PSAN alleges favoritism in NPSC SUBMITS 6-PT DEMAND for IMPLEMENTATION
DIMAPUR, SEP 8 (NPN): Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland (PSAN) have raised strong objection to the current marking system practised by NPSC members in favour of certain candidates at the viva-voce exams. Stating this in a press note, PSAN core team took serious note of the alleged practice of “favouritism” and “manipulation” by NPSC members in the viva-voce marking system of NPSC (non-technical) examination result 2015. PASN alleged that the average marks of some candidates from the same tribe as that of NPSC members were much higher than candidates whose tribe were not NPSC members. Further, on an average, the candidates who scored above 70 (out of 75) were also much higher among candidates who had their people from their tribe as NPSC members, PSAN stated. In the light of this matter, PSAN core team members held an emergency meeting on September 5, wherein the house unani-
mously agreed to seek for urgent need revamp of the NPSC system. The house resolved therefore resolved “to oppose ‘tooth and nail’ against unfairness in the whole process of NPSC examination system”, PSAN stated in a press note. Referring to the RTI reply, PSAN went on to point out that most of the candidates who had scored lesser than their fellow candidates in mains exams were “unethically awarded generous marks” and secured better posts. However, PSAN said those candidates, who scored better marks in mains exam, were “whitewashed” off their NCS & NPS dreams by NPSC interview board members by awarding “unreasonably low marks”. The huge differences in awarding marks to the candidates were evident when some candidates scored as high as 74.12 out of 75 and some scored as low as 29 out of the same total mark, PSAN said. Citing an instance, PSAN said a particular candidate who scored 5th highest mark in mains

Informing this through a press note, SDO (Trans) Mokokchung, Er. Shilu assured that the department was working on a war footing to restore power supply at the earliest. SDO has appealed to all consumers to bear with the inconvenience since the restoration has been delayed due to long span of the conductor (about 900 metre).

exam (404) was awarded only 32 marks out of 75 in the viva-voce, thereby denying him of his deserving NCS/NPS post. PSAN also pointed out discrepancies in the 2015 NPSC (non-technical) examination result where some general category candidates, whose marks were lower than backward tribe (BT) candidates, managed to get selected. Even some, whose marks were lower than grade-II posts, got selected for grade-I post, PSAN claimed. In this regard, PSAN said NPSC was answerable not only to those meritorious candidates whom it had whitewashed off the merit list, but also to God for its grave injustice. Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland has put forth a six-point demand before the government for prompt necessary action, “in lieu of the obvious and crystal-clear rampant corrupt practices and manipulation in the whole process of NPSC examination system”. 1. Minimize the viva marks from the current 75

Lohe accused the NPF led-DAN government of pocketing development funds during its 15-year rule. “During the last 15 years of NPF’s rule, our protective law as ILP, Land Revenue Act of 1978, notification on rules for indigenous inhabitants of 1977 have been flaunted”, he said. Not only these, according to Lohe, the government introduced new rules on Nagaland Petroleum and Natural Gas rules of 2012 and NSDZ and thereby extended legal rights to the outsiders. (Cont’d on p-7)

ICPA warns govt of stir against move to ground 132 AI pilots, 430 crew members
With the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) threatening to ground 132 pilots and 430 cabin crew members of Air India for skipping alcohol test, the Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA), union of the erstwhile Indian Airlines’ pilots, has threatened to launch a protest against a senior official of the DGCA if the regulator acts against any pilot. The ICPA says Air India or its crew members are not at fault as the violation happened due to lack of clarity on rules. “We have come to know DGCA is on the verge of suspending licences of 132 pilots and 400 cabin crew for no fault of theirs. This is a clear case of vindication (sic) by (DGCA official). If any one of our innocent member pilot becomes a victim of DGCA for no fault of the pilot, we will resort to a full fledged protest,” ICPA letter issued by its general secretary Captain T Praveen Keerthi said. (Inset) Rev. Dr. Shiwoto Assumi. Section of the congregation. Correspondent Kohima, Sep 8 (NPN): Three-day spiritual awakening crusade organised by the Sumi Christian Fellowship Kohima (SCFK) got underway at NBCC Convention Centre Kohima, Friday evening. Delivering the message on the inaugural evening of the crusade, Rev. Dr.Shiwoto Assumi, pastor NCRC(Sumi) Purana Bazar, Dimapur termed the coming together of Sumi believers from different denominations as God’s doing. Making references to Psalms 6 and 2 Chronicles 7, the pastor asked the
Sumis whether Sumi tribe as a whole was “ailing” and whether or not the Sumis are really “people of God.” Reverend said that the Sumis have been blessed with rich culture, tradition, and Sumi dialect and also known for their truth and honesty. He however said that without God’s intervention, these qualities may fade into oblivion. He said that many preachers have prophesised God’s greater plan for the Sumi tribe if the Sumis ask for forgiveness and reconcile among themselves. He termed the gathering of believers as not only
a fellowship but God’s work in healing all manner of ailments among the Sumis towards a Christ-like transformation. Stating that the name of Jesus was a name above all names, the preacher asked the gathering in what manner the Nagas today are actually using the name of Jesus Christ even after declaring the slogan “Nagaland for Christ.” Delivering the welcome address, Y.Kikheto Sema (IAS) Chairman Planning Committee said that Sumi people have had their due share of shortcomings in the past and the present and the Crusade
was a small step towards ushering a complete change in the socio-spiritual aspects of lives among the Sumi tribe. Kikheto said that though Sumi believers in Kohima were divided through denominations, yet they believed in “One God” and “One Salvation” and it was through this design that the Sumi Christian Fellowship Kohima was formed. Stating that Sumi people have erred before God, he said that the time has come for the tribe to love and forgive one another in the name of God to heal the sickness that has been long possessed. He said that this initiative was a step towards unifying the believers, he called upon other believers beyond Kohima belonging to different denominations to do the same as “Sumi Christians.” “Only when we unite and move together as Christians then only we can ask our National workers to unite,” he remarked. assured of medical bill to cover any kind of disease to every citizen of Nagaland. Hitting out at the NPF led-DAN government on its 15 years misrule, the NPCC president asked the Naga people to rise up for a change. He also announced that Congress will kick off state wide campaign with the objective to remove the RSS ideology of communalism from Nagaland that includes BJP wing and its alliance. Therie said that Naga were honest, truthful and courageous, however, the
trend of corrupt practices of the “regional government” asking commission for any contract works has shamed the Naga people. He also attacked the NPF over rampant back door appointments, bad road, lack of infrastructure, etc. On the financial position, Therie said during Congress rule in Nagaland (2003) the state budget was only Rs. 6,000 crores whereas at present it has gone upto Rs. 15,000 crores and therefore questioned the NPF-led DAN government where all the money had gone. NPCC treasurer and exminister, Seyiekuolie in his address claimed that 80% of the rural people wanted Congress to come back to power due to misrule and corruption by the present government. NPCC vice president Khriedi Theünuo said that the development activities taken up by the BJP government at
the centre were started and initiated by the Congress government. NPCC general secretary and ex-MLA NPCC Medokul Sophie explained the corrupt practice indulged by the present government by citing example of road condition in the state capital and commercial hub, Dimapur. Former minister and former NPCC president I. Imkong attacked the BJP government at the centre of failing to delivering its election manifesto- to create million jobs for the youth, to bring back black money and others. NPCC general secretary Jonathan and working president NPCC Ayanba Aonok also addressed the gathering. DIMAPUR: Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) has once again appealed to the Technical Education department and the state government to immediately release the college/tuition fee of the three MBBS students who were sent last year. In a press note, ENCSU president, M. Longre Chang and general secre-

ENCSU said it was dismayed by the attitude of the department in handling the mat-
ter. ENCSU pointed out that the government had agreed to fully sponsor the three students for 5 years to undergo undergraduate MBBS course following the manipulation of the NSEE result in 2016. This was also admitted by the department official during the meeting on the issue at CMO under the chairmanship of chief minister, T.R.
Zeliang. However, despite several appeals in the form of representation and verbal communication, the department failed to respond. ENCSU warned that if the students are victimized in any manner or in case of any eventuality, the department and the state government would be held responsible.

Kalibari areas; holy cross junction; entire stretch of Nyamo Lotha road; M.P. road area and city tower area. The cleanliness drive was carried out with monetary contributions made by the students, parents and staff along with the school management which were used for procuring the inventories for the drive such as aprons, hand gloves, masks, brooms, etc. Earlier, speaking at the brief launching programme, LFHSS chairman- cumprincipal, Andrew Ahoto exhorted the gathering to be embodiments of cleanliness on a daily basis and to inculcate the habit of keeping one’s self, household, surroundings and school premises always clean. Ahoto said the biggest question remains as to what
will be the final outcome of so called Swachhta awareness and cleanliness drives. He said that it was time for the people to wake up and start cleaning their own backyards instead of depending on others. He also questioned the state government and local bodies for not implementing stringent laws and imposed penalties for defaulters where all are made responsible for their own cleanliness. Ahoto further added that, ‘cleanliness as a virtue always starts with you’. Meanwhile, the school m a n a ge m e n t ex t e n d e d gratefulness to the students, parents and staffs for making the cleanliness drive success. Earlier, students gathered for a brief launch pro-

IMPHAL, Sep 8: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Friday said rampant destruction of nature and environment was behind the frequent floods being experienced in the region. Speaking at the inaugural session of the “Convention on Climate Change – Manipur State Action Plan on Climate Change,” organized by Centre for Social Development (CSD) in Imphal’s 1st MR Banquet Hall, Singh emphasized on the need to save the nature and environment and called for active participation to protect it. Irreparable damages have been done to the environment while extracting forest wealth, he said while stressing the need for a thorough study before taking a project which will affect the forest. Asserting that Northeast region is home to around 280 ethnic communities speaking around 170 dialects, the chief minister said that people are talking about protecting the indigenous population of the region. “However, it seems that we take less interest in
protecting the indigenous properties – the rich floras and faunas of the region,” he added. Stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a long-term plan to tackle climate change and global warming, Singh contended that Ujwala and Housing for All Schemes were part of his plan. The chief minister said that free LPG connections were being provided to BPL families under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana so that deforestation for firewoods can be checked. Likewise, government was also helping people to own concrete houses under Pradhan Mantri Awaj Yoajana (Housing for All scheme), he added. Stating that mere shouting of slogans to protect environment without being practical would lead to nowhere, the chief minister said that efforts were being made to convert garbage into fuel to replace charcoal as well. Maintaining that people must be aware that heavy rainfall and flash floods had started wreaking havoc in the hills as well apart from valley areas, he reminded
the gathering that natural calamities never spare anybody on the basis of religion and community. “As such, humankind should join hands as one family to take up necessary measures in advance to avoid natural calamities,” Singh added. Also speaking on the occasion, State public health engineering minister Losii Dikho opined that people should begin environment protection from personal levels. “Mere holding of functions and conventions without dedication and conviction in this regard would not serve any purpose,” he added. Northeast region is not only known as the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot but also as a confluence of species migrants because numerous species from Indo-Malaysian, Chinese and Indian regions had migrated to the Northeast, he asserted. “As such, people of the Northeast should do whatever possible to protect this rich bio-diversity resource for a sustainable living,” he said. Delegates from all the eight Northeast states took part in the convention.
Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy Tripura youth whimsical: Arunachal Cong chief rescued from
Itanagar, Sep 8 (PTI): The “whimsical” Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy, 2014, will create a new social disorder in Arunachal Pradesh if implemented, state Congress president Takam Sanjoy has said. Sanjoy said Arunachal Pradesh has been facing a crisis with the ChakmaHajong refugees for decades in spite of having constitutional safeguards, and implementation of the Tibetan Rehabilitation Policy would open another flood gate in the state. “This predominately tribal state, protected by constitutional safeguards like Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873, and Chin Hills Regulation 1896, cannot be equated with Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, New Delhi. Uttarakhand, which have decided to adopt the policy,” he said. There have been growing protests in Arunachal against the recent decision by its Cabinet to implement the Rehabilitation Policy. Sanjoy said the rehabilitation policy for Tibetan refugees was prepared by the Centre without consulting any state government. Terming the policy adoption as “whimsical”, he said, if implemented it would create a new social

He added that the Assam government is in sync with the Centre to work rigorously for making the ground fertile for the success of startup programmes.

kill human beings”. During the rally various slogans demanding legal action against Debajit and resignation of deputy chief minister on moral ground were shouted. Various Muslim based organizations in Manipur have been demanding befitting legal action against
Debaji while alleging that his post has hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslims. Earlier, addressing media, Md Jalal Shaik, president of the All Manipur Muslim Organisations Coordinating Committee demanded that deputy chief Joykumar should resign on moral grounds. “He (Debajit) is the son of our honourable deputy chief minister Y Joykumar. He had insulted Muslim religion across the world by wrongly interpreting the sacred sacrifice of the Muslim qurbani on Eid-Ul-Zuha day as practicing killing of people,” said Shaik. “If the deputy chief minister is holding a high post in the present government, he should take moral responsibility and bring his son to justice under the law of the land. He should allow taking legal action against his son,” he added.

IMPHAL, Sep 8: State social welfare minister Nemcha Kipgen Friday said that formulation and development of a policy for protection of children was the need of the hour. Considering the
alarming rate of crimes and abuse against children in the state, the policy will provide a safe and positive environment for children in our state, she said. Speaking at the oneday consultation on the formulation of Manipur State
Policy for Children-2017, the minister drew the attention of all the stakeholders to comply with all relevant local legislations, administrations and other measures on child rights and welfare to protect and ensure child rights. “All of us have the responsibility to do all that we can to mould our children for their lives as productive citizens in the future,” she said. The guideline of the policy states that Tibetans may be allowed to undertake any economic activity and to that extent, relevant papers/trade license/permit may be issued to them, and also permitted to take jobs in any field for which they are professionally qualified. “When the lease period expires, the state government through a policy decision can extend lease further. But, there is no question of allowing new settlement in any part of the state as available cultivable lands are limited even for its growing indigenous population,” Sanjoy said. He said issues relating to the Chakma-Hajong refugees, Tibetans or Bangladeshis should be viewed seriously, as the Himalayan state has turned into a “most volatile hotspot of South East Asia.” “Any trading license should not be granted to them (Tibetans), except the way others Indians are given on power of attorney basis on humanitarian grounds,” said Sanjoy, a former Lok Sabha member.

A g a rt ala , S e p 8 (IANS): A Tripura youth was rescued from Saudi Arabia, where he was tortured by his employer, due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s intervention in the case, BJP sources said here on Friday. A Bharatiya Janata Party spokesman said that Gopal Das, 34, was allegedly tortured by his employer in Saudi Arabia for over 20 months. Gopal spoke about the problem to his wife Bhabita Das in Tripura last week. The victim’s friends informed Modi and Sushma Swaraj of the ordeal via social media, the spokesman told the media. “Sushma Swaraj immediately asked the Indian High Commission in Riyadh to rescue the youth. Within four days he was rescued by the officials of Indian Consulate in Jeddah and he returned to Agartala on Thursday night,” he added. Das, a resident of Belonia, went to Saudi Arabia three years ago and took a transport worker’s job at Abha in Aseer Province. A Mumbai-based private organisation facilitated his travel.

Army to induct women in Indian military police
Indian Army to induct women in military corp.
nounced at the Army Chiefs’ Conclave, a forum of former Army chiefs, who were told that with increasing need for investigation of gender-specific allegations and crime, a necessity was felt to introduce women in the Corps of Military Police. Asked if it is an indication of women getting combat roles in the future, Brigadier S.K. Chatterji (retired) pointed that the Corps of Military Police was different from combat. He however said that the move shows increasing acceptability for women in the force. “Military police is a service. I do not see this affecting directly women getting in combat, specifically where they have not been given entry. But it is an indicator they are now being accepted more widely in the Army,” Chatterji told IANS. “The nature of job in the combat units is so different that other considerations come into play. In case of a woman on frontline being captured, will she be dealt with dignity or not - those are issues that come in,” he said. Colonel P.N. Khera (retired) pointed out that Military Police was meant to maintain law and order, and had nothing to do with combat. “It is not really a combat job. Military police is for discipline. Like police, they help in maintaining law and order, they do not go to the border. That is one decision government has to take separately,” Khera told IANS.
New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS): The Indian Army would induct women in the Corps of Military Police as JCOs and jawans and a proposal is being finalised for inducting around 800 women for it -- with an yearly intake of 52, it was announced on Friday. The decision was announced at the Army Chiefs’ Conclave, a forum of former Army chiefs, who were told that with increasing needs for investigation of gender-specific allegations and crime, a necessity was felt to introduce women in the Corps of Military Police. Women form a very minor section in the armed forces, with the IAF having the highest number at 1,350 followed by the army with 1,300 and the navy with 450 women officers, according to official information. The 1.3 million-strong armed forces have 59,400 officers. The Indian Air Force, in June last year, commissioned three women as fighter pilots. The Indian Navy is planning to induct women
as pilots for reconnaissance aircraft, but there are no women on warships and submarines. Then President Pranab Mukherjee, in his address to a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament in the beginning of Budget Session last year had said in the future, government would induct women in all the combat streams. The three-day Army Chief ’s Conclave, hosted by Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, is being attended by eight former army chiefs. Meanwhile the Indian Army’s decision to induct women in Military Police Corps shows wider acceptance for women in the force, but it is not an indication of women getting into combat roles, experts said on Friday. On Friday it was announced that the Indian Army would induct women in the Corps of Military Police and a proposal is being finalised for inducting around 800 women -- with a yearly intake of 52. Randeep Singh Surjewala New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS): The Congress on Friday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence over journalistactivist Gauri Lankesh’s murder and slammed union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad for trying to link her with Maoists. “In the past three years of BJP government 10 journalists have been killed and 142 were attacked. This is shameful and condemnable that the country’s Law Minister (Ravi Shankar Prasad) is trying to establish that Gauri Lankesh was a Naxalite supporter. “There is a conspiracy to suppress the voice of the writers, journalists and activists. By passing a condemnable and controversial remark of linking Lankesh with Naxalites, he has shamed the whole country,” said Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala. “The people who are celebrating Lankesh’s death on Twitter are being followed by PM Narendra Modi. However, BJP’s head of Information and Technology Amit Malviya calls it his freedom of expression. “Karnataka BJP MLA D.N. Jeevaraj made a statement that Lankesh would have been alive if she hadn’t written against RSS, BJP. It is unfortunate that BJP leaders are giving her death a communal and political colour,” added Surjewala.

Tourism and beef
ewly appointed Minister of State for Tourism, Alphons Kannanthanam gave a food tip for foreigners coming to India. After swearing-in, Aphonse said: “They (tourists) can eat beef in their own country and come here (India),” when asked by a reporter whether restrictions on consumption of beef in several states in the country will adversely affect the tourism industry. Alphons had said that there will be no country-wide ban on beef, people of each place will decide. The statement of the minister of state for tourism was quite ironic that visitors in India couldn’t eat beef, while the country is one of the largest exporters of cow meat. Beef ban in India is not merely about a political blame-game but a serious matter that raises questions on how socalled vigilante groups appear to have presently assumed so much influence over authorities in calling the shots. The issue of beef ban in India has been vigorously promoted by extreme right wing elements on the premise that even the Indian constitution has directed states to ban slaughter of milch cows as per Article 48 of the constitution. However, despite the directive, the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi has made it clear that he was not for such a ban that evoked religious sentiments. Gandhi has said: “How can I force anyone not to slaughter cows unless he is himself so disposed? It is not as if there were only Hindus in the Indian Union. There are Muslims, Parsis, Christians and other religious groups here.” This was his prayer discourse of July 25, 1947, from the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, Volume 88, as published online by the Gandhi Heritage Portal. Gandhi had reportedly received several thousand petitions for ban on cow slaughter but instead reiterated the right of citizens of other religions to practise their faith and culture. “I have been long pledged to serve the cow but how can my religion also be the religion of the rest of the Indians? It will mean coercion against those Indians who are not Hindus.”The difference between those who think India should follow the customs of the dominant religion and those who think that everyone should be free to pray, eat or dress as per one’s religious customs is the compulsion that had led to creation of India and Pakistan. The proponents of beef ban are those who have no love for their fellow citizens of other religious and cultural beliefs. It is a matter of deep concern, that beef ban has given such elements a legitimate cause to create discord and even take the law into their own hands. A panel discussion in New Delhi threw some interesting facts of which was the disinclination among the participants in believing that a ban on cow slaughter would solve anything rather than accentuating the politics of religious divide. The newly appointed tourism minister should have been quite tactful in handling the issue as it projected India as a nation that has been Hinduised. In fact India is still a healthy and progressives democracy despite what the votaries of cow slaughter may like to project. Hopefully, it is expected that the newly appointed minister will correct the drift and stick to the basics.
DailyDevotion Do It Yourself (1) …casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God… — 2 Corinthians 10:5 Determinedly Demolish Some Things. Deliverance from sin is not the same as deliverance from human nature. There are things in human nature, such as prejudices, that the saint can only destroy through sheer neglect. But there are other things that have to be destroyed through violence, that is, through God’s divine strength imparted by His Spirit. There are some things over which we are not to fight, but only to “stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord…” (see Exodus 14:13). But every theory or thought that raises itself up as a fortified barrier “against the knowledge of God” is to be determinedly demolished by drawing on God’s power, not through human effort or by compromise (see 2 Corinthians 10:4). It is only when God has transformed our nature and we have entered into the experience of sanctification that the fight begins. The warfare is not against sin; we can never fight against sin— Jesus Christ conquered that in His redemption of us. The conflict is waged over turning our natural life into a spiritual life. This is never done easily, nor does God intend that it be so. It is accomplished only through a series of moral choices. God does not make us holy in the sense that He makes our character holy. He makes us holy in the sense that He has made us innocent before Him. And then we have to turn that innocence into holy character through the moral choices we make. These choices are continually opposed and hostile to the things of our natural life which have become so deeply entrenched— the very things that raise themselves up as fortified barriers “against the knowledge of God.” We can either turn back, making ourselves of no value to the kingdom of God, or we can determinedly demolish these things, allowing Jesus to bring another son to glory (see Hebrews 2:10).

Post-mortem
Of NPSC & Viva Personality test marks Open questions to R. N. Ravi M N PSC recently declared the marks list of NCS, NPS, NSS& Allied Services Examination 2015 (http://www.npsc. co.in/notifications/3433.html) which has caused a raging debate in the social media over the marks allotted to the candidates in the Viva Personality Test. A couple of observations: 1. Out of the 330 candidates that appeared for the Viva Personality Test, there were candidates who scored as low as 30 out of 75 while there were many who scored 74 out of 75. This seems ludicrous. A Personality test is conducted to assess the Personality of the candidate. So, it is only natural to wonder why some scored as low as 30 while others scored as high as 74. Does this mean that those candidates who scored between30-35 have very bad personality and isn’t eligible to work for the Govt. One is tempted to assume that those candidates who scored around 30 marks was on ‘dumb mode’during the personality test or acted stupid and crazy inside the interview room like challenging the interview board or throwing the furniture around or jumping out of the window. At the same time, how could some candidate score as high as 74 out of 75? What magical words flew out of their lips during the interview? With what charm did they fill the interview room that after spending half an hour with the board members, all of them decided unanimously that such candidates have 99% perfect personality? Since it is a Personality Test and not an MCQ exam, we can assume
that the marks of the test should range from 45-65. For example: Let’s see the 2016 UPSC final result. More than 3000 candidates were called for interview. The highest mark allotted was 206 out of 275 which was secured by only 13 candidates out of the 3000+. Just imagine the outrage that would have swept across the nation, if some candidates had scored 270+ out of 275 in the Viva Personality Test. The current trend of allocating 74/75 marks in the Viva Personality Test needs to be checked. Or should we be happy that in this age of RTI, some candidates aren’t scoring 100 out of 75? 2. Competition for the NPSC Civil Services exam has become very strong. All the candidates that are qualified for the interview are equally capable and smart. If we consider the top 50 marks in the mains exam, we will see that their mains exam marks differ only by 10-15 marks. Therefore, except for some exceptional cases who scores very high at the mains exams, the final ranking list depends upon the mark scored at the Viva Personality Test.Hence when the Viva test marks vary from 30 to 74, it is only natural to suspect foul play.As mentioned above, it is inconceivable to even think that a person can score 74 out of 75 marks in the Personality Test unless it is a MCQ test or a Maths Exam. Believe it or not, there were at least 13 candidates who scored 74 out of 75 and some more who scored between 73 to 75 (73.20, 73.60, 73.80, 74.12etc). On a lighter note, the future of Nagaland looks very bright indeed when NPSC declares annually that there are at least 20+ Naga youths
with Christ like personality. At this scale, we will be producing 100 Youths with Christ like personality every Five years. Take a bow NBCC. NPSC is here. Two sincere suggestions to the NPSC: 1. Follow the UPSC model while allocating Viva/Personality Test marks. UPSC normally keep 75% of the total mark as the highest benchmark. (75% of 275 =206). The highest mark scored in UPSC CSE Interview both in 2015 and 2016 was 206. The highest ever mark secured during UPSC CSE interview in recent memory is 220/275 in 2014. In 2012 a candidate secured 245 marks but it was out of 300. Hence NPSC should set a benchmark of 75% of the total mark as the maximum mark that can ever be allotted to a candidate during the interview. (75% of 75 = 56.25). Some exceptional cases can be made where a maximum of 60/75 marks can be allotted to exceptional candidates. 2. Follow the UPSC model of conducting interviews. Since it is a Personality Test and not a memory test, more of issue based questions should be asked during the Interview. It has been observed that over the years, more of factual questions are asked during the interview.Nothing wrong with asking such questions but how can we assess the personality of a candidate by testing if he knows when the Russian Revolution took place? Factual questions if needed to be asked should be connected with a discussion on an issue around the factual question. Lipok Jamir, Kohima
r. Ravi, Your interview to Nagaland Post dated September 5, 2017 needs clarification on certain pertinent points. 1. You said (quote); “I am likely to engage them (the six NNPGs) in the peace process soon, may be this month” (unquote). Good but does that mean you will show the six NNPGs, the content of the August 3, 2015 Framework agreement the day you start peace talk with them? If your plan is to bring them into the purview of the ongoing talk, that is the most logical step. If not, will they engage with you? Or, are you planning to engage them in separate page? 2. You said (quote); “However, since the solution to Naga issue has to be inclusive there is ample space to accommodate all in the Naga Peace Process” (unquote). This, more or less acknowledged NSCN (IM)’s ownership of the peace process. In other words, this implied that you are going to accommodate six NNPGs in NSCN (IM)’s space, which means they will only play second fiddle to NSCN (IM) in the peace process. Were all your consultations with different sections of Nagas for inclusive solution aimed at accommodating only and not accepting them as equal stakeholders? 3. You said (quote); “Of course we cannot wait indefinitely for those who do not respond
positively to our call of inclusiveness. We are working towards signing a final agreement at the earliest” (unquote). Was that veiled warning to those refusing to come onboard? In your hurry to sign a final agreement, are you discounting those groups with the hope of exterminating them later? 4. You said; (quote); “I have made it clear that there will be only one peace process and one agreement because we cannot fragment the Naga issue” (unquote). You know that even if the six NNPGs join, NSCN (K) and NNC (Adinno) are still out. It is plain then that unless all groups are included, it is never going to be a final solution. Some of the groups have not come onboard but you are losing your patience, waiting for them. Thus, it is not difficult to surmise that you are actually trying to fragment the Naga issue. 5. You said (quote), “Government of India is committed to an inclusive solution to the Naga political issue” (unquote). India’s commitment to inclusive solution should have a basis in truth. The August 14, 1947 Naga declaration and the Plebiscite 1951 mandate for independence were historic political truths. This is the only basis to bring all groups onboard. Without acknowledging this truth directly, Nagas cannot see much of India’s commitment. Dr. K. Hoshi
Protective thinking: Are young Nagas the future or the past?
N
ow is the time to ask ourselves, are the young Nagas the Future or the Past? Here, the term “future” implies whether the young Nagas can overcome all petty differences and come under one banner to lead the Nagas into the future or as in the past will the ignorant youths be used again as a pawn by their respective Naga leaders to fulfill their agendas. And in studying the present scenario, it is likely that the latter might happen again. In order to make the young, vulnerable Naga youths understand this sensitive subject matter, let me put it this way, no organizations/ factions can survive without the solid physical support of the youths whatever be the cause, just or unjust. Any Individual must, first and foremost, cross-checked oneself of the intentions as well as of the consequences, be it good or bad, such actions are likely to bring before one blindly show loyalty to any call of mass involvement. The role of the youths is immeasurable in Nation building due to the tireless energy of the vibrant youths and this example can be seen in the historical developments of countries such as United States of America, Russia, Germany, China, etc. Too much of comparison with other society is not healthy, yet Naga youths being the ‘Last Hope’ of preserving Naga identity for the
T
ages to come have no option but to study how youths elsewhere have contributed to the growth and development of their respective Nations and lead their respective country into the future. Conversely, here in Nagaland, the practice of groupism and mental intimidation among youths of different tribes have left me with no option but to suppose for now that the present Naga youths will not lead us into the future. The following are some of the factors to substantiate my humble opinion: 1. Societal Environment: Family and social environment affect an individual’s mentality. Likewise, the present family and social environment are not capable of producing a refined reasonable Naga youths. Rather it only produces youths of raw and wild characters who take pride in bragging about himself, family, clan, and his tribe. Adding more woes, such youths are active bloggers in social networking sites like Facebook, where hateful, nonsensical, and provocative comments are manufactured and supplied ceaselessly. These kinds of youths are very useful for creating havoc everywhere and they had created havoc; plus they always think they are doing the right thing. If youths have been doing the right things, like they think and do, Nagaland would have been saved a long time ago. And seeing today’s real-
ity, it is not wrong to assume that in case the youths failed to reform themselves, Nagaland will not be saved from what is coming for them. In fictional Westeros Continent, a television series, Game of Throne, all the warring houses of Westeros unite at last to fight the “White Walkers, an army of the dead,” the fight between the living and the dead. In our case, it is exactly the opposite. For us, all the Naga warring houses, instead of fighting the outside enemy, are doing their best to fight among themselves. When winter comes no one will be spared. 2. Habits: By habits, I mean here the drinking habits of some 60-70% of Naga youths from the category of school drop outs, high school to college/university level. The figure may not be accurate but on average 6-7 out of 10 Naga youths do consume alcohol a result of widespread alcohol addiction. The tones of alcohol supplied during election present the facts and figures. When more than half of the youth populations are habitual drinkers, the youths would never be productive nor have protective and forward thinking. Another degrading habit of young Nagas is that they can only discuss/debates on Politics after consuming alcoholic beverage, not when they are sober. Being a reliable eye witness, even selfstyled ‘up-and-coming youth
leaders’ are not exempted from these habits. The result of these habits is that young Nagas continue to engage in useless unhealthy debates in the virtual world as well as in reality. Another irony is that most young individuals are not against the institutionalized system of corruption, but are only against some leaders on the basis of tribes alone. Past or present, both the public and elected leaders are equally responsible for the mess we face now. We must use the same scale in measuring every leader. These destructive habits, not forgetting gambling habits, unless corrected will aid in totally destroying the very fabric of our Naga society. 3. Lack of New Ideas: Though the literacy rate of Nagaland is high, the graduates of Nagaland are not fed with new ideas to practice it, but are fed the same old destructive ideas of dependency on government service alone. Again though many young student leaders outwardly speak on ills of tribalism/corruption, they continue to play with the same old rules instead of breaking the wheel of tribalism/corruption that had enveloped the Nagas from day one. As long as we failed to break this wheel and build a new Naga society with fresh ideas, the young vulnerable Nagas will be the first victims of the chaos and destruction which the wheel of tribalism will bring to our land. In this
Can Nagaland change abruptly?
he nations were suffering from corruption, slow economic growth, unemployment, nepotism of long-ruling dictators and citizens were smoldering in anger at the corrupted government. The government in existence only for the privileged, the haves, for their nepotism and the powerful continued without end. Widely publicized democratic elections brought the government again and again. The captive electorate repeatedly elected the privileged, the rich, the nepotism and the public continued life as before. Change never came to the land. The situation needed an event to set the smoldering society on fire. This was 2010 AD in many of the Arab nations. Then a smallunexpected incident in Tunisia set the whole Arab Nations completely one after another, in what is call the Arab Spring revolution. A qualified engineer from a poor family in Tunisia went from pillar to post without end in search of employment but got nowhere. Every place, everyone turned him down even for an ordinary job. He had no money and connections to bribe his way through
the corrupt System. Ultimately, for the survival of his family, wife and small children, Mohamed Bouazizi, the engineer started to sell fruits and vegetables in the market road side in a push cart. The municipal man asked him to remove his push cart away from the place; Bouazizi did not have money to bribe the Police. What exactly happened next is not known in detail. The Police is said to have beaten Bouazizi in the market place and unable to accept the injustice and humiliation, Azizi immolated himself. The story of injustice and corruption struck the chord with thousand others in other cities of Tunisia and in the following weeks Tunisians poured out into the Cities against the decades of nepotism and of corruption of President Ben Ali and his Jezebel wife who fled the country. In Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, Morocco and Jordan the exasperated public came out into the Streets thousands and thousands against their rulers. One after another the Arab Nations fell to the Spring Revolution. Can REFORM unexpectedly and suddenly come to Nagaland?
In my Church in Nagaland, there used to be an ardent and respected member, and whenever entrusted to, use to pray ardently for Revival to come to our Church. I agreed totally with him in his prayer, however, I never expected Revival would come to our Church abruptly like that and there. In spite of all of the members being very nice and good for fellowship, I felt most of us were only as good or as bad as any other ordinary fellow, not the serious convinced lot Revival likes to visit. Revival may not like to come to a Church of Laodiceans. Perhaps, as it looks, the Naga do not change abruptly any way, neither in politics, in social or in religious lives. They are too nice persons without conviction in any specific realms. In Nagaland today there are too less of the zealous and serious to set the nice society people on Fire for change. The Naga society may patiently continue to grow and wait for the time of the Lord’s favor to ripen the fruit. He did not did not speak to them for 420 years However, he looked at them always! manner, the Young Nagas will not get the opportunity to lead the Nagas into the future; rather they will lead us down toward violence and chaos. The biggest challenge for the Naga youths of today: can the youths acknowledge and admit to our own faults and inspire a renaissance of reform. Some old ideas and practices cannot guarantee any reformation but the end itself. 4. Entertainment Factors: The undeniable truth of our traditional ways of life is the presence of rich Folk songs and dances. Present Nagas may be living in the 21st century, but the same blood flows through our veins; however, the present Naga Youths have overdosed themselves on entertainment (singing, dancing, fashion, concerts, watching TV shows, etc.) and a majority of the young populace has neither the patience for reading nor listening. These two habits, reading and listening, is most vital for growth and development of any individual and its society, nonstop entertainment is not. Since we are obsessively engrossed with entertainment, Nagas are now a means, a tool of entertainment for other economically advanced communities. With regard to the reading habits, let me cite an example of the Mizo youths: around thirty thousand copies of a book on Mizo National Movement written by Mizo Nationalist
leader, Zoramthonga, was sold off like hot cakes within its first week of publication. Whereas, in Nagaland, various books written by Naga leading figures remain unsold and stockpile in many bookstores. Alas! A modern Naga tragedy. The younger generation must always remember that the future lies in their hands alone, for there is no Naga savior who can build our society but youths alone. Very many have destroyed our society by promising us a better future. We can only save ourselves by following the principle of Non-Violence in spirit and in letter since any movement indulge with violence yields no long term benefits. However, the end is inevitable if we, like in the past generations, zealously take comfort in one’s respective tribe’s numerical strength, in comparison with other Naga tribes, by resorting to violence and intimidation. If we decide every issue by looking through the lens of a tribe and regional angle alone, such an outcome is not impossible, where our state will soon be overrun by neighboring states’ populace after we annihilate each other. Violence is a disease, it spreads. Until the final nail in the coffin for the Nagas, the question, Are Young Nagas the Future or the Past? Shall remain. Advocate Pakinrichapbo, Dimapur,

Paradox of 6th September: Violence is preventable, Peace is achievable
Our water is muddy, please don’t stir or shake it. Shallow waters are also noisy while clean waters run deep. Sir,
We have just observed 6th September as Peace or Ceasefire Day. It was also the Pochury ‘Black Day’ because of what had happened at Matikhrü in 1960. What a paradox! The call of all Nagaland churches, led by NBCC, for Clean Election and “Let us reason together” is loud and clear. We are all aware of the public mood with all pent-up feelings and emotions at simmering points everywhere. Mob psychology of violence has no role in a Christian state. There is an uneasy lull or quiet at all fronts. Battle lines are being drawn, people are being polarised and taking sides. It is the responsibility of every sensible citizen to work hard to prevent anything unwanted or ugly. People will speak when the time comes. In a democracy, there is always a proper way and a proper time. Together we can all work for a more peaceful and harmonising tomorrow. Dr. Dietho-o, South Corner, AG Road, Kohima

Maya Kodnani and Amit Shah.
Ahmedabad, Sep 8 (IANS): A special trial court here on Friday granted last opportunity to former Gujarat BJP Minister Maya Kodnani to present party President Amit Shah as her defence witness in the Naroda Gam massacre case during the 2002 communal riots in the state. She has been given time till Tuesday. Ko d n a n i , f o r m e r Minister for Women and Child Welfare in the Narendra Modi government in the state, is a convict in the mass murder of 97 Muslims in Naroda Patiya, an area adjoining Naroda Gam where 11 people were killed on the

After several adjournments when Kodnani, a key accused in the Naroda Gam case, sought more time to serve summons on Amit Shah to establish her alibi, the court had asked her to present Shah latest by Friday. In all, she had presented 12 others in her favour earlier. They included her husband Surendra Kodnani, former Deputy Mayor and Bhartiya Janata Party corporator Dinesh Makwana and former BJP MLA Amrish Govindbhai Patel. Ram Rahim was convicted by a CBI court in Panchkula town of Haryana on August 25 for the rape of two female disciples in 1999. He was later sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and is lodged in the District Jail at Sunaria near Rohtak. His conviction led to violence in Panchkula and Sirsa in Haryana, leaving 38 people dead and 264 injured. Isolated incidents of violence were also reported from Delhi and several other places in Punjab.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Simardeep Singh, who is also officiating Commissioner of Police in Gurugram, late on Friday night disclosed that Ashok Kumar, bus conductor of Ryan International School, has been arrested. Kumar, the son of Amichand, resident of village Ghamroj has been arrested in the Bhondsi murder case of a seven-year-old child, the DCP said in a statement.
Blind children’s molestation case
Though DCP Singh didn’t disclose the motive behind the killing, sources said Kumar killed the child after failing to sexually assault him. Singh didn’t respond to a question on what action has been taken against the school management. Pradhuman, a Class 2 student, was found dead by a school staff in the washroom with his throat slit. A knife, presumably the murder weapon, was found near the body. His sister is a student of Class 5 in the same school, located on Sohna Road, some 13 km from Gurugram city. (From p-1) According to the officer, Radhamani, a native of Haripad, moved to Nagaland with her husband in the 90s. After befriending Pillai, she became a partner in his business firms. “Radhamani and her husband were running a tea shop in Nagaland. Now, they are having assets worth crores of rupees,” the officer said. The IT officers also found a Naga tribal woman, as a partner in Pillai’s various business establishments. She had also invested money when Pillai’s son Arun procured plots in various places in Kerala. She is also a partner in the business firm registered in Shillong, the report stated.
(From p-1) However, stiff opposition by Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC), the NSDZ project was kept in “cold storage” by the government, Lohe said. He also lashed out at the government for rampant backdoor appointments in every department. Lohe cautioned that the “handiwork of NPF in pushing excess staffs” into the departments would have adverse impact on development, as major chunk of fund would be spent on payments of salary. Therefore, he urged the voters to be cautious about exercising their rights during the forthcoming assembly election. “Your decision would determine the future of the Nagas,” he said. The session, chaired by NRP working president Joshua Sumi, began with an invocation by CRC Diezephe pastor Thejangulie while the welcome address was delivered by vice president Dako Phom. NRP also launched the party’s youth wing and elected Nzanbemo Lotha as its working president with three vice president, three general secretaries and two secretaries.

He said there were about 135 food laboratories set up by the private sector, which were recognised by the FSSAI, in addition to 90 government laboratories, most of which are under state governments’ control. He said the FSSAI did not have food inspectors as food inspection was largely done by state governments. Asking the food industry for collaboration, the FSSAI chief said: “Our efforts should be building coalition of stakeholders, who can jointly take responsibility. If we join hands together, our number of food inspectors will go above 20,000 in US.” He said the FSSAI worked with science organisations, research insti-
Desai on Friday gave Kodnani the final ultimatum till Tuesday and stated there would be no further adjournment after that. Last month, the Supreme Court issued an order to the special trial court to wrap up the hearing in the Naroda Gam case within four months. The former Minister’s advocate had on Monday informed the court they she needed more time to be able to contact Amit Shah. In her application to the court, she said since Shah was not “reachable due to his busy schedule, it is difficult to decide as to which address the summons be served to him”. Kodnani is among the 82 accused on trial in the Naroda Gam case. In 2012, she was convicted on similar charges and sentenced to life imprisonment for her role in Naroda Patiya massacre, where she was termed a “kingpin”. She and 31 other convicts have challenged the verdict in the Gujarat High Court which concluded its hearing on August 30 and reserved the verdict.

And balance 10-12 per cent is in final stages of being notified,” he said. “We continue to give all newer and better standards to provide scope for innovation for food industry and global benchmark as far as new products and service is concerned.” The FSSAI has released the ‘Yellow Book’ that was aimed at children detailing how to eat right with emphasis on preventing nutritional deficiencies and making healthy choices. Agarwal said the book was launched in three categories for children in different age groups and it covered a range of topics -from food safety practices, personal hygiene and cleanliness habits, and eating a balanced diet to packing a wholesome lunch box. He said it can be adopted across schools through state education machineries as part of their curricular and co-curricular activities.

New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS): The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is coming up with a comprehensive inspection framework to ensure supply of safe, hygienic and nutritious food, an official said here on Friday. “We are working with comprehensive approach which we are calling safe and nutritious food shared responsibility, in which we are trying to reach out to Indian homes, schools, work places, restaurants, street food vendors, railways, temples,” FSSAI Chief Executive Officer Pawan Agarwal said at a FICCI event. “On the food practices standards, we are very much far behind and this is one area of focus where we depend quite extensively on professionals who work in the food industry. We are somewhat unfortunate that general awareness about standards of food safety and hygiene is very low.” Agarwal said that a new regulatory arrangement was being put in place to support the enforcement of regulations.

Mumbai, Sep 8 (PTI): Gold jumped by Rs 235 per 10 grams to touch an 11-month high of Rs 30,360 here today, tracking a solid trend overseas amid increased buying by local jewelers to meet festive season demand. Silver recaptured the Rs 41,000-mark by surging Rs 500 per kg on higher offtake by industrial units. Standard gold (99.5 purity) rose by Rs 235 to end at Rs 30,360 per 10 grams against Thursday’s closing level of Rs 30,125. The level has not been seen since November 11, 2016. Pure gold (99.9 purity) also jumped by the same amount to settle at Rs 30,510 per 10 grams from Rs 30,275 earlier. Silver (.999 fineness) surged by Rs 500 to finish at Rs 41,240 per kg against Rs 40,740 yesterday. Globally, gold prices rose to their highest in more than a year as weak economic data reduced expectations of another interest rate increase in the US this year, US bond yields fell and the dollar plunged to its weakest since early 2015.

New Delhi, Sep 8 (PTI): With India trailing China on economic growth post demonetisation, former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan has said the government should not have done “chest-thumping” on being the fastest-growing economy without achieving very strong GDP expansion for 10 years. In an interview to PTI, he said India can lecture the world on things such as culture and history, but on growth, it should do that only after achieving 8-10 per cent rate for 10 years. Rajan, the only central bank governor in two decades who did not get a second term, courted controversy when in April last year he had called rising India a one-eyed king in the land of blind. The pilot project is being run in seven cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Hyderabad. An official statement issued after the conclusion of the recent two-day ‘Rajaswa Gyan Sangam’ conference (national meeting of top tax officers of the country) had said that the government wants I-T assessing officers “be encouraged to maximise e—assessment in a phased manner and to ensure that work be completed online so that there is complete transparency.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who inaugurated the conference, had also asked taxmen to create an environment that instills confidence among honest taxpayers and uproots corruption.

The blue print adds that for cases which “are selected for scrutiny during the 2017-18 fiscal and onwards, the Board (CBDT) has decided to utilise the e-proceeding facility for conduct of assessment on pan-India basis.” “Introduction of eproceedings in time barring scrutiny cases is also contemplated,” the blue print said. The government initiative was launched in October 2015 by the I-T department’s policy-making body--the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)--in select metro cities with an aim to reduce the visit by assesses to tax offices and their interface with the taxman, thereby curbing instances of corruption. A latest blue print prepared by the department on the subject states that the number of paperless or e-assessments over the internet has seen growth in the last three years. “During the financial year 2015-16, a total of 1,014 cases were completed under the pilot project (eassessment). “The same was completed in approximately 14,000 cases during the 2016-17 fiscal. Mumbai, Sep 8 (PTI): Steering its spectacular run for the third straight session, the rupee today surged by 27 paise to hit a fresh one-month high of 63.78 against the dollar as the beleaguered US currency continued its incessant freefall worldwide. This was the best close for the domestic currency seen since August 8, when it had settled at 63.63 per dollar. A massive unwinding of dollar long positions by exporters and corporates predominantly lifted the rupee sentiment, also backed by extremely bearish dollar overseas undertone. Continued optimism of fund inflows against the backdrop of improving macro-economic environment also supplemented the rally. The broad-based US dollar sell-off remained a key theme during forex session on Friday. The home currency resumed with a gap-up at 63.85 as against Thursday’s close of 64.05 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) market. Maintaining its stellar momentum, it rallied strongly throughout the day and finished at 63.78, a sharp gain of 27 paise, or 0.42 per cent. On a weekly basis, the rupee appreciated by a good 24 paise against the US currency. The RBI, meanwhile, fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 63.8664 and for the euro at 77.0357.

Mexico’s ‘strongest quake in a century’ claim 32 lives
Mexico City, Sep 8 (IANS): At least 32 people were killed as Mexico was hit by the most powerful earthquake in a century that struck off the nation’s Pacific Coast late on Thursday, rattling millions of residents with its violent tremors and triggering a series of tsunami waves. The quake hit offshore in the Pacific at 11.49 p.m. (0449 GMT), about 100 kilometres from the coastal town of Tonala, in far southern Chiapas state, Mexico’s seismologic service said. A tsunami warning was issued for Mexico, with three-metre-high waves possible, and other nearby countries. The epicentre of the earthquake was off the coast of Chiapas, a state in southern Mexico, but the rumblings rocked the Mexican capital more than 600 miles away, causing electricity failures, and reports of sporadic damage, the New York Times reported. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said the quake measured 8.2 and was

About 50 million people across the country felt the earthquake. The force sent residents of the megacity fleeing into the streets at midnight, shaken by the alarms blaring over loudspeakers and a full minute of tremors. Windows broke, walls collapsed, and the city seemed to convulse in terri-
fying waves. The quake even rocked the city’s landmark Angel of Independence monument. The effects in the southern states of Chiapas and Oaxaca were probably more severe. Alejandro Murat, the Governor of Oaxaca, told the Televisa network that at least 23 people had died in the state, and local officials said residents were buried under the rubble of buildings. Luis Manuel García Moreno, the secretary of
civil defence for the state of Chiapas, said the toll there had risen to seven, and two children died in the state of Tabasco, one when a wall collapsed, the other after a respirator lost power in a hospital. The effects were also felt in Guatemala, where at least one person died and homes along the border with Mexico were levelled. Many people sustained injuries in the 7.3 magnitude quake that hit the country just hours after the one in Mexico. Schools in at least 10 Mexican states were ordered closed on Friday as the President ordered an immediate assessment of the damage nationwide. In the hours after the quake, the National Seismological Service registered several aftershocks. “We are assessing the damage, which will probably take hours, if not days,” said Nieto, who addressed the nation just two hours after the quake. “But the population is safe over all. There should not be a major sense of panic.”

Rohingya crisis: Nobel institute clarifies on Suu Kyi’s prize revocation
Sydney, SEP 8 (AGENCIES): Australian researchers said that Mount Erebus, an active volcano on Antarctica’s Ross Island, is surrounded by caves hollowed out in the ice by steam. Soil samples retrieved from the caves have revealed intriguing traces of DNA from mosses, algae and small animals. The research has been published in the journal Polar Biology. “It can be really warm inside the caves - up to 25C in some caves. You could wear a T-shirt in there and be pretty comfortable,” said co-author Dr Ceridwen Fraser, from the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. “There’s light near the cave mouths, and light filters deeper into some caves where the overlying ice is thin.” Dr Fraser said that most of the DNA resembles that found in plants and animals from the rest of Antarctica. But that some sequences couldn’t be fully identified. Co-researcher Prof Craig Cary, from the University of Waikato in New Zealand, said previous research had found that a range of bacteria and fungi lived in Antarctica’s volcanic caves.

Copenhagen, SEP 8 (AGENCIES): The organization that oversees the Nobel Peace Prize said Friday the 1991 prize awarded to Myanmar’s Aung Sang Suu Kyi cannot be revoked. Olav Njolstad, head of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, said in an email to The Associated Press that neither the will of prize founder Alfred Nobel nor the Nobel Foundation’s rules provide for the possibility of withdrawing the honor from laureates. “It is not possible to strip a Nobel Peace Prize laureate of his or her award once bestowed,” Njolstad wrote. “None of the prize awarding committees in Stockholm and Oslo has
ever considered revoking a prize after it has been awarded.” An online petition signed by more than 386,000 people on Change.org is calling for Suu Kyi to be stripped of her Peace Prize over the persecution of Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslim minority. Suu Kyi received the award for “her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights” while standing up against military rulers. She became the country’s de facto leader after Myanmar held its first free election in 2012 and she led her party to a landslide victory. About 270,000 Rohingya Muslims have sought shelter in Bangladesh since violence erupted in Myanmar two weeks ago, the UN says. A spokeswoman said the jump - up from 164,000 on Thursday - was because new pockets of people had been found. She called the figure “so alarming” and said urgent action was needed to address the situation in Myanmar. Those fleeing say Myanmar’s military are burning their villages and attacking them. Myanmar rejects this, saying its military is fighting against Rohingya militants.

The attorney general said he would make a final decision pending a pre-trial hearing for Sara Netanyahu. Netanyahu is suspected of misusing 359,000 shekels ($100,000; £77,000) of state funds for catering purposes, the justice ministry said. Prime Minister Netanyahu said the claims against his wife were “absurd”. Avichai Mandelblit’s announcement is the strongest indication yet as to whether Netanyahu will be charged, following a longrunning investigation, which has been the subject of intense speculation in the Israeli media. The allegations centre on Netanyahu’s suspected involvement in expenses claims at the prime minister’s official residence. Prosecutors say Sara Netanyahu and a senior official, Ezra Seidoff, claimed costs for food prepared externally and for hiring private chefs, between September 2010 and March 2013, whilst covering up the fact that the residence also employed a cook. State funding for both is not allowed.

oseph Kahn, the director of Taylor Swift‘s video for new single ‘Look What You Made Me Do’, has re-entered the debate over Beyoncé‘s influence on the video. After a teaser for the ‘LWYMMD’ video was released on August 25, fans drew comparisons to Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’ video and live performance. The next day Kahn replied that Swift’s video was “not in [Beyoncé]’s art space.” Now, in an LA Times interview published yesterday (Thursday 7), Kahn has spoken out again on the alleged similarities between the videos. Referencing Swift’s 2015 video for ‘Bad Blood’, which he also directed and which preceded Beyoncé’s ‘Formation’, he said: “I really do think that Beyoncé copied ‘Bad Blood’”.
He said that ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ is “not ‘Formation’ at all,” adding: “They try to say she’s wearing a black crop top and Beyoncé wore a black crop top. But they don’t realize in 2015 in ‘Bad Blood,’ Taylor Swift was wearing a black crop top. I really do think, by the way, that Beyoncé copied ‘Bad Blood.’” Meanwhile, as Swift’s campaign for sixth album ‘Reputation’ builds towards its release date of November 10, the singer was recently reported to have attempted to trademark key phrases and titles from her new album. According to TMZ, song title ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ and lyric ‘The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now’ are among the phrases that she is seeking to control.

Stephens to face Keys in US Open final
N E W YO R K , S e p 8 (Agencies): Americans Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys, both struggling with serious injuries just three months ago, advanced to their first Grand Slam final at the US Open. Stephens, who missed 11 months with a left foot injury before returning in July, outlasted seven-time Slam champion Venus Williams 6-1, 0-6, 7-5. “I’m super happy to be in a Grand Slam final,” Stephens said. “To do it here, my home slam, is obviously more special. I think this is what every player dreams about.” US 15th seed Keys, who had left wrist surgery for the second time in 10 months after a first-round French Open exit, routed US 20th seed CoCo Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-2 in 66 minutes to complete the first all-American US Open final since Serena Williams beat sister Venus in 2002. “It still doesn’t feel real. I’m still shaking,” Keys said. “I played pretty well. There’s a lot of things in my head right now so I’m

I’m just happy to be in the final.” The friends and Fed Cup teammates will meet Saturday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in the biggest match of either’s career for a top prize of $3.7 million (3.07 million euros). “I’ve known her for a long time. She’s one of
my closest friends on tour,” Stephens said. “I love her to death. And it’s not easy playing a friend.” Stephens, who was wearing a walking boot in June and ranked 957th in July, has won 14 of her past 16 matches, with semi-final runs at Toronto and Cincinnati. “I have no words to describe what I’m feeling,

what it took to get here, the journey I’ve been on,” Stephens said. Stephens needed a thrilling break at love in the penultimate game and closing hold of serve to deny two-time champion Williams her first US Open final in 15 years. Now 83rd, Stephens is the lowest-ranked Slam finalist since unranked Jus-
tine Henin at the 2010 Australian Open and the lowest at the US Open since unranked Kim Clijsters won the 2009 title. Stephens, who beat Williams in the first round of the 2015 French Open in their only prior meeting, will jump into the world top 25 next week with the victory. US ninth seed Williams could not overcome 51 unforced errors that doomed her bid to become the oldest women’s singles finalist in US Open history at age 37. Stephens, 24, is 4-0 in WTA finals, having won titles in 2015 at Washington and last year in Auckland, Acapulco and Charleston. The only cautionary note for Keys, 22, was a medical timeout to have her right leg taped three games from the end. “I definitely started to feel it,” she said. “I felt if I went too far it might be something more.” It was the first allAmerican US Open women’s semi-finals since 1981 and the first at any Slam since Wimbledon in 1985.

NE states to play Ranji Trophy next year NEW DELHI, Sep 8 (PTI): The Committee of Administrators (COA) on Friday assured that all six north eastern states will be playing Ranji Trophy as individual units next season with BCCI GM (Game Development), Ratnakar Shetty, given charge of their smooth integration. The six states Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh met Vinod Rai for one and a half hour with plea of taking part as a combined unit this season. However, they were assured that by next season they would be part of Ranji Trophy while they will play as separate states in the age group categories (U-16, U-19 And U-23) from this season onwards. “Mr Rai told us that since Ranji Trophy is starting from October 6, it will be difficult to play this season. However we will be playing as individual states from next season. After all these years, this is the first time we have got complete assurance. Prof Shetty will look into implementation part,” north east convenor
Naba Bhattacharjee said. The good news is that COA has decided that U-16 National Championship (Vinoo Mankad) and U-23 (CK Nayudu Trophy) will have a specific North East Zone. “The U-16 and U-23 BCCI tournaments are held zone wise. While Assam and Tripura continue to play in East Zone, a dedicated North East Zone will be created. The top two from the zone will qualify for the knock outs,”
Bhattacharjee added. The only problem is Cooch Behar Trophy (U-19), whose scheduled has been already chalked out. “The COA said that technical committee chairman Sourav Ganguly will take a call in this regard,” he further added. It was lear nt that when the units requested for disbursement of annual grants, Rai instructed them to file an affidavit signed by their presidents that atleast 80 percent recommendations of Lodha Panel is adhered to. “We told COA that you don’t need to disburse huge amounts to new units like us but enough funds to run the show,” he added. It was also learnt that Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has taken a bank loan of Rs 6 crore for organisation of the T20 international match between Australia and India at its newly constructed stadium in Barsapara. The ACA currently doesn’t get BCCI grants as there has been an adverse report of financial discrepancies found in its audited accounts.
Spend money planned for opening ceremony on game: FIFA NEW DELHI, Sep 8 (PTI): Football’s world governing body FIFA has made it clear that it is not comfortable with the Indian government’s plan of having an opening ceremony for the Under-17 World Cup, saying the money should instead be spent on the game. From the very beginning, the world body and the Local Organising Committee have been insisting that FIFA tournaments do not have opening ceremonies worldwide but the sports ministry has been adamant about having one for the event next month. The sports ministry wanted to host an opening ceremony either on October 5, a day before the start of the prestigious tournament here, or on October 6, just a few hours before the kickoff.
Asked what the world body thinks about the government’s plan to hold an opening ceremony, FIFA’s Head of Tournaments Jaime Yarza made it quite apparent that such a plan was not particularly welcome. “FIFA and the Local Organising Committee of the FIFA U-17 World Cup have been working very closely with the Government of India to make the upcoming tournament a great success. During the course of this work, FIFA has been informed about the GoI’s interest in holding an opening ceremony for the FIFA U-17 World Cup,” Yarza told PTI in an e-mail interview. “To be in line with previous tournaments, and in the best interest of the sport, we believe that the main focus should remain on football and the players,
Jaime Yarza
and that the investment necessary for an opening ceremony is better deployed in the youth and in football development of the country - even more so now with the AIFF’s ambitious plans to lay solid foundations for India’s footballing future,” he added. The Under-17 World Cup, the first ever FIFA event India is hosting, will be played in six cities - New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Kochi and Margao - from October 6 to 28. Yarza said the Indian government has offered
unstinted support to the organisers to make the U-17 World Cup successful. “The Government of India, and most importantly the Prime Minister of India, are important partners in this U-17 World Cup. They have relentlessly supported the tournament and encouraged the Indian people, through the tournament’s legacy programme Mission XI Million, to play football and to attend the matches in the six host cities. “The government’s backing of the tournament over the past three years and commitment to change the sporting culture in the country is something we are very proud of and happy about,” the FIFA official said. Yarza said the preparations of the U-17 World Cup, which begins in less than a month, have been progressing as per schedule
and FIFA was confident that the prestigious tournament will be a success. “Our partners in place, the Local Organising Committee and the AIFF, have confirmed that the preparations are going according to the plans laid together with them. We are very confident that this trend will continue and that India’s first FIFA tournament will be a resounding success. “It’s now time to implement the second stage of the overlay programme in close cooperation with the LOC and the Government of India.” He said a FIFA team will fly down to India two weeks before the start of the tournament to visit the venues and make sure that all arrangements live upto the requirements of the teams, the public, the media and the marketing partners.
Lyon up to career-best ICC Test ranking
Nathan Lyon
Dubai, Sep 8 (Agencies): Nathan Lyon’s recordbreaking tour of Bangladesh has propelled him to a careerhigh in the world Test bowling rankings. Lyon moved up nine spots to No.8 in the latest rankings, published by the International Cricket Council (ICC), breaking into the top 10 for the first time. The offspinner claimed 22 wickets in Bangladesh, one shy of Sri Lankan tweaker Rangana Herath’s record for a two-Test series. With 46 Test scalps at an average of 22.35, Lyon overtook Indian spin kings Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin as the world’s leading
wicket-taker in 2017. Lyon became just the second bowler to claim 13 wickets in a Test in Asia during his man-of-the-match performance in Chittagong, where Australia won by seven wickets to draw the series 1-1. Australian coach Darren Lehmann heaped praise on Lyon, who had responded emphatically after being challenged to lift his performance on the subcontinent. “ H e ’s r e a l ly g rown,” Lehmann said. “Obviously, we changed the set-up of the side 12 months ago and we’ve had a lot of young guys come in the group. He’s had to take a next step as a leader so really pleased the way he’s gone about that.” Lyon shared man-of-theseries honours with David Warner, who scored centuries in both Tests to break his subcontinent drought. Warner moved up one spot to fifth in the ICC Test batting rankings, while Peter Handscomb climbed to a career-high 24th and skipper Steve Smith retained his No.1 spot. Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan, who was man of the match in the first Test in Dhaka, kept his crown as the world’s No.1-ranked allrounder.
