Grand entrance taking shape The Swakopmund branch of Metro Cash & Carry was destroyed by a fire early on Monday. An adacent business, Klimas Glass, was also affected when a garage on the premises caught fire. The fire broke out between 03:00 and 04:00. The Swakopmund Fire Brigade fought for three hours to bring the fire under control. Swakopmund's fire chief Adri Goosen said yesterday an investigation into the cause of the fire will start today. Late yesterday the fire brigade was still at the scene to extinguish “hot spots where the smouldering ruins
again flared up to flames. It was clear yesterday that the remains of the building where Metro has been conducting business for many years has to be demolished, as the damage is simply too big. The fire yesterday morning brought back
the memories of a similar fire last year which gutted the Dolphin Pharmacy in Swakopmund's central business district. It also reminds citizens of the old saying; fire is a patient servant, but a fearful master and that every caution should be taken to reduce fire risk.
Build Together takes tough stance on poor performers Beneficiaries of the Build Together Scheme at Swakopmund who are dragging feet in completing construction of their low-cost houses, are given twelve months to being complete construction. Those who do not comply risk their incomplete houses repossessed by the Swakopmund local authority and redistributed to the next batch of people qualifying for the Build Together Scheme. This decision was made public by the Swakopmund Town Council on Wednesday. The Department of Community Development Services will be meeting with current beneficiaries on the issue in the foreseeable future.
People who risk losing their houses if they fail this twelve months deadline are those who are employed. The argument is there is a n u rg e n t n e e d f o r affordable housing and when a person is employed he can do more
to complete his/her house. Unemployed people whose homes are also incomplete fall under the same risk group, but alternative ways will be found to accommodate these people to complete their houses, it was said.

The most successful Internal Audit organisations are not only prepared to help mitigate the risk of these advanced technologies, but are leveraging the very same tools to execute their work in a more effective manner. Andrew McPherson, PwC Global Governance Risk Compliance (GRC) and Internal Audit Leader, says: "Internal Auditors are now expected to have a point of view on new technologies and to be able to provide va-
luable advice on how to embrace innovation while considering how it might shift the organisation's risk profile and impact its day-to-day operations." According to PwC's survey, only 14% of Internal Audit functions are advanced in their technology adoption (known as 'Evolvers'). Surprisingly, Evolvers are not just found in large organisations or in regulated industries. They span industries, company sizes and geographies, suggesting that organisations can overcome stereotypical techno-logy barriers of budget and size. While Evolvers are a small group, they set the example: nearly half (46%) of Internal Audit functions are following Evolvers' technology adoption, but at a slower pace ('Followers'). The remaining 37% of Internal Audit functions lag in technology adoption and are considered 'Observers'.
Potters House church shows Swakopmunders the true meaning of Easter Sharlien Tjambari The Potters House Church in Swakopmund celebrated it's ninth year of existence this year. They celebrated the occasion with a street procession on Saturday. According to Pastor Harold Booysen of Potters House, the procession was held to remind people of the true meaning of Easter. The church noticed that people do not know the true meaning of Easter
anymore: the time that Jesus was crucified and hung to the cross. Booysen explained nowadays people think Easter is only about giving Easter eggs, which is not the case. The procession started at 10:00 from Shoprite
up to the Namib Primary School. It was demonstrated how Jesus was beaten while he was carrying the cross up to the mountain of Gol-gotha. The group later gave life changing testimonies in Mondesa.

Stricken Japanese fishing vessel moved by 100 metres as tug tries to pull it to the deep At the time of going to press yesterday afternoon the salvage tug SA Amandla was preparing for a third attempt to pull the stricken Japanese tuna long liner, Fukuseki Maru, off the rocks where it ran aground on 21 March near Cape Cross. In the first attempt over the weekend SA Amandla managed to pull the stricken vessel astern [backwards] for an estimated one hundred metres. A second attempt failed. A towline is attached to the Fukuseki Maru's stern and she is pulled astern (backwards). The work window to pull the vessel off the rocks is limited to the high tide which is currently around 03:00 and again late afternoon (18:00). “We maintain tension on the towline during low tide to ensure Fukuseki Maru remains in every new position as she is pulled off the rocks. We work slowly and plan every next move carefully. We are also looking at every possible option to
reduce the vessel's weight”, explained a source close to the salvage. Mr. Paul van der Merwe of Walvis Bay Diving & Launch confirmed yesterday attempts to reduce the vessel's weight. He cautioned however, that it is too early to speculate on whether the vessel would be successfully re-floated. He said there were various factors at play and it is too early to make a prediction as to whether the vessel would be successfully refloated. “We do our best and we want to see this vessel refloated, and at the moment we are working very hard for a positive outcome”, said van der Merwe.

2 million hours worked without any loss time injuries
Workers on the port terminal on reclaimed land project in the port of Walvis Bay celebrated two million man hours worked without loss time injuries last week. This is an impeccable achievement for work safety and serves as an example to all other industries. Namibian and Chinese workers were proud of this achievement, as eventually was it not for these workers committed to total safety, this could not have been achieved.

Nama people a no show at annual reparation walk and genocide tributes Sharlien Tjambari The organisers of the annual Ovaherero, Ovambanderu and Nama reparation walk are left disappointed over the poor turnout of people to the event over the Easter weekend at Swakopmund. According to a member of the organising committee no Nama respresentatives were present and equally a very poor turnout of Ovaherero, Ovambanderu were recorded. The event was centered around the Swakopmund memorial park. This event, every year pays tribute to those who lost their lives in the concentration camp at Swakopmund during the 1904/1905 Herero Revolt and the subsequent genocide of the Ovaherero, Ovambanderu and Nama in the three years after the revolt. A reparation walk is also scheduled for the event each year to create public awareness of the genocide. “The event didn't go well this year. The people didn't show up in big numbers as expected. The Nama community didn't show up at all. This is a bad sign, one of the committee members said on condition of anonymity. He thanked those people who attended the event.
This year's event marked the 114th year since the infamous extermination order by Von Trotha in 1904. During the 1904-1907 period genocide as many as 100 000 Ovaherero and 10 000 Nama people lost their lives at the hands of German troops, starvation and many were enslaved on farms where they were mistreated and worked to death, it is believed. A systematic poisoning of water wells by German troops saw many people losing their lives. One of the highlights of the event over the weekend was the paramount chief of the Ovaherero Chief Vekuii Rukoro who paid tribute to those who lost their lives.

Please explain this to the Namibian public
Don’t adjust your watch on Sunday! With Sunday, 1 April approaching, Namibians are reminded to not adjust their watches to winter time, as this is no more in existence. Between 1994 and 2017 Namibia changed between summer time and winter time on every first Sunday of April. This is now something of the past. Sunday is also April Fool's Day and someone might just convince you Namibia still has winter time. Remember the joke will be upon you. Olle Eriksson Namibia would actually belong to time zone GMT+1 (like Angola and Central Europe). Then the sun would go up one hour earlier, and the kids would be safe. However, business wants to have the same time as South Africa. The GMT+2 longitude is close to Pretoria. Money rules. Robin Tyson MTC was the only one who didn't get the message seemingly Piet A. Reader urges Namport to explain - Wood debate is on and public wants to know Dear Sir,
The central and northern coastline of Namibia received downpours early on Monday morning. Areas between Henties Bay and Swakopmund received heavy downpour. Also in Kramersdorf in Swakopmund itself where it is believed heavy rains occurred. Walvis Bay also received rain. A reader who says he was inspired on Monday morning by the cloud formations send us this picture taken from the Yacht Club.
it is several weeks now that wood is offloaded at the Botswana Dry Port in 5th Street in Walvis Bay by Zambian registered trucks. The wood is then re-loaded in containers, if I draw the correct inference. For me as a member of the public it would be very interesting to know where the wood is coming from, what type of wood it is, and where it is going to? Certainly the Botswana Dry Port must in some way connect with the port of Walvis Bay. Albeit, maybe for Namport to explain to the public what is going on. The wood debate in public is on, and information is power. I don’t want to jump to conclusions as to the origin of the wood and whether what we see is legal or illegal, but I would really appreciate it if Namport can explain to the public what is going on. Thank you for the space in your esteemed newspaper.

Walvis Bay municipality says waste disposal site ready to dispose of asbestos roofing from Arandis Sharlien Tjambari The water, waste and environmental health department of the Municipality of Walvis Bay confirmed recently it would be responsible for the disposal of all asbestos roof sheets, which the Arandis Town Council will be removing from close to 2 000 houses in Arandis. The number of sheets that would be removed amounts to several tens of thousands of sheets. Asbestos roofing poses a health hazard, hence the project to remove all asbestos roofing on Arandis houses over the course of the next three years. A major stakeholder in the project is Rio Tinto Rรถssing Uranium which after a comprehensive study identified the presence of asbestos as a risk factor when it comes to the eventual closure of the mine. Caty Sheya from the Public Relations Department of the Municipality of Walvis Bay confirmed the local authority's inspector of hazardous waste is
aware of the Arandis Roofing Project. The project team at Arandis were also made aware of the health concerns, but also proper procedures needed for removing the asbestos roof sheets. The asbestos roofing will be replaced with zinc-aluminium sheets, Shey further explained. "A contractor is preparing a proposal for the disposal of the asbestos roofs to Council. The Contractor's proposal will include all disposal aspects from start to finish and will then be brought to our hazardous waste facility where enough space for such disposal is available", said
Sheya. All the asbestos sheets will be placed in a bunker at the waste site and encapsulated in concrete. The Walvis Bay waste landfill is a regional waste landfill and monthly receives several categories of waste from other towns in the region, including medical waste which is also disposed of by inciner a t i o n . S t a ff a r e trained at the handling of the different categories of waste. In the case of the asbestos, proper procedures are in place to safely dispose of the materials. When contacted by namib times, the Su-
perintendent: Corporate Communications for Rรถssing, Alwyn Lubbe, indicated the Mine is yet to make a public statement on the matter.
The dangers of asbestos cannot be underestimated Asbestos is a type of silicate mineral that was commonly used in house construction all throughout the 20th century. It became popular during the start of the 20th century and was used in many different types of building projects until 1998. Before the 1970's, there was very little research about asbestos, and it wasn't until the end of the century that people realised the harmful effects of asbestos. When conclusive research studies were revealed, it was found that asbestos was quite toxic to human health and could lead to a plethora of health issues.

Brave Warriors beat Lesotho Vitapi Ngaruka and Benson Shilongo scored in the second half to complete a comprehensive comeback from the Brave Warriors for their 2-1 over Lesotho in a thrilling international friendly match, played at the Sam Nujoma stadium last Tuesday night. A game played in front of a very good crowd attendance, Lesotho took the lead on the 44 minute mark by Sera Motebang. Namibian defender Vitapi Ngaruka, rose the highest to meet a corner kick and head home the equalizer on 64 minutes, before Benson Shilongo buried the winner on 80 minutes. The Brave Warriors started the match with three new starters in Tura Magic, midfielder Romeo Kasume, and defenders, Aprocius Petrus from Eleven Arrows and Hubert Mingeri from Life Fighters respectively. While Kasume struggled to find his feet earlier in the game, Petrus and Mingeri connected well with play, adding numbers in attack when necessary. The entertaining game saw Lesotho draw first blood on 44 minutes thanks to their top striker Sera Motebang, who beat the Namibian defenders with a high ball played through before leaving goalkeeper Max MBA Eva in his wake to score in an open net. Captain Ronald Ketjijere and Dynamo Fredericks fought hard in midfield, while Deon Hotto had his trademark runs down the left, all the while Absalom Iimbondi tried his best to link up with striker Benson Shilongo. At the start of the second half, Kasume was replaced by club-mate Itamunua Keimuine as

the host looked to get back into it. It took them about 15 minutes to do so, as Vitapi Ngaruka met a Iimbondi corner to make it 1-1 on the night, much to the appreciation to those who packed the stands at the majestic venue. Lesotho then seemed to be playing for a draw before Shilongo capitalized on a quick Namibian free kick to stamp the ball home from close range to make it 2-1, a lead the host could have added on. Both sides made several changes to the playing personnel in the friendly match, as they both are preparing for COSAFA 2017, to be held in South Africa from 27 May to 07 June, and the resumption of the 2019 AFCON qualifiers in September. Stand in coach, Ronnie Kanalelo dedicated the match to head coach Ricardo Mannetti, who was absent due to family bereavement and was also impressed with the team's determination. “The new boys started growing in confidence as the game went on, and in the end, we also had to make changes to change the game. The team showed character today, it's not easy coming back from a goal down at home, and they succeeded and won. We dedicate this win to coach Mannetti, whose family have been struck by tragedy and we keep him in our prayers”, Kanalelo said after the match.
