“Change this business-as-usual attitude” - Minister Kameeta grills Ministerial staff The newly created Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare, which was meant to be a beacon of hope for the poor and destitute, lacks urgency in executing its duties. This is according to the Minister accountable for this Ministry, Bishop Emeritus Zephania Kameeta. Kameeta urged staff of the Ministry to change their “business as usual” attitudes. Minister Kameeta made these remarks during the official opening of the Workshop titled “Development of a Road Map and Implementation Plan for the Blueprint on Wealth Redistribution and Poverty Eradication” in Swakopmund on Wednesday this week. Various stakeholders from various sectors of society attended the workshop which ended yesterday. “While we were supposed to be servants of the people, we have become their masters; plans that should bring changes in the lives of our people are shelved, because the 'master' for example has to go on leave,” Kameeta said. In this regard he highlighted various socio-economic and developmental policies, programmes and initiatives introduced by Government. “Our Vision 2030 and its implementing vehicles, the National Development Plans (NDPs) are well articulated and are admired across the globe. But these plans have not translated into wealth and prosperity for all,” he said. According to Kameeta Government held a national dialogue last year in all 14 Regions of the country, where the people of Namibia had the opportunity to raise various concerns. “The different issues that emanated from the national dialogue forms the basis of the national blueprint,” he explained. The blueprint was presented to the participants of the workshop for further input. “Allow me to highlight one key issue, which was synonymous across all the 14 region: Lack of implementation. In fact, lack of implementation has been identified at different levels - national, regional and international”, Kameeta said. Due to this key concern the Minister called on the participants to come up with concrete and “implementable” poverty eradication actions, based on the concerns of the people that should yield tangible results. “We do not need to reinvent the wheel. We are tasked to ensure that relevant programmes are properly coordinated and synchronised,” he said. According to Kameeta coordination is indispensable and it does not help if every ministry or institution is doing their own thing. It is his hope that at the end of the workshop the resultant implementation plan includes a clear coordination mechanism with the Ministry of Poverty Eradication taking a central coordinating role.

Daar is gistermiddag amptelike bevestiging daarvoor ontvang dat geen nuwe taxitariewe van krag is nie, en die publiek dus moet aandring op die huidige tariewe. Verskeie soortgelyke klagtes is hierdie week deur die namib times ontvang van lede van die publiek wat deur taxibestuurders hieroor geterroriseer word. Taxibestuurders dring aan daarop dat daar op 1 November drastiese verhoogde tariewe in werking getree het. Lede van die publiek weier om hierdie verhoogde tariewe te betaal en dit lei tot konfrontasies wat uitloop op verbale aanvalle en soos in die geval gisteroggend tot fisiese geweld. Die taxibestuurder sou glo ook dreig om die vrou se driejarige dogtertjie aan te rand. Die vrou het die taxi se registrasienommer neergeskryf toe die bestuurder, wat haar aangerand het, wegry. Sy het die saak by die Narraville polisiestasie aangemeld, waarna die taxibestuurder ontbied is. By die polisiestasie is die taxibestuurder oor die sogenaamde “nuwe tariewe” gekonfronteer. 44 year old man hospitalised after beaten with brick and mugged Sharlien Tjambari
A 44 year-old Swakopmund resident was brutally assaulted on Sunday evening by a gang near the Cemetery in Mondesa while he was returning home from a night out. Such attacks have become a concern and a regular occurrence. “I was in bed already when my husband came home at midnight. He was badly wounded and bleeding. He told me he might have had a blackout on the way home, because he left the place where he was a long while ago,” said the wife of the assaulted victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, to namib times. According to her, her husband said he was walking home, when a group of guys wearing masks came from behind, stopped in front of him and hit him with a carry bag one guy was holding. The bag had a brick inside. “He fell, hit his forehead on the ground and blacked out. When he got up, his keys and wallet were gone,” said the wife. He was admitted to the State Hospital in Swakopmund with serious injuries to his head, neck and left jaw. His eye is swollen and very red as a result of the beating. “He is not doing well and keeps on coughing up

The Machine Gun Preacher Sam Childers in Walvis Bay this coming weekend - be there! Sam Childers, a missionary from Southern Sudan or better known as the man who was the inspiration for the movie The Machine Gun Preacher, is in Walvis Bay next week to inspire Christians in their commitment to God and God's Word despite the hardships and brutality of civil war and armed conflicts. ACC nabs “fake”blasters, charges each with fraud Erwin Leuschner Five suspects were arrested by the Swakopmund branch of the AntiCorruption Commission (ACC) this week after they were found to have allegedly falsified Open Pit Blasting Ticket Certificates. A sixth suspect is yet to be arrested and charged. The five suspects appeared in the Regional Court in Swakopmund on Tuesday this week where they were granted bail to the tune of N$10 000 each. They face various counts of fraud as well as multiple counts of contravening the anti-corruption act. The case was postponed to 30 November for further investigations and to offer the accused the opportunity to engage a legal representative. According to a statement by the ACC the case dates back to 2009, when allegations were made that employees from the Karibib Mining Construction Company obtained Open Pit Blasting Ticket Certificates from the Ministry of Mines & Energy – even though they allegedly did not complete the required hours of blasting. The blasting tickets were issued after the Senior Contract Manager Mr Johannes Crawford supplied the Ministry with information that the employees qualified to be tested after completing the required hours for blasting of shifts worked and time sheets. After questioning the accused though it turned out they did not have the required experience. According to the charge sheet Crawford is facing a total of five counts of fraud. The other accused, Jacques Andre Krynauw, Pienaar Majoor, Ephraim Nero Narib and Conrad Brockerhoff, each are charged with one count of fraud. The sixth suspect, which is yet to be arrested, is set to be charged with five counts of fraud. Information received by namib times indicate that the accused are still employed at mines in the Erongo Region. Two suspects hold senior positions at the Husab Uranium mine, while the three other accused work at Karibib Mining Construction Company. “This is a very serious matter as blasting is very dangerous, especially without the required experience,” said Walter Kurz, Chief Investigating Officer at the ACC in Swakopmund.

Having witnessed the atrocities Childers pledged to God he would do whatever it takes to help the people of this war-torn country. He returned to South Sudan with a mobile clinic. Then followed an orphanage that is the biggest in Southern Sudan today as well as other mercy work. His passion to deliver his pledge to God's cause led to Childers leading armed groups in Southern Sudan to rescue children kidnapped and held by the armed group LRA. The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) this week visited various primary schools in the Erongo Region to promote road awareness to youngsters. The “Tangi Tales” road safety primary school regional visit ends today. “Children are at risk of getting injured on the roads, especially in the mornings and afternoon, when they are walking or cycling to and from school,” a statement from the NRSC reads. To raise awareness the council wishes to highlight key areas, so that learners take note of

all other road users, with particular emphasis on pedestrian behaviour and pedestrian rules. “We intend to draw attention to the aspect of road users having to take personal responsibility for their own safety and that of other road users,” the statement reads; and: “A lot has been said about who and what to blame in terms of the main issues besieging the sub-sector but we want all road users to start taking personal responsibility through pledging to.”

“Interesting development” in phosphate saga Erwin Leuschner
The decision by the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta, to set aside the Environmental Clearance Certificate granted to Namibia Marine Phosphate on Wednesday this week, did not come as a surprise. Instead “it is an interesting development,” said Matti Amuka, Chairperson of the Confederation of Namibian Fishing Associations to namib times. Shifeta made the announcement only weeks after initially defending the Environmental Commissioner’s decision when he granted an Environment Clearance to Namibia Marine Phosphate (NMP). The commissioner thereby paved the way for the raw material to be mined from the seabed off the coast off Walvis Bay. “On the basis of Art. 95 (I) and public good, I make the following orders in terms of section 50 (4) of the Act: That the certificate granted to Namibia Marine phosphate on 5 September 2016 by the Commissioner is set aside,” Shifeta announced. He furthermore ordered that the Environmental Commissioner notify the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, the fishing industry and all other interested parties to finalise their inputs in the report within three months and that the whole process of consultation be completed within six months starting from 2 November 2016. “The decision is not really unexpected,” Amukwa said. Even though he described it as favourable, the Confederation is still going to court, having hired prominent lawyer Sisa Namandje. “There are too many unanswered questions. Our papers are still in court, but I do not want to reveal too much now,” he said. Amukwa did state that the Ministry of Environment and Tourism did not do the right thing when it issued the clearance due to these various questions. “Only when the court decides in our favour can we rest,” he said. According to Shifeta he made the decision after an appeal was lodged by an independent community activist. This activist, identified as Michael Gaweseb, made the appeal in terms of the Environmental Management Act. According to the Minister it was not the duty of the Environmental Commissioner, Teofilus Nghitila, to inform the public on his decision when he issued the clearance. The issuance of the Environmental Clearance early in September this year sparked an immense public outcry and also divided various ministries. President Hage Geingob ordered a special cabinet meeting to be held on Monday (7 November) where this issue will be discussed.

Over 30 knives and drugs confiscated on Friday night in Mondesa These items were confiscated last week Friday, 28 October by Nampol in Mondesa, Swakopmund. According to Warrant Officer Shapumba of Nampol the items were confiscated from people on the streets of Mondesa during a random search at both drinking and public places. A total of four cases of possession of drugs

Geingob directs Cabinet to discuss phoshate issue President Hage Geingob has directed a Special Cabinet meeting to take place in less than a week to discuss the ongoing phosphate debate in detail. This was revealed by George Simataa, Secretary to Cabinet, after a discussion on the issue in the National Assembly last week was blocked by Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, resulting in seven opposition members walking out. However, I still have faith that our government experts will give proper guidance on this issue.
I am traveling the coastal road between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund frequently in recent weeks due to a work commitment and find it appalling the level of recklessness exercised by many drivers on this road. Dangerous overtaking and speeding not only put the drivers and passengers of those vehicles in peril, but also those of other road users. I appeal to the traffic police to increase patrols and exercise zero tolerance. We are approaching yet another festive season and it is important that these drivers are disciplined in time in order to save lives. It might also be advisable to start to inspect vehicles, in order to compel vehicle owners to take their vehicle roadworthiness serious to prevent dangers on our roads over the festive season.

Taxi drivers operate NBL National Marketing without licences Manager resigns in wake Erwin Leushner
The traffic department of the Municipality of Swakopmund is concerned about the increasing number of Taxi drivers in town operating without a valid drivers licence or a Professional Authorisation (PA) certificate. This concern voiced traffic Chief Melvin Cloete in an interview with namib times. More than 30 drivers of taxis in Swakopmund were charged over the past weekend – more than half of those were operating the vehicle with neither a driver's licence nor PA certificate. “It is a huge concern for us as this new trend seems to be increasing,” said Cloete. More than ten cases were recorded the weekend before. “There is a tendency by owners of taxis to operate the vehicle until late in the afternoon. Afterwards they give the car to a friend, who continues to pick up clients, although he does not even have a valid driver's licence,” Cloete continued. When a taxi driver is found not to be in possession of a valid licence, traffic officers not only charge the driver, but also the owner,” Cloete continued. While voicing his concerns about this new trend, which was discovered during operations by the traffic department of the past two weekends, Cloete issued a stern warning to Swakopmund taxis, who have not registered. Taxis were called on to register the vehicles since September this year with the official cut-off date being 31 October. “From 1 November onwards all taxis, that have not been registered at the municipality of Swakopmund, will be taken off the road and will have their operation suspended,” Cloete continued. He also urged the public not to make use of any unregistered taxis, stating that they might be busy with criminal activities. “After all, why did they not register when they had the chance? There must be a reason for it,” he said; and added: “No number, no jive.” By introducing the new numbering system the traffic department is now in the position to monitor the amount of taxis operating in town. According to Cloete Swakopmund has the capacity to accommodate a maximum of 400 taxis currently. “When we reach this number we will liaise with the Roads Authority to issue no more permits,” he said. When it comes to the future of taxis in town the scenery will change quite a bit, he continued. This will also apply to taxis from Walvis Bay, ferrying customers to Swakopmund and back. “When a taxi (from Walvis Bay) is found in Swakopmund, the driver needs to show a certificate that he may operate outside the vicinity of the harbour town. If he cannot show such a certificate, he will also be charged,” the traffic chief continued. The same will also apply to so-called seven seaters operating from Walvis Bay. These types of vehicles travelling towards the Windhoek may in future not stop over in Swakopmund and pick up passengers. “They may do so only with a valid road carrier permit,” he said. With this initiative the municipality intends to prevent operators from Walvis Bay to “steal” customers in Swakopmund.

A complaint from outside the company alleged the irregularities. “Following an externally received complaint that alleges irregularities within the NBL Marketing department, an investigation was launched. Subsequently, on 25 October, the NBL National Marketing Manager, Rosemary Shippiki, tendered her resignation, with the
understanding that the investigation would continue,” according to the statement. “Guided by our value, we do the right things right, the O&L group subscribes to rigorous processes & procedures, therefore the appeal is that all parties refrain from judgment on the matter until the process is completed,” urged Locke. NBL Innovation Manager, Rene Duffy, has thus been assigned to act in the position of National Marketing Manager until further notice.

A wonderful initiative by Faith Academy in Kuisebmond, going on the 2 year, is a whole day dedicated to senior citizens and making them feel appreciated where the children of the academy spend quality time with grannies and grandpa's from the community. This project was started last year when the academy discovered that many senior citizens in the community are lonely, while some of the children at the academy never had a chance to see their own grandparents. A project that could only reap benefits to both the elderly and the little ones, as simple interactions can change a senior citizens' day and make a lasting impact on youth. The special event will take place today, at Kuisebmond Community Hall from 11:00. Faith Academy was established in 2013 in Kuisebmond to keep Walvis Bay children off the streets and educated. We accommodate children from various schools in Walvis Bay, including Dolphin, Duneside, Narraville Primary, Kuiseb Primary, Flamingo, Tutaleni, Narra and Immanuel Ruiters, who attend extra classes, leadership seminars and community development trainings amongst others. These are children lacking educational and moral support amongst others, but are now winning many awards at their various schools, especially those used to come with weak results. As part of their leadership training, the children aged 5-15 are involved in various community projects including: Shack fires victims support Providing clothing and food to struggling youth Gowns and transport for those who cannot afford Matric farewells. Luncheons and events for the elderly in Kuisebmond Soliciting the business community to help children with glasses Taking children out on trips to motivate them
Mr Philip Damens, a resident of Swakopmund, warns fellow community members who regularly receive packages and goods via Nampost Courier from abroad, especially from Germany, to carefully examine their package upon receipt as these are sometimes opened and damaged – especially during this time of the year. In an interview with namib times Damens said that he received a damaged parcel from Nampost Courier in Swakopmund recently, but the cashier did not inform him that the parcel was damaged. The cashier also did not show him a letter, that came with the parcel, which indicates that the parcel was damaged. The letter was attached at to bottom of the box. “When I got home I realised that the box was damaged and I only then found the letter. I checked if everything was in the parcel and luckily nothing was missing. When I took it back to ask for an explanation they told me the parcel arrived like that from the head office in Windhoek,” Damens

said. He added that this is not the first time he experienced such an incident. It happened before, especially during this time of the year when Christmas is approaching and many people will receive gifts and parcels from relatives abroad. “In 2013 they (Nampost) opened my par-
cel and stole an iPhone and other valuables, but this time I was lucky that nothing was missing,” Damens said. “I asked Nampost Courier what should I do if items are missing and all they told me was to fill in a claim form and they will pay for damages and loss.” Damens wants to warn fellow residents
of Swakopmund to make sure that packages they receive are the right ones, with all the correct contents and that no goods or items are stolen. “When I received mine, I noticed it was sealed with tape. Just be extra careful because a lot of things disappear during this time of the year,” he concluded.

50 Years loyal service: thank you, Silas! Silas Nakathila started working as cleaner and janitor for the German Kindergarten and Lutheran Church (Walvis Bay) in July 1966. He has served the community loyally for 50 years and many children and their parents have come to know him as the German-speaking handyman on the church grounds. He still recognizes and greets these old acquaintances when meeting them in town while he is doing his rounds on the bicycle. Silas is still very healthy. He says he owes this blessing to abstaining from alcohol. He has five children of which the youngest two are still studying. Sadly his wife Emily passed away a few years ago. FNB Namibia's green building part of PLANET strategy A mere one and a half years ago FNB Namibia was the first company in Namibia to receive the official 4 star “best practice” Green Star SA Certification from the Green Building Council of South Africa for the design phase of the FNB Freedom Plaza building. “Developing and protecting the economy, environment and society is part of our P4 strategy,” says CEO Sarel van Zyl. “At the same time the environment is further encompassed in our pillars of being a responsible business and we have proven this through numerous initiatives such as for example support of Global United and, of course, our biggest investment, namely our green Head Office building on Independence avenue.” Excitement about the @Parkside building is still high at FNB Namibia and employees have settled well into their environmentally friendly atmosphere. “As you might remember numerous aspects have been taken into consideration to make life for our employees as comfortable as possible,” adds Van Zyl and briefly mentions some of the green aspects that make for great office occupancy such as reduced discomfort as a result of glare from natural light due to the glazing selection and the specification of internal blinds, preferential facilitation provi-
ded for more fuel efficient vehicles for occupant commuting as well as provision of occupant and visitor cyclist facilities and heating, cooling and air conditioning system designed to allow vast amounts of fresh outside air into the building in order to reduce the build-up of indoor pollutants. “The fact that we also took our arid conditions into consideration are proving invaluable during the current drought which has hit the country. The combination of water fixtures and fittings, rainwater harvesting, grey water collection and a filtration system has ensured that the building has been designed to surpass the most water efficient benchmark as set by the GBCSA. The design of the irrigation system ensures that there is over 90% reduction in potable water use for irrigation.” When conducting a bit of desk top research, it seems as if South Africa was the pioneer in sub-Saharan Africa in developing green buildings standards while Kenya seems to come second in this respect, and it leads East Africa in the adoption of green building standards. Namibia, however, is not far behind. African developers are increasingly
turning to eco-friendly building practices, which can be seen in hotels, safari lodges, and business parks around the continent. Even though the investment can cost more up front than traditional construction costs, the effort pays off in the end in terms of environmental impact, reduced operating costs, and of course, good publicity. “Buildings are a large contributor of greenhouse gases but have unfortunately received little attention in international global warming protocols and initiatives, which tend to focus on industry and transport. To prevent the worst effects of global climate change and minimise other negative environmental impacts, it is therefore important to address the environmental impacts of buildings. In fact, energy efficiency reductions in the construction and operation of buildings, offers one of the single most significant opportunities to reduce man's impact on
climate change as green buildings can reduce energy and water consumption by up to 70% and cut land use by 25%,” says Van Zyl. He concludes: “We are proud of our building and hope that any new ones in Namibia will follow suit as this will assist our Government in achieving development goals that have been set, such as the National Development Plans (NDP), Vision 2030 and the Harambee Prosperity Plan. It also enforces environmental protocols such as the Paris Agreement on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Pianotainment: Kurt Kusenberg: Die Fliege Nicht verpassen! Sooft der Sultan von Tubodin über etwas nachdenken wollte, ging er in die Grüne Kammer, legte sich auf ein Sofa und schloss die Augen; fast immer kam er dann zu guten Ideen. Allerdings musste es in der Kammer ganz still sein - vor allem durfte dort nie eine Fliege summen, denn dieses Geräusch war dem Sultan verhasst. Der Sklave Maurus, der in seiner Heimat ein guter Baumeister gewesen war, hatte dafür zu sorgen, dass in die Grüne Kammer keine Fliege kam. An dem Tage, von dem hier berichtet wird, ruhte der Sultan in der Grünen Kammer auf dem Sofa und dachte nach. Maurus, der mit seiner Fliegenpatsche bei der Tür stand, war unruhig. Er wusste es nicht gerade, aber er ahnte, er befürchtete, dass irgendwo eine

Der Sultan schlug die Augen auf. „So schlecht", sprach er, „tust du deine Arbeit! Wie soll ich nachdenken, wenn das Zimmer voller Fliegen ist?" „Verzeiht, Herr", antwortete Maurus. „Es ist nur eine einzige Fliege und ich werde sie sofort erlegen." Der Sultan blickte nach einem Tisch aus Jaspis, auf dem allerlei Kostbarkeiten standen. „Dreh die goldene Uhr um! Solange der Sand durch das Glas rieselt, hast du Zeit die Fliege zu töten. Gelingt es dir nicht, stirbst du.“ Es war eine kurze Zeit, die dem Sklaven blieb; in vier Minuten lief der Sand durchs Glas. Mit zitternder Hand drehte
Maurus die Sanduhr um und begann eine Jagd, die keinen Erfolg versprach. In der Grünen Kammer standen so viele Kunstgegenstände, an den Wänden hingen Lampen, Waffen und geschnitzte Figuren: viele sichere Verstecke für die Fliege, weil Maurus nichts beschädigen durfte. Die Fliege flog ans Fenster, zweimal, dreimal und Maurus schlich hinzu. Als sie wieder gegen die Fensterscheibe flog, schlug er nach ihr, doch er traf nicht. Mit wütendem Gesumm flog die Fliege umher. Sie spürte, dass man ihr das Leben nehmen wollte, und sie änderte andauernd ihre Richtung. Maurus behielt sie im Auge, er betete im Stillen, sie möge sich endlich setzen. Es kam ihm
jetzt nicht mehr darauf an, ob er mit seiner Patsche etwas beschädigte; wenn er nur das böse Insekt dabei erschlug. Da setzte sich die Fliege hin und nun war sie außerhalb aller Gefahr. Sie saß auf der rechten Schulter des Sultans. Maurus blickte auf die Sanduhr und sah, dass sie zur Hälfte abgelaufen war. Was sollte er bloß tun? Es war nicht möglich, den Sultan von Tubodin mit der Fliegenklappe zu schlagen, und wer es dennoch tat, musste mit einem qualvollen Tod rechnen. Der Sultan lag mit geschlossenen Augen auf dem Sofa; er tat, als träume er vor sich hin. Er horchte jedoch und genoss die Verzweiflung des Sklaven...

Liebe Küstenleser! Um den eigenen Lebensfrust loszuwerden, wird im südlichen Afrika nicht nur gestreikt, sondern auch materiell und ideell zerstört. Also werden mal eben drei Gebäude an der Rhodes University in Grahamstown an Brand gesteckt, und im vergangenen Jahr haben streikende Studenten die Statue des britischen Unternehmers Cecil John Rhodes an der Cape Town University entfernt - an der Oxford University in Großbritannien will man Rhodes auch loswerden, obwohl er eine Stiftung gründete, die es jährlich 200 Studenten mittels eines Rhodes-Stipendiums ermöglicht, die Universität Oxford zu besuchen. Davon profitieren übrigens auch afrikanische Studenten! Der Proteststurm der ideellen Zerstörung in unserem südlichen Nachbarstaat, der inzwischen auch nach Namibia herübergeweht ist, findet unter dem Slogan ,,Entkolonialisierung der Universitäten” statt, von den Streikenden fälschlicherweise als ,,Decolonization” statt ,,Decolonialization” bezeichnet. Der falsche Begriff erinnert eher an den Darm, der bei mir zumindest abwechselnd unter Verstopfung und Durchfall leidet, wenn ich die Zerstörungswut an den hiesigen Universitäten sehe, die mich irgendwie an die Kulturrevolution unter Mao erinnert, als die Rote Garde u.a. Statuen und Fresken zerschlug, Musikinstrumente und Möbel vernichtete und eine Unzahl kostbarer Bücher verbrannte. Erstaunlich finde ich, dass gerade junge Menschen, die den Kolonialismus gar nicht erlebt haben, die
,,Entkolonialisierung” der Ausbildungsinstitutionen fordern. Tja, und dann ist es natürlich immer einfacher, GEGEN etwas zu sein als gleichzeitig einen konstruktiven Vorschlag zu machen. WIE sollen denn die zukünftigen Universitäten aussehen, zumal es Befürworter der ,,Dekolonialisierung” gibt, die sogar nach der Abschaffung der Naturwissenschaften schreien? Letztere sollten konsequenterweise nie

Early 2017 launch for Mitsubishi Triton SU will prove worth the wait
Mitsubishi Motors has confirmed the local introduction of its all-new Triton SU (Sport Utility) for the start of 2017. Among the array of timely updates, Triton SU will establish a new benchmark in engine performance with Mitsubishi's latestgeneration 2.4-litre 4-cylinder DOHC MIVEC 16-valve turbocharged common rail diesel engine. This powerful new engine features an aluminium cylinder block to save weight and can be paired with Mitsubishi's latest 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic gearbox. This all-new super responsive 2.4-litre engine with a classleading low compression ratio of 15.5:1 is supplemented by a variable geometry turbo charger as well as Mitsubishi's proprietary engine mapping. Peak power outperforms similar sized engines with 133 kW at 3 500 rpm
and 430 Nm at 2 500 rpm, with more than 350 Nm available from 1 500 rpm. This combination provides a substantial improvement in lowend torque of over 25% compared to the previous 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine which was fitted to the outgoing Triton range. "Our new lightweight turbo diesel
engine is fitted with Mitsubishi's latest generation MIVEC technology and weighs 30kg less than its predecessor, resulting in improved responsiveness, fuel consumption, handling, cornering and braking performance," says Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa.
The new MIVEC engine is mated to a choice between the five-speed automatic or six-speed manual gearbox with the option of two- or four-wheel drive available to both. Each gearbox has seen a significant redesign from its predecessor with the manual gearbox now featuring shorter and smoot-
her shifts and the automatic gearbox offering electronic manual shifting. Buyers who opt for the 4x4 drivetrain will get to sample the latest version of Mitsubishi's widely acclaimed Super Select II 4WD system. This stateof-the-art system is unique to Mitsubishi a n d o ff e r s f o u r intelligent driving modes which can be engaged from the electronic driveselector situated inside the cabin. This multifunction setup gives drivers precise control in
challenging weather conditions or on loose surfaces with low-range modes, including a rear difflock, essential for tackling tough and technical off-road obstacles. One of the Triton's popular and versatile modes distributes torque in a 40:60 ratio between front and rear axles via a centre differential which not only makes the Triton SU perform like a true SUV on gravel and wet slippery roads, but dramatically improves cornering performance. The revised distribution delivers greater mechanical durability than the traditional 50:50 configuration used by all other 4x4 competitors. The comprehensively revised suspension contributes to a stable and soothing ride that one would previously associate with a passenger car or SUV. Minimised body roll translates into precise handling and cabin noise is reduced using noise absorbing and damping materials in key areas of the vehicle. Triton's best-in-class turning radius of 5.9
metres compares to the manoeuvrability of midsized sedans. The Triton SU's ergonomically designed cabin combines the interior comfort of a passenger car with the functionality of a multipurpose utility vehicle. The J-line design of the Double Cab results in classleading interior space with plenty of leg and head room while the wider interior angle of the side windows gives additional shoulder space. The Triton SU's Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body construction features high-tensile steel to absorb energy and maintain cabin integrity. Pretensioners tighten the seatbelts in a collision, restraining the occupants and allowing the airbags to work effectively. Active Stability with Traction Control, ABS and Electronic Brake Force Distribution give the driver added control in emergency situations. "International reports have already found the Triton SU to be the most carlike pick-up to drive. Fitted with a new-generation lightweight diesel engine, upgraded suspension and reduced NVH levels, this new sport utility will impress owners with a comfortable ride that hasn't compromised those workhorse principles and multipurpose functionality," says Campbell. T h e Tr i t o n S U replaces the popular Triton range which was locally introduced in 2007. Mitsubishi has sold over four million pick-ups in over 150 countries across the globe. The Triton SU will arrive in Southern African dealerships in February 2017.

Ford Achieves Record Market Share
Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) enjoyed a bumper sales month in October 2016, achieving not only its highest-ever market share in South Africa, but also recording significant gains in year-to-date share and overall sales volumes. Ford notched up its best-ever market share of 16.4% in October, driven by its continued growth in both the passenger and light commercial vehicle segments. In contrast to the general decline in new vehicle sales, Ford sold a total of 7 199 units for the month, some 26% up on September 2016, and 8% higher than October last year. This contributed to Ford's year-to-date share climbing by 4.2%. Among the main highlights for the month, the Ford Ranger powered its way back to the top of the sales charts, while the Fiesta reached a new milestone with its best-ever sales. "We are very encouraged by the growth in our new vehicle sales, which has led to Ford achieving its highest-ever market share in October 2016," said Neale Hill, Director of Marketing, Sales and
Service for Ford Motor Company Sub-Saharan Africa Region. "While the industry continues to register doubledigit declines, Ford is gaining ground in terms of market share and volumes. This is driven by our competitive and extensive product line-up, along with the resilience and dedication of our dealer network," Hill stated. "Generally, it is a very challenging time for the motor industry, with the pressure being felt by consumers and the dealers alike, partly due to the uncertainty on the political front and the impact this has on the South African economy. "Yet our outlook remains positive, and will be bolstered by the introduction this month of the expanded, locally produced Ford Everest range, as
well as the launch of our Ford Options finance plan that gives customers a wide range of choices when it comes to buying and financing a new Ford vehicle," Hill said. Industry *According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), October 2016 aggregate new vehicle sales at 48 745 units registered decline of 5 494 vehicles or a fall of 10.1% compared to the 54 239 vehicles sold in October last year. The consumer-driven new car market continued to experience pressure during October. At 32 738 units, it reflected a decline of 3 438 cars or a fall of 9.5% compared to the 36 176 new cars sold in October last year. Domestic sales of industry new light commercial vehicles, bakkies and
mini buses at 13 559 units reflected a decline of 1 623 units or a fall of 10.7% compared to the 15 182 light commercial vehicles sold during the corresponding month last year. Passenger cars It was a record-breaking month for the Ford Fiesta, which reached 1 856 sales in October. This was up 116 units compared to its previous record set in July 2016. Once again, the Ford EcoSport remained the undisputed leader in the compact sport utility vehicle segment, with 1 012 vehicles sold. Commercial vehicles The Ford Ranger returned to the top step of the podium in October, with its total of 2 964 units securing its status as the best-selling vehicle for the month in the light commercial vehicle sector, and for the overall industry.

The overall best gymnast trophies 2016 for Level 1, Level 5, Level 8, Junior and Senior all came to WBGC! The group routines also managed to take medals as follows: 1. Free Dance Novice group (Annika Silver, Abbygail Uiras, Danine Derks, Kristin Peterson & Naomi Mushi) received overall 3rd place. 2. Free Dance Novice group (Jo-Gea Shatika, Zara Kufuna, Amia Fernandes, Selena de Castro & Sunique Maritz) received overall nd 2 place. 3. Free dance Levels Group (Joy Kabooy, Augustine Evenson, Lia Kufuna, Angela Haikali & Haylee Kauvee) received overall 1st place. The Walvis Bay Gymnastics club would like to thank the WB Municipality and in particular Mr Dampies Mouton, the Sports Coordinator of Walvis Bay, for his help and continued support. Erongo atheletes bring home Sports Awards titles Piquet Jacobs
The winners for the MTC Namibia Sport Awards were announced in Windhoek last Friday evening at the Windhoek Country Club, with athletes from the Erongo region walking away with at least 4 titles. The annual awards ceremony is hosted in glamour to honour the country's best performing sport personalities. Rudolph De Wet Moolman from Swakopmund was awarded the Sportsman of the Year of 2016, walking away with a prize of N$15 000. De Wet Moolman had an oustanding year representing Namibia in the Japan Shotokan Karate Association (JSKA) style over the past year. He was one of the two outstanding performers at the JSKA World Championship. He became the first Karate athlete to win four gold medals at JSKA World Championship, while he also won two silver medals. He also won gold medals at three consecutive JSKA World Championships in 2012, 2014 and 2016. Moolman, in May 2016, was the assistant coach to the Namibia national team which competed in Zimbabwe at the Region 5 Karate Championships.
The Junior Sportsman of the Year for 2016 went to Delano Muller from Walvis Bay, taking home a well deserved prize of N$10 000. Delano Muller excelled in various sport codes over the past year, but his biggest achievement came in kickboxing. Muller at 12 years old, is the youngest black belt kickboxer in Namibia. Muller was awarded with several gold medals in national gymnastics competitions in Namibia. The Dolphin Elementary School learner also competed in swimming and athletics, and broke the 400m and 800m records at the Inter-House Athletics meet in 2016.The Junior Sportswoman of The Year for 2016 was awarded to Mayvonne Black from Swakopmund, also going home with a N$10 000 prize. Mayvonne Swart became a triple world champion at the JSKA Karate World Championships which Namibia hosted at Swakopmund in July 2016. Swart also performed excellently at various karate competitions throughout Namibia over the past year. Competing at the Shotokan Karate Swakopmund Open tournament in April 2016, she took home three gold medals in the 14-year individual category, while also being awarded a gold medal in the team event. Swart again walked away with three gold medals in the 14-year Individual category at the Shotokan Karate Namibia National Championship in Windhoek. In September 2016, at the Namibia Amateur Karate Union National Championship in Windhoek she won a gold medal in the 14-year individual Kata event. Namibia's 2012 Paralympian gold medallist f r o m Wa l v i s B a y, Johanna Benson, took
home the title as Disabled Sportswoman of the Year 2016 and a prize of N$15 000. Although Benson failed to win a medal at this years Paralympics, she reached three finals bettering her personal best times. Benson represented Namibia at the IPC Athletic World Championships in October 2015, where she won a bronze medal in the Women's T37 200m in a season's best time of 29,98 seconds. At the South African SAPD Nedbank Championships in March 2016, Benson won three gold medals in the T37 100m, 200m and 400m. The Team of the year for 2016 went to the Namibia Paralympic 4x100 relay team featuring Andre Oberholster from Walvis Bay. Namibia's Paralympic relay team made history on 19 June when they qualified for the Paralympic Games for the first time. The Namibian team of Johannes Nambala, Ananias Shikongo, Aloysius Martin, Tobias Moses and their guides Even Tjiviju and Andre Oberholster qualified at an international event in Madrid, Spain when they won the relay event in a personal best time of 44,49 seconds which was well within the Olympic qualifying time of 45,00 seconds. The following month the Namibian team participated at an IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Berlin, Germany where they once again took the gold medal in a time of 45,14 seconds. At the Paralympic Games in Rio, the Namibian team came second in their First Round heat in a new African record time of 43,49 seconds - which was one second faster than their previous best time. They qualified for the final but narrowly missed out on a medal when they finished fourth in 43,66 seconds.
