Swakopmund to get rickshaws Erwin Leuschner Swakopmund might soon get an exciting, new tourism activity to add to the already large array of attractions being offered in town: Tours on a rickshaw. Town Council approved an application by resident Corne du Plessis during its last meeting, who wishes to offer these tours in the town centre and the surrounding areas. The submission by Corne du Plessis was made in February this year. In a letter addressed to the CEO of the Swakopmund municipality he motivates his idea. Rickshaw type vehicles were once common worldwide, but eventually have been replaced by automobiles and other forms of self-propelled transport. “The rickshaw typically has three wheels and (can) be described as a bicycle or tricycle designed for propulsion solely by
means of human power to ferry people on a public road,” it states in the Agenda of the meeting. In his application du Plessis requests Council to operate rickshaw tours in areas such as the aquarium, jetty, museum and naturally the historical buildings that Swakopmund is blessed with. “These (tours) would range from one hour to a half day and full day to allow a variety of different packages to suit all budgets for locals as well as foreign tourists,” he
argues. It is his intention to ideally employ only females, as they are a minority and are often overlooked when it comes to employment opportunities. “The women would be trained and be required to pass a basic exam on the history of Swakopmund buildings and areas of attractions,” he states in his application. The rickshaws themselves he intends to import from Asia. “We would work closely with the Swakopmund traffic depart-

during various shack fires in Mondesa and DRC. Most of the incidents occurred during warm, east wind days. “It is disheartening and distressful that possessions are lost,” the mayor said. According to her such incidents can be controlled if residents pay more attention and ensure that stoves and the like are not left unattended. “We ask the community to be extra cautious and prevent such catastrophic incidents,” she said. Nashilundo thanked the coastal community for the support rendered after the various fires. Various people gathered blankets, food hampers and other items which were donated to the fire victims shortly afterwards. She expressed a word of appreciation to everybody that lent a helping hand.

Walvis Bay welcomes Mrs Universal 2016 An informal welcoming was held for local resident Estrolita Petersen, who arrived in Walvis Bay on Wednesday afternoon bringing home from the United States the title of Mrs Universal 2016. “It was not easy, leaving for the pageants; so far from home and I was very sick, but it was all in all a great experience. I was very surprised when they called my name as the winner, as the other contestants were really amazing,” commented Estrolita. Estrolita also walked away with the Best Fitness, as well as Best Evening Gown titles. As Mrs Universal 2016, Estrolita would like to get involved in community and charity work as soon as possible and encourage residents of Walvis Bay to join her. Judges at the pageant took Estrolita as genuine, humble and honest, which caused her to win. As Estrolita represented Namibia at the Mrs Universal 2016 pageant and won, Namibia is first choice to host the Mrs Universal 2017 pagent, which will bring approxiamately 70 contestants from all around the world to Namibia.

In this regard it is argued that streets should be utilised which have a low traffic volume, like the promenade area. “It is also advisable that the applicant should not operate during peak hours to minimise the risks of accidents and create a safe environment,” it reads in the Agenda.

This was confirmed by Crime Investigations Co-ordinator of the police in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, to namib times. According to Kashuupulwa the incident occurred at about 01:40 at Bangani Street in Tutaleni in the harbour town. The deceased was identified as Matti Matti Kapweya. “There was no suicide note found, but only a message on his cellphone, which states that his wife has accumulated a lot of debt. Racism stains Walvis Bay Oyster Festival Sharlien Tjambari
A businessman of Windhoek said this week he would never attend the Walvis Bay Oyster Festival again and recommend all non-white people from staying away from this event in the future, after two distasteful racial incidents at this festival on Saturday at the Jan Wilken stadium. A group of 24 businesspeople and government officials gathered at the event on Saturday and was left humiliated when a white lady attending to the festival’s bar refused them service based on their non-white skin colour. The men decided to leave the festival by 21:00 after only being there for three hours, after one of the festival-goers also referred to one of the group members as a “kaffir”. We travelled from as far afield as Lüderitz and Windhoek to attend the Oyster Festival, as we are also regularly attending the Lüderitz Crayfish Festival and we thought this event is worth attending,” one of the group’s members explained this week. He declined his name being used in the newspaper as his business has two branches at the coast and he condones all forms of racism and regards people from all ethnic origins as his much valued clients. “We spent a lot of money on accommodation and traveling cost and also spent in excess of N$1000 at the festival. We were treated with courtesy and friendly service at the food stalls where we spent a lot of
money. However, at the bar we were served by a white female who went out of her way to frustrate us and at one stage told us to “fokken” wait,” the man explained. Whites were treated with preference when drink orders were made, according to the man who said the group is willing to back their allegations with statements. At one stage myself wanted to go to toilet. The ablution block is shared with the hall of the Jan Wilken stadium where at the time a wedding reception was in progress. “When I emerged from the toilets a white male said to me: “julle kaffirs kan lekker troues hou” [You kaffirs know how to host a wedding]. “At that stage I decided I am not welcome at this event and we all decided to leave,” the man explained expressing his disappointment in the event and how it is not respecting other cultures. “It is a pity that a few people can make things so distasteful,” the man explained. He vowed never to attend the Walvis Bay Oyster Festival again.” He also intends to contact all sponsors to this event and to warn them against supporting the Oyster Festival [or any other social events] where racial prejudice is allowed.
Government transport for Heroes Day celebrations The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology would like to inform the public that the Heroes day commemoration event will be held at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay on 26 August 2016. The Government will make arrangements to accommodate members of the public in regards to transport, to and from the Kuisebmond Stadium. The pickup points will be communicated to the public in due course. The public is encouraged to attend the event, which is to commemorate the Heroes Day in honour of those who suffered and lost their lives during the liberation struggle.
Organiser Len Nel retaliates with social media attack on newspaper and editor, as well as threatening legal action When contacted for comment about the ownership of the beer tent, Mr Len Nel, the organiser of the Oyster Festival, said the beer tent belonged to Namibia Breweries and asked if the editor of namib times was behind the whole story. Nel has been launching scathing attacks on the newspaper and the newsdesk manager [editor] Floris Steenkamp via social media since Tuesday. Nel is of opinion the Oyster Festival was a huge success and is of further opinion namib times is spoiling that by publishing the bad side of the story and he threatened legal actions against this paper if this paper wrote more bad stories about the festival. Nel made second threats yesterday afternoon to a senior employee of the newspaper threatening legal action and refused to accept that an article published in Tuesday's edition over the filthy state the Jan Wilken stadium was left on Sunday morning was fair, not critical of the oyster festival and in public interest. Further inquiries to the Namibia Breweries spokesperson, Mr Francios Olivier, confirmed the beer tent was indeed sponsored by Namibia Breweries, but everything else in the tent belonged to the Oyster Festival organisers. The racist incident can therefore only be pointed to the festival and not the Brewery. Below: the exact content of a whatsapp Nel sent to the editor Floris Steenkamp on Thursday to attack the newspaper's article of Tuesday. This message too was racially charged and insulting.
Several accidents this week at the coast
Sharlien Tjambari
On Tuesday afternoon on Mandume Ndemufayo Street in Swakopmund, a driver of a Chevrolet pick-up bakkie apparently lost control at a turn and crashed into a wall at Premier Construction. Luckily no injuries were sustained, but the driver left the scene accompanied by Swakopmund Municipal Traffic. Mr Mutinga of the Swakopmund traffic department confirmed the incident and said it was found that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and he was arrested and taken to Mondesa police holding cells that same day. In another incident on the Henties Bay route at Tsavorite turn-off on the outskirts of Swakopmund earlier on Wednesday morning, a municipal Chevrolet pick-up bakkie and a seven seater was involved in an accident. Two people sustained minor injuries only in what could have been a serious crash. According to Mutinga, the two vehicles were following each other, the municipal pick-up bakkie was in front and the seven-seater followed. “The municipal bakkie indicated its intentions to turn to the right onto the road leading to the municipal dumping site when it was struck on the side by the seven seater which was trying to overtake at the time” adds Mutinga. Both vehicles were written off.
Fatal accident The police in the Erongo Region is investigating a case of culpable homicide after a 41 year-old man passed away after a serious car accident on the Uis/Omaruru gravel road on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Lesley Gottlib Boy Taniseb. According to Crime Investigations Co-ordinator of the police in the Erongo Region, Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, the driver of a Suzuki Station Wagon with a Swakopmund registration number was travelling on the road when the driver lost control over the vehicle, resulting in it overturning. “The driver and one passenger sustained serious injuries and were transported to the local clinic where the passenger passed away while receiving treatment,” Kashuupulwa said. The driver was later transferred to Omaruru state hospital for further treatment. The two other passengers sustained slight injuries. “A culpable homicide case has been registered at Uis Police Station for investigation,” Kashuupulwa concluded.

With the month August having arrived, strong southwester winds have accompanied it – and some brave souls have taken out their kitesurfing kits again. On Wednesday this week a couple of kite surfers used the strong wind to surf close to the Tiger Reef Beach Bar. Strong windy conditions usually start in August and continue in September each year. These adrenalin junkies need good wetsuits though to brace the (very) cold Atlantic Ocean. Friday 5 August 2016: High: 03:17 Low: 09:14 High: 15:40 Low: 21:38

Hanspeter Tomschi Drought, yes its a fact. But desalination of seawater??? How does the unparallelled drought affect the sealevel?? Please, someone to explain to me (and perhaps the Prime Minister).
Len Nel Sy naam is Floris Steenkamp. Poepol. Verder was daar net goeie kritiek. Niks. Behalwe om stront te publiseer vir sensasie. Die fees was n groot sukses. Sean Wolf Well done! JJ Fourie Wel gedaan Len. Lisie Köstens Ai, ai mense is tog so onnodig!!!

Swakop Road maintenance questioned Letter to the Editor I applaud the Swakopmund Municipality for several positive things they do for the benefit of the residents. I honestly do. However, I've noted an interesting cycle they use as their road maintenance model. A model unjust and one that needs a lot of adjustments too. Every year the Swakopmund Municipality undertakes to repaint the roadworks on 'chosen' roads, which is fine and expected. The interesting bit is the criteria of how they choose these roads to be not only repainted, but have the speed humps redone as well as the pavement curbs. That's apart from the fact that they contract inexperienced or under qualified companies. Companies that often have to come back several times to fix up pot holes on or around the road/speed hump and ones they probably caused by exhorting uninvited pressure in the structure of the road (inexperience). The criteria is unjust for several reasons. The highlight I suggest is that there are roads in swakopmund that have not been given attention since their initial creation. To make it specific, we can focus on the single entry and single exit road to the DRC suburb (or is it still called a resettlement or settlement.) I drive this road several times on occasion and can state unequivocally that the road has not been given attention since around Nov 2014. That was around the same time I first noticed that they had basically used standard bricks to try and create the contour for the speed hump just as you enter DRC. As my car pulled up onto it (a standard low VW golf, not modded) it felt like I was literally driving up a typical pavement curb, whilst the 10 plus 8 speed humps on Strand street not only always look up to shape, but absolutely do not feel the same sitting in the same car. The one feels like a pavement and the other a speed hump. I've noted how the municipality rushes to paint streets such as Strand street and those around the more affluent areas during the festive season totally disregarding Mondesa and the surrounding area. Speaking to one of the street workers, they mentioned not being supervised when working in the Mondesa area, and laughed when I asked how often they do maintenance to roads in Mondesa. The model seems to be a working impoverishing machine on many dynamics. So there are several questions one would want to ask regarding the model. Which at the above mentioned juvenile assessment point of view, didn't even factor in components such as; quality of paint, trial and monitoring exercise to see the effect of the environmental factors on the longevity of the markings and are the products NSA or SABS approved etc. Its really painful to see the municipality spend money on the wall of shame that blocks out Mondesa from the new industrial park and then simply not have enough spaces around the town for facilities such as enough mobile/fixed kiosk stands. Not to mention attention to the roads around Mondesa and the surrounding suburbs. A group of Swakopmund taxi drivers were so fed up that they decided to task themselves with the job of removing the pot holes at the entrance of DRC. Potholes which they claim are caused by the trucks from companies contracted by NHE and companies that are building the mass housing behind DRC. The road through DRC is the only way for the trucks to enter and exit. You would think such facilities are the municipalities' responsibility to make sure the requirements/infrastructure needed by contracted companies don't over-shadow their responsibility to the residents' daily infrastructure requirement needs (such as; a road not being full of potholes for a year, and as the wear con-tinuing to disseminate the municipality does nothing) The City of Cape Town launched an investigation into the 24m Rands it spent on its 2014/2015 financial year for road and line markings. After noticing that some of the road and line markings across the city fade faster in some areas than in others. As such, they appointed a SABS personal to investigate; quality of paint, different application techniques and other likely reasons such as environment and traffic volume. So whilst I salute Swakopmund Municipality, the industrial dirt for economics is still visible. R.B

Round Table Walvis Bay gives back to the community During the annual Round Table Winter Knights campaign, Walvis Bay Round Table No. 36 was fortunate to raise N$151 660 in money, blankets and foodstuffs.
Over the weekend of the 9th and 22nd of July 2016 we gave back to our community. In total we distributed 932 blankets, clothes and food hampers. The value distributed amounted to N$145 000.00. We assisted those less fortunate in our community, incluing welfare centres, shelters, churches, soup kitchens, old age homes, day care centres and preprimary schools. We also assisted the large tented camp community in Kuisebmond. It was heart breaking to see how many people in Walvis Bay struggle during Winter time simply to get warm. A blanket, warm jacket or food hamper goes such a long way and the appreciation shown by the community for our efforts makes this a worthwhile project and our time as Tablers well spent. Once again a huge thank you to each and every one that took the time to make a donation. By contributing to this project, you too did your part in keeping our community warm this Winter.

Johanniter verabschieden Schwester Teresa
Schwester Teresa...
Locker vom Hocker

Es wäre ohne Musik also sehr einsam in unserem Haus. 6.

Toyota's the only manufacturer to get double-digit sales Buyers snapped up 3 153 new Hiluxes in July, making it SA's favourite vehicle and eclipsing its nearest bakkie competitor by more than 840 sales. This helped lift Toyota's new vehicle sales to 10 224, or 3 410 deliveries clear of the second-placed motor manufacturer. This equates to an overall market share of 22,7 per cent. As Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Toyota SA Motors points out, “what's even more enlightening is that 23 per cent of all dealer sales for the month can be attributed to a Toyota, Lexus or Hino franchise, which effectively means that every fourth vehicle sold via the total dealer channel, is one of ours.” "The fact that Toyota was the only manufacturer able to breach the 10 000 sales threshold for the
month, is testament to the confidence buyers have in our brands. In these highly uncertain times, people buy what they know and trust and Toyota offers that and much more. "That said, the 17 per cent decline in the new car market remains a concern for the motor industry as a whole,” concludes Hamman. In addition to Hilux, Toyota also led several other individual market segments in July with Fortuner
which once again posted an unassailable sales total of 1418 units, Quantum (1435) and RAV4 with 441, while Corolla and Corolla Quest are way out in front in the C segment with sales of 484 and 670 units respectively. Additional notable Toyota volumes came from RAV4 (441), Avanza (357) and the evergreen LandCruiser
Pick-up, which garnered 343 sales. On the Hino front, the 300 was again the shining star for the commercial brand in July, achieving 25% market share in the MCV segment. Hino 500 was likewise able to increase its share to 18 per cent in the HCV segment, an improvement of more than 1 percent over June 2016.

In loving memory of
Cedric Elmer 06/08/2016 Miller To lose someone we loved so much brings pain beyond belief! There are no words to ease our pain, our sadness and our grief. We feel we’ve lost someone so close, so wonderful and dear. We think about your special ways and wish that you were near. But although you left this world a year ago you’ll stay within our hearts guiding like an angel. Even though we are apart for love is everlasting and so are our memories. Your legacy that’s always there to light the way for us.

PSG HOST GOLF DAY
Morne Roux and Johnny Borges romp home
The first grading of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was held at The NAMIBIAN MMA & KICKBOXING ACADEMY by Rodrigo Vital on the 28th of July 2016. Three students, Delano Müller 12, Nicolas Simoes 8 & Rafael Lima 8 of the junior class received their first grade in their white belts, after being submitted to a rigorous test/exam. It was a huge first step in Namibia in this sport. There are also exciting plans for development in this sport. Since March the NAMIBIAN MMA & KICKBOXING ACADEMY, in association with the TEAM SYLVIO BEHRING of BJJ have started a partnership to introduce BJJ in Walvis Bay. These classes consist of BJJ and Self Defense. The Progressive System in Jiu-Jitsu, developed by the BEHRING TEAMS around the world, is highly accepted by the students of the Namibian MMA & Kickboxing Academy. The classes are every Monday and Wednesday and can be attended by everyone and of all ages, even ones who don't intend to compete at competitions, but are looking for fitness and confidence in their personal life. At the end of this year, Master Sylvio Behring will be in Walvis Bay to conduct the grading of the students and will be offering a seminar about Techniques in Self Defense and BJJ, which will be open for everyone. The NAMIBIAN MMA & KICKBOXING ACADEMY, with the support of the heads in the sport will offer this sport to everyone and it's a great stepping stone for those want to start in the martial arts.
The PSG golf day held at the Walvis Bay Golf Club last weekend drew an average field of 38 players and the better ball event was won by Morne Roux and Johnny Borges, with Jaans Stander and Piet Fox coming in a close second. All reports from the course reported that it was Morne that played out of his sock on the day and that Johnny only had to help here and there. Well done Morne it is nice to have you back at your best. Third prize was won Wilma VD Merwe and Bertie Coetzee. There were only 2 two clubs on the day and these were recorded by Herman Smidt and Piet Burger. The weekly jackpot of N$500 for 12 or better points on four randomly drawn holes was again not won. Niel Swanepoel and Jo-Marie Steyn represented PSG on the day and Niel played a round with the guys. Thank you for the sponsorship Niel and JoMarie. This coming weekend is the MAGIC DISCOUNTERS [the big yellow building with an aeroplane on the roof] sponsored day and takes the format of a better ball. Herman is on duty, however now that we have the new pro shop up and running all green fees are now paid at the pro shop. This evening at the new time of 18:00 will be the members' draw for all members who have paid their subs. The lucky member who needs to be at the club will walk away with N$500 in bar vouchers. If the draw is not won, it will increase by N$100 and it will increase by N$100 each time not won, with the sky the limit. The last of the old membership format draw for N$500 was not won as neither Wilma, nor Dean nor Linda were at the club, so the N$1 000 which was up for grabs was won by Duane. Also from about 18:00 we will be having a social braai for all members. Braai packs will be available at a nominal cost and wood and salad will be available. Should you wish to bring your own meat, please feel free to do so, so see you at the club from 6ish. The STANDARD BANK MATCH PLAY monthly draw was shared between Piet Fox – N$500,
Bennie Lombard – N$ 300 and Sergio Fig – N$200. To be eligible to win this at the end of next month you need to play three or four games during the month, remembering that you can't play more than four games in any one month. Danie van Antwerpen and Johnny Gorges are the current leaders in the respective sections. The Race to Cape Town is getting close to boiling point and there is any one of 12 players that are in striking distance. Frans Grobler leads the pack on 217 points, while Chris Bothma is second on 190 points. Currently in third place on 185 points is Gunter Heitmann. Game on guys. It is worth remembering that the PISCS Medal carried double points and next week is the PISCS Medal, with Jonas being the committee member on duty. Tomorrow is the SKREEU LEEU breakfast at 08:30. Late entries will be accepted, so come along and watch how rugby should be played and tee off straight after the game. There will be a special draw for those at the breakfast who wear Lions regalia, anything majority red will qualify. For tomorrow and only for tomorrow the LIONS rugby jersey will be acceptable golf attire, no other rugby jersey qualifies, not even jou ou springbok trui, so don't play in another rugby jersey, you will be fined. The Tsumeb Sages takes place on the 12th and 13th. Good luck to those travelling and a safe trip. The programme for the rest of the month is as follows: 13th: PISCS Medal Jonas on duty 20th: Multisave Kurt on duty 27th: Marine Ropes Nardo on duty, also Sperrgebiet Open, also Sanlam Cancer playoffs in Windhoek. Well that is the news for now so see you somewhere over the weekend and remember SKREEU LEEU
Junius officially named Namibia's flag bearer Boxing sensation Jonas Junius has officially been named Namibia's flag bearer for the Olympic Summer Games beginning this Friday in Rio de Janeiro. The honour was handed over to him by the Namibia National Olympic Committee's (NNOC) President, Abner Xoagub, on Tuesday. He will lead a team of ten athletes to the games in Brazil. Junius burst onto the scene in dramatic fashion by clinching the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland's Capital Glasgow after a narrow loss to Josh Taylor in 2014. Ever since then, the 22-year old from Swakopmund has been one of Namibia's most successful athletes, underlining his exceptional quality by securing the second place at the All Africa Games last year in the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) capital Brazzaville. Despite his enormous success over recent years, the reserved boxer has set his sight on the grand prize at this year's Olympic Summer Games, to win the gold medal. To achieve this goal, Junius has been in training for the past four month already, adding swimming training to his boxing routine to be in the best shape possible.
