White mussel to become a quota species Floris Steenkamp “You can prepare yourself. White mussel will become a quota species in the Namibian fishing industry”. With these words Mr. Jose Luis Fernandez, the sole proprietor of Fermar Seafood CC, yesterday showed documented proof that he was already awarded an exploratory right to harvest clams (which include white mussel) by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in November 2017. Fermar’s Mr Jose Luis Fernandez admitted yesterday that his business exports to Asia as many as 5 tons of white mussel per month. He refuted claims though that he is paid US$6 per kilogram. Fernandez is adamant there is a lucrative empowerment opportunity in clam/mussel harvesting and that it can be sustainable.

Ammonium Nitrate Continued from page 1 Allegations were made that the company only has warehouse storage space available to the tune of 1 520 tons, and that the rest of the product would have to be stored in the open, covered by plastic. “We placed a lot of planning into this project and I can assure the Walvis Bay public that no ammonium nitrate would be stored in the open”, the business development manager of Crossroads Distribution, Ockert Maritz said yesterday. Maritz explained as the product is discharged in the port of Walvis Bay it is hauled to the storage area of Native Storage near the Walvis Bay Airport. Trucks destined for Zambia would be loading the ammonium nitrate as it comes in from port and therefore an adequate flow would be achieved that would prevent the company from running out of warehouse storage capacity.

Namibia, and in particular Walvis Bay, reached a major milestone in its quest to become the preferred hub of import and exports in Southern Africa, with the port of Walvis Bay as the pivotal point. President Hage Geingob inaugurated the Namibia Port Authority's new container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay during a ceremony attended by close to 2 000 people. The new container terminal, 40 hectares in size, was completed at a price tag of N$4,2 billion by China Harbour Engineering Company in a construction project spanning with a few months just over five years. Capital for this project was partly funded by Namport from its own resource and from funding by the African Development Bank. The container handling capacity of the port can now double to 750 000 tons per annum, as the terminal is equipped with four ship-to-shore cranes and an additional 600 metres of quay space added to the port of Walvis Bay. In his keynote address at the opening President Geingob said Namibia is now well on its way to become an international logistics hub. The port of Walvis Bay's increased cargo handling capacity and efficiency, coupled with various transport corridors linking Walvis Bay with major trade centres in all of her five neighbouring countries and the Democratic Republic of Congo is a competitive combination. Especially to the landlocked neighbours like Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia which needs access to ports in order to trade with overseas markets. The completion of the project which used landreclamation as a major segment now places Namibia in the ranks of countries like Dubai, the Netherlands, Australia and Brazil which utilises land reclamation on a massive scale, added President Geingob. The container terminal, which starts operations later this month, is a major leap towards reaching the country's 2030 development goals. The President expressed his satisfaction with the fact the project also includes a passenger liner berth and a yacht marina. Essential infrastructure to grow tourism. President Geingob urged the various stakeholders to now use this opportunity of the completion of the passenger liner terminal and marina to speed-up the development of the Walvis Bay Waterfront. The Vice President of CHEC, Li Yi, in his addressed thanked Namibia for the opportunity the Company had for this project and added
some 2 000 Namibian jobs were created, training was offered to 800 individuals and local procurement added to the local economy. The African Development Bank's Deputy Direcor General, Josephine Ngure, in her statement said the completion of the terminal will add greatly to making landlocked countries in SADC open to the global blue economy. The Chinese Ambassador to Namibia, Zhang Yiming, said the completed container terminal is set to work hand in hand with China's proposed Belt and Road Initiative.
Namport Director, Nangula Hamunyela said the terminal increases Namport's assets to N$7,6 billion and is certain to strengthen the company's goal to become a logistics hub for the Southern African Region as a whole. Before the actual commissioning of the new terminal, Port Engineer Elzevir Gelderbloem confirmed the port would shut down between 17 to 23 August for the migration of all containers and other relevant equipment to the new container terminal. On 24 August the container terminal officially starts operating.

The official opening on Friday of the new container terminal on reclaimed land in the port of Walvis Bay saw to an unexpected bonus. The two main stakeholders in this massive construction undertaking, The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) do-nated a total of N$2 million to the National Emergency Disaster Fund. The m o n e y i s e a rmarked solely for drought aid. The Acting chief executive officer of Namport, Kavin Harry, and the Vice president of CHEC, Li Yi, each handed their N$1 million ceremonial cheques to President Hage Geingob on Friday at the launch ceremony of the new container terminal. Harry explained Namport sourced the funds from the Namport Social Investment Fund. President Geingob welcomed the donations and re-iterated every person in Namibia should join hands and pull in the same direction to counter the drought that has virtually every part of the country in its ugly grip. The President called on other companies in Namibia to follow the example set by Namport and CHEC.

Following two stakeholder meetings the Ministry of Environment and Tourism has circulated a Draft Management Plan (DMP) to stakeholders for the future management of the Garub Horses. Namibia Wild Horses Foundation (NWHF) has given feedback on the draft plan and await the Ministry's final decision regarding the action plan for the Garub Horses. NWHF has also offered the Ministry assistance with the development of the Action Plan. In summary: The Garub horses are, and will remain, the property of the state in other words they are a State asset and are managed by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. The Ministery of Environment and Tourism has formally recognised the tourism and ecological value of the Garub horses. The Garub area of the Namib Naukluft Park a n d Ts a u / / K h a e b (Sperrgebiet) National Park is to be re-zoned as a multi-use area for more effective management. The current situation at Garub The grass has been refreshed following the recent rain in the area resulting in an improvement in the condition of the Garub Horses. Currently there are 72 horses comprising 31
mares, 40 stallions and 1 filly. While evidence of hyena activity remains in the area, predation on the horses has not occurred since February 2019. Several mares are currently pregnant and expected to foal from late September/early October until February 2020 with most arriving during December 2019. Hopefully this will coincide with the summer rainfall cycle which will
stimulate new grass. While it has been made clear the state will not relinquish custodianship of the horses, Namibia Wild Horse Foundation welcomes the actions the Ministry of Environment and Tourism has taken in drawing up an action plan for the Garub Horses as crisis management decisions have proven to be detrimental to other species, especially the resident hyena.
The pledges consist of N$3 billion for Namwater to develop water projects, N$2.5 billion for Nampower, for electricity generation and transmission, and N$2.5 billion pledged to TransNamib for acquisition of rolling stock, railway network upgrades and to operationalize its new business plan which focuses on rail transport. The announcements and pledges were made by DBN CEO, Martin Inkumbi, and DBSA Head of SADC Client Coverage, Davies Pwele. Talking about the nature of the pledges, Martin Inkumbi stated that they are commitments to provide finance, but he qualified his statement by saying that provision of finance was subject to suitable projects that satisfied the due diligence of both the Banks. DBN and DBSA engaged with project promoters prior to the Growth Summit to gauge their medium-term financial capital requirements, Inkumbi went on to explain. He added that the Banks were expecting to provide some finance under the pledges in the third and fourth quarters of 2019, but that final fulfilment of the pledges could materialise over the medium term, depending on ongoing negotiations with promoters and project implementation timelines. Talking about DBSA's priority in making the pledges, Davies Pwele said that DBSA supports regional development and integration strategies, aimed at facilitating trade in Africa by investing in infrastructure projects in Africa. In collaboration with national and regional development finance institutions, DBSA identifies and co-finances
projects that have synergistic economic development impacts for the SADC region and Africa. DBN and DBSA have a long-standing relationship that is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding. The Memorandum enables both Banks to jointly participate in the financing of infrastructure projects in Namibia, Pwele explained. On the topic of collaborative finance with other entities, Inkumbi said a key objective of the DBN, is to mobilise financial capital, locally, regionally and internationally and to channel such capital into infrastructure and industrial projects in Namibia. In line with that objective, DBN collaborates with regional and international development finance institutions in pursuit of mutually beneficial local economic development. DBSA has long been a highly valued counterpart of DBN, providing technical assistance and augmenting DBN's financing capacity to bring projects to fruition, he added. Asked about DBN's own capacity for finance, Inkumbi said that subject to the quality of its loan book, the Bank projects financing capacity of N$1 billion per year for the coming four years. The cumulative N$4 billion projection includes DBN's participation in servicing the Growth Summit pledges. During the same event, the project promoters for the Ongos township development, just north of Windhoek, announced an agreement with DBN in terms of which the Bank will provide N$400 million in finance for the project.

SPS receives netball balls and bibs
All age groups who received the balls and bibs gathered for a photo opportunity with Ms Martha Noabes coach for U/7/8, Mrs. Rudolphine Subes, the coach for U/9 and 11-14 and Ms Guriras coach for U/10, Mr Mbarema a teacher at the school, the Principal Mr Ernst Tjomuinjo and FNB staff members Julian Doyle, Rongi Tom and Rebecca Roelf Sharlien Tjambari
The First National Bank (FNB) in Swakopmund put a smile on the faces of the netball girls from Swakopmund Primary School (SPS) last week when they donated a number of netball balls and bibs towards the netball teams. The team received six netball balls and bibs for the U/7, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13 respectively, from the FNB staff members on Friday 12 July at the netball court of their school. According to Mrs. Subes, the Coach for U/9, 11, 12, 13 and 14, the U/13 girls recently took first place in the Netball League under the Swakopmund Pool and will be competing against two schools from Walvis Bay and Pro-Ed Academy in the finals this week Wednesday, 17 July from 14:00 at the Walvis Bay Primary School netball courts. “I am very excited that my team made it to the finals this year. This is the first time
after so many years to reach the finals. My girls made me and the school proud and they are the strongest team I have”, said Subes. The U/13 team which will represent the Swakopmund Pool consist of Grace Tuahepa-Goal Attack, Zoë Blaauw-Goal Shooter, Letishea Beukes- Wing Attack, Bree-Ann Nell-Centre, and Candle Bam Wing Defence, Queen Ngoana is the Goal Keeper and the Goal Defence is Jasmine Izaks. “We are very thankful to FNB to have donated this items to our netball team and we look forward to more sponsors because out teams do not have an attire. This donation came just at the right time”, Subes added.
Freddie Fouche and Colin Peake returned earlier this week from Botswana where they competed in the annual Peter Richards International Lawn Bowls Pairs Tournament. They ended in third position. This Pairs tournament is held every year in Francistown and is hosted by the Francistown Bowls Club. “We could not have asked for more from the hosts. They really made us feel at home and provided us with great food,” commented Freddie. Seven teams entered the Men's section, namely Botswana A, Botswana B, Botswana C, Botswana D, Zimbabwe A, Zimbabwe B and Namibia. The Ladies' section comprised six teams. Namibia did not field a Ladies' team this year. This Tournament is used by the Namibia Bowling Association as a platform for the development of up and coming bowlers. This year was no exception, as Freddie Fouche and Colin Peake are two bowlers who show a great deal of promise. “The tournament was great and is great to participate in The competition is strong and is used for development,” commented Freddie. About the competition itself he said: “The greens were playable but some rinks had their challenges.” Colin Peake has been playing bowls since the age of twelve. He grew up in a bowls environment as both his father and brother are avid bowlers. Cricket is Peake's main sport, but he makes time for bowls whenever he can. He commented that it was his second time playing in the Peter Richards tournament. “Last time we ended second. This time third. The tournament was well run and very enjoyable.” Namibia had a bye in the first round and played Zimbabwe A in the second round. They were, unfortunately beaten 18-12. In the third round, they fared much better by beating Zimbabwe B 17-12. In round 4, they were again successful by beating Botswana B 16-13, but crashed out in the third round when Botswana C defeated them 33-10. Undeterred, they fought back in round 6 and narrowly defeated Botswana D by 17 shots to 16. The pair ended their tournament on a high note beating Botswana A by 28 shots to 18. The final standings were as follows: Zimbabwe A 15 +25; Botswana D 12 +23; Namibia 12 -10; Botswana B 9 +28; Botswana A 9 -7; Botswana C 3 -11 and Zimbabwe B 3 -48. Devon and Judy wins coastal club titles Contributed
The SFC Squash club's annual championship last Friday yielded new winners in both the men's and women's categories. Enthusiastic players entered both divisions in which Jacques Steenkamp and Lientjie Koekemoer, the 2018 title winners, were both unable to play this year due to personal reasons. The predictions were that the squash family of Devon and Judy Savage would be hard to beat and that is what happened. Devon and Judy recently joined the SFC club from South Africa where they compete successfully in the larger tournaments. Devon is a full-time squash coach who focuses his attention on developing future talent. Devon met the high expectations as he reached the men's final and beat Wilco Aschenborn
with three sets against one. Wynand Labuschagné won the play for third place against Arno Kok. In the women's finals, Judy Savage won the SFC Club Championship, with Tessa Rossouw as runner-up and Charné Fourie in third place. The organizers thank Visions Consulting for its sponsorship of the prizes, as well as SFC's squash committee that hosted such a memorable tournament. Squash players are now looking forward to the "064 Cup", the annual derby for the coastal region between SFC and Buccaneers squash club in October, as well as the Coastal Open in November.

Frans you are a star and a very active behind the scenes member of the club. Divots & Pitch Marks – we have noted that lots of these little devils are appearing
all over the course especially on the tee boxes – we remind each and everyone to please carry sand and to fix them as you see them not only when you make one. Caddies – several members are using caddies without making the N$10 donation to the Caddy Master – he is trying
his best to keep control - which benefits all the members. Please remember that Caddies who participate in Corporate Days are to play from an 8 Handicap or less – this is a Rossmund Club ruling. Coming up: Wednesday 7 August will be sponsored by I Tyre.

Skeleton Bay Officially Back and Heavier than Ever Contributed
International tube hounds Koa Brett Barley, Oliver Kurtz and Cory Lopez visited Walvis Bay last week and made most of the excellent surfing conditions at Skeleton Bay. Among the locals Skeleton Bay is known as Donkey Bay and offers high adrenalin surf waves during winter months when the seas are naturally high and windy conditions creating perfect wave conditions. With peak intensity and large and long-lived 40-45-knot winds with pockets hitting 50 knots and seas of 35 feet has developed in the South Central Atlantic and slowly slid east under South Africa. Surf-line videographer Travis Kuhlman joined a trio of East Coast Pros - on a strike mission to Skeleton Bay, Namibia with arguably the longest, fastest left-hand barrel on Earth. “Namibia is such a trippy place, but it's a lot easier than people might think. Once you're there, it's really convenient, with lot of sick rental properties being built. But while access is easy, the wave at Skeleton Bay is anything but. It looks so easy in the footage: just stick the drop, arm bar the barrel and chill. But it's a lot harder than that” says Kuhlman. Once the swell peaked on Tuesday, July 30th, any concerns about the bank being imperfect were dismissed. You could still look from the top of the point to the bottom, and vice versa, and it was clearly as straight as ever. International surfers like Koa Smith, Benji Brand and Brett Barley were mixing it up with newcomers like William Aliotti and many more — making impossibly long tubes from start to finish, confirming that Skeleton Bay is officially back, and still the best and heaviest wave on Earth. “I've waited a long time to come back, and watched many swell maps during that time. I'm glad I came for this one. The ocean was alive and the swells was solid and the sets were nonstop. We came. We scored. Mission complete” says Cory Lopez. Oliver Kurtz said“Even if you're in the spot, the sets are so below-sea-level, something as simple as making it to your feet is a huge accomplishment. Brett got held down for 12 seconds on one. Tim Bisso dislocated his shoulder. People were getting dealt with.” Regular footers have their work cut out for them at Skeleton Bay, an unknown Australian first-timer made a case for the unsponsored charger award. The goal was pretty much the same as every other surf trip in the past, to see swell and pull triggers, score waves and get photos and videos and social media content and return home with that maniacal, thousand-yard stare and deal with the residual envy from friends. “Lots of surfers rolling into the coastal town: Koa Smith, Benji Brand, Anthony Walsh, Aritz Aranburu, Will Skudin, Andrew Jacobson, Jake Kelley and some Irish and Spanish pros was recognize,” Kuhlman said. “There were a handful of good barrels made, but conditions were tough. Benji Brand, Anthony Walsh and Koa Smith probably got the best waves of the day, but they weren't connecting all the way through. There seemed to be three different take-offs/barrel sections” Kuhlman added. Brett Barley said “It was really fast and shutting down, and the wind was bad most of the day. It got good in the evening, and a few guys got crazy ones, but only on small sections of the point. Nothing went the whole way. My longest barrel was two seconds”. Taj Burrow finally made the long haul over to Skeleton Bay, and he was utterly blown away. “It's the fastest I've ever gone on my backhand” Burrow said. All Photo's contributed by Alan Van Gysen and Brett Barley.
