Conservationists concerned over cob spawning migration

Urges anglers not to injure the fish Empty shop shelves whilst removing hooks or releasing as FMD ban picks up momentum the fish back into the water.......... Consumers at the coast must get used to Adopt Floris Steenkamp Anglers and conservationists discovered an alarming number of dead cob on the beaches south of Walvis Bay. That is since the annual cob spawning migration reached this area. There is only one explanation for the large numbers of dead cob: anglers don't know the correct procedure to follow when they release the fish into the sea and the wrong type of hook is used on the tackle. It is illegal to catch and keep cob between Pelican Point and the border line with Sandwich Harbour between 1 January and 31 March of each year. Many anglers continue to flout this angling regulation, but in recent days fisheries inspectors renewed their efforts to catch and fine the culprits. Releasing cob is the only option to anglers fishing in the area. However, anglers fail to adopt the proper techniques to release the fish safely into the water. They injure the fish and the fish dies shortly after being released. In other instances, anglers using the wrong hook- upside down, washes ashore and dies. An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in South Africa necessitated the Namibian Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry this week to ban the import of South African meat and other products processed from cloven hooved animals which include cattle, sheep, goats, game and pigs. The ban also includes the live-transit of these animals to Namibia if it originated from South Africa. The Agriculture Ministry announced the import Continued on page 2

Municipality says it is addressing the house fly problem The municipality of Walvis Bay this week admitted the fly problem the harbour town experiences is as a result of the rehabilitation of the sewerage water treatment plant. Some areas at the water treatment plant were identified where excessive fly breeding occurs and is now treated with chemicals (poison) and is monitored on a daily basis. In a statement the municipality apologise for any inconvenience the fly menace causes households and also assures the public that the problem is now addressed as a matter of utmost urgency.

Two schools at Swakopmund are facing overcrowded classrooms for the 2019 school year. Hanganeni Primary School and the newly established John /Awaseb Primary School confirmed this week they are full to capacity and a lack of classrooms means they will again have to operate on the platoon system (one school session in the morning and one in the afternoon). Hanganeni PS has 1299 learners. It has only 22 class rooms and needs an additional 11 class rooms if they want to move away from the platoon system which makes provision for two school days per day – one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Learners in Grades 2 and 3 have no alternative other than to attend classes in the afternoon. It is a challenge, as many don't have adult supervision at home during the morning. “With the Grade 1 enrolment this year things went much better than last year”, confirmed Mrs. Bertha Kadhila, the Principal of Hanganeni Primary School. Kadhila is also the Acting

Principal of John /Awaseb PS. The presence now of the John /Awaseb PS is the main reason why things went smoother this year, according to Khadila. The school was established last year in a record time to cater for Grade 1 placements. A total of 11 class rooms were constructed to accommodate. However, the 2018 Grade 1's are now the Grade 2's facing a space problem, as the eleven class rooms cannot accommodate two grades. The only alternative is the platoon system. Six Grade 1 classes and five groups of Grade 2 classes will attend school in the morning, whilst the remaining four groups of Grade 2 classes will

ban on Wednesday and said it was instituted with immediate effect. Hours later, shops at the coast published notices to that effect on shop shelves. By late yesterday many shops had empty spaces in the diary and canned meat product sections. The cold meats sections also had large empty spaces where South African products were displayed to the consumer barely two days earlier. FMD were detected in South Africa's Limpopo Province's Vhembe District. The district is an FMD-free area. On Monday, soon after the animal disease was detected, the South African authorities had to report it to the World Organisation for Animal Health. Namibia's response was a blanket import ban on all cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and antelope products. That is despite FMD at this stage only confirmed in the Vhembe district. Inquiries directed to the Meat Board of Namibia confirmed the various products that would now not be available on the Namibian shop shelves. An official also confirmed Namibia is about 70 % self-reliant when it comes to beef, sheep, pig and chicken meat. The Namibian consumer would therefore not be totally left out in the cold. The biggest threat though is price increases on Namibian meat products and supply shortages should the ban be in place for too long, according to this official.

attend classes in the afternoon. The school is not relenting and in the meantime has received a much welcomed sponsorship to construct four additional classrooms, Namib Times were told. Once completed, these new classes will accommodate the four Grade 2 groups who attend school in the afternoon. Hopes are high that this will bring an end to the platoon system. Another challenge the school faces is school uniforms. Very few learners have uniforms. An average 90% of the learners are coming to school dressed in ordinary cloths and it hampers uniformity. Kadhila called upon Government to speed up the construction of class rooms, as the problem with space will not end here. The demand for class rooms grow by the year and if more classrooms are not added to cater for the demand, the platoon system is most certainly to return. Each classroom accommodates about 39 learners.

Zimbabwe seeks private partner to operate its Walvis Bay Dry Port Contributed A subsidiary of the National Railways of Zimbabwe is seeking a private partner to operate a cargo handling and storage facility in its dry land port project at Walvis Bay, Namibia. In a notice, Road Motor Services (RMS), which is spearheading the construction of the port in partnership with the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) and the Namibian Port Authority, is requesting for financial proposals from aspiring companies. The bid is open up to February 7, 2019. According to the notice, the request for financial proposals is for the, "Operation of cargo handling and storage facility approximately 18 000 square metres at the Zimbabwe dry port in the port of Walvis Bay, Namibia". The project came about after the Namibian government in September 2009 granted Zimbabwe the piece of land to construct a dry port, which is seen as critical to boost the country's trade. Work on the dry port project started in 2014. According to officials, Zimbabwe's trade volumes through the port of Walvis Bay have grown significantly over the years to more than 2 500 tonnes a month. (Source: dailynews)

Conservationists concerned over cob spawning migration Continued from page 1 In the case of cob the fish may not be smaller than 40 cm and only two of the ten fish allowed as a bag limit may exceed 70cm in length. The life of cob. Cob start their lives as juvenile fish soon after the annual spawning between Sandwich Harbour and Meob (about 180km stretch). Shoals upon shoals of adult fish varying in size between 60cm and 120cm move south from the Skeleton Coast every year to Sandwich Harbour to spawn. The so called spawners vary in size between 70cm

and 120cm. The females release their eggs and male spawners fertilise the eggs. The shoals move deeper into the ocean after the spawning and moves northwards again to the Skeleton Coast. In an effort to protect the spawner segment of the Cob biomass, only two Cob of 70cm and more in length are allowed per angler. Furthermore, Sandwich Harbour is permanently closed to allow for the spawning process and the subsequent development of the fish larvae to take place unhindered.

The fish larvae are washed by the sea currents in a northerly direction during which the fish grows to 30cm within the first year and to 40 cm in the second year. Cob would spend several more years off the Namibian coast between Swakopmund and the Ugab-mouth reaching adult size. As the fish reaches adult size, they too migrate in a northerly direction to join the spawner population off the Skeleton Coast where they eventually too reach spawning age. And so, the process is repeated each season to migrate to Sandwich Harbour to spawn.

Instil a savings culture into your children Parents play a key role in the financial literacy of children. As they prepare their children for the New Year's first school semester, the subject of money between the parent and the child, will present itself one way or another. For a parent, this should be an opportunity to teach their children the importance of saving money for a brighter financial future. “Saving money is important. But the sad part is that we get to realise this by trial and error. To mitigate this and to ensure that our children do not go through the same ordeal, parents need to teach their children the importance of having a savings mind-set from a young age,” said Bank Windhoek's Head of Corporate Affairs, Hayley Allen. B e l o w, A l l e n shares a few tips on how parents can teach their children about the importance of saving money:

Give them a clear piggy bank Buy your children a clear piggy bank which allows them to see their money as it accumulates. Inform them that they will be getting money for chores done, good behaviour and grades. Tell them to write down the date and amount in a log book to keep track of the money being saved on a monthly basis. Once the clear piggy bank is full, take it to the bank accompanied by your child and show them how to deposit the money into a bank account. Open a bank account A bank account will make the children recognise a financial institution. This will also enable them to start a relationship with the bank at an early age. Let them know that

the money will continue to grow with interest as long as they do not spend it. Children and young adults up to the age of 18 years, can open a Bank Windhoek Solo Account which is a savings and transaction account tailor-made for their needs. The account's benefits are listed below: · No monthly service fees and free ATM withdrawals at Bank Windhoek ATMs. · Access to Cell phone Banking for features such as airtime top-up, E a s y Wa l l e t a n d payments to beneficiaries. · Favourable interest on funds in the Solo Account. · Free balance enquiry and ministatement at Bank Windhoek ATMs. · Debit and stop orders can be linked to the account.

Lead by example Leading by example is one of the best ways to teach children how to save. To do this, place your clear piggy bank next to theirs and make time to put in money regularly so that they are also motivated to do the same. Once a month, make an effort to take the children to the bank with you as you deposit your savings into your account. As they grow older, introduce them to cellphone and internet banking such as Bank Windhoek's Mobile App and iBank. Also, emphasise that if someone is living within their

means, they will be spending money that they can have and if someone is not living within their means, they are spending money which they do not have. This will help them to manage their money wisely and better, both in the short and longterm. Continuous money saving chats Have regular discussions with your children focused on the importance of money and why it needs to be saved. Invite your children to join conversations about the monthly family budget. “During the conversation, ask them what they would

Bank Windhoek's Head of Corporate Affairs, Hayley Allen like to save for and how they would like their financial future to look like. Encourage them to ask questions and in-

form them that money will always play a crucial role in their lifetime,” concluded Allen.

Township dogs and cats have a fighting chance Isaac Chikosi

Stray dogs and cats are a common sight for many people, but this does not end here. Numerous dogs in high density areas are also a menace for the public and traffic. Stray dogs and cats usually roam around in search of food or mates. Unfortunately, it is not only an inconvenience for residents in these areas but also a great discomfort for these stray pets. It is obvious that a longterm solution is necessary to curb and ameliorate the increase in stray animal populations. According to HaveA-Heart Namibia, a non-profit organisation, only 30% of the country's population has access to veterinary services. In addition, many pet owners from low income or no income households

have limited transport options too. “Ultimately some pets never receive any veterinary care or attention their entire lives”. It appears to be that the outcome of this is an increase in the population of stray dogs and cats. Furthermore, dog attacks can be anything from uncomfortable to lethal especially with rabid animals. Statistics show that 40% of rabies victims are children under the age of 15. Hence vaccinations and spaying or neutering animals often alters their tem-

perament making them less aggressive.” 92% of dog attacks are by male dogs and 94% of them are not neutered”, mentions Have-A-Heart Namibia. Despite this, pet owners have options. Controlling the breeding of strays can be an effective long-term option for most. As opposed to the inhumane method of “putting the animals down”, spaying or neutering animals halts the continual breeding process bringing down the numbers of unwanted strays.

Other organisations such as SPCA and Feed a Paw, work together with volunteers to provide veterinary services to the public, with Have-AHeart Namibia offering free vaccinations and sterilizations in Swakopmund and across the country. In retrospect, pet owners are responsible for the wellbeing of their pets and can take advantage of the opportunities provided by non-profit organisations to make sure that “man's best friend” is not subjected to cruelty and abandonment. Beach Rush

Rossmund Goes Pink

Rudi Bowe The first Standard Bank Beach Rush hosted by Namib Rage was a success with 60 runners and cyclist participating. The annual Tafel Lite Beach Bash is hosted by Namib Rage. This year the host decided to add the Beach Rush to their menu where participants can partake in a 5 or 10 km run and a 10 km Fat bike cycle race. Winners: Doulaine and Dina Holtzhausen with Lynne van der Runner-up: George Murasikiand Lynne van der Walt Walt

The Rossmund Ladies Section decided to ring in the changes by hosting a “Pink Ball” Golf Competition – the format was a “Betterball Foursomes “ - this offers a great opportunity for non-golfers as well as the “pros” to enjoy a day out in the fresh air. The competition attracted a field of 42 players of all ages – the youngest being 9 year old Monet Kok. Each team was issued with a “pink” ball at registration which had to be returned with their scorecard in order to qualify for double scores on certain holes. Lost balls - only three surprisingly enough – resulted in a fine and those golfers not adhering to the rules and/or not sporting a bit of pink were also urged by Vice Captain George Murasiki to donate a few dollars. All in all a great day was had by everyone - entering into the spirit of the day – this was to have fun. Needless to say the clubhouse was a buzz for prizegiving. Prizes for the Pinkest Players went to Gisela

Verbucheln and Miguel Tordesillas; the team of I. Shikongo and H. Abrahams took nearest to the pin on Number 12 whilst Number 7's prize went to the T. De Wet and M. Ludwig partnership via a lucky draw due to the pin having been returned to the clubhouse before all the field had passed by! Winners: Mom Dina and Daughter Doulaine Holtzhausen 46pts; Runners-up: Lynne (Ladies Cpt) and George Murasiki (V-Cpt) 42 pts; 3rd Place: Dad Helmut & Son Helmut Ndjendja39pts. Lynne thanked all the players, those who provided the prizes and the Rossmund Ladies for a tournament well played.
