Weekend of tragedy for Swakopmund ∙Fire razes house in Vineta ∙Resident killed by joy rider Isaac Chikosi A Swakopmund resident has been knocked over and killed by a man fleeing in a stolen vehicle at Karibib over the weekend. In another tragic incident a family's house was razed in a fire in Swakopmund's Vineta suburb on Saturday. The Karibib tragedy unfolded on Friday at around 17:45 in Karibib's Usab location in Kasinga Street. The owner of a Toyota pick-up went to sleep, only for a certain Kondjeni Mwatukange (22) to steal the keys to the vehicle and speeding off. Moments later after speeding off, Mwatukange crashed the vehicle into a stationery vehicle parked in Kasinga Street. Four people were busy repairing the vehicle and was knocked down by Mwatukange's vehicle. A certain Mr. Masen Awaseb (28) died of his injuries as a result. The victims, including the late Awaseb, are all residents of Swakopmund who visited Karibib. The accident did not stop Mwatukange. He again drove off at a high speed. This time however, his deadly joy ride came to an end when he crashed into a shack and in the process overturning the vehicle. Mwatukange then ran off and handed himself over to the Police on Saturday. He made a first appearance on a string of criminal charges in the Karibib magistrate's court yesterday, including driving the vehicle without a driving license. In the fire incident on Saturday it is reported a certain Miss M. Grobler was woken on Saturday afternoon at around 16:00 by her children stating frantically the house is on fire. Miss Grobler saw the rooms were already starting to fill with smoke. She ran to the living room and found the it on fire. The fire soon engulfed the house, leaving Grobler and her children no chance to save any valuables. Also see pictures on page 2.

Only weeks after an elephant ventured on the outskirts of Swakopmund, yet another unusual visitor were found venturing the holiday town’s streets. This time, over the weekend, it was a springbok which was promptly caught and relocated to spot far outside town where it can continue its natural existence, far from human activities. Tommy’s Tours, Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch and the municipal traffic authorities were thanked by the Swakopmund S.P.C.A. for rendering assistance to get the buck back to nature.
Walvis Bay residents robbed at guesthouse

A mother and her son endured horror moments at a guesthouse in Windhoek on Friday when they were confronted by three armed robbers. The thugs first tried to gain entry to the room breaking the door’s lock. When they were unsuccessful at that they broke a window and then confronted the mother and son, pointing at least one firearm at them and demanding their valuables. The woman’s name is withheld to protect her identity in the course of the Namibian Police hunting down the suspects.

Sharlien Tjambari Keeping Swakopmund clean is the responsibility of every resident. With this mindset a few residents recently started The Swakopmund Community Engagement group (SCE). The newly established group had a cleaning campaign in Swakopmund on 11 January between 10:00 and 13:00. SCE in collaboration with the Swakopmund municipality had 50 individuals taking part in this initiative. The group took to the streets of Mondesa and the DRC settlement. They cleaned every step of the way. Vadi Phil of the SCE described this act as the first of its kind. He said: “We at SCE are striving for a bigger and better clean-up next time. We aim for two massive clean-ups in Swakopmund twice a year. The group also tackles other issues affecting the community and assist wherever they can.

Eileen van der Schyff Hope of a good start to a new year and decade is crumbling with news of two babies, one a foetus and one a new-born, found at the Walvis Bay dumping site. Not only is dumping and abortion a crime, it is also inhumane. Both babies were found by public members who work at the dumping site. A male foetus was found on Monday 6 January and a new-
born girl was found on Wednesday 8 January. The foetus of approximately 28 weeks was found wrapped in a plastic bag. The body of a new-born full term girl was found only two days later among rubbish. Both public members alerted their friends who then contacted the police. No suspects are identified at this stage and no arrests have been made.
The Ministry of Gender Equality (Child and Welfare Services) made a provision in article 227 of the Child Protection Act that decriminalises abandonment in hopes to encourage mothers with unwanted babies to leave these babies unharmed at safe places. Baby dumping is a crime.

The end of the Festive Season is nearing, and the community members are pleased with the way drivers behaved during the holidays all thanks to the road safety campaigns which encouraged sober driving and the increase of police visibility. When approached by namib Road accidents reported times, a well trusted source said: countrywide between 30 “I am surprised that there were December 2019 and 1 January n o a ccidents on the 2020 revealed the following: Swakopmund/ Henties Bay road crashes were 47 with 105 road, this road is known as an injuries and 21 fatalities. accident zone, but maybe we Eight fatalities were recorded must thank the contractors who between 1-5 January this year tarred the road, they really did a from 34 crashes, 69 were good job ”. reported as injuries.
No maintenance on Walvis Bay street signs Eileen van der Schyff
Residents of Walvis Bay are starting to question the Municipality because of street signs in Walvis Bay not being maintained. One resident said: “So many signs are lying flat on the pavements next to the roads. It looks like the wood deteriorates over time with our harsh weather and the wind then blow these signs over. Some of these signs have been laying on the pavements for three months, so there are no excuses.” Residents are con-
cerned for visitors not knowing the town and the absence of these signs might cause confusion and even accidents. One resident was very disgusted about an
information board at the lagoon laying flat on the walkway. “What must foreigners visiting our lagoon think of our country?” She asked.

The success of Margareth Shikuyele

NOTICES
Eileen van der Schyff NOTICE
Even though Margareth Shikuyele struggled early in life with education and judgemental people that caused few people believing in her, she raised up and became the star she is today. Margareth was born and raised in Kuisebmond. She describes her hometown as a lovely close-knit community. Growing up was difficult for Margareth in the sense that she did not really understand what the school system expected of her. She had trouble fitting into the educational system especially in the primary years of her schooling. This made Margareth appear slow and her fellow students quickly spread word of Margaret being slow and dumb within the community she lived. Margareth attended the Deutche Schule, today known as Flamingo Primary School. “I was not a top performer and everyone in my community knew this. “Adults from the c o m m u n i t y, e s pecially teachers from other primary schools looked down on me and constantly compared me to the “smart children” and told me I need to be like them.” Margareth told the Namib Times in a telephonic interview. Margareth describes these comments from adults in her childhood as discouraging rather than encouraging. Margareth said: “It made me question my existence at a young age to curve the negativity. I taught myself how to fight back by being vocal. I was known as the chatterbox of the community. I taught myself how to be confident and I always knew my life is in my mind and in my speech.” Margareth knew that if she was going to make it in life, it will be on her own
terms and time. When it was time for Margareth to go to high school, the chosen school initially did not accept her, but after her mom drafted a letter to the Ministry of Education, the school ended up accepting her. “My mom believed Walvis Bay High School, now Walvis Bay Private High School was the only school that could change the trajectory of my life.” Margareth said and went on to say that her mother was right because she made it to the top 10 from Grade 10 and never fell out of the list until she completed her grade 12 year. After high school, Margareth completed her undergraduate degree in accounting at the University of Namibia and in April 2019 she graduated with her first Master's Degree (MBA: Finance) and only Namibian who achieved cum laude with her second Masters Degree (MPhil Development Finance) from the University of Stellenbosch on 12 December 2019. The reason I have two distinctively different master's is because the University of Namibia exposed me to more listed investment types of modules and the University of Stellenbosch exposed me to unlisted and development finance types of investments. I have structured my path to build bridges between Capital Markets and environmental, social and Governance ideas. I believe we should work towards promoting an integrated financial regulation, which is basically a capital markets regulation that integrates sustainable development factors in the mandates of the supervision agencies
of stewardship codes, listing rules and financial stability. I believe I am in a great space mentally and emotionally to realise what I have set out top do in the Namibian finance and investment management space.” Margareth said. She believes if she could turn her life around from where people spoke down on her and thought of her as dumb in her early life but achieved great success so far. For Margareth everything is possible, and she cannot wait to start prac-
tising. She believes she will make a great succuss and concluded by saying: “Everything really
boils down to confidence, believing in yourself and doing what is needed to get there.”

Testimony: Mr Daudi made my enemies confess to what they had done to me. Esther (Swakop) first heard of Mr Daudi on a community radio talk show: I took his number down and booked an appointment. He charged N$ 200.00 to read my fortune. I was shocked when he mentioned that my husband was involved with another woman which I could not believe and he showed me all the bad spell she had done to me in the mirror and I was shocked. I have lived for 20 years with unhappiness in my marriage until now, Mr Daudi cast a spell and the other woman separated from my husband and she later confessed to me. Today we live a happy life with respect and no fighting after Mr Daudi binded him to me. I recommend him to others who are suffering and I regard him as my guide. My husband has been to him and his business has been improved. We both agreed to go public so that the people get to know Mr Daudi this is the only way I can pay him back, I think he has been sent by God. Appointment number: 081 552 3053

Refresher Sports Coaching Courses Rudi Bowe In Walvis Bay we have children who play football & other sports with passion & enthusiasm.
What is lacking at the harbour town is the opportunity to be supported by coaches who could help the children develop to fulfil their full potential. Therefore, Playtime will be running free to access Refresher Sports Coaching Courses on Saturday 18 January at the Hub in Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay. Playtime Namibia is NOT looking for the next “golden nugget.” They are looking to maximise the opportunity for many young children to be coached in football and in other sports codes and more importantly in life skills. Working with other likeminded people you would raise the ability, confidence and prospects of children from your own community while getting tremendous satisfaction from your input and you could make a difference in the Walvis Bay community. Playtime has a structure for developing general “Games Coaches” from grassroots level - those still at school or college to, Assistant/Junior, Internship Coaches to Senior Coaches. In order to improve the overall standard of performance of our Walvis Bay children in sports there must be mass participation on their behalf to drive the initial interest and provide competition at the various levels to raise the bar for those children and young people who want to take part beyond the recreational stage. Playtime's senior coaches and coach educators have a specific in-depth knowledge of a sport like Football,
Cricket, Rugby, Athletics and MultiSports, or are up skilled in fields such as health and nutrition, First Aid or Early Childhood Development for example. Without this key component it's difficult and impossible to raise standards much above the pack and with a coach it means more children get the best start and lessons learnt are for life. Sporting Director of Playtime Namibia Mr. Mick Sheehan said that Playtime strives to provide this across ALL areas of Walvis Bay, BUT there is a limit in the number of trained and qualified coaches and that Playtime is aware of many people, teachers and other volunteers who give up their time to help support local school and club teams who they want to help. Sheehan said “Young coaches are the future if standards are to measurably improve over the coming decade. But right now, we need enthusiastic people who are happy to try their hand at coaching at a relatively “low” level to encourage others to show an interest” Sheehan said. Sheehan added that Playtime is about mass participation for the children but without coaches from all codes the process of improving techniques are limited. “Playtime is a facilitator for improving Life Skills - sport is our chosen medium and that's why Playtime will never be an academy in way the most people would interpret its current meaning here” Sheehan added. To register for the Refresher Sports Coaching Courses go to the Coaches Corner on the facebook page of Playtime Namibia.
Alvanley in the United Kingdom has signed current Namibia Under-19 captain, Matthew de Gouveia for their upcoming Cheshire County League campaign. The talented batting all-rounder from Walvis Bay has represented Namibia Under19s at the World Cup Qualifiers (March 2019) and the recent CSA Franchise Cubs Week (Jan 2020) is set to play in England for the upcoming summer having recently signed with Cheshire County League side Alvanley. De Gouveia the son of former Brave Wa r r i o r s s t a r S a n d r o d e Gouveia, was in blistering form in the qualifiers racking up 199 runs at
an average of 99.5, including an explosive 102 not out off 107 balls against Sierra Leone and 50 not out against Uganda. Roll on a few months and he was named Namibia's Under-19 skipper for their CSA Cubs Week where he made it in top 10 Leading Batting Av e r a g e s . H e continued to excel, finishing as the 7th leading run-scorer with 247 runs at 61.8 in his 5 innings. T h e y o u n g s t e r, who benefits from a Portuguese Passport courtesy of his father Sandro de Gouveia, has proven his ability across all forms of cricket. He has clearly starred at youth level but has also done likewise in the Namibian Premier League for local powerhouses
Welwitchia Cricket Club. De Gouveia is not only a fine batsman but a very useful leg-spinner, too and an excellent soccer player. He is by no means the finished article, but has clearly shown immense promise and aspires to play professional cricket. The explosive batsman, who also bowls very useful leg-spin, is eager to impress whilst abroad and hopefully pick up a few County 2nd XI games in 2020.

Walvis Bay Golf Club - The Committee vs. Members The 2020 golfing program kicked off last Saturday at the Walvis Bay Golf Club with the playing of the Committee vs. Members Cup for the third year.
The Individual winners: Johnny Truter and Carlos de Gouveia The greens were in excellent shape thanks to our hard working greens Committee volunteers. With honours being tied 1 each after close contests in 2018 and 2019, a good field of 42 players entered. The Committee was handicapped with two stalwarts in Tienie and Wilma still on holiday and had to co-opt Hannes and Jason from the greens committee. Alas, this move almost backfired as both of them struggled - it looked like they were actually on the Members' side! Hannes managed to score two dubious and hotly debated 'wins' over Gunther and Quinton whose golf cart decided after 4 holes that the day was going to be too long, forcing them into posting early no-returns. Talk is that Hannes sabotaged the cart? At the end of the day, the Committee just managed to squeeze a win by 16,5 points to 15,5 and a tearful Boel immediately resigned as Members' captain. There will be lots of talk about this year's event and it all sets up for what will be a strong comeback by the Members next year. Thanks to a generous, last minute sponsorship by Luanda Logistics a couple of handy Individual Stableford prizes were also at stake. Winner of the day, after a long
absence from the Winner's Circle pursues his other talent – pigeon racing, was Johnny Truter on a count-out on 42 points. Koot Potgieter lost the count-out and claimed second prize with Pieter Fox coming third on 40 points. Kevin de Reuck, Jaans Stander and Andre Burger shared the rest of the spoils on 38 points. Lucky Draws were won by Jaans Stander and the usual, lucky, Emile Vilbert Junior. This coming Saturday, Luanda Logistics will be back sponsoring the Walvis Bay Pairs competition. The format is Medal: 9 holes Foursomes, 9 holes Betterball and 9 holes combined. There will be many 'sorry partner' shots and it is good preparation for the Kit Group Namibian Pairs in Windhoek in mid-February. Tee-offs will be slightly earlier than usual to fit the 27 holes in. There will be one gross team prize and a number of net prizes, so get those names on the board. On 25 & 26 January
Iris Boutique will again sponsor the Nagu, Walvis Bay Open over 36 holes and the Entry List is also on the Board. Welcome to Grant Mather who has taken over the Pro-Shop and the Driving Range. We wish them all the best and call on members to support them in the service they render to golf in Walvis Bay. They have offered specials for Hannes, Jason and Kurt this week at the driving range. The Joker is still roaming freely after last Friday when Nardo's representative, Johnny G, failed to convert a N$10 ticket into N$59,000! and the pool will certainly rise to around N$65,000 this coming Friday. Entries are open for all and only N$10 gives you a shot at the grand prize! Only 24 cards remaining in the pack and that elusive joker is one of them. The Committee again wishes everyone a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2020 with lots of good golf being part of it!
