Never backed note ban, warned of damage: Rajan

NEW DELHI, SEP 5 (AGENCIES): Former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan has stated that he was never in favour of demonetisation and had warned the government of the damage that pulling out 86 per cent of cash would cause to the economy. Rajan said responses given to the parliamentary committee by RBI about demonetisation were not in accordance with his actual response. Speaking on the launch of his book, ‘I do what I do’, Rajan said it was not a tell-all book and did not quote private conversation except on demonetisation in the introduction. He said he had wanted to set the record straight on demonetisation as Parliament had a right to know what actually happened. “At no point during my term was the RBI asked to make a decision on demonetisation,” says Rajan, a statement that flies in the face of claims that the planning for the surprise move had started months before it was actually announced on

November 8, 2016. Rajan, who had predicted the 2008 global financial crisis, was governor of the central bank from September 4, 2013 to September 4, 2016. “I was asked by the government in February 2016 for my views on demonetisation, which I gave orally. Although there might be long-term benefits, I felt the likely short-term economic costs would outweigh them and there were potentially better alternatives to achieve the main goals. I made these views known in no (rpt) no uncertain terms,” he wrote. RBI, he said, handed over a note to the government outlining the potential cost and benefits of

demonetisation as well as alternatives to achieve similar aims. It also detailed the preparation that would be needed and the time it would require. “The RBI flagged what would happen if preparation was inadequate,” said Rajan, who had so far not commented on the move. Just over two months after his departure on September 4, 2016, the government invalidated Rs 15.44 lakh crore, expecting onethird may not come back, with an aim to check blackmoney and corruption. The RBI, which had shied away from declaring how much of junked currency was deposited in banks in the limited window provided, last week in its annual report said 99 per cent of the currency had returned. The monetary cost of printing new currency for the central bank has more than doubled to Rs 7,965 crore while the number of counterfeit notes or fake notes detected during the exercise is only minuscule -just about 7.6 lakh pieces.

Rohingya are illegal immigrants who need to be deported: Rijiju

Rohingya Muslim refugees hold placards and raise slogans against human rights violations in Myanmar during a protest at Jantar Mantar, in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Rajiv Pratap Rudy New Delhi, SEP 5 (AGENCIES): “Boss is always right” and “failed to communicate my good work to bosses” is how Rajiv Pratap Rudy reacted on Tuesday to a query on the possible reasons for his being dropped as the minister for skill development and entrepreneurship in the latest reshuffle. “I tried my best... Even my successor will need some time to deliver visible changes,” Rudy told NDTV. Rudy was replaced by petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who was not just elevated to Cabinet Minister rank but also giv-

en additional responsibility of the Skill Development Ministry. “When I was made minister in 2014, I had to look for officers, create a roadmap and structure... All that is there now across the country. There are centres imparting training to youths as per the Prime Minister’s vision,” he added. Rudy told NDTV: “I can’t take my certificate if the boss (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) thinks that I failed. The boss is always right.” “But yes, I failed to communicate to people and my bosses (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) the work done under their guidance in such a short time,” the MP from Saran in Bihar said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dropped six ministers from his council of ministers in the latest reshuffle on Sunday. “How can I create employment? My brief was to raise an employable workforce. Getting jobs to them was never there in the brief given to me,” he added.

Jodhpur police rescues Blue Whale player

JAIPUR, SEP 5 (AGENCIES): A 17-year-old-girl, with a blue whale carved into her arm, was rescued when she tried to kill herself by jumping into the Kaylana Lake on the outskirts of Jodhpur late on Monday night. The girl allegedly wanted to complete the final task of the lethal Blue Whale Challenge game by ending her life. The girl told the policemen and divers who saved her that her mother would die and her family would be in trouble if she did not complete the game. “The girl repeatedly asked the policemen to let her jump [into water] and requested them not to inform her family members,” Lekhraj Sihag, SHO of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar police station, said. The police were protecting the identity of the girl and her family. Though the police officers did not disclose the girl’s identity, she was stated to be the daughter of a Border Security Force (BSF) soldier and a resident of Mandore area in Jodhpur city. The teenage girl had left her home on Monday night on the pretext of going to market. When she did not return, her parents called her on her mobile phone, but it was picked up by a stranger. The panicked parents rushed to the police station with a missing complaint and a hunt was launched for her. The girl was spotted riding her scooter around the Kaylana lake, situated 8 km to the west of Jodhpur on Jaisalmer Road. Mr. Sihag said the police team rushed to the spot and called her to come back, but she ran to the cliff and jumped into the lake. A group of divers who were near the area rescued the girl from the lake. The police then handed her over to her family. She told the police that she had downloaded the Blue Whale game in her mobile phone a few days ago and was completing the tasks assigned to her till she reached the final stage. This was the latest in a series of instances being reported from across the country of deaths or suicide attempts linked to the Blue Whale Challenge game. The girl in Jodhpur had apparently completed the tasks of selfharm and was making one cut on her body per day, besides watching horror videos, before acting upon the final task of jumping off a height and taking her life.

New Delhi, Sep 5 (IANS): The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that though Parliament was conscious of its social obligations and would take a call to put an end to child marriages, the social evil was a reality and that society needs were “inescapable”. Senior counsel Rana Mukherjee told a bench of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta that different statutes that can have a bearing on marriage of children between the age of 15 and 18 have to be read cohesively. Justice Lokur expressed concern over child marriage despite law prohibiting it, and said, “It is not marriage, but mirage.” However, the bench disagreed with Mukherjee when he sought to dub the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, as “harsh”. “The Act is not a harsh law. It just provides for a (jail) punishment of 15 days,” the bench said. When the senior counsel said that the punishment prescribed was two years, the court said: “It is nothing. If it was death, we could have described it as a harsh law.”

No one can separate me from Ganga: Uma New Delhi, SEP 5 (AGENCIES): Apparently upset over being stripped of the Ganga Rejuvenation portfolio, Uma Bharti on Tuesday said no one can separate her from the river Ganga and announced that she will begin a padyatra along the banks of the holy river from Gangasagar next month. Bharti, from whom Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation portfolio was taken and handed over to Nitin Gadkari in Sunday’s Cabinet reshuffle, also wondered how Gadkari could get this portfolio if she had failed because she had worked in consultation with him. “No one can separate me from Ganga. Ganga is still with me... If I had failed how could Gadkari get this portfolio because I had worked in close coordination and close consultations with him (Gadkari) on Namami Gange project,” she told media persons at the Drinking water and Sanitation Ministry, whose charge she was given on Sunday. “I have successfully implemented most of the projects of my ministry and completed most of the proj-

ects,” she said. Bharti said she will begin a padyatra from Gangasagar in West Bengal from October but hastened to add that it was not an act of defiance. “I had announced a year ago that I will start a padyatra and had intimated Prime Minister Narendra

Modi and Amit Shah. Shah then told me to begin the yatra after the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Now, I will begin this padyatra to make the people aware about Ganga cleanliness. The government alone cannot clean Ganga. We need to involve people and make them aware of it,” she said.

Failed to communicate my good work, says Rudy

The issue is now being examined by the Supreme Court of India after two Rohingya immigrants petitioned the court, challenging the Centre’s stand on deportation. “I want to tell the international organisations whether the Rohingyas are registered under the United Nations Human Rights Commission or not. They are illegal immigrants in India,” Rijiju told reporters here.

The minister of state for home said that since they are not legal immigrants, “they stand to be deported”. “As per law, they stand to be deported because they are illegal immigrants. We are a nation with great democratic tradition. Rijiju said that he would not comment on the legal aspect of the case but maintained that “illegal immigrants have to be deported as per law.” “India has absorbed maximum number of immigrants and we don’t need any lessons from any organisation,”he said. The minister stressed that “India has great democratic tradition and the government of India is not going to throw them out into the sea or shoot them.” Last month, Rijiju, in response to a Parliament question, had claimed that 14,000 Rohingya were registered with the UNHCR, the UN organ that deals with refugees. But the minister addedd that “inputs received from different stated indicated the number to be over 40,000”.

Teachers are the best category of nation builders: President

Ram Nath Kovind New Delhi, Sep 5 (IANS): President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday said teachers are the “best category” of nation builders but noted there is a dip in the standard of education because teachers are running away from their responsibility. After meeting teachers who received awards on the occasion of Teachers Day, he said: “You are the best category of nation builders. India is a diverse nation... bringing all children to the mainstream is the responsibility of teachers.” He also said that it was “important that our children

should be taught to be good human beings first and imbibe the values of honesty and integrity” because it was “only then will they excel in the profession they choose”. Kovind however said that there is a dip in the standard of education because “teachers are running away from their responsibility”. He also called on teachers to try to understand the family and financial background of students so that they can bring all students to the same level. “Children in schools are from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Teachers need to take care of this. They should make an effort to understand the child’s family background and minimise disparity among the students of a class. “Without understanding the background of every student, uniformity cannot be brought,” he said in his speech in Hindi. Pointing out that many teachers gave extra tuition to those who paid for it, he said it was like “selling education”.

Govt deregisters more than 2 lakh firms in crackdown New Delhi, SEP 5 (AGENCIES): The government on Tuesday said that names of over 2.09 lakh firms have been struck off from register of companies for failing to comply with regulatory requirements and action has been initiated to restrict operations of their bank accounts. Continuing its crackdown on shell companies which are allegedly used as conduits for illicit fund flows and tax evasion, the government said the directors of deregistered firms would not be able to operate the bank accounts till these entities are legally restored. “The names of 2,09,032 companies have been struck off from the register of companies under Section 248 (5) of the Act. The existing directors and authorised signatories of such struckoff companies will now become ex-directors or exauthorised signatories,” an official release said.

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVII NO. 272 Dimapur, Wednesday, September 6, 2017

Ode to peace makers

T

here are certain events that had taken place in the affairs of Nagaland in its turbulent journey of the 50s to 60s when turmoil and killings were rife and when gloom and fear plagued the entire Naga Hills. There was no national media to report on the inhuman and untold atrocities perpetrated on Nagas by armed police and security forces in the 50s to the 60s. All villages in then Naga Hills and NHTA were not spared from reprisals by the security forces during the three decades where several thousands died under various circumstances. It was under such a cloud of fear and uncertainty during those turbulent decades that the Baptist Church, under grave threats to its leaders, managed to contact the undivided NNC to cease hostilities and opt for a negotiated solution. At the church’s request, the government of India agreed to utilize the services of Jaya Prakash Narayan (the first director of the Peace Mission) which also included Rev. Michael Scott of the Anglican Church and then chief minister of Assam, B.P. Chaliha. The relentless endeavor of the Peace Mission actively supported by the church leaders headed by Rev. Longri Ao and the liberal help and patronage of the State Government, had finally resulted in an agreement for Cessation of Fire signed by the then Governor Vishnu Sahay, on behalf of the Government of India and the Peace Mission while Zashei Huire, Biseto Medom and L. Benito had signed on behalf of the underground government. For most of the young generation in Nagaland, September 6, 1964 would hardly ring a bell since most were born only after the late seventies. However for those who lived through the decades, the date is remembered as a very important event in the history of the Naga people. It was on this day, that the first cease fire between the NNC and the government of India was signed and it was greeted with joy throughout the state; church bells rang and prayers were said at almost all churches in Nagaland. Although the agreement was officially declared on September 6, 1964 the actual agreement was signed on May 23, 1964 at Sakraba Village in Phek district. The cease fire in 1964 came after much suffering in Nagaland under intensive military operations. The period of cease fire was instrumental in making people realize the value of peace. To their credit, the then Naga political group also promoted a peaceful environment during which Nagaland state made big strides in development. After more than fifteen rounds of talks, both sides failed to break the deadlock and so the cease fire was abrogated by Delhi in 1972. In this regard, it may be said that the first cease fire brought an era of peace and development that proved crucial to the newly created state. As mentioned, despite the end of the cease fire, the peaceful environment continued primarily because those in the political movement had restrained themselves in the interest of their people. Though the first cease fire did not bring solution, yet and in a strange way, the wheels of peace brought changes that will be remembered.

DailyDevotion Watching With Jesus Stay here and watch with Me. —Matthew 26:38 “Watch with Me.” Jesus was saying, in effect, “Watch with no private point of view at all, but watch solely and entirely with Me.” In the early stages of our Christian life, we do not watch with Jesus, we watch for Him. We do not watch with Him through the revealed truth of the Bible even in the circumstances of our own lives. Our Lord is trying to introduce us to identification with Himself through a particular “Gethsemane” experience of our own. But we refuse to go, saying, “No, Lord, I can’t see the meaning of this, and besides, it’s very painful.” And how can we possibly watch with Someone who is so incomprehensible? How are we going to understand Jesus sufficiently to watch with Him in His Gethsemane, when we don’t even know why He is suffering? We don’t know how to watch with Him— we are only used to the idea of Jesus watching with us. The disciples loved Jesus Christ to the limit of their natural capacity, but they did not fully understand His purpose. In the Garden of Gethsemane they slept as a result of their own sorrow, and at the end of three years of the closest and most intimate relationship of their lives they “all…forsook Him and fled” (Matthew 26:56). “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 2:4). “They” refers to the same people, but something wonderful has happened between these two events— our Lord’s death, resurrection, and ascension— and the disciples have now been invaded and “filled with the Holy Spirit.” Our Lord had said, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). This meant that they learned to watch with Him the rest of their lives.

Post-mortem 53rd anniversary of IndoReflections on reaction Naga ceasefire day message of GPRN on ACAUT rally

t is surprising and uncomfortable to see a Government of a Nation stooping down so low as to malign an individual Citizen personally of his profession and his personal private relationships in the media; the Government of the People’s Republic (GoPR) of Nagalim did that, and that in malicious, pugnacious and indecent language! Mr. Khekiye Sema was transparent, straightforward, honest and open enough to criticize his kinsman Isak Chishi, Chairman of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim of being “rubber stamp shadow of the NSCN”. Khekiye has every right to his own opinion. Who in Nagaland who matters and has concern for the Naga, does not view the nice old religious Isak exactly as Khekiye had said. Isak Chishi spoke chaste Tenyidie (Angami) and when some of his old high School friends met him at Hebron, they spoke to him in Tenyidie. Isak spoke a few words in Angami hesitantly to his friends but said uneasily that in his presence Muivah likes him to speak with others in Nagamese! Mr. Khekiye was decent enough to attend Chishi’s Funeral and wrote nice words about the Old Man who has gone to the other side of the River. The whole of 1375-Worded GoPR statement in the Local News Media of 2 Sept 2017 is personal attack on Khekiye and contains mostly irrelevant undiplomatic, abrasive and pugnacious Words very unbecoming of an honorable Government. The GoPR has exposed itself to the world and to the Naga Public of its deplorable low diplomatic standard of decency. This is especially brazen and an odd anathema too to many Naga since the Group never tires of claiming itself the most knowledgeable, the most politically correct and the most internationally connected

representative of the Naga Nation; the Group has not understood ‘the writing on the Wall’! The Words and the Tone of the language the GoPR used in its description of the ACAUT Rally is brazenly ignorant in the sense that ACAUT (AGAINST CORRUPTION AND UNLAWFUL TAXATION) was formed mainly against the GoPR Taxations with the ‘Bhuut’ and the Barrel of the GoPR Gun. The former Chief Minister and presently MP from Nagaland also claimed very surprisingly that the ACAUT RALLY against CORRUPTION IN NAGALAND has a ‘Political Agenda’. This is very surprising for a person not particularly known for Political Principles but generally viewed as big-hearted. Has politics beguiled him? The former CM however, corrected himself to some extent immediately by public statement that he is not opposed to ACAUT Rally against Corruption. Mr. Khekiye criticized Corruption in the Government of Nagaland, he even went to the extent of openly criticizing the NON-Participation of the NAGA COUNCIL OF DIMAPUR in the Rally and has aptly said the action of the Naga Council Dimapur not joining the Rally amounts to “Support for Corruption” in Nagaland. Let me quote what KHEKIYE said: “The Government of India must officially call all the six NNPGs to be included in the Naga political solution as an independent entity and not as under the NSCN (IM)”. This, he stated, is the meaning of inclusiveness. “Otherwise, there will be a civil war in Nagaland. This is the message that must reach the Government of India. This is a message that must reach the NSCN (IM).” No Naga, I have heard ever, condemned the IM for fighting war

with the Indian Army. It is true the Army treated Naga individually, in Groups and Villages even Noncombatants inhumanly. One day, India must scratch its conscience and apologize to the Naga for the Army’s inhuman treatment of the Naga as Australia and Canada has done to the Indigenous of the land. The NSCN (IM) cannot take a holier than thou stance on this Issue of shedding blood of the Naga. There is a saying: ‘when you point your fore finger at others, the remaining 4 fingers point at yourself ’. On the Issue of ‘Naga Killing Naga’, the IM started it with their adopted Mao’s Principle of ‘Political Power comes through the Barrel of the Gun’. They love Political Power more than their People. The IM appears do not understand the main reason most Nagas fear and dislike them: it is their occupation of protecting their notorious but effective Principle of the ‘barrel of the Gun’ for every kind of Political, Social, Commercial BusinessTaxations in the Naga Society. The GoPR Statement of 2 Sept 2017, the last Para, calls for the conscience of all Naga to their vain Idea that GoPR alone fights for all the “Millions of Nagas outside the present State of Nagaland”. The fundamental Truth of the Naga’s fight is: Every Naga gives his life for his Own Territory, not for others. The IM often engages NonNaga for Naga National Movement, an anathema the IM does not seem to perceive. If the Naga of present Nagaland State enjoy the fruits of Nagaland; it is by themselves and not by others who like to enjoy it. Like it or not, the Naga of Nagaland will decide his own destiny, not by others. Thepfulhouvi Solo. IFS Retd (RR-68)

he Government of India was aware of the Rights of the Nagas, however, since the Naga Nation was small, weak and her population less, India wanted to dominate and subjugate the Nagas. The Indian forces invaded the Naga territory and perpetrated barbaric and inhuman atrocities on the Nagas added with the wilful destruction of property. This led the Naga National Council (NNC) to establish the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) on 22nd March 1956 to defend and protect her rights, her territory, property and her people. When the undeclared war was going on between the two Nations for about 10 years, a Ceasefire was brought about to be effective from 6th September, 1964 through the mediation and intervention of the NBCC and personalities like J.P. Narayan, Michael Scott, B.P. Chaliha, etc. The Nation is eternally grateful to them and also indebted to the sacrifices of the Naga patriots for giving us a history we can be proud of and their memories will be cherished and treasured for all times to come. After signing the Ceasefire, Peace talk was started between the two Nations. The First was held in Nagaland and rest were held at Delhi at the Prime Minister level but no settlement could be reached. Why did the Peace talks fail? There may have been many reasons but the main reason was because the attitude and approach of the GOI was wrong and also India was not sincere enough. What should have been resolved with the NNC and FGN, GOI chose to sign the agreement known as the 16th Point Agreement with the Naga Peoples’ Convention, a Naga group formed by India. This resulted in the creation of the state of Nagaland within the Indian Union. This was a great

fighters freely steal and misusepublic money in Nagaland and elsewhere. ACUAT is the first people’s movement in Nagaland addressing the corruption issue and I am sure it will contribute much in transforming our society. As humans we have our own limitations and failures, and let us not look at those negative aspect only, but let us appreciate the courageous act and sacrifice making by ACUAT for the Naga society. Let us encourage and support them. FA has been discussing for the last two years and we are all looking forwardto its final outcome. It is a great initiative and we give credit to NSCN-IM. I am not a political analyst, however,I do not see immediate positive outcome in the coming decades. I whole heartedly welcome the delay tactic in settlement. We need to read between the lines of statements of NSCI-IM leadership and negotiator of GoI. However,FA has given moral boost to NSCN-IM to claim the legitimacy of the organization and of tax collection and for GoI, it shows its commitment and sincerity in solving half a century Naga issue. Exclusion of larger Naga factional groups and civil societies in final settlement, and not disclosing the FA for the last two years itself speaks

blunder committed by India. The Nagas were not under the Indian Constitution but they forced the Nagas to come under it. The GOI had inaugurated the state of Nagaland and on top of this signed Ceasefire with FGN and was going to have Dialogue. In 1972 GOI unilaterally abrogated the Ceasefire and unleashed war against the Nagas. Then in 1975, GOI signed the Shillong Accord with some so called “Representatives of Underground Organization” which created more confusion. After a gap of more than 30 (Thirty) years in 1997, GOI entered into Ceasefire with NSCN IM, a rebel group which broke out of the NNC and FGN and started the “Peace Process” resulting in the signing of the Framework Agreement on 3rd August 2015. The contents of this agreement have been kept secret till date and no sensible person will give blind support. Without Sovereignty the Naga people will not accept the agreement because the betrayal of a cause for which thousands of lives have been sacrificed is not possible. It is a fact that the Naga political issue has be resolved soon but this does not mean that any group of people can barter for any agreement. How many times and with how many different groups will the GOI enter into Ceasefire? Nagas are clear about our rights and can no longer be fooled. The Indo-Naga problem is more than 70 years old and the solution and settlement should pose as a challenge to the wisdom, maturity and statesmanship of the Indian leaders. Before some unseen circumstance arises, without making any more mistakes the GOI should seriously ponder, boldly decide and arrive at a solution with the legitimate group at an early date. Gen.(Retd) Thinoselie M. Keyho, President, NNC

of the strategy of both sides. The GoI has also consistently maintained settlement within Indian constitution which they know that it will not be agreeable to Naga public. This open opportunity for delay strategy for both parties. The discussion will go on. At this juncture, we should all come together in one common platform andcome up with a clear road map to root out corruption to foster round development. People want economic progress, self-reliance and development. I hope all the factional groups will seize the opportunity to focus in rooting out corruption and economic development in the coming years so that they regain people’s confidence. Any organization who stand for unity, development and dismantling institutionalized corruption will surely gain support from the people. We now realize that corruption is the root of evil, hatred, mistrust and underdevelopment. Like ACUAT, all the factional groups, churches and civil societies raise their voices collectively and powerfully against the corruption. We want to build our nation onthe foundation of justice, peace and prosperity, but not on corruption. Wati Longchar, Hualien, Taiwan

Reader’s Post September 3 incident

I deeply saddened and mourn the death of late Swudeve Nakro who was murdered on Sept 3 and share my sorrow to the bereaved family. Talking to myself how such an barbaric and inhuman act has happened in My Land and praying that law enforcing agency immediately arrest and book those evil act. Thank you Tokhevi L Jakhalu, Zunheboto of this newspaper nor that of the Editor in any manner.

North Korea said it tested a hydrogen bomb on Sunday, the country’s sixth nuclear test. “The U.S. will receive more gift packages from my country as long as it relies on reckless provocations and futile attempts to put pressure on the DPRK,” Han said today, addressing the U.N. Nayapara (Bangladesh), Sep 5 (IANS/ AKI): Around 123,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh to escape violence in Myanmar in the past 10 days amid an accelerating influx, the United Nations said on Tuesday. “UNHCR is gravely concerned about the continuing conflict in Myanmar and by reports that civilians have died trying to seek safety,” the UN refugee agency said in a statement. Thousands of people, including women and children, were streaming across the border into southeast Bangladesh after walking for days through forests, rice paddies and jungles to reach safety and were now crowded into existing camps and sheltering at makeshift sites. Several thousand people were believed to have drowned trying to cross the river that separates Myanmar from Bangladesh. Many are in dire need of food and water. “Those who have made it to Bangladesh are in poor condition... They are hungry, weak and sick,”

said UNHCR. “An unknown number could still be stranded at the border,” UNHCR warned. Separately, the UN migration agency the International Organisation for Migration said on Tuesday that it and partner agencies operating in the area were appealing for $18 million to help the refugees over the next three months.

More than 30,000 Rohingya are estimated to have sought shelter in the existing refugee camps of Kutupalong and Nayapara, which are “at breaking point”, the agency stated. Other Rohingyas are being hosted by refugee families and in refugee schools, community centres, Islamic schools and other buildings, said UNHCR. “We are running out

of available space,” the agency said. UNHCR said it was working with local authorities and an NGO partner to provide essential items for the refugees including clothes, plastic sheets and sleeping mats. “There is an urgent need for additional emergency shelters and land as more refugees arrive,” UNCHR said.

Syria army breaks years-long IS siege on Deir Ezzor Deir Ezzor (Syria), Sep 5 (AFP): Syria’s army Tuesday broke a years-long Islamic State group siege on the government enclave of Deir Ezzor city as it battles to expel the jihadists from a key stronghold. The jihadist group has already lost more than half of its nearby bastion of Raqa to US-backed forces, and the loss of Deir Ezzor city and the surrounding oilrich province would leave it with only a handful of isolated outposts. Syria’s army and allied fighters, backed by Russian

air support, have been advancing towards Deir Ezzor on several fronts in recent weeks, and today arrived inside the Brigade 137 base on its western edge. “The Syrian Arab Army this afternoon broke the siege on Deir Ezzor city after its advancing forces arrived from the western province to Brigade 137,” state news agency SANA said. State media reported celebrations inside the government- held parts of the city as the troops arrived. Government forces and tens of thousands of civil-

ians in the city have been trapped under IS siege for over two years, facing food and medical shortages. Early this year, the government-held parts of the city were cut in two by an IS offensive. The army’s advance to the Brigade 137 base today breaks the siege on the northern part of the city, to which it is connected by a road. But a southern government-held section, including the key military airport, remains surrounded.

XIAMEN, Sep 5 (Agencies): Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of a global “catastrophe” unless a diplomatic solution ove r N o r t h Ko r e a i s reached, saying imposing further sanctions on Pyongyang would be useless. Putin’s comments, following an international summit in China, came after the United States called for the “strongest possible measures” against North Korea for detonating what it called a hydrogen bomb on Sunday. The announcement and North Korea’s claim that it could mount the warhead on a missile, dramatically upped the stakes in Pyongyang’s standoff with the international community over its banned weapons programmes. Putin said Russia “condemns” North Korea’s actions as “provocative”. Putin called for dialogue on the crisis and warned against other actions that could cause the situation to escalate. “All of this can lead to a global planetary catastrophe and a great number of victims,” he said.

He also slammed Pakistan for its support to terror groups and warned Islamabad of consequences if it continues to do so. “This will result in better engagement as we want to resolve all matters peacefully since any American action in Pakistan will cause instability,” Dastagir added. India beat Macau 2-0 in Asian Qualifier

to be happy sitting back. Udanta and Narayan Das found ample space on the wings but the hosts managed to keep the crosses out. Indian midfielders were dictating the game as they found acres of space near the box. Jeje cut in from the left but Sunil’s powerful shot was blocked out. Narzary showed some deft footwork as he twisted and turned but his shot was kept out by the keeper. A flurry in the 36th minute saw Nazary and Rowllin combining well but the clearance made its way to Eugeneson whose

long ranger hit the crossbar. Rowllin latched on to the rebound but his shot too was saved by the goalkeeper. India did have their chances and poor finishing robbed them of an early lead. Macau were also lucky when the crosspiece came to their rescue in the first half as the boys went into the break goal-less. Constantine opted to introduce Balwant Singh after the break having withdrawn Eugenson Lyngdoh who saw his effort strike the crossbar in the 36th minute of the first-half. Balwant’s introduction

was just what the doctor ordered as he made an impact straightaway troubling the Macau backline. Pritam Kotal’s cross to him was headed just wide. Also in the second half, a Sunil Chhetri header off a Pritam Kotal cross bounced off the crosspiece and then dropped on the goal line only to be collected by the rival goalkeeper. A goal seemed ominous and it did arrive in the 57th minute when Balwant found the back of the net with a rising header as he met Narayan Das’ perfect ball into the box. Balwant scoring his second goal for the national team after having scored his first against Mauritius in the recently concluded Hero TriNation series. The misery for the hosts was compounded when a terrible error by a defender led to Balwant capitalising on the goof-up and thus doubling the lead for India in the 81st minute. This was Balwant’s third goal in as many games since his reinduction in the national team. The men at the back, too, kept things tidy, although they didn’t have much to do with Macau adopting an ultra-defensive strategy all throughout and were never willing to open up.

Harikrishna moves into tie-breaker in Chess WC

P. Harikrishna

Tbilisi, Sep 5 (IANS): Indian Grand Master P. Harikrishna recuperated quickly from the opening game loss with a win over GM Yuri Gonzalez Vidal in the second game and take the tie into the tiebreaker of the FIDE World Cup here. The World No. 20 Indian, playing with white pieces in this round on Monday, was wary of his opponent’s attacking prowess and started off with

careful calculated moves. However, the Cuban was looking to carry on his winning streak and tried to put Harikrishna on the back foot from the initial stages of the game. The positions remained equal till the 20th move, but the Indian broke away after a miscalculated move by Vidal and kept mounting the pressure till there was no way out for his opponent. The game was long and grueling and lasted a total of 41 moves for Harikrishna to take a full point from it and lead it to the tie-breaker. Harikrishna will now look to keep the momentum in his favour as he takes on Vidal in the tiebreaker round and continue his quest for a spot at the Candidates’ Tournament.

gutted out a 7-6 (2), 1-6, 6-4, fourth-round upset of fourth-seeded Elena Svitolina, rallying into the first U.S. Open quarterfinals of her career. Playing late into the night yet again, she pulled out a tiebreaker to take the first set, then she won the last four games to take the third set — and the match. “I don’t really know what I’m feeling right now. It hasn’t been very long. But it means the world to me to make the quarterfinals,’’ Keys said. “It was a really rough start to my year. This is just amazing. … I’m really proud of myself for digging deep and figuring that out.” “I definitely felt like I hit a wall at the beginning of the second set. My energy dropped. Once I got broken in the third, I just kept telling myself just try to figure it out, just get as many balls in as you can. I was lucky that I had an amazing crowd and atmosphere. They definitely helped me pull through in that third set.” She kept her composure and joined No. 9 Venus Williams, No. 20 Coco Vandeweghe, and unseeded Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals. It’s the first time four American women reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals since 2002, when Williams, her sister Serena, Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport and Monica Seles did so.

The 28-year-old Argentine 24th seed rallied past Austrian sixth seed Thiem 1-6, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6(1), 6-4 in an emotional fightback, which is only his second career victory after falling two sets down, reports Xinhua news agency. “Oh my God,” Del Potro told the crowd after the match on the court. “I was sick for the last two days. I came here trying to

play the best I can and then when I see this crowd cheering for me, I was trying to play better every game.” “I think I fight like this because of you guys so thank you very much.” Del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion, will next face 19-time Grand Slam champion Federer, the Swiss third seed, who got past German 33rd seed Philipp Kohlschreiber. Del Potro defeated Federer in a five-set final eight years ago here for his only Grand Slam title, when he also dispatched Rafael Nadal in the semifinals. Federer eased into last eight with a 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 win over Philipp Kohlschreiber, taking his record over the

Germany crush Norway in WC qualifier S t u ttg a rt, S e p 5 (IANS): Reigning FIFA World Cup champions Germany reaped their eighth win in as many games after crushing Norway 6-0 in Group C of the 2018 football World Cup qualifiers. The Germans on Monday showed no mercy with hapless Norway and establish a four-goal lead within 40 minutes to smooth the way for the win owing to Timo Werner’ s first-half brace. Joachim Loew’s men took the reins from the kickoff to break the deadlock with just ten minutes played when Mesut Ozil had all time and space inside the box to make the most out of Jonas Hector’s assist. Ozil remained in the thick of things as he assisted forward Julian Draxler, who slotted home the 2-0 lead seven minutes after the opener. The hosts gained momentum whereas Norway remained unable to gain a foothold into the game. Hence, Germany tripled the lead after 21-year-old RB Leipzig star Werner utilised Toni Kroos’ square pass to make it 3-0 in the 21st minute. Werner wasn’t done with the scoring as he sealed his brace after heading home Thomas Mueller’s cross into the box five minutes before the half-time. After the restart, Germany started where they left

off as substitute midfielder Leon Goretzka nodded the 5-0 lead following a pinpoint cross from Draxler five minutes into the second half. Norway were unable to hold the pace and to put up resistance as dominant Germany added their sixth goal in the 79th minute through substitute striker Mario Gomez, who rounded off the 6-0 with a header. With the result, Germany wrapped up their eighth win in as many games in Group C of the World Cup qualification. However, they will have to wait until October to book their place for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

England fight back to beat Slovakia

England fought back from an early deficit to beat Slovakia 2-1 and take firm control of World Cup quali-

fying Group F. Slovakia needed just three minutes to take the lead at Wembley, with Stanislav Lobotka dispossessing Marcus Rashford before playing a clever onetwo with Adam Nemec and then slotting the ball past Joe Hart. But England managed to pull level after 37 minutes when Eric Dier met Rashford’s corner at the near post and fired first time past Martin Dubravka. And the hosts pulled ahead before the hour mark as Rashford picked up the ball from Jordan Henderson before taking a touch and rifling a low strike into the far corner from the edge of the box. England now hold a five-point advantage over Slovakia atop the group and will qualify for Russia if they avoid defeat in their final two qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania.

Australia reach 225-2 against Bangladesh

CHITTAGONG, Sep 5 (Agencies): An unbeaten century stand between David Warner and Peter Handscomb led Australia’s strong reply against Bangladesh on day two of the second and final Test in Chittagong on Tuesday. The visitors were 225-2 at stumps in their first innings, trailing by 80 runs after Bangladesh were bowled out for 305. Warner was batting on 88 with Handscomb on 69 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Skipper Steve Smith hit a gritty 58 off 94 balls before being bowled by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam as the visitors slipped to 98-2. The left-handed Warner and Handscomb then put together 127 runs to thwart the Bangladesh bowling attack, which failed to take a wicket in the final session of play. Handscomb, who recorded his fourth Test fifty in just his 10th game, took regular drinks breaks as he battled exhaustion and dehydration in the final

and then Mushfiqur Rahim missed a stumping when he was on 73, with Taijul and Mehedi Hasan being the unlucky bowlers. Warner’s opening partner Matt Renshaw departed early, dismissed by fast

bowler Mustafizur Rahman for four before the lunch break. The left-hander tried to tickle a sliding delivery down the leg side but wicketkeeper Rahim took a stunning catch. Warner was then involved in a 93-run second-wicket partnership with Smith as the pair steadied the innings. Smith, who registered his 21st Test half-century, was done in by an arm ball from Taijul that sneaked through the bat-pad gap to hit the middle stump. Earlier, Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon claimed seven wickets to help bowl out the hosts for 305 in the first session. Lyon returned impressive figures of 7-94 including Rahim’s prized scalp for 68. Bangladesh lead the series 1-0 after registering their first-ever Test win against Australia last week. The home team has tightened security after the visitors’ team bus was hit with a stone following the end of play on day one.
