Walvis Bay resident aboard floating library Logos Hope Walvis Bay residents looking forward to see the world's largest book fair aboard the ship Logos Hope mid-July have something more to look forward to – being served by Walvis Bay resident Benizo Smith Junior who is already working aboard the ship for his third month.

Benizo (Bennie) Smith is the son of pastor Bennie and Karin Smith of the Walvis Bay Living Water Full Evangelical Church. Benizo Junior is a youth pastor for the past eight years and when his father showed him the brochure of Logos Hope some months ago, he instantly knew that was to be his next calling. He joined the crew of Logos Hope at the beginning of May and along with 400 other volunteers will bring their life changing stories to the people of the coast and wider Namibia when the ship docks in the last days of July.

A statement of Logos Hope reads: “Logos Hope, the world's largest floating book fair, will soon bring its international crew with their life changing stories for the first time to Walvis Bay, Namibia.

More than 200 mourners paid their last respects in the Swakopmund cemetery on Sunday morning to Mr. Hans Jörg Möller, the well-known businessman and aviator who was gunned down and killed in an armed robbery in his Walvis Bay home on 17 June (picture: Möller’s daughters at his casket).

With her two young daughters at her side the late Mr. Möller's wife, Mrs. Carol-Anne Möller bid her husband farewell at the graveside on Sunday shortly after four aeroplanes flew a missing-man formation over the cemetery.

Mrs. Möller was seriously injured in the fatal armed robbery last month when six intruders allegedly mercilessly assaulted and threatened her and the couple's young daughters in their search for cash and other valuables. Mr. Möller who was asleep at the time was woken by the cries and pleads and was shot by one of the intruders who were arrested in the meantime along with four other of his suspected accomplices.

Mr. Möller died trying to protect his family against the intruders whom not only came with evil intentions, but did so cowardly to engage the couple in numbers and armed with at least one firearm.

Emotions were still raw and confused on Sunday as pastor Joachim Rick of the East Side Baptist Church in (Windhoek) addressed funeralgoers in his sermon. He said it is important to name the murder of Mr. Möller as an evil deed carried out by scrupulous men and that it should not be

sugar coated in kind words.

He urged funeralgoers though to refrain from harbouring thoughts of hatred and retaliation, but to embark on the road of forgiveness and prayer, “as Jesus Christ once forgave his murderers in the shadow of death on the cross”.

Pastor Rick insisted Mr. Möller's death cannot be in vain and challenged “something good must come from this tragic incident”. Pastor Rick reiterated that senseless murders and other acts of violence dump Namibians of all walks of life and cultural backgrounds into sorrow and suffering on an almost daily basis. He called for Namibians to leave justice to take its course, live in Christian ways regardless and to leave judgment to God. The picture with this article shows exactly the senselessness of violence – the Möller family left devastated and with loss after the murder of Hans Jörg Möller. Also the senselessness in that Möller's suspected killer, Gottlieb Panduleni's (30) life too is effectively over facing a lengthy prison sentence if convicted along with his accomplices of murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, amongst more charges.

Benizo only heard about Logos Hope three weeks before he joined. “When my father got the brochure about the ship, I knew this was my opportunity.” Working as a youth pastor for 8 years with his family at a local church, Living Water Family, he knew it was time for him to serve with his own passion. This is his first time stepping out of his comfort zone.

Benizo enjoys working in the international environment. “It's amazing to live in a multicultural community. Interacting with different cultures helps me to know myself and find my own identity.” He is excited to see the ship sail into his home town. “Namibia is a land full of potential and I believe Logos Hope's visit can activate the light in Walvis Bay.” Benizo is one of the ship's 400 volunteers who represent over 55 nationalities and have left behind families, jobs, and the security of their homes. The crew offers a unique example of unity in cultural diversity. Some come with qualifications to fill specific roles such as engineering officers, plumbers, carpenters, bookkeepers and cooks among others; many young people, come with no professional qualifications except a willingness to serve. Although they have different backgrounds, the crewmembers agree on a common goal: helping people through social service projects and providing good literature.

MV Logos Hope is operated by GBA Ships e.V., an international, charitable organisation registered in Germany. Since 1970, the organisation has welcomed over 44 million visitors up the gangways in over 150 countries and territories around the world.

Roadworks have commenced in Sam Nujoma Avenue at the Kuisebmond bridge in Walvis Bay recently. The Walvis Bay Municipal Traffic Chief, Eben Platt, cautioned road users yesterday to adhere to road signs and the speed limit in order to ensure both their own safety and of roadworkers at the site.

Sam Nujoma Avenue is a main traffic artery between Walvis Bay town and the suburbs of Kuisebmond and Narraville. Increased traffic flows necessitates the road project to broaden Sam Nujoma Avenue in this area.

Coastal road also upgraded Erwin Leuschner

Both coastal roads between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, namely the B2 highway and the road behind the dunes, will be upgraded to tarred dual-carriageways over the course of the next three years. The ground-breaking ceremony for the first phase of the project, the upgrade of the salt road C28 (MR44) behind the dunes to the tune of N$960 million took place last week (namib times reported).

The infamous “road of death” between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay might very well become a thing of the past. “As Namibia's and neighbouring countries' economic activities continue to grow, this places added pressure on the existing transport infrastructure and systems,” said Alpheus !Naruseb, Minister for Works and Transport, during the official ground-breaking ceremony on Thursday; and added: “Thus, a safe and efficient transport sector will offer various opportunities to strengthen our competitive advantage in the regional area.”

The total cost of the upgrade of both roads being close to 100 kilometres is estimated at N$2 billion. The first phase will focus on the road behind the dunes, which will become a dual-carriageway Mr44. The project begins at the junction of the B2 highway east of Swakopmund, move past the Walvis Bay Airport and will eventually end at the Walvis Bay traffic circle. In addition three “high-standard interchanges” will be constructed, one close to the B2 highway east of Swakopmund, another “massive interchange” close to the Walvis Bay airport and another interchange to serve the mines. This was revealed by Conrad Lutombi, CEO of the Roads Authority during the occasion.

During his brief speech Lutombi announced the construction of two new bridges over the Swakop River without giving more details.

According to !Naruseb the project is solely funded by the Government and the first phase will cost close to N$960 million. He congratulated the successful tenderer UNIK/ THOHI, being a joint venture between a Namibian and Chinese company. “This JV will benefit the Namibian company THOHI in terms of skills transfer, as it will allow the Namibian Contractor and Sub-Contractors to acquire skills from their experienced foreign partner,” he said. In total approximately 600 Namibians will be employed during the construction period of the entire project.

After completion of the upgrade of the road behind the dunes, the second phase of the project will commence and will include the upgrade of the coastal B2 highway to a dual-carriageway. With this project it is Governments' intention to divert all heavy traffic onto the road behind the dunes, while the coastal road will then serve remaining traffic. “I am very concerned about the accidents that occur on our roads. This project will significantly decrease accidents and make life better each day for our countrymen,” !Naruseb added. During his speech the minister reiterated that this project forms part of the recently launched Harambee Prosperity Plan. “Development of transport infrastructure has been prioritised in all National Development Plans (NDPs), but it was only in NDP4

that the goal of becoming a logistics and distribution hub was adopted,” he said. To achieve the ultimate goal of transforming Namibia into the preferred 'Gateway into Southern Africa', significant advances in transport infrastructure need to be made. !Naruseb therefore mentioned current capital projects “that we are busy with”, being the Windhoek - Okahandja road upgrade to a dualcarriageway, the Windhoek - Hosea Kutako Airport Road to a dual carriageway, the Oranje-mund - Rosh Pinah road upgrade to bitumen standard and the upgrade of the Swakopmund - Henties Bay - Uis – Khorixas - Kamanjab road to bitumen standard. !Naruseb's speech received much praise from the attending guests after announcing that

Government will soon com-mence with the upgrading of the Karibib – Usakos - Swakopmund road to a Two-Plus-One cross section road. This stretch of road has in the past few years also received the notorious reputation of being a “road of death” with fatal accidents being reported regularly.

In conclusion !Naruseb called on all Namibian's to be patient during the project duration. He called on countrymen to take ownership and not to “steal traffic signs” and hamper the process.

He also warned the contractor saying that “it is disappointing to see that some contractors don't keep to deadlines and go well beyond the anticipated construction period.” “This should be avoided,” he warned.

Three accidents over the weekend Piquet Jacobs

Accidents remain a serious issue in Walvis Bay, especially on weekends and month end. Drivers seem to disregard their safety and the safety of other road users more and more, with accidents occurring more frequently.

An accident was reported on Friday evening between Afrodite Beach and the Walvis Bay road block involving four vehicles. Apparently two taxis towing each other were struck from behind by two other taxis, all travelling towards Walvis Bay. The cause of the accident remains unclear, but according to an eyewitness account it appears that speed seems to have been a contributing factor involving nine people in total, of which all received medical attention at the scene before being transported to the Walvis Bay State Hospital for further medical attention.

Injuries reported were less serious and minor respectively. Apparently one of the injured were later transferred to Windhoek for specialist care and treatment.

Another accident on Friday evening was reported approximately 20kms from Swakopmund towards Henties Bay. A sedan vehicle apparently lost control on the salt road and overturned numerous times.

Both occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries. The driver received medical attention at the scene before being transported to the Swakopmund Medi-Clinic for further care. It was reported that the second occupant apparently left the scene before the arrival of emergency and essential services to the scene.

Another accident occurred near a local steakhouse in Walvis Bay on Saturday evening, 2 June, when the driver attempted to make a u-turn and drove right into the building of a security company. The driver left the scene of the accident, but was tracked down by Monday morning. The driver may face charges of reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Residents of Ocean View close to Pebble Beach are disgusted with the aftermath of the extravagant auction of the anticipated BeachBreack development which took place on Friday evening.

On Sunday the tent and all equipment were removed – and a lot of rubbish was left behind. “For us staying here this is a kick in the face,” said local resident Schalk Louw to namib times yesterday. He described it as “appalling” that a modern, high-class development is planned on the huge open erf 66 - and after the auction of the properties a huge mess was left behind. When namib times visited the scene yesterday morning a big area was indeed littered with rubbish.

Empty wine and beer bottles were strewn all over, even on the rocks close to the beach, plastic litter was marking the area and carton boxes filled with various types of rubbish were just left behind. More empty wine carton boxes were lying a bit further away.

“I wonder who must pick this mess up,” another resident said who was walking her dogs there. She also voiced her disgust, saying that such a mess does not mark a good start for the development.

The event was organised in order to launch the 'I Care Soup Kitchen' in Swakopmund. Amunyela said that they (her team) are aware that there are some elders who go to bed without any food for dinner and that some don't even have family or financial support, “this is simply a way of saying that we have not forgotten about you and this also answers to the call of our beautiful first lady Mrs Monica Geingos, saying that one helping hand is better than none.

We know that this will not feed the entire nation, but we are sure that this will make a difference and we hope that others will feel the same or even come up with a much better gesture” adds Amunyela.

Amunyela further thanked Namsov Community Trust for their assistance and for contributing towards the success of the campaign. Speaking on behalf of the Mayor of Swakopmund Mrs Pauline Nashilundo, Councillor Assertha Marsh said that the day was held in honour of the senior citizens and people living with disabilities “this special day is to set an example for the other members of the community to learn from this team who saw the need to care for the less fortunate and elders of our town.

To the organisers of this event, thank you for recognising the need by dedicating this day to our elders and I hope that this event will become an annual event in our town and grow bigger and better”.

“I Care strive to help those in need and therefore feel the need to provide for those who struggle within our community,” adds Grace.

The latest in Namibia’s shipping pride, the N$2,3 billion diamond exploration and sampling vessels the MV SS Nujoma, has been handed to its Namibian crew by Kleven Shipyard at Geirangerfjord in Norway on Wednesday. The 113 metres vessel has been outfitted in recent months to be one of the most advanced ships of its type in the word. The vessel is soon to undergo sea trials in Norway before her Namibian crew will deliver her into the hands of her new owner - De Beers Marine Namibia.

Corban returns from New York Piquet Jacobs

After competing in the Regional Science Fair and Nampower National Science Fair in 2015, Corban Le Fleur was chosen to represent Namibia at the Genius Olympiad 2016 held in New York, USA. Corban's project in the Mathematic category, “A Solution to Multiplication”, takes a look at simplifying the multiplication process and finding an easier way to do mathematics.

Corban left for his trip abroad on 11 June and returned on 22 June. The Olympiad schedule made way for an International Fair, a college fair and a planetarium space show in between the judging and interviews. Corban was awarded a certificate for his project. They also visited plenty of tourist attractions such as; Time Square, the Empire State Building, United Nations Building and the famous Carlo's Bakery. Corban had the opportunity to go on a boat trip to Niagara Falls and travel under the Hudson River in the Lincoln Tunnel. “It was fantastic, an amasing experience and I would be grateful to have another opportunity like this one,” commented Corban.

Genius Olympiad promotes a global understanding of environmental issues and the achievement of sustainability through basic science, arts, creative writing, engineering, design, and business development. Genius Olympiad provides challenges and opportunities for secondary school students, to instill in them the skills and knowledge needed to be the citizens, leaders, scientists, artists, writers, engineers, and policy makers of the future agents who will promote and contribute to greater environmental sustainability throughout their lives. This year students from 65 countries and 40 states were hosted.

In total, NBL's DRINKiQ program aimed at contributing to curb the effects of harmful drinking that are seen on a daily basis in society, by educating people on the impact and the harmful and responsible use of alcohol, enriched the knowledge of at least 1200 Namibians over the past 12 months.

Mwiya: “It is not always easy to bring people together for training sessions, which is why 1200 participants are definitely a number worth celebrating. Altogether, since the inception of the DRINKiQ program in 2009, we have reached the 3600 mark. Through DRINKiQ we empower participants to make informed and responsible decisions when consuming alcohol.”

Over the past 12 months participants from all sectors including corporate, the private sector, as well as government institutions attended the DRINKiQ training sessions. Mwiya: “Our objective and future plans for this program is to cover all 14 regions in Namibia and this year marks a step closer to our vision because we went further than the Khomas region and successfully hosted training sessions in the Karas- Erongo- and Otjozondjupa regions as well. Mwiya: Only when people really know what alcohol is, and what the mental, psychological and physical risks are when abusing alcohol, will they be able to make decisions beneficial to the outcome of their alcohol consumption. And that is what the DRINKiQ program provides – it enriches participants with the necessary IQ to help them understand the repercussions of abusing alcohol. At the end of the program, participants have a better understanding of the short- and long-term effects of alcohol abuse and thus empowers them to make smart decisions.”

Commissioner Antoinette Platt from Correctional Services, social worker by profession praised NBL's DRINKiQ program, referring to it as possibly a strong contributor to curbing the abuse of alcohol in

the country. Platt: “In my experience, this is most certainly not one of those programs that make you feel guilty for taking a drink. You are so comfortable, and I appreciate the fact that the abuse of alcohol and alcohol consumption in general is treated and discussed with so much sensitivity by the facilitators of the DRINKiQ program. One of the reasons why many of our employees refuse to attend such sessions, is because they are always made feel so uncomfortable, but with this program they rather feel encouraged and inspired to make better decisions when consuming alcohol. Most of the feedback I got from my employees include the fact that this program is very educational and strengthens knowledge on alcohol and its effects.

Additionally, the DRINKiQ program trains on a very successful three-way learning session. This includes theory which provides facts about alcohol and the effects the excessive use of alcohol has on the body and mind. Then there is the practical demonstration which accommodates those that learn better through practical learnings, and of course there is the role play that caters for the illiterate. This program most definitely has the potential to assist in curbing the abuse of alcohol.”

One of the most recent training sessions took place in Okahandja. Omagano Katanga from the NauAib clinic in this town was one of the participants.

Katanga: “The needed etiquette during the consumption of alcohol was a stand-out for me during the DRINKiQ training session. We, Namibians have a specific way of drinking, mostly focused on getting drunk, but we forget that alcohol can be enjoyed in a responsible manner and for relaxation.

After the training session my view and perception on alcohol and the consumption thereof definitely changed. It opened my eyes to the reality that a change in people's behaviour towards alcohol consumption is critical in curbing the alcoholrelated violence we see today.”

Goju-Kai Namibia Attends Training and Grading in Japan A group of Namibian Goju-Kai senior karate students and instructors recently returned from Tokyo, Japan, after having been invited and taken part in a karate training/grading cultural exchange event with Goju Kai Japan. The group spent 10 days in Japan during early May 2016. This exchange and training event is by invitation only and has become an annual occurrence which gives students of this martial art the opportunity to experience the cultural roots of karate in the place where Goju Kai karate originated.

China Harbour learns the hard way to respect laws Chinese construction company China Harbour & Engineering Company (CHEC) yesterday learnt the hard way not to cut corners when it comes to Namibia's laws. More than fourteen of the company's tipper trucks were suspended from the road yesterday, after these heavy vehicles were found to be unroadworthy and also overloaded.

N$960m dual lane road behind Dune 7 The two main roads between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, the B2 highway and the MR44 behind the dunes, will both be transformed into dual-carriageway highways over the next three years. The groundbreaking ceremony for the N$960 million project was done yesterday by Alpheus !Naruseb, Minister of Works and Transport. “This in only one of the many

Phosphate Mining need our collective support in the creation of employment As a current strategic developments analyst, I followed with keen interest the discussions brought about by the proposed phosphate mining at the coast of Namibia. This new development on the possibility for seawater phosphate mining created a hype of discussions and tug-ofwar between proponents of the phosphate mining, the fishing industry and self-styled critics. It was good that it allowed all sides to express themselves freely on the matter.

The media, especially the print media, was abounding with articles on phosphate mining which left Namibians confused. They could do a good job by either giving the Namibian people a balanced reporting for them to judge. By-and-Large, there were critics or self-styled appointees who went further by criticising the proposed project without informing the masses properly on the advantages and disadvantages of phosphate mining – thereby confusing the masses more. As a person on the other side of the road, I believe that criticisms on any proposed development must be based on an in-depth understanding and reading of scientific analytical reports to have a better understanding on the subject at hand. I firstly took the liberty to acquaint myself with the detailed report on the envisaged phosphate mining in the coastal water of Namibia, and also looked at the pros and cons of the scientific studies and evaluations. I took my reading further by comparing phosphate mining with commercial diamond mining, especially in our coastal waters. It strikes a balance and in both instances studies were carried out to also justify seawater diamond mining. What strikes my mind with regards the phosphate mining are four key components – coexistence of the fishing and phosphate mining; the enormous contribution to Namibia's fiscus (estimated at N$728 million); employment creation (±610 people/Namibians); and minimal impact on the environment. Those to me are the basics for my good judgement. I will back my support as long as the current workforce of over ±14,000 in the fishing industry is not negatively impacted.

The town of Walvis Bay has particularly seen an increased number of unemployed youth, the spiralling illegal housing structures especially in the suburb of Kuisebmond, and an influx of people of all ages seeking employment. All these facets contribute significantly to the pressure placed on infrastructure in the town of Walvis Bay and a burden to the local Town Council. Hence, in order to address these facets we need to embrace local and international investors in addressing social problems and that are in the position to create employment.

Therefore, I wish to categorically state that I am giving support to the proposed phosphate mining, on a trial basis to give them (the proponents and scientists) the benefit of any doubt.

The business has grown in leaps and bounds since then and it growing from strength to strength due in no small part to the unwavering commitment of an owner determined to succeed.

Waterbay Woods originally operated from premises on 2nd Street and it was the owner himself who laboured endlessly for the first few months, with no salary, to build one thousand pallets a month for the one or two clients ready to take the gamble on this start up.

Many who worked in the area at the time will recollect stacks and stacks of wood piled up on the pavements around the business with Fritz Smeer, (one of the owners), working tirelessly building, loading and unloading wood and pallets by hand as funds did not allow for the purchase of a forklift or additional staff members.

Thankfully, at the time, GJE Transport not only offered the services of a forklift to help ease the burden, but assisted the company with transporting their stock from Zambia at a reduced cost and on credit. Having overcome hurdles such as a lack of capital and price wars with established competitors, Waterbay Woods not only succeeded, but is now known as a powerhouse in the pallet manufacturing industry.

In 2010 another boost to the business was the construction of a heat treatment oven which allows for any goods manufactured at Waterbay Woods to be heat treated according to ISPM 15 Standards and be certified through Namchem as fit for export purposes. This is currently the only facility available at the coast for heat treatment.

From those humble beginnings, two staff members were employed and production began to slowly but surely increase, and today, Waterbay Woods is capable of producing upwards of 20 000 pallets in a month, with production in one day equaling that which was produced in a month eight years ago.

In 2012 Pieter Beukes joined Fritz Smeer as co-owner, and the two continued to build the business and branched out in 2014 to begin manufacturing furniture, beginning with dog kennels and table/bench combinations popular with restaurants.

From there, the joinery business began to boom, coinciding with the dramatic increase in the demand for pallet furniture. The joinery makes predominantly custom made furniture, and as our saying goes, "if you can dream it, we can build it".

Today, Waterbay Woods & Joinery cc is a business that is not only known for excellent quality, but top notch customer service as well. Waterbay Woods has established itself as the go-to place for pallets and crates and has reached the top of its field. Waterbay Woods can now proudly proclaim to be the biggest pallet manufacturer in the country, and there seems to be no end in sight for this rags to riches tale that proves hard work does pay off.

International Day; a hit once again Piquet Jacobs Once a year the International School of Walvis Bay hosts an International Day which celebrates the school's diversity, comprising learners from various countries globally. The event was a huge success and was held on Saturday 2 June, at the Jan Wilken fields. Apart from children and parents dressing up in a variety of Namibian and international costumes, 7 different international cuisines were also available at food stalls.

The stalls were appropriately dressed up in international themes like France, Germany, Portugal, Afrikaner, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Namibia. A candy stall was made up by the primary level.

There were many games and activities available for children, as well as live entertainment such as dancing and lip syncing done by students.

Goju-Kai Namibia Attends Training and grading in Japan A group of Namibian Goju-Kai senior karate students and instructors recently returned from Tokyo, Japan after having been invited and taken part in a karate training/grading cultural exchange event with Goju Kai Japan. The group spent 10 days in Japan during early May 2016. This exchange and training event is by invitation only and has become an annual occurrence which gives students of this martial art the opportunity to experience the cultural roots of karate in the place where Goju Kai karate originated.

The Namibian contingent was led by the Chief Instructor of Namibia, Shihan Leonard Martin, who also had the opportunity to grade and attain the very high level of 6th Dan black belt. In addition to this the status of Renshi Shihan was bestowed on him, which puts him into the ranks of the most recognized master karate instructors in the International Karate-Do Goju Kai (IKGA) Association.

Following are all the members of the Namibian contingent with their respective grading achievements: Leonard Martin (Renshi-Shihan - 6th Dan black belt) Dean Theisinger (4th Dan black belt) Llewellyn Manale (4th Dan black belt) Zaid Ely (3rd Dan black belt) Bruno Lourenco (3rd Dan black belt) Katelin Martin (2nd Dan black belt) Angel Zhang (2nd Dan black belt) Brandon-Lee Martin (1st Dan black belt) Nathan Augustus (1st Dan black belt) Rayloon Kuilders (1st Dan black belt) Rasmus Esterhuizen (1st Dan black belt) Westley Izaks (1st Dan black belt) Megan Cupido (1st Dan black belt) It is a highlight for any karate student to be graded by the most senior members in the organization, and to then have the opportunity to train under the watchful eye of the organization's Grand Master. The Grand Master and International head of I.K.G.A. Saiko-Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi heaped praise on many of the group and Shihan Leonard for the very high standard that he observed during their stay in Japan, they were all true ambassadors for karate and Namibia.

Another significant achievement was the successful grading of Katelin Martin and Brandon-Lee Martin, daughter and son of well-known Shihan Leonard Martin. Katelin has also achieved great success in the international tournament arena this year. Sensei's Dean Theisinger and Llewellyn Manale attained the high rank of Yondan (4th Dan black belt), hard earned after their long and dedicated path with Namibia Goju Kai. Zaid Ely and Bruno Lourenco who have also proudly served Namibia Goju Kai for a substantial number of years attained Sandan (3rd Dan black belt) and thereby their international instructor status. Namibia Goju Kai has a long history with Japan with its Founder and President, Renshi Shihan Trevor Norval (6th Dan black belt), during his earlier years in karate having trained under the founder of the style, Kaiso Gogen Yamaguchi. The style of Goju Kai was introduced to Namibia in 1990. Since those humble beginnings, dojos have been established in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay offering traditional karate teachings as well as the latest training in sport karate. Goju Kai Namibia with the dedication of its senior instructors has since produced some highly qualified karate-ka who have proved themselves in the local and international karate arena. Namibia Sports Commission trains new commissioners Sharlien Tjambari

The Namibia Sports Commission had a two day induction training last week in Swakopmund. The main purpose of the induction training was for the newly elected commissioners who will be serving the sport commission for three years, to align their plans and visions with the Namibia Sports Act so that they can act within the frame-work of that Act. During the training the commissioners were told about their functions and what are expected of them as commissioners. The main points on discussions was the National Sports Plan and the Sports Act review. Mr Joel Matheus the Chairperson of Namibia Sports Commission said “It is very important that we as commissioners understand what our functions are as commissioners and what the Act says in terms of moving development agenda of Namibian sport.” According to Matheus, commissioners are entrusted to uphold the law of Namibia in terms of the Sport Act, because as a public enterprise they are entrusted on behalf of the government to run sport administration in the country. Matheus says one of the key points in the sport act is for commissioners, as executive arm of the government to make sure that all the sports in the country are conducted within the framework of the Namibian Sport Act. Matheus further said that is very important for the community to understand the role of the sport commission “because some of the members within the sport facility do not understand the role of the sport commission, it is very important for individuals to understand what the Act is allowing him to do and what not to do, because we have many issues where sport associations or federations do not understand what their responsibilities are in terms of relationship with the sport commission and the Act.” The Namibia Sports Act was establish in 2003 with the Act of Parliament and came into operation in 2005. The Namibia Sports Act have been active since then.

Namibians did well at Oval Racing against South Africa The Big Inter-Oval Race Meeting: South Africa versus Namibia was held on 24 - 25 June, hosted at the Oval Track in Walvis Bay. A well attended event which served for plenty of entertainment. Drivers gave spectators what they came out for during the second two-day dirt oval race. Drivers from South Africa, Otjiwarongo Motor club, Walvis Bay Motor club and Desert Raceway participated in the Southern-Showdown race. The racing was fast and fierce with racing in the different categories, such as Midgets, V8's, 16-valve Hot Rods, quad bikes and 8-valve cars taking part. The National Championship for the racing weekend was won by Walvis Bay's own Allan Martin.
