Locke vom Hocker Erwin Leuschner A burst pipe on the corner of Ametis and Saphir Street in Swakopmund early yesterday morning caused absolute mayhem. Some residents leaving for work got stuck in the mud and had to be towed out, while a room of a guesthouse down the road was flooded. According to some residents, the pipe burst sometime after midnight. It was reported to the municipality at about 5:00 in the morning. When namib times visited the scene the road was closed and an utter mess. Some residents were busy shovelling sand from their driveways while others made small sand walls to redirect the water flow.

Baby number 3 surprises Sharlien Tjambari mom and dad Jetlien Noabes, a resident of Swakopmund gave birth to three beautiful babies on Sunday morning after a long wait of nine months, but she says baby number three surprised her a lot. Not only the fact that it was a girl, but because Jelien only expected twins and not a triplet. “All this time I was expecting to give birth to two babies only, because that is what the sonar showed us, only two babies and when baby number three came I was surprised” said Jetlien. The babies were born on Sunday morning. Baby number one was a boy and his mother and father named him Alvin Namaseb, he was born at 04:20 with a weight of 1.97kg. Baby number two was also a boy and came just 11 minutes after his brother at 04:31 and his weight was 2,13kg, his name is Calvin Namaseb. Blessing Namases came ten minutes after her brother and her actual time of birth was recorded as 04:40 and to proof that she is a girl and the last born of the family, she weight 1.56kg. Jetlien's first born is a ten year old boy so Blessing is the only girl among her three brothers and mom says she will be spoiled. The babies were born at Swakopmund State Hospital and this was the second time in many years that the Swakopmund State hospital delivered triplets. Last year on 12 October Meme Taimi Ekandjo also welcomed a triplet into her family and was marked as the first lady to give birth to a triplet at Swakopmund State Hospital in a decade. Jetlien says she is unemployed but the father of the babies and her life partner is employed. Jetlien further said that if there is anyone who is willing to help her out with anything then they are most welcome, because she will need all the help she can get. Her contact details is 081 206 0597

Blood gives life Piquet Jacobs Blood donation is one of the most significant contributions that can be made towards society. Donating your blood is definitely an act of goodness. Many hospitals and clinics are in constant need of the blood for different purposes. That is why it is a decent idea to donate blood that can help other people. Namibia Blood Transfusion Services (NamBTS) makes a huge effort year round encouraging the public to donate blood, in the hopes that it can save lives. In many cases, blood is the only 'medicine' that can help a patient recover, therefore it is important to ensure that blood is available at all times for patients when needed. Donated blood is divided into 3 different blood products, potentially saving 3 lives with 1 unit. The main blood products are red cell concentrates, which lasts up to 42 days; platelet concentrates, which lasts up to 5 days and fresh frozen plasma, which can last up to 1 year. If you are medically healthy, between the ages of 16 and 65 years old, weigh more than 50kg and interested in donating blood; find out if you are eligible to donate blood and locate a donation clinic near you. You could save a life. 8 year old run down Piquet Jacobs An 8 year old girl was hit by a car on Wednesday after she attempted to cross the road near the 'Welcome to Walvis Bay' sign. It is not yet clear what caused the incident, but it is believed that the young child did not pay full attention to oncoming vehicles and found herself in the way of a vehicle travelling from Swakopmund. She sustained a fracture to her left leg and is receiving medical attention at Cottage Medi-Clinic in Swakopmund. A case of reckless or negligent driving has been opened against the driver. This incident once again highlights the dangers surrounding the area, as many similar incidents have occurred in the past. Warrant Officer Shapumba urges both pedestrians and drivers to be extremely careful in the area, “People should be aware of the designated crossings. We urge drivers to be respectful and observant towards road signs in the area. We need people to be responsible, Shapumba continued.

KÜSKA donates N$11 111.11 Hit-and-Run driver to CHAIN arrested at home Erwin Leuschner

The Swakopmund Karnevalsverein (KÜSKA) continues to support various welfare organisations in Swakopmund. Last week the KÜSKA donated a total of N$11 111.11 to the organisation CHAIN (Children with Handicaps Action in Namibia) to support their operations. CHAIN is a kindergarden-based facility, currently looking after 20 handicapped children. The kids are collected from their homes in the morning and taken to a centre, where they follow an educational programme. They are taught not only basic education but also physical movement and mobility and are provided with a

well-balanced meal during the day. The Karnevalsverein is a non-profit organisation which aims to support at least one social institution every year. Thanks to generous donations and a successful Karneval in 2016 it was possible for the KÜSKA to lend a helping hand to two more institutions. Earlier the KÜSKA gave N$11 111.11 to each the Have-a-Heart Project and the Namibia Scientific Society.

Erwin Leuschner The police has arrested 30 year-old Johannes Jacobs in connection with the Hit-and-Run incidents, which occurred in Swakopmund on Friday, 27 January. He appeared in the Magistrates Court and was released on bail of N$4 000. According to Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa, police Regional Crime Investigations Co-ordinator for Erongo, Jacobs was arrested at his house in Swakopmund. Kashuupulwa shed further light on the incident. According to her Jacobs allegedly bumped a pedestrian between 20:00 and 21:00. The victim is 21 year-old Anoidy Van Wyk. Instead of stopping and rendering assistance Jacobs allegedly fled the scene of the incident. He was driving an Isuzu Pick-Up. Although various sources said to namib times that a second Hit-and-Run incident occurred shortly thereafter, whereby a child was bumped, Kashuupulwa didn't mention this. After this the driver allegedly still did not stop and crashed through a wall in Modelani Street. While the driver allegedly fled the scene, the passenger, known as Risto, was injured and treated on scene. Jacobs is charged with reckless or negligent driving and failure to ascertain damages. The case was postponed to 16 March for further investigation.

The Swakopmund Karnevalsverein (KÜSKA) recently donated N$11 111.11 to CHAIN (Children with Handicaps Action in Namibia). Thanks to a generous donations and a successful Karneval in 2016 the KÜSKA previously financially supported the Have-a-Heart Project and the Namibia Scientific Society.

Lubrication Chemical Services, to many known as 'LCS', was started off by Johan Jansen van Vuuren in 1987. With a heart full of passion and 3 employees, Johan obtained the Molub Oils agency, which allowed them to service the mines with heavy duty oils and greases. As time progressed and experience matured, Johan started specializing in protective coatings – still servicing the mining industry – as well as the automotive industry. This pathed the way for the future of the

company. LCS was able to offer quality workmanship with high quality protective coatings to not just the commercial market, but also, by becoming a household name to every coastal car owner. Rhinolining (Trademark) has given every vehicle the chance of looking new for longer than what our coastal mist and wetness would have liked it to be. Rhinolining

The strong, young and dynamic team - brothers Marko and Aiko van Vuuren

protects the loading surface from damage due to loading. Whether it's your bakkie load box, trailor or anything that needs protection – LCS is able to treat and spray. Due to Walvis Bay falling in a zone 5 category of corrosion – measured according to the international coating agencies, any metal exposed to the outside elements, has a short life span. Having taught his sons, Marko and Aiko, from a young age the traits of the business – he confidently handed Aiko the business over in 2010 and is now enjoying retirement with his wife, Lissie Marko joined Aiko in 2015 – which makes them a strong, young and dynamic team with years of personal training from their dad. Having the knowledge of modern

technology, quality workmanship and strategic planning – they are pruning the company for a new season. LCS offers not just Rhinolining to all loading vehicles, but also treats all kinds of vehicles with a underbody protective coating. Two kinds of options are available when booking your vehicle for this kind of service – please ask about these options at time of booking. “To mark our 30 years in business – we are very proud to announce a new addition to our company.” The Bluchem (Trademark) treatment license was secured last year, which enables LCS to expand in the field of protective coatings. LCS is now also able to treat household and industrial Aircons (HVAC) units, again, with high quality products. This gives a longer life span to your unit, as well as reducing energy consumption. Coils

and exterior panels are treated by using the Bluguard product – which has aluminium flakes in it, to give the ultimate protection against corrosion – as well as the pc board of that unit can be given a corrosion protection. All in all – value to the client. LCS will be launching a competition on 10th February – which will run for the month of February. Like us on our facebook page for more details, as 3 big prizes will be handed out during that time period. A big thank you to our Heavenly Father, valued customers and loyal suppliers over these past 30 years. Pilz? Schirm? Beides?

Loving for a loving home to call my own Hello, my name is Bubbles. ♥ I arrived at the Walvis Bay SPCA as a stray but if I look in the mirror, I see one handsome boy . I dream at night of playing ball and having my own doggie bed in a warm and loving home and some human siblings that play with me. I am fit and generally a bundle of energy and I have a bubbly personality (I think that is why the humans now call me Bubbles I don't know exactly how old I am but I think around 4 or 5 years. You see, people don't really want me because I am DEAF I don't know what happened to my hearing but it obviously causes humans some discomfort so either I get overlooked or I get returned to the shelter after getting a taste of home life That makes me sad. So if you find it in your heart to overlook my handicap and take me home, I promise to entertain you and to love you loyally forever ♥♥

Have-a-Heart Mobile concludes successful spay-trip in Erongo Erwin Leuschner

The first spay and neuter trip by the Mobile Animal Clinic of Baines VetCare CC in the Erongo Region was a big success. More than 277 cats and dogs were treated over the course of the past two weeks in various towns in the region. The most recent spayathon across the region was made possible thanks to various animal welfare organisations, especially Have-a-Heart Groups, who teamed up with Baines VetCare CC in Windhoek. The custom built Mobile Animal Clinic of Baines VetCare CC allows Have-a-Heart Mobile to work in any location across Namibia. The first stop of the clinic was in Karibib, where the two vets Dr Ian Baines and Dr Maja Dahlberg treated 30 animals. The team continued their journey in Usakos, where they treated 25 animals, before arriving in Swakopmund. During their three-day visit in Swakopmund a total of 96 pets were spayed or neutered. In Swakopmund the team was supported by the Swakop Vet Clinic. The next stop for the Mobile Animal Clinic was in Henties Bay where the team treated 46 animals. For the first time other smaller towns were included in the Spayathon. In Uis the vets treated 32 animals, in Khorixas 23 and in Kamanjab 25. The team ended their spay and neuter trip yesterday in Outjo, where the first Namibian Have-a-Heart Project started out. The Have-a-Heart Project is a non-profit organisation offering spay and neuter services to

pet owners with a low or no income. “Our dream is that every animal will enjoy a healthy and happy life,” is one of the projects mottos. The foundation's mission is to substantially reduce and finally eliminate stray animals by providing spay and neuter services to underserved communities in Namibia. By providing these services in targeted areas and promoting the message of “saving lives through sterilization”, the organisation wishes to reach the goal of reducing stray animals and eliminating euthanasia of stray animals. The next spay and neuter trip by the Mobile Animal Clinic will be conducted in the southern part of Namibia at the end of March. The specific towns to be targeted include Keetmanshoop, Aus, Bethanie, Lüderitzbucht, Karasburg and Grünau. Since Have-a-Heart started out a few years ago there has been a significant reduction of stray animals in many a town, making a positive impact. Dr Ian Baines and Dr Maja Dahlberg of Baines VetCare CC treated more than 277 cats and dogs over the past two weeks during the spay and neuter trip in Erongo. They visited a total of eight towns. The three safest cars ever tested by Euro NCAP are made by Volvo

Volvo Cars has cemented its position amongst the leaders of automotive safety innovation with its new S90 sedan and V90 wagon by being the first car maker to score a

full six points in the Autonomous Emergency Braking for Pedestrians (AEB Pedestrian) test procedure and an overall 5 Star rating for both cars. These latest Euro

NCAP safety ratings were coincidentally announced just as the new Volvo S90 was launched to the South African market at the end of January 2017. The S90 and V90

results surpass the best overall score of any model tested in 2016 and now make Euro NCAP's top3 best-ever performing cars all Volvos. The result follows

in the footsteps of the XC90, which was the first car from any manufacturer to score full points in the Euro NCAP Autonomous Emergency Braking Car to Car rearend tests (AEB City and AEB Interurban). The S90 and V90 performed as expected in the 2017 testing cycle, achieving a full 5 stars each, thanks in large part to the high level of standard safety equipment in the cars. "We work hard to ensure that our cars fulfil all safety requirements and pass all testing procedures that the ratings agencies develop. Our main focus is, and always has been, real-life safety. Autonomous Emergency Braking systems, such as our City Safety system, also represent a clear step forwards on our journey toward fully autonomous cars, which we see as a key element to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries," says Malin Ekholm, Director of the Volvo Car Safety Centre at

Volvo Car Group. Volvo's success in the Autonomous Emergency Braking tests are a result of the advanced City Safety system which is standard in all new Volvo cars. City Safety works by identifying potential hazards on the road ahead, such as vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in certain situations, day and night. "Safety has always been our key priority at Volvo Cars. These 5-star ratings and maximum points in the AEB testing procedures underscore our ongoing commitment to delivering a safe, enjoyable and confident driving experience in our cars," adds Ekholm. The AEB Pedestrian tests performed by Euro NCAP are designed to check performance of pedestrian detection systems using three road crossing scenarios, all of which would result in a fatal collision if the AEB system did not intervene. The tests represent common and

critical situations that frequently result in pedestrian casualties in the real world: ·An adult runs into the road from the driver's side of the vehicle ·An adult walks into the road from the passenger side of the vehicle (two tests are carried out for this scenario) ·A child runs from between two parked cars into the road from the passenger side of the vehicle Volvo Cars has a long-held vision that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by the year 2020. The S90 and V90 are further proof of Volvo's continuing investment in and commitment to automotive safety leadership. In South Africa, Volvo's full arsenal of safety equipment is available with no compromise. In the local context, the new Volvo S90, like the XC90, is fitted as standard with Volvo's complete City Safety and IntelliSafe offerings. The Volvo V90 is not available in Southern Africa.

Self-driving cars are getting better at it

* IOL Self-driving car prototypes appear to be getting better at negotiating California streets and highways without a human backup driver intervening. Data made public by California transportation regulators reflected safetyrelated incidents reported by 11 companies that have been testing more than 100 vehicles on public roads, primarily in the Silicon Valley neighborhoods where the technology has grown up. The reports were made to California's Department of Motor Ve h i c l e s , w h i c h posted them online. The Waymo, as Google's self-driving car project was recently rebranded, did far more testing than the other 10 companies combined. Waymo reported that its fleet drove itself more than a million kilometres with 124 safetyrelated "disengagements," which must be reported when the technology fails or the backup driver takes control out of concern that the car is malfunctioning. The Google project's disengagement rate was the equivalent of one incident every 8000km, a notable drop from the previous

year, when there was an average of one every 2000km. Dmitri Dolgov, Waymo's head of selfdriving technology, commented: "This four-fold improvement reflects the significant work we've been doing to make our software and hardware more capable and mature." Waymo's chief critic acknowledged the improvement, but John Simpson of the nonprofit Consumer Watchdog said the number of disengagements shows the cars still "simply aren't ready to be released to roam our roads" without human backup drivers. Cruise Automation, a startup bought by General Motors in 2016, reported driving the second most test kilometres. Cruise said its prototypes had 181 disengagements over 15 642km (one every 86km) and that it was "pleased with our progress" during testing on the complex streets of San Francisco. Though imperfect, the data represent the best peek the public gets into the secretive and fiercely competitive world of self-driving cars and how the prototypes are performing. California required

the disengagement reports as part of regulations governing testing on public roads. Separately, the state also requires companies to report any collisions involving its cars. When the technology will be ready for the public depends on several factors, including regulators' readiness and company confidence the vehicles are safe.

While Tesla's Elon Musk has been bullish, talking about months rather than years, companies such as Waymo have suggested 2017 or 2018 is more realistic. 'Paint it black' Te s l a ' s d i s e n gagement report said four prototypes drove a total of 880km during the third quarter of 2016, experiencing 182 disengage-

ments - the equivalent of one every 4.8 kilometres. Tesla logged the miles primarily to develop a publicly posted video, set to the Rolling Stones song "Paint It Black," of the driver's seat perspective in a car where a person does not have to put their hands on the wheel or feet on the pedals. The video promoted how

Tesla was shipping cars with advanced sensors that will be activated in the future. The company already is gathering tens of millions of kilometres of realworld data when owners engage the current Autopilot feature, which can control steering and speed but is not sophisticated enough to make the cars self-driving from the regulatory

perspective. The California Department of Motor Vehicles has been working for several years on regulations that will govern how the technology can be rolled out to the public when companies believe testing shows it is ready.
