Handwashing Vital to End Hepatitis E Outbreak The Hepatitis E outbreak in Namibia is ongoing, and the weekly situation reports indicate that the Hepatitis E virus is still infecting new people weekly. Handwashing is an important and low-cost intervention that will help to end the Hepatitis E outbreak. While the provision of piped water and sanitation facilities are needed, simple interventions such as building and using a Tippy Tap provide an immediate and low cost solution in areas where access to water is limited. More information about how to build a Tippy Tap can be found in the attached document. The U.S. Embassy Namibia joined the Ministry of Health and Social Services
(MoHSS) in increasing awareness for Global Handwashing Day during a recent visit to the Oshana and Omusati Region where ten community-based antiretroviral (ART) sites were opened on October 17. During the visit, U.S. Ambassador to Namibia Lisa Johnson, the Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Bernard Haufiku, and Ministry of Health and Social Services Permanent Secretary, Ben Nangombe each took a moment to wash their hands using a Tippy Tap. “The U.S. Embassy in

Global Handwashing Day is celebrated annually on October 15. It is a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. Global Handwashing Day is an opportunity to design, test, and replicate creative ways to encourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times.

Tourists don’t sleep or dine in Government offices...... Floris Steenkamp Namibians must take collective responsibility along with the Namibian Government to turn visitors into investors. “They must come as tourists and leave as [potential] investors”, says the Minister of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development, Tjekero Tweya. He made this statement during his keynote address at the official opening of the 2018 Erongo Business and Tourism Expo. “Government is not the only partner. When visitors come to Namibia they don't sleep in Government offices. They don't dine in Government offices. They sleep in hotels and guesthouses and they dine in restaurants”, he said. Adding Namibians must treat tourists with respect. “Good customer service is a way of showing that respect. Small deeds make a huge difference collectively. We must be a country where investors wish to invest”, the Minister explained. “Leave a positive impression in the minds of our visitors so that they want to return as investors”, concluded Minister Tweya.
To market and position Namibia as a visitors and investment destination is not only Government’s responsibility

In Agriculture women play a pivotal role as it is women in most instances who plant, toil the land, harvest and raising animals and also care for the daily livelihood of the children and men. Touching on the issue of gender based violence, she expressed concern over the increase of gender based violence against women and children. Also other social evils committed against women and children which include human trafficking, forced prostitution, child marriages, baby dumping and abductions and killings. “As a government we remain committed to ensure appropriate legal instruments are put in place to protect people particularly a g a i n s t g e n d e rbased, violence against children and trafficking in persons.

“Victims of abuse should speak up” Nghiitwikwa urged the public. Victims need to cooperate with the authorities so that these perpetrators can be stopped. “Communities should support victims to
come forward. Make it possible for the law to take its course”, Nghiitwikwa said. Adding the high rate of victims withdrawing cases against perpetrators are also a huge concern.

Ten months jail time for thugs who broke into tourist's car
Caught red handed illegally dumping waste Pictures emerged over the weekend of a Walvis Bay resident simply dumping his household waste behind the Narraville stadium in the dunes. The driver of this SUV was caught red handed on Saturday doing his weekly dumping and contributing to Walvis Bay's general problem with dumping. A member of the public who took these photos told namib times the people dumping are not residents of the area where the dumping takes place. She went on to say: “The dumpers come with cars full of household rubbish as well as building rubble.” Another woman told the namib times in a telephone interview yesterday morning: “Our area is becoming an eye-sore and when the wind blows, the rubbish are swept back onto the neighbourhood. Our children can't even play in those dunes anymore.” This vehicle is believed to be linked to the dumping incident. The registration number was handed to the Walvis Bay municipal traffic department for further investigation.

You do the crime, you do the time. The message is clear now that crimes against tourists and other visitors to Namibia will no longer be tolerated. You are guaranteed of a prison sentence if convicted. The three thugs, who were recently found guilty of breaking into a South African tourist's vehicle parked next to the lagoon in Kovambo Nujoma Drive in Walvis Bay, were on Friday sent to jail for ten months. There was no option of a fine. Immanuel Junior (28), Ian Harding (26) and Herold Ipinge (29) were served swift justice, as the break-in occurred less than a month ago. The prison sentences follows only weeks after another man was sent to jail for six months for snatching a tourist's back pack in Walvis Bay's central business district. Crimes against tourists will hurt Namibia's international image as a visitor-friendly country. The tourism sector is also one of the biggest employers in the country and a catalyst for both local- and overseas investment and can simply not be compromised by criminals. Adding in most instances people are amazed by the country's small population and also the fact that the country is peaceful, politically stable, has a solid judiciary, reliable banking sector, a state-of-the art ICT and telecommunication system and a well-developed road infrastructure that links Namibia's port and dry ports to SADC economies
and also the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, explained Minister Tweya, in contrast to these “priceless” features by which he sells of Namibia, he must also admit to investors that processes in Namibia does not happen overnight. “Why waste time in a country where it takes 66 days to register a company if you can do business in a country where it takes six hours to register a company”, the Minister asked. “Of all the systems we manage, civil servants are worst.
We as leaders need to be accountable for the entities we are heading. We must stop the blame game and make our systems accountable. We as leaders are not in charge. We are not hands-on. We are our own worst enemy”, said Tweya. The Minister explained wherever he travelled in Africa and beyond investors are sitting with lucrative offers from countries across the globe. These investors need to make decisions and their motives are quick returns.
“Why would they waste time by having to deal with a country where it takes 66 days to register a country?” The Minister then called upon all Namibians to change the narrative over Namibia and investors choosing Namibia as their investment destination. He urged Namibians to stop calling investors names like thieves or crooks. He urged Namibians to talk positive about Namibia and for Namibians to increase service delivery at all levels.
