EC on filing of false affidavit by candidates New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS): The Election Commission on Thursday told the Supreme Court that a candidate who files a false affidavit at the time of filing his nomination paper does not attract disqualification even if convicted for the offence by a court. The Election Commission told the bench of Justice J.Chelameswar and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer that under Section 125A of the Representation of People Act, the total punishment for filing a false affidavit at the time of filing nomination is six months, or fine or both and this is well short of the requirement of minimum of two years of sentence for attracting disqualification under Section 8A of the electoral act. The commission told the court that as a part of electoral reforms, it had, on February 3, 2011, recommended to the Central government to amend Section 125A and enhance the sentence for filing a false affidavit to two years but nothing has been done so far. ANSTA backs govt’s move to revamp Education deptt DIMAPUR, SEP 7 (NPN): All Nagaland School Teachers Association (ANSTA) has come out in support of the state government policy to revamp school education department, saying that the move was a positive step to streamline the department riddled with problems. In a statement, ANSTA president Ponchulo Wanth and general secretary Visato Koso said that the exercise on redeployment of attached teachers to their respective places of posting, checking menace of practicing proxy teachers and appointment of shortage math and science teachers, initiated by the minister of school education Tokheho Yepthomi, were some of the old demands raised by the association. According to ANSTA, the same exercise had been carried out in the past but could not be materialized due to interference by higher ups, bureaucrats, legislators etc. To ensure that such futile exercise was not repeated, it urged upon the minister to be firm on the

decision in executing the proposed policy. The association also made it clear that the move was for total revamping and streamlining of the department and not targeted or against any individual teacher(s). ANSTA therefore, directed all units /sub-units officials to extend all possible help and cooperation to/with the field officers- DEO /SDEO/ HM/AHM etc. of the respective jurisdictions so that the proposed government policy would be implemented in effective manner. Further, on the appointment of math and science teachers, ANSTA has asked the department to take into account the existing rules on reservation of vacancies for ST in Nagaland by reserving 80 percent of the vacancies which are to be filled by direct recruitment. However, in the event of nonavailability of local eligible candidate for the post, a qualified nonNaga may be allowed for appointment to the posts on the contractual basis as per existing norms of the recruitment, ANSTA said.

‘93 blasts: Death for 2, Salem gets life term Mumbai, Sep 7 (PTI): A Mumbai court Thursday awarded death sentence to Tahir Merchant and Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan and life imprisonment to extradited gangster Abu Salem in the 1993 serial blasts case. Besides Salem, the court also sentenced Karimullah Khan to life imprisonment in the case while awarding 10 years’ sentence to the fifth convict, Riyaz Siddiqui. A special TADA court had in June convicted six persons, including mastermind Mustafa Dossa and Salem, in the serial blasts case, 24 years after the attacks left 257 people dead in the country’s financial capital. It, however, let off accused Abdul Quayyum, for want of evidence. This was the second leg of the trial. All the seven accused were facing multiple charges which included criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Government of India and murder. The court, in its June 16 ruling convicting six accused, held that the prosecution had proved that Salem was one of the main conspirators, and he delivered three AK-56 rifles,

that the inordinate long period of suspension(s) imposed on Rio, was a deliberate action to inhibit his popularity and active participation and contribution at this very crucial juncture of the Naga history. P&IC said the very ‘Media & Press Bureau’ of the NPF Hqs. that had for years projected Rio, a three consecutive time leader of the NPF led DAN and chief minister of Nagaland, as a visionary, dynamic, accommodative, magnanimous and able Naga leader etc., made a U turn by levelling various allegations. Asserting that Rio had the support of majority of the NPF legislators and the rank and file of the party’s organisational set-up, P&IC at the same time reminded the “minority group that they themselves went to court and got themselves defeated.” It cited the August 18 Supreme Court ruling which had dismissed the

ammunition and hand grenades to actor Sanjay Dutt (convicted under the Arms Act in the earlier phase of the trial). Salem, who was close to (absconding accused Dawood Ibrahim’s brother) Anees Ibrahim and Dossa, took upon of himself to bring a part of arms and ammunition from Dighi to Mumbai, the court had said. This was “vital towards achievement of the conspiracy so that the weapons could be used to terrorise and torment innocent citizens of India,” the court had said. The trial of Abu Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Karimullah Khan, Firoz Abdul Rashid

‘Blasts verdict shows resolve to fight terror’

BJP hailed the court verdict in the Mumbai serial blasts case, saying it shows India’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of acts of terror do not go unpunished. “At a time when the Modi gover nment has brought terrorism on the top of global agenda, this judgement shows India’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of

such acts of terror do not go unpunished,” BJP spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao told PTI. He said the judgement also marks justice for the families of over 257 persons, who had died in the blasts. This verdict, Rao said, further strengthens the government’s commitment to fighting terrorism, which is a global menace, in all its forms.

Hope Dawood,Memon are also punished: Cong

Congress said justice has finally prevailed in the Mumbai serial blasts case and asserted that India is determined to fight terrorism and punish its perpetrators. Congress incharge of communications Randeep Surjewala voiced hope that terrorists Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon will also be punished, after a Mumbai TADA court sentenced two accused to death and handed down life term to two others including Dawood’s aide Abu Salem. “Justice prevails in Mumbai blasts with life imprisonment of Abu Salem. 104 accused convicted so far. Next should be Dawood Ibrahim and Memon,” he said on Twitter.

MGNREGA: Nagaland to implement DBT ANTA, KCCU submit DIMAPUR, SEP 7 (NPN): Along with rest of the country, Nagaland will start implementing the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) under MGNREGA beginning from the current financial year 2017. Informing this in a press note, Rural Development secretary, Kelei Zeliang said that the wages of the MGNREGA workers would be directly credited to the individual accounts of the jobcard holders who have actually carried out the works on the basis of Rs.177 per day as daily wage through National Electronic Fund Management System (NeFMS)–Public Financial Management System (PFMS). This would ensure transparency and check corruption at all levels, he added. To avail the benefit, Kelei said every jobcard holder must have a bank account duly linked with Aadhaar, unlike the present practice where wages of MGNREGA workers are paid by cash through the VDBs. He said in

the new system “no cash payment would be possible.” Kelei also informed that if any jobcard holder needs employment, he/she must ask for work from their respective BDOs, who have been designated as PO MGNREGA. “Every job seeker will be given employment within 15 days. On being provided employment and measurement of work taken thereof, muster rolls will be filled and uploaded in the NREGA-Soft MIS,” he added. The concerned PO will prepare the bills, digitally sign them and generate Fund Transfer Order (FTO). Once FTO is generated, Kelei said it would directly go to the Program Division of the Ministry of Rural Development (New Delhi), who will ten sanction and transfer wage amount straight to the workers account through PFMS. “In any case no persondays will be allowed to generate in the MIS unless the jobcard holders do the work.

NPF P&IC refutes allegations against Rio DIMAPUR, SEP 7 (NPN): NPF Press & Information Cell (P&IC) has refuted the statement issued by NPF Media & Press Bureau (M&PB), saying the “amusingly frustrated and un-parliamentary tirades and accusations” in the media against NPF president and Lok Sabah MP, Neiphiu Rio was “sheer jealousy to vilify the commanding image of Neiphiu Rio, representing Nagaland. In a press note, P&IC rather said it was a blessing for Nagaland to have Rio, a veteran politician, as the lone Lok Sabha MP. “Despite his invaluable contributions to Nagaland, for the general public and the party men and women, leading the NPF and its DAN alliance, garnering people’s mandate to such height, for three consecutive general elections; the way the party tortured Neiphiu Rio is excruciatingly unfair,” P&IC stated. It further pointed out

Abu Salem

Khan, Riyaz Siddiqui, Tahir Merchant and Abdul Quayyum was separated from the main case as they were arrested subsequently. Dossa died of cardiac arrest at J J Hospital in Mumbai, shortly after being convicted, on June 28. The court had held that Tahir Merchant was amongst the main conspirators. The court had also rejected Firoz’s defence that he was not Firoz Khan but one ‘Hamza.’ The prosecution proved that he was a prominent and “trusted” member of the Dossa gang, and participated in all the “landings” of weapons effected by Dossa brothers in Raigad district, the court had held.

special leave petition. P&IC said Rio, whose life is an open book, had served steadfastly for the cause of the Nagas in particular and public purposes at the national level in general. Experiences show that those who support noble cause inevitably meet attempts of stigmatization, and the present accusation is no lesser than one of such category P&IC added. Since Rio commands all the support, P&IC said it stoutly refute the accusations and appeal to all party men, women and the public not to be swayed by “unfounded, baseless and statements of frustrated elements.” Hitting out at “the erstwhile NPF president”, Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu’s claim that “NPF and BJP were natural allies”, P&IC wondered why Dr. Shürhozelie had moved to forcefully disqualify the three BJP MLAs when they merged

with the BJP from NCP? However, P&IC said when BJP supported the majority NPF legislators group, Dr. Shürhozelie immediately severed all ties with the BJP without any second thought. P&IC said it was a fact that over 2/3rd majority of NPF legislators had asked Dr. Liezietsu to step down, “due to the untold hardship faced by the NPF legislators and organisational leaders over the excessively autocratic and dictatorial style of functioning and handling the party by the former president.” However, P&IC said Dr. Liezietsu “did not care to give ear.” After a grace period of 15 days was given to Dr. Liezietsu to resign, P&IC said Rio was urged upon by the majority legislators on July 29, 2017 to take up the responsibility as the NPF interim president, which was accepted by Rio on August 1, 2017.

In this regard, Kelei has asked all MGNREGA workers both under bank covered blocks and unbanked blocks in the State to open their bank accounts immediately. He further informed that the jobcard holders, interested to work at the rate of Rs. 177 perday as their wage, may demand works from the concerned BDOs so that they would be provided works within 15 days. The secretary has therefore directed all the BDOs and junior engineers/SOs to remain in their respective station and assist the jobcard holders. Presently 46,894 active MGNREGA workers have opened their bank accounts linked with Aadhar and are ready for DBT. A total of 1.79 lakh MGNREGA workers have been verified with Aadhar and are in the process of opening their bank accounts. Kelei also informed that the state currently has 4.25 lakh active jobcards with 5.82 lakh active MGNREGA workers.

Taxi driver murder case: NSCN (K) clarifies

DIMAPUR, SEP 7 (NPN): NSCN (K) through its MIP on Thursday said it was extremely disturbed after two of the three arrested persons involved in the murder of Swuduve Nakro, a taxi driver, were identified as NSCN (K) members. To s e t t h e r e c o r d straight, MIP said that the accused Daniel Yimchunger defected to NSCN/GPRN by claiming himself as “sgt. maj” in 2013. He was therefore kept under observation/probation awaiting confirmation by GHQ, but even before the new Naga Army Registration number could be issued, he was arrested by the security forces in Kohima and sentenced to imprisonment. Since then, Daniel had no association with NSCN/GPRN in any capacity, MIP said. “It is also ascertained that Daniel (Cont’d on p-8) was released from the prison

but chose not to join our formation”, MIP said. He was again arrested in 2015 in Kohima and thereafter, his activities remained unknown. Therefore, MIP said that the recovery of tax challans was an implication that he was among many extortionists committing crimes especially in and around Kohima and Dimapur in the guise of NSCN cadre. MIP also clarified that the other accused Toishe Aye, who claimed to be a ‘captain’ of NSCN (K), was “extremely illogical and a very pathetic self-acclamation”. Being an “established regular criminal”, MIP said he was apprehended by Kohima and Dimapur Urban commands of NSCN/GPRN prior to 2015 on several occasions for issuing threats, extortions and committing other petty crimes using NSCN’s name. Bengaluru, Sep 7 (IANS): The family of slain journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh on Thursday said they would wait for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to find the culprits and would only approach the court if it fails. “We will give all the cooperation the SIT needs,” Lankesh’s sibling Indrajit Lankesh told reporters here at a press conference. “We will wait for the SIT to give us information and clues on the killers.” Lankesh, 55, editor of popular Kannada tabloid Gauri Lankesh Patrike, was shot dead at her Bengaluru home by three unidentified assailants on Tuesday night. Seven shots were fired at her, of which two hit her in the chest and one in the forehead. “The CCTV footage has found the image of the killer. The police can find some clues through her phone as well,” he said. “ We h ave k n ow n (Karnataka Chief Minister) Siddaramaiah on a personal level and our mother (Indira Lankesh) has also requested him to ensure justice to Gauri.” “But if the SIT fails to find her killers, then we will approach the court and think of a Central Bureau of Investigation probe,” he said. “Our motive is not just to find the killers but to know who was behind the killing,” said Gauri’s sister, Kavitha Lankesh. “Gauri’s death should not be politicised,” the siblings added. “She had no personal enmities, only ideological adversaries,” Indrajit said. “She was condemning right-wing extremists through her publication, which might be the reason for her murder.” “However, other intentions cannot be ruled out,” Indrajit said. “People are branding her as a Naxalite, but she was only trying to bring them into the mainstream,” he added. The name of the force was changed to Sashastra Seema Bal in 2003, following the 1999 Kargil conflict. It was then tasked with guarding the Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders on the country’s eastern flank. “The transfer of the civilian SSB cadre will begin once the long-awaited cadre restructuring of the force is approved and implemented. All this will take about a year to take shape,” the official said. The blueprint envisages that once these officials are transferred to the IB, they will be “utilised for different activities related to intelligence, keeping in view the expertise and proficiency of the incumbents”.

Mumbai, Sep 7 (PTI): Tolerance is the “culture and commitment” of India and it is “our constitutional duty” to protect it, Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said here Thursday. Any type of violence and anarchy is a conspiracy to weaken the fabric of the country’s social harmony and India’s strength of unity in diversity. “Our Government will not allow any destructive agenda to dominate our development agenda,” the minister said at an event here. His remarks come in the backdrop of the outrage over the killing of Kannada journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh, known for her leftleaning outlook and forthright views on Hindutva politics, by unidentified assailants at the entrance of her residence in Raj Rajeshwari Nagar in Bengaluru on Tuesday night. Naqvi said the poor and weaker sections of society have the first right to resources of the country and the Narendra Modi government is committed to the progress of every section of the society. He was speaking after inaugurating the ‘New IndiaWe Resolve to Make’ photo exhibition cum cultural event at the Bandra railway station jointly organised by Parliamentary Affairs Ministry and Container Corporation of India.

She also approved financial assistance out of the Raksha Mantri Ex-Servicemen Fund, a statement said. Sitharaman, a former Commerce and Industry Minister, was elevated to Cabinet Minister rank and given charge of the crucial defence portfolio in Sunday’s cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She could not take charge until Thursday as Arun Jaitley, who was holding additional charge of Defence, was on a visit to Japan for a bilateral dialogue. Sitharaman is the first woman to hold full-time charge of the defence portfolio. In the past, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi held the portfolio twice -- from December 1 to December 21, 1975, and January 14, 1980, to January 15, 1982.

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS): Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday assumed charge as India’s first fulltime woman Defence Minister, and asserted she would be a “round-theclock” Minister, with focus on preparedness of the armed forces, welfare of soldiers and indigenous defence production. Sitharaman was received at South Block, which houses the Defence Ministry, by predecessor Arun Jaitley, Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre, Defence Secretary Sanjay Mitra, Secretary Defence Production A.K. Gupta, Chairman DRDO S. Christopher and other senior officials. Two priests were present at her office to offer prayers as she took over the new charge. “I shall ensure that all defence priorities are well attended to. I will be available round the clock,” Sitharaman said after taking charge. “My priority will definitely be the preparedness of the armed forces. It is important that the armed forces receive all the attention in terms of getting necessary endowment and equipment to perform their duties with the best of equipment available,” she said. “I will attend to all long-pending issues (relat-

New Delhi, Sep 7 (PTI): Over 2,000 personnel of a “dying” paramilitary cadre will be “transferred” to the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to boost the on-ground presence of the agency on the eastern borders, where India is bolstering its defences by building roads and other military infrastructure. A total of 2,765 posts of the civilian cadre of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) will be shifted to the IB command over the next year. Of these posts, 2,039 are operational. “The civil wing of the SSB should be transferred to the IB lock, stock and barrel, including land, physical infrastructure, equipment among others,” a government blueprint, accessed by PTI, said. A top security official privy to the “ambitious” plan said a 300-page proposal for the transfer of the assets -- both manpower and infrastructure -- had been prepared at the SSB headquarters here and had been vetted by the home ministry and the office of the national security advisor (NSA) for final implementation. He added that the manpower of the civil wing of the SSB, which is termed as “dying” as it does not have promotional and work avenues, would be deployed to bolster the IB’s presence in the eastern border areas, where these officials have worked for long. The average age of the cadre, the official said, was above 50 years and the personnel had done a lot of

PANCHKULA, Sep 7 (Agencies): The special investigation team (SIT) probing into the violence case involving key Dera Sacha Sauda members Aditya Insaan, Honeypreet Insaan and Surender Dhiman Insaan, on Wednesday revealed that the dera had pumped at least Rs 5 crore to fuel violence after sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted for rapes in Panchkula. The investigations r eve a l e d t h a t d e r a ’s Panchkula branch head Chamkaur Singh was the key person in procuring and spending the money received from dera management. Chamkaur, a resident of Dhakoli in Mohali district, has gone along missing with his family after the registration of sedition case against him on the HC direction on August 28. Like Panchkula, the dera had sent money to various places in Punjab, where violence had broken

o u t a f t e r G u r m e e t ’s conviction. Sources said the dera followers were also told that they would get compensation in case of loss of life during the violence. “More details will emerge after we arrest Chamkaur. Our teams are conducting raids at his possible hideouts,” Haryana director general of police (DGP) B S Sandhu said. He added had some more persons, who were behind the violence or had provided logistics support, were on police radar. “One prominent person in the case is a horticulture scientist, who is also believed to have pumped money for inciting violence,” he said. The dera followers had started converging at Panchkula, where Gurmeet was to attend court hearing in rape cases against him, since August 23. Dhiman, Chamkaur and some local residents had arranged langar (community kitchen) for them.

Sub:Your defamatory statements in the above referred articles against three Advocates in particular and the Members of the Bar in general. Sir, On behalf of the High Court Bar Association, Kohima, Nagaland notice is served on each of you jointly and severally: 1. By the article published by you, Messers S.Wapang Lkr, Pursanen Jamir and Bendang you have accused two members of the Bar Mr.Wati Jamir and Mr.Imkong Jamir of acting against the interests of the Nagas by appearing, for Non-Locals in PIL. As such you demand that the Ao Senden take appropriate steps even to the extent of penalizing and ex-communicating them from the Ao community. 2. You, T. Atu Jamir in your article in Tir Yimyim on 27.8.17 support the accusations of the person above named. You say that the two Advocates are the juniors of Mr. C.T.Jamir, Senior Advocate and that the senior should have instructed them not to act against the interests of the Nagas. You also say “our Naga Lawyers are drunk with money” and “bartering away Nagaland”. In your article, you brand the entire legal fraternity as unchristian and profiteers. 3. In the General Body Meeting held on 4.9.17, your articles were discussed threadbare. The members were of the unanimous opinion that your articles displayed complete ignorance about the Rule of Law. Twin failures

hat can people of Nagaland expect when their elected representatives, instead of tending to their constitutional duties, are continually busy fighting over loaves and fishes of offices and most shamefully, show no concern about the utterly deplorable roads marked with pot-holes and long hours of power failure where ‘consumers’ get hardly six hours or so of electricity. In fact, road connectivity is taken for granted that they exist without saying. Even power, in its erratic ways, is still expected to provide people not only lighting but enabling entrepreneurs to pursue business without fearing when and how long the lights will go out? These are issues that have dogged Nagaland since mid-2000s and presently it is 2017. That means it is over ten years since Nagaland had roads that were motorable. Deplorable road conditions in Nagaland are mute testimony to the report card of the government. In an era where other states have four or six lane highways, Nagaland is unable to even have even an all-weather single-lane road. The stretch of NH 29(Dimapur to Kohima) has been reduced to a one-lane road that looks like a colony road. A series of reports with photos from far flung districts, published in this daily, clearly indicate that neglected potholes have virtually turned into ponds. Funds provided by the centre to the state for roads has been either siphoned off or misused as evident by various reports appearing in the local media. It may be recalled, that the ministry of surface transport during 2000, had okayed proposal to turn the double-lane NH 29 to a four-lane highway, along the DimapurChumukedima stretch. Following the decision of the surface transport ministry, the state government had issued notifications reaffirming the National Highway Act 1988 wherein 75 feet from the centre of the road on either side, was deemed to be the road reservation area. The other big failure of the decades is power. When the power loss in Nagaland is almost 50% and double the national average, it only calls for serious probe on why this abnormal figure continues to plague power supply and most interestingly, accepted as that for so many years. Such inefficiency cannot be allowed to get away under the guise of ‘transmission loss’, when consumers are handed contestable bills owing to improper metering or inefficiency. Given the fact that there are no industries, what it means is that even domestic consumption cannot be met. The north east generates adequate power which can feed the entire region and during monsoon, the quantity should be more than enough to spare. The Association of Power Engineers Nagaland (APEN) has lamented that the department of power (DoP) has seen its annual budget decreasing as against the rise in maintenance of ever expanding infrastructure. In the past several years, it was almost a regular feature of the department to announce loss amounting to around of over Rs.100 crore annually which was blamed on supposed theft and pilferage. The accumulated total loss from all these has been pegged at around 55% to 60% which is equivalent to 30MW to 40MW out of the total power that the state receives. The two issues need to be fixed and immediately by the government of the day and it is expected that the departments responsible will address the issues with responsibility.

DailyDevotion Springs Of Benignity The water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water. —John 4:14 The picture Our Lord gives is not that of a channel but a fountain. Be being filled, and the sweetness of vital relationship to Jesus will flow out of the saint as lavishly as it is imparted to him. If you find your life is not flowing out as it should, you are to blame; something has obstructed the flow. Keep right at the Source, and — you will be blessed personally? No, out of you will flow rivers of living water, irrepressible life. We are to be centres through which Jesus can flow as rivers of living water in blessing to every one. Some of us are like the Dead Sea, always taking in but never giving out, because we are not rightly related to the Lord Jesus. As surely as we receive from Him, He will pour out through us, and in the measure He is not pouring out, there is a defect in our relationship to Him. Is there anything between you and Jesus Christ? Is there anything that hinders your belief in Him? If not, Jesus says, out of you will flow rivers of living water. It is not a blessing passed on, not an experience stated, but a river continually flowing. Keep at the Source, guard well your belief in Jesus Christ and your relationship to Him, and there will be a steady flow for other lives, no dryness and no deadness. Is it not too extravagant to say that out of an individual believer rivers are going to flow? “I do not see the rivers,” you say. Never look at yourself from the standpoint of — “Who am I?” In the history of God’s work you will nearly always find that it has started from the obscure, the unknown, the ignored, but the steadfastly true to Jesus Christ.

Political theology series 2: Should the Bible be read politically?

M

any people assume that the Bible is merely a religious book. Thus the Bible, according to them, has no relevance to matters of politics. In my observation even many well-meaning Naga Christians have also bought into this view. That’s why they don’t use the Bible in application to politics. Without a doubt, it is too easy to read our own prejudices into the Bible and allow our subjective perspectives and vested interests to be imposed on the biblical text, thereby breaking the first rule of hermeneutics. When this happens, the Bible can be reduced to a convenient source of supporting almost anything, including any socio-political agenda. This is wrong and dangerous. On the other hand, we must also remember that the Bible often contains some core truths, or fundamental life principles, that can be found across various periods of human history. In other words, there are always some biblical truths that transcend time and

are therefore normative. And with this in mind, we must learn to discern the common possible themes between the political societies of biblical times and the very different societies of today. In doing so, our objective should be to understand the teaching of the Bible and its relevance to modern political issues. To d ay, m o r e a n d more Christians are rediscovering the political dimension of the message of the Bible. In his book entitled The Bible in Politics: How to Read the Bible Politically, Richard Bauckham goes at great length to argue his case to help his readers relate biblical teaching to current political issues. According to him, “This is really a return to normality, since the notion that biblical Christianity has nothing to do with politics is little more than a modern Western aberration, which would not have been entertained by the Church in most periods and places of its history.” Reading the Old Tes-

tament portion politically Testament ethics. While is rather easy, because this is true in a sense, of the fact that much we must also remember of the Old Testament is that the ethics of human addressed to a people of government found in the God which was a political old dispensation are still entity and for much of instructive for our politiits history had at least cal life today. In addition, some degree of political when we say that the New autonomy. It is directly Testament ethics superconcerned with the order- sede the Old Testament ing of Israel’s political ethics, that should be unlife, the forderstood to mulation of Mazie Nakhro mean that Israel’s nathe old ethitional laws and govern- cal bar has been raised ing policies, the conduct in the new dispensation of political affairs, the --- that is, they are not responsibilities of rulers necessarily erased, beas well as subjects, and cause they are based on so on. As such, how can the unchanging character we not read the Old Tes- and purposes of God for tament politically? To fail humankind in general. to do so is to ignore the Now what does the deeper historical contexts New Testament have to and miss the secondary say about politics? Doesn’t messages recorded for it have very little to say on our sake, especially as the treatment of political it relates to applying the matters compared to what Bible to politics today. we find in the Old TestaStill there are those ment? On the surface, who would argue that the this seems to be true if political teachings of the we judge by the amount Old Testament are not of textual materials or applicable to us, since the direct Bible references New Testament ethics, given to political matespecially the Sermon ters. But again we must on the Mount, are more remember that this is beadvanced than the Old cause the New Testament

is addressed primarily to a politically powerless minority in the Roman Empire. As subjects and citizens (and in some cases, slaves), they hardly had any political influence, though they occasionally hoped to impress the governing authorities by prophetic witness and good behavior. To put it another way, their political responsibilities were mostly obedience to the governing authorities. So, this possibly explains why there are not many explicitly political texts in the New Testament. And yet this does not mean that the New Testament texts lack political implications. Remember, there is always a historical context which occasioned the texts. This implies that in as much as the texts are rooted in some historical contexts, the texts will almost invariably include some political implications. Therefore, these texts will usually have, whether implicitly or explicitly, some political applications for us today. Lest someone still thinks that the New Testa-

ment writers ignored the subject of politics, let me add this: Both the first and the last books of the New Testament are very political in content. The Book of Matthew, for example, presents Jesus as the King of the Jews against the backdrop of other Roman rulers. Similarly, the Book of Revelation presents Jesus as the King of kings and the anti-Christ as the most evil king to come. Thus, the best and the worst of politics are contrasted in Revelation, with, of course, Christ winning and reigning over all at the end of time. To be sure, the Bible is not a textbook on politics. But it certainly talks about all areas of life, including the political aspect and our involvement in it. Failing to see this will only result in the loss of our own influence in society. Indeed, the Bible must still serve as our guidebook for shaping our political views and social actions. Now then, with all this in mind, try reading your Bible politically so that you can start thinking politics biblically.

Post-mortem

The Wolves are coming!

(From previous issue) The bald eagle represents the rare courage under fire and wisdom to foresee the dangers above us seen when thunder and lightning are striking our societal str uctures and those harmful deterrents harming our coming generations. The rivers represent the current of life flowing social norms through the sands of timeless ethos and priceless pathways springing from the spirit of forgiveness which becomes more vitriolic and emphatic when a balance of ambition and our aspiration are maintained from within and outside. The increased vegetation means that once our moral fabric and ethos a r e d e s t r oye d f o r o u r short-sightedness glory, our bounden duty in the interest for our generation is destabilized and annihilated. The erosion of morality and our crumbling edifices of our ethics get consolidated in the fertile soil of instability and insanity by our gregariousness and gullibility. All progress takes place behind our comfort zone. Only a crisis, real or perceived produces real change. Change does not take only time but it also takes a great commitment and sacrifice. Constantly working on one dimension and trying to gain for self at the cost of generations will never yield any blessings for the land or its people. The wolves through their hunting down of the meek and the docile deers protected the nature’s bountiful blessings. The deers were living a very easy life, comfortable life but what they ever did was eat and wander around aimlessly which they finally lose all when the predators wolves came suddenly. By their nature of creation, they were way too weak to fight against them and stand for themselves. We need to fear those tendencies in the human mind that make for obtuseness. We need to fear the destructive influence of the hostile exploitative forces. We need to fear the physical, mental and emotional distortion that this corrupted age has wrought on the lives of the society. We need to greatly fear our own tired, confused, apprehensions ever ready

of saying we cannot do it and surrendering ourselves even before the battle starts. We would be wiser if we assume control of the uncertainties and make them into certainties so as to contribute to our best potential, to get a new grip on ourselves and for our descendants. Still waters, you know, run deep. Let me also say that deep waters run without din. When the river is very deep, there will not be half so much noise as when it is but shallow, and therefore rattles and raves over the stones which it scarcely covers. Only fools are said to test the depth of the waters with both their feet. Yet standing forever on the banks of river will never make us to reach the other side unless we either make a boat to sail across or swim across it. Many a times, friendships are forged and with people who we had never met or would never. We should be particularly wary of the siren song history. George Santayana famously said.’ Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it’. Our history as a separate nation with a mind on its own was always been our pride but now honour on the edge. Let us rebuild our glorious past once again. In the elusive search for bliss and fortune our honours are sacrificed at the altar of vanity and easy money. Let’s climb together and fall together as a people. A progressive society races against time to keep itself stable and secure everytime. Unless we provide ourselves our own roadmap we will tend to get lost midway. It has proved to be a calm misdemeanor .It is important to accept the hard truth and harsh realities otherwise one’s vision becomes clouded with misplaced patriotism and false expectations. Throwing out the baby instead of the bathwater will result in only our own folly and lost. But we have expediently adopted the short-sighted cavalier and expedient stop-go approach. Those timeless truths and ageless determination still create waves and is wind beneath our winds. Feats and fears that broke the conventions and mindsets of divisions will only increase. The issue here is not of legality or corruption. It is one of perpetrating a culture

which is eating into the entrails of the psyche of the populace. Despite greater development and empowerment we are providing a false sense of entitlement so that they sit at hoping that those who stand and wait also serve. Aping other cultures by the younger lot is one sad thing. This is the reason why we are in the midst of losing our identity because we are imitating others when we don’t even know our true self. Maybe we suffer because we lack faith in ourselves and lack moorings in our faith. Building the inclusive approach and emphasizing cooperation and building mutual trusts and understanding with the fringe community sentiments is the need of the moment. Otherwise it will lead us to live on the margins as in the past. The present times seems like a gathering storm in the heartland but majority of ours is a concern fraught with pushback, perils and politics. If the Naga ship of unity is ever to be sailed let it not be dashed on the rocks of narrow domestics differences and divisions. Speculation is always weaker than invective. With the total system collapse and completely in shambles we need to pick and start from the scratch. Changing perceptions and the emerging concerns may always happen but whatever we do or wherever we may go, we will always circle back to ourselves. The sense of fore-bonding pervades our socio-political environment which has slowly crept into masses mind has now galvanized to work towards a transformed society fuelled by changed mindset of young minds yearning for a change. We blame the leaders but the system we have created ourselves have got us in this lurch. We have been psycho-conditioned and so comfortable with the lies and so fooled that there is no other choice. Change should start with ourselves first then only can we bring change in every sphere. So are we going to be the wolves or the deers? The choice is ours. May we be enlightened today for a better tomorrow. (Concluded) Jonah Achumi

Fare Revision: Fair Revision

T

he RTA, Dimapur has done a reasonable work in revising the auto-rickshaw fare, 2017. Fare price have been fixed taking into account both the passenger and driver. With no other means of public transport, the public of Dimapur solely rely on auto-rickshaw. It is an aspect of our city. The commuters of auto-rickshaw are mostly people in need, who don’t have a vehicle or who don’t know how to drive/ride. Being a carrier of the needy, the RTA has applied proper reasoning/logic in revising its fare. For which, the public (especially the passenger) ought to praise the RTA, Dimapur in thinking about our welfare. The DDADU has resented at the revision as unfair for town trip in 2014 was Rs. 35 and now(2017), it’s Rs. 30 for specified route and town area. The factor was not taken into consideration that in 2014, petrol prices was above Rs. 70 and only during Oct-Dec ‘14, it came down to above mid Rs. 60 range. Then petrol prices in 2015 came to below the mid Rs. 60 range even touching the above mid Rs. 50 range. In Feb 2015, RTA revised the town trip to Rs. 30 but it was not followed in spirit. Since then, petrol prices remained in the Rs. 60 range touching the Rs. 70 range once this year (2017). In other parts of the country, fare prices go up and down with change in fuel prices. However, in Nagaland, fare prices keep on going up or remain the same as the last hike fare even though fuel prices come down. In 2014, even though hire rate was Rs. 35 and passenger rate was Rs. 10, fare prices of hire rate was hiked to Rs. 40 and passenger rate to Rs. 15 on account of hike in fuel prices by the auto drivers; without any notification by the RTA. Ever since, it remained

the same till date. Never was the fare decreased by the auto drivers even when petrol price descended. In Dimapur city, the distance for a town trip is at the most 2-3 km max. Even in case of passenger rate from DC Court Junction, Signal Angami, Thahekhu and Kuda, the distance to main town is 3-4 km max. On an average(considering all situations), auto-rickshaws give a mileage of 2025 km per litre. Doing the math, this is too much according to the distance and rate from a layman perspective. However the RTA considering all the factors of fuel consumption, waiting period between trips, empty running, total trips possible in a day, etc, must have set the revised fare for the welfare of it’s citizen; both the driver and passenger. Getting a two-wheeler saves lot than taking an auto-rickshaw. However, two-wheeler is costly and not everyone can ride one. For an ordinary wage earner, it will take a lot to purchase one considering its security aspect too. So, auto-rickshaw is the only remedy for the needy and helpless people of Dimapur unless district administration provides bus service to relieve the needy poor people of the high fare prices. Mostly the down trodden, hapless and needy public require the service of auto-rickshaw. I, and on behalf of the passengers, appeal to the DDADU to understand the problems faced by the commuters/commoners as we both need each other for our survival and not to strike against the RTA revised rate as it is revised for our overall welfare. Please think for you and for your majority poor passengers too. We are all the same trying to make our living, whether by driving or being a wage-earner. Ketou Nagi, Dimapur

NEW DELHI, Sep 7 (PTI): The state-owned telecom firm BSNL expects to start field trial of 5G services by the end of this financial year, company’s chairman and MD Anupam Shrivastava said on Wednesday. “We had interaction with Nokia last week (on 5G). Next we are going to present about our requirements after which field trail concept is there. It should start before the end of this financial year,” Shrivastava told reporters today. The state-run firm has started discussion with Larsen & Toubro and HP for end devices that will be required for 5G services. He was speaking on the sidelines of signing its knowledge sharing agreement on 5G technology with network firm Coriant. Under the terms of the agreement, Coriant and BSNL will cooperate to accelerate network architecture and service innovation for 5G services. “This (MoU with Coriant) is only knowledge sharing agreement. There are no commercials involved. We are at nascent stage. By this agreement, we will get to know more about 5G through this and other agreements,” Shrivastava said. He said the speed of the 5G is going to be much faster than 4G and it will use same 4G and 3G network but with optimised network.

(From p-1) Also, “the accused being non-Sumi in origin, the NSCN went to the extent of tracing his parents and were given intimation of the final warning and quit notice (Dimapur and Kohima) issued to Toishe but was rebutted as Toishe having already been disowned even by the Sumi foster parents”, MIP said. MIP also clarified that Toishe was never “recruited, trained, enrolled or not even a defector absorbed into Naga Army formation at any point of time”. Therefore, as per the record and available testimonies, both the accused were “jailbirds frequenting Kohima and Dimapur jails on regular intervals”, MIP said. It was also established fact that the accused were “habitual offenders and therefore quite obvious that they cannot afford themselves the burden and risk to remain enrolled in the NSCN/GPRN particularly during the present hostile situation and yet continue to freely engage themselves in criminal activities all the year round”. In the light of above, NSCN/GPRN has unequivocally denied involvement by any of its cadres in the heinous murder. Further, while conveying condolences to the aggrieved family members and also condemning the “vilest inhuman” act of the trio, the NSCN/ GPRN assured to the Nagas, that it would not remained “mute or inactive should there be miscarriage of justice”.

The gover nment is planning 2,000 driving schools on two acres each and called on the industry to join hands to make the skill development dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi a big success. Outgoing SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) President Vinod Dasari hailed the government’s move towards reducing imports and pollution, saying the industry fully backs it. “Already, we are leapfrogging to BS VI from BS IV within three years, which is the shortest time anywhere in the world. However, what we are asking is consistency in policy, which once formed must not be changed as the auto industry has long gestation period to introduce new technology,” he said. Asked why the BS IV norms were not implemented for 10 years across the country when the industry was ready with the technology, he cited nonavailability of fuel.

P&IC also made known that the second North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) conclave held at Delhi on September 5, attended by Nagaland chief minister, T.R. Zeliang, NPF president and MP (LS) Neiphiu Rio and NPF Manipur unit president, Awangbow Newmai cannot in any way be criticized. P&IC said Rio attended the conclave after he received a formal invitation from the BJP national president through the NEDA convenor. “The minority group’s chagrin and unethical impropriety can only be surmised as abinge of extreme hopelessness which explains the confused state of mind,” P&IC stated. He sought to put the entire issue in perspective, saying imports and pollution are the twin problems as India’s import bill stood at a huge Rs 7 lakh crore per annum, a big drag on the economy. “Now, the government has decided to start 15 industries for second generation ethanol. Ethanol can easily be produced from agro-based cotton straw, wheat straw, rice straw, bagass and bamboo. Alternative fuel is import substitute, cost effective and pollution free,” Gadkari added. He promised that the proposed vehicle scrapping policy stuck due to GST issues will be sorted out soon. “Now, the GST Council is formed. We are preparing the note. I am going to the finance minister and after that, we will move this Cabinet note. In the GST Council, we will present the note and take an opinion of stakeholders. Mumbai, Sep 7 (PTI): In a major shift in its domestic route network strategy, Jet Airways will now focus on providing direct connectivity between tier-II cities as it aims to penetrate deeper into such markets. With a market share of a little over 18 per cent, Naresh Goyalpromoted Jet Airways group is facing an intense competition from the low cost carriers, which currently account for over 70 per cent of the total domestic traffic. This has compelled the Mumbai-based full service carrier to move to operating station-to-station flights from station-to-hub services till recently. “For Jet Airways, it’s not only about connecting stations to hubs but it is about con-

It is in the last stage and will be done as early as possible,” he disclosed, adding that the government will soon bring in a policy on electric vehicles. Cautioning against any dilly-dallying tactics, he said the future is not of petrol and diesel, but of alternative fuel. “I urge you (carmakers) politely to do research. First, when I urged you for electric vehicles, you said the battery is costly. I coaxed you to start at least. Now, the batteries cost 40 per cent less. And if you start now, the cost will be reduced further in mass production. Teething trouble is everywhere,” he explained. NEW DELHI, SEP 7 (AGENCIES): Carmakers producing vehicles that run on traditional fuel, take note -- Union minister Nitin Gadkari has a clear message: Go for alternative fuel, else he will not mind “bulldozing” them in his bid to check pollution and imports. According to the road transport and highways minister, a Cabinet note on electric vehicles is ready that will take care of charging stations. “We should move towards alternative fuel... I am going to do this, whether you like it or not. And I am not going to ask you. I will bulldoze it. For pollution, for imports, my ideas are crystal clear... The government has a crystal-clear policy to reduce imports and curb pollution,” Gadkari said at SIAM’s annual convention here. ‘India should resolve Kashmir issue through political means’

Is l a m a ba d, S e p 7 (PTI): India should resolve the Kashmir issue through “political and diplomatic” means rather than “abusing” Pakistan, army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa has said. Bajwa, while addressing a Defence Day gathering in Rawalpindi last night, said people of South Asia need peace for prosperity. Accusing India of “killing” innocent people on the LoC, he said the country should give peace a chance. “It is in interest of India that for a durable solution to the issues (in Kashmir), it should prefer political and diplomatic process instead of abusing Pakistan and using bullets against Kashmiris,” the Chief of Army Staff said. Bajwa said Pakistan wants to address the Kashmir issue through dialogue. “Welfare of millions of people of these two countries is linked with permanent peace. But for it to happen, it is necessary that

innocent and unarmed people on the LoC are not targeted through a planned way,” he said. Pakistan will continue to extend “political, moral, and diplomatic support” to Kashmiris for their right to self- determination in line with the UN Security Council resolutions, he said. He accused India of trying to destabilise Pakistan through “militancy and usurping its share of water”. The army chief also claimed that Pakistan was a responsible nuclear state. “Our nuclear programme is just a deterrent against the enemy that introduced this unconventional war in the region,” he said. Bajwa said that Pakistan was against terrorism. “We are against war and terrorism. We want relationship with all countries based on mutual respect and equality,” he said. Pakistan celebrates the Defence Day to mark the 1965 war with India.

Following Pyongyang’s test on Sunday, Abe spoke to Putin over the phone, and reminded him of the important role Russia can play as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in reigning in North Korea. Earlier on Wednesday, the Russian president warned against cornering North Korea, and reiterated Moscow’s stance that sanctions against the regime in Pyongyang would not help resolve the problems on the Korean peninsula.

Tokyo, Sep 7 (IANS): Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe warned North Korea against continuing its current missile and nuclear weapons development policies. Prior to leaving for Vladivostok to participate in the Eastern Economic Forum, Abe said that Japan would coordinate with Russia and international community to make North Korea understand that there would be no future for the country if it continues to pursue its nuclear ambitions, Efe news reported. During his visit to Russia, Abe is also scheduled to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the situation in the wake of Pyongyang’s latest nuclear test on Sunday and the August 29 launch of a ballistic missile that flew over Japan. During the meeting, their second in less than four months, Abe was expected to seek Putin’s backing to increase pressure on

Beijing, Sep 7 (PTI): China and India should shed their mindset of regarding each other as rivals or threats and make sure that their differences do not go out of control, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Thursday. In his first comments on India-China ties after this week’s meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, Wang said bilateral relations were “affected and undermined” during the past few months “for clear reasons”. Without mentioning the 73-day standoff between the militaries of the two countries at Dokalam, Wang said, “going forward, the two sides need to work together to follow-up on the consensus reached by the two leaders and make sure bilateral relations stay on track.” Speaking to the media

He said roads and telecommunications systems were wrecked and recovery would take months, if not years. A 2-year-old child was killed as a family tried to escape a damaged home during the storm, Browne told the AP. One death also was reported in the nearby island of Anguilla, where officials reported extensive damage to the airport, hospitals, shelters and school and said 90 percent of roads are impassible, according to the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency. Da m a s c u s, S e p 7 (IANS): A total of 978 civilians have been killed over the past three months by US-led airstrikes on Syria’s northern city of Raqqa, a monitor group reported on Wednesday. The death toll includes 234 children and 163 women, Xinhua new agency quoted the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights as saying. Casualties have been increasing in the past three months when the US-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched an offensive to dislodge the Islamic State (IS) from their de facto capital in Raqqa. The 18-yearold France international striker grew up in Paris, playing for Monaco before joining PSG on loan last week, with a deal in place for him to make the move permanent next year for a reported fee of £166 million ($215 million, 180 million). Mbappe has now revealed Arsenal’s interest,

telling the Daily Telegraph: “Yes, I met with Arsene Wenger, who is a great coach. He has a great reputation here in France, he’s well-respected and knows how to develop young players. This was a real option for me. But, of course, Paris

St Germain was the main option.” Mbappe opted to work under PSG coach Unai Emery in a front line also featuring £200 million world record signing Neymar, who made his blockbuster move from Barcelona in August.

I feel it is already a success,” said Bhutia, the former chairman of the technical committee of the All India Football Federation (AIFF). “There has been a huge improvement in infrastructure at the grassroot level. More than 100 football academies have registered with the AIFF. More than 50 clubs have registered for the U-19

Asked about India’s chances in the tournament, Bhutia said: “As far as the performance of the boys is concerned, it will be tough for them (to wriggle out of the group stage). But it is not impossible. They will have to play their best and you never know (what will happen) in football.” Bhutia was part of the committee which appointed the current U-17 team head coach Luis Norton de Matos, in place of Nicolai Adam who was sacked after the players complained to the AIFF about his abusive behaviour. The U-17 World Cup will be played in six cities across India - New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi, Guwahati and Margao - from October 6-28.

New Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS): Hosts India will face current world champions Australia in their campaign opener of the FIH men’s Hockey World League (HWL) Final to be held in Bhubaneswars Kalinga Stadium from December 1 to 10. NEW DELHI, Sep 7 (PTI): The Under-17 FIFA World Cup is one month away but Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia feels that the upcoming tournament has already made its impact with several academies and age group clubs cropping up in the country. Former India football captain Bhutia, who retired in 2011 after playing more than 100 matches for the country, agreed with the view of the football officials and the experts that the October 6-28 event, the first ever FIFA tournament in the country, will be a “game changer”. “This prestigious tournament will only help the country in its bid to raise the profile of football. If the players produce good results in the tournament, it will be a motivation for the country and the players to do even better (in future),” said Bhutia, who donned India colours from 1995 to 2011. Bhutia, who was considered the poster boy of Indian football for more than a decade, said because

New Market FC to face Keys completes all-American semis line-up Khriekesa FC in KTC Cup final Del Potro powers past Federer

N e w Yo r k , S e p 7 (Agencies): Madison Keys has made it an allAmerican women’s final four at the US Open. The No. 15 seed beat Kaia Kanepi 6-3 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time. S h e w i l l f a c e N o. 20 C oC o Va ndeweg he in the second semifinal, after ninth-seeded Venus Williams meets unseeded Sloane Stephens. It’s the first time four Americans have made the women’s semifinals at the

US Open since 1981, when Tracy Austin beat Martina Navratilova for the title. Chris Evert and Barbara Potter also made the last four. The last time it happened at any Grand Slam tournament was at Wimbledon in 1985, with Navratilova and Evert joined by Zina Garrison and Kathy Rinaldi. The US Open will be guaranteed its first allAmerican final since Serena Williams beat sister Venus in 2002. Vandeweghe, who is coached by Australia’s

Pat Cash, eliminated No.1 Karolina Pliskova in the quarters which means Spaniard Garbine Muguruza will become world No.1 after the tournament. Pliskova needed to at least match her achievement of last year by reaching the final to prevent Wimbledon champion Muguruza overtaking her. She had a set point in the opener against Vandeweghe but could not take it and the 20th seed completed a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 victory to reach her second grand slam semi-final of the season.

FIFA orders replay of SA, Senegal WC qualifier Paris, Sep 7 (IANS): FIFA ordered that the World Cup African zone qualifier between South Africa and Senegal to be replayed this November, following the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) decision to uphold the lifetime ban of match referee Jospeh Lamptey for match fixing. “The match will be replayed within the November 2017 international window, with the exact date to be confirmed in due course,” FIFA said in a statement on Wednesday, reports Xinhua news agency. In the matchup between the two sides on November 12, 2016, Lamptey awarded hosts South Africa a penalty for Senegal’s defender Kalidou Koulibaly’s hand ball. South Africa converted the spot kick

before going on to win the game, their only victory so far in the final phase of the World Cup African zone qualifiers. However, video replay clearly showed that the ball just hit Koulibaly’s knee and dropped on the pitch. The FIFA Disciplinary and Appeal Committees imposed a lifetime ban on Lamptey for match manipulation, which has recently been upheld by CAS. Senegal now sits third in the group, one point adrift Burkina Faso and Cape Verde. According to the FIFA World Cup regulations, the decision for the World Cup qualifier’s replay shall come into effect immediately, while being subject to confirmation by the Organising Committee for FIFA Competitions at its next meeting scheduled on September 14.

Anand faces ouster threat from WC

TBILISI, Sep 7 (PTI): Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Canadian Grandmaster Anton Kovalyov and now faces ouster threat from the World Chess Cup here. Having struggled in the second game of the first round that he eventually managed to draw, Anand’s dip in form continued against Kovalyov who kept his nerves in a thrilling game after a speculative piece sacrifice by the Indian ace. For the records, it was a Sicilian Najdorf wherein Anand continued with a typical variation he has been using off-late. Kovalyov got a slightly worse position in the middle game but stayed put with

Wenger brushes off talk of crisis at faltering Arsenal

Arsene Wenger

London, Sep 7 (Agencies): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has brushed off suggestions that the north London club are in the midst of a crisis three games into the season and called for perspective after their 4-0 defeat by Liverpool

ing a walk around the centre. As it tur ned out, Anand’s sacrifice was not enough to get any advantage and in the end Kovalyov’s extra piece had the final say. Down a point in the two-games mini-match, Anand will now have to win with black pieces in the return game. If Anand wins, tiebreak games of shorter duration will be played to determine the winner. The World Cup is a knock out event with two games under normal time control followed by Rapid or blitz games to determine the winner. The total prize money at stake is 1.6 million USD and the two will qualify to the next candidates’ tournament.

Nadal enter semis

World No. 1 Spaniard Rafael Nadal advanced to the US Open tennis semifinals with a clinical 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 rout of promising Russian teenager Andrey Rublev. In a quar ter-final match pitting a 15-time Grand Slam champion against an unseeded 19year-old making his first appearance on a big stage, Nadal’s experience proved to be a decisive factor. The Spaniard was rock-solid on both his return of serve and in the rallies, tracked down balls from sideline to sideline and expertly defended everything the Russian threw at him. Even though most points involved baseline exchanges, Nadal committed just 20 unforced errors and struck 21 winners. But the mistakes piled up for Rublev, who committed 43 unforced errors - an average of nearly two per game. The 31-year-old Spaniard also was coolly efficient on serve, getting broken just one time against a player with one of the best return games on the ATP Tour.

Kohima, Sep 7 (NPN): New Market FC beat Nagabazar FC by a solitary goal to enter the final of KTC Cup on Thursday. New Market FC will now take on Khriekesa FC in the final match on Saturday. The exciting encounter between the two rivals saw a competitive match. Both the teams failed to break the deadlock in the

stipulated time. Playing the extra minute time, Keyidwasaplung of New Market scored the winning goal through a free kick in the 102nd minute to seal their place in the final. Nagabazar FC got numerous chances to convert but failed to push behind the keeper till the final whistle. Stephen Rutsa (19), Cheneibemo Tungoe of New Market FC and Ko-

ratu Jourey, goalkeeper Lhiwete Koza (21) of New Market FC were cautioned with yellow cards. Rajesh Soundararajan, DC of Kohima was the match patron of the 2nd semi-final match. Australia earn series draw in Bangladesh Chittagong, Sep 7 (Agencies): Nathan Lyon scooped career-best figures of 13-154 as Australia beat Bangladesh by seven wickets in the second Test in Chittagong to deny the Tigers a first Test series win over them. O f f - s p i n n e r Lyo n added 6-60 to his firstinnings 7-94 to skittle Bangladesh for 157 on day four and become the leading wicket-taker for Australia in a two-Test series, with his 22 scalps topping the 18 J.J. Ferris took against England in 1887. Australia lost firstinnings centurion David Warner (22), Matt Renshaw (8) and Steve Smith (16) in their pursuit of 86 before Peter Handscomb (16no) and Glenn Maxwell (25no), who ended the game with a six, ushered them to a series-levelling triumph following their maiden Test match defeat to Bangladesh in Dhaka last week. Lyon was the star performer, though, as he fell one short of equal-

ling the record number of wickets in two-Test series, the 23 Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath collected against Pakistan in 2014. The 29-year-old’s fellow spinner, Steven O’Keefe (2-24), ended Lyon’s hopes of matching

Herath by bowling last man Mustafizur Rahman as Bangladesh were dismissed in 71.2 overs. Lyon (0) had been the last man to depart in Australia’s second dig, snicking Mustafizur (4-84) to Imrul Kayes at slip as

the tourists failed to add to their overnight 377-9. Lyon then had Tamim Iqbal (12) stumped, Imrul (15) caught at cover and Shakib Al Hasan (2) snaffled by Warner at slip as Bangladesh slumped to 43-5, before a 44-run stand

between captain Mushfiqur Rahim (21) and Sabbir Rahman (24) dragged the Tigers into the lead. Sabbir was eventually stumped skipping down the pitch to Lyon, who went on to remove Mominul Haque (29) and Taijul Islam (4) during his second 10-wicket haul in Test cricket. Lyon is now the leading wicket-taker in Tests in 2017, with his 46 scalps placing him above Indian spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja (44) and South Africa seamer Kagiso Rabada (39). Australia’s next Test is the Ashes opener against England in Brisbane on November 23 but the oneday side will return to action later this month for a five-match ODI series in India. Bangladesh, meanwhile, are moving on to a tour of South Africa, with the trip comprising two Tests, three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals.

Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro stunned Roger Federer in four sets to reach the US Open semi-finals. The 24th seed won 7-5 3-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-4 to reach the last four, thrilling his large contingent of supporters in New York. He goes on to face top seed Rafael Nadal, who earlier beat Russian teenager Andrey Rublev. Del Potro’s victory means Federer and Nadal will end another year having never played each other at the US Open. Top seed Nadal is now also guaranteed to keep hold of the number one ranking ahead of Federer. It is the sixth time the pair have been one match from meeting at Flushing Meadows, and their potential semi-final clash had dominated headlines throughout the tour nament. However, an out-ofsorts Federer was no match for Del Potro, who returned 48 hours after his epic fiveset win over Dominic Thiem to produce another thrilling victory. “I honestly was only thinking about tonight,” said Federer, 36. “My head didn’t even

wander during the match. I knew it was going to be a tough one.”

in their last Premier League game. The defeat was Arsenal’s second in a row, but the manager backed his team to respond when they host Bournemouth in the league on Saturday. “I could never understand what a crisis is,” Wenger told a news conference on Thursday. “It is important to focus on what is in front of you. Every single defeat is a crisis, yes? “I love and believe in my players and we need our fans behind the team... We will win back the points we have dropped away from home. It is vital to take some perspective.”
