This shocking incident of child abuse occurred at Henties Bay on 6 August and the woman, identified as Lydia Raquel Naobes, made a first appearance in the Swakopmund magistrate's court yesterday over the Continues on page 2
Cape Cross stone Back on home soil The 15th century Cape Cross is back on Namibian soil after an absence of very close to 125 years. The Cross, planted at Cape Cross by the Portuguese explorer Diego Cao in 1486, was removed by the German colonial Government on orders of the German Emperor, William II, on 25 January 1895 and sent to the German Museum of Technology and later to the German Historical Museum in Berlin (as pictured above). South Africa's Representative and advisor to the Portuguese government, Manuel Coelho, on Friday confirmed telephonically from Pretoria the arrival of the Cross on Namibian soil. “The Cape Cross Stone has arrived safely in Namibia from Germany. The Namibian Government will release a press statement in due course”, said Coelho. The German Historical Museum in Berlin, Germany returned the Stone Cross of Cape Cross, a key cultural artefact, to Namibia. The cross was placed on Namibia's coast by Portuguese explorers and is a symbol of Namibia's colonial past. William II, emperor of Germany, had a replica built and on 23 January 1895 positioned it 15 meters from the place where the original cross was located before the original cross was shipped off to Germany.

Residents of Swakopmund’s Riverside and Kramersdorf suburbs say a local tour operator’s camels are becoming an increasing menace. The animals step on gardens, eat away the local natural greenery, are walking the streets and their urine also leaves a stench. “The camels were nice to have in the beginning, but we understood they are numbering 25 at the moment and not all are used for tourism and are left to roam the area. We don’t want to deny any person the right to run a tourism business, but we need the owner to keep the animals under control”, said one resident to Namib Times.

First consignment of manganese for export via Lüderitz The historic first consignment of manganese, originating from mines in South Africa's Northern Cape, arrived by train at Lüderitz last week, destined for exports to various overseas markets via the Namibian Ports Authority's (Namport) port of Lüderitz. The national rail carrier TransNamib made an announcement in this regard last week. Totalling 520 tons, this consignment promises to create job- and business opportunities not only in Lüderitz but also to Aus, Keetmanshoop, Karasburg and Ariamvlei which are on the same route. South Africa produces 33,5 % of the world's manganese and among the biggest and best quality manganese are to be found in Northern Cape mines. Lüderitz poses the most economic and time efficient route for the export of manganese by these Northern Cape miners and so far there is a commitment for 30 000 metric tons per month to Lüderitz for export.
Erongo yielded 9 000 new voters Sharlien Tjambari The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) says of the 20 772 voter registrations recorded in Erongo during the supplementary voters registration process that closed on 27 June, just under half were new registrations (first time registrations). The rest were for duplicate voters cards (8 528) and change of regional address (3 090). The new registrations amounted to 9 151 people. According to ECN's Regional Coordinator for Erongo, Kashidinge Lukas Nghipuilepo, the Swakopmund constituency recorded the highest number of new applicants with 3 252, Walvis Bay Urban recorded 1 563, Walvis Bay Rural 1 207, Arandis 1 088, Karibib 865, Omaruru Constituency 623 and Daures Constituency 553. Nghipuilepo explained: “During the supplementary registration, which took place between 8 and 27 June this year, a number of challenges were encountered. Namibia goes to the polls on 27 November for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections. Seagoing Namibians will cast their votes on 13 November and so also Namibians living abroad.

Authorities don’t pay heed to residents complaining over wood harvesting Floris Steenkamp Dozens of people continued over the weekend to harvest and remove wood from the Swakop River and surroundings, knowing all too well the authorities will sit idle and not lift a finger to stop it. Residents in Kramersdorf contacted the newspaper over the weekend, following our front page article in Friday's edition highlighting the continued plundering of protected resources in the area. The area forms part of the Namib Naukluft Park, but trees and shrubs are unrooted and carted off as firewood. “We reported the matter to the municipality of Swakopmund, to officials of nature conservation. Unfortunately, all our plights fell on deaf ears”, a very concerned resident explained on Saturday. Pictures were sent to the newspaper from several residents. What emerged from the pictures are that a certain person is in charge. This person rotates people who are moving into the area and then emerging with bundles of wood, carrying it off in the direction of Mondesa. “This guy is the main agent. It is clear he is in charge and sells the wood in Mondesa. He has people working for him. The teams are exchanged several times a day”, it was further explained.
Public asks questions as to how Fermar Seafoods could have obtained white mussel license Floris Steenkamp The coast’s angling fraternity expressed their appreciation this week for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources’ prompt action to cancel the experimental license of Fermar Seafoods CC to harvest clams along the coast between Pelican Point and Paaltjies at Walvis Bay. The white mussel (Donna serra) is also classified as a clam and therefore Fermar Seafoods was within its right to harvest white mussel, but the Namibian public, including anglers, were afraid this would instantly wipe out the white mussel populations. Hence the appreciation the Ministry withdrew the licence and all harvesting that stopped promptly. Amidst satisfaction, there were also those who have questions as to how such a licence could have been approved in the first place, and secondly how the Permanent Secretary of Fisheries Dr. Moses Maurihungirire could have subsequently approved an exemption to Fermar to reduce the size of the white mussel from 38mm to 28mm. “We would like the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources to seriously look into the Fermar case”, we feel there are a lot of answers still not provided to the Namibian public”, a group of anglers told the Namib Times.
Pictures seen here is proof that large quantities of wood are carried off daily. What is questionable is how the authorities can allow this. Second question: for how long will there still be trees and shrubs, asked residents of Kramersdorf

AIMS brings dangerous goods training to industry at the coast Earlier this month, the African Institutional Management Services (AIMS) announced that it received accreditation from the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority on 24 May 2019. According to AIMS Marketing and Business Development Manager, Ms. Natasja Gawanas, this now makes them a certified Aviation Training Organisation (ATO). The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) attended the launch of the programme and learnt that AIMS will offer IATA Dangerous Goods Categories 1-12 at its Vocational Training Centre in Arandis. The training commences in August 2019 and has various options, ranging from 1 to 5-day training sessions. The course includes an assessment, which requires candidates to achieve an 80% pass mark in order to successfully complete the training course. The IATA Dangerous Goods certificate is valid for 2 years. “Through these sessions, we are able to assist companies to stay abreast of the latest industry regulations and procedures, says Ms Gawanas. The training offered ensures that those tasked with the handling of dangerous goods and cargo shipments at companies comply with international industry standards and equally prepares companies to provide detailed services to clients with knowledge and problem solving techniques. Those motivated to apply for the training range from shippers, packers, staff of freight forwarders, operators and ground handling agent staff, passenger handlers, flight crew members and security staff who are involved with the screening of passengers and crew and their baggage. AIMS was established in 1998 and
is registered with the Namibian Training Authority (NTA)
and accredited with the Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA).

Corridor Group congratulates Government and Namport The Walvis Bay Corridor Group extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Namibian Government, the Namibian Ports Authority and indeed the entire Namibian Nation for the foresight of investing in economic infrastructure that will greatly contribute to the economic upliftment of our country's future generations.
The Inauguration of Namport's new container terminal at the Port of Walvis Bay in the beginning of August, exhibits one of the single biggest investments into Namibian infrastructure in the last decade, which creates the huge potential to serve as a catalyst to enhancing economic activities for Namibia and our neighbouring countries. The new container terminal serves as further testament to Namibia's ongoing drive to position itself as a regional trade hub, linking our neighbouring countries to the rest of the world. The WBCG remains actively involved in ensuring the effective promotion and marketing of our transport and logistics sector. With a strategic focus aimed at attracting new business, we look forward to the next 6 months of 2019 and indeed beyond. It is now time to consolidate all other required services in the chain to ensure the smooth transit of envisaged cargo flows to and from Walvis Bay. Hence, the WBCG has embarked on several engagements with all relevant stakeholders in in and out of the country. Together we must ensure this investment is of regional importance and significance to the benefit of not only Namibia but all our land-linked neighbours. We call once again on our stakeholders to join us as we move the Namibian House to the next level of ultimately becoming the preferred Logistics Hub in SADC.

The De Duine staff that received awards
School Board appreciates staff Rudi Bowe
The School Board Members of De Duine Secondary School recently showed their appreciation to the teachers and institutional workers of the school. The most fundamental psychological need is to be appreciated. We all want to feel fully appreciated for what we do. Donavan Paulse, a School Board member of De Duine Secondary School said at the event “Today is about saying thank you, a word that we are being taught since our toddler years”. Paulse added that before you can show your appreciation to someone something
needs to be done. “Today marks a day of being proud of yourself and look at the amount of lives that you have influenced, the hearts that you touched and the believes of the future of the Namibian child. You as teachers are responsible for changing a Nation and for that we need to appreciate all the teachers” Paulse added. “There are not a lot of people that appreciate the work teachers are doing and teachers feel that they are not appre-
ciated enough, but events like this makes us think again. Small things make a big difference in lives. If a teacher taught 40 children in grade 8 for five years he or she touched the hearts of a 1000 children, for 10 years 2000 children, 15 years 3000 children, 20 years 4000 children, 25 years 5000 children, 30 years 6000 children and 35 years 7000 children”, Paulse explained. The Principal of De Duine Secondary
that they should have. “Sometimes we as teachers neglect the main reason of our existence at schools and that we work with children” Van Wyk said. Van Wyk thanks the De Duine School Board for making the teachers of De Duine feel like teachers again”. The payoff for inspiring teachers is that people do more for those who appreciate them. Although people widely recognise the need for appreciation, it tends to be a blind spot. Teachers generally believe that they are much more appreciative of people than people think they are. Therefore,
people do more for those who appreciate them. God has entrusted all teachers with an enormous task to touch and influence the lives of people, to make or break them and be accountable for their decisions and to be true to themselves. Teachers need to be sure what they, invest in as they will bear the fruit. Van Wyk added that the professional identities of teachers are always under attack with new challenges, policies and social responsibilities in the education environment and the demands from the communities become more difficult. Teachers then forget the point of being a teacher and the caring nature

Lombardt-Fire Truck operational, residents say otherwise Sharlien Tjambari
With the recent fire in Ongulumbashe informal settlement which burned down two shacks right opposite the Fire Brigade Department of Usakos, residents feel that the department is just a white elephant. The Fire Station was completed towards the end of 2015 and is situated in the Hakhaseb location just opposite Ongulumbashe informal settlement. According to the Chief Executive Officer of Usakos Town Council Ivin Lombardt, the building has been operationalised since construction was completed and the Council is working on the official inauguration of the building either by the Minister of Urban and Rural Development or his assignee or the Erongo Regional Governor or his assignee. Inauguration of the building is not a prerequisite for the operationalisation of the building. Operations can be done from the building and the inauguration may take place after operationalisation of the building. The residents of Usakos alleges that the Fire Brigade truck is not working, and they were apparently informed that the truck is broken. “Earlier this year, we were told that council will fix the truck in May 2018 but, we are still waiting”, said a lady who lives in the Ongulumbashe informal settlement while Lombardt said the fire truck is being used frequently for multiple disaster risk management purposes. “The truck, indeed, is operational but the mechanical part (firefighting pump) that facilitates supply and control of water for fighting fire is defective currently”. He further said the pump of the Fire Truck was examined by the repairer (supplier), quotations have been obtained and is currently being worked on in Okahandja at a workshop. “It will be reinstalled as soon as it done and operations should normalise”, he added. According to Lombardt, in the event where there is fire, the council staff members are allegedly mobilised and dispatched to any area where there is fire to fight fire with available equipment, tools and machinery at disposal of the Council. “The Manager: Technical Services of the Council is the focal person whom any person in need of firefighting service may call. His mobile number is readily available to every person” Lombardt said.
