The surprising rainfall along the central coast this week affected the mining operations of both the Husab and Rössing Uranium mine. Due to safety concerns the operations were stopped temporarily at Husab. While Husab recorded 36 mm of rain, it rained 22.2 mm at the Rössing mine site.

A second opinion sought, a municipal official with practical experience in building control explained the Namibian Government is not subjected to local authority building regulations. Plans for new buildings or changes to existing structures is nonetheless submitted “as a matter of professional courtesy”. The State is as a matter of fact not obliged to submit building plans, but in the case of parastatals, the same rules apply as for any property owner – submit building plans.

“We understood the land was still State land when the renovation project at Walvis Bay Airport commenced. However, in the meantime it was transferred to the ownership of the NAC and that changed the legal landscape in favour of the municipality with regard to the submission of building plans”, this official further explained. He referred any specific questions as to the plans that need to be submitted or on the terminal project itself to either the municipality's public relations department or the NAC. He was sharing his experience of building requirements in general as he would share with any member of the public lodging inquiries.

At the architects MacKintosh & Lautenbach it was explained that building plans would indeed be submitted now, in order to obtain the necessary completion certificate. It was not foreseen that the building plans would be rejected, as structural-, civil- and other engineers were involved in the development of the plans and a quantity surveyor oversees the project.

“We don't regard the current situation as a threat to the completion of the project. The issue of submitting building plans to a local authority where construction takes place on State land remains a legal grey area. We nonetheless view it as important to comply with local authority requirements as the local authority has an important role to play with regard to health regulations, registration of businesses and the provision of services to tenants at the new terminal building”, a senior stakeholder at the architectural firm said yesterday.

according to Nanghonga will afford members of the public and organisations to learn more about the importance of paying your taxes, to encourage voluntary compliance, show taxpayers how to complete income tax returns and provide technical information relating to taxes administered in Namibia by Inland Revenue.

“There are many Namibian taxpayers we can see are making enormous efforts to comply.

We are grateful for these individuals and businesses, but it is an unfortunate reality that some Namibians are less serious to be tax compliant,” explained Nanghonga on a serious note.

“If you don't comply there are consequences,” Nanghonga

warned. The Receiver of Revenue is empowered by law to take remedial action. These include penalties for non-compliance, interest on taxes in arrears and also repossession of assets to recuperate outstanding taxes through sales in execution, direct withdrawals from bank accounts and prevention to participate in public tenders.

“The Education Day is there for people to receive the tax compliance message. We are approachable and we can answer questions,” said Nanghonga, inviting all residents of Erongo Region to make use of Tax Education Day to get a better understanding of why and how to be tax compliant.

ACC nets three for massive fraud at Wesbank Transport The Anti Corruption Commission of Namibia (ACC) confirmed the arrest this week of three Walvis Bay residents, after a nearly five years long investigation into a massive fraud scheme involving close to N$6 million at transporting company Wesbank Transport (Pty) Ltd. Gavilan Theodor Klazen (Operations Manager at Wesbank Transport) and colleague Carl David Marx (Administrative Controller at Wesbank Transport) faces a total of 444 charges in a fraud and money laundering scheme they operated between 2008 and 2011 whilst in the employ of Wesbank Transport.

Klazen's spouse, Veronica Leonette Klazen was also arrested as an accomplice.

Gavilon Klazen was released on bail of N$50 000 and his spouse and Marx were freed on bail of N$30 000 each in the Swakopmund Magistrates Court on Wednesday. The trio were slammed with strict bail conditions and is due to appear in court again on 1 July this year.

At the Rössing Uranium Mine the haul trucks had to be parked for a part of the day on Tuesday, as the haul roads were slippery and not safe for operations. “As to the rest of the mine normal production continued,” Rössing reported. There was no damage reported due to the rain and the water pools forming in the pit quickly disappeared. According to Rössing the rainfall measured at Arandis was slightly more, being 29.6 mm. Residents of Arandis even reported hail falling.

Arandis, Karibib at the top, Usakos at standstill Erwin Leuschner

Karibib and Arandis are the two flagship towns of the Erongo Region showing best practices. This view Governor Cleophas Mutjavikua stated in his recent State of the Region address, which was held in Swakopmund. While praising these two towns, Mutjavikua noted with concern that “work has come to a standstill in Usakos.”

During his State of the Region Address Mutjavikua touched on all aspects in his region, one of them being the developments in many of the towns and settlements in Erongo. “Usakos remains a concern to all of us in the leadership as it is still operating without a CEO for the last three years. We are in consultation with the Ministry to get a new CEO in place to ensure that the municipality gets up and running again,” he said. The Governor showed further concern for both coastal hubs Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, which continue to experience serious residential erven and housing shortages. “The challenge of both Tutaleni and DRC is still on our to-do list,” he said, although the housing shortage has been an issue since the beginning of his tenure. According to Mutjavikua the discussions to construct a new suburb at Farm 37 close to Walvis Bay are at an advanced stage. This new suburb known as “Green Village” is earmarked for the ultra-low income category. “No shacks will be allowed, but residents will have to make use of the brick machines that had been donated to the region by the Turkish Development agency,” he said. Furthermore the Governor said that discussions are taking place between the Regional Council, the Office of the Governor and the Swakopmund Municipality to emulate the example of Walvis Bay, by coming up with another ultra-low income suburb east of DRC. “The metropolitan area of Walvis Bay/ Swakopmund is growing at an alarming rate and more residential ervens should be made available and we must pull in the same direction in the spirit of Harambee,” he said. Concerning other town in the region Mutjavikua praised Henties Bay. The town won the recent “Dorp van die Jaar” competition hosted by Kwêla (kyknet). “This is a testimony to all other towns to go there and study good practices,” he said. The Governor was also pleased about recent developments in Omaruru.

“An Acting CEO had been seconded to Omaruru and he brought stability to the town. I have a positive outlook for Omaruru,” he said. After a court battle dragging on for many years about the future of the small settlement Wlotzkasbaken, Mutjavikua now wishes to bring affordable development to the settlement. “Wlotskasbaken is a settlement administered by the Erongo Regional Council. So far 116 plots had been occupied and 142 plots had been demarcated, planned and surveyed,” he said. Currently the Erongo Regional Council is busy with a study to determine what types of services are needed and what the cost implication thereof will be. Concerning the future of Wlotzkasbaken Mutjavikua said that the acquisition of the new plots will be advertised in the media at an appropriate time. “The Erongo Regional Council is aware that Namibians who applied in the past had their applications nullified by the Court,” he said in this regard.

A young man almost lost his life after he was brutally attacked by gang members Sharlien Tjambari Recently a working class young man aged 26 from the coast was brutally assaulted and attacked by gang members in Windhoek, Otjomuise settlement, while he was on leave from work. He sustained a fractured jaw in the attack.

According to the young man, on the night of the incident he made a decision he will regret for the rest of his life, a decision that almost cost him his life. “I am the kind of person that like going out alone as I do not have a lot of friends and my 2016 resolution was to never go to Katutura to drink, but only drink in town” said the young man during a telephonic interview with namib times.

According to him, he went to town to drink, but he was not feeling the vibe and felt he was in the wrong place plus “the thought of beautiful girls and cheap alcohol was part of the reason I decided to change places and go to Otjomuise to experience the “kassie” life, he added.

According to him, he spend a few hours in Otjomuise and then decided to go to Eveline Street, a popular street in Windhoek where you will find a lot of bars and shebeens. “I didn't stay long at Eveline, just had two or three drinks, then I went to take a taxi thinking I would go straight home, but I changed my mind and told the taxi driver to take me back to Otjomuise” confessed the young man.

At Otjomuise he continued with his drinks in a bar and just when he knew he had enough, he went outside to get some fresh air before heading home. “I went out and while I was outside a man approached me and we started talking. The two of us stood there for a long while and later another young man approached us, pushing us apart. He faced me and asked me a question to which I responded to, because if I had not responded he would have seen me as a very weak person.

Things got out of hand very quickly and the man just took out a knife and that moment I knew there was trouble. Luckily someone who was watching the whole scene came to my rescue and took me to his car”.

The man who came to his rescue is apparently a well-known gang leader and asked him why the other guy with a knife was picking a fight with him and he said he didn't know. Later he got out of the car to shake hands as a sign of a truce with the other guy, but all the young man wanted was his blood so he took out the knife again and as he was opening it he moved a step back “if a person takes out a knife and moved a step back, you must know that person don't want to hurt you, but to kill you, so I ran towards him to take the knife from him. It was a struggle getting the knife from him. After I grabbed the knife, he ran inside to call his gang members and I decided to run for my life. I ran into the bushes and across the bushes to the other side of the street. It was late and there were no cars on the road at that time and the only car parked on the other side of the road made me suspicious. I immediately knew it was that gang looking for me, so I decided to stay in the bushes for a while and due to the alcohol level in my blood, I went to sleep. When I woke up the car was still there, so I decided to run towards the car as it was my only way out and then they all saw me and jumped out of the car. I hit one with a fist in the stomach and he fell, taking me along.

Another one kicked my face so badly that I fell on my buttocks, but I was too fast for them and I was back on my feet again, hit one with a fist and then I ran as fast as I could into the bushes. They fired shots at me but thank God, not a single bullet touched my flesh” says the lucky young man.

He says he does not remember how he got home and the next thing he felt was his painful mouth and head. He went to the hospital a day later and was told he had to undergo surgery because he had broken jaws. “My advice to fellow young Namibians is to please avoid drinking alone at night. If I had friends that evening, none of this would have happened. If you do not want friends, then please just drink at home or at a safe place. That evening I had a lot of money, but I didn't want to pay for expensive drinks in town and went to the location instead of staying in town where it is safe. What happened to drinking at home, house parties where you are surrounded with good friends? You are more in danger when you are alone. The rules on the streets have changed now and it seems like people would kill for the smallest reason or for none reason at all.”

Learners commemorates World Oceans day with Ministry of Fisheries Sharlien Tjambari

The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in collaboration with their partners, the Benguela Current Commission, Albatross Task Force and the Namibia Dolphins Project hosted the commemoration of the World Oceans Day on 08 June, at the aquarium in Swakopmund. World Oceans Day is the day to celebrate the ocean and to promote the sustainable use of the ocean with this year's theme being “Healthy Ocean Healthy Planet.”

As part of the World Oceans day celebration, which is commemorated annually on 8 June, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources hosted an open day at the Aquarium where they basically educated the public and the school learners on how to use the ocean sustainably. Inside the aquarium the ministry placed different stands or displays. There was a stand from the environment sub-division on intertitles, and at this stand they educated learners about collecting organisms found in the intertitles zones.

Ester Nangolo, a Senior Fisheries Biologists at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resource said intertitles zone are areas as you go along the coast, where you find some rocks and within those rocks you find some organisms in there “during low tides these organisms are more exposed so what we do is take the learners to those areas and teach them about the different organisms found there and how they adapt to those certain intertitle areas.”

of fish from various fishing companies and then we come sampling them here. Sampling in terms of determining the sex, the maturity stages and all that, so that is what you see at the pot sampling stand” adds Nangolo. Another stand was the Plank-ton stand where the learners saw the different types of phytoplankton or zooplankton. Phytoplankton being the little plants that you find in the ocean and the zooplankton are the animals, so the learners got to view this under a microscope.

Learners also got to see different fish eggs under the microscope.

There was an aging stand as well, where learners were taught how to tell the age of the fish by otoliths or E-lucius, “most of the fish that got otoliths they got little bones found in their head and you determine the age by looking at the different rings on there and we got one fish called the monk, the age of the monk is determined by the illusion, it's like a little antenna you find there and you also look at the rings to determine the age, that you can also determine using a microscope” say Nangolo. One of the stands that the learners found interesting was the Aquaculture stand where they found different shellfish for example oysters and mussels. At this stand learners were educated on fresh water farming which is commonly known as inland fresh water Aqua Culture and Mari culture farming of marine species. Mr Stephanus Hamutenya, a Biologist from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources said the ministry does not farm oysters but have a monitoring program that monitors the environment where oysters are farmed and those oysters to see if they are safe for human consumption “if they are harmful for human consumption then it means that they are toxic and can cause diarhoea or paralyses, so the ministry of fisheries make sure that farmers do not sell or export unsafe oysters,” says Hamutenya.

Leaners who visited the aquarium to commemorate the day came from Swakopmund Secondary School, Hanganeni Primary School, Kuisebmund Secondary School, Tutaleni Primary School, Swakopmund Primary, Namib Primary and Swakopmund School of Excellence. “Next year we would like this event to be bigger and better so we will incorporate all the coastal town for example Walvis Bay and Henties Bay” Nangolo concluded.

Walvis Bay resident Mr Naudé Dreyer shot to instant fame earlier this week when a video clip of him saving a juvenile male Benguela Dolphin went viral, with over 4,4 million hits within 24 hours. The clip also drew the attention of at least one international television news network.

Not in the least expecting this overwhelming response, Mr Dreyer posted the video with the following message: “on our way back from tour this morning, we came across this juvenile male Benguela Dolphin, still alive on the beach. It's not clear how he ended up on there in the first place. After a quick assessment and measurements, I attempted to get him swimming again. I was not very hopeful, but as soon as he got into water and realised where he was he took off like a bullet. Nice. The flatbed trailer of a truck carrying 25 tons of charcoal overturned on Tuesday during midday at the notorious roundabout at the Swakopmund Truck Port.

The thunder and lightning storm along the entire central coast of Namibia on Monday evening terrified many pets with a surprising amount of cats and dogs running away in fear.

“Many animals along the coast are not used to the thunder, which causes serious stress and anxiety,” local veterinarian Dr Lérica le Roux-Pullen said to namib times.

While Dr le Roux-Pullen received information from at least two clients, who have been missing their cats since the thunderstorm, the Society for the Prevention Against Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Swakopmund was also notified of a couple of cases where dogs went missing. “We received a call from a person that saw a terrified Boerbul close to the Strandhotel that night,” Ingried Gürtel, Kennel Manager of the SPCA, said. Her office was

also phoned by a couple of owners who were missing their pets since the storm.

“Especially if animals are not used to thunder and lightning, it can have the same effect as fireworks do,” Dr le Roux-Pullen explained. She advises owners to stay close to the animals, keep them company and if they want to rather hide, then let them. “Some animals are more used to noise than others, but some get really scared, anxious and attempt to escape,” she says.

She suggests to close the curtains and stay with the pets. “Don't lock them in the house and think they'll be fine and go out. They need comfort by their owners,” she said.

Dr le Roux-Pullen suggests that pet owners should microchip their cats and dogs, which would make them finding their home again much easier if they should run away.

According to the driver he left Otjiwarongo in the morning and was supposed to deliver the load at the Walvis Bay harbour, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

While the trailer landed on its side, spilling the charcoal on the sidewalk, the truck remained standing and showed only minor damage.

Nobody was hurt.

The fairly new roundabout at the entrance of Swakopmund is notorious for similar accidents.

Currently traffic is diverted through the new industrial area as a second roundabout at the turn-off at the airport is being constructed.

The Erongo RED Rural and Peri-Urban Electrification Project was launched on Wednesday, 8 June.

The purpose of the event was to launch the electrification of 601 households in Okombahe, Omatjete, Otjohorongo, Tubusis and Anichab. This is part of Erongo RED's drive to bring power to the people.

Walvisbaai loop deur onder reën en wind Floris Steenkamp 'n Toutrekkery tussen donderweer uit die noordweste en die ooswind uit die Namibiese binneland het Maandagnag chaos op Walvisbaai veroorsaak. Ontwortelde bome, waterskade aan geboue en huise, 'n skiboot op die rotse asook oorstroomde strate was Dinsdagoggend die getuies van die onstuimige weer die vorige nag.

Tot soveel as 10 millimeter reën is op die hawedorp en omgewing uitgegiet en rukwinde het tot 37 knope gehaal.

In Narraville het die Liguma-huishouding 'n noue ontkoming gehad toe 'n reuse denneboom omgeval het. Die reuse stam het gelukkig die woning misgeval, maar die fynere bo-takke het op die huis se dak te lande gekom. Nog bome is by drie ander plekke in Walvisbaai ontwortel en die munisipaliteit van Walvisbaai het Dinsdag begin met die massa-opruiming van gebreekte boomtakke en droë palmtakke wat op strate en sypaadjies gestrooi gelê het.

Watermassas het in laerliggende dele van die hawedorp se straatnetwerk gevorm en munisipale werkers het Dinsdag fluks gevorder met die wegpomp van die water. Walvisbaai se watertoevoer moes Dinsdag vir etlike ure opgeskort word, om te verhoed dat rioolwater die massas reënwater in die rioolnetwerk aanvul en die stelsel oorweldig.

Daar word dus nie voorsien dat geldtekorte die regmaakproses gaan kniehalter nie. Dit is hoe 'n amptenaar die saak verduidelik het, toe namib times die onderwerp van die nuutste waterskade aan die straatnetwerk aangeroer het.

By die Husab uraanmyn is werksaamhede Dinsdag vroeg gestaak, want daar was ‘n gevaar van weerlig. Boonop het die Khan Rivier ook in vloed afgekom en toegang tot die myn vir ‘n wyle belemmer.

Challenges affecting rural Development workshop Piquet Jacobs

A five-day workshop reviewing the implementation progress of rural development programmes under the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development for the 2015/2016 financial year, was hosted in Walvis Bay recently.

The workshop, which kicked off on Monday, allows participants to share information on the challenges affecting rural development operations in the country and is set to conclude with the outline of work plans for this current financial year.

Speaking at the official opening of the workshop on Monday, Urban and Rural Development Minister Sophia Shaningwa, “Rural areas and rural development are important for a number of obvious reasons. Rural areas are home to the majority of our population and they hold enormous potential, which if harnessed and exploited can greatly contribute to the realisation of national economic development and poverty eradication in our country. As a country, we cherish our hard-worn peace and recognise, as stated in our Vision 2030, that 'inequality and poverty endangers social harmony, peace and democracy'. In keeping with our resolve to eradicate poverty and under-development in the rural areas, we have adopted and have been implementing several sectoral strategies and intervention measures.

In order to ensure systematic and co-

Final concerts of the Cgals Chamber Choir before the World Choir Games in Russia The Cgals Chamber Choir will give their last two concerts before travelling to the 9th World Choir Games in Sochi, Russia on Friday 24 June 2016 at 18h30 (tickets N$100) and Sunday 26 June 2016 at 15h30 (tickets N$60). Tickets are available at Namib i (tel 404827).

This will be the second time that the Cgals Chamber Choir will participate at the World Choir Games. In Riga, Latvia, in 2014 th at the 8 World Choir Games the Cgals obtained four silver diplomas in the Open Choir Competition.

The World Choir Games is an international choir contest taking place every two years on different continents.

The idea to create an event like the World Choir Games is based on the Olympic ideals, which aim to peacefully unify people and nations con-

nected by song in a fair competition.

Unrelated to artistic levels, this approach challenges personality and team spirit likewise.

Music is the common language of the world and serves as a link between cultures and th nations. The 9 World Choir Games will

have nearly 500 choirs with 30 000 participants filling Sochi, Russia, from 6 – 16 July 2016.

Apart from entering for three competitions at this prestigious event, the Cgals were invited by the artistic committee to perform at the Summer Theatre on th July 13 with a few other selected choirs from all over the world.

The Cgals will also once again represent Namibia at the Parade of Nations and as part of a mass choir of 40 International choirs at the Closing Ceremony of the World Choir Games.

These two concerts in Swakopmund are indeed musical highlights of the year and are not to be missed.

Over the years numerous students of Wilna Liebenberg have passed Grade 8 in Singing, Classical Guitar, Piano, Ensemble and Flute; and the ATCL and LTLC diplomas in Singing.

The Cgals Chamber Choir forms part of Wilna Music School and has a programme of 45 minutes ready for the World Choir Games, and the audience will, at both concerts, hear some of the other excellent students of Wilna Music who will perform for 20 minutes to show their support of this huge endeavour of the Cgals Chamber Choir.

Dort wird nämlich in vollem Schwung hinter einem kleinen, weißen Tischtennisball hergerannt. Nicht umsonst wird Tischtennis als eine der schnellsten Ballsportarten der Welt bezeichnet.

Muhammad Alis Kämpfe waren noch beeindruckender als sein ganzes Gerede.

Denn das Großmaul boxte einfach unfassbar viel schöner als alle anderen. Man war schon beim Zusehen überfordert – und hingerissen.

Es gab die Mondlan- Muhammad Ali (rechts) in einem Kampf dung, und es gab gegen seinen Landsmann Joe Frazier, 1975.

Muhammad Ali. Das waren in den frühen Siebzigern die beiden einzigen Gründe dafür, als Kind spät fernsehen zu dürfen. So war das jedenfalls bei uns. Wir haben ihn schon dafür geliebt und noch mehr als den Mond. Was Ali angeht, so nannten ihn manche damals noch immer Cassius Clay und ein Großmaul, das allen Ernstes behaupte, der Größte zu sein.

Trotzdem wollte man ihn und nicht seine Kamikaze-Pilot Gegner gewinnen sehen....

Man weiß bis heute Was zählen Schafe, wenn sie einschlafen nicht genau, wie Ali wollen?

Es saß nämlich bewegungslos auf einem Stein, von dem es kaum zu unterscheiden war. Nicht umsonst heißt Trachypetrella (aus dem Griechischen) ,,kurzer, kleiner Felsen”. Das jedenfalls hat mir der an der Kapstädter Universität tätige Entomologe Mike Picker

Diese weibliche, flügellose Kurzfühlerschrecke, ist gerade dabei, mit ihrem Legestachel (Ovipositor) Eier im Sand abzulegen. erzählt.

Der Insektenkundige machte mich außerdem darauf aufmerksam, dass die hervorragende Tarnung der Steinschrecke durch die Anwesenheit einer Schicht feiner Härchen entlang der Beine optimiert wird, die dafür sorgt, dass das Insekt keine Schatten wirft, wenn sie die Beine gegen den Körper faltet. Ist die Natur nicht wundervoll?!

Monthly Monitor: May 2016 Local markets spent May anxiously positioning themselves for a foreign credit rating review coming up at the beginning of June. Whilst global markets were waiting for a US Federal Reserve decision on interest rates reserved for the same time. Weary investor sentiment has fuelled further market volatility.

Market Review: A foreign debt credit rating measures and ranks a country's ability to repay foreign debt timeously. Results can be seen as based on two major categories: investment grade (strong ability to repay external debt) and subinvestment (junk) grade (poor ability to repay external debt, thus larger probabilities of default on foreign loan repayments). There are three independent rating agencies which do this, Standard and Poor's (S&P), Moody's and Fitch. At present, South Africa (SA) is rated one notch above junk status by two of these agencies, and two notches above junk status by the other. In the first two weeks of June, ratings by two of these agencies will be reviewed. This is what everyone is worried about.

Why is SA likely to be downgraded? Slowing GDP growth means lower revenue levels and less capacity to make debt repayments; depreciating SA Rand (ZAR) making it more expensive to pay in foreign currencies; increasing budget and trade account deficits leaving less allocation to external debt repayments; government policy instability and uncertainty reduces confidence by foreign investors leading to less capital inflows.

What happens if SA is downgraded? It becomes more expensive to repay foreign debt; further ZAR depreciation will add to the expense; foreign investors may become weary of investing in SA assets (especially government bonds) because of the higher perceived risk. A vicious cycle may begin as the SA government has to borrow more (at a higher cost) in order to pay off debt. An increase in borrowing costs will not only affect the SA government, but also private corporates and individuals.

What can SA do to avoid a downgrade? If the

SA government can convince rating agencies that fiscal spending is being allocated efficiently and properly managed, that tax revenue is being used sparingly and that economic growth can pick up again, then the country may be able to avoid a downgrade. At this point, whether a downgrade happens in June, or at the end of the year, or even next year, it seems inevitable.

However, it is also important to note that only once all three rating agencies have downgraded SA to junk status will it truly be official.

Moody's is behind in this schedule. Also, it is not impossible for SA to regain investment status once it has been lost. It could just take a long time. SA's local credit rating is still in the clear, meaning that internal borrowing can still be financed sufficiently.

To a large degree, local assets have already priced in the downgrade. Government bond yields have been high for quite some time (above the 9% mark) and the ZAR is already undervalued. This means that once the downgrade happens, there will most likely be an initial shock to the market, seeing asset prices fall for a brief period of time, and then a recovery could be seen. This dip in asset prices can create opportunities for investors.

Over the past few months emerging markets (including SA) and commodity prices experienced a rally. This was more because of global developments rather than local improvements in underlying fundamentals.

This is evident in the year-to-date performances in the table below. However, when looking at the 1-year performances, the picture darkens significantly.

New Subaru WRX STI Time Attack Car shatters lap record at Subaru announced that a Subaru Isle Of Man TT Course WRX STI Time Attack car piloted by Mark Higgins set a new lap record of the fabled 37-mile Isle of Man TT Road Course with an average lap speed of 128.73 mph and a time of 17.35. This breaks the previous record held by Higgins of 116.47 mph and a time of 19.26.

The all-new 2016 Subaru WRX STI time attack car is a joint development of Subaru of America, Inc., and Prodrive, with technical assistance provided by Subaru Tecnica International (STI). The new car is purpose-built for the Isle of Man TT Course.

"It was an amazing run today considering we were running in very hot conditions and the tarmac was quite soft. With lower temperatures we would be making more horsepower, so I still believe we have more left in terms of speed, but it is great to have another record in the bank," said Mark Higgins. "The chassis on this new car is fantastic to drive. It makes a difference driving a car custom designed for this course. It really allowed me to pick up time in each sector in the more technical parts of the course."

For the 2016 car, Subaru decided to create a purpose- built car that could tackle the arduous TT Course, which is similar in style to both the NĂźrburgring and Le Mans in the demands it puts on suspension and engines. It called upon the joint expertise of Prodrive for the design and build, and Subaru Tecnica International for technical assistance. Both have an extensive history in building and designing winning cars. Prodrive and Subaru have won three World Rally Championship Manufacturer titles together and three World Rally Championship driver titles. Prodrive also has experience running team Aston Martin in the FIA World Endurance Championship and Le Mans 24-Hour race. STI has experience designing great road course cars, designing the back-to-back class-winner at the 2015 and 2016 NĂźrburgring 24-Hour Races.

HILUX TOPS THE SALES CHARTS IN MAY Toyota's "tougher-er" Hilux is riding high on the news that the latest version has once again topped the sales charts in May. A market-leading tally of 3 185 Hilux units helped Toyota retain its number one status with an overall sales volume just shy of 10 000 units (9 642) for the fifth consecutive month this year.

This puts Toyota 44,5 per cent or 2 964 units ahead of its nearest competitor in the retail race.

It also means that Toyota currently enjoys a market share of 22,5 per cent - a record high for this year.

Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Toyota South Africa Motors, provides some interesting insights on this month's results: "Taking a closer look at the Hilux numbers reveals that 90 per cent of the sales, which equates to 3200 units, is via the dealer channel; once again reinforcing just how popular this vehicle is with private buyers.

"I'm also happy to report that South Africa's love affair with the Fortuner is stronger than ever.

In its first full month on the market, this all-new model notched up an incredible 1 333 sales. It's a fairly even spread across all the variants but noteworthy is the uptick in demand for the 2.4 GD-6 4x2 models; indicative of the growing popularity of Fortuner amongst trendy city dwellers."

Hamman also predicts that hybrid sales will gain traction, albeit off a low base, due to the recent sharp rise in fuel prices.

FEI World Dressage Challenge On Saturday, 4 June 2016, the Walvis Bay Equestrian Centre hosted the annual FEI World Dressage Challenge. The format had changed this year and instead of only competing against 4 or 5 countries, our Namibian riders now competed for world- wide recognition. The standard of the competition had also been raised tremendously, which meant that only a few riders dared to attempt to ride these challenging tests.

The judges for this years' FEI Dressage Challenge were Mrs Lesley Mawhinney from South Africa and Mrs Brigitte Davidow from Namibia. The general feeling amongst the riders was that they judged strict, but fair and that they received positive, constructive criticism which they could learn from for next year.

The show started with Franziska Leinberger on Camelot in the Prix St Georges test. These difficult tests are very seldom ridden in Namibia and it was a great honour to have Franziska here in Walvis Bay. Unfortunately Camelot was having a bit of a bad day, and Franziska retired during the competition. For our young and upcoming riders, this was however a real spectacle, as they don't get to see that sort of dressage live very often.

Franziska still rode an even tougher test later during the day, which drew a number of spectators to the arena.

The Namibian Team consisted of four riders with their horses, namely: Nadine Flemming on Seeis Eymet competing in the Elementary Class Karin Schommarz on Frischgewaagd Saltano competing in the Elementary Class Anike Maritz on Baron von Sphinxblick competing in the Elementary Class Gesche Gilchrist on Seeis Dansuelo competing in the Medium Class All four riders did well and received good scores by the judges. We now need to wait until all other countries have finished their competitions to see where the Namibian team, as well as the individual riders will stand at the end.

Hulle beskik oor ‘n fris pak voorspelers en n blitsige agterlyn. Kudus se sterkpunt die jaar is hul voorspelers en n interessante stryd word voorlangs verwag. Namibia and Malawi in goalless draw Namibia and Malawi played to a goalless draw in their friendly encounter at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Wednesday night.

The two nations used the friendly match as preparation for the Council of Southern African Football Association (Cosafa) Cup set for Windhoek from 11 to 25 June. Namibia is the defending champion and will play its first match of the competition against Botswana on 18 June.

Malawi, who are in Group B will play Angola in their opening group game of the competition. On Wednesday at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, Namibia dominated the game in the opening minutes as they kept ball possession, but all that changed as the game progressed. Malawi started having more of the ball, despite Namibia threatening the opposition's goal side on numerous occasions. The half time score was 0-0. In the second half, the Namibian side made two changes - bringing on Deon Hotto and Roger Katjiteo in their search for goals. Their effort proved fruitless as the Malawian outfit continued were they left off at half-time as they dominated play in the opening minutes of the second half. Malawi's dominance was cut short with 15 minutes to go into the game as the Brave Warriors took control of the game. With only four minutes remaining in the game Hellings Mhango of Malawi received a red card after a dangerous tackle on Ferdinand Karongee. Coach Ricardo Mannetti was happy with his team's performance and he said he now knows where to improve ahead of Cosafa.

“Today's game was a really good friendly match. It was a typical low tempo training match which did not have character to set the stadium alight, but I am happy that some of the players that I gave a chance to prove themselves did very well which is a good thing for the team,” he said.

Malawi coach Ernest Mtawali added that the game was tough for his team but it helped them figure out what to change ahead of their clash with Angola.

Namibia will travel to Zambia on Friday were they will play their last warm up match ahead of their Cosafa Cup clash with Botswana at the Sam Nujoma stadium in the quarter-finals of the competition.

nbc Director Launches COSAFA and EURO 2016 Broadcast Windhoek; Namibia. The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (nbc) Director General, Stanley Benjamin Similo has officially launched the Council of Southern African Football Association, COSAFA Castle Cup Competition coverage and the EURO 2016 broadcast on nbc in Windhoek last night.

Introducing his team of experts tasked with the noble task of broadcasting the games for the coming one month, Similo promised a world class production of the event taking place locally. He said the nbc will proudly live up to the expectations to bring all the local games to every household in Southern Africa. Similo announced that with the EURO 2016 competition running live mainly on nbc3, other games' highlights and repeats will be broadcast on nbc1. The nbc DG said this is done to cater for the areas that do not receive nbc3, especially those areas whose transmitters are not upgraded to digital television format. “It's no secret that Namibia will host this prestigious event for yet another time, which signal will be carried by the nbc for the first time around the world. We stand to demonstrate to every person on the globe, that as a country and an African State, we have matured. We are ready to show to the world that as a broadcaster, irrespective of the size of our operations, we can deliver the best quality event to the viewers and audience out there and we shall do it and even surpass the expectations,” added the nbc Director General.

The Namibian national broadcaster will broadcast 21 matches live, with the exception of two final group matches that will be played simultaneously on the 15th and 16th of June 2016. Only one of those two final group games will be broadcast live at a time on the set days. The broadcaster's Editor in Chief used the occasion to invite various institutions and companies wishing to market their products and services through the nbc, to make use of the special packages designed for the purpose during that period.

Similo stated that the broadcaster will have more than 2000 minutes of intense football coverage on both radio and television, which creates an opportunity for companies to market their products and services.

He said the nbc has what it takes in terms of the broadcast network, broadcast capacity and space on all its platforms, that will benefit institutions wishing to tap in. “Partner with us, as a trusted broadcaster who promises only the best with our lucrative special marketing and sales rates on both radio and television. I personally invite you to tap in this benefit,” added Similo.

Similo said the nbc has undertaken to treat the nation to a full month of the best of football from the continent and abroad. In the same vein, the nbc DG apologized for the disturbance in the normal scheduling and broadcast that is necessitated by the need to adjust the schedules, in order to accommodate the two competitions on both nbc radio and television.

The nbc DG has promised nonetheless that the adjustments and disturbance of the schedules will be kept to the barest minimum.

Before launching the football festivity on nbc1 and 3, the Editor in Chief of the corporation has promised more from his office in future. He said his office is busy putting everything together to deliver the best to the nation. (Fixtures on page 31)
