Couple tells of terrifying ten minutes as robbers target Lothar’s Steakhouse Floris Steenkamp A couple shared the story of their ordeal when a gang held them and several others hostage at Lothar's Steakhouse in Walvis th Bay's 6 Street on Sunday evening during an armed robbery. The gang of eight got away with more than N$200 000 in cash and also ripped out and took along a close circuit television system's recording console. The couple spoke on condition of anonymity as the wife is still heavily traumatised and they fear for their safety with the gang still at large. “We arrived at Lothar's Steak House at 17:45 to order a pizza. A silver-grey Golf 4 GTI with three occupants pulled up as we was about to enter the restaurant. I owned a similar vehicle and made remarks over the rims of the vehicle,” the man told namib times yesterday. As he and his wife entered the reception area they heard the door of the restaurant closing behind them and next was the distinctive noise of a semi-automatic pistol being cocked. “We knew at once we were caught in an armed robbery. The one man walked up to us and ushered us into the restaurant section with the words – be quiet”. They had to lay down. Two others went to other parts of the restaurant and at one stage we could hear
they were hitting and throwing to the floor a customer who panicked, he explained. As he knew the robbers would be going for cell phones and other valuables he took his cell phone and placed it on a chair. Shortly thereafter one of the robbers came to them and removed both he and his wife's cell phones and a wallet. “After another minute and a half we were told to get up and go to the toilet section of the restaurant. We were several at that stage. My wife was mortified by fear and look at the person we think is the leader of the gang for several seconds,” the man recalls. This angered the gang member and he hit the wife, leading to the man trying to fend off the attack. This angered gang member then attempted to pistolwhip the wife, leading to an injury to the man's left hand as he again tried to fend off the attack. “I realised that although all the gang Continues on page 2

Omake gives crime a hard time South African airline SA Express flight schedules returned to normal at 18:00 on Sunday after the airline’s Air Operator’s Certificate was suspended by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) on Friday for problems relating to its system of quality assurance. The travel arrangements of thousands of air travelers at airports around South Africa, but also Walvis Bay Airport and Hosea Kutako International Airport were plunged into abrupt chaos when the suspension came into force on Friday. The suspension lasted for 42 hours. For many there were poor prospects to travel to holiday destinations for the long weekend. SA Express battled it out under circumstances and relied on alternative airlines for support. The air carrier also chartered planes resulting in mostly delays. Passengers to Walvis Bay from Johannesburg were three hours late. SA Express is yet to make an announcement before the full impact on air travel would become known. “The important news is SA Express is flying again. We can at least return home as normal”, a couple of Walvis Bay currently on a short holiday break to Cape Town said over the weekend. They were delayed in their flight to Cape Town on Friday and temporarily lost hope for a normal return.

members up to that stage was actually very polite and it was certain they would not harm us, this one guy was getting violent. I pushed everyone into the toilet section and closed the door”, the man explained to namib times. Adding he held the door closed to avoid any gang member from entering the toilet section. “We heard a shot being fired and the next moment we smelled gas. Despite fear we went out of the toilet and knew we had to get out of this place at once”, the man explained. To their relief the armed robbers left the premises. Yesterday in recalling this nightmare experience, the man said he is certain that at least five of the armed robbers entered the restaurant before the robbery and were seated at tables and the bar respectively. They were in fact sleepers and activated once their three cronies came in and held up the staff and patrons. At 17:54, some ten minutes it was all over. The patrons notified the emergency services and after the arrival of the police were requested to lay charges and statements. Important information: the Golf 4 GTI has tinted windows and has special alloy rims. The vehicle is also lowered. All the armed robbers were well dressed and made no efforts to conceal their faces.

For close to 15 years the ruling party has been leasing the erf from Council for a token N$10 per year; this constitutes a monthly rent of 83 cents. Council initially decided on the token rent as the party had the intent to develop and maintain a self-help training centre for construction workers/artisans, but instead the erf has been serving as SWAPO's regional headquarters. After the rental agreement was about to expire, the party showed the intent to buy the property and Council decided on a purchase price of N$1,1 million. The SRA objected to the transaction, as the sales price was too low. Council decided to amend the price and reduced it to “a ridiculous“ N$30 000 for the entire property. Once again the SRA objected to the sale. Council resolved in 2014 to submit a motivational letter to the line ministry to proceed with the transaction. Council received an answer in March this year. Men in taxi shoots at Swakopmund neighbourhood watch member on patrol Erwin Leuschner
In an unprecedented incident for the coast a member of the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch (SNW) was shot at on Sunday evening shot at after following a suspicious vehicle. The incident occurred in Mile 4 drive, being the northern-most street in Swakopmund close to the salt works. Residents of the northern suburbs of Swakopmund, especially in Extension 22, live in constant fear after that part of town has in recent weeks been hit by a series of house burglaries. To add to their fear, a member of the Neighbourhood Watch, who was doing his routine patrol, was now shot at. In a telephonic interview the member recalled the incident, but he wishes to remain anonymous. According to him he started his shift as usual on Sunday evening and did his rounds driving around the northern suburbs. It was about 22:30 when he was travelling on the Mile 4 road in a westerly direction towards the ocean, when he noticed an oncoming silver Toyota sedan. It was a taxi. “The taxi was driving at an extremely slow speed. When we were about to pass each other I saw the occupants wearing balaclavas and when they saw me they pulled them down and the driver immediately started speeding off towards the Henties Bay road,” he explained.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, a sales price of N$220 000 by private treaty was approved. According to the Agenda of the Council meeting the current municipal value of the controversial erf, zoned as “office“, stands at N$1 980 000. The market value is N$2.6 million. “Can anybody here explain the fairness of this matter to me“, a statement reads which was presented by Council member Wilfriend Groenewald (SRA) at the recent meeting. “We all here swore a solemn oath to serve
The member described the whole situation as extremely suspicious and took up pursuit. The taxi turned in a northerly direction on the Henties Bay Road and the member continued the chase. “It took about three kilometres before I finally caught up to them,” he continued. He flashed his lights in an attempt to stop the car, but instead he saw one of the occupants peek his head out the car window, raised a gun and shot at him. “I got a fright, immediately hit the brakes and called for assistance. What was I as an unarmed guy supposed to do?” The taxi drove off and no arrest was made. The member joined the Neighbourhood Watch recently after he himself fell victim to a break-in. He woke up one morning only to discover some of his personal belongings missing. “Besides our private space being invaded, we don't sleep sound anymore. If we hear the smallest of noises outside we jump,” he said and concluded: “Maybe these guys (suspected armed robbers) are part of this burglary syndicate.”
Swakopmund diligently, honestly, fairly and to the best of our abilities. Our ministry persistently tells us everything must be sustainable and we should forget any party politics as we are serving all the people. Are we not misusing our position here and show favouritism towards the ruling party?“ ”How can Council now sell the Erf which has been valued at N$1 980 000 for an amount of N$220 000 which represents an amount of N$50.42 per m² to an organisation which can clearly not be defined as ‚Institutional?“
Young girl hit by car whilst cycling A little girl was on Thursday run over while cycling across the pedestrian crossing at the roundabout in the Swakopmund suburb Vineta (Daniel Kamho Avenue/ Vrede Rede Avenue). The injured child, who was said to be about eleven years old, was taken to hospital by Eagle Christian Ambulance Service. The incident happened at about 10:30, when the driver of a double-cab bakkie, Frans Amupadhi, was travelling along Daniel Kamho Avenue in a northern direction. “I was coming from town and went straight towards Ocean View, when suddenly the small girl on her bike appeared before me. It was too late,” he said to namib times at the scene. The girl was hit by the car and even though Amupadhi immediately applied brakes, his car only came to a standstill about five meters on. “When I got out, I saw the girl crawling out underneath my car. She was talking and stood up, but I told her to lie down, while I immediately phoned the ambulance and
Motor Vehicle Accident Fund (MVA),” he said. The nature of her injuries were not known. When namib times arrived at the scene, a large number of curious bystanders crowded the area. Even though members of the Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch tried to regulate traffic, many curious drivers – as it is usually the case in Namibia – stopped in the road to look what had happened.

Operation Omake gives crime a hard time
Swakopmund museum now offers guided tours........
Erwin Leuschner
Following the successful launch of the nationwide crime prevention initiative “Operation Omake” in Windhoek last year, the police in Erongo is also making strides to make the region safer. Today the police will start clearing riverbeds and thin out bushy areas in Otjimbingwe to curb crime. According to the Namibian Police Unit Commander for Community Affairs in the Erongo Region, Sergeant Iileni Shapumba, “Omake” is a continuous operation similar to the one in Windhoek. It does not only include the clearing of bushes though. The Roll-Out of the initiative started at Usakos earlier this month, where the police together with other various stakeholder cleared various bushy areas with the aim of deterring criminal activities. Soon “Operation Omake” will be rol-
led out in other towns and villages in the region. “It is an extensive crime prevention operation. Be-cause the coastal towns don't have bushes, we have taken a different approach here,” Shapumba says. According to him the police has already engaged the municipalities and also the regional electricity distributer Erongo RED to set up more street lamps in poorly lit areas in towns. “Usually these dark areas are used by criminals for robberies or rapes. Especially now in winter when it
gets dark early” he explained. As a part of this operation the police is also regularly conducting random patrols and searches at bars and shebeens. “Last weekend we searched people at a couple of bars in Mondesa in Swakopmund and we confiscated about six knives. These knives could have been used in robberies or even murders,” he says. Shapumba continued saying that these random searches will be conducted on an ongoing basis with the aim of preventing crime.

Accidents mark start to May Day in Erongo Erwin Leuschner
Even before the public holidays dotting the first days of May have started a significant number of road accidents were reported across the Erongo Region. By yesterday afternoon one fatality was reported, after the driver of a vehicle lost control while travelling on the C14 gravel road between Walvis Bay and Solitaire.
The driver of the small bakkie lost control over the vehicle on the road between Swakopmund and Arandis on Saturday afternoon, causing the vehicle to overturn. Both occupants, including a two year old child, apparently left the scene uninjured. Photo by Steenbras Tow-In
The fatal accident occurred Sunday, 1 May, at 17:00 about 125 kilometres from Walvis Bay in the vicinity of the Kuiseb Canyon. According to Erongo Crime Investigations Coordinator Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa it is alleged the driver of the double cab Bakkie lost control of the vehicle whereafter it overturned. The driver, Derick Rodrick Listing (41), was thrown out of the vehicle and died on the spot, whilst the passenger, Romeo Arthur Van Wyk (37), was rushed to hospital for treatment. His condition was described as stable. In a similar accident on Saturday afternoon, 30 April, a small bakkie with two occupants, amongst them a two year old child, left the road and overturned on the B2 highway between Swakopmund and Arandis. According to eyewitnesses the vehicle started to swerve from one side of the road to the other. Miraculously the swerving vehicle at several instances narrowly missed oncoming traffic, including a truck. The car left the road and overturned. According to the West Coast Safety Initiative (WCSI) both the driver and the child sustained minor injuries, being “confused and in shock”. Both left the scene in private transport prior to the arrival of emergency services. Numerous passengers of a seven-seater mini van sustained injuries when the vehicle they were travelling in overturned on Sunday on the C34 between Swakopmund and Henties Bay.
According to West Coast Safety Initiative the driver of the seven-seater had to take evasive action in the vicinity of Mile 14 to avoid a headon collision with an oncoming bakkie. The sevenseater subsequently left the road and overturned. All passengers were transported to the Swakopmund State Hospital for further treatment. The driver of the bakkie was arrested soon after the incident. An alleged reckless manoeuvre was the cause of another accident on Sunday late in the evening on the B2 highway close to the Husab Mine turnoff. According to West Coast Safety Initiative the driver of a sedan vehicle with a total of five occupants tried to execute a U-Turn on the highway and did not see an approaching bakkie. The bakkie with three occupants ploughed into the sedan, but no one sustained injuries. Miraculously only one person was injured during a serious accident on Thursday evening, 29 April, on the B2 highway between Swakopmund and Arandis. According to West Coast Safety Initiative two bakkies and a fuel tanker were involved. It is alleged that one bakkie struck the right front side of the truck's diesel tanks, causing a massive spill. A detour had to be put in place to ensure the flow of traffic past the scene while emergency and essential services attended to the spillage and while clearing the scene of debris. The road was closed off for an extended period and was considered very slippery. (See related articles)

Police clamp down on alleged drug dealer The police in Walvis Bay arrested a 44 year-old man during a successful drug bust in the harbour town. Henok Shikondeli Kuume was found in the possession of crack cocaine worth an estimated street value of N$27 500. Police made the arrest on Wednesday 27 April, at midnight in Kuisebmond. According to Erongo Crime Investigations Coordinator Deputy Com-missioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, Kuume was found in possession of five “full moons”, one “half moon” and two “half bullets.” He was charged with dealing in crack cocaine. Crack is a form of cocaine that is smoked. It offers a short but intense high and is increasingly found to be the drug of choice for recreational drug users.

Parents not happy Food kitchen runs out with Swakopmund of food and money Hospitality Academy Sharlien Tjambari

Some parents in Swakopmund are not happy with the standard of education offered and the way classes are conducted by lecturers at the Namibia Hospitality Training Academy (NAHOTA) Swakopmund Branch. “We asked lecturers why they are not at classes on time every day. Their excuse is they do not have time and have other responsibilities”. A parent who preferred to remain anonymous said she registered her child with NAHOTA Swakopmund last year in September. That was for a three months computer and waitressing course. According to this parent NAHOTA offered waitressing classes for two weeks o n l y, o f w h i c h everything was just theory and no practical appli-cation was provided. Computer classes were given for three months. “When it was time to write exams in December the students were told that the electricity was off and they could not write exams”, explained this disgruntled parent. Earlier this year the students were told the school would be closed between February and March. “We were very disappointed. How can a three months course
take six to seven months to conclude? Some days the children would go to school and the lecturers are not present. Other days, especially with the computer classes, the students would play games on the computers during class session”, a parent added. One parent was very upset and said up to this point her child only received one certificate. The other certificate has not been issued yet. Alex Matukarua, the founder and Managing Director of N A H O TA h a s a different view. To him it is evident that what NAHOTA is doing amounts to quality education. Most of the students who graduate from NAHOTA are employed with some of the big companies and hotels in Namibia. “Employers always call me and ask me to send them some of my students”. Responding on the issue of certificates which are not issued, Matukarua said some of the parents have not paid the tuition fees in full, but expects the
certificate. “All payments should be in full before we can issue any certificate.” The students from Swakopmund who are in urgent need of their certificates, and have paid in full, we asked them to pick up their certificates in Walvis Bay because our branch in Swakopmund is currently closed, explained Matukarua as the lease agreement was terminated and he is in search of a new secure place to rent. According to Matukarua there are always issues in every school. “These are minor issues we are working on. The Swakopmund branch will soon reopen”, he proclaimed. NAHOTA was founded in 2007 and specialises in professional customer service delivery training. It is aimed at those with a passion for hospitality and tourism in Namibia. Mostly under privileged Namibians benefit from training. The institution has branches at Walvis Bay, Windhoek and Otjiwarongo.

Gone are the days of having a stuffy nose and getting a headache from the fumes of other products. It is safe enough to use in your bedroom and at night. None of the models need any expensive installation or chimneys. This is an advantage for those renting premises as the biofire is taken along when you move. A biofire warms a room of 30m2 within 15 minutes. The warmth is a cosy warmth that is decorative as well. Biofires add an ambience which is cosy, romantic and 'gemutlich'. All the models are visually appealing and there is a biofire to suit every taste whether it be a wall mounted model/ table model or free standing model. Our customers are so happy with their biofires that they usually buy another one! A f r i k a re i s e 1 9 5 2 schrieb.

Auch Knochen und Zähne brauchen Vitamin A. http://eatsmarter.de/ ernaehrung/gesunde -lebensmittel/avoca do

Columbia University bereits 1939 herausgefunden.

Ep notch opening win in Windhoek The Eastern Province Kings secured their first campaign win with a 31-18 (halftime 19-8) victory over Windhoek Draught Welwitschias XV in their new provincial tournament rugby fixture at Hage Geingob Stadium, Windhoek, on Saturday.
Raymond van Schoor Cricket Foundation raises funds for development Raymond van Schoor Cricket Foundation raises funds for development The development of Namibian cricket is expected to receive a significant boost in the near future, after the Raymond van Schoor Cricket Foundation hosted a very successful fundraising Gala dinner on Friday evening.
The Kings scored five tries to two to finally break their competition duck in perfect conditions for rugby in the Namibian capital. The sides, placed last and second-last on the table, came into the match searching for their first win of the campaign. The youthful Eastern Province Kings had lost matches to SWD Eagles, Boland Kavaliers and the high-flying Border Bulldogs. Their opponents had also suffered defeats in their opening three matches against the Toyota Free State XV, Xerox Golden Lions and Cell C Sharks XV. The Kings opened the scoring as early as the ninth minute through a Stephanus Niewoudt try. Almost immediately after that, the Welwitschias XV were dealt two major blows when prop Shaun du Preez and flank Leneve Damens were sin-binned. Kings fullback Courtney Winnaar took advantage of the extra numbers to score the Kings' second try which was converted by Simon Bolze. The Welwitschias displayed fighting spirit thoughout and fought straight back with right wing Johann Tromp dotting down. EP increased their lead when wing Athi Mayinje converted centre Somila Jho's try but then the home team replied with two penalties either side of the break through flyhalf Shaun Kaizemi. At this stage the teams were trading blows and replacement flyhalf Siphu Msutwana scored again for the Kings. Tromp got his second try almost on the hour and Kaizemi added the two points to bring the Namibians back into the game. But the Kings had the last laugh when left wing Lindelwe Zungu crashed over for his team's fifth try, which was converted by Mayinje. SCORERS Welwitschias – Tries: Johann Tromp (2); Conversions: Shaun Kaizemi; Penalties: Shaun Kaizemi (2) EP Kings – Tries: Courtney Winnaar, Lindelwe Zungu, Siphu Msutwana, Somila Jho, Stephanus Nieuwoudt; Conversions: Athi Mayinje (2), Simon Bolze

The Raymond van Schoor Cricket Foundation is a charitable organisation that aims to assist young Namibian cricketers to fulfill their dreams and live out their passion, by developing their talent as cricketers. The foundation successfully raised N$100,000 through an auction during the Gala dinner attended by 150 supporters on Friday evening. This event was the foundations' first fund raising event after its launch in February this year. Auctioned items included number 27 national team jerseys of late Raymond van Schoor, as well as an autographed picture of Raymond and the Namibian National Team. Raymond, who represented Namibia as cricketer since 2002, where he played in the U13 national team, tragically passed away last year. In rememberance of Raymond, Zandré la Cock founded the foundation with Cricket Namibia president, Richard Frankle, and national player Sarel Burger as co-trustees. The Raymond van Schoor Cricket Foundation aims to raise additional funds this year through a cricket
tournament for u/11 and u/13 teams, as well as a golf day. The trustees further invite everyone to help and assit them in making a difference in a children's cricket careers and give them the best to achieve their goals. The foundation initially focuses on U/11 and U/13 players, who plan to follow in Raymond's footsteps and are dedicated, motivated, talented and chasing their dreams of becoming successful cricketers on international level. Raymond was one of Namibia's most decorated cricket players in recent history. First achieving national colours for his countries U13 national team in 2002, “Razorblade” went on to play for every junior team until earning his first senior national team cap in 2008. From that day forward, the versatile von Schoor collected many accolades for his native country at international events while being an essential part of team, which he captained for a brief stint during 2013 and 2014. His exceptional performances earned him the prestigious award of being Namibia's Cricketer of the year. Trustees: Zandré la Cock (Founder), Richard Frankle, Sarel Burger The trustees of the Raymond van Schoor Cricket Foundation are always excited to share and discuss their ideas and passion on the development of young cricketers in Namibia with anyone interested in joining them in making a difference and can be contacted at rvscricf@iway.na.
FNB Kwata Cricket day draws huge number of youngsters As part of their long-term development program, Cricket Namibia (CN) hosted a fun day for young cricketers from all over Windhoek last weekend. These fun days are held to create interest and inspire youngsters to take up the game of cricket as well as to give CN's newly
mini cricket matches and as for the development officers, they also coached a cricket team for the first-time in their life's. All players played two matches whereby everyone got the opportunity to bat, bowl, wicket keep and field. The players also had the privilege to meet some of the Namibia's national players while also receiving a word of encouragement from the CN's Chief Executive Officer Dr Donovan Zealand who encourage the youngsters to start their cricket journeys now to become professionals one day to represent their country. All players also received a FNB Kwata Cricket Shirt and a snack at the end of the day. This day would not have been possible if it wasn't for CN's long standing partner, the First National Bank Foundation, that assist with the development of the Game.

Sharlien Tjambari
With the 1st round of this year's Streethouse Soccer League recently concluded, SFC Coach George Engelbauer is so far satisfied with the results, the matches and the quality of play. “We had quite a number of participating teams and a lot of kids, which is very good,” he said to namib times.

According to Engelbauer the 2nd round of the league will commence in June with the final and last round to start in September or October.
Rugby league-New Zealand players banned after prescription drug abuse WELLINGTON, May 2 (Reuters) - Six New Zealand-based rugby league players have been banned from international matches after revelations of prescription drug abuse on a night out, according to media reports. Three players from New Zealand Warriors, who compete in Australia's National Rugby League competition, were ruled out of selection for New Zealand's national Kiwis team for Friday's test against Australia in Newcastle. The Warriors also banned three players from being selected for Pacific nation test matches in Sydney on the weekend. Five of the six players had admitted to mixing prescription drugs with energy drinks on a night out in Auckland, two days after a heavy loss against Melbourne Storm, the New Zealand Herald said. A sixth player denied taking any drugs but said he had accompanied his team mates and acted as their driver, the paper said. Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney said he supported the club's decision to issue the bans. "I was aware of the circumstances of the team protocol and the issues there and my decision and the selectors' decision was to support the club on the issue," he told local media. "Knowing all the circumstances our view on it was that they were not going to be considered for selection." The bans come after New Zealand international Kieran Foran, captain of Parramatta Eels, was put on an indefinite period of leave by the Sydney-based NRL team after being rushed to hospital for a prescription drug overdose, according to local media reports. Only two Namibian swimmers, Phillip Seidler and Jörn Diekmann, participated in South Africa at the SA Aquatic National Swimming Championship and Olympic Trials, which took place from 10 to 16 April at the Kingspark Aquatic Center in Durban. This year's event was a make or break for South African swimmers for the final 2016 Olympic Rio team selection by SASCOC. Phillip Seidler and Jörn Diekmann had to compete against the top South African swimmers including Olympic Gold medalist Chad Le Clos, Cameron van der Burgh and Olympic hopes Mathew Meyer and Christopher Reid. Phillip had a week of success. On his first day he won the youth gold medal in 400m Freestyle and qualified for the senior finals. With his time of 4:09,35 min he broke his own Namibian Men 17-18 400m Free record and the long standing Namibian Men OPEN 400m Free record of Heiko Horn (1996) by 3,75 seconds. With his new best time of 8:32,76 min, he also broke his own Namibian Men 17-18 800m Free record and the Men OPEN record of Quinton Delie by 27,05 seconds. He won the youth gold medal, as well as the senior bronze medal, which was Phillip's biggest achievement. On the last day Phillip tackled his favorite event 1500m Freestyle. He again showed all his skills as long distance swimmer with a time of 16:28,58 min, qualifying for the senior finals and winning youth gold medal. Again he broke the Namibian Men 17-18 1500m Free and Men OPEN 1500m Free records by 27,56 seconds. Phillip made Namibia proud. In total he broke 6 Namibian records, winning 3 youth gold, 1 youth bronze and 1 senior bronze medal. After competing at the All Africa Games in 2015 in Congo (Brazzaville) Jörn Diekmann also qualified for SA Aquatic National Swimming Championship. He participated in the following events: Men Open 200 Free, Men Open 50 Free, Men Open 200 Fly Men Open 100 Fly, Men Open 100 Free, Men Open 50 Fly Jörn showed all his dedication and determination and improved his 50m Freestyle with a new best time of 26,50 seconds. With his impressive underwater work in the Fly events he again showed his skills to keep up with his strong competitors.
