Namport loses out after drop in oil price

inside

Erwin Leuschner

Since the sharp decline in oil price oil rigs have been anchoring in Walvis Bay. The revenue generated from this is not making up for the loss in cargo volume though The cargo volumes and imports through the port of Walvis Bay to Angola have dropped significantly since the international oil price took a drastic plunge. “We are losing out on income big time. The oil rigs lying in the harbour bring in revenue, but they don't make up for the loss,” Port Engineer Elzevier Gelderbloem said yesterday in Walvis Bay. Although Namport Angola,” the port au- Uirab announced that has been negatively thority remains con- the new Container Teraffected by the sheer fident that things will minal development is decline in cargo volu- bounce back. city of the new container terminal will take us well beyond the year 2025,” Port Engineer G elderbloem added. Uirab didn't mention exact figures. He did say though that cargo volumes have declined which lead to a decrease in revenue, but at the same time operating costs are increasing. But it is not only Namport that is experiencing this predicament. “The global container market is growing at a slow pace. As a port we deal with a lot of economies along the West Coast of Africa, more especially the oil reliant economy of Angola which has been seriously affected,” Uirab said. The CEO continued saying that even the economy in Oshikango is struggling, as the town is not “what it

was five years ago.” Gelderbloem added that the port of Walvis Bay is one of the biggest natural anchorage areas in the world, which is turning out to be favourable during this time. It is for this reason that the port authority is generating revenue through dry stacking. “This in turn is creating a lot of spin-offs for the town. Another man's misfortune is another's fortune,” Gelderbloem continued. While Namport is continuously upgrading and expanding the port of Walvis Bay and Lüderitzbucht and is also pursuing the development of the massive SADC Gateway Terminal, it came as a surprise that Uirab announced that the envisaged port at Cape Fria in the Skeleton Coast “has been put on

hold until further notice.” “Government did a prefeasibility study a few years ago. We went out on tender to do a feasibility study, but we were requested to stop that project, because of the current scaling down in costs,” Uirab said. Concerning the new Container Terminal Development Uirab went into great detail saying that the project is progressing well. To date in respect of the construction of this project Namport has spent N$567 million in Namibia. This amounts to 16.48% of the total envisaged costs. “We promised to spend at least 30% of the costs in Namibia and we are now halfway there,” Uirab said. The CEO added that the terminal will be commissioned in early 2018.

On Monday evening, a 55-year-old man was involved in a train accident at the Walvis Bay railway station. According to a family member the man took his wife to the railway station to see her off. During his attempt to leave the train after he greeted her, he slipped and fell on the railway line. He was admitted to the Wel-wistchia hospital but on Wednesday afternoon it was decided to fly him to a Windhoek medical facility. Unfortunately he passed away before his arrival. No comment was received from TransNamib with regard to the accident before going to print. “When we got to the train station we were so heartbroken that we did not even ask or looked around where the train operator was to question whether they made sure that no-one was near the train when it started to move,” the family member commented.

Continued from page 2 This latest development sounds the death knell for the current restaurant at the airport, The Flying Coffee Pot, of which the owners declined to part-take when the Namibia Airports Company invited tenders for essential services at the Walvis Bay Air-port late last year. Currently, all pas-senger services at the Walvis Bay Airport is managed from a tem-porary structure in the form of a giant tented structure, from where the Flying Coffee Pot currently operates. It is only fair to expect the Flying Coffee Shop will close shop once the new terminal building is completed and the temporary structure becoming obsolete. Mr Oosthuizen also indicated there are in-terests for a second Mugg & Bean outlet at Walvis Bay apart from the Walvis Bay Airport, one outlet at Swakopmund, one outlet at Keetmanshoop and one in Namibia's north. There are three existing outlets in Windhoek and according to Oosthuizen more outlets are expected to open shop in the capital in the foreseeable future.

EBHN reinforces its reputation as a world-class ship repair company Elgin Brown & Hamer (EBH) Namibia has fulfilled its strategic objective of attaining the international OHSAS 18001 certification, further enhancing its standing as a market leader in the ship repair sector. As such, the company has been rewarded for what has been a year of hard work and commitment during which all departments 'pulled together' to achieve this latest milestone. “Attaining the OHSAS 18 001 certification was an intense process but - true to form our staff worked as a team with a common vision: to demonstrate to our clients that nothing less than world class standards is good enough at EBH Namibia,” says Hannes Uys, CEO of EBH Namibia. The company received the certification in December 2015, a little over a year after it became ISO 9001certified. For Tim Kolisi, Q H S S E ( Q u a l i t y, Health, Safety, Security and Environment) Manager at EBH Namibia, benchmarking against global standards in quality and safety systems is paramount for any company wanting to compete successfully in the international maritime industry. “Achieving the OHSAS certificate is great news for EBH Namibia, as it demonstrates to our clients in a tangible way that we are indeed a worldclass organisation, dedicated to the health and safety of our people. It is further proof of our commitment to quality and safety, as well as continuous im-

provement in every aspect of our business,” says Kolisi. OHSAS (Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series) is a widely recognised international health and safety management system which was updated in 2007. For EBH Namibia, the OHSAS standard provides the company with a frame-work in which to more accurately and proactively identify inherent health and safety risks, reduce the potential for accidents, become legally compliant and to improve overall operational performance. “Attaining the OHSAS certification has placed the company in a stronger position to respond pro-actively to any potentially risky conditions or situations. It will ensure optimal and effective risk management, which will help to prevent unexpected costs for injury claims or disaster recovery,” says Kolisi. “Moreover, adhering to OHSAS standards is an effective way of reducing sickness, absenteeism and staff turnover, as well as boosting morale. It also helps to identify skills shortages and gaps, which in turn leads to

fewer incidents or avoidable accidents on site.” Successful implementation of the OH-SAS standards required the involvement and support of each department, co-ordinated by top management, Kolisi explains. The process involved a close 'gap analysis' – in order for the company to measure current methodologies as compared to OHSAS standards – and thereafter intensive training, internal auditing processes and ongoing management reviews in respect of audit outcomes and future objectives.

NA split over genocide descendants The National Assembly (NA) was yesterday split in two as some Members of Parliament (MPs) could not reach consensus on whether direct descendants of the 1908 German genocide were represented in reparation negotiations between Namibia and Germany. Members of the NA differed on views over the genocide reparation negotiations between Namibia and Germany, after the president of the DTA of Namibia, McHenry Venaani stated that people who were direct descendants or affected by the genocide were excluded from the negotiation process between the two countries. Venaani also said he did not have a problem with the appointment of long-serving Ambassador Zed Ngavirue as the special envoy to lead deliberations with the German government, however, those affected by the genocide were not included nor represented in the negotiations. He further sought clarity on why opposition parties were not included in the reparation negotiations. The official opposition leader also questioned whether it was wrong for Government to partner with affected communities and opposition parties. A furious Utoni Nujoma, in the NA on a Swapo Party ticket, then spoke in defence of Ngavirue, saying the ambassador who was appointed as a special envoy, was also part of the affected communities and thus is directly representing Government and the affected communities. Another Swapo Party MP Ida Hoffman, who also made her contribution to the debate, said if Namibia can challenge Germany on the issue of genocide, then it should also challenge South Africa for the apartheid regime in Namibia. No maize shortage but price worrisome - NAB Consumers do not have to be concerned about maize shortages in the country, but affordability of this staple food could be worrisome, the Namibia Agronomic Board (NAB) says. NAB Chief Executive Officer Christof Brock gave Nampa this assurance on the sideline of the NAB's first Board meeting for 2016 here on Thursday. “We are in a normal situation now. Maize will always be on the shelves but the price and affordability is the tough one,” he noted, making reference to the increase in maize prices last month. The prices of not only maize meal but also of wheat flour, pasta and mahangu increased last month - just five weeks after the previous increase on 25 January 2016. The new prices became effective on 29 February. The main national grain miller, Namib Mills announced a 16 per cent increase in the price of maize meal and an increase of eight per cent for wheat flour. Pasta prices went up by 11 per cent and mahangu prices by nine per cent. A 10-kilogramme bag of Super Top Score maize meal increased from N$98.83 to about N$115.86 at local shops and retailers. Namibia needs about 100 000 to 200 000 tonnes of maize per annum. The country only produced about 30 000 tonnes of irrigation maize, according to predictions issued by the NAB in January this year. About 120 000 tonnes of maize were imported to fill the gap in the market caused by poor rainfall. Meanwhile, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) in its Crop Prospects and Food Situation report for March 2016 warned that maize prices have reached record highs in several countries. The persistent depreciation of South Africa's rand against the US dollar has also supported the upward trend, though a slight strengthening of the rand in February has eased prices. (NAMPA)

Land Grabbing leads to eviction by police Liesl Losper The group of residents in Kuisebmond who temporarily occupied the area in front of !Nara Primary School were evicted by the police yesterday. According to the residents, the police came on Tuesday evening and took out their belongings and put it outside the shacks. “I cried because I was only thinking of my children. Where will we sleep? Sergeant Haikali have seen my tears and he then decided by tomorrow morning I must be out. We help our children with their school work in the warm sun ” one of the residents said. Some of the parents had to start making food for their school children in the open. When we arrived at the scene all their belongings were outside, and they said most of them slept there. Children from the age of four had to help their mothers to take their belongings out and demolish the shacks. A pregnant woman, whose husband is at sea, was instructed to demolish the shack herself. According to this pregnant woman she told the police she cannot do it alone. “They just told me to sit and wait for a police car to take me to the police station, until my husband comes back. My tears are flowing and I have begged them, please only give me a few days after my husband comes back, but they said all of us must leave this place today,” she said. Some residents remarked that they had to go and take their children from school early and left them with friends or family because the parents did not want their children to be confronted by the scene. The police did not demolish the schacks themselves but ordered the residents to leave the property under their supervision. Mr Raymond Pietersen of the Ministry of Works explained to the residents last week that this specific area they want to occupy, belongs to the Ministry of Works and they intend to build a Police Station there. However, some of the residents feel that a police station is not necessary at this stage. Regional Councillor John Nangolo is addressing the situation but could not be reached at the time of going to press.

Eleven killed over Easter Eleven lives were lost over the 2016 Easter weekend, compared to 21 fatalities recorded in the same period last year. The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)'s Deputy InspectorGeneral of Operations, James Tjivikua revealed the positive news at a media briefing on Wednesday. Tjivikua said law enforcement officials have played a vital role in reducing accidents and fatalities during that period this year, by setting up road blocks around the country and constantly patrolling the roads. He noted injuries also decreased, saying 64 accidents were recorded whereby 121 people were injured over the 2016 Easter weekend. He said this is two accidents less compared to 66 accidents reported last year whereby 113 injuries were recorded. (NAMPA)

A three year old with the heart of a lion Erwin Leuschner He smiles. He turns around and his blond hair sparkles in the sunlight. “No,” he says determinedly and then skips off randomly. “Damian, come here please,” mom Roswitha repeats. The three-year-old finally gives in. He runs to his mom and hugs her. A normal family? Not quite. and surprised even the experts. But where do you pick up the pieces after giving everything you have to save your miracle child? “The word 'normal' will never exist in our life anymore. I am not the same person I was four years ago,” Roswitha continues. As Damian plays around the house, he does not look sick at all. But he is a ticking time bomb, the experts told Roswitha. “Maybe we are lucky and nothing happens and he can really be a normal child,” the mom says. She looks around at her child. Hope is written on her face. For his short life Damian has spent more time in hospital and confined to oxygen cables than not. Now Roswitha is making up for lost time. Damian is attending a Kindergarten in Swakopmund, where he is making real friends outside the hospital. He can finally play with other children. “For the first two years of his life he was confined, because of his condition. We have a lot of catching up to do,” Roswitha says. He goes to regular therapy, takes music classes and has a weekly play date. “We Little Damian has the heart of a lion. “I won't be a Rockstar. I will be a legend,” his shirt reads. And he truly are trying to give him a is one and captured the hearts of people all over the normal life as far as possible,” the mom world

For the past three years, Damian Sagner has captured the hearts and minds of many Namibians and people all over the world. “Damian Lionheart” they call him, for he has the will of a lion to survive. Since August 2015, Roswitha and Damian are back in Namibia, and now in Swakopmund. “His heart is mended, but it will never be healed,” the mom says, when namib times visited

her. Since his birth on 13 November in 2012, Damian has had three open heart surgeries. Two in South Africa, and the last one finally in Germany. A team consisting of the best cardiologists in the world operated on the tiny heart for twelve consecutive hours in October 2014. The diagnosis: Full correction. “His plumbing is now in order,” Roswitha smiles. Damian made a full recovery

continues. But even though the operation was a success, Damian will never truly live normal life. Every five to six months he needs a check-up where a specialist looks at his heart. If any small change is noticed, immediate action is necessary. “I am so proud of him. He never complains. He even likes going to the doctor,” Roswitha smiles. Damian was born with an extremely rare heart condition. Experts have told his mother that he truly is a miracle. He should have only lived two weeks, but the little fighter survived anything and everything that was thrown at him. “I realise that he is not the only sick child in Namibia, but he is my only sick child. I will do anything for him

and it is my privilege to be his mom,” Roswitha says. The family has spent everything they ever had to save their child. When the money ran out, Namibians stood together to help where they can. A trust was founded and various fundraising events were hosted. “I am indescribably grateful for everything that has been done for us,” Roswitha says. One such highlight was a fundraising gala dinner that was hosted in Windhoek. At the event a painting of Damian was auctioned – three times. To Roswitha's surprise, the last bidder that bought the painting anonymously gave it to her as a present. “I don't know what to say anymore for everything that was done for us,” she continuous. While the family is

Damian Sagner is now three years old. After the third and last open-heart operation in Germany his heart was mended. So far he has spent much of his childhood in hospital

trying to pick up the pieces of living a life with constant uphill battles for more than three years, Roswitha remains hopeful. She is realistic though. “I just wish that my child will have a normal life. There are people who had similar heart conditions that are now over 30 years old. There is always hope,” she says, while tears stream down her face. “But I want to make his short life as memo-rable as possible.” While she

speaks, Damian stands next to her playing with play dough. In his sparkling eyes you see complete innocence. “Look here,” he says and looks up, while the dough covers his fingers. He runs off, stumbles and falls. He doesn't cry, but instead looks around and laughs. He truly has the heart of a lion. “The Library Ship”on its way to Walvis Bay The MV Logos Hope, operated on behalf of OM Ships International by GBA Ships e.V, a private, non-profit, charitable organisation registered in Germany, docked in Durban on Wednesday, 16 March as part of its cruise around the southern tip of Africa on its way to Libreville, Gabon. The ship will depart from Durban on 2 May and will visit Richards Bay, East London, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town before visiting Walvis Bay from 15 to 28 July. GBA is a German Christian charitable organisation, “Gute Bücher für Alle”, meaning Good Books for All in English. The newly created Logos Hope Experience (which is situated on a deck that was installed into the original ferry's car area) holds up to 800 visitors at any time, with capacity to host an additional 500 in the Hope Theatre and Logos Lounge. This publicly accessible deck offers visitors an introduction to the vessel and the organisation, a book fair featuring over 5 000 different titles of educational and Christian books, a visual presentation called the Journey of Life, which is based on the story of the "Prodigal Son", and the International Cafe. The all-volunteer crew and staff of 400 people, represent over 45 different countries. Unlike the crew during her original use as a car ferry, crew and staff normally join the organisation to live on board for two years as volunteers. OM Ships International is the organisation behind Logos Hope. The Ships Ministry began in 1970 as part of the global Christian training and outreach movement, OM International. Their goal is to bring knowledge, help and hope to the people of the world by supplying vital literature resources, encouraging cross-cultural understanding, training young people for more effective life and service, providing needed relief, and sharing a message of hope in God wherever there is opportunity.

The Minister of ICT, Tjekero Tweya explained that it will also regulate the partnership between citizens, the ministry and its employees in its efforts to enhance productivity and fast-track service delivery consistent with service standards that respond to the needs and aspirations of its citizens. “Based on the recognition by the partners that citizens are at the centre of service delivery as recipients, providers and custodians of public services, the charter is a statement of intent, pledge and a promise of the ministry that enables service beneficiaries to understand what they can expect from us, and forms the basis of engagement between the government, citizens and organs of civil society. It also sets out the roles and responsibilities of the respective directorates and divisions of the ministry with a view to help improve productivity, enhance and fast-track the delivery of services in improving the lives of the people. Tweya said the MICT Customer and Service Charter and its subsequent cascading to individual ministerial directorates was done in terms of section two of the Public Service Act No. 13 of 1995, which defines what public service is. In terms of the Act, a public service for the Republic of Namibia should be impartial and professional in its effective and efficient service to the Government in policy formulation and evaluation and in prompt execution of government policy and directives so as to serve Namibians and promote their welfare and lawful interests. In 1997, the government launched the first ever general principles of the Public Service Charter in line with the African Charter on the values and principles of public service and administration. These principles guide the way every public servant works and they include among others setting clear standards of service that the customer can rea-

sonably expect and provide information about public services in a straight forward and open way that easily be understood among other things.

Agreement to “free” Namibians from “crowded” Zambian jails Namibian citizens serving sentences in Zambian prisons can now be transferred back home to serve the remainder of their sentence on home soil, should they wish to do so. The same principle applies to Zambians incarcerated in Namibia. Danny Beukes I would say that it should be mandatory to move foreigners back to their countries prisons, they are having a holiday here, and it would open up opportunities for more crimes on our soil.

Helicopters above Walvis Bay has residents curious Five helicopters were humming above Walvis Bay yesterday afternoon, prompting phone calls to the newspaper's office. The flying machines were also spotted over Swakopmund later yesterday. namib times made inquiries to the local air traffic circles of the coast and established that these helicopters are part of a tour group of helicopter owners from South Africa travelling part of Namibia on an air-safari. The helicopters entered Namibia from Upington and landed at Keetmanshoop for refuelling and immigration control. The group then flew to Lüderitz, Sossusvlei and arrived in Swakopmund yesterday afternoon. Francois Lottering Its all well and great, but about 6-7 years ago a dude with a foreign registered chopper flew low and slow over some of the islands next to the coast and scared the holy crab out of the birds. Remember to adjust your watches this Sunday Namibians can continue with the standing order of adjusting the time one hour backwards on Sunday 3 April, following a public notice by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration in this regard shortly before the commencement of the Easter long weekend. The Ministry is assessing public opinions and suggestions that were received when the Ministry asked for public input whether to return to the pre-1994 situation where Namibian and South African time were the same throughout the year. Peter Odendaal Yay!...so we can sleep an hour later! The time change is the BEST thing the Swapo Government has ever done!...afterall it places Namibia in the CORRECT geographical time zone ( Central African Time) If there should be an adjustment it should be in summer when we could turn the clocks 1 hour forward to utilize the longer daylight hours! Educators urged to help stop spread of TB amongst school learners Sharlien Tjambari

The Erongo Regional Ministry of Health and Social Services' department commemorated World Tuberculosis (TB) Day in Swakopmund on Wednesday. World TB Day is annually commemorated on 24 March and this year's theme is “Unit to end TB”. The purpose of World TB Day is to create public awareness for TB, a disease which, despite being curable today, still remains a destructive epidemic said the Mayor of Swakopmund Mrs Pauline Nashilundo during the commemoration ceremony. Nashilundo also said TB is still a life threatening problem in Namibia as latest reports showed that Namibia is the fourth worst affected country in the World. According to the Regional Director of Health Mr Jeremiah Nghipundjwa Namibia have consistently been amongst the top ten countries with the highest per capita burden of TB in the world. “In commemorating this day we must be cognisant of the fact that TB is still a

major public health challenge facing the world and Namibia; we therefore use this day to remind ourselves of our responsibilities to the current and future generation It is our collective responsibility to ensure that no Namibians dies of TB,” said Nghipundjwa. He urged all TB field promoters, health workers and lifestyle ambassadors, civil society organisations, private and business sectors to continue working together to reach everyone that needs TB diagnosis, treatment, care and support. The leadership at the Ministry of Health and Social Services remains available to provide guidance but defeating the scourge requires collective input from everyone. According to Nghipundjwa statistics show that in 2015, 1 076 patients had TB in Erongo which was an increase from the 1 039 reported in 2014. A total of 39 patients with drug resistance TB were also reported in 2014. With regard to treatment uptake and outcome Nghipundjwa said 92% of new patients who commenced with TB treatment in 2014 were successfully treated, in 2015 40% of all TB patients were diagnosed

with HIV compared to 42% in 2014. “It is therefore important that all patients diagnosed with TB be tested for HIV or vice versa,” he noted. “We need to ensure that we continue to perform the appropriate tests, administer the correct treatment, provide the necessary support and treatment monitoring, and ensure in the end that all patients are cured,” said Nghipundjwa. “Today we are commemorating this day with learners from different secondary schools because of a higher number of TB cases among the learners. I urge the Director of Education and school principals to give support to the learners and provide necessary information with the help of health workers to stop the spread of TB in schools,” he added. The Ministry of Health and Social Services calls on fellow line ministries, communities, civil society, and the private sector to “Unite to End TB.” The National TB and Leprosy programme (NTLP) and partners are promoting dialogue and collaboration that unites individuals and communities in new ways to end the tuberculosis (TB) epidemic.

Women at the Expo also expressed a strong stance in favour of the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and baby dumping. Namibians need to be sensitised to fight these social evils. Proactively Managing and Mitigating Crisis Before, During and After…. A special two day Master Class to share best practices in maximizing the conditions for crisis avoidance, managing the media and preparing for crisis mitigation and recovery will be held in Walvis Bay on 14 and 15 April at the Othithiya Building (Manica Training Centre), 3rd street east. “With the constant threat of all kinds of crises ranging from natural disasters, technological, workplace violence, industrial accidents and others, every organisation no matter how large or small, needs scientific, operational risk assessments for effective plans such as crisis communication plans. Often companies focus on either risk assessments or crisis communication plans separately; however, both plans are necessary for the successful management of an organisation, because conflict risk management and communication may result in a crisis. Ideally they work in tandem”. Amiso M George and Cornelius B Pratt (2012:31) Case studies in Crisis Communication: International Perspectives on Hits and Misses. New York: Routledge. The Master Class will engage the delegates with both the theory and practice of Disaster Management focus-

sing on issues management and crisis communication. It will follow the outline of the Master Class which was presented at the World Public Relations Forum in Nairobi in November 2015 where delegates shared their own experiences and came up with solutions to the challenges they faced within their own organisations. Dr Chris Skinner who will present the Master Class will share with delegates a paper written based on a doctoral study of the South Durban Basin which is one of the most polluted areas in South Africa. He also works closely with the disaster management team at the Umbogintwini Industrial complex which is the largest chemical manufacturing plant in South Africa. Dr Skinner is the coauthor of the best selling “Handbook of Public Relations” now in its 11th edition as well as “Disaster Management: A guide to issues management and crisis communication.”

Each participant in the workshop will be provided with a copy of the latter together with electronic copies of additional case study material. On the local front, he works closely with the Director of SAC Corporate Communications, Cecilia Pretorius who is herself a seasoned Chartered Public Relations Practitioner, based in Windhoek. She has 30 years of experience in public relations and corporate communications mainly in the local banking, agricultural and energy sector. Speaking from experience she indicated that often insufficient attention is given to crisis avoidance and mitigation with a lack of synergy between the public relations, risk management and strategic planning divisions/departments in the public and private sector. “Avoidance of the fact that a disaster on any level could occur, will not prevent it from striking when least expected. Taking two days out from the usual daily

operations, is an investment no organisation cannot afford not to make as due diligence and preparedness can avert potential loss of lives, revenue, not to mention reputational issues and stakeholder confidence”. While visiting Walvis Bay to meet with some large reputable organisations and companies, she expressed her sincere appreciation with regard to the positive response received so far. “All bigger and smaller organisations and businesses are welcome and I am confident that the Master Class will be packed to the brim, setting the scene for many such training interventions to be held at the coast in future, especially taking into consideration the fact that the Erongo Region is the industrial hub of the economy.” The Disaster Management master class supports the goal of

the National Disaster Risk Management Policy, being to contribute to the attainment of sustainable development in line with Namibia's Vision 2030 through strengthening of national capacities to reduce risk and build community resilience to disasters. It also supports the approach of the Namibian National Disaster Risk Management Policy which involves

a shift away from a perception that disasters are rare occurrences managed by emergency rescue and support services. This approach requires a significantly improved capacity for early warning and for tracking, monitoring and disseminating information on phenomena and activities that trigger disaster events. It calls for improved institutional

emergency preparedness and response capacity at local, regional and national levels and implies an increased commitment to strategies to prevent disasters and mitigate their severity. For any additional information and/or to register, please contact Cecilia at: 081 142 0300 or by email at: ceciliapretorius @gmail.com.

April is Autism Month The World Health Organisation commemorates only three diseases on specific days. One of these conditions is autism, a fact which indicates the impact this condition is expected to have on society. The 2nd of April is Autism Day and the whole month is used world wide to build awareness and disseminate information. We will host a get together on 2April at 17:30 at Bits 'n Pizza in Swakopmund town centre. Cindy and Lee Roberts of Bits 'n Pizza were so kind to donate a certain amount per pizza sold and this for the whole of April, since the whole April is Autism month. Furthermore a barometer will be shown at the entrance of Bits 'n Pizza to show the donations day-to-day. Blue is the colour of Autism, hence the decoration will be blue. Anyone want to join the event should were something blue or were an 'Autism Awareness badge' which is available for Nad 3 at Peter's Antiques. Ludwig and Mirana of Peter's Antiques are the coastal representatives of Autism Namibia and can be contacted at 081 309 4094/ 081 321 7571 or petersantiques1983 @yahoo.com for any related questions on the event or Autism in general.

With the adoption of a front facing 9mp camera internally mounted onto the rear view mirror, and the complementing reversing camera, drivers can now capture front or rear facing HD photographs and videos which can be previewed on the vehicle's infotainment system, prior to sharing socially. Using the vehicle's voice recognition command system, drivers can then also dictate a message to accompany the images being shared socially as status updates or comments. Four new functions can be accessed using the steering wheel controls: 1. Camera select - switches between the front and rear cameras 1. S# - share to Twitter function 2. I - share to Instagram 3. S - share to Snapchat The vehicle's infotainment system allows for the social media accounts to be set up initially, allowing photographs and text to be shared on the fly without lifting one's hands off the steering wheels. The system requires a mobile device to be paired for internet connectivity via Bluetooth. The technology was developed after several studies demonstrated the risk associated with mobile phone usage whilst driving, with specific reference to social media engagement. Tested extensively in the US, the system has proven invaluable in ensuring that drivers do not take their hands off the wheel but rather remain focused on driving, first and foremost, whilst being able to share images and videos of their adventures safely with social fans and followers. Project Chief engineer Mr Ai Lai remarks "With the growing trend of dash cam capturing and social media usage whilst driving, we looked for a way to be able to do this in a much safer and more responsible way." Available from the 1st of April, the system will be standard on all vehicles sold in Southern Africa, as part of the Subaru April Fools Imaginative campaign.

Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell Vehicle becomes power plant for a home Researchers at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands engineered and installed an electrical outlet socket on a Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell Vehicle that converts the zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) into a power plant when standing still. In close collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company and other commercial partners, their conversion gave the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell a capacity of 10 kW, sufficient to power on average ten homes. With the electrical outlet socket in place, the innovators modified the car in such a way that it can distribute its electricity to the grid or directly to a house, for instance to complement the available wind and solar power. "The researchers led by professor Ad van Wijk at TU Delft are the first ones in Europe who have managed to make the next big step towards a more sustainable future based on fuel cell cars as a clean source of energy," says Frank Meijer, head of Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle at Hyundai Motor Europe. "Fuel cell cars produce electricity, heat and clean water out of hydrogen that can be used in homes, schools and offices and we are particularly proud that the first car to provide that kind of clean energy is a Hyundai Motor ix35 Fuel Cell." Professor Ad van Wijk's research group is called Future Energy Systems and belongs to the Process & Energy department at the faculty of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering (3mE). Their work is focused on integrated system applications of the fuel cell, as for example in the programme 'Car as Power Plant'. The idea is that car owners use their vehicles for transportation only 5% of the time. Unlike a fossil fuel powered car, a fuel

cell vehicle, when parked, can produce electricity from hydrogen - cleaner and more efficiently than the current electricity system and with useful "waste" products heat and fresh water. These applications will be researched and tested in the next stage of the programme. The project is part of the Greenvillage intiative (http://www.thegreenvi llage.org/) of the TU Delft to promote innovative systems for a sustainable future. ix35 Fuel Cell Vehicle success continues in United Kingdom And in the United Kingdom the success story of Hyundai Motor's hydrogen venture continues as Aberdeen City Council and Co-wheels car club added four ix35 Fuel Cells to their fleet of models. The cars will be made available to the public through the car club on a pay-as-yougo basis and to Aberdeen businesses for trial. This order takes the nationwide total of Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell vehicles to 15 with more than 250 across Europe. Those vehicles in the UK are already in use by Johnson Matthey, TfL, Air Products, ITM Power and Anglo American. Hyundai Motor UK CEO, Tony Whitehorn said: "As more and more cities throughout the UK begin to improve their hydrogen facilities, we're seeing greater demand for our ix35 Fuel Cell. It's fantastic to be a part of Aberdeen's hydrogen development in this way, especially because the cars are going to be used on a day-to-day basis by members of the

public. We want them to experience all the reasons why we think hydrogen is the way forward in terms of usability, refinement and ultra-clean motoring." Aberdeen City Councillor Barney Crockett, who also chairs the European hydrogen association HyER, added: "Aberdeen is developing a reputation as a 'can-do' hydrogen city. With these cars, we are taking things to the next level, moving ever closer to becoming a worldleading renewables city and securing a hydrogen economy in Aberdeen, presenting tangible opportunities to the energy industry." In addition, as part of the UK's Hydrogen Week (March 14-18, 2016), the governmentbacked London Hydrogen Network Expansion project (LHNE) of which Hyundai Motor is a partner broke two new distance records for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles driving in the ix35 Fuel Cell. The first record was for the longest journey in the UK on a single tank of hydrogen - travelling 653 km - and the second was for the longest continuous journey made in a fuel cell vehicle by travelling 9 811 km over 50 laps of the M25 highway in six days. The ix35 Fuel Cell is the first hydrogen car to go on sale to the public in the UK. It has a range of 525 km but emits only water and has a refueling time to match a combustion-engined car. LHNE, co-funded by Innovate UK, was set up n 2012 to create the

UK's first hydrogen-powered transport system across Lndon and the South East. It has delivered a new publiclyaccessible, state-of-theart fastfill Air Products SmartFuel速 hydrogen refuelling station and upgraded a second to the requisite 700 bar pressure status.

The LHNE partners are now- keen for the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology to accelerate in the UK, but one of the main challenges is the limited coverage of refuelling stations to support the vehicles. There are currently 6 stations in the UK, including the 2 public

Air Products SmartFuel速 stations in London. Funding is in place for at least 12 to be operational in England and Scotland within the next 12 months. A leader in fuel cell technology. The ix35 Fuel Cell is the orld's first mass-produced and commercially available

fuel cell electric vehicle. FCEVs are not a newly developed technology for Hyundai. The ix35 Fuel Cell is already the fourth generation of FCEV, following the Santa Fe FCEV in 2000, the Tucson FCEV in 2004 and the ix35 FCEV in 2012.

Only 10 years old, Zander Everson competed against grown up men twice his age and accumulated enough points to be the overall winner in his class for 2015. Zander started his racing career at the age of 4

with a 90cc Honda quadbike. He competed on the mini quad track at the old Dirt Oval track near the dump site and later start racing his 200cc Yamaha Blaster on the oval track at the newly constructed Desert Raceway outside town. Zander raced his 450cc Honda for the first time at the end of 2014 at the final National Leg of the year and continue to take part in the National competition for 2015 at Walvis Bay Desert Raceway as well as at the Otjiwarongo Oval track.

Walvis Bay Golf Club News This weekend is the Bank Windhoek sponsored day (“dankie Jaans”) and the format is individual stableford. Sages this Sunday, so all the toppies please note. All must please remember that the time changes on Sunday so don't be late or early (haha). Next weekend is the WB Fitment Centre with the format to follow. On the 16th is Koot's day (“dankie vriend”) and on the 23rd is the monthly medal still sponsored, thanks to JJ and team. On the 30th is Angolink, thanks to Morne. Angolink is the warm-up weekend for 7 May which is our match against Tsumeb, and we need to retain the trophy. As you are all aware, Karin will finish up as green keeper at the end of April. Please be assured that we are on top of the situation and we are confident that we will get the right person for the job with no effects on the upkeep of the course. Gunter will be supplying a new screen for the handicapping system and this will be up and running by the weekend, thanks Gunter. Welcome

back Bossie, “mooi om vir jou weer by die klub te sien.” We are also not sure if there are other members on the Red Cross list, if so, please let us know. Congratulations to Anton (Steves) and Danie on having a wedding in the family, “hoop daar is nog geld oor vir 'n rondte op die baan.” Word is out that Deon Grunschloss will be our invited guest at the club next Wednesday. We look forward with anticipation to see him back, the money outcome will be relayed later. We held our sponsors evening last night and although not too many attended it was a success. Our club is very spoilt regarding sponsors as we have very few 'dry' Saturday afternoons and a lot of them carry a great deal of prizes. We will always be indebted to the sponsors and many thanks to them for their continued support.
