A giant sinkhole measuring twenty metres by forty metres and estimated at 10 metres deep occurred in the port of Walvis Bay on Saturday, shutting down all operations at berth number 5 for the foreseeable future. An investigation revealed the sinkhole occurred after a part of the quay wall on the seafront collapsed. This caused sediment to flow from under the quay floor into the sea and the cavity that formed eventually collapsed to form the giant sinkhole. An investigation revealed the collapse occurred on a section repaired in 1959. Repairs have already begun and Namport foresees the repair work to be concluded in the next two weeks. Daily operations at the port on berths one to four and six to eight are not affected. No fatalities or injuries were recorded.

would be an impact on EBHN's business. We anticipated a 30 % drop”, explained Uys. However, since November last year things turned for the worse. Business dropped to as much as 60 % and in January and February this year it deteriorated to such an extent retrenchments became unavoidable. Uys further explained EBHN will look for project business at the uranium mines and marine industrial and ship repair business in the local market, traditionally the pastures for the smaller, local operator. “For our strategy of diversifying we need to compete with the local market. We always tried not to do it and had a gentleman's agreement to stay out of local business. The reality is we cannot do this anymore and we will now aggressively toe our way into the local market”, he said. With local market Uys also meant the market share of the bigger local stakeholders will be pursued, including transnational companies from South Africa and China. EBHN will also look to increase its share of business from repair and maintenance of the patrol fleet of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and said the company is adequately equipped and experienced to attract ship repair and maintenance from De Beers Marine which is reportedly only supporting ship repair industries in Cape Town. EBHN is geared in all aspects according to Uys. The company's range of services includes design, fabrication, mechanical repairs, coatings, pipe work, valves, machining, rigging, carpentry, cranes and electrical. Workshops and shipyard infrastructure covers more than 5000 square metres and three floating docks with a total lift capacity of 30 000 tons. EBHN's losses just the past seven months equalled the monetary wealth the company under normal conditions accumulated over two years, according to Uys. With regard to the retrenchments Uys said of a total of 102 retrenchments, 82 staff accepted voluntary retrenchment packages.

Former health minister Richard Kamwi wants total elimination of malaria Piquet Jacobs Former Minister of Health, Dr Richard Kamwi, is at the head of an initiative co-ordinated in an effort intended to eliminate malaria in four southern African countries by 2020. In 2009, together with Professor Richard Feachem of the University of California, the partnership Elimination 8 (E8) was launched.

The concept of the E8 brings together “the frontline four”- Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland; together with their northern neighbours – Angola, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The frontline four are the countries expected to eliminate malaria by 2020, being the first mainland African countries to eliminate malaria, followed by the second-line four. No mainland African country has eliminated malaria to date. Mauritius, an island, is the only SADC country that has eliminated malaria. The collaboration project has effectively mobilised close to US$20 million for 2016 – 2018 from the Global Fund and University of California, to support this important regional goal. “Soon after leaving office, serving the people of Namibia as Minister, I was appointed as the E8 Ambassador, in March 2015. I humbly took up the request made of me by the SADC Ministers of Health, to serve the region by facilitating this

regional collaboration. Elimination is an ambitious but attainable goal for southern Africa. Significant progress has already been made in the region, and both Swaziland and Botswana are poised to eliminate malaria by 2018. Since 2000, cases and deaths in the eight countries have declined by 96% and 90% respectively. As this team gathered here, we have an incredible and historical opportunity to pave the way for Africa; indeed, the rest of the region and the world will be closely watching what we do here, and the focus has to be on results,” commented Dr Kamwi at the opening of the E8 strategic planning held on Tuesday, 9 August. The E8 strategic planning commenced on Tuesday in Walvis Bay and is set to end today. At the opening of the planning, Dr Kamwi, who is one of the E8 ambassadors was accompanied by the E8 Secretariat Director, Kudzai Makomwa.

Tourism Minister takes hard General of Police urges stance against crime where communities to identify criminal elements tourists are targeted Floris Steenkamp

Erwin Leuschner

The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, has called on law enforcement agencies and residents of Henties Bay to be vigilant and act proactively against “unacceptable acts of violence” against tourists. He made this remark during the official opening of the brand-new Henties Bay Tourism Centre recently. Violence against tourists has far reaching consequences in the aspirations as a sector and Namibia as a destination. This was Shifeta's key statement when he officially opened the brandnew Henties Bay Tourism Centre on Friday last week. Town Council invested N$8.1 million in the construction of the centre. “I would like to use this opportunity to discourage those elements that tarnishes the image of our country and or seek to jeopardize our efforts in growing tourism in the country (sic),” Shifeta said; and added: “There are individuals or groups that have made a reputation for violating our tourists.” The Minister called on the relevant authorities to stand up and act against these crimes. “Our visitors and tourists deserve protection and warm hospitality from all of us. It is our collective duty to make Namibia a place where visitors and tourists enjoy peacefully without experiencing an act of violence during their stay anywhere in the country (sic),” he said. Shifeta also called on the residents of all Namibian towns and villages to keep their towns clean, thereby creating a welcoming environment for tourists. In his statement the Minister welcomed the construction of the new centre saying that it will add value and improve accessibility of information and services required by tourists and will further contribute to the overall tourism growth of the town of Henties Bay, the coast and

the country at large. “The tourist centre will provide visitors and tourists to the town with information not only on tourism attractions, accommodation establishments in Henties Bay but also information, maps on areas and location around and the vicinity (sic),” he said. Shifeta reminded the attendees that the significance of tourism as an economic sector is recognised globally. The Government of Namibia has therefore recognised the tourism sector to have potential to contribute significantly to the social upliftment and economic standards of the people through the creation of jobs especially for the semi and unskilled members of the society to alleviate poverty (sic).

The Namibian Police cannot succeed in its fight against crime unless the communities of Namibia play their part. This was the message on Monday of the Inspector-General of the Namibian Police Lt-Gen Sebastian Ndeitunga at the opening of a Police Attaché and Diplomacy Workshop in Walvis Bay. Senior police officers of all of Namibia's fourteen regions attended the workshop. “The Police is doing its best and are ready to do whatever it takes to fight crime. I therefore request communities play their part as well”, General Ndeitunga said. Appealing to community leaders, church lead er s , s ch o o ls , social clubs, public and private organi-

sations and socie-ty at large to unite with the Namibian Police to combat crime. “Let us be part of the campaign to isolate the few criminals prowling our streets and causing unnecessary s u ff e r i n g . L e t u s isolate those criminals involved in poaching our wildlife and those promoting such crimi-

nal activities by providing the market for these illegal activities,” said General Ndeitunga. He implied communities know best who the criminal elements among them are. Some even have names and addresses, but the Namibian Police need information in order to isolate these individuals, carry out arrests and deliver them to the criminal courts. General Ndeitunga expressed his appreciation for Namibians who remain vigilant against crime and take the Namibian Police in their confidence with crime tipoffs and identifying possible criminals.

Baby boy almost snatched Piquet Jacobs in broad day light Child abduction becomes a frightening reality, as a mother had to fight for her child in broad daylight in front of a popular store in Walvis Bay on Wednesday morning. According to Ané Van Zyl, she had just parked in front of the store to run an errand; her young son was in his car seat. While getting out of her car to take her son out of his car seat, a lady in a white Bantam bakkie caught her attention. The lady was hooting and pointing to her direction continuously. It became apparent that the woman was trying Van Zyl to turn around to see that two men were trying to abduct her young son. When Van Zyl turned around a man was seated in her car while another had already managed to loosen her son from his car seat. She immediately ran around the car and grabbed her son from the man that had the boy in his hands; this man then ran off. Van Zyl then came around to the passenger seat to get the other man out of her car. When he started pulling and shoving her, she then pushed him away from her and in this movement he scratched her in her neck and also ran off. “This morning in front of Magic Discounters two "meneertjies" opened my car door, got in while another was

about to grab my son. After I got my son in my hands the one pulled my hair, almost completely out of my head and scratched my neck. Thanks to the woman with the white Bantam bakkie, if it wasn't for you I may not have gotten rid of those men,” commented Van Zyl about the incident.

Bigger police force brings less success against crime Namibia has increased its police force since independence from 800 to 17 000 to date – but even though these figures are impressive, has the Ministry of Safety and Security achieved what it set out to do? Monthly Monitor: July 2016 July was a positive month for various emerging market assets and currencies, including for South Africa (SA). Market Review: Weaker than expected United States (US) economic growth for the second quarter of 2016 came in at 1.2%, making investors believe that there is a smaller chance of a US interest rate raise for September. This combined with added monetary stimulus from the Bank of England means lower interest rates for longer in the Developed World. Brexit vote aftermath effects are still weighing on the Pound and the Euro. The result is investors looking to emerging markets (including SA) in search of yield. Capital Inflows into emerging markets have seen their currencies strengthen. In July alone the SA Rand (ZAR) gained 5.6% against the Euro, 6.0% against the US Dollar (USD) and 6.9% against the Pound, according to Stanlib analysts. See Table 1 below for asset class returns over various periods: Table 1: Asset Class Returns (in N$):

Source: Glacier Research

As the ZAR strengthened, local bonds outperformed and local property followed the trend. On the other hand, the strong ZAR detracts from foreign share performances in local currency terms. Local shares' below-average year continues, despite resources shares experiencing a pick-up over the past few months. Portfolio Performance: Although markets can be volatile over shorter periods, like a month, they become more predictable given enough time. Table 2 shows the 1-year and 3-year (per annum) returns ending July 2016 of our five managed portfolios. The returns are calculated based on gross internal rates of return (IRR's) from actual client data: Table 2: Portfolio Returns over a 12-Month and 36-Month Period: Table 2: Portfolio Returns over a 12-Month and 36-Month Period:

Source: Actual Client IRR's off Sanport

With both local and global shares struggling to make a good performance in ZAR terms, portfolio performances are still under pressure over the shorter term. However, over a 3year period as seen in Table 2 above, all our portfolios are either in-line with, or beating their expected returns. A well-diversified portfolio is always a good strategy to follow, especially in times of market uncertainty. Conclusion: External events have caused some foreign currencies, such as the Euro, to weaken against the ZAR. However, SA needs to focus on local issues to support currency strength. These issues include a high unemployment and inflation rate, fiscal spending allocations and political stability. On the other hand, budget deficits have narrowed slightly and foreign credit rating agencies have left SA's rating unchanged. SA now has time to improve on its weak points before the next foreign credit rating review in December.

So glaube mir: kannst ruhig schlafen, Ich steure immer wieder her.

Distance Records with Single Tank of Fuel Smashed on Continental Tyres

With the high cost of fuel being top of mind for most motorists, a team of drivers has shown just how far you can drive on a single tank of fuel. They achieved all-new distance records for petrol and diesel-powered vehicles, with both cars used for the exercise relying on Continental ContiSportContact 5 tyres.

With the backing of Continental Tyre, Porsche SA, Volkswagen SA, Total and Car Magazine, the objective of the experienced team of economy aces was to beat their own existing South African one-tank record of 1 941 km, set in 2011 with two VW Golf Bluemotion 1.6 TDI models. The team comprised Malcolm Kinsey, Con Engelbrecht, Schalk van Heerden, Huibert Phielix, Ken Sink and Rod Kinsey. Under the close scrutiny of Total Economy Run veteran and motorsport Clerk of the Course Cobus Grobelaar, the crews began at the South African border with Zimbabwe at Beit Bridge on Friday 22 July, driving a Porsche Panamera 3.0 V6 Diesel and a VW Passat 1.4 TSI. With the fuel tanks brimmed to the very top, the two cars set off along the N1, travelling via Pretoria and Bloemfontein all the way to Cape Town, before heading north up the West Coast. In order to ensure the validity of the record attempt, the drivers were required to stick to all the normal rules of the road - albeit travelling at a fuel-saving average speed of approximately 69 km/h in the VW Passat, and around 80 km/h in the longer-geared Porsche Panamera. Other than pumping the ContiSportContact 5 tyres to the maximum recommended pressures in order to reduce rolling resistance, no other changes or modifications were allowed. After two-and-a-half days of driving, excluding the obligatory overnight stops, the Passat eventually ran out of fuel at around 6 pm on Sunday evening on the N7 approaching Morreesburg. In the process it notched up a new one-tank record for petrol-engined cars of 2 029km, translating into an average fuel consumption of 4,1 l/100 km. The Panamera soldiered on for another four hours, eventually coming to a halt at almost 10 pm after clocking a remarkable 2 201 km, for an average of 4,9 l/100 km. "This record-breaking fuel economy and distance challenge shows just how effective fuel-efficient driving can be, delivering longer distances per tank, while also saving money and reducing the impact on the environment," says Niel Langner, Marketing Manager for Continental Tyre SA. "What is even more remarkable is that both cars were fitted with the Continental ContiSportContact 5, one of our sportiest high-performance tyres that delivers excellent grip, handling and braking. "This proves that with the right tyre, motorists can enjoy exceptional performance and safety, while also benefitting from low fuel consumption and high mileage," Langner concluded.

Theo Beukes from Eliminators new Namibian Closed Champion

Theo Beukes from Eliminators Table Tennis Club is the new Namibian Closed Champion after defeating his fellow club member Melanky Farmer in three straight sets. On his way to the title, Theo defeated the likes of Yannick Bohn, Rudi Saunderson and Ramon Hansen convincingly.

Mixed doubles

Theo and Melanky

The veteran was simply in devastating form and almost added the men's double gold medal to his tally in a closely contested match where he and Melanky Farmer had to bow the knee to the formidable doubles pair of Rudi Saunderson and Ramon Hansen. The pair of Wulf Pinsenschaum and Dietrich Mowes took the third spot. The seasoned Christa Mrozek defeated the youngster Kaitlyn Beukes in the women's single finals with Michelle de Koker and Beulah van Wyk taking the bronze medals. Michelle then teamed up with Wayne Green to win the gold medal in the mixed doubles followed by Christa Mrozek and Wulf Pinsenschaum in second place and Kaitlyn Beukes and Yannick Bohn in third place. The men's plate was contested between two brothers, Daneel and Tjaart van der Walt, with Daneel taking the honours in a very entertaining battle. This competition was very well supported by twenty four young men and ladies from Rehoboth who gave a very good account of themselves flexing their skill and ability against that of the more seasoned players. The full results were as follows: Mens Singles Open: 1. Theo Beukes 2. Melanky Farmer 3. Ramon Hansen and Dietrich Mรถwes Mens Doubles: 1. Rudi Saunderson and Ramon Hansen 2. Melanky Farmer and Theo Beukes 3. Wulf Pinsenschaum and Dietrich Mowes Ladies Open: 1. Christa Mrozek 2. Kaitlyn Beukes 3. Michelle de Koker and Beulah van Wyk Mixed Doubles: 1. Michelle de Koker and Wayne Green 2. Christa Mrozek and Wulf Pinsenschaum 3. First ever NASP championship Over the last two days (6 & 7 August), 109 archers from 12 schools/ organisations competed in the first Namibian NASP CHAMPIONSHIP at the SKW Sportsgrounds in Windhoek. Saturday morning started off with the senior and junior individual bull's eye flights. After lunch time, the archers tried their hand at 2D and 3D. This was a first for many of the archers. Sunday saw the senior (grade 8 - 12) and junior (grade 4 - 7) school teams competing for gold. Each team consisted of four archers (mostly 3 boys and 1girl). Teams had lots of fun during the 1/8, 1/4 and the finals. After many hours in the sun, many kilometres walked and for many, sore fingers, all scores were in and everyone awaited the prize giving with bated breath. The number of participants far exceeded the organizers expectations and the Championship will definitely become a yearly institution. NASP NAMIBIA would like to thank all archers, parents, teachers and archery instructors for a fantastic weekend and especially a BIG Thank You to the sponsors. Without them a competition of this magnitude would not be possible.
