collect, pick, destroy, tamper with or damage any egg, nest or burrow, tree, plant, mineral or any other object of botanical, zoo logical, geological, archaeological, historical importance.

Pikkewyn Land Pre-Primer en Dagsorg het onlangs hul jaarlikse konsert aangebied. Die tema vir hierdie jaar se konsert was 'Ons Gaan op Vakansie'.

Chanel Theart van Pikkewyn Land vertel dat die konsert 'n pure "vakansie-vibe" gehad het, en dit het deurgaans uitgespeel met elke klas wat opgetree het. Een van die hoogtepunte van die vertoning was 'n spesiale optrede waar die pappas saam gedans het. "Ons hou daarvan

om ouers deel van Pikkewynland te maak.

Dit is vir ons baie belangrik dat ouers 'n aktiewe rol speel in die groei van hul kinders.

Daarom het ons besluit om die pappas uit te nooi. Hulle het nie net die uitdaging aanvaar nie, maar het ook nie geaarsel om die beste

daarvan te maak nie.

Ons het heerlik saam gelag."

Pikkewyn Land PrePrimêr, wat in 2018 in Walvisbaai gestig is, het tans 120 kindertjies tussen die ouderdom van twee maande en sewe jaar oud. Die skool bied ook nasorg aan vir kinders van graad 0 tot graad 7.

Arysteq Foundation Empowers Aspiring Minds through its Bursary Opportunity In the pursuit of higher education, a journey often marked by both enlightenment and challenges, the Arysteq Foundation stands as a beacon of support for aspiring students. The Arysteq Foundation bursary program was launched in December 2020.

Acknowledging the transformative impact education can have on individuals and communities, the foundation proudly announces the launch of its annual bursary opportunity for the 2024 academic year.

Andrew Jansen, a Trustee of the Arysteq Foundation, expresses the motivation behind the initiative, stating, “We saw the need for students to study in various fields as our economy requires people with these specific training or educational backgrounds.”

This initiative is designed to empower students who possess the passion and potential to create a positive impact on the world through education.

Empowered by financial stability, bursary recipients can focus on their studies, unlocking their academic potential. This not only improves individual academic performance but also contributes to the overall enhancement of educational standards. The ripple effect extends to the broader community

as a more educated populace positively impacts societal progress.

Over the past three years, the Arysteq Foundation has awarded annually, bursaries to 12 deserving students in total in the fields of Economics, Finance, Accounting, Financial Mathematics, and Actuarial Science the chance to pursue their tertiary education, both in Namibia and South Africa.

Beneficiaries like Tina Kadhila expressed her gratitude, emphasising, “This scholarship has been a lifeline for both me and my family, alleviating a significant financial burden and allowing me to pursue my dreams without the constant worry of financial stress.”

Beyond financial assistance, the Arysteq Foundation goes a step further by offering recipients opportunities to gain real-world experience through various internships. Jansen explains, “Combined with the high youth unemployment, we felt that we

could create an opportunity for these students to one day work in the fields of asset management, stockbroking, and corporate finance.”

The Bursary Opportunity is open to students from disadvantaged backgrounds pursuing qualifications in Actuarial Science, Financial Mathematics, Accounting, and Economics. For the 2024 academic year, the bursary will cover tuition, books, travel, and accommodation, further breaking down barriers to education that often prevent talented individuals from pursuing higher education.

As the Arysteq Foundation continues its commitment to empowering minds and shaping a brighter future, the annual bursary opportunity stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and the unwavering belief in the potential of every aspiring student.
