PWD (R&B) Wokha informs DIMAPUR, SEP 6 (NPN): In view of the unstable and weak condition of Mikhe Bailey Bridge (steel bridge), located 52km from Wokha town along Wokha-Bokajan road, the Public Works Department (Road & Bridges) Wokha has advised the commuters to take precautionary measures while travelling along that bridge especially heavy vehicles above four tons. In a press release, PWD (R&B) Wokha executive engineer, Amyingo N. Meanwhile, the PWD (R&B) Wokha has requested the public to bear with the inconvenience.

station demanding that all accused be handed over to them. The vastly outnumbered police at the P.S. could not stop the huge crowd from entering the police station premises. However, situation was brought under control only after members of the All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) intervened. According to various accounts, late Swuduve leaves behind his wife and children. The victim was re-

plice, Daniel Yimchunger then joined Toishe and hit Nakro on the head with a club made of bamboo root and killing him. The duo later dumped the body below the marketing shed and proceeded towards Tseminyu. While on the way, Daniel called-up Avito Khotso, who was in Kohima at that time, to come to Tseminyu. After Avito’s arrival, all three accused proceeded towards Satakha where Toishe stayed back with local taxi and the other two-Daniel and Avito returned to Kohima on September 3, police stated. During the search operation in Kohima, police also seized 83 numbers of blank demand notes of vehicle Tax (2017-2018) and three numbers of detached blank information slips for union traders and contractors (yearly tax of 20172018) both issued by NSCN (K) from the house of Daniel Yimchunger. end of a rash of violence unleashed by lynch mobs, especially in the northern States. The court directed the Centre to respond to a submission by senior advocate Indira Jaising for Gandhi that the Centre cannot wash their hands of its constitutional responsibility under Article 256 to instruct the States to take “necessary” steps in law to save innocent human lives from fury of the mobs. The court said the Centre should reply to this argument made by Gandhi in the spirit of “co-operative federalism”. “Non-violence is the founding faith of this country. The Centre cannot turn its back on the violence. The States have the responsibility to lodge FIRs against these vigilantes,” Jaising submitted. “You have to stop it (violence),” Chief Justice Misra told Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the four northern States. The court asked Mehta to take instructions from the Centre, to specify its role under Article 256 and the steps it would take from its side to prevent any future incidents

of violence. Pointing out that most of the violent incidents had occurred on highways, Jaising said the States should take steps to initiate highway patrolling. The court directed the Chief Secretaries and the Directors General of Police of States to consult each other and respond to the court. The Centre shall also indicate its views on this issue. The court posted the case for hearing on September 22. In the previous hearing, the Centre said ending vigilantism and violence by cow protection groups is a ‘State subject’ and the Centre has no role to play, though it condemns all forms of violence. A bunch of petitions led by Congress activist Tehseen Poonawalla had sought criminal action against cow vigilante groups whose recent rampages and lynchings have seen communal tensions rise in the country. The petitions had also sought a direction to the Central and State governments to pull down all the videos of violence uploaded by cow vigilante groups from social media sites.

NEW DELHI, SEP 6 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked all States and Union Territories to appoint nodal police officers district-wise to crack down on and prosecute cow vigilante groups that engage in violence and mayhem, reports The Hindu. Four BJP-ruled States — Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat — accepted the apex court’s suggestion to appoint dedicated nodal police officers in the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to prevent cow vigilantes or gau rakshaks, as they call themselves, from “taking the law or becoming the law unto themselves.” A three-judge Bench of Chief Justive Dipak Misra, Amitava Roy, and A.M. Khanwilkar was hearing an intervention by Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, Tushar Gandhi, about the lack of responsibility and accountability shown by the Centre and State administrations even as cow vigilantes wreaked havoc and resorted to murder in broad daylight in the name of the cow. Dalits and Muslims have been at the receiving

both Air India and IndiGo airlines to consider having additional flights and to ensure that the flights were operated without any disruption. CMD Air India, Rajiv Bansal assured that Dimapur–Kolkata flights would be operated without any disruption while adding that he would look into the feasibility of operating another flight to Delhi via Guwahati. Zeliang further pointed out to the IndiGo officials that the discon-

tinuation of Dimapur-Delhi flight via Kolkata has caused immense hardship to passengers from Dimapur. Passengers are made to change flights at Kolkata which causes inconvenience and wastage of time, he told the IndiGo officials. The IndiGo officials while appreciating the chief minister for the continued support to IndiGo air operations, assured that the direct return flight would be resumed by end of September. Both Air India CMD and IndiGo officials assured that they would do everything possible to improve the services for Nagaland. Later, the chief minister also visited the newly constructed Nagaland House building at RK Puram, New Delhi and interacted with the construction firm, Confoss Constructions. The construction is expected to be completed soon.

DIMAPUR, SEP 6 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, PB Acharya, on Wednesday called upon the citizens to become nodal agents of change and also to be the change. Speaking on the occasion of the 24th Foundation Day celebration of the Nagaland University (NU) at Lumami Headquarters, Acharya, who is also the chief rector of NU, called upon the gathering to introspect and retrospect how far the university has reached. According to an official bulletin, Acharya said the university was conceived and established with vision by leaders for brighter and greater future. In this regard, the governor asked whether the vision was on the right track and said if not, then, it was time to change the mindset and go for more research in order to develop and prosper in peace.

Maintaining that the fruit of prosperity should reach everyone equally, the governor reminded the students that knowledge once acquired should be passed on. He also asked the students to connect with the people as knowledge achiev-

ers should also be givers. Acharya also stressed on the government’s Look East Policy and said it was for more development of the north eastern states of the country, adding Nagaland was also one of the beneficiaries. Earlier, NU vice chan-

cellor, Prof. Pardeshi Lal, delivered welcome address. Short speeches were also given by Nagaland University Teacher’s Association (NUTA), Nagaland University Non-Teaching Association and Post Graduate Students Union [PGSU (L)]. (Cont’d on p-8)

office of the chief minister in 2014, appeared to have been “suffering from an endless bout of delirium replete with hallucination with a large dose of fantasy added regularly.” Further, alleging that Rio also seemed to have “amnesia”, the NPF central media & press bureau said if he could remember his experience of 2015, Noke Wangnao would have been the president of the NPF if majority of legislators of the party were competent enough to appoint the president of the political party they belong to; and Kaito Aye would have been the chief minister with Kuzholuzo Nienu as the chief whip of the NPF if majority of the legislators had the authority to elect the whip of the political party they belong to. The M&PB further went on to remind Rio that the NPF Central party was

a responsible political party duly registered with the Election Commission of India (ECI) and functions according to laid down Constitutional norms, and not at one’s whims and fancies. It stated that the office bearers of the party, including the president, were appointed according to the provisions of the constitution of the party. As far as the party and Election Commission of India were concerned, M&PB said the NPF president was Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu and “not a charlatan unable to decide whether he is of the Democratic Progress Party or would like to cling on to the political party from which he has been suspended.” NPF central also stated that the “unconstitutional government” headed by TR Zeliang was on borrowed time and surviving

through the “mercy and largesse” of the BJP government at the Centre. However, NPF said that the Courts of Law would not be so generous because of the “flagrant violations of rules and procedures” the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Speaker and Nagaland Governor resorted to in their hurry to install the TR Zeliang government. NPF central alleged that the “unholy duo” of TR Zeliang and Rio, having failed to convince the legislators supporting them to merge with the BJP, may not find it “very comfortable to convince the BJP High Command that everything is honky dory.” It stated that the “bigger charade” they had to pull off – convincing the Courts that “they can fool everyone all the time” – lay ahead of them in the weeks to come. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah pays last tributes to journalist Gauri Lankesh. er of Police, West, M.N. Anucheth had told IANS that three special teams had been set up to crack the case. “They are on the lookout for the suspected assailants. We are tracking the movement of people and vehicles at check posts and inter-state borders.” “We have alerted our counterparts in the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu as well,” he said. Tributes poured in for the popular editor of Kannada tabloid “Gauri Lankesh Patrike” from across the country. People had

gathered at the Town Hall in Bengaluru for a silent protest, holding placards. “You can kill a person but not their ideas,” read one placard. A silent demonstration was also staged by journalist groups at the Victoria Hospital grounds, where the autopsy was being conducted. Journalists gathered at the Press Club in Bengaluru were seen holding placards that said “I am Gauri”, implying that the attack could have been possible on anyone of them. Across the state, protests were witnessed in Mangaluru, Kalaburagi, Dharwad and Koppal, among other regions, where citizens took to the streets. Jour nalists in Mysuru, wearing black ribbons around their shoulders, also held a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. Kannada film actors, writers, activists, state leaders, general public, friends and family of Lankesh’s were seen at Ravindra Kalakshetra in the city, paying their homage to the popular Kannada journalist. The killing also gave way to political parties in the country blaming one another for it.

SC allows 13-year-old rape survivor to abort N e w D e l h i , S EP 6 (AGENCIES): “How can a 13-year-old become a mother?” The question from Chief Justice Dipak Misra laid bare the vulnerability of a 13-year-old rape survivor, who was allowed by the Supreme Court to abort her 31-week-old foetus. A medical board opinion said medical termination of her pregnancy was possible at this stage, but would have serious consequences on the Class VII student from Mumbai. Medical experts, whose opinion was sought by the Supreme Court, said if the pregnancy was allowed to continue, the baby would be pre-term and require intensive neo-natal care. Either way, the doctors told the Supreme Court, both the ‘mother’ and the baby would be at grave risk. A Bench of three judges led by Chief Justice Misra, accompanied by Justices Amitava Roy and A.M. Khanwilkar, decided to favour the girl’s plea for an abortion. “ Considering the age of the petitioner (rape survivor), the trauma she has suffered because of sexual abuse, the agony she is going through and the opinion of the medical board favouring termination of pregnancy,

the termination of pregnancy should be allowed,” the Supreme Court ordered. The court said the medical procedure should be preferably conducted on September 8 at JJ Hospital in Mumbai. In the hearing, the rape survivor’s counsel, advocate Sneha Mukherjee, submitted that the pregnancy itself was detected when it was 27-weeks-old. “The child now knows she is pregnant. The knowledge has affected her critically,” Mukherjee submitted. Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar pointed out that usually delivery happens in the 36th or 37th week. “Already 31 weeks has passed,” Kumar submitted. Mukherjee said an FIR has been registered for rape and under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act of 2012. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act does not allow abortion if the pregnancy has crossed 20 weeks. The court had recently denied permission to a 10year-old rape survivor from Chandigarh to abort her foetus. Shortly after the court’s denial, the girl gave birth. The apex court awarded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the girl.

Odisha issues advisory to check spread of Blue Whale Bhubaneswar, Sep 6 (IANS): The Odisha Police on Wednesday issued guidelines for police, parents and teachers to deal with the macabre online game Blue Whale Challenge, which has claimed several lives across the country. The advisory tells parents to observe any changes in the eating or sleeping habits of children, a sudden drop in social interaction, too much time spent on the phone or talk about running away from home, and to immediately report if they see any such signs. Parents have been advised to consult a psychiatrist rather than a physician if they observe any cut marks on the arms or thighs of their children. Similarly, teachers have been instructed to keep an eye on falling grades and declining social behaviour in the pupils. Odisha Director General of Police R.P. Sharma, who took a review meeting on the game at police headquarters in Cuttack, issued the guidelines, which also talk about how to divert the attention of teenagers from the online game. He asked his staff to disseminate guidelines to parents, teachers and peer groups on detecting youngsters in the grip of the deadly game.

Freedom in peril

W

ell known commentator and journalist of Karnataka, Gauri Lankesh(55) fell victim to the bullets of murderers as she got down to open the gate of her home after coming back from work on August 5,2017. The cold blooded killing of a brave but defenceless woman found resonance throughout India when protests were held in several parts of the country to condemn the brutal killing. According to media reports, Gauri Lankesh, 55, had worked in New Delhi for leading English language newspapers and was more recently editing her own Kannada-language weekly, which was critical of the ruling Bharatiya Janata party and rightwing Hindu nationalist ideology. Lankesh was critical of the RSS and had to suffer when she was convicted last year in a defamation case filed by MP Pralhad Joshi who had objected to a report against BJP leaders. In November 2016, she was sentenced to six months in jail after a defamation case was filed against her for a report against Bharatiya Janata Party leaders. To put it mildly, Lankesh fell prey to the ire of those elements whose activities and ideology she boldly criticised. After the cold blooded killing, Siddharth Bhatia, co-founder and editor of the digital media business The Wire, tweeted: “The message and not to independent journalists but to all dissenters is clear. We are watching you and one day we will get you.” The case is reminiscent of murder cases of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare. Dabholkar was shot on August 20, 2013, in Pune, while Pansare was shot on February 16 in Kolhapur and died on February 20, 2015. Fingers have been raised on radical Hindu outfits. The fate of Lankesh again reiterates the present situation in India where intolerance to criticisms or difference of opinion or ideologies can mean anything adverse. Those who decided to kill Lankesh didn’t care about her right to freedom of speech and expression but that she became their enemy fit to be put down. The killing of Lankesh was not only an attack on freedom of speech but also an attack on the right of all Indians to express themselves and live without fear. The incident also highlights the rise of Talibanism in India and despite all the belated expressions of rage by those in the government, those self-appointed judge and executioners haven’t let off their grip on clubs and ropes. Killings in India under the pretext of cow protection or discouraging inter-marriage between communities has taken a viral form because ministers and MPs of the ruling party in Delhi make inflammatory speeches that hurt the sentiments of other minorities. It is not enough for the prime minister to speak belatedly but to take action against his own party men who defend such acts Despite the constitutional right to free speech, Reporters without Borders in April ranked India 136 out of 180 countries in its press freedom index report, down three places from 2016. The report cited pressure on the media from “Hindu nationalists trying to purge all manifestations of ‘anti-national thought’ from the national debate”. It said journalists were engaging in “self-censorship” and were increasingly the targets of “online smear campaigns by the most radical nationalists who vilify them and even threaten physical reprisals”.

DailyDevotion The Far-Reaching Rivers of Life He who believes in Me…out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. —John 7:38 A river reaches places which its source never knows. And Jesus said that, if we have received His fullness, “rivers of living water” will flow out of us, reaching in blessing even “to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8) regardless of how small the visible effects of our lives may appear to be. We have nothing to do with the outflow— “This is the work of God, that you believe…” (John 6:29). God rarely allows a person to see how great a blessing he is to others. A river is victoriously persistent, overcoming all barriers. For a while it goes steadily on its course, but then comes to an obstacle. And for a while it is blocked, yet it soon makes a pathway around the obstacle. Or a river will drop out of sight for miles, only later to emerge again even broader and greater than ever. Do you see God using the lives of others, but an obstacle has come into your life and you do not seem to be of any use to God? Then keep paying attention to the Source, and God will either take you around the obstacle or remove it. The river of the Spirit of God overcomes all obstacles. Never focus your eyes on the obstacle or the difficulty. The obstacle will be a matter of total indifference to the river that will flow steadily through you if you will simply remember to stay focused on the Source. Never allow anything to come between you and Jesus Christ— not emotion nor experience— nothing must keep you from the one great sovereign Source. Think of the healing and far-reaching rivers developing and nourishing themselves in our souls! God has been opening up wonderful truths to our minds, and every point He has opened up is another indication of the wider power of the river that He will flow through us. If you believe in Jesus, you will find that God has developed and nourished in you mighty, rushing rivers of blessing for others.

aba Gurmeet Ram Rahim was a Bhindranwale in making. He, too, saw to it that nobody dared him. But he turned out to be a paper tiger. When CBI court judge Jagdeep Singh pronounced his verdict, the Baba wept open in the court and implored him not to give severe punishment. His followers, too, were reportedly surprised over the manner in which the Baba capsized. But there is no doubting about the Baba’s vast following. It did not bother that he was being punished for raping two sadhvis, who were his followers at the Dera. It shows how ignorant and gullible can the followers be as they always looked towards him for leadership and guidance blindly? Bhindranwale, too, had become so powerful because of the vast following that the government turned a blind eye towards whatever he did. Now that the verdict is out with the quantum of punishment pronounced on rape cases, there is a likelihood of more skeletons tumbling out of the Dera

cupboards. The CBI court is already hearing murder charges against the Baba and it will be sooner than later that the court will give its verdict on them, too. There are other cases of castration of male followers in the Dera which are being pursued. All these clearly indicate the mindset of the Baba and the connivance of the authorities. There are some similarities between Bhindrawale and Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim. If the former was the creation of the Congress Party, the latter has had the support of a plethora of parties in the state of Haryana, including the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). The Baba may not be a militant like Bhindranwale but his motivation was very clear as he used political benevolence to further his own interests. Otherwise, he could not have amassed huge wealth and built 132 many deras around the world, including in the UK and the US. The Akalis were gaining upper hand and slowly eroding the base of the Congress in Punjab after the Akali-Janata Party

government came to power 2014 Lok Sabha elections in 1977. That was when and the Haryana assembly the Congress under Sanjay elections in the same year. Gandhi and Zail Singh He also supported the safselected and supported fron party in Punjab against Bhindranwale to take on Captain Amarinder Singh’s the Akalis. He became so Congress but that was not powerful that by the time good enough to make it Indira win. There Gandhi are r umours Kuldip Nayar realised that the entire that a Frankenstein had Manohar Lal Khatter’s been created and it was cabinet, minus the chief time for him to go, nothing minister, visited Baba’s less than the Indian Army Dera Sachcha Souda in would do to flush him out Sirsa after the swearing-in of Akal Takht inside the ceremony to pay obeisance Golden Temple complex to him. But it is not as if in Amritsar. Before us- the other parties are not ing the tanks the Army complicit. In 2009, the sought the permission of Dera chief extended his Mrs Gandhi and woke support to the Congress her up at midnight. Mrs which was his return gift Gandhi ended up com- for the Z plus security cover mitting a costly mistake by the UPA provided to him sending in the Army into in 2007. It was palpable the sanctum sanctorum in how the Baba had become June 1984. Bhindranwale powerful that the state was killed but the anger went weak in the knees over Operation Bluestar when challenged by his cost Mrs Gandhi her life private army. That the state four months later. Similarly, of Haryana deliberately Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim bungled in imposing Secwas encouraged by the tion 144 before the verdict, leaders of the BJP because sending a cold invitation to it suited the party’s vote murderers, asking them to bank politics. The Baba en- take over. Apparently, there dorsed the BJP in both the were intelligence reports

before the verdict and both the states of Punjab and Haryana, including the Chandigarh Administration, were warned of the trouble brewing as the Dera followers were gathering in Panchkula and preparing themselves for the show of strength if the verdict went against the Baba. Punjab, however, did safeguard its interests taking all necessary measures while Haryana, despite assuring that they were well prepared to meet any situation, failed to stop the followers from public destroying property and killing people. Only after the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order did the Haryana government wake up and make preparations to stall any further damage. When history repeats itself, it is basically mocking at our system of not learning any lessons. Who will account for the loss of 30 lives and damage to public property? But the BJP leadership has not done anything to touch chief minister Khattar because of the backing he has from the RSS. But then the problem

in India is how to curb the god men and the stop the government from supporting them? Maybe, they provide the vote bank but they do an irreparable damage to the polity. Democracy demands a direct contact between the voter and the party. The Babas come in the way and try to become a parallel authority. When the ballot box is stalled by another force, democracy gets weakened. Therefore the god men have no place in a system which runs with the consent of the people. They are only like mahants in temples. They more they are allowed to have say, the less would be free expressions. Religion is a private affair. There are no problems with the Asarams, Nithyanandas and Ram Rahims as long as they pursue and preach spiritual thoughts. The problem arises when they indulge in fraudulent and illegal activity, going to the extent of committing rapes and murders. What gives the whole thing an ugly shape is the support of the political parties for their own gains.

Post-mortem

T

We shall overcome

o keep the Indo-Naga peace talks going has been an extremely difficult management: to steer and respond with comprehensiveness under rapid changes of gravity which are not always in favor of non negotiable Naga issues. The forward move has progressed and will be so till the finish. GoI has honestly declared that it understands the “situations of the Naga people”. The ‘unique standing’ of the political case between the Naga people and the Government of India must be truthfully addressed; it was and is never an arm-chair assessment or dictates that can sustain the two separate entities to a negotiating table to build up sincere conversations towards finding an end to this most protracted issue of disagreement. Having crossed major obstacles, critically running barriers, successive Indian leadership on its own commitment, has never left any stone unturned to explore means to actively address ‘the reality’: the Nagas’ natural rights to self determine their political Institution based on their origin, identity, history, their tradition, religion and their intrinsic attachment to Mother Nature they so dearly hold as their eternal, unalienable Mother Land. Judged by the level of dedication in pursuit of honorable settlement, there is no reason for the Naga people to be doubtful. Any possible hurdle that has the potential to bring about unrest will be well balanced, and all trending events to ensure shared accountability, including regional security concerns diligently balanced, the Framework Agreement in place now will conclusively guarantee enduring solution. This Landmark achievement gives the Nagas the reason to be confident and not unconvinced, to be swayed by highly surcharged emotions and misgivings from different quarters today. Any attempt to upset the balancing between the two entities will never achieve result. The two parties while addressing political competencies and the dynamism, sincerely appreciate what difficulties the talks had to associate with while keeping pace with changing circumstances in matters of responsibilities the Nagas and Government of India are inseparably involved with and shared, the peace process has been coherent despite hiccups and extremely testing days time and again. The anticipation, apprehension or calculation for civil war is seriously viewed by the Naga populace and the GoI as well. The Nagas, while poised on ground of being free People, have been consistent in their combined search for justice and peace and, at the same time, severely disturbed by forces within from day one the Peace Process first kick-started, need be watchful over any attempt to spoil what has dearly been achieved and any threat therefore, must be registered and seriously viewed. Both the Leaders engaged in the outstandingly stretched dialogue always do careful scrutiny over obstacles of sectarian interests and look forward to delivering what is most essential to make the conclusion honorable and complete. Human shortfalls, incompleteness and nature

of being vulnerable will be part of natural process everywhere there is conflict interest; but constantly fanning highly communal flame need to be significantly viewed; because any effort to jeopardize peace initiatives always besets the inevitable consequences, linking terrible inflictions on innocent population. That is the collective concern of every sensible Naga citizen as well; it is of utmost obligation to respond with every natural human reflex being more rational, moral and intelligent to such danger. It is of significance and conscious to Naga psychology since fear had dominated them for so long. What the Nagas need the most today and for the rest of their life is a people-based Political Government. The two parties are ambitious and driven to bring home an honorable solution since the course is on its final phase. The journey of the Naga people towards their rightful place has never been free from sabotage, betrayal and violence. Under extreme situations, the Nagas have been constantly pushed into enclosed and away from the notice of the outside world where they had to take all the severest of punishments alone without deserving though. The Nagas had gone down to the crucible and had come out by the strength of the Provident Hand over them. No amount of military actions, no assailment of treason had the Nagas ever been deterred. We have stood our position because we look beyond the joy and luxury of compromise and sell out. We have dared and faced furies of both unforgiving environ and treacherous men in our front and behind. We have cried tears and willingly borne the pain of separation from loved ones. We have covered a great distance to reach where we are today. We are no longer hidden. The whole world looks at us now, to see that the current peace initiatives supported by all over are through to the most anticipated conclusion, that is, the final announcement that the Nagas are no longer fettered with a monumental Road Map in place between the Government of India and the Naga people. We have crossed high seas and mountains to announce the multitude wherever we go that the Nagas had committed no crime to deserve eternal discrimination and suppression. Today Nagas are connected. They are no longer isolated or forsaken. We do intensely believe in ‘the Naga people’. Clinging to the principle, we fought the enemies and their coalition forces for decades. We stayed the course when many wavered and ran away from the battle field to join forces with the enemies. We have never failed to the call of duty at any period of time. The NSCN have carried the Nagas through thick and thin. We have never failed to establish our bottom-line upon the strength of being Nagas. We have zealously guarded what is dearest and always the first for the Nagas. It is this criticality that has prolonged the course of negotiations. As the break of a new day is unstoppable, the dawn of the process to resolve has arrived too. Issued by MIP, GPRN

The Wolves are coming!

et me share this little narrative of what happened inside the Yellowstone Park. In the year of 1995 fourteen wolves were reintroduced inside the Yellowstone National Park but no one expected that the wolves would bring a miracle. It all began by the wolves hunting the deers which led to the population of deers rapidly decrease. The wolves presence also made the deer avoid the areas where they were an easy prey. But then the deers absence made the plants grow again in those areas. Beautiful aspen and willow trees began to flourish. That’s when things really began to happen. Along with the trees and bushes came more berries and bugs too. Thanks to the various species of birds which came back to the park. But with the increase in the population of trees, it also started attracting different species of beaver which was earlier extinct in the park. Their dams then attracted otters, musk rats and various reptiles. The wolves also killed coyotes as a result the mice and the rabbit population grew. This attracted red foxes, weasels and badgers and hawks to the parks. Even the population of the bald eagle arose. But here the most interesting part is the wolves changed the direction of the rivers too. With the better balance between the predator and the prey came the possibility of other species to survive also. The increased vegetation growth made the erosion decrease and the river banks were stabilized.

Channels narrowed and more pools were formed. And then the rivers remain more fixed on their course. So the wolves not only give the Yellowstone Park’s huge eco system a new balance but they also changed the park’s physical geography. This all happened at nature’s lap. Do we learn something from here? Let’s have a look at what we can learn from the little lesson above. Wolves are often considered as wild beasts and deadly predators. They are known as ferocious and untamed animals lurking around the wilds always looking for some prey to pounce upon. Deers are considered as meek, innocent and harmless creatures. But we have to remember that deers inspite of all these docile qualities, we know they have a playful nature, are pleasure loving and can be also kept in captivity very easily. Their habit of being lost in themselves while grazing is their most common trait, which makes them an easy prey for the predators prowling nearby. Colorado Aspen trees do not grow alone. They are found in clusters or groves. The reason is that the aspen sends up new shoots from the roots. In a small grove, all of the trees may actually be connected by their roots. Giant California redwood trees may tower 300 feet into the sky. It would seem that they would require extremely deep roots to anchor them against strong winds. But we are told that their roots are

actually quiet shallow so as to capture as much surface water as possible. And they spread in all directions, intertwining with other redwoods. Locked together in this way, all trees support each other in the wind and storms. They need one another to survive. In this again we learn another strong lesson from this on how we all need one another inspite of our shortcomings and fallacies. The aspen and the willows represent our moral fabric and the ethical structures which surround a conscientious society. Bushes and berries represents the easy comforts and luxuries that are found around in plenty which are often swarmed by bugs that can be referred as little disruptions which happens in our careless indulgences when we leave our moral and comforts unguarded and thrown carelessly thus attracting the other wicked habits to hover in our midst. The predatorious wild wolves killing the coyotes shows us that our more bigger vices and forces overtakes our little vices and which as a result the bigger evil becomes more visible and apparent in all spheres of where it overtakes the little ones. The small vices no longer have any effect on us and are wiped out in our mundane dreary habits of our regular twisted and warped shady misdealing. Red foxes, weasels and badgers represent our cunningness, malevolence and misdemeanors etc. (To be concluded) Jonah Achumi

London, Sep 6 (Agencies): North Korea’s recent nuclear test appears to have triggered several landslides, according to what are believed to be the first satellite images of the aftermath. Sunday’s test took place underground at the mountainous Punggye-ri site. Analysis group 38 North published pictures which show “more numerous and widespread” disturbances than before. The test unleashed a powerful 6.3-magnitude tremor which was felt across the border in China. North Korea has conducted six nuclear tests so far, all at Punggye-ri, which consists of a system of tunnels dug beneath a mountainous region. 38 North said its latest pictures, which were taken a day after the latest test, showed landslides as well as numerous areas of gravel and scree fields which were “lofted” from the tremors. Lofting occurs when shockwaves force material to be lifted up from the ground, and the material falls back down in the same place.

ince of Idlib, it said. Other sources have given a death toll of at least 87. Syria’s government has denied involvement and claims it no longer possesses chemical weapons after a 2013 agreement under which it pledged to surrender its chemical arsenal. A fact-finding mission by the UN’s chemical watchdog, the OPCW, concluded earlier this year that sarin gas was used in the attack, but did not assign blame. A joint UN-OPCW panel is currently working to determine whether Syrian government forces were behind the attack. But today’s report is the first from the UN to officially lay blame for the attack on Damascus. The report also found that the Syrian government was responsible for at least 23 other chemical attacks in the war-ravaged country since March 2013.

Geneva, Sep 6 (AFP): United Nations war crimes investigators said Wednesday they had evidence that Syrian government forces were behind the chemical attack that killed dozens of people in Khan Sheikhun in April. In the first UN report to officially blame Damascus, the UN Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Syria said it had gathered an “extensive body of information” showing the Syrian airforce was behind the horrific sarin gas attack on April 4. “All evidence available leads the Commission to conclude that there are reasonable grounds to believe Syrian forces dropped an aerial bomb dispersing sarin in Khan Sheikhun,” the report said. At least 83 people, a third of them children, were killed and nearly 300 wounded in the attack on Khan Sheikhun, a town in the opposition-held northern prov-

There was one tweeted by Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek dating back to the Rwandan genocide in 1994. The BBC also said: “The fake news is generated because the government is not allowing media access to the troubled areas.” The latest conflict was sparked on August 25, when Rohingya militants attacked police posts, triggering a military counter-offensive to protect the civilians. However, the Rohingya families streaming north into Bangladesh have been reporting that security forces, sometimes backed by armed Buddhist civilians, burned their villages and opened fire on the inhabitants. Suu Kyi was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for her work in bringing democracy to Myanmar, but some have called for her Prize to be taken back.

Yangon, Sep 6 (IANS): Myanmar’s de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi has claimed that the crisis in Rakhine state is being distorted by a “huge iceberg of misinformation”, media reports said on Wednesday. In her first comments on the latest Rohingya crisis, she said tensions were being fanned by fake news promoting the interests of terrorists, the BBC reported. Suu Kyi made the comments in a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Efe news quoted her office as saying. More than 123,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh in two weeks. The statement carried by the state media, said Suu Kyi told Erdogan that her government had “already started defending all the people in Rakhine in the best way possible”. Suu Kyi is quoted as saying: “We know very well, more than most, what it means to be deprived of human rights and democratic protection. “So we make sure that all the people in our country

PRESS NOTE

In continuation of our earlier notification in respect of land sale restriction and undesired revocation of certain defaulters’ sale deeds within Sirhima/Sirhi area (the erstwhile Mengupheju), it is, once again, informed to all concerned to seriously note that any land sale or purchase made/to be made within the said area, without the consent of the founding fathers, will be strictly restricted and anybody doing it, at their own risk. This notice is issued in order to avoid misunderstanding and regret amongst the original landowners, the settled villagers and any concerned third party. It is felt pertinent to inform all concerned, once again, that Sirhima/ Mengupheju village was founded, in the ancient time, by Hieme (Thevo) and Netseyi (Thepa) of Mezoma; and that the two villages namely Sirhima (Kuki) and Sirhi Angami were permitted (and not founded) in traditional goodwill terms to establish village and utilise the land, but not for sale. Rami Malek: First look him as Freddie Mercury C in Queen biopic

Cher shoots down Twitter troll over Trump’s decision to end DACA

A

fter years of delays, production has finally started on a biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Actors including Johnny Depp, Ben Whishaw and Sacha Baron Cohen had been linked to the role, only to drop out. Producers finally cast Mr Robot star Rami Malek as the Bohemian Rhapsody singer, and the first photo of him in character was released on Tuesday. Wearing Mercury’s Live Aid outfit, Malek looks uncannily like the flamboyant star. “When you’re able to open your eyes and see a different person staring back at you in the mirror, it’s a very affirming moment,” Malek told Entertainment Weekly. The biopic will chronicle the story of Queen from 1970, when Mercury teamed up with Brian May and Roger Taylor, until the band’s performance at Live Aid in 1985, six years before the singer died of complications from Aids. X-Men director Bryan Singer is in charge of the film. He described it as “not

a traditional biopic”, but instead a celebration of the band’s music. The movie recently cast Ben Hardy, Joe Mazzello and Gwilym Lee as Queen’s other members, and guitarist Brian May posted a photo of the full line-up to his Instagram account on Wednesday morning. Last week, the star also posted a photo of the Live Aid stage - which has been recreated for the movie. The film, which has yet to receive an official title, is due to hit cinemas at Christmas 2018.

her has taken a Twitter user to task after her intention to take in young migrants – also known as ‘Dreamers’ – was questioned. The singer took to social media yesterday (September 5) to voice her opposition to President Donald Trump‘s controversial decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, which was introduced by his predecessor Barack Obama. Up to 800,000 beneficiaries of the scheme – mostly Latin Americans – could be affected by Trump’s decision, with the programme having allowed those ‘Dreamers’ to apply for work and study permits. While existing recipients of the scheme will not be affected for at least six months, no new applications to DACA can now be made. Cher told her 3.42 million followers of her intention to take ‘Dreamers’ into her home and offer “sanctuary” and protection, before urging others who could to do the same.

I underwent Total Hip Replacement (THR) surgery on 26th July, 2017 at our Imkongliba Memorial District Hospital, Mokokchung by four members team of Doctors led by the reputed Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Martsüden and 2 Technicians and a number of nurses taking almost three and half hours. As a longing patient the total success of surgery is unbelievable relief both physically and psychologically. The sincere attention given even pre and post operation by the team is appreciable. It is our experiences that for orthopaedic case treatment in particular, instead of going outside, spending huge sum of money and energy we better do here at our doorstep which is more convenient with less expense. With heartfelt thanksgiving, I and my family profoundly acknowledge the goodwill of the Medical Superintendent and his Staffs, and the expertise and efficient efforts of Dr. Martsüden and his team in particular. India thrash SL by 7 wkts in T20I

(L-R): Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews being stumped by India’s wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Virat Kohli celebrates his half centuryon Wednesday. (PTI) C o l o m b o, S e p 6 (IANS): Virat Kohli led from the front with some explosive batting as India thrashed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the one-off Twenty20 International at the R. Premadasa Stadium here on Wednesday. Kohli plundered 82 runs off just 54 deliveries, smashing seven boundaries and a six as the visitors chased down the 171-run target with four balls and seven wickets to spare. Manish Pandey gave Kohli excellent support from the other end. The right-hander from Karnataka brought up his maiden half-century in T20Is and remained unbeaten on 51 with four boundaries and a six studding his 36-ball innings. The duo put together 119 runs between them off 77 deliveries after the early departure of Indian openers

Rohit Sharma and Lokesh Rahul. By the time Kohli fell to young pacer Isuru Udana -- caught by Dasun Shanaka while trying to clear the midwicket fence -- the Indians were on the threshold of victory, with 10 runs needed off nine balls. For Sri Lanka, veteran fast bowler Lasith Malinga, Seekkuge Prasanna and Isuru Udana took a wicket each. Rohit and Rahul had put the visitors off to a promising start. But Rohit virtually threw away his wicket with a poorly attempted slog off Malinga, which saw Thisara Perera running in from mid-on to latch onto the skier. Rahul departed exactly three overs later thanks to a brilliant diving catch by Dasun Shanaka at cover off Seekkuge Prasanna’s bowling.

But that was the last bit of celebration that the Lankans will manage for a long time as Kohli and Pandey came together to ensure a comfortable victory for India. Pandey hit the winning runs in style, hitting Thisara Perera for a boundary to the mid-off fence which also brought up his half-century. Earlier, Sri Lanka rode on Dilshan Munaweera’s 29-ball brisk half century to post 170/7. Put in to bat after a rain-delayed start, the hosts lost the opening duo of skipper Upul Tharanga (5) and Niroshan Dickwella (17) within the first five overs to totter at 46/2. India’s T20 specialists -- Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah -- gave the visitors a perfect start to remove the opening duo. Bhuvneshwar got rid of Tharanga with a perfect in-

swinger as the ball crashed into his middle stumps before Bumrah, who was bludgeoned for three boundaries in his first over, came back to castle Dickwella in the fifth over of the innings. Coming in at No.3, Munaweera (53 from 29 balls, 5*4, 4*6) saved the hosts from the blushes with a fighting half century that came off 26 balls before all-rounder Ashan Priyanjan’s unbeaten run-a-ball 40 helped them to a healthy total.

Brief Scores: India: 174/3 (Virat Kohli 82, Manish Pandey 51 not out) vs Sri Lanka: 170/7 (Dilshan Munaweera 53, Ashan Priyanjan 40 not out, Isuru Udana 19 not out, Yuzvendra Chahal 3/43, Kuldeep Yadav 2/20).

India-Aus series to be played as per old ICC rules New Delhi, Sep 6 (PTI): The upcoming India-Australia series, scheduled from September 17 to October 13, will be played as per existing by-laws of the game despite new ICC rules coming into effect from September 28. Virat Kohli and his team will play as per new rules when New Zealand tour India in mid-October. However, the rules will take effect when Bangladesh take on South Africa and Pakistan take on Sri Lanka. The new set of rules pertaining to the code of conduct, DRS usage, and size of the equipment were supposed to be implemented from October 1 but with the twin Test series starting on September 28, it has been decided that it will come to effect from that very date.

Kohima, Sep 6 (NPN): Khriekesa FC beat Addax FC 3-0 to enter the final of the KTC Cup played at Kohima local ground on Wednesday. Khriekesa FC, which finished third position in the recently concluded Kohima Football League, opened the account in the 11th min-

ute when Nyithong Magh free kick found the target. The first session ended 1-0 in favour of Khriekesa FC. Coming after the break, Khriekesa FC scored two more goals. Indian colts must use U17 WC to shine: FIFA legends

Mumbai, Sep 6 (PTI): FIFA legends Carlos Valderrama and Marcel Desailly Wednesday advised the Indian colts to view the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup as a huge opportunity to shine on the international stage and perform to their potential. “It’s a huge opportunity for the Indian U-17 team. If you want to go to Real Madrid, then this is your opportunity. All the big scouts and agents will be watching, so enjoy and grab this opportunity. You don’t get too many oppor-

tunities in football. This is their moment to shine and stand out,” said Valderrama, who used to be a stand-out performer with his sublime ball skills and hair style for Colombia in the 1980s. “The Indian team playing at home is something very special. They should be prepared physically and psychologically very well because it is tough to handle pressure playing on home soil,” said French World Cup winner Desailly. “We won the World Cup in 1998 on home soil because we were able to

convert that pressure into positive energy on the field and have that extra performance,” he remarked while talking to reporters at the D Y Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Nigerian great Emmanuel Amuneke echoed similar views. “ U n f o r t u n a t e ly, I haven’t seen them play, being the first time they are hosting this event. It is a big encouragement, opportunity for youths to develop their game,” Amuneke said. “The U-17 boys need to believe in themselves. Their

journey starts here and if they can prove themselves and believe in their ability as a team, play collectively and see how they can make it to the group stage, the opportunity would be great for them,” the ex-coach of Nigerian U17 team added. The team of five FIFA legends comprising Amuneke, Valderrama, Desailly, Spaniard Fernando Morientes and Mexican Jorge Campos, trounced an Indian select 5-4 in an exhibition match held to start the 30day countdown for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Delhi beat Venus oldest semi-finalist in US Open Bengaluru in PKL N e w Yo r k , S e p 6 (IANS): Seven-time tennis Grand Slam champion Venus Williams became the oldest semifinalist in US Open history at age 37 with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2) thriller win over Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic. Coming up next for the US ninth seed will be the clash against her 83rdranked compatriot Sloane Stephens, who edged past Latvian 16th seed Anastasija Sevastova 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4), reports Xinhua news agency. Williams, who improved to 2-4 all-time against the Czech 13th seed, will return to the world top five for the first time since January 2011. All six of the matches between Williams and Kvitova have gone to a third set. “I’m so fortunate to have won that match. It came down to the wire,” Williams said after the quarter-final match on Tuesday. “I try to tell myself to enjoy

Venus Williams the competition, enjoy the battle and I think I was able to do that.” Williams gave up the first break of serve trailing at 3-1 with three double faults, but was able to reel off five straight games as Kvitova racked up too many errors. A l o o s e Wi l l i a m s game early in the second offered Kvitova the lifeline she needed and she clawed back to take the second set. Two brilliant cross-court backhands gave Kvitova an

early break in the third but Williams recovered from 3-1 down, leveling it when the Czech double-faulted. It came down to a tiebreak and a brilliant return at 1-1 was enough to give Williams the momentum. Roared on by the New York crowd, the 2000 and 2001 champion powered to 6-1 and never looked back. Stephens’ comeback from injury will keep going all the way to the semifinals. She’s No.83 now with 13 wins in her last 15 matches, becoming just the seventh player outside the top 50 to reach the US Open women’s semifinals. Her only previous Grand Slam semi was at the Australian Open four years ago. In men’s side, Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta, who has not dropped a set, cruised into his first Grand Slam semifinal by defeating Argentine 29th seed Diego Schartzman 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.

Kolkata, Sep 6 (IANS): Dabang Delhi came from behind to beat Bengaluru Bulls 38-30 and log their second consecutive win in a Inter Zone challenge of the Pro-Kabaddi League at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium on Wednesday. In what was a see-saw battle from start to finish, Bengaluru threw away their halftime lead of 18-12 as Delhi rode their captain Meraj Sheykh’s superlative show to register their fourth win in the tournament in nine games. Delhi are now on 24 points. Bengaluru remained fourth with 23 points from 11 outings. For Bengaluru, Rohit Kumar (13 raid points) fought well but in the end his efforts went in vain. Delhi got off to a bright start, opening up a 6-1 lead, on the raids of their Iranian duo of skipper Sheykh (14 raid points) and Abolfazl Maghsodlou’s (8 raid points).

Argentina, Chile slip up; Uruguay win

Surrounded by Venezuela’s players Argentina’s Lionel Messi controls the ball during a 2018 World Cup qualifying soccer match, Tuesday. (AP/PTI) Montevideo, Sep 6 (Agencies): Argentina and Chile’s World Cup qualification hopes were left on a knife edge after the South American heavyweights slipped up once again on the road to next year’s finals in Russia. Argentina needed a second-half own goal to help them snatch a 1-1 draw against already-eliminated Venezuela in Buenos Aires

while Chile crashed to a 1-0 defeat against Bolivia in La Paz. The results left 2014 World Cup finalists Argentina and reigning Copa America champions Chile outside of the automatic qualifying places and sets up a nail-biting final two rounds of matches next month. Argentina are fifth in the standings with 24 points from 16 games while Chile are sixth with 23 points. The

Argentinians -- who would face a playoff against New Zealand if they remain fifth -- host fourth-placed Peru next month in Buenos Aires before an awkward final game at altitude against Ecuador. Chile meanwhile will face Ecuador in Santiago on October 5, before heading to Brazil for their final qualifier five days later. At the top of the table, Brazil have already qualified and assured them-

selves of first place. The Brazilians picked up another point on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw against third- placed Colombia in Barranquilla. A spectacular volleyed goal from Willian gave the Brazilians the lead on the stroke of half-time before Colombia clawed back a share of the points with a battling second-half display capped by a headed equaliser from Radamel Falcao. Uruguay meanwhile moved to the brink of qualification with a typically combative 2-1 win over Paraguay in Asuncion. Federico Valverde fired Uruguay into the lead with a deflected shot on 76 minutes before Luis Suarez then broke clear to set up the visitors second. The Barcelona superstar rounded goalkeeper Anthony Silva and then saw his shot hit the woodwork only to rebound into the net off Gustavo Gomez. Angel Romero pulled a goal back for Paraguay but hopes of a dramatic late fightback came to nothing. The result leaves Uruguay second in the standings with 27 points from 16 games.
