Lang voordat museumarchitectuur populair was als toeristische trekpleister, droomden architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage en museumdirecteur Hendrik Enno van Gelder van een spraakmakend museumgebouw. Een gebouw waar bezoekers zich thuis zouden voelen, en waar de kunst ultiem tot z’n recht zou komen. In 1935 werd deze droom werkelijkheid met de opening van een nieuw museum voor moderne en toegepaste kunst in Den Haag. Hoewel Berlage in 1934 stierf en de oplevering dus niet meemaakte, heeft hij samen met Van Gelder een voorbeeld geschapen voor vele musea die later ontstonden. Dit rijk geïllustreerde boek neemt de oorspronkelijke ideeën van architect en directeur als uitgangspunt en laat zien hoe ze tot op de dag van vandaag een belangrijke rol spelen in de beleving van Kunstmuseum Den Haag. Ruim 150 foto’s en een schat aan historisch materiaal brengen het gebouw uitvoerig in beeld. Ook de ruimtes die normaal gesloten blijven voor het publiek. In 1935, their dream came true with the opening of a new museum for modern and applied art in The Hague. Although Berlage died in 1934 and thus did not live to see the museum completed, he and Van Gelder set an example for many later creations.
