Carnage as flight of flamingoes hits high voltage power line A reader of namib times alerted the newspaper to this scene of carnage yesterday where a flight of flamingoes hit one of Nampower’s high voltage overhead power lines east of Walvis Bay. The birds are attracted to the area by large pools of semi purified effluent that formed near the power lines. Some thirty carcasses were counted. The pattern in which the dead birds are scattered leaves little doubt that they were killed hitting the overhead power cables.

A 26 year-old security guard operating in Karibib allegedly committed suicide on Saturday morning after shooting himself with the company revolver. The incident was reported by Erastus Iikuyu, Acting Regional Crime Investigations Co-ordinator for Erongo. According to Iikuyu the deceased, Eugene Pieterson, was in the employ of 24/7 Security Company. He booked out the company's revolver in the morning at 06:00 as he had to escort money later to Usakos. “He thereafter went to his room and informed his colleague to wake him up at

around 07:30 for the escort,” Iikuyu said. When his colleague went to his room to wake him up at 07:30 there was no answer and the door was locked. The colleague went to the window, which was open, and he observed the deceased lying in a pool of blood on the floor. “It is believed that the deceased shot himself in the head with the revolver,” Iikuyu continued saying. No suicide note was found. The police does not suspect foul play and is investigating a case of inquest.

Young drivers encouraged to be responsible on roads

The DTA stresses the fact that as a driver, you are responsible for the lives of your passengers and those that depend on those passengers to survive and eat. One reckless act from a driver can leave children orphaned and push families into poverty if they lose their main or sole breadwinner. Stating that we need to be aware of that responsibility as drivers and not take unnecessary risks. Adding that prevention is better than cure. “Us, as young people, as the active citizens who make up the largest number of road

users, need to own up and do our part. When 16 out of 20 drivers stopped are driving under the influence of alcohol, then it shows a complete disregard for traffic laws and human lives on our part as young Namibian drivers. It is easy to say that NAMPOL, MVA Fund, Traffic Services and other law enforcement agencies must do more to prevent drunk driving and reckless driving. Yes, they can run awareness campaigns and arrest drunk or reckless drivers. But is that a solution or is it action that's being taken after people's lives have potentially already been put at risk?” Numbers that came from the first weekend of

the Oputuli Road Safety Campaign in Windhoek and Rehoboth from 30 September to 2 October were very worrying when 4 out of every 20 cars were stopped and screened and only 4 drivers were sober. Young drivers are encouraged to choose a designated driver amongst friends when drinking, who will ensure that everybody arrives home safe. If there is no designated driver available, then it is advised to call a sober friend. “Young lives are too valuable and important to be lost because you decided to take a chance. Namibian Youth, this my plea to you to stop taking chances and put our lives and future's first.”

Anti Plunder Action Group Gathers momentum and protest against live export of Marine Creatures A petition on which Namibians express their discontent with a Chinese company applying for permission from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine resources to capture and export to Asia live dolphins, penguins, seals as well as killer whales has surpassed the 6500 signature threshold. The recently formed Anti Plunder Action Group (APAG) confirmed this figure yesterday and said despite the group denied permission by the Namibia Ports Authority to hand a petition to the Master of the Russian vessel Ryazanovka at sea on Sunday, a public gathering at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club was also adequate to focus the attention of Namibians and the world on the issue. Radio stations in Namibia, the Namibian Broad-casting Corporation (NBC) as well as Namibian newspapers ensured a global audience has its attention on the matter. International environmental groups, including Sea Shepherd, also has the issue on its radar. Locally, a protest march is soon to take place where the petition will be handed to Namport not to allow the vessel in any Namibian port, the ships agent to distance itself from Ryazanovska and her owners as well as for the Namibian Government not to entertain any form of applications [current and future] for the capture and export of live marine creatures from the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), namib times was told. The Namibian Police approved an application by the organising committee of APAG for a public march and by yesterday afternoon a similar application was lodged with Walvis Bay's municipal traffic authority which will be tasked with traffic safety during the march. On the issue of Namport not allowing protesters to meet the Ryazanovka at sea to hand over a petition, the organising committee said they respect the port authority's stance on the matter. Namport is ultimately responsible for the safety of all port users, including ships anchored in the bay. The protest could also influence the port's ranking worldwide a Namport source explained to namib times yesterday.

Spokes person for APAG Katja Glöditschz: During an interview with NBC on Sunday. The Group is now recognised worldwide

One dead after weekend gangfight at Usakos The police in the Erongo Region is investigating a murder case in Usakos after a gang fight in the Onghulumbashe location on Saturday evening ended up with at least three people being stabbed with sharp objects. A 19 year-old male was arrested after allegedly killing Junias Shipopyeni Anyemba (25) and injuring his friend. The incident was confirmed by Erastus Iikuyu, Acting Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator for Erongo. It is alleged that at about 21:50 the deceased and his friends were involved in an argument with the suspect and his friends at a bar in Onghulumbashe location. What initially was only a quarrel ended up in a gang fight with the suspect allegedly hitting one of the deceased's friends with a cup in the face. After the assault the suspect fled the scene and ran to his house where he hid in a cupboard. The deceased and a friend followed the suspect to

his place, where they found the suspect's sister. They allegedly attempted to assault her, but turned their attention to the suspect when he jumped out of the cupboard. The fight started over again. “The suspect allegedly stabbed the deceased once on the left side of the neck and he died on the spot. The deceased's friend was also stabbed in the forehead and on his arms, but the injuries are not serious, Iikuyu revealed. The suspect, who also sustained minor stab wounds, was arrested.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Narraville community hall officially opened Piquet Jacobs The new Narraville Community Hall was officially inaugurated on Friday, 7 October, by the Mayor of Walvis Bay, Alderman Immanuel Wilfried, in the presence of Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Derek Klazen, and a crowd of proud residents of Narraville. The building is a fine piece of infrastructure with a fully equipped kitchen and a spacious hall. The hall is a focal point for neighbourhood and community activities in Narraville, Wilfried urged residents to identify a wide range of activities and uses that can be accommodated in the hall, apart from wedding receptions, meetings or conferences. The Mayor thanked the community of Narraville for being persistent in calling for the construction of this facility. He added that the help and input of the community will certainly bring joy to the lives of many in time to come. He shared his appreciation towards the input of the variety of designers, engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors and the municipal team responsible for this fine-looking building. “I have no doubt that it will become an extension of the success story that is Walvis Bay. This hall is another sign that the Municipal Council of Walvis Bay, despite some obvious challenges from time to time, will go the extra mile to provide decent services and facilities to its residents,” Wilfried commented. The event was well attended, with entertainment provided by the Namib Marimbas and the “Op en Wakker” senior group. The crowd could not mask their excitement to see the hall they had been waiting for for so long.

Gert Jacobie I will gladly contribute if this project make provision for the poorer and crime infested areas of town in the same manner as it is intended for the more well off and obviously the front door areas of the mayor and his cronies. Melany Gillham Ferreira This vessel was in Luderitz (months ago) to seek registration and was rejected after people saw that it was geared with equipment for killing whales and other large marine animals not just capturing them!So after being rejected here they move on to Walvis Bay who are actually entertaining the idea of allowing these monsters to carry on?!It's just outrageous! Richard Klein What I think is there is one or order minister is getting money out of this and that is why they allow this ship and when we look again it's catching our dolfins whales and what ever because he got his money and doesn't care about our country. Jacques Marais It is time to prosecute them. Herman van den Berg there may be Namibian stake holders involved? who knows these days whats on the cards, what is happening is blatend though. It was said that the seals, are demolishing the fish population when in fact it was the humans that did that.I should know,i was there. So!yes there are too many seals and too little fish and seals could provide a food source but why for the Russians?? and not for Namibians, everybody says ag shame when it comes to culling seals but whe kill sheep, goats, cows,,chicken and many more animals and that is good,i could go on for much longer but fact is there will be money involved and there will be Namibians involved, never do you see all the shareholders names on the documents and that is lately how deals are done allthough the officials need my whole pedigree just to operate a cell phone that was purchased with my own money, need i continue!!! John Snow Government should be held accountable , they allow these thugs to come in. Antonio Katali Only three-four documents not submitted. majority are, therefore they should provide us with relevant information . Jacques Marais It is payback time for the comrades to russia. Sell your country you made the promise then. Now we suffer. Jan Bekker The whole town of walvis bay must refuse supplies and service to this vessel should they request. Amanda Gabrielsen I THINK WE MUST BOM THE SHIP AND SINK THE BOAT..... Vic Grant This Ship is an eye blinder for what they are really up to. Kim Inger Heath This request should have had a big fat "no" stamped on it from the get go. That someone can even debate this issue is cause for concern. Louise Williams This needs to be stopped. Hannelie Wasserman Very disturbing. Jtt Nghiyalasha Tuutaleny I smell something fish there. Katja Bär Glöditzsch Just a correction please : The vessel's agent is Trans Ocean Logistics and not Trade Ocean. Thank you very much!

Inline Hockey National League Tournament at the Coast The annual Coastal Pirates Tournament of the NIIHA (Namibian Ice and Inline Hockey Association) league was held on the weekend of 23-25 September. Matches ran almost continuously all day from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon, with early morning starts and matches played until midnight. This was one of the six national league tournaments and was attended by teams from all the age divisions from the five clubs in Namibia. Competition was tough, with only one more tournament to go to determine the top four teams in each age division eligible to compete in the

NIIHA Championships to be held in Windhoek at the end of November. Playing at the Coastal Pirates Club means being able to utilise two courts simultaneously, a distinct advantage for the growing sport as more teams enter into the league. For the first time ever, over 100 games were played in one weekend, 106 to be exact, including some internal club matches played during the week. The Coastal Pirates accounted for 60 of the games played... with 17 teams, more than any other club! Playing on home ground, without the need to travel for hours, and the intense training the Coastal Pirates players have undergone these past weeks, paid off with win after win for the home team.

Skills Competitions for the 8U, 10U, 12U & 14U divisions drew the country's best players to showcase their skill level and compete for the honour of top scorer and top goalie. The next NIIHA league tournament will take place on the 4-6 November at the Coastal Pirates court in The Dome, Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre

The Coastal Pirates Open Division took top honours by winning all their games,... also undefeated for the weekend were the 8UA, 10UA, 12UA and 14UA teams. The 8UA team had their best tournament all year having built up skill as well as confidence. The Coastal Pirates 10UA team, who had shared the top position in their division with Cazadores after four tournaments, by winning all their games during the weekend, including a 6-4 victory over Cazadores, pushed themselves into the top spot in the league. The Coastal Pirates'

second 12U team in the A-league, 12UA Black, won two of their three inter-club games, with a very convincing win against Kamikaze's A team in the very last match of the tournament, while only having four players available. The Coastal Pirates 14UA team continue to shine, and remain unbeaten all season, having conceded only one goal in the five tournaments so far. The Coastal Pirates Open team continued to dominate, while the rest of the Open division showed mixed results, with two games ending in a draw.

Winners of the corporate league was Rotary Engineering, runners-up was Rössing 1. Rössmund Bowling Club would like to thank FNB for their generous sponsorship of N$15 000 and support over the years as well as every team and individual who participated in the league, as well as all the club members who lend a helping hand, as it would not have been a success without

them. Members of the public who would like to join the club can contact Christian Erasmus, christian@taranawa.com for more information.

DTA urges Namibian business community to take NPL by hand The DTA Youth League has expressed its disappointment by the lack of enthusiasm and corporate social responsibility that has been shown by the Namibian business community in assisting the development sports, and specifically football in Namibia. The Namibian Premier League consists of 16 teams. Each team employs 30 players and roughly 10 permanent staff. This makes a total of 40 people per team who are directly dependant on a functioning NPL to feed and take care of their families. This comes to close to 650 Young Namibians and their families who are directly dependent on football for their livelihoods. This should give you

an idea of the magnitude and importance of football in Namibia. No official announcement has been made as yet, but the NPL has possibly found one sponsor who is prepared to come on board for the upcoming season. This is good news indeed for all the football lovers and those who rely on football for their livelihood. The NPL has found itself in this position precisely because it has had to rely almost

exclusively on MTC for sponsorships in the past. “For the most widely watched and supported sports in Namibia, it is sad that the NPL has to be brought to it's knees first before any Namibian Company felt a strong enough corporate social responsibility to invest in Namibian Youth by investing in Namibian football,” com-mented Bensen Katjirijova, DTAYL Secretary General.
