Schneider-Waterberg free on bail - again Emily Schneider-Waterberg, the well-known former estate agent of Swakopmund who saw her bail cancelled as a result of an outstanding warrant of arrest for failing to attend court appearances on charges of assault and malicious damage to property, has been freed on bail once more. After her bail was revoked the week before last week, Schneider-Waterberg again applied for bail last week. After her legal representative undertook to take responsibility for her to attend future hearings and the criminal trial, she was again released on bail. Soon after her release on Friday Schneider-Waterberg wasted little time in criticising certain aspects upon which namib times reported on the issue. Among others Schneider-Waterberg explained she is not an estate agent anymore and now resides in Windhoek, and not Swakopmund anymore. Schneider-Waterberg in her writing also described the magistrate court's earlier decision to have her bail revoked, after she missed several court appearances since June 2014, as an “injustice” and added: “the court's injustice is being dealt with currently”. A copy of Schneider-Waterberg's letter has been forwarded to the magistrate's court for comment.

Paulus Iiambo wins Rössing Marathon Staff at the Gobabeb Research Station confirmed yesterday the Kuiseb River is flowing and reached the station at midnight on Sunday. Yesterday the river was still flowing, with research staff measuring water levels every hour. It is expected the Kuiseb will be reaching Homeb and ultimately Rooibank soon. Whether the level of flow will reach the height of earlier rainy seasons remain to be seen, as it depends on follow-up rains in the catchment area.

MANWU hands Husab over to MUN Erwin Leuschner With the construction of the huge Husab uranium mine completed, the Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (MANWU) yesterday officially “handed-over the mine” to the Mine Workers Union of Namibia (MUN) to in future deal with all industrial relations on the site. The construction of the Husab Uranium Mine was everything but smooth sailing. “Most of the time the public didn't know what happened behind the scene. But it wasn't easy to keep 4 500 contractor employees happy,” said Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua yesterday in Swakopmund. According to the Governor, “most of the bigger industrial relation things were very contained”, even from the media. Mutjavikua said that it was important to him, to immediately and timeously address any employment issues, as they not only reflected on his performance, but it was especially crucial to protect this huge direct foreign investment in Namibia. “Husab started out at a time when mass unemployment was a problem. Areva put their mine on care and maintenance and Rössing was downsizing. Our only hope was to maintain and keep this baby (Husab) very safe,” Mutjavikua said. During the peak of the construction close to 6 000 people were operating on the

mine site. As the construction concluded there are currently about 400 contractors left, while Swakop Uranium is employing about 1 500 people, Swakop Uranium CEO Zheng Keping revealed yesterday. Most of the contractors were in the meantime demobilized. According to Keping the first batch of Uranium Oxide, also known as Yellow Cake, was produced at the end of 2016 (namib times reported). “We are now busy with the ramp-up operation. According to the design it will take 20 months to reach nameplate operation (starting from December 2016), but we hope to achieve this date quicker,” Keping said. “When we commenced with the construction of the Husab Mine in 2013, we as the company recognized that Industrial Relations would be a major challenge and risk area, given the fact that more than 4 500 contractor employees from different companies would be working on the Husab Project to construct the mine,” Keping said. It was for this reason that Swakop Uranium and MANWU entered into two agreements in 2014. “Swakop Uranium committed themselves to the agreements and some challenges were solved. We call on all big capital projects to be treated the same,” said MANWU President Angula Angula yesterday.

Continued from Page 1 allegedly against a fee, to manipulate their prepaid electricity meters at home not to register electricity usage against the units programmed onto the devices. In this way suspects gained financially from using electricity for free. More than one hundred electricity users in Walvis Bay currently enjoy free electricity as a result of manipulated prepaid meters, namib times was told. Erongo RED is expected to issue a press statement in this regard by today. The regional electricity distributor regards the issue as very serious, as this amounts to electricity revenue losses that potentially run into the millions. Other towns in Erongo are also suspected of harbouring these pirate electricity consumers. Through a preliminary investigation and consulting sources close to the criminal investigation, it was learnt that all the suspects had their prepaid meters at their homes manipulated by this electrician. They are all residents of Walvis Bay's lagoon neighbourhood and some occupy senior positions at their respective employers. All the suspects were fined by Erongo RED for abusing the electricity distributor's prepaid meters. They were eager to settle the fines and reimburse Erongo RED for the revenue losses. Despite that, it seems at this stage they would be held criminally liable along with the electrical contractor.

MET: Desert Lion XPL-98 died of anthrax Erwin Leuschner

The male desert lion known as XPL-98, whose carcass was found earlier in January 2017 in the Ugab River area, died as a result of Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis). The Ministry of Environment and Tourism made this statement yesterday after the discovery of the carcass initially caused a public outcry, mainly on the social media platform facebook. “Most of the comments and reactions were misinformed and questioned the commitment of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and those involved with the research and monitoring of desert adapted lion in the Kunene and Erongo regions. Many have condemned the Ministry (…),” the statement reads. In this regard, an autopsy done by Dr. Philip Stander found what appeared to have been extensive bleeding inside the chest cavity of the carcass. The lungs and heart were too decomposed to confirm the cause of the bleeding though. Initially it was thought that the injury could have been caused by a sharp object penetrating the chest between the lion's ribs, or possibly by a small caliber rifle. As a result, the cause of death of the lion due to human-lion conflict was suspected. However, to rule out the possible cause of death as result of a disease, soil samples were collected for evaluation of diseases and tests were conducted at the Central Veterinary Laboratory of the Ministry

of Agriculture, Water and Forestry. “The samples tested positive for Anthrax (Bacillus anthracis). Blood and tissue samples collected from the lion carcass were also submitted to Central Veterinary Laboratory for further analysis and also tested positive,” the statement reads. The Ministry assures that measures were taken to ensure no further spread of anthrax from the carcass to other areas or other animals. The carcass was burned and buried as per the advice of the veterinarian immediately after samples were collected. “The Ministry also wishes to appeal to the public, particularly those referring to themselves as environmental activists to refrain from interfering with the processes and activities of the Ministry. We advise and encourage Namibians who genuinely care about wildlife conservation to communicate directly with us using appropriate channels instead of sensationalizing issues such as the death of the Ugab male lion XPL-98 on social media,” the statement continues.

Namport puts focus on permanent workforce amid casual workers labour complaint Piquet Jacobs

Workers employed casually by Namport deployed in repacking fish at the Port of Walvis Bay, has lodged a labour complaint following Namports decision to discontinue the service, leaving casual workers unemployed. Namport has decided, regardless to the complaint, to put in all efforts to preserve the jobs of current permanent employees. Most of the casual workers have been deployed in repacking fish at the Port of Walvis Bay, which was over the years handled by Namport on behalf of the owners of the fish. This service has since been deemed as not cost effect therefore, with effect from 1 February 2017, Namport discontinued the re-packing of fish and as a result no longer requires the services of the casual workers who were previously deployed to the operation on a “as and when needed basis”. “The casual workers have subsequently been notified that Namport would not be calling on their services going forward. Unfortunately, the workers insist on their services being retained by Namport, despite the absence of work to which they can be deployed. It must be reiterated that the said casual workers were never at any point under formal employment contracts with Namport but were used on an ad hoc basis dependent upon fish volumes which required repacking,” Namport CEO, Bisey Uirab, is quoted in his statement. In the meantime, the casual workers have lodged a complaint against Namport with the Labour Commissioner's Office. Namport confirmed on Friday that they would rather put all efforts into the preservation of their current 964 permanent workforce. Namport Headquarters

MFMR clamps down illegal fishing Erwin Leuschner

Inspectors at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) have been very busy these past few months: During January a total of 128 fines relating to illegal fishing and/or illegal harvesting of marine animals with a value of N$52 260 were issued. These figures were now revealed by Control Fisheries Inspector Stanley Ndara. The most fines were issued to persons for being in possession of undersize white mussels. According to Ndara during the month of January a total of 553 undersize white mussels were found, amounting to fines to the total value of N$11 060 being issued for this offence. Six more fines (value N$8 100) were issued during the course of the month to people being in possession of undersize rock lobsters. Even though a recreational fishing permit only costs N$14, and is valid for the entire month, a total of 27 fines were issued to persons not being in possession of such a permit. These fines amounted to N$8 100. 27 more fines were issued for being in possession of prohibited species, namely Annelid worms. These fines amounted to N$8 100. Five fines were issued to anglers (one fine each) for fishing in a prohibited area without authorization and retained nine Kob (protected species in that area). These anglers were fined N$1500 each. During the month in question the fines paid as an Admission of Guilt (AoG) amounted to N$8 660. Two of the fines, valued at N$300 each, were withdrawn by courts for various technicalities. During the last quarter of 2016, which includes the months of October, November and December, a total of 256 fines/summonses were issued. The total value of these amounts to N$84 380. The highest amount of fines (90) were issued for being in possession of prohibited Annelid worms. These amounted to N$27 000. During these three months a total of 65 fines were issued to anglers, who were fishing without a recreational fishing permit. These amounted to N$19 500. 61 fines were issued for harvesting 159 undersize fish, amounting to N$15 600. 24 fines, valued at N$10 880, were issued for harvesting 544 undersize white mussels. During the last quarter of 2016 inspectors also arrested three persons and charged them for fishing mullets (harders) illegally without owning a right or a license. Two of the accused are out on bail of N$2 000 each, while a third suspect is out on warning. Furthermore one person was arrested and charged for being in possession of 17 rock lobsters in excess, as well as 14 undersize rock lobsters and one rock lobster in berry. The suspect was also diving without a recreational fishing permit of which the total value of the offence is N$9 600.

Coastal residents flock to Kuiseb River as news of strong flow breaks Residents of the coast flocked to various spots along the Kuiseb River over the weekend, as news broke on Friday of the river in flood after good rains in the catchment areas, specifically the Khomas Hochland. The Gaub-bridge where the C14 crosses the Kuiseb River was a popular spot over the weekend as residents went to see the spectacular scene of the first water flow in years. Some people were too optimistic though and went to see the Kuiseb in the vicinity of Rooibank. However, with the Kuiseb already steadily making its way towards Homeb, people might just become lucky and encounter a river in flood at Rooibank by the weekend. In the meantime, good rains have also been received over the weekend in the catchment areas of the Swakop River, with the river flowing. However, whether it can reach the ocean remains dependent on the good fortunes of the rain. Omaruru was also a popular spot lately as people took the time to drive from the coast to see the Omaruru flowing as well as Uis where good rains have been received in recent days. It makes everyone hopeful the town’s water woes can be of the past as underground water aquifer recharges.

End is here for Ryazanovka

The Russian trawler Ryazanovka is seen alongside at the Walvis Bay Syncro lift where operations are soon to start to scrap the vessel. The vessel shot to instant unpopularity late last year when it could be confirmed it was in fact in Namibia to capture live dolphins, killer whales, seals and penguins for the Asian aquarium trade. A Chinese businessman was behind the scheme and lodged an application to the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in this regard. The Chinese businessman later threw in the towel against public criticism. Ryazanovka could not leave Namibia at the time as the vessel was unseaworthy and needed repairs and maintenance to be able to be surveyed seaworthy. In the rust-bucket condition the vessel was, it was decided more cost effective to scrap it. Tue 14 February 2017 High Tide: 05:36 Low Tide: 11:33 High Tide: 17:49 Low Tide: 23:39

understanding. Furthermore, they provide security to your saved funds. As savings needs progress, products such as endowment policies, education policies, unit trusts and retirement annuities are also considered. However, whether you are saving or investing, it is vital that you understand that different products should be used for different objectives and in order to achieve this you need to understand the nature of the products available. Some products give good returns and others do not, and this is normally directly proportionate to the level of risk they carry. You have probably heard the expert's discuss the term "risk and return" but what does it actually mean? Low risk in a nutshell means that the value of your investment should never fall below the original amount invested. So, for example, if you save your money in a bank account you will not lose it (unless the bank defaults). However, there is a trade-off if the amount of interest you earn does not keep up with inflation, as the value of your money will then diminish over time. High risk means that you could lose the capital you have invested but there is an opportunity of superior returns. For example, investing in shares can be risky if the company gets into trouble. The value of its shares could fall below the amount that you paid for them. On the upside the company could do really well and you could get returns well in excess of inflation. Taking all your hard-earned cash and investing it randomly is no different to a day at the races. Both gambling and investing carry an element of risk but when we invest we have tools that help us hedge our bets. Now that we have explained a bit about saving and investing, here are some tips on how to get started on your savings if you have not already done so. · Get the budgeting basics right. Before you can start saving, you need to know what your total income and total expenses are as couple. A basic budget will give you a bird's eye view of your financial situation. Once you know what your monthly obligations are, you will know how much you can afford to put aside. · What are you saving towards? Newlywed couples can be forgiven for thinking they can suddenly take over the world together. They will want to go on exotic holidays, buy expensive furniture, and spend on the latest make of car, often making unnecessary debt in the process. But then they'll realise that accumulating assets takes time. So they will need to prioritise. It's good and well to want to go on holiday every year, but you need to decide which is more important - an annual holiday or a fully furnished house? Luckily, couples nowadays tend to live together before getting married so you might be lucky enough to already have a fully furnished home if you are one of those couples. · Think about the future. When saving, you need to know whether the money will be used for that holiday or whether you are thinking longer term. For example, if you plan to have children, you will need to save towards their upkeep and their education. These are just a few tips to get you started. The best thing you can do is to speak to a financial planner. They will give you all the advice you need to ensure you have a healthy, financially secure relationship together. But don't forget one of the most basic things – co-operation. As a couple, you will need to work together to secure your future. Saving is difficult when you have to do it alone, and often even more difficult as a couple. But hey, you decided you can live together for the rest of your lives, so surely you already have the foundation to become a formidable team as you invest in your future. So here's to a life of prosperity. The power of saving as a couple Media Release

Do you and your partner have big plans coming up, whether it's a holiday, a wedding, new house or even planning for a baby? Finding ways to save up money for these big milestones together can be a daunting task, if not planned properly. However with Valentine's coming up tomorrow you can do something about it as partners. Instead of buying your loved one that special Valentine's gift or going out on a romantic date, why not consider the option of saving funds together as a couple for a brighter future together. After all there is power in saving as a couple. Spending is easy to do together, but saving as a couple can prove to be a challenge, but a worthwhile experience if planned well. Saving should be a couple's top priority, and with your savings will

come the ability to invest for your future as a family. For many people, saving and investing is one and the same thing and the terminology is often used inter-changeably. The experts, however, will tell you that saving and investing can be considered to be two entirely different disciplines but have equal importance in terms of crafting a financial plan and securing your future financial freedom. Saving is seen as a secure way of accumulating money by making regular contributions into a savings product. Investing on the other hand, is more about protecting and growing a pot of accumulated money. However, it can carry an element of risk depending on where you choose to invest this pot of money. For entry level savings, banking accounts are normally the product of choice given their accessibility, convenience and ease of use and-

Who is Cupid? The mention of Cupid typically conjures up images of a cherubic winged infant wielding a bow and arrow, but this wasn't always the case. Long before the Romans adopted and renamed him, Cupid was known to the Greeks as Eros, the god of love. One of the first authors to mention Eros (circa 700 B.C.) was Hesiod, who described him in “Theogony” as one of the primeval cosmogonic deities born of the world egg. But later accounts of the lineage of Eros vary, describing him as the son of Nyx and Erebus; or Aphrodite and Ares; or Iris and Zephyrus; or even Aphrodite and Zeus—who would have been both his father and grandfather. Armed with a bow and a quiver filled with both golden arrows to arouse desire and leaden arrows to ignite aversion, Eros struck at the hearts of gods and mortals and played with their emotions. In one story from ancient Greek

mythology, which was later retold by Roman authors, Cupid (Eros) shot a golden arrow at Apollo, who fell madly in love with the nymph Daphne, but then launched a leaden arrow at Daphne so she would be repulsed by him. In another allegory, Cupid's mother, Venus (Aphrodite), became so jealous of the beautiful mortal Psyche that she told her son to induce Psyche to fall in love with a monster. Instead, Cupid became so enamored with Psyche that he married her—with the condition that she could never see his face. Eventually, Psyche's curiosity got the better of her and she stole a glance, causing Cupid

to flee in anger. After roaming the known world in search of her lover, Psyche was eventually reunited with Cupid and granted the gift of immortality. In the poetry of the Archaic period, Eros was represented as a handsome immortal who was irresistible to both man and gods. But by the Hellenistic period, he was increasingly portrayed as a playful, mischievous child. It is this chubby love-inducing putto that has persisted over time and has become our ubiquitous Valentine's Day mascot.

ball ideas and bringing community members together. Lourence Louw opened the scoring figures for Orlando Pirates, ending half time with 1 goal, while Sandowns left with zero. The game proceded

more immensely during the second half, when Sandowns stepped onto the field after conceding a goal to Orlando Pirates. Armando Bradley intercepted the pass, lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper and netted the ball into the

goalpost, scoring the first goal in favour of Sandowns. That amazing strike by Terence Cook secured Pirates with the second goal. Just as Pirates thought they had the match under wraps, Aluise Seibeb rescued Sandowns with a second goal seconds before the final whistle, ending the match with 2-2 .

“From my side I'd say it was a great game indeed, the only hiccup was when my team lost focus during the last minutes, awarding their opponents with inconsiderate goals, but hopefully this will remain a lesson to them”, said Simao Simataa, one of the coaches from Pirates.

Skydiving takes a bigger step Ground Rush adventures takes on its annual national skydiving championship on Saturday, 4th of February above the beautiful Skeleton Coast. Sport skydivers from all corners of Namibia and all over the world attempted this year's challenge. Each team had two participants, primarily one senior and one junior skydiver. This ensured that all teams had an equal chance of victory (similar to a handicap system in golf). They had to complete the predetermined formations while plummeting to earth at over 200km/h. The championship has met a substantial increase in participation since its introduction in 2015 (of 3 teams) which accelerated up to 10 by 2017. “Skydiving is one of the few sports where men and women compete against one another on an equal footing, whereas on an international platform it remains a male dominated sport”, said Francois Krös, Championship Director Ground Rush adventures invest in empowering the development of female participation in skydiving with the purchase of equipment that are specifically targeted for women along with modern instruction methods. This was evident in the turnout at this year's competition where 4 to 10 teams consisted of female members. Championships were based on the team that could complete the most formations in 30

seconds over the course of two rounds in which the Skybosses team (Jean Basson and Mias Coetzee) took the first place championship. While Chop n Dop consisting of Dawie Oliver and Dries Van Zyl had to settle for second position. A third place position was awarded to the Skysurfers (Anne Bonfert and Jannie van der Westhuizen ). There was also a “bonus accuracy” round where participants aim to land their parachutes on or as close as possible to a pre determined point. Anne Bonfert was crowned Junior Accuracy, while Gregoire Cavalli was awarded with the Senior Accuracy, which was deter-mined by the third jumper who films the sequences and a judge who scrutinised this footage awarding them points.

4 Desert Sahara Race comes back to Namibia After hosting a successful race in 2016, Namibia was opted as host for the 2017 4 Desert Sahara Race which will take place again in the stunning desert terrain of the Skeleton Coast National Park on Saturday, 29April to 6 March. The 4 Desert takes competitors on a journey through the driest, hottest, coldest and windiest places on earth, testing their limits both physically and mentally. Competitors complete the events as part of a new family -- individuals and teams from distant corners of the earth from different backgrounds, religions and cultures bonded together by a common mindset and a shared experience like no other. The 4 Desert Series is a world class sporting event open to anyone who is ready for the journey of a lifetime. 120 to 150 competitors are expected to take part in the 2017 race in Namibia. Another 40- 70 support staff, volunteers, local staff and media are also an integral part of this race. This is a 250 kilometre rough country endurance footrace that spans over seven days and competitors are challenged to go beyond the limits of their physical and mental endurance. Racing self supported in the most inhospitable climates and climates and formidable landscapes, they must carry all their own equipment and food, and are only provided with drinking water and a place in a tent each night to rest. Namibia benefits from this greatly as a country, what better marketing can we get than all these people taking home these unbelievable and magnificent experiences and spreading the word about our incredible country to families, friends, colleagues and fellow runners. As the race is being held in a National Park, it brings money to the park,

that benefits local communities and the Park itself. All measures are taken that the environment is protected and awareness is created well upfront with competitors, staff and media about the sensitive eco system the race is being held in. Rubbish management is set in place as well as strict measures to ensure not too many tracks are left behind. The 4 Desert Race Series is widely recognized as the most prestigious outdoor footrace series in the world. The series consists of the Sahara Race (Namibia), Gobi March (China), Atacama Crossing (Chile) and The Last Desert (Antarctica). Competitors in the races traverse 250 kilometers in seven days over rough country terrain with only a place in a tent and water provided. They are supported by highly qualified staff, all with experience in hiking, marathons and ultramarathons, and medical teams specializing in wilderness medicine. The 4 Desert Race Series was founded in Hong Kong in February 2002 by American Mary Gadams. A former investment banker and strategist by day, Gadams was a well-known figure in adventure and endurance sport with finishes in numerous marathons, ultramarathons and wilderness competitions around the world. The first 4 Desert event, Gobi March, was held in September 2003 near Dunhuang, China. This inaugural event introduced trail running races to the expansive Asian country.

Rossmund welcomes Destination Swakopmund Destination Swakopmund is now the brand new sponsor to the Rossmund Golf Club by offering their unconditional support for upcoming months. Weather conditions was perfect for a golf day bringing out a fairly good field of players out onto the course. Format for the day was an Individual Stableford, so players had no worries about their partner or how to play, they just needed to go out there and and

enjoy themselves. Scores were good with lots of count outs needed to obtain the eventual prize winners. Sponsor Representive; Gerhard van der Merwe, provided players with some insight unto “Destination Swakopmund” and explaining where they fit into the local tourism industry.

The main objective for the course was to get Swakopmund international recognition through their bronchure; “All in one Package” and their information Kiosk situated in the heart of the town. The initiative behind the idea was to promote Swakopmund as the destination of choice. He thanked every-

one for giving him the opportunity and looks forward to seeing them all for a Betterball Stableford competition next week. There was only one 2 club from overall winner Clive Lawrence – those lucky enough to go home with one of the fantastic prizes were: st 1 : C Lawrence

36pts (c/o); 2nd: M Jacobs 36pts (c/o); rd 3 : S Johns 36pts (c/o); 4th: A Strauss 35pts (c/o); 5th: S Massipa 35pts (c/o); 6th: D Benson 34pts (c/o). RGC committee representative Helmut Ndjendja thanked the sponsor for a great day and their support of golf at Rossmund.

Paulus Iiyambo wins Rössing Marathon A new national marathon champion was crowned today when Paulus Iiyambo of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) sport club won the Rössing Marathon National Championship in a good time of 2 hours 19 minutes and 30 seconds. Sponsored by Rio Tinto Rössing Uranium and hosted by Swakop Striders Athletics Club the event took place in overcast, windless conditions at a new venue the Vineta North sports fields in Swakopmund. After his win, a confident Iiyambo said; “I've been participating here for a number of years so by now I'm almost used to the Rössing Marathon. My race was relaxed and the conditions were great.” The defending champion, Reonard Namupala, came in hot on the heels of the winner and managed a respectable second place in a time of 2 hours 22 minutes and 31 seconds. Simon Shipingana finished third in 2 hours 23 minutes and 17 seconds. In the Marathon Ladies Open category it was Namibia's 2012 Olympic star and NDF competitor, Helalia Johannes, who burst back onto the victory scene with an impressive win over many younger competitors. Helalia won in 2 hours 45 minutes and 20

seconds and still looked full of running after her victory. She said: “It feels great to perform well in the marathon again after focusing on the shorter distances during last year's event. I am happy with my recorded time and still had energy left after the race. Thank you Rössing for another great event this year.” Sofia Nambabi finished second in the Ladies Open Marathon with a time of 3 hours 6 minutes and 48 seconds and Julia Jansen van Rensburg third in 3 hours 17 minutes and 24 seconds. The fast-paced 10 km Run was won by Kefas Kondjashii in a time of 30 minutes and 16 seconds, slightly slower than last year's winning time of just under 30 minutes. Kefas was followed by Tomas Rainhold in 30:18 and Jeremia Shaliaxhwe, last year's winner from the Namibia Police (Nampol), with a time of 30:35. In the 10 km Run Ladies Open it was Nampol's super fit Lavinia Haitope who triumphed in 33:40, followed by Alina Armas (35:36) and Leena

Ekandjo in a time of 37:46. The winners of the open categories received prizes worth over N$70 000, which included N$10 000 cash each and an additional N$20 000 development bonus for the men's and ladies' marathon winners. The development bonus is to help the winners further their careers throughout the year of their reign as Rössing Marathon National Champions. A record number of 109 marathon athletes entered the Rössing Marathon this year, with close to 300 entries in the 10km Run (also a new record) and around 200 fun walkers took part in the 5 km Fun Walk in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN). The Uranium Charity Relay over ten kilometres, an event also in aid of CAN and open to uranium companies in the Erongo Region, was won for the third year in a row by the team from Rössing Uranium Mine. Through their registration fees and additional donations, the fun walkers and relay runners collected approximately N$4 000 for the Cancer

Association to use in the fight against cancer in Nami-bia. The theme for this year's Rössing Marathon was “Stay healthy. Join the race”. Werner Duvenhage, Rössing Uranium managing director said: “The main aim of the marathon championship is to spark a long-term interest in healthy habits and proudly associate Rössing Uranium with the promotion of healthy lifestyles in the mine's neighbouring communities. At the same time we aim to foster friendships and teamwork among all participants. As part of the Rio Tinto Group, we strive to create positive social impacts through responsible mining. It is with continued investment in the talent and potential of our beautiful country that we support improved living standards for our people, safety, health and wellbeing, and education in our host communities. We congratulate the champions of today and undertake to host the event for the 27th consecutive time in 2018 again.”

The Annual Pupkewitz Schools gala took place this weekend in Namibia Sharlien Tjambari On Saturday, 11 February a total of 75 children from different schools competed against each other at the Pupkewitz Annual School Gala at the Water Cube also known as the Swakopmund Indoor Swimming Pool. The Annual Pupkewitz Schools Gala was organised with the main aim of developing the swimming skills of the children in Namibia. This event is sponsored by Pupkewitz annually and is organised by Swakopmund Swimming Club. According to Dentie Louw of the Swakopmund Swimming Club, three more schools joined this year to make a total of five schools that swam on Saturday at the Water Cube in Swakopmund. He said 75 kids participated in the event and the different strokes that they swam were the 50m Breast-stroke, 50m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle. “The swimmers were from different swimming clubs and

different age groups; and they were just doing social swimming for the love of swimming and for fun” said Louw. The schools that participated in the gala this year were from Windhoek, Oranjemund and Swakopmund. Louw further said the Swakopmund Swimming Club would like to thank Pupkewitz for annually sponsoring the school gala and for making swimming a good sport. “We would also like to thank all the kids that participated, all the teachers that helped as timekeepers, all parents for their support and we hope to see more schools participating in this event in the future” concludes Louw.

High School learners from different schools were very delighted to be part of the annual gala
