Namibia makes end Spring has arrived to winter time Farewell winter time. Namibians at 02:00 on Sunday will adjust their watches forward by one hour from winter time to summer time. This would be the last time to do so, as Namibia officially abolished winter time and would in the future stay at summer time which is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2).

The majority of Namibians in 2016 favoured summer time as the standard time for the country throughout the year and a bill was passed by both Houses of Parliament recently to replace the current Namibian Time Act which made provision since 1994 for summer time and winter time.
A four year old girl was run over by a drunk driver in Kuisebmond’s Sitrien Street on Wednesday afternoon. The girl, Shariqua Vania Fredericks, was rushed to the Welwitschia Private Hospital in a serious condition and sadly passed away shortly after being admitted. The driver, identified as 33-year old Tomas Isak drove a Mazda sevenseater under the influence of alcohol and he also did not have a driving license. He lost control of the vehicle in Sitrien Street and ran over Fredericks where she stood on the pavement with another young child. Izak was arrested and charged with culpable homicide, drunken driving and driving a vehicle without a valid driving license. Police reports suggest he already made a first appearance in the Walvis Bay magistrates court to face the mentioned three charges. Erwin Leuschner of the namib times Swakop office reports: The driver of a Nissan NP200, who was seriously injured during a partial head-on collision with a bus on Tuesday evening on the outskirts of Walvis Bay, has been transferred to a Windhoek hospital in a stable condition. The driver of the bus sustained minor injuries. The accident occurred on Tuesday evening at about 18:40 on the B2 highway between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. Initial reports indicate that it was a partial head-on collision between the pick-up and a bus of Langer Heinrich Mine. Fortunately there were no other passengers in both vehicles. After the collision the bus veered off the road and crashed into some palm trees on the side of the road. The bus came to a standstill at the embankment. The road was blocked for several hours and members of the Walvis Bay Fire Brigade hat to use Jaws of Life to extricate the driver of the pick-up. The driver sustained fractures in both the left and right forearm, a lower leg fracture and a thigh fracture. He was initially admitted to the Walvis Bay State hospital in a critical but stable condition and was shortly thereafter transported to Windhoek for orthopaedic surgery.

Swakopmund is rather Fire brigade has hands bloodied and beaten at full with roof fires the moment - SRA Erwin Leuschner
Poor Swakopmund is rather bloodied and beaten at the moment. We have had two shocking attacks on elderly people resulting in three deaths and another terrible fire in the middle of town, (the 5th in about 35 years). Sincere sympathy goes to all businesses, which suffered from the fire but especially to the family members of those who died, as we are all part of the whole and we feel and understand the pain they have suffered. As a result of these tragedies, our community has united against the brutal atrocities and the weakness of the law, and protests and petitions have been organised. They must be supported. But each of us now needs a more realistic approach to our personal safety. Walk around your home on the outside. Check your windows and ask yourself how you would get in if you did not have a key. Look at low walls which offer access to your roof or second story. Ask your agile younger children or good neighbours to 'break in' to your home and you will soon realise your weak areas. Be wise and take the trouble to ensure your safety. At a good meeting initiated by Police Warrant Officer Ileni Shapumba, with Neighbourhood Watch, and well sup-ported by
the public, the following points were highlighted: #Swakopmund has reduced police numbers because of budgetary constraints on recruitment. # There is a lack of municipal control of car guards, taxis and taxi numbers... Swakopmund licences for taxis were limited to 300 but Windhoek registered taxis are being run here, which means that we have a surplus of these members looking for business in our town. # Out of date by-laws prevent the municipality from controlling beggars and aggressive hawkers #It was strongly recommended that all workers be screened and profiled before employment and copies of their ID documents made. #Alarm systems should be upgraded # Neighbourhood Watch, which does such good work in our town, needs more members. Probably one of the strongest points made was that neighbourhood communities must look after themselves. We should all have a WhatsApp group with the numbers of our neigh-
Swakopmund Office
bours on our phones. We should report any suspicious movements or lurkers; we should inform our neighbours when we are going to be away. Knowledge is power and we are often told that prevention is the key to our safety. The time to ensure this, is now. Driving through Swakopmund one so often sees a naive tourist surrounded by a group of would-be hawkers, who are harassing them for a sale. This is simply not safe, we know that, but if we stop and say something we are viciously abused by the hawkers and very often, perceived as racist by perhaps the tourist, and others. It is a difficult situation and one wonders if these tourists, who want to be friendly, rather than badmannered, are warned by their accommodation centres and given advice on how to handle these situations, with no eyecontact, no conversation etc. Swakopmunders, take care. Follow the expert advice given and be safe. Be vigilant; look after yourself, your neighbour and therefore your community.
The Swakopmund Fire brigade had a busy Wednesday morning after they had to extinguish two fires which broke out in the roofs of buildings in town. Fortunately, no injuries were reported nor major destruction as was seen last week when the Dolphin Pharmacy was destroyed in a fire. The first incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the roof of a house at an old age home located in Vineta. According to fire chief Adri Goosen, the fire started after a geyser located in the roof exploded and resulting in an electric short circuit. The fire brigade was at the scene within minutes and extinguished the fire. The second incident occurred during midday in an apartment complex, also in Vineta. It is close to the Private School Swakopmund. A contractor was busy burning off old paint from outer wooden structures of the roof. In the process, the structure caught fire. Workers noticed smoke billowing from the roof. The fire brigade was called to the scene and found a ceiling inside one of the apartments smoldering.

Application of car guard policy now critical Erwin Leuschner
In an attempt to find a prompt solution to the issue of car guards in Swakopmund, the Police Public Relations Committee (PPRC) decided to fast-track its implementation of a policy developed particularly to deal with car guards and how the proper control of car guards can curb crime. This was announced this week during the PPRC meeting. The issue surrounding little or no control over car guards in Swakopmund has been a concern for many years. Currently, anybody in possession of a reflective jacket
can be a car guard. Whilst many car guards have been in the business for many years and are earning an honest living, the lack of control is exploited by criminals too. These bad elements
act as car guards, to get an opportunity to harass people and steal whenever possible. "It is usually the newcomers who harass people and who result in bona fide car guards getting a bad
name. During this recent meeting specific questions were raised over the car guard policy. The policy was approved by the Swak o p m u n d To w n Council in March 2016, but implementation lacks. The policy contains specific rules for car guards and requires them to register by filling in a form and thereafter receive a specific identification tag. "When I contacted the Municipality about a form car guards are required to fill out, we
were informed that a form does not yet exist. Why does it take so long to draw up a form?", PPRC Chairperson Anett Kรถtting asked. The municipal car guard policy was drawn up after the Swakopmund traffic department in 2016 launched an investigation into the activities of car guards in town. During this investigation, it was determined having car guards in town increased the number of theft from motor vehicles.
Instead of reducing crime, car guards actually added to the pro-blem. "When they made enough money for the day, the car guards leave. They don't have replacements and nobody knows when and where the next car guard is. The investigation also determined car guards engage in activities, like reading newspapers, instead of paying attention to the surroundings to spot potential criminals. There were also complaints of car guards consuming alcohol
and making matters uncomfortable for the public. The fundamental concern identified by the study was many car guards actually do not understand what their exact role is. In an attempt to address these concerns, Council in March 2016 decided the operations of existing car guards are not properly managed. The policy was developed and put in place, but the problem with car guards persists.

Reckless driving by drunken drivers a nightmare to residents of Masilo street in Mondesa Sharlien Tjambari
Residents living on Masilo Street in Mondesa in Swakopmund say they are living in fear at night, especially between 23:00 and 03:00, because of vehicles which frequently crash through their boundary walls. To make matters worse, these reckless drivers often drive off without taking responsibility for the damage or even inquire if anyone was injured. The owner of a house on erf 1771 Masilo Street, Rosina Witbooi expressed her utter dismay this week over the fact her boundary wall was already hit by vehicles ten times. The damage and repair costs are considerable, leave alone the safety hazard. According to Witbooi on Saturday morning, at around 02:00, she was again woken by a loud sound she knows now all too well now can be nothing other than a car crash. When she ran outside to investigate she noticed her boundary wall, made of wooden pallets, was hit by a car, “I couldn't get the registration number of the car, because the driver sped off the moment he or she spotted me. It is now the tenth time that this is happening. The boundary fence is made of pallet wood and when cars hit the structures it is straight through into my yard”. Witbooi continues: “lucky enough there was a big rock on the ground which prevented the car from hitting the main house, after it crashed through the boundary wall”. According to Witbooi the problem is caused by the number of bars/shebeens which are situated in that area. Her house is no exception. Four of her neighbours' boundary walls were also hit by cars on several occasions in the past. “A car hit the boundary wall of one of my neighbour one day and the vehicle went straight into a ghetto that was in its path. Luckily no one was hurt, but this will cause a tragedy one day”, predicted Witbooi. A man whose house is on erf 1699 chose to remain anonymous, but said he is tired of rebuilding his boundary wall every other month. The costs of repairing his boundary wall is always for his account and the culprits always drive off without apologising or take responsibility for the damages. This man alleges he wrote a letter to the former Chief Executive Officer of the Swakopmund municipality, Eckhart Demasius, in 2015 requesting the Swakopmund Municipality to come up with a solution. Today, two years down the line the problem persists. He placed old tires near the stop sign at the street corner and thought it might be the solution to his problem. “The drivers drive like lunatics. They are always drunk. I know this because I stopped a few in the past and they smel-led of alcohol. Even if you stand here for a few more minutes, you will observe how reck-less people drive on this road, said the man. Witbooi is highly concerned over the safety of their children who like to play outside. “Every day we live in fear, and all we want is for the municipality to put a speed bump or barriers in place to avoid cars from speeding. Will the municipality only react when a tragedy occurs? The Swakopmund Municipality was contacted for comment on Monday, but at the time of going to press a response was yet to come.

Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) - a subsidary of the Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group - officially launced the new look of its craft beer, Camelthorn this week NBL Senior Brand Manager: Premium Portfolio, Claudia Opperman: "With the growth of the craft beer segment in South Africa and Namibia we identified Camelthorn as a unique opportunity to be part of this exciting category. More importantly, we felt that we have the credentials to participate in the craft beer segment based on numerous factors which includes: NBL's background of brewing authenticity and love for real beer; positive consumer perceptions around our brewing ethos and history of great quality pure beer; our ability to brew small batch craft liquids, and the opportunity granted to
us to build on the Camelthorn story that began in 2008. Camelthorn also provides NBL brewers with the opportunity to express their creative sides, through experimenting and bringing to life new exciting liquid innovations. These reasons, we believe, give NBL the credibility to authentically play in this space." Craft brewing in Namibia, started way back in 2008 when Jörg Finkeldey, the
then CEO of Camelthorn Brewing Company started the company together with Kleopas Asino, the production assistant at this small premium brewer in Windhoek. Camelthorn Brewing Company was the first independent craft brewery in Namibia. According to Opperman, the brand, unfortunately, struggled due to the small market in the country. Initially the company started by bre-
wing five types of beer, but eventually had to scale it down, due to the market challenges. Opperman: "Although the Camelthorn Brewing Company produced world class beer strictly according to the traditional German and International brewing style, the consumer market was not big enough in Namibia at the time, and unfortunately the brand struggled, which led to the brand and trade-marks having been put up for sale.
With NBL's passion for brewing and for beer, and as a force for good, NBL completely took over Camelthorn Brewing Company and its assets in March 2014. Managing Director for NBL South Africa, John Fitzgerald, who was also at the launch of the new look describes Camelthorn – 'a really Namibia Craft beer' - as an authentic experience that will appeal to the down-to-earth beer consumer, who is looking for interesting choices amongst
a variety beer styles and taste profiles. Fitzgerald: "Camelthorn is a quirky, weathered, crafted beer brand that doesn't take itself too seriously and as a result is naturally cool, authentic and unpretentious. Camelthorn will initially be available in two liquids, a Helles Crafted Lager that has been expertly brewed with the finest Saphir Hops for a fruity, spicy, refreshing and easy-drinking taste and a filtered Weiss, which is brewed with Lemon drop hops to deliver a beer
with low bitterness and refreshing herbal citrus notes.” According to Opperman, Camelthorn is mainly available at local pubs, restaurants, hotels and events, as well as at clubs and selected shebeens in Katutura. Opperman: "We identified the need for a new look for this special beer, as NBL's way of celebrating Camelthorn's survival through challenging times, whilst remaining one of the preferred craft beers in Namibia and South Africa."

Swakopmund Montessori Academy receives new Pc’s Photo by Erwin Leuschner
Erwin Leuschner
Learners at the Montessori Primary School in Swakopmund now have three additional personal computers (PC's) to assist with research and other tasks relating to their school work – thanks to a generous donation by the accounting firm BDO. The symbolic hand-over of the new equipment at the school took recently. Nikki Gantz, principal of the school, also known as the Swakopmund Montessori Academy, was very happy about the new equipment, as it will be of great assistance for the young ones. This is especially the case at Montessori since the school has a unique learning program: Each child has his or her own curriculum and therefore learns at his or her own pace – no one lags behind. This unique system enables fast-learning children to move ahead with their studies, whilst others get a better grasp of difficult subjects if the need arises to slow down
somewhat. The school started out in 2016 with 19 learners. The number has more than doubled in 2017, as the school now has 40 learners ranging from Grade 1 up to Grade 5. "The school will eventually go up to Grade 7," Gantz explained. Speaking during the hand-over, Arné Celliers of BDO, said these technological aids will be utilized a lot, seeing as the school is very interactive. “We encourage children to do their own research. If a learner for instance asks about an earthquake we encourage him to research it and then tell us more about it," Gantz continued.

Three Desert Elephant bulls on the shooting list Erwin Leuschner
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) recently issued three hunting permits for Desert Elephant bulls in the Ugab river basin – one problem bull tag and two trophy bull tags. Environmentalists are up in arms and fear for the future of the iconic bull "Voortrekker". "If it is true it's very sad but what can we do?" asked Uis resident Basil Calitz when contacted by namib times. Calitz regularly drives into the Ugab river where desertadapted Elephants still roam freely. "When MET issued hunting permits in 2014 we bought one permit to save the animal. It cost us N$70 000. We do not have the money to do that again," he continued. Namibia is home to one of two Desert Elephant populations in the world. According to the annual report (2016) of Elephant Human Relations Aid (EHRA) the Namibian Desert Elephant population stood at 62 – this includes both populations found in the Ugab as well as the Huab river. The entire population is unfortunately declining year-on-year.
"Of specific concern is the loss of breeding females and most other adult females being of old age. Seven out of ten new born calves and three adult females died in 2016," it states. EHRA's Operations Director and Founder, Johannes Haasbroek, was not available for comment. In an attempt to save the elephants an online petition titled "Stop ALL Hunting of Rare Desert Elephants" has been launched and by yesterday had reached more than 43 000 signatures. The petition states that the hunting permits were issued with "no alternatives taken into consideration with regard to problem animals." "They will just be shot." The petition initiated by Earth Organisation Namibia calls on the Minister of MET Poham-
ba Shifeta to proclaim a moratorium on the hunting of Desert Elephants and launch a forensic audit of the population and all associated bull elephants. Earth Organisation Namibia specifically raises questions which criteria MET uses to determine which an animal is indeed a "problem" animal. "There is no specific legal procedure to make this determination," the organisation states. News of the issuing of the hunting permits also made news headlines in South Africa. This is not the first time MET is being criticised for issuing hunting permits of Desert Elephants. The Ministry received heavy backlash in 2014 when the elephant nicknamed "Delta" was shot in a non-trophy hunt. Six permits to hunt Desert
Elephants were issued then. Since the international uproar of the events in 2014 MET has become wary of releasing any documen-tation. The Public Relations Officer of MET, Romeo Muyun-da, did not respond to questions raised by namib times by yester-days the deadline. If the hunting permits were already issued is not yet known. According to EHRA's report the Ugab river population consists of three breeding herds: Mama Africa herd (13 elephants); Guantagab 6 herd (six elephants); and the Ugab Small herd (six elephants). Furthermore, it states that five bulls reside in the Ugab river, two prime breeding bulls (30-35 and 40-45 years of age) and three mature breeding bulls (25-30 years of age).

Second hand book shop invites all book lovers! Residents of the coast only have good words for The Book Shop, a treasure for reading pleasure that opened its doors in Walvis Bay late in 2016. We spoke to Loami Moylan, the owner this week and can say with conviction – if you love reading and you love books then The Book Shop should be on your list of regular spots to visit. The Book Shop has been open since December 2016 and is situated at The Walvis Bay Tourism Centre, on the corner of 5th Road and Union Street. “I have always been a lover of books. I lived in Cape Town and used to spend hours in second hand book shops. After discovering the success of Uncle Spike's book exchange in Windhoek, the need for something similar at the coast was evident”, explained Moylan (pictured right). Adding: “It's simple. We sell second hand books and also work on an exchange basis. This means, you can approach us with books you would like
to exchange and you receive credits in return which can be spent with us. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that we will take all of your books, due to limited space and having to be selective”. What makes the concept work? “Now everyone can read. New books are very expensive these days. At The Book Shop, you are sure to find affordable prices. Prices range from anywhere between N$30 and up”. According to Moylan The Book Shop stocks a little bit of everything. Crime, Mystery, Romance, Drama, Autobiographies, Children's books, Textbooks, Cook books and more. The benefits of reading are too many to mention, she says. It expands the mind, stimulates the imagination, improves vocabulary and spelling and keeps us away from mind numbing activities such as watching reality television. “People on a couch watching other people on a
couch... I think Billy Connolly said that”, Moylan says with a sparkle in the eye. Will books ever die out, we asked her? “Not in this lifetime. An e-reader will never smell as good as a book, and a book's battery will never die”. The Book Shop is open every day from 09:00 to 17:00 and is closed during lunch. Saturdays the book shop is open from 09:00 till 12:00. Be sure to bring cash as there is no card facilities [yet]. “Second hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack” – Virginia Woolf Visit The Book Shop on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thebookshopnamibia/ , pop in to have a look or email loamie@iway.na for more information.

In-fighting tears the Herero-fabric apart Sharlien Tjambari
A local General-Lieutenant of the Red Flag, Omuiingona Uahimisa Kaapehi, this week confessed he is very disappointed in the ongoing in-fighting amongst the Ovaherero communities. The in-fighting suppressed the mood at the recent Red Flag Day at Okahandja. Annually the Ovaherero and the Ovambanderu communities gather at Okahandja to commemorate Red Flag Day. That is on 26 August of every year when Namibia commemorates Heroes Day. Red Flag Day was always in a spirit of unity, as it honoured the Herero's deceased chieftains. Hundreds of people would congregate at the Herero Grave Complex at Okahandja where great Herero leaders are buried. It is the last resting place of Tjamuaha, Maharero, Samuel Maharero and Friedrich Maharero'. According to Kaapehi the first commemoration of the red flag day at Okahandja started in 1923 when the corpse of the late Samuel Maharero was returned to Namibia from Botswana. The last internment at the Complex was in 1989 when Kaimbire Tjamuaha was buried thereafter his death on 15 May of that year. The in-fighting escalated in recent years and factions gathered behind the Paramount Chief of Ovaherero, Vekuii Rukoro's Red Flag Regiment and the other Tjinaani Maharero's followers. The in-fighting is about who was to lit the holy fire and who is to have command over Commando Number One at erf 1755, Nau-Aib. Kaapehi confirmed this year's commemoration was well-organised and well-advertised. “The leader of the Otjikatjamuaha and Maharero Royal Family, Chief Tjipene Keeja, lit the holy fire and called everyone to join him. Some people refused to go there” said Kaapehi. He was left disappointed, as this bears down to a fight for leadership in a people that is supposed to be united. Kaapehi further alleges some people associated with the Apartheid-era counter insurgency unit Koevoet were told by the DTA of Namibia, which transported them to the commemoration in Okahandja, to bring firearms along as there would be a fight. Kaapehi expressed his concerns over incidents like this and said it disturbs the general peace. The in-fighting which he explained first started among the
Ovambanderu and spread to the Ovaherero. “There is no way our traditions and culture can be sustained or allowed to grow, as in-fighting will cause us to fall apart”, added Kaapehi. “Our future is dark right
now. It might even bring us war. If Government intervene and take sides war will come. Government should do something and find a solution to this problem before it is too late”.

NSIF Donates 120 beds to needy school children in Omajete Contributed The Namport Social Investment Fund (NSIF) recently donated double bed banks valued at N$75,546 to the Omatjete Primary School in the Erongo Region. The beds will be used in the school's newly built hostel. The school has 330 learners enrolled of which 120 make use of the community hostel the school introduced in 2007. The community hostel is made up of two classrooms which were converted into sleeping areas to accommodate learners who previously
had to walk more than 40km per day from surrounding villages to attend classes. The one classroom is for the boys and the other for the girls to sleep in. This conversion of classrooms into sleeping areas forced the school to adopt the infamous Platoon System. Fortunately the school managed to raise enough funds and build two hostel blocks which will now accommodate the learners. The learners who are currently on school holidays will come back to a proper sleeping area with a bed of their own as they used
to sleep on mattresses in the community hostel. The donated beds will accommodate all 120 pupils. Speaking at the handover event, Ms Taná Pesat, NSIF Chairperson, said that “the Fund aims to alleviate poverty in societies countrywide as much as possible”. She further added that “investing in the education of the Namibian child was fundamental to the existence of NSIF and encouraged the school management to continue investing in the lives of our children and businesses such as Namport
will always assist as much as possible”. Receiving the donation, Mr Patoko, Principal of Omatjete Primary School, thanked NSIF and said that, “finally our children now have their own beds and as they sleep comfortably they will perform better in school”. This donation does not only ensure the comfort of the learners but according to the principal, the school will no longer have the Platoon System in place as the two classrooms can now be used for their intended purpose.
UNIVERSAL PEACE UPHELD BY A WORLD GOVERNMENT * The world is in greatest need of international peace. Until it is established, mankind will not attain composure and tranquility. It is necessary that the nations and governments organize an international tribunal to which all their disputes and differences shall be referred. The decision of that tribunal shall be final. *He (Bahá'u'lláh) exhorted them (rulers of the world) to peace and international agreement, making it incumbent upon them to establish a board of international arbitration; that from all nations and governments of the world there should be delegates selected for a congress of nations which should constitute a universal arbitral court of justice to settle international disputes. *Warfare and strife will be uprooted; disagreement and dissension pass away and Universal Peace unite the nations and peoples of the world. All mankind will dwell together as one family, blend as the waves of one sea, shine as stars of one firmament and appear as fruits of the same tree. Tale as old as Time ‌ a classic Timeless affair Set under the backdrop of the Narraville night skies, an evening that will surely not ever be forgotten – just like those most picturesque tales. The theme - Beauty and the Beast, the venue - Narraville community hall (for the first time ever), the date August 18, an evening that was to go down in the history of Walvis Bay. Once again De Duine Secondary School showed why they are a force to be reckoned with. Friday the 18th sought for any child's dream to become a reality, their matric farewell. The class of 2017 was indeed treated to a night that could only be found in fairytales and dreams. Their entrance allowed a showcase of sorts with them strutting their stuff on a ramp showcasing all the hard work that went into their evening. From the entrance to the holding area to the enchanting set venue, the matric farewell evening of 2017 was indeed a timeless affair. The atmosphere was atoned by the unique sounds of the Mascato coastal youth choir, Vivian Molauly and a themed dance as it was performed by our one and only Beauty and the Beast. The evening also sought the presence of Miss Namibia first princess, Romilly Mouton and De Duine's own Mr Derick Klazen, Deputy Minister of urban and rural development. Each item on the program was delicately presented by the host with most Mr Joe Blom. An old aged tradition, prom king and prom queen was also decked in class, with Shirley Izaaks and Bongani Karingombe crowned as the Queen - Beauty and the King - Beast of the evening respectively. The school, staff, school board and principal would like to thank the organising committee and all the generous sponsors who made this timeless event a success. More pictures on pages 14 & 15

The new Mercedes-AMG GT R Developed in the "Green Hell" From the world's most demanding racetrack directly onto the road: Never before has Mercedes-AMG packed so much motorsport technology into a production vehicle than into the new AMG GT R. The front-mid-engine concept with transaxle, the twin-turbo V-8 engine rated at 430 kW, the extensively modified suspension, the new aerodynamics and the intelligent lightweight construction lay the foundations for an especially dynamic driving experience. Even from afar, the exclusive "AMG green hell magno" special paintwork leaves no doubt as to the sports car's origin, having spent most of its development time in the "Green Hell" of the Nurburgring racetrack. Wider front and rear wings allow an increased track width for optimum grip and even higher cornering speeds. The new front fascia with active elements, the large rear aerofoil and the new rear fascia with double diffuser enhance aerodynamic efficiency and help ensure optimum grip. The lightweight forged wheels shod with Sports Tyres as standard and are likewise designed for maximum driving dynamics. The same applies to other new features such as the active rearwheel steering, the nine-way adjustable traction control system and the adjustable coil-over suspension with additional electronic control. What is more, the new
AMG Panamericana grille emphasises the unique standing of the AMG GT R. Its characteristic form with vertical fins from the Mercedes-AMG GT3 customer-sport racing car and now features on an AMG production vehicle. Mercedes-AMG continues to grow and is expanding the top end of its product range with the introduction of the new AMG GT R. "Our sports-car and performance brand AMG has its roots in motorsport and, ever since its formation, has repeatedly faced up to the competition on the racetrack. These
genes are particularly prevalent in the new AMG GT R. Boasting a wealth of technological innovations, the new top-of-the-range model is proof of the close collaboration between our constructors of racing cars and roadgoing vehicles," says Selvin Govender, Marketing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars. "With the new AMG GT R, AMG has reached the next level of driving performance. This roadgoing sports car with motorracing genes and innovative technical solutions offers an
ultimate driving experience that allows people to feel AMG’s motorsport origins in every fibre. It combines the driving dynamics of the AMG GT3 racing car with the everyday practicality of the AMG GT. Those with petrol in their veins will be thrilled by the radical longitudinal and lateral acceleration, the precise turn-in, and the sensational grip. AMG has modified all performance-relevant components and linked them together intelligently for maximum driving dynamics," adds Govender.

Namibian Equestrian Federation/NAMEF Last month the Namibian Equestrian Federation/NAMEF held their AGM in the Coastal town of Walvis Bay. Here in some of the highlights of the AGM. Riaan van Rooyen (NAMEF) Presidents Report 2017 Too often one sees ugly reports of corruption and other destructive behaviours in sport. Yet, sport is being portrayed as a bonding opportunity and an opportunity to teach our youth about the positive aspects of sport. All too often administrators do not realise that they do not have their positions because of how important they are, but they have their positions because they are the greatest servants of that sport. And in that I case, I have to compliment the NAMEF committee as they have the wellbeing of the sport at heart and not their own agendas. NAMEF should not be seen as an untouchable, contrary to popular belief in some circles. We are here to serve the FEI affiliated equestrian disciplines, according to the constitution laid out before us. We merely request that all members respect our time, efforts and abilities to try and develop the sport. Our good standing with the FEI, NSC and the NNOC is no secret. Namibia has individuals who are directly involved with the FEI, notably Gigi Mathias who serves on the FEI Officials Working Group on behalf of the all developing Nations in the world. Cord Cordes as FEI expert for the ESEE in Show jumping and directly responsible for the education of the Course builder in Group IX. I will take this opportunity to thank the FEI Solidarity for the continuous assistance and funding received to develop the Equestrian sport. The IT Platform is such a development and will certainly modernize the current registration, show entry, etc. system here in Namibia. Here to manage and run the system will be Tanja Reinhardt together with Kathleen Newton. Our Vision is to modernize and to grow the sport to attain international standards for our athletes. The progress over the last 5 years, since the first hosting of the FEI Level 1 coaches course in 2014, is immense. We have 40 registered coaches with the Namibian Equestrian Coaches Association. For our small community this is no small feat. This in turn does benefit the sport ensuring professionalism and raising the standard of our sport. We have hosted our 2nd FEI 1* Eventing event. The best possible way forward is to ensure the safety and a well-trained horse and rider. This can only be achieved if more Eventing shows are
offered during the year, to hone our athletes to compete at higher levels. It needs to be understood that the guiding rules and regulations from both NAMEF and the FEI need to be respected. It is to safeguard our riders and horses in the long run. Thank you to Shanie Bosch Fourie who was tasked back in 2014 to develop the Group IX passport for all the nations – this has been accomplished and NAMIBIA now has a Group IX passport accepted by the FEI. It should be encouraged that all sport horses should eventually be in the possession of such a passport – this will in due course make border crossings more efficient. Alexandra Rohl (NAMEF) Dressage Report 2017 As NAMEF Dressage representative my aim in this discipline is to get more of our riders involved in Dressage (young and old), as dressage is the basis of our sport. It is also my aim to offer the discipline to all the interested parties and at the same time to accommodate all involved to the best NAMEF can offer. Aims are: · More riders to be interested and to experience the value or satisfaction of real athleticism, this will not improve only the understanding between the horse and rider but also improve all other disciplines, as dressage is the foundation of all. · Riders to sense the feeling of being one with your horse. · Another very important objective is to get our judges further trained to higher levels and most importantly, to develop & Train more judges. (This as you will agree, is not something that will happen overnight) Let us reflect on some primary achievements during the past year. This year we could offer together with the generous support of the FEI our second ESEE – EQUESTRIAN SPORT E D U C AT I V E E V E N T w h i c h i s a N a t i o n a l Education/certification system for National officials in our sport. This model is a seminar was we a) educate and b) certify the various Officials in a NF. The ESEE is based on sharing knowledge and provides Judges alongside coaches, demo riders and also organisers the opportunity to share and benefit from each other's expertise

The Walvis Bay Equestrian Centre is always putting a lot of effort into this event and we have also agreed to open this event up to National test that can be ridden the following day. I would like to ask our riders, to please support this event. We have sent a Dressage team to represent Namibia to the FEI Group IX Inter Africa Nations Cup to Botswana on 28th April 2017. NAMEF's intention or vision for dressage: is to grow our sport. By growth we consider both in rider quantities but also in quality. NAMEF is guided by world FEI directives and the positive input of our riders is always welcome. Should you have any ideas how to improve our sport we ask you to contact us in writing and most important to attend our yearly workshop. It is the duty of each athlete to know and follow the rules at all times. Remember the health of our horses is paramount and safety is also very important. On this note I would like to thank everybody for the positive & professional manner in which we, as a riding community have maintained and contributed to our wonderful EQ. NAMEF stand "humbled" by the true sportsmanship & commitment of all involved and believe that with such a positive attitude, we as a riding community can achieve a higher levels of Dressage. Ute Gebhardt (NAMEF) Show Jumping Report 2017 One of our bigger projects during the past year was the development of our YOG kids. I want to thank the riding community that you all embraced this project and helped our young riders gain the confidence to venture to new heights. I am convinced that, even though only a few received the training by Diane Botes, the spirit these girls displayed, pulled many others along and gave them some motivation to attempt the higher classes as well. Opening up the classes and allowing riders to test the higher levels, has also given the show jumping discipline a great upswing. We now have more athletes participating in the 1.10-1.20 classes which make the sport more exciting for the spectators as well. The first leg of the 2017 FEI WJCH at Nubuamis saw an increase of participants in all 3 Categories. We are very proud that Nadine Flemming received her Certificate of Capability there which she needs to qualify for the YOG. She was also our first rider who managed to qualify herself for the AYG in Algeria next year. This will be the first time that the equestrian sport is included in the African Youth Games. Our other young riders still have the chance to qualify for Algeria in the remaining two legs of the FEI WJCH. The second leg will be at the Kapps Stables in September and the last leg and YOG qualifier will be at the Riverside Equestrian Centre in December. In 2018 Namibia will host the Inter Africa Cup at the Duneside Stud. With this ongoing development of our Sport, we need to try and find a way to achieve some sort of continuity throughout the different levels and ages. Therefore the WBEC will host the first FEI International Children's Classics in October this year. By adding the ChIC we want to give our child riders some exposure already and the opportunity to participate internationally. Hopefully one of them will manage to qualify for the finals in Beijing at the end of this year. Christiane Hass went to South Africa for a FEI course and was promoted to FEI Level 1 Jumping Judge. Sandra Cox will host a Stewards and Jumping Seminar before the Riverside Show in December and we are hoping to promote some more of our valued judges to the next level then. Olaf Falk (NAMEF) Eventing Delegate Report 2016/7 A very exciting year it has been. A big highlight was the second FEI CIC* hosted by the RGO. Here I want to mention the absolute commitment and enthusiasm shown by the Otjiwarongo Riding Community and of course to the Falk Family who has shown – and continues to show – unending enthusiasm. Since last year the NAMEF Africa Shield Eventing teams have been to 2 foreign events, namely Shongweni in SA and Azuluna in Zim and we had 2 teams representing NAMEF at this year's Africa Eventing Shield in Otjiwarongo. The teams gained incredible experience and are now a force to be reckoned with. The success of the teams is in no small part due to Heidi and Douglas who have continued to support Namibian eventing by returning on a regular basis for more clinics. Steffi Kreiner should get a special mention here for never losing enthusiasm and always trying to get the clinics and the riders together in one place. The NAMEF team was joined by 10 individual riders in Shongweni . Much knowledge and experience was also gained by these individuals and we have to thank the South Africans for lending the Namibians horses for this event. This was also the case for the 1st leg of the Africa Shield Eventing 2017 at Azaluna in Zimbabwe. Clearly Namibia has put its mark on the Eventing sport in Southern Africa and we are definitely on the map. Most important to me is the safety aspect, and thankfully we had no serious incidents for horses nor riders at any of our Eventing shows or clinics. A quick breakdown on the events hosted for this past year: May 2017 RVS 8 entries, 4 clear rounds and 2 eliminations July 2017 GCW/Claratal 35 entries, 9 clear rounds and 9 eliminations August 2017 RGO 1* 28 entries, 14 clear rounds and 4 eliminations On Officials development Christiane Hass has shown her commitment to the Namibian Riding community as a show jumping judge, but is now also qualified as an FEI 1* Steward for Eventing. Annette Freyer and Manfred Falk both attended the Level 1 eventing course in Mazabuka this year and are also both now FEI listed national TD and XC course designer respectively. Alex Röhl, since last year, has qualified as 1* and 2* star eventing judge ESEE through the FEI Solidarity program our very first Eventing ESEE will be held in Swakopmund in November 2017. This is indeed exciting news and will further ensure the upgrading of Namibian eventing. I urge ALL coaches and aspiring officials to attend this event. This is an opportunity not to be missed. Riaan van Rooyen – President Cord Cordes – Vice Chair Hendrik Roschlau – Treasurer Gigi Mathias – Secretary General Ute Gebhardt – Show Jumping delegate Olaf Falk – Eventing delegate Alexandra Rohl – Dressage delegate Ruth Lowe – Coaches Association delegate

Hangana Hake Run & Ride Tekken 7 has taken the The Lucky Star Marathon, now known as the Hangana Hake Run & Ride, has been in existence since the late 90s and is one of the oldest road running events in Namibia. It started out as the Dolphin Marathon in the 80s. The marathon is a favourite among local and international athletes as the race follows the unique and scenic route between the coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, with the sea breeze from the cold Atlantic Ocean on the one side, and the majestic sand dunes of the oldest desert in the world, the Namib Desert, on the other side. The marathon serves as a qualifier for the renowned Two Oceans and Comrades marathons in South Africa. The Hangana Hake Run & Ride also offers a half marathon and 10km fun run. In 2015 cycling categories were added to the event to offer the same excitement and diversity to cycling enthusiasts, ranging from the Namibian Cycling Federation sanctioned 105km road race to an off-road 21km Fat bike desert race traversing the sand dunes in the vicinity of Walvis Bay. Other cycling events include a 21km Mountain bike and 5km kiddie's race. To ensure a fun-filled family outing on race day, the event is incorporated into the annual "Walvisfees" (translated as Whale Festival) hosted in Walvis Bay. All events finish at the Jan Wilken Stadium where the festival is hosted, incorporating food and drink stalls, live music shows, a kiddies play park and lots more family entertainment for the entire weekend. NESA is the governing sports body that facilitates and coordinates e-Sports activities within Namibia. Committed towards the promotion and development of competitive gaming, this non-profit organization strives towards establishing e-Sports as a locally valued sports code with respected international rankings. As a globally popularized means of entertainment, electronic gaming has made its way to the personal computer (PC), console (Playstation, X-Box, etc.) and various mobile platforms. A NESA competition, made possible by event sponsors, allows casual and competitive gamers to participate in a variety of platforms and games. Local e-Sports leagues and tournaments are complimented by NESA's endorsement of private competitions. NamLAN – LAN of the Brave is Namibia's biggest e-Sports event with its traditional annual appearance since 2008. Affiliation with the International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) allows for the proud Namibian representation and participation in the international arena. NESA continues to build quality relationships both locally and internationally as gaming continues to grow as a sport in Namibia. Tekken 7 has taken the e-Sports community by storm and is set to hit Namibia this September. The competition will be a battle of the country's top e-Sport players in the Tekken category. e-Sports are a form of competition that is facilitated by electronic systems, particularly video games. The market globally has a revenue of U$493M and viewership of 71.5M through streaming and other digital services.
