Floris Steenkamp

Floris Steenkamp Today, 14 November, is World Diabetes Day. This day is observed every year on this date, as this marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, the man who co-discovered insulin in 1922 alongside Charles Best. The work in this field is also recognised of Dr. Nikolai Paulescu of Romania in the same year. A free wellness program and diabetics tests will be conducted today at the Saint Raphael Health Recovery Clinic in Walvis Bay (across the street from the Dunes Mall where Langer Heinrich Crescent connects to the airport road) be-

tween 09:00 and 12:00 and thereafter at MPACT at 44, 3rd Street East from 15:00 to 17:00. The project is hosted by the Lions Club of Walvis Bay. As part of today's observance of World Diabetes Day, a former Walvis Bay resident, Dr Silvana Nienaber

(Teleman), who lives with diabetes shared her experience of living with this disease. She highlights the importance to learn and understand diabetics and to manage the disease constantly: “As most of you know I have had type 1 Continues on page 2

Two people arrested last Monday after targeting two tourists at a public toilet at the Walvis Bay lagoon were charged last week with robbery, alternatively possession of suspected stolen goods. Stefanus Angula and Tobias Iyambo (ages not indicated) were arrested less than three minutes after they robbed a tourist couple and then sped off in a vehicle. A traffic official spotted the speeding vehicle seconds after he heard of the robbery on the two way radio in his patrol car. He gave chase and after pulling the vehicle off arrested

the driver. The other passengers jumped out of the vehicle and ran away. One could be apprehended. The duo was denied bail and the matter was postponed to 22 November. It brings the total to five, thugs who were arrested and prosecuted for robbery and theft, targeting tourists in Walvis Bay. The five are all serving compulsory prison sentences ranging from six

to ten months. The Walvis Bay magistrates court was also accommodative in all the incidents where the tourists were robbed, by allowing victims to testify immediately to allow them to continue on their holiday journeys through the country, as opposed to be delayed for weeks or even having to return to Namibia at a later stage to testify.

Free diabetes testing today at Walvis Bay Continued from page 1 diabetes for almost 30 years. Before I go into the latest stats of diabetes and what can be done to prevent the complications that come with this disease, I would like to briefly share with you my personal journey with diabetes. So far this road has been very interesting….from not knowing or understanding what was happening to me at a young age (which I'm not going to state as in my mind and in my own delusion I'm still only 21!!!) to the bruises all over my body from having to have blood taken every 2-4 hours with needles that were so blunt that I can still feel them tearing through my skin. I clearly recall injecting at candle light and my mom boiling glass syringes at all hours of the night, as during the Communist Romania, the government decided that we should all be deprived of basic services. Moving to Namibia made managing my diabetes easier having modern facilities and technology. However, I found that no medical specialist understood what I was experiencing and how food and life in general affected my diabetes. It has taken me many hypoglycemia (and for the non-diabetic readers it is the worst experience of in a diabetic's life) and many keto acidotic comas to get me to realise that the best person to look after me and my diabetes is ultimately ME! So, I changed focus and started to learn as much as possible about diabetes and how it affects me and what I can do to try and make diabetes my friend. It still is a work in progress - we have our ups and downs. What I have realised looking back over the last 30 years is that I am so grateful for having diabetes - it got me to where I am today and it has given me a deeper insight into myself. I know that I have so much more to learn and experience on this journey with my diabetes and to be honest it is scary. Complications can set in at any time (when I was diagnosed, I was told that they can occur after 10 years). But it is also exciting. I have challenged my diabetes every step of the way for the last 30 years and I look forward to doing it for the next 30! No one knows for sure what the cause of type 1 diabetes is or how to prevent it! For us, the type 1 diabetics, no one has given us on opportunity to choose between changing our lifestyle and getting diabetes. It just happens!! We know what the predisposing factors for type 2 diabetes are and yet, so many choose not to listen to the advice of their health care practitioners.”

Armistice Day

Floris Steenkamp One hundred red, eco-friendly balloons were released into the air at the war memorial in the J.C. Harries Park at 11:00 on Sunday, to mark approximately 100 years since the end of World War I. The release of the balloons was during the annual Armistice Day Parade th that takes place every year on the Sunday the closest to the 11 of November. This year Armistice Day was on a Sunday. At 11:00 on 11 November 1918 the Allied Forces signed an Armistice with Germany which ended the four year World War I (1914 – 1918). War veterans, mostly former SADF and SWATF soldiers of the Namibian liberation war (1966 – 1989) attended the Parade. It is held every year under the auspices of the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (M.O.T.H.S.) Escarpment Shellhole and forms part of similar parades worldwide. The Namibian Navy's brass band participated in the proceedings and guests included a representative of British war veterans and the delegation of the Brazilian navy also attended. the Deputy Mayor of Walvis Bay Clr Penelope Martin attended the proceedings on behalf of the citizens of Walvis Bay and also laid a wreath. This year’s parade was well attended by members of the public.

9th Street renamed Rudi Bowe

The Council of the Municipality of Walvis Bay has renamed 9th Street in the harbour town to Johnson Fwafwa Mabakeng Street to honour the late Johnson Mabakeng a former Deputy Commissioner in the Namibian Correctional Service who died at the age of 45 in July 2006. The late Deputy Commissioner Johnson Fwafwa Mabakeng was a passionate correctional officer by profession and to some extent by nature. A career associated with a high level of discipline and lived a memorable and successful career. His calling started at a youthful age of 21, when he joined the pre-independence Prison Service on the 1st July 1982 as Assistant Warder. Due to his hard work, vibrant and energetic personality, he rose through the ranks and in 1991 he was promoted to the rank of Captain to be the first Black Head of Prison of the Windhoek Correctional Facility. Due to his strong character and in view of the sensitive assignment related to the transition of Walvis Bay to become part of Namibia, he was identified to be the most suitable officer to oversee the handing and taking over of the Walvis Bay Facility. He perfectly executed the process in a short period of time and was thus promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent. This assignment was aimed at reintegrating the Facility to con-

form to the standards of the new Government. His efforts were recognised and he was promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent on the 1st September 1994. The Late Mabakeng was appointed to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of the Namibian Correctional Service in March 1996, the rank he held until his untimely demise at the age of 45 on 30 July 2006. The CommissionerGeneral of the Namibian Correctional Service R a p h a e l Tu h a f e n i Hamunyela said at the renaming event “As a disciplinarian, coupled with his straight forwardness, the late Mabakeng did not tolerate illdiscipline regardless of his relationship with an individual. He was unifier who encouraged teamwork and respect among officers”. Hamunyela also mentioned that the late Mabakeng was instrumental in fighting for the recognition of the Namibian Correctional Service to be at par with other law enforcement agencies such as the Namibian Defence Force, Namibian Police Force. “The late Mabakeng was a true son of the soil who served this country at the best of his ability through the Namibian Correctional Service and this is evidenced

with the recognition bestowed upon him by the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay. He laid the foundations on which the Namibian Correctional Service is built on and his legacy will continue to inspire us” Hamunyela added. Councillor Penelope Martin the Deputy Mayor of Walvis Bay said on behalf of his Worship Councillor Alderman Immanuel Wilfred the Mayor of Walvis Bay that “A name plays an important part of one's life and we do

not depend on our names to form the basis of our personality. Councillor Martin also mentioned that a street naming ceremony takes place for various reasons including to reflect a changing time or to honour individuals who have made a significant contribution to the country. She added that the late Mabakeng was a hero to many and what sets him apart was his impeccable and excellent work ethic. The eldest son of the late

Mabakeng Mr Mukela Mabakeng said on behalf of the Mabakeng family that “We would liketo express my profound gratitude and appreciation to the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay and its residents for this gesture and call on other towns to emulate this. This street will educate our children to emulate the good leadership and character of our father Johnson Fwafwa Mabakeng which is required by our future generation to carry this nation to greater heights.

Rotary Club takes the Lead The Swakopmund Football Club was the venue for the Rotary Fun Day. The event offered a variety of stalls selling food and other items. A creche, treasure hunt and obstacle course added to the fun with great activities for both young and old. Opening the event, was the Mondesa Youth Opportunities (MYO) marimba group that aired a variety of upbeat medleys. Companies such as Steckels Toyota, VW Autohaus and Nissan displayed the latest on the car market treating visitors to the event with special models and promotions. The inside parking was arrayed with Harley-Davidson motorbikes, with many of the riders winning prizes in different categories. On the periphery, Camel rides took enthusiasts in turns around the field, although the much-anticipated hot air balloon was a no show. A walk through the tent displayed a Fashion show and Pole dancing that wowed the audience. A sterling effort by Swakopmund's Rotarians certainly proved worthwhile as they endeavour to continue the work they do so evidently in our community. Totals of amounts raised were not available at time of going to press, however the Rotary Club is grateful to all who made this event a success.

Discarded bottles get second lease on life Lucas Sioka sells glasses made from recycled bottles in Swakopmund central business district, opposite Woerman Brock supermarket. Sioka explains he used to make and sell his products in Windhoek, but about a year ago he started receiving calls from clients at the coastal towns. He decided to move to Swakopmund. “The market here is good. I have a huge potential for clients in Swakopmund. The most important thing is: people don't buy my products because they love them, most of them say they will support me because I use recycled materials. This helps in keeping the town clean”. According to Sioka, the only challenge he faced on a daily basis is the fact that the municipal officials chase him away from spots he wants to conduct business from. This is difficult because he ended up losing clients who sometimes promise to come back the next day. “I have now obtained a document from the Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and SME Development in order to register my business. I hope to participate in upcoming expositions, Christmas markets and many more events coming up over the festive season”.
