Van Gogh masterpiece painted underwater at Marine Aquarium Erwin Leuschner Huge fish surround him. He stands steadfast, looks around and then casually continues with his work. Jean-Pierre Theron on Thursday, 5 May, did something bold. The wellknown Swakopmund artist painted a replica of Vincent van Gogh's “Stary Night” inside the National Marine Aquarium while various fish and a shark surrounded him. The act garnered a lot of attention when he dropped down in a diving suit and set up his canvas. “Well, oil does not mix with water and because of the adhesive properties of oil paints, it sticks quite easily onto canvas, displacing the water completely,” he says. But what convinced him to paint in such a unique location? “I saw a picture of a painting depicting coral reef painted in a van Gogh style and it dawned on me... Why not paint underwater scenes underwater? So I tested the paints on canvas in my bath tub at home first and ... it worked!,” he says. Having a work relationship with the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources he approached
them. “After some test trials in their tanks they approved me painting in the big aquarium,” he continues. He decided to paint an exact replica of “Stary Night,” because it will most certainly attract a wider audience. Theron was in the water for a few hours, while another diver filmed the whole thing. Many visitors came to see him paint and were amased. Some fish were also curious, even coming up very close to the canvass or the paint. The act was organised together with “Art Shop” in Swakopmund. The finished painting will soon be sold and the funds generated will be given to CHAIN, Children with Handycaps Action in Namibia.

Lothar’s gang behind bars Detectives of the Namibian Police made their first arrests of three members of an armed gang that robbed Lothar's Steakhouse in Walvis Bay's 6th Street last Sunday. Police public relations officer Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashipulwa could not divulge full details by the time of going to press yesterday, but preliminary information indicates the gang was also active in the Karibib-area before the May-Day robbery at the steakhouse. The gang of armed robbers is believed to have split up with a few that entered the restaurant as patrons earlier. When their cronies entered the steakhouse they stood up and produced their firearms.

Journalists must assist in Road Safety Erwin Leuschner
Erongo Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua has called on the press to due attention to road safety and preventative phrases, instead of only reporting on accidents. He addressed reporters yesterday before giving his speech to the newly elected members of the Erongo Regional Road Safety Forum (ERRSF). “Events like these (concerning road safety) are not so much important to the press. But if there are big accidents you see journalists running there,” he said, while mentioning the names of the some members of the press. He described this as a typical behaviour. “It is more prevalent to planning and prevent, but when it comes to it we are slow and drag our feet. Only accidents are very much more important,” he said and called on the press to give due attention to preventative phrases in their work.

14 New members of the Erongo Regional Road Safety Forum (ERRSF) were yesterday appointed by Cleophas Mutjavikua, Governor of the Erongo Region, who called them on to sacrifice themselves for the people of Namibia
Erongo Road Safety Forum the Erwin Leuschner best in Namibia The Governor of the Erongo Region, Cleophas Mutjavikua, has called on the newly elected members of the Erongo Regional Road Safety Forum (ERRSF) to sacrifice themselves and not only think up ideas and initiative to reduce accidents, but to make sure that there are none at all. He made this statement after he appointed the new 14 members yesterday in Swakopmund. The Erongo Regional Road Safety Forum (ERRSF) is the most active and successful of all these institutions in the country. This was said by Nathalia Goagoses, Erongo Regional Council CRO, who continued saying: “While we made great strides and have many success stories more needs to be done.” The members were appointed by the Governor after they were carefully selected from over 200 submissions. Goagoses shared some highlights of the achievements of the previous members of the ERRSF and amongst others gave statistics about the amount of summonses issued during the past festive season. From 16 November 2015 until 18 January 2016 a total of 1512 summonses were issued in the Erongo Region amounting to a total of N$1 896 612.00. Of these summonses 42 were cases of drunk driving and 592 speed fines were issues. “We still experience drink and driving, especially amongst the younger generation,” Goagoses said. One big issue regarding this is the location of the current road block on the outskirts of Swakopmund on the B2 highway leading to Usakos. “People use the detour just before the roadblock to avoid being caught. We once had a case where we chased a driver and when we caught him, he was really heavy under the influence,” she said. In this regard she again mentioned the idea to have the road-block moved twelve kilometres further, past the detour, to prevent lawbreakers from using the detour. According to Goagoses another main issue she noticed included high ranking officials that do not adhere to traffic rules and regulations. “There are high ranking officials that just do not do the basics. They speed, overload their vehicles and do not put a safety belt on,” she noted with great concern. Amongst the achievements Goagoses highlighted the efforts by the West Coast Safety Initiative (WCSI), saying that it is one big partner and offers great assistance in raising road safety awareness. During his speech Mutjavikua called on the new members to come up with new ideas and interventions to deal with the congested B2 Highway between Walvis Bay and Karibib. “Nowhere in Namibia do we have a situation like this. On that 180 kilometre long road you find repeated congestion,” he said. He didn't say that the stretch was “dangerous”, but called on drivers to be “extraordinarily careful” when they drive on that road. “We have a logistics hub and we must make sure it runs smoothly,” he said. While there are various success stories Goagoses bemoaned the nonattendance of ERRSF members at meetings. The Governor reacted to this statement by calling on the members to sacrifice themselves for the people of Namibia as their assignment is very important. The new members of the forum will meet in the next two weeks to review the previous achievements and brainstorm new ideas to increase road safety in the region.

Walvis Bay had double honours over the weekend with both the luxury tourist train Rovo’s Rail and the passenger liner MSC Sinfonia calling at the same time. It posed a unique photo opportunity in that the tourist train and the visiting passenger liner could be fit on a single picture, as seen above with the train in the foreground and the massive smoke stack of the passenger liner visible on the background. Tourists are seen embarking the Rovo’s Rail to continue their journey to northern Namibia, whilst hundreds of passengers of Sinfonia disembarked to visit the town, Swakopmund and embark on day excursions to various places of interest around the coastal towns.

Young girl hit by car whilst cycling A little girl was on Thursday run over while cycling across the pedestrian crossing at the roundabout in the Swakopmund suburb Vineta (Daniel Kamho Avenue/ Vrede Rede Avenue). The injured child, who was said to be about eleven years old, was taken to hospital by Eagle Christian Ambulance Service. The incident happened at about 10:30, when the driver of a doublecab bakkie, Frans Amupadhi, was travelling along Daniel Kamho Avenue in a northern direction.

The public of Walvis Bay so often ask questions on development projects in the harbour town. Many of these projects take place in secure environments like the port of Walvis Bay where the public don’t have ordinary access. On other occasions the “bigger picture” remains elusive as developments, such as the fuel import facility takes place offshore out of the eye. At ground level it is also quite difficult at times to get a full perspective of the size of developments and how these developments line up with the adjacent areas. In a series of eight articles namib times, in conjunction with Namport and Guan’s Packaging bring our reader the aerial photography of Mr. Volker Pesch, the owner of Photo Volker in Walvis Bay. Pesch is a distinguished aerial photographer and a leading service provider at the coast in this regard. Botswana Dry Port cargo operations to start soon 1. The Botswana Dry Port (Item 1 on aerial picture) commenced operations in September 2014. Size of Botswana Dry Port: 36 233 square metres. The dry port will facilitate two way cargo movements between the port of Walvis Bay and landlocked Botswana. The dry port facility is currently leased to a cross border vehicle trading business, but formal commencement of cargo handling is anticipated for the near future.
Zambian dry port currently enlarged by Phase 2 project 2. The Zambia Dry Port (Item 7 on aerial picture) currently consists of a small area where limited space exist to handle container cargo destined for this Southern African neighbour. Work has commenced to develop a second dry port for Zambia (Phase 2)(Item 2 on aerial picture). The work is still in its early stages and a picture on page 10 shows progress to the earthworks.
Zimbabwe dry port operational by early 2017 3. Item 3 on the aerial picture shows around 35 % of earth works have been completed on the Zimbabwe Dry Port. Construction is due to conclude at the end of 2016 and this dry port is scheduled to become operational by early 2017. The approximate size of the Zimbabwe Dry Port is 18 332 square metres.
Passenger liner terminal and small craft harbour 4. Passenger Liner terminal (item 4 on the aerial picture) at Berth 9. A dedicated new cruise liner berth (to be called berth 9) is currently being constructed just next to berth no. 8 which is the bulk and break bulk terminal in the existing port set-up. Construction is part of the scope of work of the new container terminal on reclaimed land (item 5 on the aerial picture). This will be the first time ever that the port of Walvis Bay will have a dedicated berth for passenger vessels of up to 300m in length. On the inner-bound segment of this passenger terminal a new 120 meter small craft jetty for small boats and yachts will be established. (Item 4 a on the aerial picture). The new passenger berth will be commissioned by 2018.
New container terminal to smash all records
5. An estimated 50 % of construction of the new 40 hectares container terminal on reclaimed land (item 5 on the aerial picture) has been completed. This new terminal will enable the port of Walvis Bay to accommodate larger and longer container vessels carrying up to 8000 standard containers (8000 Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU)). State of the art cargo handling technology like ship-to-shore cranes will enhance efficiency at this new terminal, which is scheduled to start operations early in 2018. The new container terminal will have two berths of 600 meters in total length. This terminal shall have a capacity to handle 750 000 TEU's per annum. The port will also be deepened to 16 m at these berths to allow for the passage of larger container vessels. For the reader it is also clear now to see the strategic location of the Zimbabwe, Zambian and Botswana dry ports in close proximity to the new terminal, as significant cargo flows to these Southern African neighbouring countries will take place through the new container terminal.
No need to take this with a pinch of salt 6. It is planned the existing port of Walvis Bay in future only handle “clean” bulk, break bulk and containers. Currently the bulk terminal is also utilised for "dirty" bulk such as coal and manganese etc. The future of this area will change significantly with the completion of the SADC Gateway Port north of Walvis Bay. Coal and manganese and the handling of all other "dirty" bulk will move to the SADC Gateway Port, with salt, wheat and sugar [classified as clean bulk cargo] remaining at the core of bulk handling in this area. (Item 6 on aerial picture).
Namibia’s salt exports is set for a major boost, following an announcement that Walvis Bay Salt Refiners is working on a strategy to enlarge its production capacity. Bulk salt handling’s future is secured at the current bulk terminal as it is deemed a “clean” bulk product.

Kuisebmond Secondary School Feeding Programme Many learners who are part of the government school feeding programme at primary school level face a challenge once they enter high school as the programme only caters for primary schools. This was mentioned in the speech of the Minister of Basic Education , Arts and Culture, when she addressed teachers in the Erongo Region. This lack of a feeding programme at secondary school level was precisely why KSS decided to start one in June 2015. This need was identified when it was noticed that due to socio-economic circumstances learners could not perform optimally on empty stomachs. The programme has been running smoothly and around 100 learners receive a sandwich daily. However this is only made possible as a result of contributions from businesses and community members who have kept the programme afloat. Some learners are also assisted with toiletries, clothing and other needs. With winter approaching, jerseys and socks are needed. Any business or persons willing to contribute to assist in any way can contact the school at 205329 or Ms Adams at 0812397320.
Thank you The Principal, staff and learners would like to thank our main contributors who have made a major difference in the learning process of some of our learners. They are: * Walvis Bay Self Service * Walvis Bay Mayoral Relief Fund * Omualu Fishing * Binni Gardarrson * Tomas Kjelgaard
Seen in the pictures is some of the staff members at the school and food that the school received form the donors and is being prepared for the learners

Botswana arrives for Cossasa games, Swaziland withdraws Team Botswana arrived in Namibia on Sunday for the Council of School Sport Associations in Southern Africa (Cossasa) Athletics Championships to be held in Swakopmund from 12 to 15 May. The team consists of 60 athletes, 20 support staff and 10 management members.
Speaking to Nampa on Monday, President of the Botswana Primary School Sports Association (BPSSA) Busani Segweni said they are aiming for top honours throughout the competition despite injury concerns. “We are going there as hungry lions. We want to win this tournament. We intensified our training in field events and we are ready to compete,” he said. Segweni said Namibia normally does well in field events but lack similar dominance on the track, which they (Botswana) will capitalise on. “Namibia normally beat us in field events, but we will match them this time around. In previous years they always gave us tough competition but I am sure that this time around it will not be the same case.” Cossasa athletics comprise track events including sprints, middle and long distance running, hurdles as well as field disciplines such as javelin, shot-put, high jump and long jump. Namibia won the championships in 2013 and 2014. Zimbabwe is currently the defending champions after winning the competition in Lesotho in 2015. Botswana's team captain and discuss athlete Setso Rashaba recounted similar expectations of clinching more silverware at the championships. “We want better results. We have been training hard in recent weeks and I am sure that we will be the champions,” he said. However, some of the team's top sprinters such as Letsile Tebogo, Moloki Matikiti and Samuel Matlou are yet to be pronounced fit and ready to compete due to minor-to-major injuries. Meanwhile, Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) National Coordinator Solly Duiker told Nampa on Monday Swaziland has withdrawn from the competition. “They [Swaziland] just confirmed their withdrawal on Saturday evening due to unavailability of finances from the part of their government, but the other countries have confirmed their participation,” he said. The four countries to take part this year are Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana and Zimbabwe. (NAMPA)

Danny-Boy shares some of his boxing skills with youngsters Sharlien Tjambari The Dome Health and Wellness Centre hosted the Swakopmund/DRC Boxing Clinic as a community sports training event, where youngsters were invited to participate and learn some new skills. The event took place at the Netball Courts in DRC on 04 May. The youngsters who attended the event were given some drills and training exercises to do, they also got an opportunity to watch Albinus “Danny Boy” Felisianu sparring with a couple of other boxers in the ring. “This event allows us as the management Danny Boy signing autographs for the children team of The Dome and also our Dome Athletes with a chance to contribute and to give back to the community right in their home neighbourhood and to provide the young people with a sense of inspiration,” said Mrs Xenia Ivanoff-Erb, Brand Manager of the Dome Indoor Sports Centre. The clinic was educational, and provided a platform which allows the sport to grow in the local area. The highlight of the day included boxers having a few rounds of exhibition fighting to entertain the spectators. To end off the event, Danny-Boy integrated with the children by means of signing autographs and taking pictures with them. The event was well attended and was a success and also attracted some of the upcoming boxing stars of Swakopmund. “This is the first event we planned this year but there are many more events coming this year. There are so many things we want to do for the children in the community,” said the Sales and Marketing Manager of the Dome, Mr Dave Hammond, at the Boxing Clinic event. Some of the sponsors of the event were The Dome Swakopmund, The Dome Health and Fitness Centre, The Swakopmund Municipality and the Swakopmund Fire Brigade also played a vital role in the success of the event. The children were all happy to take pictures with Danny Boy
Botswana wants help from Namibia and SA to develop jukskei WINDHOEK, 09 MAY (NAMPA) - The Namibian Open Jukskei Championships that came to an end on Friday could be described as a tremendous success, despite Namibia losing in all but one division against South Africa. Namibia hosted the South African national teams and a two-man delegation from Botswana that came all the way to get first-hand experience about the sport, which is relatively unknown in their country. Kefentse Ogotseng and Evans Kesiilwe from the Botswana Traditional Games Association (BOTGA) were in Namibia on invitation from South Africa to witness and engage with various role-players to promote the sport in their country. Speaking to Nampa on Friday, Kesiilwe said he was impressed with the standard of the sport in Namibia and commended the local jukskei branch for their support and assistance. “There is a lot of potential to take the game back to my home country. The sport is hardly played there.” During the weeklong stay in Namibia, Kesiilwe and Ogotseng spent most of their time next to the field talking to players, coaches and umpires and even had time to meet members of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) jukskei team. This made Kesiilwe more enthusiastic about the future of jukskei in his country as he wants to see the two countries' national defence forces forming a bond on the jukskei field. “We met with the NDF team and as they are a strong team, we want them to take the game to our forces there.” Asked how he will go about promoting the sport in Botswana, Kesiilwe said schools and various government agencies would be a good starting point for development. “My dream is quite simple: I would like to see both Namibia and South Africa meet next year in Botswana where we will give you good competition.” Kesiilwe is the founder of BOTGA that was established when he, along with a group of concerned young people, united to preserve their culture and traditional games.
