Cash-in-transit robbery Robbers flee scene with N$60k robbed from security company Floris Steenkamp A group of armed robbers carried out a cash-in-transit robbery in Kuisebmond yesterday morning, getting away with approximately N$60 000. A security company arrived at the cash office of Erongo RED in Kuisebmond shortly after day open yesterday morning. The company was transporting cash that had to be delivered to Erongo RED’s customer care office in Nathaniël Maxuilili Avenue. Armed men approached the security vehicle and forced guards to hand over the money. They ran to their getaway vehicle and sped off.

A senior police source yesterday said contrary to rumours no shots were fired during the robbery. Erongo RED was yet to issue a statement on the incident at the time of going to press yesterday. Police investigators were following up leads yesterday that could lead to the arrest of the gang. Weekend accidents - four people evacuated to Windhoek hospitals

Coronavirus outbreak What we can do to stop the virus! A person who was isolated in Swakopmund over the weekend, for fears of the coronavirus, poses no danger. Namibia’s health authority confirmed it. Meanwhile the coronavirus outbreak is steadily getting its foothold globally. The Philipines recorded the first death of the virus outside China. In China, where the epicentre of the disease outbreak was tracked to the city Wuhan now sits with a death toll of 361 people and 17 000 Continues on page 2

Weekend accidents

Continued from page 1

A report by LifeLink states a vehicle overturned in the Möwe Bay area and an air ambulance with medical staff was dispatched to the area to render assistance. Medical personnel were transported from the aircraft to the accident scene by employees of the Shipwreck Lodge which is near Möwe Bay. The entire rescue mission was controlled from the LifeLink 24 digital control center. “After stabilising the patients, one person with significant injuries and the crew were driven back to the air strip and flown directly to Windhoek where two ambulances were waiting and immediately transported the injured to hospital for specialist care”, it says in a statement published on social media. This mission was carried out at the request of the medical aid fund NMC and demonstrates the commitment of this Fund to its members, continues LifeLink. Shipwreck Lodge are thanked for the communication and ground arrangements and so is Tinus Dryer of Namibia Aviation Services, Dr Nyathi, Bay Air and NMC medical fund for the extraordinary and professional handling of this very awkward task. A medical team of the Navachab Gold Mine was scrambled to the scene of an accident on the B2 east of Karibib on Friday night, where a light pick-up slammed into a cow. The animal was crossing the road and the driver failed to spot it in time. The sheer force of the accident collapsed the vehicle's driving compartment and jaws-of-life rescue equipment had to be deployed to extricate the injured driver. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was admitted to the Usakos state hospital – Information by West Coast safety Initiative. In another incident, a man sustained serious injuries late on Sunday night when he lost control of his vehicle a few kilometres from Swakopmund on the B2 in the direction of Arandis. After veering out of control, the vehicle struck a lamp post and overturned. There were passengers in the vehicle who were all only slightly injured. The injured driver was initially admitted to the Swakopmund state hospital but was later evacuated to Windhoek for specialist medical treatment.

Development Bank cautions on 'instant business plans’ The Development Bank has cautioned on 'instant business plans' that are being promoted on various social media for SMEs and skills-based youth finance. Spokesperson for the Bank, Di-Anna Grobler, says the business plan offerings should be viewed with caution by prospective applicants, as the Bank has its own due diligence process in assessing business plans, and 'one-size-fits-all' plans could cost applicants, without any guarantee of a successful application. Grobler counsels potential applicants to develop their own plans and cash flow projections as these will be realistic for the potential applicant. She says the Bank is regularly confronted with business plans and cash flow projections that do not present a realistic business case and cash flow projections for the applicant. In addition, she says that each application is considered on individual merit, and mass produced business plans do not give an adequate portrayal of the case for each enterprise. She adds that the Bank routinely rejects these applications, as they pose a financial risk for the applicant. Grobler goes on to counsel applicants to approach the Bank or visit the Bank's website, www.dbn.com.na, for guidance on applications.

Coronavirus outbreak Continued from page 1 affected. This was the latest figure at the time of going to press yesterday. These figures were expected to rise since. So far Southern Africa has been spared with only five suspected cases in Botswana. The world tries to curb the spread of the virus with actions ranging from isolating cities (China), closing borders (China-Hong Kong), suspending flights to China and temporarily halting visa-upon-arrival for Chinese nationals traveling from China. However, we as ordinary citizens right here at the coast can also do our part to prevent the coronavirus from getting its foothold here: wash your hands regularly during the day; in areas like reception desks frequented by the public, ensure to clean the work surfaces at regular intervals during the day with water and soap. If you sneeze or cough, do so in a hanker chief or tissue. Make sure to regularly replace such hanker chief or tissue. Do not spit in public. Supermarket owners are urged to regularly clean the push handles of shopping trolleys, ensure cashier desks are regularly washed with a detergent. In the event of you not feeling well. Firstly do not panic. It is most likely a bout of flu or a cold. Do take sick leave and consult your doctor. Your doctor will be able to advise you on your medical status in no time. Follow your doctor’s instructions. If heavy sneezing and coughing occurs, take a few days sick leave and ensure to stay indoors and adopt a temporary lifestyle to minimise spreading your cold or flu.

Swakopmund mayor calls for calm after “call” for people to occupy empty mass houses Payment dispute between main contractor and sub-contractors the reason for empty houses Sharlien Tjambari Swakopmund's mayor Nehemia Solomon called upon community members not to pay heed to calls to occupy mass houses which have not yet been allocated to their future owners. The mayor responded to social media messages in recent days where Affirmative Repositioning leader Job Amupanda allegedly called on people to occupy all empty mass houses in Swakopmund and Windhoek. “Reject and disengage yourself from any illegal actions like invading empty land or houses”, was the may-or's simple request. If there is truth in the fact that Amupanda made such calls, it remains questionable why he [Amupanda] has not yet been taken to task, as his social media messages could entice people to take the law into their own hands and also lead to the breakdown of the rule of law. A social media message purportedly sent from an account bearing the name “Job Shipululo Amupanda” reads: “Dear AR Activists & Homeless Namibians in Swakopmund and Windhoek. PLEASE

Occupy the Empty Houses Build with Government Money yet they are not occupied for YEARS. [sic] I give you permission for you to occupy those Houses [sic]. We can't have empty houses while our people are homeless!” It was this message, which has been shared among thousands of people which urged the mayor to call on people to exercise constraint. The Mass Housing Development Programme (MHDP) was implemented by Government with the provision of housing to all different categories of income groups. According to Salomon, out of a total of 4 000 houses, 2 796 were fully completed and handed over to beneficiaries in various local authorities

in all of Namibia's administrative Regions. In Swakopmund, Council availed three construction sites under the mass housing development programme and three contractors were appointed through the National Housing Enterprise to carry out the work. A total of 1 521 houses were expected to be completed but up to now 1 016 have been completed and handed over to rightful owners. Salomon further explained three contractors, one of the contractors sub-contracted two other companies to complete the construction of the remaining houses, are now in a dispute over alleged non-payments. A Namibian court ordered the main contract to settle the outstanding payments with the sub-

contractors. “It was clearly stated that Government does not owe any money to any contractor. The main contractor was fully paid and in return allegedly did not pay the sub-contractors. The court verdict was in favour of the sub-contractors who now keeps possession of the properties until the debt is settled”, explained Salomon recently at the first council meeting for the year. Adding, construction work can only resume once the main contractor settles the money owed. Government, through the Ministry of Urban and Rural De-

velopment, is in the process though to talk to the main contractor and to push for the matter to be settled so that construction can go ahead.

“Let us please allow the Ministry of Urban Development in conjunction with the Office of the Attorney-General to continue negotiations

with both the main con-tractor and the sub-contractors and for them to come to an agreement or at least an amicable solution”, concluded Salomon.

2020 National Cancer Outreach Programme activated Eileen van der Schyff

The Cancer Association of Namibia (CAN) started their 2020 National Cancer Outreach Programme (NCOP) this last week Monday. One thousand and twenty-seven people will be fully complementary screened in this program. The free screening of this amount of people is made possible by funds raised through the “Slice of Life, Raffle for Hope” project in 2019 which was supported by Gondwana Collection. In addition to the confirmed 1027 Namibians impacted, funds from the 2019 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project are reserved for the screening of at least another 2000 Namibians during the year. The National Cancer Outreach Program launched in August 2018, together with the CAN Medical Centre's in Windhoek, Swakopmund and Rehoboth screened close to 45 000 Namibians for cancer since January 2016. “We are fortunate that we have negotiated best-buy rates for consumables and laboratory service fees allowing us to screen Namibians for as little as N$100 per person at CAN's expense,“ explained Rolf Hansen, Chief Executive Officer of the Cancer Association of Namibia. Pictured is the official launch of the 2020 outreach programme that took place at the CAN Hardap Centre in Rehoboth If CAN is unable to offer full complementary services through on Monday morning where more than 100 ladies and 43 men attended the first outreach clinic for the year the NCOP, a minimal of N$70 donation will be levied. CAN will subsidise the rest. This fee has stayed the same for the past three years thanks to the Namibian community who generously donates and supports the fundraising drives and by doing so sustains the medical programmes of the association. Services of the outreach program include community health education on cancer, cervical screening, breast examinations, prostate education and PSA level screening in the prevention of prostate cancer. The CAN team visited towns in the Hardap Region this week. Towns visited were Rehoboth, Stampriet, Aranos, Mariental and Kalkrand. During February, outreach is planned for the Zambeziand Kavango Regions. Sr. Aina Nghitongo and Martha Angolo can be reached at 081 127 7740 for more information. Connect with CAN and take a glimpse of what they do and how YOU can impact lives and help fight cancer in Namibia: https://www.can.org.na https://www.facebook.com/CANamibia/

Namibia RCFAI & Kickboxing Academy at their 2019 awards ceremony recognised and honoured the top students for their hard work. The ceremony took place this past Friday at the Academy in Walvis Bay. This past year has been an interesting year for Martial Arts in Namibian both locally, nationally and internationally. Much has been done to develop the sport in all areas as the Academy has a total of 91 members with 4 coaches. The Chairman of the Namibia RCFAI & Kickboxing Academy Phillip Müller said at the award ceremony that the development has been done by the Academy in rural areas and members of the Academy have also done motivational speaking events especially for the youth. Müller said “We had a positive response through the NFC (Namibian Fight Championships) competitions, and we will try host the event every 6 (six) weeks to motivate students to attend classes more regularly to be eligible to compete in King of the Ring, Namibia Fight Championships and Desert Storm.” Muller added that Boxing and Kickboxing is a winning

combination together with working in harmony in the Erongo Region. The Academy plans to expand the exposure of Kickboxing and Boxing throughout Namibia. With the Academy growing annually, Muller said that 2020 will be an exciting year with lots of great achievements and even greater expectations as the Academy bought their own International Standard Boxing Ring, which makes it easier to host regular competitions. The Academy's long term athlete development is to send as many athletes as possible to competitions to expose them to all senarios regarding the sport and to give each student the opportunity to participate in many social events. “We are devoted to grow the sport in all areas and give all students the opportunity to compete. We want to get schools interested in the sport, as it's very important that eveyone knows how to defend themselves in today's world” Muller said. Lesley !Hoaeb achieved

Fistball season 2020 open tournament The new Bank Windhoek Fistball season in Swakopmund will begin this coming Saturday. The first games of the opening tournament will be kicked off at 8:30 at the SFC. The defending champion CFC 1 is traded as a favourite for the A-category title, but will still face strong competition. SFC 1 can have justified hopes for the B category victory as the team currently arethe B-league champions and the national cup winners which will certainly let them compete with confidence. After the more than three and a half months summer break, the Namibian fistball players can once again demonstrate their skills. 8 teams are divided into 2 groups. While the best two teams from each group will advance to the A-category semi-finals, the third and fourth-placed teams play in the semi-finals of the B-category. The matches are played according to time and not as usual according to sets. Only the final match

will be played best out of 5 sets. SKW 1 is likely to be even more competitive than last year. With Kristof Lerch, a former youth international returns to the GreenWhites. The 27 year old is a huge signing for the team that has an average age of about 39 years but which wants to fight for the title this year too. The SFC is the fastest growing club in the country. With the experience of the ex-national players Christian Knobloch and Olaf Haasethe 2 teams from the coast could provide for some surprises in the future. Meanwhile, CFC 1 captain GĂśtz Friedrich is still ruled out as he is plagued by a tough shoulder injury since June 2019. However, CFC 2 would like to prove that the 3rd place in the A-league as well as the opening- and national cup tournament last year was not a coincidence and aim to leave their strongest rival SKW 2 behind them again Florian Mosich from SFC 1 this year.
