The demolishing work is currently being conducted by a contractor called Afrina, who was tasked by government to construct 100 new houses. This was confirmed by a businessman, who called
himself Charles, who is in charge of the company Afrina. “Government told me last year to build new houses. We will build over 100 houses,” he said to namib times. Charles added that the

Walvis Bay hosts NAMAs for the first time Piquet Jacobs
It has been officially announced by Walvis Bay Council and MTC that the 7th Namibian Annual Music Awards will be proudly hosted in Walvis Bay on 2829 April. In a press conference held yesterday, Walvis Bay Mayor, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried, expressed his excitement to have the 2nd biggest nationally televised event to take place in Walvis Bay. “I think we can all agree the power of music has the ability to break boundaries and unite people from all walks of life and this is what makes it magical, this is why we as the Port City of Walvis Bay have welcomed the NAMAs. Having said this, I would like to call on the business community of Walvis Bay to support this event in the form of sponsorships. In the same breath I would also like to call on the community of Walvis Bay and those from other towns to come and celebrate our local artists at this event”, Wilfried commented. “So much has taken place behind the scenes since we called for entries in October 2016, we have received a record number of 865 entries for this year's awards which not only demonstrates the growing interest, but also the endeared respect that the music industry has for the NAMA platform and its consistent governance procedures”, Executive Chairperson of the NAMA's, Tim Ekandjo, commented recently. “We can assure that we want to present a world

Gawie Rousseau, one of Delta Group's partners, was not available for comment. His phone went unanswered. Delta Group initially got the tender to construct 400 houses under the Mass Housing Development Program, but ran into financial trouble in 2016. The amount of houses to be constructed by the Delta Group were reduced to 43, some of which were still in construction phase when Afrina took over. Construction of the houses by the Delta Group was halted in November 2016 due to the company not being able to pay its workers (namib times reported). The workers initially threatened to burn down the houses, if they would not receive their salaries. During tense negotiations on site the workers “confiscated” the car of the managing director Koos Gouws and kept it as surety. Instead of utilizing bricks, the houses by the Delta Group were built using an alternative material combining cement with Styrofoam. These houses were found to be “humanely uninhabitable” though. Despite numerous efforts to get a comment from the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, these remained unfruitful. When namib times visited the site the workers carrying out the demolishing work said that they are employed by a company called Xu Construction, but referred all queries to Charles from Afrina. They said that they are taking down everything, leaving the foundation of the previous houses. “We are waiting for the material to arrive, so we can build the new houses,” said one worker.

Fish labelled with the blue MSC label fulfils a list of criteria set by MSC and comes from a sustainable fishery that has met the MSC fisheries standard. According to Matti Amukwa, Chairperson of the Namibian Hake Association, the process of MSC certification has been in the pipeline for a number of years. “This workshop is proof that MSC certification is moving forward and will open new markets. It will enable us to get real value for our fish,” he said. Amukwa added that the process has been “long overdue.” While Esau reiterated during his speech that Namibia is managing its fisheries on a sustainable manner, he said that “some people are questioning this.” “It is proven that we are managing our fisheries on a sustainable manner and have some of the best practices in the world”, he said. Should Namibia be successful in the MSC certification process, the minister expressed interest in expanding this certification to other fisheries like horse mackerel. The process until certification is expected to take between 12 and 18 months. Once certification is achieved, it is the hope that hake will achieve a greater value in northern European countries, including Switzerland, Germany, Austria to name but a few.

Swakop Dam is the place to hang out over weekends
Since the sand mining pits in the Swakop River in the vicinity of the smallholding Richthofen were filled with water, the new big “lake� has become a popular spot for daytrips. Over the past weekend many Swakopmund residents set up camp next to the lake for the day and enjoyed a swim in the warm water. Since the pit has been filled, sand mining operations at that particular spot in the river have stopped.
Diecast car collectors want to establish a club If you are an avid collector of diecast cars, planes and trains and you happen to live at the coast, then this coming Saturday should be treated as a very important date. A number of enthusiasts, who among themselves have collections of model cars and planes of all scales numbering in the tens of thousands together, have decided to found a die cast model hobby club. The club can become an important platform for hobbyists to interact, exchange ideas and from everyone to learn from one another and assist where possible. An informal meeting to discuss the way forward takes place at 11:00 this coming Saturday at the Walvis Bay Angling Club's hall. It is important to notify Mr Andre Everts if you want to attend: 081 201 3733. This club is not intended only for Walvis Bay. Collectors from other coastal towns and for that matter from anywhere in Namibia are welcome. Note: there will be a cash bar and restaurant should you wish to buy refreshments.
The bulk carrier Yellowstone A total of 13 500 tons of bulk wheat will be offloaded in the port of Walvis Bay next week. The bulk carriers Yellowstone and Bright Sky is scheduled alongside respectively on 19 and 20 March and will discharge 6500 tons (Yellowstone) and 7000 tons of wheat.

Speed and failure to adhere to road sign cause of this accident Piquet Jacobs Lunch hour traffic was obstructed on Friday in Walvis Bay's 6th street, after two vehicles were involved in a collision on the 12th Road juncture. A combination of speed and a driver failing to adhere to the stop sign where 12th Road connects with 6th Street resulted in this accident. The one vehicle, a taxi, was flipped over. The taxi turned into 6th Street from 12th Road, but allegedly did so failing to stop first. It placed the vehicle in the path of an oncoming pick-up resulting in a rear-end collision. The taxi was occupied by the driver and one passenger. Both were evacuated by the ambulance. The driver of the pick-up sustained no injuries. ¡ In other accidents a truck overturned in the Longbeach vicinity and had to be lifted upright by crane. On Saturday morning a light sedan overturned just south of the Aphrodite turn off and yesterday a black landcruiser allegedly caused another light sedan vehicle to overturn at the turn off to Aphrodite beach. The driver was injured and taken to hospital.

Why it is important to study hard at school

Namibian students should study hard so that they are ready when study opportunities in other countries become available. This is the message of 19-year old Martino Swarts, a former Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) student, currently studying Mandarin (Chinese) at a university in China. Swarts is one half of the former NUST duo who were awarded full scholarships last year by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to study marine engineering in the People's Republic of China. As part of this bursary, they would have to study the Chinese language Mandarin for a year. “Mandarin isn't like any other language because it has tones and mixing up those tones can dramatically change the meaning of the word. But we have to as it will equip us w i t h t h e re l e v a n t language proficiency when embarking on our engineering course, later this year,” Starts says. And therefore, the students spend some eight hours daily in lectures. “But these are two 4-hour lectures” Swarts says. They only have two lessons of four hours each daily, which can be challenging especially coming from an environment where an hour lecture is the longest. “Concentration was a big problem at first, but we learnt to cope with the strict discipline real quick, as we have something to prove to both ourselves, our p a re n t s a n d o u r country.” Swarts explains that he commuted from Okahandja daily to attend his INSTEP (bridging course) at NUST and that for both him and Oiva Wilbard
(the second bursary recipient), the financial burdens on their parents were almost unbearable when the opportunity for the bursaries presented themselves. “Mr Usi //Hoebeb from CHEC's Public Relations Company, Jezreel Communications a p p ro a c h e d N U S T management with the offer of two full bursaries to study marine engineering last year. We had to undergo a stringent selection process including interviews with CHEC's Management thereafter we only had less than two months before we left the country,” Swarts says. Some of their family members and fellow students at NUST were worried with the short lead time before leaving and how they would adapt so quick. “The human mind is conditioned to adapt to any condition and although it took us a while to understand Chinese culture, we are now fully immersed in the Chinese way of living, which we find completely amazing”. Swarts encourages any student who gets an opportunity to study abroad to consider this seriously. “Of course, you will have to do due diligence on the benefactor to ensure that this is genuine but once having done that grab this opportunity with both hands. Do it for you, your family and your country,” Starts concluded. He aims to come back to Namibia after his studies to

Walvis Bay is a major producer of salt and annual production is set to reach 1 million tonnes per annum in the foreseeable future. The bulk carrier Svenborg is also expected alongside later this week to load 3000 metric tonnes of salt, followed by the bulk carrier Greta on 17 March to load 1000 metric tonnes of salt and Black Rhino on 27 March to load 1500 metric tonnes. Calls for three year ban of pilchard catches The Namibia Chamber of Environment (NCE) has called on the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau, to introduce a moratorium on pilchard fishing as an urgent measure – for at least three years or until the stock has recovered to a sustainable level. In a statement released this week the Namibia Chamber of Environment has questioned the decision by Bernhard Esau, who admitted taking “a gamble” when he announced a quota of 14 000 tons for pilchard for this fishing season (namib times reported). “Minister Esau is gambling with the ecological stability, bio-diversity, productivity and economy of Namibia's marine ecosystem,” NCE charges. Heavy loaded truck tips over A truck tipped over outside Swakopmund on the B2 as it was taking a turn onto the backroad to Henties Bay yesterday morning. The Quiver Tree Investments truck was reportedly transporting sand and when approaching the back road, it was believed the driver took the turn too fast and with the heavy load of sand, caused the truck to tip over and land on its side. The driver was the sole occupant of the truck, but fortunately was not injured. De Duine SS. assembled on Monday, 27 February to host the student exchange program, handover of athletic trophies and the national colours. The events started off with the national and school anthem, followed by a scripture reading and prayer offered by Mr A Van Wyk. Medwin Swartbooi soon after introduced visiting LRC members from different schools namely Duneside High, Duinesig Combined, Kuisebmund Secondary and Tutaleni Secondary. This year De Duine welcomed a new member; Dolphine Elementry School to the program. The exchange program however started back in 2015. It is a platform where learners can exchange ideas and see how other schools operate in terms of academy, sports and cultural activities. Teachers noted it was a successfull event, the following day, De Duine had their chance to visit the other schools. Mr Van Wyk assisted by Mr Gamiseb; sport co-ordinator did the handing over the trophies for best in different age groups, team spirit and winning house. Ashiya Otta and Elrico Januarie were of the fortunate ones to receive Namibian colours on their blazers for their Namibian representation in sports. Veikko Shakapala, headboy of De Duine made the last closing remarks on how difficult life is and we are the ones controlling it by noting during his speech, “Everybody wants to live a perfect life. We all want great results at the end of the year and a satisfying job after our studies. Nobody wants to struggle in life, but that is how life is. You will have difficulties getting anything you desire. Response to documentation presented by Namibia Marine Phosphate (NMP) 1. Over a considerable time period we have sent to you at regular intervals concerns about the intention of NMP to mine phosphate in Namibia's marine environment. All these concerns are serious. They are part of our records and it is assumed that they are part of your records as well and have been taken seriously. 2. Consequently they will not be repeated in this communication. 3. However, we do fully support the concerns which have been expressed lately about NMP's intentions and the documents on it presented to you. 4. Submissions you have received in the past few days from concerned citizens list amongst others the following
substantive points: - The EIA document fails to admit that phosphate mining would greatly destroy the habitat, microbes, food and ecosystem services in the mining areas by dredging vast areas of seabed; - It is far-fetched to leave environmental monitoring and mitigation to NMP itself; - The 2012 study on which you are relying has never been approved. At that time it was deemed merely a desktop study. It still remains the same today; and - Studies submitted by NMP supposedly compiled by “independent scientists” are actually papers from environmentalists paid by NMP. 5. The following expressions of concern are valid and you are
urged to take due note of them as they were all sent to you previously: a. The National Union of Namibian Workers, NUNW - and its affiliates strongly condemn marine phosphate mining plans. b. The statement by the Walvis Bay Environmental Management Advisory Forum (WEMAF) in November 2016 in which it placed its opposition to NMP's phosphate plans on record with a letter to your Minister. In it the Forum refers to the devastating consequences and that it would be unwise to allow such mining. c. The concerns expressed by 15 world renown marine scientists in their joint paper entitled “Defining 'serious harm' to the marine environment in the context of deep seabed mining”. It was published in October 2016. d. The statement by the Chairperson of the Namibian Economic and Social Trust issued in October 2016. e. The expert views presented by Dr. Sylvia

Swimmers Ansone Boshoff and Phillip Seidler booked their places in a Namibian swimming team that competes in South Africa later this year. This is after pristine performances in the nationals held in Windhoek from 23 to 26 February. Swimming clubs from across Namibia participated in the nationals. Bank Windhoek however was the major sponsor to this event. Ansone Boshoff and Phillip Seidler are swimmers from the Swakopmund Dolphine Swimming Club. Ansone participated in the junior national championship and received 14 medals, whilst Phillip received gold in the events he participated.
Last Sunday saw JCCA take on Sparta in the Coastal 40 over League at Sparta. Sparta won the toss and opted to field. JCCA would have done the same as there appeared to be something in the wicket for the bowlers. Sparta quickly had JCCA on the back foot after Helmut Mack picked up 3 wickets in the first 3 overs of the match. Dian Neethling and Scott Winborn were then at the crease and stuck around frustrating the opening bowlers. Colin Peake came into the bowling attack and completely destroyed the JCCA team, picking up six wickets. JCCA was bowled out for 70 runs in 20 overs. Nian Grobler and Colin Peake opened the batting for Sparta. They stood their ground and showed no mercy to the JCCA bowlers. Kudus doen dit - naelskraps Korrespondent
Albei Kudu spanne het Saterdag wen seges oor hul buurspan behaal met twee hardverdiende oorwinnings. Kudus 2 het swaar gelewe teen ‘n baie sterk pak voorspelers en moes met baie min balbesit tevrede wees. Agterlangs was die talle hanteerfoute wat begaan was ‘n groot bron van kommer en kort dringende aandag. Ten spyte van die min balbesit is dit egter Kudus wat eerste bloed ruik toe Charlton Dreyer oor storm vir ‘n drie om Kudus met 7 -0 te laat voorloop. Walvis slaan egter onmiddellik terug met ‘n drie van hul eie om die telling gelykop te maak. Maar minute later slaan hulle weer toe om rustyd met 12 – 7 voor te loop. Sowat 10 minute na rustyd vergroot Walvis hul voorsprong toe hul weer agter Kudus se doellyn gaan kuier om hul voorsprong na 19 – 7 te rek. Zane Williams laat krimp die voorsprong met ‘n drie en plaas Kudus met 19 – 14 terug in die wedstryd. Athony Jevu teken twee vinnige drieë vir Kudus net daarna aan om Kudus 2 ‘n oorwinning van 2819 te besorg. Die wedstryd tussen die twee Eerste spanne was soos te verwagte genadeloos en was niks anders as ‘n tipiese derbie wedstryd nie. Die voorafgaande oproepe weke voor die wedstryd oor wie gaan wen en die feit dat talle Kudu spelers by Walvis
aangesluit het, het vir sy kwota drama gesorg. Soos verwag het die spelers ‘n alles behalwe welkome ontvangs by Kudu Park ontvang. Veral oud Kaptein, Chris Klassen en gewese afrigter Gawan Esterhuisen het kwaai deurgeloop, bygesê dit was by tye oordrewe en ongehoord en die Kudu bestuur sal iets drasties moet doen om hul skare te beheer want weke lank na die wedstryd is dit die bestuur wat sake moet beveg terwyl die oortreders van niks weet. Die wedstryd self soos genoem was ‘n tipiese derby met harde inklimspel van albei kante en ‘n voorval of twee van albei kante. Walvis neem die voortou in die 8ste minuut toe hulle ‘n strafskop deur die pale stuur om 30 voor te loop. Sowat 10 minute later bars gewese Kudu spelers Charlton Brussel as gevolg van
swak verdediging oor die doellyn om hul voorsprong na 8 – 0 te vegroot. Kudus slaan egter kort hierna terug Toe Paulo Andrews Kudus se eerste drie druk en Ulriato Lawrence verdoel om die telling na 7 – 8 te laat krimp. Albei spanne loods die een aanval na die ander maar kan nie verdere drieë inryg nie. Drie suksesvolle strafskoppe deur Kudus se Ulriato Lawrence laat loop Kudus 16 – 8 met rustyd voor. Herhaalde oortredings aan Kudus se kant veroorsaak dat hul binne die bestek van 1 minuut twee geelkaarte kry en verbete met 13 man moes keer so al wat hul kan. Walvis slaan egter munt uit hieraan toe aan hulle ‘n strafdrie toegestaan word om die telling na 16 – 15 te krimp. Nog ‘n drie sowat 5 minute later neem Walvis die voortou met 22-16. Met nog
sowat 15 minute oor druk Elton ‘n drie vir die tuisspan om Kudus weer met 22 – 23 te laat voorloop. Talle verbroude kanse om punte aan te teken deur albei spanne verhoed dat die telling verder groei. Kudus mis 2 strafskoppe en verbrou sowat drie kanse om drieë aan te teken. Percy Nash verbrou in die laaste sekonde nog ‘n strafskop met die skeidsregter wat daarna die eindfluitjie blaas. Walvis wat aanvanklik dink hulle het die wedstryd gewen spring hande in die lug en tot
met dan is alles nog in orde. Dit is eers nadat die skeidsregter beslis het dat Kudus gewen het dat chaos uitgebreek het. Terwyl spelers oor en weer woorde gewissel het het ‘n familietwis veroorsaak dat ‘n toeskouer sy neef ‘n vuishou toegedien het. ‘n Video wat ‘n plaaslike koerantman besluit het om op soiale media te plaas het skielik laat lyk asof die wedstryd ‘n groot bakleiery was. Ten spyte om eerder dit te plaas van wat op die veld gebeur het het hy verkies om die negatiewe te plaas wat na die
wed-stryd gebeur het. Maar video opnames sal wys wie rêrig die geniepsige span op die veld was. Wel as hy sensasie gesoek het, het hy sy minuut van “ fame“ ge-had. Sensasie kan egter baie maklik ‘n lelike nadraai hê en hy behoort daarvan bewus te wees. Wedstryde tussen die twee Klubs was nog altyd vol drama en stryery, hetsy dit op Jan Wilken, Atlantis of SFC was en nie net op Narraville soos beweer word nie. Dit wat gebeur het is allermins goed vir sport en moet met wortel en
tak uitgeroei word en die twee klubs se besture sal bymekaar moet kom om oplossings te vind daarvoor. Geen Walvis of Kudu speler was Saterdag op en van die veld in vuisgevegte betrokke nie maar dat onnodige skelwoorde en krutaal deur beide spanne se ondersteu-ners laat ‘n bitter smaak in die mond. Kudus speel komende naweek weer tuis teen Unam en dit sal as uit-daging vir die bestuur dien om op sekere areas te verbeter en hul naam in ere te herstel.

Adverse windy conditions saw the event called off. Many Namibian's who travelled to South Africa to take part in the event had to, like their counterparts from across the globe, swallow the disappointment and return home.
