Centre may soon invite NNPGs for talks: RN Ravi
Spl. Correspondent
NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (NPN): Government of India’s Interlocutor to Naga Talks, R.N. Ravi has indicated that the Centre was likely to invite the six groups- under the banner of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs)- to be part of the ongoing peace process. Ravi, in an exclusive interview to Nagaland Post, said: “I am likely to engage them in the peace process soon, maybe this month.” The interlocutor also reiterated his earlier statement that “there will be only one peace process and one agreement for the Naga. The following is the excerpts of the interview. NP: When is Government of India going to invite NNPGs for formal talks? Ravi: Government of India is committed to an inclusive solution to the Naga political issue. Coming of the six Naga groups together is an encouraging development consistent with the spirit of inclusiveness.
One held for attempted rape Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, SEP 4 (NPN): An elderly man, non-Naga, was reportedly apprehended by residents of Sovima village for allegedly trying to rape a minor girl on Monday night. According to reports, the victim was a class III student. The accused was brought before the public by the womenfolk of the village and was later handed over to police. When contacted, PRO Dimapur police confirmed that the accused was nabbed by the residents and handed over to police. PRO however said that the details were yet to be established. Meanwhile, a resident of Sovima village said that the incident took place when the victim’s parents were away from home. The accused in his mid 60s came to the house and allegedly attempted to rape the minor. However, it was only when a teenage girl in the neighbourhood-- sensing something suspicious, saw the incident and alerted the nearby residents. The womenfolk swung into action and apprehended the accused with the help of others and handed over to the police.

They are in touch with me and they have assured me of constructive cooperation. I am likely to engage them in the peace process soon, maybe this month. NP: A section of the media has been publishing alleged details of the ongoing negotiation. How far is it true? Ravi: I have seen some of this media reports. These are ill informed, speculative and mischievous apparently with an intention to undermine the peace process. NP: Has the Centre come to an agreement with NSCN (I-M) for separate Naga national flag, constitution and defence? Ravi: These issues along with several others have been on the table, but the final agreement is yet to materialise. Government of India and NSCN (I-M) have been seeking to resolve the Naga issue with due regard to each other’s positions, difficulties and contemporary realities. NP: When are you likely to sign final agreement?
Ravi: The ongoing talks with the NSCN (I-M) is in the advanced stage. I have made it clear that there will be only one peace process and one agreement because we cannot fragment the Naga issue. While the formal negotiation has been going on with the NSCN (I-M) I have been reaching out to other stakeholders for their views and cooperation. Of course we cannot wait indefinitely for those who do not respond positively to our call of inclusiveness. We are working towards signing a final agreement at the earliest. NP: With talks in the advanced stage. How are you going to accommodate other Naga Political Groups in the peace process? Ravi: I have made it clear that the ongoing talks are about the Naga issue and not about the NSCN (I-M) and the leaders negotiating with me are Naga interlocutors. However, since the solution to Naga issue has to be inclusive there is ample space to accommodate all in the Naga Peace Process.
RBI: no info on how much black Army carries out op against NSCN(K) money removed by note ban along Indo-Myanmar border; 1 killed
NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): The RBI has told a parliamentary panel that it has “no information” on how much black money has been extinguished as a result of demonetisation of Rs 500/1,000 notes or about unaccounted cash legitimised through exchange of currency post note ban. Stating that an estimated Rs 15.28 lakh crore in junked notes has come back “subject to future corrections based on verification process”, the Reserve Bank also said it has “no information” whether demonetisation is being planned to be implemented at regular intervals. The RBI has been facing flak from the opposition parties for demonetisation and delay in disclosing figures on the junked notes, even as the government has maintained that the November 8, 2016 decision to ban Rs 500/1,000 notes in circulation at that time has helped in curbing black money, among other benefits. Last week in its annual report, the RBI finally made public the details of the
junked notes that have come back into the system putting the figure at Rs 15.28 lakh crore. The same figure has now been shared with the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance. Replying to queries from the panel, the RBI said the verification for authenticity and numerical accuracy are still on, while some of the specified bank notes (old Rs 500/1,000 notes) which were accepted by banks and post offices are still lying in currency chests. The central bank also informed the panel that the completion of the process of verification will take time in view of the large volume involved. “Till such time, these notes are processed by the RBI, their numerical accuracy and authenticity, only in estimation of SBNs received back is possible. Subject to future correction, based on verification process when completed, the estimated value of SBNs received as on June 30 is Rs 15.28 trillion,” the RBI said in its written reply to the panel.
ITANAGAR/NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (AGENCIES/PTI): The Army on Monday carried out a major operation against Naga insurgent group NSCN (K) near the IndoMyanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh in which one hardcore militant was killed and another injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is travelling to Myanmar tomorrow on a three-day visit during which the issue of defence and security cooperation, including cross-border activities by certain insurgent groups, are likely to figure in his talks with the leadership there. The Army team destroyed a temporary hideout of the NSCN (K) and recovered an AK 47 rifle, ammunitions and radio sets in the operation near Votnu village in Longding district, a senior army official said. In New Delhi, Army chief General Bipin Rawat met Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, who hails from Arunachal, and the operation against the Khaplang faction of the
NSCN is believed to have figured in the discussion. Myanmar is one of India’s strategic neighbours and shares a 1,640km-long border with a number of northeastern states including Arunachal Pradesh, militancy-hit Nagaland and Manipur. India has been concerned over some militant groups from the Northeast region taking shelter in Myanmar. The country has been assuring India that it would not allow any insurgent group to use its territory against India. In June, 2015, the Indian Army had carried out an operation in areas near the Indo-Myanmar against the NSCN (K) militants, days after militants had killed 18 Army men in Manipur. Gen Rawat, however, sought to downplay the operation saying such encounters occur regularly. “It was a normal encounter. These operations go on everyday. Nothing big about this operation,” he told reporters after the meeting. Army sources said similar operations against
NSCN(K) have been taking place in Changlang and Kunnu areas in the last 10 days. An NSCN (K) militant was killed near Kunnu village on September 1. The Army today launched a “swift and stealthy” operation after getting specific inputs about presence of NSCN(K) militants in near Votnu village, said an army official. The forces came under heavy fire from the rebels and retaliated in which one militant was killed and another was injured, Defence spokesman Col. Chiranjit Konwer said in Itanagar. Today’s operation has struck a blow to the illegal activities being carried out by the underground outfit in the area, he added. Using the cover of dense vegetation, the remaining militants escaped. The team later located and destroyed a shelter, the officials said. A massive search operation has been launched in the area to capture the militants who managed to escape, they said.
Gov denounces practice of proxy teachers ANTA threatens state-wide taxi strike DIMAPUR, SEP 4 (NPN): On the eve of the Teacher’s Day, the governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya, has strongly denounced the prevalent practice of proxy teachers in government-run schools in the state, saying “such practice should stop.” In his message on the occasion of Teacher’s Day, Acharya pointed out that gover nment appointed teachers were getting good salary compared to private school teachers. However, he said that some of the government teachers escape from their duties by appointing proxy teachers against their name in the place of postings. The governor said that even though a small section of government teachers carry out such practices, it cannot be pardoned by God and the government. While extending his greetings and felicitations to teachers throughout the state, the governor said
Teachers’ Day was an occasion when the dedicated services of the teachers of the nation were recognised. He said teachers were engaged in building and strengthening the intellectual and ethical foundations of the children. “A teacher is one of the most regarded professions in the society and is respected as next to God,” Acharya said. Asserting that every successful person remembered with joy and pride the elementary school days and their teachers, the governor, however, said that the greed for easy money has changed the scenario and education has become a business. He maintained that teaching was not just another profession but was a divine responsibility to guide and enlighten. Achar ya reminded the teachers that the influences and experiences they share with their students
would remain with them for a lifetime. “You are also laying the foundation and the building blocks of the society,” Acharya said. Further, the governor said that teaching was a responsibility of great significance “because on this depends how our present and future generations will thrive.” Urging the Teachers to be the ‘game changer’ and socially accountable, the governor said that the students, when they come out, must be an asset to the society, employable, create wealth out of natural resources. In the present day, Acharya said learning was often equated with either collection of information or mastery of skills for occupations and jobs. “Yes, that is important but I call upon you to widen the horizon of thinking of your students,” he said. The governor also urged the teachers to en-
courage students to think critically about broader issues concerning the nation, society and the environment. “Our goal must be to create good Citizens who are capable of preserving the past and creating the future,” Acharya said. According to governor, the lessons in good citizenship inculcated at a young age would go a long way in creating a better society. He said that this could be as simple as traffic rules, cleanliness, gender sensitization, concern for the weak and reverence for the elders. “Let us re-dedicate ourselves to this task and this duty,” Acharya said. Meanwhile, the governor conveyed his good wishes to the entire teaching community and expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Nagaland for their lifetime of dedication and commitment to the great cause of educating the youth.

BRICS declaration names Pak-based terror groups Education minister initiates XIAMEN, SEP 4 (IANS): In a big win for India’s campaign against terrorism emanating from Pakistan, the BRICS countries on Monday named the Pakistanbased groups like Lashkare-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-eMohammad (JeM) while calling for a comprehensive approach to combat terrorism. Last year at the 8th BRICS Summit in Goa, China had reportedly opposed the inclusion of the Pakistan-backed terrorist outfits in the declaration. “We express concern on the security situation in the region and violence caused by the Taliban, ISIL/ DAISH, Al Qaeda and its affiliates including Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement, Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, TTP (Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan) and Hizb ut-Tahrir,” said
the Xiamen declaration, adopted at the 9th BRICS Summit here. The summit was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Presidents Xi Jinping of China, Vladimir Putin of Russia, Michel Temer of Brazil and Jacob Zuma of South Africa. JeM chief Masood Azhar has been blamed for deadly cross-border terror attacks on Indian military establishments. India has moved the UN to declare Azhar an international terrorist but China has repeatedly put a hold on the proposal. The LeT was held responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attack that left 166 Indians and foreigners dead. The Xiamen declaration condemned terrorism in all its its forms and manifestations, saying there can be no justification whatsoever for any act of terrorism. And
it deplored all terror attacks worldwide, including in BRICS countries. Without naming Pakistan, the statement said: “We reaffirm that those responsible for committing, organising or supporting terrorist acts must be held accountable. “Recalling the primary leading role and responsibility of states in preventing and countering terrorism, we stress the necessity to develop international cooperation, in accordance with the principles of international law, including that of sovereign equality of states and non-interference in their internal affairs.” The BRICS countries backed the efforts of the Afghan security forces to defeat terrorism. “We strongly condemn terrorist attacks resulting in death to innocent Afghan nationals. There is a need for immediate cessation of
violence. “We reaffirm our support to the people of Afghanistan in their efforts to achieve ‘Afghan-led and Afghan-owned’ peace and national reconciliation, to the ongoing international efforts... We support the efforts of the Afghan... security Forces in fighting terrorist organisations. “We call upon all nations to adopt a comprehensive approach in combating terrorism, which should include countering radicalization, recruitment, movement of terrorists including foreign terrorist fighters, blocking sources of financing terrorism including, for instance, through organised crime by means of money-laundering, supply of weapons, drug trafficking and other criminal activities, dismantling terrorist bases, and countering misuse of the internet including social
media by terrorist entities through misuse of the latest Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). “We are committed to prevent and counter the growing spread of terrorist narratives, and to tackle all sources, techniques and channels of terrorist financing... We recall the responsibility of all States to prevent financing of terrorist networks and terrorist actions from their territories.” The declaration urged the international community to establish a genuinely broad international counterterrorism coalition and support the UN’s central coordinating role in this regard. “We stress that the fight against terrorism must be conducted in accordance with international law, including the Charter of the UN, international refugee and humanitarian law, human rights and fundamental freedoms...
action to revamp department
DIMAPUR, SEP 4 (NPN): Taking serious note of the complaints received from various organizations, Nagaland School Education minister, Tokheho Yepthomi has initiated the process of revamping the School Education department. In a letter reportedly written to the legislators, Tokheho sought their cooperation with the department, while undertaking the process of redeployment of attached teachers to their respective place of posting, for smooth functioning of government schools in the state. According to the letter, 734 teachers were not performing their duties as assigned, creating problems in the management and functioning of government schools in the state. In a startling revela-
tion, it was pointed out that 43 teachers were attached to various VIPs, 76 Teachers attached to the directorate of school education. On the other hand 64 teachers were attached to state mission office (RMSA) and state mission authority office of SSA while 551 were attached to various DEO and SDEO offices in the districts and sub-divisions. Tokheho appraised the MLAs that the School Education department had been facing problems due to the shortage of teachers in various government schools in recent years. The joint venture of government of Nagaland in partnership with YouthNet, Zynorique Initiatives and the department of Employment, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship was launched on March 25. Deputy Commissioner Kohima Rajesh Soundararajan lauded the initiative of the ZIS and Youth Net stating that such non-selfish and community oriented initiatives would take the state forward. He said that rather than talking about other’s weakness instead of one’s own they should strive to be professional so as not to weaken work culture. He encouraged the youth to look for the next level reminding that one’s attitude towards their work would testify ones’ profes-

Further Soundararajan insisted that the training team must form a group and said once the construction workers became professionals, they would be called for all kinds of work. DC said that in this way, the demand for workers from outside the state would decrease, and he asked them to promote themselves actively in social media. Joint director, ESD&E

Cong walk out in Assam assembly Guwahati, Sep 4 (PTI): Opposition Congress Monday staged a walkout from the Assam Assembly on its opening day after the Speaker Hiten Goswami reserved his ruling on its adjournment motion to discuss price rise. After Question Hour, Congress Legislative Party leader Debabrata Saikia and other party members sought adjournment of the other business of the house to discuss price rise of essential goods. Saikia said the price of LPG cylinders, petrol and diesel was also rising
leading to hardship of common people. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said the issue raised is not of recent occurrence as price rise has been going on for the last 15 years. Patowary said the adjournment motion should be rejected as the issue can be brought up later. As the Speaker was giving his ruling, Congress member and former minister Rockybul Hussain stood up and started reading from the Rule book on admissibility of
the motion. An argument ensued between the two and the parliamentary affairs minister said the speaker’s ruling is final in the House. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said, there are precedences when both treasury and opposition benches adjust and it is better to adjust than having a dictatorial attitude. The speaker then reserved his ruling. Following this, Congress members staged a walkout protesting against not being allowed to raise the price rise issue.

with regard to the demand of the people. “The process for drafting the bill is delayed due to frequent floods and other unavoidable business of the new government. Government will now consult all stake holders and experts to formulate a bill that will not cause any conflicts among the communities,” he added. It may be mentioned here that the people of Manipur, particularly in the valley, have been pressing the state government to introduce a regulation to check the ever increasing population of outsiders (NonManipuris) in the state. After a widespread violent agitation in 2015, Manipur legislative Assembly passed three bills to regulate entry to Manipur. However, the bills were withheld by the President of India after Manipur Governor forwarded for his ascent. Moreover, controversy surfaced after people in hill districts, particularly Churachandpur district opposed the bills alleging that the bills infringe on the rights of the tribal people.

Chief minister assures bill acceptable to all soon
Telheiba claimed that hill people have agreed to a new bill which would be acceptable to all indigenous communities unlike the previous instance when some sections of people raised uproar against the three bills passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly. He insisted that Manipur government should pass the proposed bill during the winter session of the state Assembly. He further demanded the government to ban non-local people from casting votes and contesting elections in the forthcoming general elections to the gram panchayats on October 7, 2017. On the other hand, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh Monday said that his government was working to draft a bill to protect the indigenous people of the state acceptable to all stakeholders and communities living together in the state. Centre refuses assurance on Rohingyas deportation in SC
Rohingya Muslim immigrants, who fled to India after violence in the western Rakhine State of Myanmar. New Delhi, Sep 4 (AGENCIES): The Centre on Monday refused in the Supreme Court to give 40,000 Rohingya Muslim immigrants an assurance that it will not move for their deportation back to Myanmar. Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, remained non-committal on Monday when the two Rohingyas who moved the Supreme Court tried to draw an assurance that the government would not move against their community or take “coercive steps” as the apex court was now in the picture. “I am not making any
such statements,” Mehta said categorically. Listing the case for hearing on September 11, a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra asked advocate Prashant Bhushan — appearing for the two Rohingyas Mohammad Salimullah and Mohammad Shaqir — to first serve the copy of their petition on the Centre. The court then asked Mehta to take instructions from the government on the plea made by the Rohingyas to protect their life and liberty. “The 40,000 Rohingyas are the world’s most wretched people. They have been persecuted everywhere.
Fall in food production likely due to floods, drought N e w D e l h i , S EP 4 (AGENCIES): India witnessed a sharp rise in weather-related calamities this year, with farming in as many as 18 states across the country being affected by floods, heavy rain or drought. Top officials cited data compiled by the ministry of agriculture and farmers’ welfare to state that nearly four million hectares of agricultural land have fallen victim to the vagaries of nature this monsoon, resulting in a drop in area under cultivation for crops such as rice, pulses and oilseeds. For instance, the area under rice cultivation fell from 37.2 million hectares in 2016 to 36.6 million hectares this year. While floods hit Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh this monsoon, another five – Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Mizoram
– were pounded by heavy rainfall. The southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Telangana, on the other hand, witnessed drought conditions. Despite this, officials believe the total agricultural output for the year will not suffer but – in the best case scenario – even touch last year’s levels. “Rice production may go down, but that will not affect our food security. We have buffer stocks,” a ministry official said. Agriculture secretary SK Pattanayak admitted to certain “inter-crop concerns”, but discounted fears of an impending crop shortage in the market. “Flood damage will not significantly affect our production targets,” he said. These assurances, however, may not be able to completely dispel fears of heightened farmer distress and a sharp spike in food prices due to low production in the coming months.
Protect them,” Mr. Bhushan, assisted by advocate Pranav Sachdeva, made an emotional opening statement before the Bench. But as of now, the court refused to commit to anything. “Let’s see,” Chief Justice Misra said. The petition by the Rohingyas contended that any move to deport them would violate the constitutional guarantee of the Indian State to “protect the life and liberty of every human being, whether citizen or not.” Their deportment would violate India’s commitment to international conventions which recognise the “Principle of

Non-Refoulement.” This principle of customary international law prohibits the deportation of refugees to a country where they face threat to their lives. The UNHRC Report of 2016 on the Human Rights violations and abuses against Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar has noted successive patterns of serious human rights violations to the right to life, liberty and security of the Rohingyas by state security forces and other officials in Myanmar. Violations include summary executions, enforced disappearance, arbitrary arrest and detention, torture and ill-treatment, forced labour, arbitrary arrest and detention of hundreds of Rohingyas, including women and children. Recently, the National Human Rights Commission had also issued notice to the government on the proposed deportment. Panic struck the refugee community following media reports of a statement by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju in Parliament in early August that the Central government has directed States to identify and deport illegal immigrants, including Rohingyas.
Sunanda case: Court asks police on need for time New Delhi, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): A court here on Monday asked a senior Delhi Police officer to appear and explain why they needed more time for investigation of Room 345 of Hotel Leela Palace where former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in January 2014. Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmender Singh asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police concerned to appear before him, observing that despite its order to de-seal the room, which has remained locked since January 17, 2014, the police are seeking more time on the pretext of investigation. The police told court that they have sent some more items collected from the room to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) and sought more time to keep the room sealed as they have to collect evidence. The court said it wants the DCP present on September 12, the next date fixed for hearing, due to lethargic attitude and laxity on part of investigating agency. On July 21, the court ordered the de-sealing of Room 345, saying that the hotel cannot be made to suffer continuously merely because the investigating team cannot ascertain the cause of death.
Beef will continue to be consumed in Kerala, says Kannanthanam New Delhi, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): On the first day in his new office as tourism minister, bureaucrat-turned-politician Alphons Kannanthanam touched upon the controversial issue of beef, saying it would continue to be consumed in Kerala. Talking to PTI, the 1979 Kerala cadre officer said that the BJP had never said that beef cannot be eaten. “As Goa chief minister, Manohar Parrikar has said that beef will be consumed in the state. Similarly, it will be consumed in Kerala,” he said. “The BJP does not mandate that beef cannot be eaten. We don’t dictate food habits in any place. It is for the people to decide,” he said. Kannanthanam said if a BJP-ruled state like Goa was eating beef, there should be no problem in Kerela. He later told a TV channel that he could be a bridge between the Christian community and the BJP. Addressing some of the concerns that were raised by the Christian community about the BJP in the past, Kannanthanam said it was mere propaganda. “There was a lot of propaganda in 2014, that if Modi comes to power

Inspirers of society
ndia honours teachers on September 5 on the occasion of the birthday of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, free India’s first vice president (1952–1962) and the second President from 1962 to 1967. Dr. Radhakrishnan came from a poor family but through his total dedication, allowed himself to be chiselled to achieve greater things in life by teachers in the German Missionary school he attended in Tirupati. This story of a poor boy who strived to reach the nation’s highest office, serves as an inspiration not only to teachers but also students. Dr. Radhakrishnan became a respected philosopher and a teacher par excellence, who made immense contribution towards Indian education system and who had dedicated the day to the teachers. Dr. Radhakrishnan believed that “teachers should be the best minds in the country.” The crucial role played by teachers in any society cannot be under estimated especially in an environment where globalism means being in tune with each other-economically, socially and materially. This is only possible in a society where education has reached a desired level. A true teacher will do more than just instruct their students; they will serve as mentors, coaches, disciplinarians, social workers, counsellors, confidantes, and many times, surrogate parents. Just as a mother plays a very crucial role in the development of a child’s mental, physical and spiritual values and then goes on to the next crucial phase of learning in educational institutions, teachers take charge to develop a holistic personality. Without teachers, the world today would be like the dark ages; ruled by ignorance and superstition. The different qualities of teachers has been categorised by William Arthur Ward, as the following- a mediocre teacher simply tells; a good teacher explains; a superior demonstrates while a great teacher inspires. As the world moves in high gear and as expectations rise higher; teachers have to be relevant to the emerging needs and trends. A great teacher is a gem and has impacted generations. The most essential quality of great teachers is in being inspirers. They treat every student in a special way and succeed in igniting the spark of excellence. Great teachers are also compassionate and empathise with their students. They mentor, advice and counsel students in good and in bad times. Today a teacher has to be relevant with the evolving shifts away from text books or curriculum. They have to be familiar with many issues globally or locally and also create awareness on matters such as global warming phenomenon, information and technology, inventions, HIV&AIDS, internet and the like. Teachers also have to prepare their students to become useful and self reliant. Teachers are honoured on a special day throughout the globe. In a world of fast changing values, that have made the old concept of a teacher seem relative; today a teacher has become a clone between the humane concern of the old and the “result oriented” concern of the contemporary world. If society wants to honor the work of the world’s teachers, and strengthen the education systems that need it most, then it must move beyond the theatre of a one-day annual event and engage the year-round commitment of making teaching an attractive profession and improving the well-being of our existing teaching force. That is the path to educational quality for students.
DailyDevotion His! They were Yours, You gave them to Me… —John 17:6 A missionary is someone in whom the Holy Spirit has brought about this realization: “You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19). To say, “I am not my own,” is to have reached a high point in my spiritual stature. The true nature of that life in actual everyday confusion is evidenced by the deliberate giving up of myself to another Person through a sovereign decision, and that Person is Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit interprets and explains the nature of Jesus to me to make me one with my Lord, not that I might simply become a trophy for His showcase. Our Lord never sent any of His disciples out on the basis of what He had done for them. It was not until after the resurrection, when the disciples had perceived through the power of the Holy Spirit who Jesus really was, that He said, “Go” (Matthew 28:19; also see Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:8). “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). He was not saying that this person cannot be good and upright, but that he cannot be someone over whom Jesus can write the word Mine. Any one of the relationships our Lord mentions in this verse can compete with our relationship with Him. I may prefer to belong to my mother, or to my wife, or to myself, but if that is the case, then, Jesus said, “[You] cannot be My disciple.” This does not mean that I will not be saved, but it does mean that I cannot be entirely His. Our Lord makes His disciple His very own possession, becoming responsible for him. “…you shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8). The desire that comes into a disciple is not one of doinganything for Jesus, but of being a perfect delight to Him. The missionary’s secret is truly being able to say, “I am His, and He is accomplishing His work and His purposes through me.” Be entirely His!

Post-mortem
A teacher’s thoughts A Teacher-centred Teacher’s Day A on Teachers’ Day T oday our nation celebrates Teachers’ Day with pride and on this auspicious day I convey my sincere greetings to all the dedicated teachers who strive hard to uplift the life of students through their tireless devotion to duty. Teachers are called the builders of nation and the prosperity and culture of a nation reflects the attitude and the way of functioning of its teachers. Even though majority of the educational institutions in our country do not have the state of the art infrastructure and human resources as available in the developed countries, professionals from our country are occupying respectable key positions in various prestigious organizations throughout the world and the achievements made by our country in the fields of Medicine, Science & Technology etc makes our country as an emerging super power in the world. This would not have been made possible without the dedicated contributions of teachers in all levels. Next to parents, teachers might be the only one who always looks at the progress of their children with pride and not with jealousy. Teachers always share the success stories of their students with pride to others and rarely one may come across teachers sharing the shortcomings of their students with others. Unfortunately most of the teachers in our country are underpaid and do not get recognized for their selfless services. Many leaders greet teachers on Teachers’ Day and most of them conveniently forget it from the very next day. They not only forget about the teachers but also about the impact this selective memory would have on the society. Majority of us send our children to private schools as we want quality education for our children but we seldom think about the miserable life of the underpaid and ill-treated private school teachers who contribute their best towards the wellbeing of their students in spite of the hardships they face. I sincerely pray that leaders and officers who are in the position of brining changes in the life of people stop the practice of turning blind eye to these helpless private school teachers and exercise their authority to ensure a
decent life to them. The lives of Govt. school teachers are also not free from struggles. Various agitations and demonstrations being held by sections of Govt. school teachers time to time exhibits the state of affairs existing in the Govt. sector. What pride do we have when a section of our teachers are not paid continuously for many months? Analyzing about issues concerned with Centre-State share is not the duty of teachers; all they need is timely release of their salaries so that their family members need not suffer in starvation. Another distressing fact about Govt. school teachers is subjecting them to mental torture by depriving them of their genuine service benefits. Every Govt. servant is entitled to certain service benefits and forcing them to land at the corridors of Courts for getting justice is not expected to happen in the education department which is supposed to serve as a model department to others. Now, let me come to the other side of the coin. When we happily accept the pride of being called as the builders of nation, we must also accept responsibility for the anarchies prevailing in our society. Incidents of persons having authority behaving in arrogant manner could be witnessed in many offices in our country. Majority of Govt. employees develops a feeling that they are the masters of public and never realize that they are appointed to serve the public. Where from these people acquired this mindset? I would say that we inherit these characteristics from our parents and teachers from childhood onwards. Many teachers instill fear psychosis in the minds of children and never allow freedom of expression in class rooms. Students are forced to write only the answers given by the teachers, creative ideas and answers are mostly discouraged, Questioning is never encouraged and even those raising questions are branded as rebels. All these acts gradually inculcate the characteristics of authoritarian approach in us and we exhibit them when power comes to our hands. Every one of us talks about having a corruption free society and many organizations have been sphere
heading towards achieving this. In my opinion such sanitization processes should begin from the schools. A school is a miniature society and most of the characteristics and habits in a person’s life are formed during the school days. Are we in a position to say honestly that we as teachers exhibit a model life to them? What habits will children learn from teachers who keep proxies and indulge in practices of absenteeism? What characteristics will they learn from the functioning of Govt. schools whose average daily working hours and average yearly working days are far less than those of private schools? Teachers are expected to treat their students the same way they treat their own children. But the reality we witness seems to be different. A recent study conducted in a south Indian State reveals that at the Primary & Middle School level 73 % children of Govt. School teachers study at private schools and that at High & Higher Secondary level is 87%. This clearly shows that we want our own children get quality education from the private schools as we do not have trust in the quality of education being provided in the Govt. schools. I am sure that not even 1% of children of bureaucrats and higher officials will be studying in Govt. schools in any of the States. The world now passes through a very difficult phase and the responsibility of teachers thus has increased many folds. Children are exposed to too much of electronic media and the expansion of knowledge goes at very high rate. The dangers of misusing technology also increase with these developments. Teachers have equal responsibility as that of parents in protecting children from the evil clutches of antisocial elements. Teachers thus should keep themselves updated with the latest developments and should lead their students towards growth. On this auspicious day I earnestly request all the teachers to teach their students with love and dedication and at the same time request my beloved students to learn with love and regards for your teachers. decade ago when I read an article that quoted “Teaching is one profession that creates all other professions”, I experienced a wonderful feeling that there is something very special about teaching that makes the profession distinctly different from the rest. We all know the background of Teacher’s Day that commemorates the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great Philosopher, teacher, scholar, humanist and the country’s President between 1962 and 1967. He believed that “teachers should be the best minds in the country”. The fifth of September is all about celebrating the life of a Teacher. To mark the day as a memorable event for the teaching fraternity, our main concern should be Teachercentred and not necessarily dwell on the decade old fashion of observing this auspicious day. I have personally witnessed Teacher’s Day speeches of our honourable leaders in the past. A big time political masala and cocktail stuff overshadowing the celebration mood is a total put off. The auspicious occasion would have no aroma should the significance of the day be pushed far from the truth. Many politicians are the reason for the shortages of Teachers in the rural schools (random transfer of Maths & Science teachers). Also, some of them are the reason why the department couldn’t carry out the Teachers re-deployment exercise earlier (rationalization of over staffing pattern in urban and shortage in rural area) as they have absolutely no academic concern due to their main interest being the vote bank. Therefore, no matter how melodious one sings in golden voice, I’m sorry to state the fact that people’s attention can’t be drawn if one doesn’t have command over quality control. We definitely have state VIPs with oratory skill but they are given enough public platforms throughout the year. Therefore, Teacher’s Day may be best celebrated with educationists, bureaucrats, scholars etc. as Special Guest altering Chief Guest culture at least on Teacher’s Day. We shouldn’t forget retired officers of education department either. May not be all but some of them were truly the heart and brain of the department during their tenure. We could still invite them on Teacher’s Day as Special Guest. They were Teachers first so it is always better to learn practical truth from educators than to hear readymade speeches read out to us. Theoretical words of wisdom is not Teacher-centred anymore hence, it benefits none. How about honoring Teachers on Teacher’s Day? If teaching is considered a noble profession and Teachers are the pillars of society, shouldn’t Teacher’s award go to the deserving Teachers? To those people responsible in decision making, you decide who gets an award but remember those thousand of eyes in the congregation. You are not the lone judge, this is a small world where the potential of an individual Teacher is visible to others and reflected in the society. To those Teachers who were busy inquiring about the award format, please take note that genuine award is never routed through an awardee well
In fond remembrance of my teachers
A
little over a couple of decades ago, i stood at the doorstep of an unknown world with a blank canvas in my hand. My young mind filled with uncertainty and ignorance ventured out to paint my canvas with colours of knowledge and wisdom. I sure was terrified! I pleaded to be left in my cocoon but was instead persuaded to step inside the door of opportunities. Then somebody came along, took my hand gently in hers and taught me to hold a pencil, another showed me how to draw my favorite fruits, still another taught me to read strange letters and spell funny words. They nurtured my young mind, answered my eager questions and aroused in me a curiosity to explore beyond my horizon. Thus began my journey as a learner. They were my super heroes, my mentors and my role models. They were my teachers. This teacher’s day, i fondly remember all the teachers who helped me paint my canvas with colours of knowledge, wisdom and understanding. Here I’d specifically like to thank and mention some few who left an eternal impression in my life. Sir Rob (Bloomfield Academy, Wokha), my first favorite teacher. Sir K K Raut (JNV, Wokha), the maths wizard and a very kind person. Sir Rajesh Thakur (JNV Wokha), best Hindi teacher who knows all the tricks to make learning interesting. Today i can proudly read, write and converse in Hindi and it’s because of your dedication. Thank you Sir. Miss Memory Devi (Librarian,JNV Wokha), my first love for reading began in that small dusty library which you turned into a bustling room. I have been in love since. Sir S Das (JNV Wokha), great artist, great mathematician particularly trigonom-
etry and income tax. Sir Xavier(Immanuel college, Dimapur), an enthusiast lecturer. Sir Mhomo (Immanuel College, Dimapur), whose proficient explanation kindled an interest for the subject in me. Ma’am Moakala ( Immanuel college, Dimapur), very diligent lecturer and a beautiful woman. Sir Abul ( Immanuel college, Dimapur), whose efforts made chemistry understandable and practicals safe yet fun. Sir Mishra (Immanuel college, Dimapur), who helped make sense some utterly confusing physics. Mukibur Sir(Pragjyotish college, Guwahati), a very kind person and a great teacher. Seema ma’am (Pragjyotish college, Guwahati), great lecturer and a beautiful woman. Jayanta Sir (Pragjyotish college, Guwahati), best genetics lecturer. Prof Bendang Ao (NU, Lumami), very enthusiastic lecturer and a great human being. Prof P Lal (NU, Lumami), a dynamic personality whose knowledge is transcendent. Prof John Sema (NU, Lumami), another dynamic personality who maintains a strict discipline. Dear teachers, as you continue moulding yet many lives through your noble profession may your deeds be rewarded by almighty God. You are to your students an inspiration and a blessing. Thank you for your gift of knowledge and wisdom.God bless all the teachers. “HAPPY TEACHERS’ DAY” A grateful student, Jennifer, Dimapur
ahead of time. I had included some practical points on the selection/nomination of Teacher’s Day Award in my earlier article captioned “Reflections on Government schools’ HSLC result” published by esteemed local dailies on May 28, 2017. God knows how far justice was delivered to Teachers in the 11 districts and State level award all these years. Sadly, many deserving Teachers have retired empty handed because no one ever nominated them. The fact of the matter is, nomination of awardees shouldn’t be done by the department officials alone but committee should include EBRC personnel as members. Again I say it would be a big lie of all time should anyone claim to know Teacher’s performance better than the Trainers of Teachers. No man has become great without one’s Teacher. The President of America may be the most respected man in the world, but even the most powerful man on earth is not above his Teacher who nurtured him. Aristotle said “those who educate children are more to be honored than they who produced them: for these only have gave them life those the art of living well”. Sorry proxy Teachers, this is not your day. Dr Abdul Kalam once said “teaching is a noble profession that shapes the character, calibre and future of an individual. If people remember me as a good Teacher, that will be the biggest honour for me”. How many Teachers walk the talk? I am sure we still have inspiring Teachers in our midst no matter what. They are a gem and truly an apple of the department’s eye. The most critical role in the society is human development. No one was born great but our destiny was shaped by Teachers. Alexander the great once said “I’m indebted to my father for living but to my Teacher for living well”. Teacher’s award is no exception. We do witness awards in various disciplines during Republic Day, Independence Day, Election duty awards, other national awards etc. Not that we judge but sometimes we observe that some upright and dedicated Government officers are being left out. Here I mean the choice of good ones over best ones. Generally speaking, present day awards are no more an exciting news to the citizens like those days when published by media houses. Now that we have been celebrating Teacher’s Day for the last six decades, celebrating for the sake of celebration holds no worth. As responsible citizens of the 21st century, Teacher’s Day of our time should make a difference with a purpose. There is no greater joy than when you are acknowledged in recognition of your hard work and dedication. Congratulations to all the Teacher awardees of 2017. On this auspicious ocassion, let us remind ourselves of a quote that says “Give your Teachers respect they deserve because they are the reason you can read this” A big salute to all our Teachers of yesterday and today. Happy Teacher’s Day Vikali Shikhu, Unity Village, Dimapur
Reader’s Post Sir,
Teachers: social engineers and builders of whole universe
On the eve of Teachers Day, I acknowledge the teachers’ contribution and say to them wishful thanks for their selfless service of teachings all through the life as well as shaping the life of various students. Guru is given the status of GOD as God is the builder of whole universe however teachers are considered to be the builder of a good nation. They are especially sent by the God to lead people on right path in the life as well as make them able to take right decisions in bad situations. They are the precious gift from God to us. Our life is not complete without teachers. It is the guru who knows well how to nurture the students. When we take deeper look we all will agree that Teachers affect the eternity, no one can ever tell where their influence stops. Teachers are great sources of knowledge, prosperity, and enlightenment to which anyone can be benefited for whole life. They serve as the real light in everyone’s life as they help students to make their ways in the life. Really, they are builders of the dazzling future of our nation through education. Their committed work cannot be compared to anything. Regarded as social engineers, teachers possess immense knowledge on various issues that affect our daily lives as a community of human beings. Teachers play important role in our life to become successful in career and business. They have the key to provide a good environment for the students. They take very important responsibility of shaping up the lives of young ones and impressionable children. They train the students in a proper manner so that they can gain greater confidence for facing different critical challenges in life. They are an extremely important facet of any society for a number of reasons. The educational world of today’s society demands accountability from its teachers, because teachers have possibly the greatest opportunity to shape a student’s life, not just in terms of knowledge but how they view themselves and interact with the society around them. Advocate Rishikesh Kumar, appearing for Kejriwal, urged the court to condone the delay on the ground that the written statement could not be filed due to certain technical objections raised on two occasions by the High Court Registry. Taking note of this submission, the Registrar condoned the delay on behalf of the Chief Minister and said the same is “subject to deposit of `5,000 costs.” The court has now fixed the matter for October 12.

Patna, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday said that the issue of his party JD(U) joining the Union government was a “media speculation”. “We neither considered the issue nor we had any desire or expectation (about joining the Union government). The issue was speculated in the media. It was baseless and unfounded,” the JD (U) president told reporters here. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Sunday carried out a reshuffle of his Council of Ministers. He had inducted nine BJP leaders into the government. Speculation was rife that two MPs of the JD (U), which recently joined the NDA after severing ties with the RJD and the Congress in Bihar, might be given ministerial berths at the Centre. “Your (media) speculation has been proved wrong and you should close the chapter,” Kumar said.. He said he works in a transparent manner and the media can straightaway ask him about the party’s affairs as he is ready to answer such questions.

India, said, “This is the year of ‘Audi Reloaded’ for us. ‘Audi Reloaded’ just doesn’t mean new products or new touch points but it signifies a nimbleness to tweak the strategy as per the market demand. We have taken a strategic decision to increase our petrol mix and started off the process with the launch of the Audi Q3 1.4 TFSI in March this year. We do have some other surprises planned for this year.” The car is already available in India with a 3.0 TDI engine which is no different from the new petrol version in the terms of design and functionality. The car continues to feature adaptive suspension along with the electromechanical power steering and shift paddles. Key highlights of the Q7 include a high-end infotainment system, fourzone automatic climate control, cruise control, auto park assist and eight airbags among the other features.

MUMBAI, SEP 4 (Agencies): Audi on Monday announced the launch of the petrol powered Q7 40 TFSI quattro in India, starting at Rs 67.76 lakh (ex-showroom). Propelling the car is the 2.0-litre TFSI engine that powers multiple models from the fleet of the German carmaker - including the TT Coupe. The inline-four motor churns out 252PS and 370Nm of torque, said to accelerate the car from standstill to 100kmph in 6.9 seconds. Audi also claims a lightning-fast power redistribution through quattro permanent all-wheel drive, and a top speed of 233kmph. The declared fuel efficiency of the Q7 petrol is 11.68kmpl which is approved by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). The SUV also gets segment first Audi Virtual Cockpit and a smart Audi Smartphone Interface. Addressing the launch, Rahil Ansari, Head, Audi

Daily revision allows any fall in international oil rates to be passed on to consumers immediately rather than having to wait for 15 days as in the old system, he added. “Should prices be hiked by Rs 2.50 or Rs 3 per litre in one go or they should be spaced out in small doses,” he asked.

Since daily revision was implemented, petrol prices have increased by Rs 6.60 to reach Rs 69.66 a litre in Delhi, while that of diesel have risen by Rs 4.02 to Rs 57.38. Petroleum products do not come under GST and prices vary at locations according to state taxes. In the first two weeks of dynamic pricing, petrol prices fell by over Rs 2 a litre and of diesel by more than Re 1. Earlier, the state-run oil marketing companies used to review and revise retail fuel prices every fortnight on the basis of global crude oil prices, while the revision took effect from midnight. Prices of petrol and diesel are now revised at 6 a.m. every day. Dynamic fuel pricing is followed in many developed countries and India opted for it as a response to the recent volatility in global crude oil prices.

New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS): Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday said the dynamic pricing regime, whereby prices of transport fuels are revised daily, would continue despite petrol prices going up by over Rs 6 per litre since the scheme was introduced pan-India from mid-June. Speaking to reporters here after taking over additional charge of the Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry following his elevation to cabinet rank on Sunday, Pradhan said dynamic pricing ensures that the benefit of even the smallest change in international oil prices can be passed down the line to the dealers and the end-users. “Daily revision in prices is good. When we started daily revisions on June 16, rates dropped in the first fortnight. Thereafter, it has increased mainly because of rise in global oil prices,”

President Donald Trump has asked Congress for an initial $7.85 billion for recovery efforts, a fraction of what will eventually be needed. Even that amount could be delayed unless Congress quickly increases the government’s debt ceiling, Mnuchin said, as the United States is on track to hit its mandated borrowing limit by the end of the month unless Congress increases it. “Without raising the debt limit, I am not comfortable that we will get money to Texas this month to rebuild,”

Mnuchin told Fox News. Republican lawmakers, who control both houses of Congress, have traditionally resisted raising the debt ceiling, but linking the issue to Harvey aid could force their hand with people suffering and large areas of the fourthlargest US city under water. Beyond the immediate funding, any massive aid package faces budget pressures at a time when Trump is advocating for tax reform or tax cuts, leading some on Capitol Hill to suggest aid may be released in a series of appropriations.

However, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the council Tuesday that “addressing the issues plaguing the (Korean) Peninsula through sanction pressure alone is impossible” because “that path does not propose any options for engaging (North Korea) in constructive negotiations.” Russia and China have both proposed a twopronged approach: North Korea would suspend its nuclear and missile development, and the US and South Korea would suspend their joint military exercises, which they say are defensive but Pyongyang views as a rehearsal for invasion. The North recently requested a Security Council meeting about the war games. Washington says there is no comparison between its openly conducted, internationally monitored military drills and North Korea’s weapons programs, which the international community has banned. Neither North Korea nor South Korea is a Security Council member.

And in order to do that, we need North Korea to feel the pressure, but if they go down this road there will be consequences.” Japanese Ambassador Koro Bessho told reporters ahead of the council meeting. French Ambassador Francois Delattre said France was calling for the adoption of new UN sanctions, swift implementation of existing ones and new separate sanctions by the European Union. The council aimed to take a big bite out of the North Korean economy earlier this month by banning the North from exporting coal, iron, lead and seafood products. Together those are worth about a third of the country’s USD 3 billion in exports last year. The council could look to sanction other profitable North Korean exports, such as textiles. Another possibility could be tighter limits on North Korean laborers abroad; the recent sanctions barred giving any new permits for such workers. The US also suggested some other ideas earlier this summer, including air and maritime restrictions and

Suu Kyi, a former political prisoner of Myanmar’s junta and Nobel peace laureate, has made no public comment since the latest fighting broke out in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state. This prompted criticism on Monday from fellow Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai and Muslim countries in Asia targeting Suu Kyi. “Every time I see the news, my heart breaks at the suffering of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar,” Pakistani activist Yousafzai, who famously survived being shot in the head by the Taliban, said in a statement on Twitter. “Over the last several years I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment. Priyanka lauds UNICEF for a game to help adolescents
A
ctress Priyanka Chopra has lauded UNICEF India for making a stress-free mobile game to help adolescents to beat “stressors” in life. Priyanka, who is the UNICEF Global Goodwill Ambassador, on Sunday took to Twitter, where she shared a minutelong video. In the video, Priyanka said: “Shall I give you a breaking n ew s.
There is someone in my life... Someone very special. Wherever I go, be it America, India or home, he is present with me everywhere, day and night. What are you thinking? Shall I tell you who is it? Nugget... want to meet?” “This is Nugget my favourite mobile game.... The teenager who doesn’t have this game in their mobile, then that mobile shouldn’t be called a mobile at all.” The “Mary Kom” star captioned the video: “Sometimes the pressures of life get to you, and you wish you had a way of venting out. Well, Nugget can help!” The game from UNICEF India has been launched after several cases of suicides by teenagers have been reported as they fell to Blue Whale Challenge. The Blue Whale Challenge game is targeted at teenagers and forces them to perform several dangerous activities, finally leading them to commit suicide. The game has claimed many lives in India and across the world. Priyanka, 35, then thanked everyone for the postive response shown to the Nugget mobile game and lauded the UNICEF for it. “Thanks for the positive response... Full credit goes to Unicef India for developing this game to help adolescents beat the stressors of life!” she wrote. On the acting front, Priyanka now has in her kitty big projects like “Isnt It Romantic?” with Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Adam Devine, and “A Kid Like Jake” starring Jim Parsons, Claire Danes, Octavia Spencer, Ann Dowd and Michaela Watkins.
BASN informed that district reigning queens would have a direct entry into the beauty pageant, and the runners up will have to undergo the open auditions.

She never behaved like a star and she has done remarkable work in ‘Haseena Parkar,” Rajesh said in a statement. “Haseena Parkar” is based on underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena, played by Shraddha. Talking about his role, he said: “I am playing Shyam Keswani. He is a high profile lawyer in Mumbai. The difficult thing for me was to look like him. I have worked on my look. “While shooting, I had to wear a wig and do all the make-up to match him. It took two hours everyday. After shoot, it again took two hours to remove it. So that was the physical part of the challenge. It was a very exciting role as most of the scenes were happening in a court,” he added.
The selected contestants will be given intensive training to enhance their personality, diction, etiquettes, public speaking, ramp walk etc. (Correspondent)

The singer is said to be in talks with West End impresario Sir Cameron Mackintosh about the prospect of playing Nancy, the girlfriend of nefarious villain Bill Sykes in the musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic novel. According to The Sun, the singer sees the role as a “new challenge” and a role that could be enjoyed by her four-year-old son, Angelo. “It would be a major part for her and she’s seriously considering it”, a source told the newspaper. “She’s talked about Angelo being her number one priority and she sees this as a role that he could appreciate too. It would be a new challenge for her but one that she would definitely be up for.”

Man City investigation
Madrid, Sep 4 (Agencies): La Liga has asked UEFA to investigate Manchester City’s spending, claiming their financial power “distorts European competitions” and “is irreparably harming the football industry”. La Liga is not only asking for a probe into City’s spending, it also wants UEFA to expand its newlylaunched investigation into whether Paris Saint-Germain have breached Financial Fair Play rules. The Spanish league president Javier Tebas said that Abu Dhabi-funded City and Qatari-owned PSG are benefitting from state aid which he says “distorts European competitions” and “is irreparably harming the football industry”. Tebas wrote to UEFA last month requesting investigations into both clubs and he wants European football’s governing body to look into PSG’s “history of noncompliance”. Both City and PSG spent millions of pounds in the summer transfer window. City spent £50m on Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker and £42.9m on leftback Benjamin Mendy from Monaco.

Star India pays Rs 16,347 cr for IPL media rights Mumbai, Sep 4 (PTI): Star India today completed its virtual monopoly of cricket broadcast by winning the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) media rights for a whopping 16,347.50 crore (USD 2.55 billion) for the next five years. The staggering deal, which will run from 2018 to 2022, has turned out to be a financial windfall for the BCCI despite the administrative crisis it is facing at the moment. The testimony to IPL’s growth as the pre-
mier sporting property of the country is reflected by the fact that the previous 10-year bid for TV rights only was bought by Sony at Rs 8200 crore in 2008. Now, the BCCI stands to earn nearly double that amount in half the duration (five years) with earnings of Rs 3270 crore from IPL media rights per year. The BCCI will now earn Rs 55 crore approximately from an IPL match compared to Rs 43 crore, ironically, for each international match that India play.
The media rights include broadcast (TV) and digital (mobile and internet) for various segments namely India, Middle East, Africa, Europe and America. Interestingly, rival Sony’s individual bid for broadcast (TV rights) this time was Rs 11,050 crore compared to Star’s Rs 6,196 crore. However, as per rule, the companies could form a consortium and if its consolidated global bid happened to be greater than the sum total parts of

Accordingly, the sum total of other bids, excluding Star consortium, was Rs 15,819.51 crore which is at least Rs 500 crore less than Star India’s consolidated bid. Sharapova knocked out of US Open Kvitova to face Venus in quarters
Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia (right) shakes hands with Maria Sharapova of Russia after defeating her in their women’s singles fourth round match.
N E W YO R K , S e p 4 ( Ag en c i es ) : M a r i a Sharapova’s contentious and captivating US Open run came to an end when Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova beat her 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 to reach the Flushing Meadows quarter-finals. Playing her first Grand Slam since returning from a 15-month doping ban, Sharapova grabbed the spotlight with an opening-round upset of second seed Simona Halep and commanded centre stage right until the end, walking off Arthur Ashe Stadium court with a demure wave to the capacity crowd. After being denied direct entry into the French Open and then forced to pull out of Wimbledon qualifying due to injury, Sharapova was granted a wildcard for the US Open, adding fuel to
the debate about rewarding players returning from doping bans. The debate escalated when all the Russian’s matches were scheduled on Arthur Ashe Stadium’s centre court. The former world number one, however, refused to be distracted from focusing on the job at hand but could not find a route past the 16th-seeded Sevastova. The match offered up an intriguing contrast of styles, the crafty Latvian against Sharapova’s brute power and attacking instincts. Sharapova had not produced extended stretches of brilliant tennis but her reputation as one of tennis’s great battlers remained a constant. There were few break chances in the opening set but Sharapova was able to
convert the two presented to her to take a one-set lead, clinching it with a thundering ace that a flat-footed Sevastova could only watch. It was the first set surrendered by Sevastova but the feisty 27-year-old was unfazed, hitting back with an early break in the second and fighting off three break chances from Sharapova to level the contest. Sevastova was gifted a break to open the third when Sharapova double-faulted and the rattled Russian was broken again as the Latvian charged to 3-0 lead. Sharapova, ever the fighter, broke back and held to cut the deficit to 3-2, putting the pressure back on her opponent. Sevastova blunted the Russian’s fightback with a hold for 4-2 followed by another big break and then served out the contest.

Kohima, Sep 4 (NPN): Khriekesa FC defeated Kohima Football League Champions Ziekezou SC 2-0 in the 3rd quarterfinal match of the ongoing KTC Cup 2017 at Kohima local ground on Monday.
Khriekesa FC will now face Addax FC in the first semi-finals round of the KTC Cup 2017 on Wednesday. Khriekesa FC started the match brightly but the soggy ground condition prevented them from scoring any goal as Ziekezou
SC managed to hold on for a draw till the first half. Ziekezou defence looked shaky throughout the match. Khriekesa FC finally broke the deadlock when substitute Kekhriese Ciesotsu fired the ball into the net with just 13 minutes remaining. Nyithong Magh, the match hero, who kept the defender struggling with his pace also scored in the last minute to finish the game for Khriekesa FC. Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova eliminated No. 3 seed Garbine Muguruza 7-6 (3), 6-3 to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals for only the second time in 10 tournament appearances. Muguruza, the reigning Wimbledon champion, jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set and earned three break points for a chance to go up 5-1. But the 13th-seeded Kvitova managed to hold there, starting a run in which she grabbed five of six games on the way to the tiebreaker in a terrific set filled with big hitting from both women. Muguruza broke to begin the second set, but Kvitova again turned things around quickly and advanced to a matchup against Venus Williams. Kvitova’s only other trip to the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows came in 2015, when she lost at that stage to eventual champion Flavia Pennetta. Ve n u s W i l l i a m s reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals for the second time in three years with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. The 37-year-old American is the oldest woman in the bracket. She owns seven Grand Slam titles, including two in New York in 2000 and 2001. The No. 9-seeded Williams is trying to get to her third Grand Slam final of the season.

Sportspersons the only VIPs, says new Sports Minister
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore before taking charge as Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent Charge) at his office in New Delhi on Monday. (PTI)
N ew D e l h i , S e p 4 (IANS): Newly appointed Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Monday emphasised that the environment of his ministry has to change, saying the sportspersons should be treated as the only VIPs in the country. “There is only one VIP and that is the sportsperson and nobody else. There is a requirement of shift in attitude,” Rathore told reporters after taking charge as Minister of State (independent charge) of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. “The environment in the ministry is required to be changed. The attitude should change towards sports and we all are included in it, when we see a player, how we see them, whether he is doing well in
games or any other field,” the 2004 Athens Olympic silver medal-winning shotgun shooter added. The 47-year-old emphasised on honour and facilities for all the sports personalities representing India. “Honour and facilities for the players representing the country (will be on our agenda). Education is not only limited to the school and colleges. Sports in not just for entertainment -- the kind of lessons that sports teaches helps one in learning how to spend their life and that will be our aim to find way for providing youngsters with a platform,” the three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist said. “We want sports to develop, sports personalities at grassroots level to develop. Every state should send
their players, and the sports ministry will look after their facilities,” he added. The Sports Minister said being a former sportsman himself gives him a better understanding of the problems the athletes have to face and he will work accordingly to eradicate them. “My jour ney as a Sports Minister started right from the reception of the office. I remember how we need to take permission and papers from there to enter the office. “I know as a player what problems one has to face. I believe the ministry has many good officers who have provided help not only to me but also many other athletes. (Now) The aim is to increase such players, the first citizen of the country is the sportsperson,” Rathore explained.
Virat Kohli equals Sachin Tendulkar’s feat DUBAI, Sep 4 (PTI): Virat Kohli has kept his stranglehold on the top spot in the ICC ODI batsman rankings and has also equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of highest rating points pocketed by an Indian. India pacer Jasprit Bumrah has made handsome gains in the bowlers’ rankings, jumping as many as 27 places to be fourth behind Mitchell Starc, Imran Tahir and leader Josh Hazlewood. The latest rankings were released on Monday, a day after India completed a 5-0 whitewash of hosts Sri Lanka in the ODI series. Kohli was in sublime touch in the series, scoring two hundreds to complete 30 ODI centuries. Kohli, who is also top-ranked in T20Is, has increased his lead over Australia’s David Warner from 12 to 26 points and is now on 887 points, equalling the highest ODI rating points by an India batsman, recorded

by Tendulkar in 1998. Rohit Sharma, the second highest run-maker in the series with 302 runs, and former captain Mahendra
Singh Dhoni are both back in the top 10. Sharma, who struck two centuries in Sri Lanka, has gained five slots to reach ninth place while
Dhoni’s 162 runs have lifted him two places to 10th position. Meanwhile, Bumrah has moved to a career-best fourth position in the bowlers’ rankings. The 23-year-old, whose previous best was 24th position in June this year, has moved up the table with his player of the series effort of 15 wickets, the best by any bowler in a bilateral ODI series in Sri Lanka. His performances included a career-best five for 27 in the third ODI at Palekelle. Also gaining in the rankings is India’s left-arm spinner Akshar Patel, who has moved up from 20th to 10th position after finishing with six wickets in four matches. Patel has thus closed in on his career-high rank of ninth in October last year. Hardik Pandya (up two places to 61st), Kuldeep Yadav (up 21 places to 89th) and Yuzvendra Chahal (up 55 places to 99th) are other India bowlers to gain in the rankings.
Belgium beat Greece to book 2018 World Cup spot No reason to give up captaincy: Tharanga ATHENS, Sep 4 (Agencies): Belgium became the first European team to qualify for next year’s World Cup when a Romelu Lukaku header gave them a 2-1 win away to Greece on Sunday with the goals coming in a five-minute second-half spell. Belgium became the sixth team to make sure of their place at the 2018 tournament alongside Brazil, Japan, Iran and Mexico, plus Russia who qualified automatically as hosts. The win left Belgium with 22 points from eight games at the top of Group H, eight clear of Bosnia who won 4-0 away to Gibraltar. They each have two games to play. The winners of the nine European groups qualify directly and the best eight runners-up play off for four more places. ard started on the bench. Greece managed to stifle Belgium with a fiveman defence in the first half and twice came close to scoring on the break. Anastasios Donis
surged forward from midfield and tested Thibaut Courtois, then Konstantinos Stafylidis produced a thumping drive which was heading for the top corner until the goalkeeper tipped
it away. Defender Jan Vertonghen gave Belgium the lead in the 70th minute with a left-foot drive into the bottom corner. Belgium’s celebrations
were cut short three minutes later when Greece’s Portugal-born Zeca sidefooted home to equalise after Georgios Tzavelas sent over a pinpoint cross. But one minute after that, Lukaku headed into the far corner after being picked out by Thomas Meunier. Greece dropped to third with 13 points after managing only one point from two home games in the space of four days. Belgium’s neighbours France, however, were unable to seal a home win Luxembourg, despite boasting a star-studded front line led by Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe. Heroic defending from the visitors and poor French finishing meant that Les Bleus slipped to a disappointing stalemate. T h e d r aw m e a n s France lead group A on 17 points, just one point ahead of Sweden, with two games left to play.
COLOMBO, Sep 4 (PTI): Upul Tharanga said that he will not step down from Sri Lanka’s ODI captain’s post despite a 0-5 drubbing at the hands of India in the just-concluded series. “There is no reason to give up captaincy. The next selectors’ committee will decide how we will move forward. We didn’t play well. And in the last two years we have not played well. So, only this set of players can come out of this phase. But we need to plan better and we need to identify what are the areas we can improve on,” he added. “We lacked consistency. We didn’t bat, bowl or field well. We were outplayed in the series. I am disappointed with our batting effort. India were very consistent but we failed to get big scores. The Indian top order was making plenty of runs,” the skipper said. Not posting a single score of above 250 has
Upul Tharanga
been one of the reasons for Sri Lanka’s failure to win a match reckons Tharanga. “We committed too many mistakes. As a batting unit, we failed to post decent totals. Even after five games, we failed to post 250 runs even once. I am feeling very disappointed with that. These batting displays are worrying. We lost some seven wickets for 53 runs. That has been something that is happening frequently now.
We commit too many mistakes and we need to rectify them soon,” a disappointed Tharanga stated. But Tharanga feels that only players themselves can get them out of this rut. “As a player and captain, I feel very bad about it. If you take the last two years, we were not up to the mark. We were not consistent, but only these players can get out of this. It is a good opportunity for us to come out of this.” Tharanga said that Sri Lankan youngsters should learn a thing or two about how Virat Kohli goes about converting starts. “The whole series and prior to that we have spoken about it. Virat is an experienced player. We can learn a lot from him. Kohli’s batting was a good example for us. We talk about these things. We need someone who is set to get a big one. But we failed to achieve that,” concluded Tharanga.
