“Chinese uranium-monopoly” Mineworkers Union concerned - Sale of Rio Tinto would mean China owns 90 % of all uranium mining activity in Namibia Sharlien Tjambari The Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) expressed concern this week over the sale of Rio Tinto Rössing's share in Rössing Uranium to China National Uranium Corporation (CNUC). Should the sale pass the last hurdle (approval by the Competitions Commission of Namibia) it would practically mean Chinese entities owns a combined 90 % of shares in all of Namibia's uranium mines. MUN representatives hosted a press conference in Windhoek this week where the concern was raised. All branches of MUN countrywide attended the press conference.

Grant Noble and Azhar Dinath fail in bid for bail in High Court The two Walvis Bay residents linked to the biggest cocaine bust in Namibia’s history, failed on Tuesday in their High Court attempt to be freed on bail. The Walvis Bay magistrate’s court refused Grant Noble (with beard) and Azhar Dinath bail on 11 September last year. The duo appealed against this ruling in the Windhoek High Court. On Tuesday the High Court upheld this ruling of the Walvis Bay magistrates court. The visibly disappointed Nobel and Dinath will now continue to spend their days in custody in Walvis Bay, as investigators puzzle together how and by whom 412 kilograms of cocaine were smuggled in a shipping container from Brazil, via Cape Town to Walvis Bay. Walvis Bay schools grief with High School Driehoek The International School of Walvis Bay and Private High School Walvis Bay count among Namibian schools who this week united in grief following the deadly disaster in South Africa last Friday when a concrete slab of a walkway collapsed at the High School Driehoek in Vanderbijl Park, killing five children. The International School designed a memorial wreath on which the school’s learners and teachers expressed their condolences to those who died and those whose lives are directly touched by the tragedy. Walvis Bay Private High School learners are wearing a yellow ribbon for the duration of the week to remember those who died in the tragedy. It is believed one of the pupils who died would have represented High School Driehoek later this year at the Walvis Bay Private High Schools annual Desert Sport Festival. The concrete slab forms part of corridor that connects two buildings of the school. It collapsed on Friday as learners were using the corridor after assembly to go to their classes. Jandré Steyn, Roydon Olckersk and Marli Currie were killed instantly as the slab came crashing down. A fourth learner, Marnus Nagel, died on Sunday. ·A memorial service was held in Vanderbijl for Steyn yesterday.

The container arrived in Walvis Bay aboard the container vessel Amanda D in the first week of June last year. At the time there were suspicions that the container might have drugs hidden inside among the ordinary cargo which comprised a consignment of photocopy paper. The container was kept under surveillance and when Nobel and Azhar arrived to clear the container they were detained. The drugs were discovered hidden among the consignment of photo copy paper. The cocaine has a street value of more than N$200 million. Police investigators are working closely with other agencies, including in Brazil to uncover the full picture. More suspects might be linked to the drugs.

Final hour for the Namibian wild horse Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) to either manage the hyenas or grant the Foundation custodianship to move the horses to a safer home, the Ministry released a statement in December 2018 that they would relocate the hyenas. Namibia welcomed the good news. The Ministry acknowledged the value of the Namib population for tourism and as a national heritage, and affirmed that it would ensure its survival. Their attempts to bait the hyenas proved unsuccessful and they made plans to return at the beginning of the year. A month has since lapsed with no action and the hyenas are again voraciously predating on the wild horses. All the foals born in the last few months, except for one, have been killed. The idyllic happy scene on the Garub plains has been reversed as it reverts to being a battleground where the only victims are the horses. A few of the Namib mares are still expecting. They are the very last hope. We are now in the final hour of the wild horses' existence on the planet. Without the chance for new life, the population is doomed. The last foal remains on the desert plains and any day could be its last, ending the hope of a new generation.

On the Garub plains of south-western Namibia, home to the Namib wild horses, horses play, gallop across the desert and seek out grazing as they have done for the last hundred years. But all is not as it seems. The population of Namibs is on the brink of extinction and the situation is once again critical. Since 2012 when a pack of Spotted Hyenas moved into the area and began preying on the horses, the population has plummeted from 286 to a mere 79 horses. In 2013 alone, the hyenas killed a hundred horses, fifty of them foals. Not one foal has survived over the last five years, making the youngest horse seven years old. There was brief respite towards the end of last year. Rains had blessed the desert in May, breaking the long drought, a carpet of grass covered the desert floor and the hyenas moved off to adjacent land. The horses gained condition and the first foals were born. New life once again graced the Namib Desert. Hope shimmered on the desert floor like gold, and it appeared that the Namibs had a chance. It wasn't to last long, however. The hyenas returned to Garub and the brief glimmer of hope was soon extinguished. After several years of the Namibia Wild Horses Foundation appealing to the

Walvis Bay Port Users Association - the voice of an industry Walvis Bay Corridor Group Established in 1994, with the idea to create a unified body to encourage and facilitate trade through the port, the Walvis Bay Port Users Association (WBPUA) has since become one of the major associations in logistics and supply chain. WBPUA forms the operational part of WBCG as it represents all entities associated with cargo, freight and shipping activities in the Port of Walvis Bay. The Association encompasses the majority of companies who are involved in stevedoring, clearing and forwarding, road transportation, bulk handling, cold storage, ship's agency and export industries. The Association Chairperson, Pilar Veiga, stresses that WBPUA takes their role as the voice of the industry very

seriously. “Through conveying all industry concerns to Government, the Port, the Walvis Bay Corridor Group and other relevant SOEs, we are convinced that WBPUA is raising the standards of the industry. It further ensures fairness, by protecting the smaller companies from being victimised as the WBPUA acts on behalf of its members”, Veiga explains. The Association represents the members in negotiations with the Port Authority, Government and Private Sector bodies to ensure that the rights of members are maintained and

enhanced. Members meet regularly to discuss matters of mutual interest and determine the industry response to certain concerns. A benefit of the WBPUA is the accumulated wealth of knowledge and experience to facilitate trade on the corridors. Veiga states that through working together to improve the competitiveness of the Walvis Bay port, the Association is contributing to improved efficiencies on the route. “We deal with and influence vessel turnaround times, cargo release efficiency, labour capacity, safety and secu-

rity, technical expertise, immigration and customs.” The Association recently welcomed the Confederation of the Namibian Fishing Associations to the team, “We now also represent the fishing industry, which has increased the percentage of users we now represent. In Namibia where Chinese nationals and Chinese companies work also de-escalated operations for the duration of the New Years celebrations, also known as the Spring Festival. These projects include major road building projects between Henties Bay and Swakopmund, behind the dune belt on the MR44 between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, the container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay and the liquid bulk fuel terminal north of Walvis Bay near Bird Rock. With a population of nearly 1,4 billion, and many Chinese living abroad, the Chinese New Year is celebrated by an estimated 20 % of the world. The annual Spring Festival is the single biggest annual migration when Chinese people undertake travels to their ancestral homes. On mainland China people undertake several billion car rides, bus rides, train rides and flights to reach their traditional homes where they honour ancestors and pray to gods for prosperity. We took a quick search online and uncovered these interesting facts on the subject of the annual Chinese New Year. 1. The Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. Although it is still very cold in China, the holiday marks the end of the coldest days of winter.

2. There's no set date for Chinese New Year. The Chinese New Year ranges from January 21 to February 20. This year it occurred on February 5th. 3. The festivities also represents the most fireworks set off at the same time worldwide. It even surpasses fireworks during the Gregorian or Western New Year. There are some 500 cities in China though that prohibit the use of fireworks in the interest of air pollution. Fireworks form part of the celebrations be-yond New Year too. Often several weeks. 4. On that night too families burn fake paper money and printed gold bars. It is to honour family members who departed this life. Offerings bring good fortunes to the departed souls. 5. It is the longest Chinese holiday. It can be as long as forty days. 6. Chinese New Year also boosts the Chinese economy. People spend twice as much during this period as for examples Americans would spend during Thanksgiving. 7. Showstopper too. The large majority of stores are closed during this period and several Asian stock exchanges also close down for a number of days. 8. No showering, sweeping or throwing out garbage allowed. Showering isn't allowed New Year's Day. Sweeping and throwing out garbage isn't allowed before the 5th. This is to make sure you don't wash away the good luck! However, there is a day before the Spring Festival dedicated to cleaning. This day is to sweep the bad luck away and make room for the good. 9. Children receive envelopes of “lucky� money.

South African dies at Walvis Bay airport An elderly man who arrived on a flight from Cape Town at Walvis Bay was discovered in an unresponsive condition in a public toilet cubicle at the Walvis Bay Airport on Sunday. He was rushed to the Welwitschia Private Hospital where he was declared dead. A police report from the Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, confirms the man is a South African national and arrived on a flight of Air Namibia from Cape Town at 11:20 on Sunday. The man was identified as Hilton Claude Vernon Mackrill (70). He was planning to visit friends in Walvis Bay, but fate determined otherwise. A post mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of death. The Police is not suspecting any foul play. More learners at Flamingo Primary Rudi Bowe

With the influx of people to the urban areas learner enrollment increases annually a need for adequate educational infrastructure is needed to create a conductive learning and teaching environment. Flamingo Primary School (FPS) felt the influx in 2016 as there was a shortage of classrooms at the school and forced the school to start with Platoon school system where grade 1 and grade 2 learners will share the 7 grade one classroom at the school. This new system at the school has forced all the grade two learners to go to school from 12:00 to 17:00 during the day. Parents of the Flamingo community were not happy with this as they were put in to dilemma as they did not know what to do with their kids from the time they go to work. Two years ago a group of parents decided that they will not sit and wait for the Government to build the classrooms at the school and in conjunction with the school management and board they started with fundraising to build the seven classrooms at the school. With the little money that was raised and small contribution from some of the parents and a contribution of Fifty Thousand Namibian Dollars each from the Erongo Harambee Trust and the MERLUS Seafood Processors in Walvis Bay respectively the school management started with the building of the classrooms. The Principal of Flamingo Primary School Ms Damens said “The classrooms will assist us greatly in accommodating our learners'. We as the Flamingo Primary community would like to thank the Erongo Harambee Trust, MERLUS Seafood Processors in Walvis Bay. KSC, the parents and the community that contributed to the construction of the classrooms at the school” the Principal added.

Ms Damens mentioned that they would love to move in to the classrooms still this year and therefore plea to the parents of Flamingo Primary School, the business fraternity and other organisations in Walvis Bay and the whole country to help with the completion of the classrooms. “To complete the classrooms we still need material for the roof, windows, flooring and paint as well as funds to pay the building contractor” Damens added. The Kuisebmond Social Club (KSC) has heard the plea of the school and In line with their objectives resolved to assist the Flamingo Primary School that is in the process of constructing additional classrooms for the increasing number of their students by donating (40) 50kg bags of cement. The Chairman of the Kuisebmund Social Club Dankie Hipundjua said at the handover of the cement that “It is an honor for us the Kuisebmund Social Club to be part of a school of this magnitude therefore as part of our Social Responsibility we have chosen to donate (40) 50kg bags of cement to help in your ongoing project of constructing additional classrooms and it is our wish to see the completion of this noble project”. Hipundjua further mentioned that “Children and the youth are the future of this nation and Education is the key in today's world and thus we have a social responsibility towards our communities and schools. Hipundjua and the KSC encourage the business fraternity and other organisations to follow suit. As the Government cannot do it alone but if we can join hands in helping our schools, communities and the country at large.

During the 2018 examination, the IEB candidates (out of 249 private schools, 12 372 candidates in total from Namibia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa) achieved 98.92% pass rate compared to the previous year's pass rate of 98.76%. 88.5% of 2018's IEB candidates qualified for further degree studies. The IEB is an independent Southern African assessment body that sets examinations in English and Afrikaans in the National Senior Certificate (Gr 12) examination. This exam is internationally recognized and students who performed well in this exam in the past have been admitted to excellent tertiary institutions such as Oxford (UK), Cambridge (UK), Harvard (USA), Princeton (USA), etc. without having to meet additional requirements such as an entrance examination.

He served the Topnaar Community and the Nama People with distinction and we highly appreciated the contributions made by Late Chief Seth Kooitjie. Bank Windhoek recommits to Namibian Hockey Bank Windhoek recently announced its sponsorship of the Namibian Hockey Union (NHU) last for the fourth consecutive year.

Wilna Bredenhann regains the Hollard Insurance Ladies Coastal Open at the Rossmund Golf Course for the 13th year in succession. A record field of 38 ladies from Omeya, Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay, and Rossmund entered for the 13th Ladies Coastal Open sponsored by Hollard Insurance. The tournament was an official event on the NALGU calendar with additional incentive of Merit List Points on offer. The tournament was also the First Qualifier for the 2019 Windhoek Lager (Green Jacket) Tournament. Play commenced on Saturday morning between ten and eleven – weather conditions were good. It was overcast with a slight breeze coming in from the north. Temperatures rised later in the day. The course was well prepared and the greens were in excellent condition – running fast and firm. Adri Pienaar and Wilna Bredenhann posted first round scores of 84 gross whilst defending champion Wilma van der Merwe could only produce a 90 gross. In the “B” Division Rina Knight was in the lead with a 90 gross four shots ahead of nearest rival Ruanda De Beer – whilst Tiekie De Wet had her nose in front with 33pts giving her a one shot lead over junior golfer Maryke Neethling in the Stableford Division. Overcast and chilly was the order of the day on Sunday however conditions soon warmed up with a promise of some wind when the players reached the back nine - as usual Diffie had everything under control and was there on the course to provide the players with a well needed drink and an extra treat on Number 12. Wilna took the bit between her teeth as she is known to do and posted a well played 82 gross giving her the title with seven clear shots. In true Hollard fashion the players were spoilt with lots of surprises both on and off the course not to mention the wonderful prizes on

The tournament was rounded off with a fantastic prize-giving function which included lunch and some information from NALGU President Brenda Lens. The announcement comes as a record number of teams entered for this year's packed indoor hockey season. The Bank Windhoek Indoor League will start on the weekend of 9 and 10 February at the DTS Indoor Hall. “For the first time we have established the Bank Windhoek Reserve Premier League for Men and Women which is the second strongest tier league in indoor hockey in Namibia, and is especially created for those clubs who want to earn promotion in the future to play in the Bank Windhoek Premier League. All clubs from Windhoek, Walvis Bay, and Swakopmund have entered 62 teams, up from 54 teams last year, who will compete in five different leagues. There will be approximately 600 players involved in indoor hockey over the next three months,” said the President of the NHU, Marc Nel. Speaking at the announcement of Bank Windhoek's recommitment to the sports code, Jacquiline Pack, its Executive Officer for Marketing and Corporate Communication Services said, “2018 was an excellent year for Namibian hockey, particularly on the international stage. Celebrating hockey at such a level starts with recognising the sport at grassroots; being able to spot talent and skills at an early age and nurturing these so that individuals and teams can shine.” “As with everything in life, constant practice and commitment to any sport to refine one's skills plays an important part in making dreams come true. Anyone who represented Namibia internationally last year will tell you that his or her success did not happen overnight. Coastal Anglers at World Angling Games Rudi Bowe

About 20 anglers from the coast is part of the Namibian team that will represent the country at six different angling codes at the Fishing World Championships (SFWC) in South Africa from today 8 February to Friday 15 February.

More than 7 000 anglers and officials from all over the World are expected to descend upon South Africa for the games that will be hosted at 19 different venues all over the South African coast with a total of 13 different world titles up for grabs. Namibia will compete in five categories, namely artificial lure angling, bass angling and species angling, as well as two exhibition events, namely freshwater bank

Dulux paints better ball The past weekend saw 44 players turn out for the first of two qualifying rounds for the Dulux paints Better ball Stableford competition where the top teams from both rounds will compete at Omeya later in the year for big prizes. Johan le riche [kanna] was at the club on the day to hand out the club prizes and it was Sergio Figuerero and Willie Venter winning the day with a solid 47 points. Second place went to Wouter van Wijk and Kurt Brits on 45 points and third Amandio Sardinha and Johnny Borges on 44 points. Simon Celliers won nearest the pin on the 18th. Darryl won the draw last week so it is back to 1 000 this week. The Sages competition on Sunday was well supported and at the AGM held afterwards, Carlos de Gouveia was elected as new captain of the ever increasing number of over 50's and ou toppie Frans Grobler will be the second in charge. Thanks to Jerry for the many years of looking after our sages and for sorting out the samoosas and kususters. This weekend is the first of a number of monthly medals scheduled for 2019. This year jointly sponsored by PISCES (JJ Fourie) and FOX DESIGNS. The list is on the board. On 16 Feb is our annual Club Fundraiser. The format is Better ball Stableford with a bit of a twist - 4 holes can be discarded, 7 better ball holes and 7 holes with two scores to count. You need to decide after each hole which option you are going to take. The list is on the board so get your names on soonest and entry is 1 000 per team, which is not too much more than what you would pay for a normal round on a Saturday. We are trying to get prizes for all team so if you can sponsor a prize or two please contact me. They don't have to be big prizes. The past weekend saw Dulux Paints as sponsor of for the first of two Betterball Stableford qualifiers at club level Johan le Riche. Overall winning teams from all Clubs will later in the year compete in a final at Omeya. The overall value of the Dulux nationwide sponsorship is around N$200 000. We had our committee meeting this week and there were a few points which need to be pointed out 路 There will a bar price increase from 1 march following increases from the suppliers. We did not increase last year and we can't pass this year. 路 We have an incident book at the bar and if you as a member note anything or you are unhappy with something please note it in the book. We can't get things sorted if we don't know of them 路 The ATM has become an issue and with immediate effect we are terminating the contract with the suppliers, so sorry, no more atm. 路 We have continued to have issues with water and water pressure hence the greens taking a bit of a beating. Added to this the mowers have also given problems. We are attending to both issues as best we can so we can only ask for patience while we sort these issues out.
