“Designed for readers from all backgrounds and levels of experience, this beautiful book offers . . . a rich array of stories, scientific perspectives and ways of dealing with challenges that arise on the path. You will find in these pages a precious invitation to inhabit the happiness, love and freedom of your own awakened heart.” —Tara Brach, Author of Radical Acceptance and True Refuge

ave you ever wondered how you can make decisions that create a meaningful life for you? Lama Tsomo did, which is why she “bothered” with meditation in the first place, and why millions of others have found these timeless practices helpful too. Lama Tsomo’s journey with meditation took her to the Himalayas and other points in Asia, but it was her real journey deep into Tibetan culture and spiritual practices that was transformative. This volume and the next book in the Ancient Wisdom For Our Times series are updated versions of the previously published Why Is the Dalai Lama Always Smiling? Here, in Why Bother?, Lama Tsomo shares her own story and her teacher’s story, along with an overview of the life of the Buddha. She offers insights into Tibetan Buddhist basics, providing essential context for the rest of the series, which takes you on the journey into the principles and practices Lama Tsomo has learned from her Tibetan teacher— presented here Westerner to Westerner.

“In today’s fast-paced, high tech world, the struggle to find truth and meaning requires a special kind of teacher. Thank goodness for the arrival of Lama Tsomo, whose insights and instruction could not have come at a better time.” —Van Jones, CEO of REFORM Alliance, host of Redemption Project and The Van Jones Show on CNN

Lama Tsomo is an American Buddhist lama, author, and co-founder of the Namchak Foundation and Namchak Retreat Ranch. Lama Tsomo holds an M.A. in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Jungian studies. She is author of Why Is the Dalai Lama Always Smiling?, and co-author, with Reverend Matthew Fox, of The Lotus & The Rose: A Conversation Between Tibetan Buddhism & Mystical Christianity.

“Lama Tsomo’s conversational style and clarity, open-mindedness yet dedication all contribute to a book that will meet the needs of a great many who seek to deepen their inner life but are unsure how.” —Arthur Zajonc, Ph.D., Past President of Mind and Life Institute

T

he idea for this series grew out of an introductory course on Tibetan Buddhism that I wryly titled Why Bother? (now the wry title of this first volume). Since I figured we Westerners don’t automatically know why we should bother, I might as well come right out with it. As I taught the course, I assigned the occasional reading, but never found the particular book I was looking for. So I finally decided to write it myself! I’d originally envisioned just a small pamphlet, a study guide and reference for the course, but as I kept thinking of more and more things to introduce, and helpful hints from my experience, it naturally evolved into something larger, into what is now a sequenced series. My aspiration is that you benefit somehow from these writings, even if you don’t agree with all the concepts, or decide, for now, to tread only part of this whole path. That’s enough to make it worthwhile for me to write it and you to read it. So take the book in small sips, turning the concepts over in your mind, and if you feel inclined, trying out the practices in the next book, and later books, for yourself. And in the process . . . enjoy.
